On the day we launched our redesigned Daily Chronicle, I asked for your opinions.

Thanks to all of you who took the time to offer them, whether it was by phone, email, or by stopping by our office here at 1586 Barber Greene Road in DeKalb to tell us in person.

We listened to what you had to say, and so today we’re making some changes.

Changes to our comics lineup were a major point of contention. So in today’s edition, you will find that we have brought back the strips you told us we never should have dropped in the first place: “Crankshaft,” “For Better or for Worse,” and “Frank and Ernest” will all now appear on our redesigned “Fun & Games” pages.

We’ve also added a new “jumble” word game feature that will appear on those pages as well.

Returning those strips meant that we had to find a new home for the daily bridge column as well as the Celebrity Cypher. You can now find both of those in the Classified pages.

You might also have noticed that in the middle of last week, we increased the size of the type on our weather page – some of you

EDITOR’S NOTE Eric Olson said it was hard to read at the smaller size, and we hope the larger size is more legible.

Also on the weather page, look for the return of the forecast for cities around the country on Tuesday.

As for other comments on the type size, I want to assure everyone that it hasn’t changed. The size of the headline and body type, as well as the fonts, are exactly the same.

In the past week, I’ve personally spoken with a lot of you. Whether you love the new look or it’s got to grow on you, I hope you’ll stick with us as this latest version of the newspaper continues to evolve.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Peyton Manning gave himself a chance to have a Super ending to his career. Von Miller and the Denver defense made the plays to secure the title for the Broncos. Manning and Panthers quarterback Cam Newton were harassed all game Sunday, and the Broncos made enough big plays for the 24-10 victory.

It was Manning’s 200th win and perhaps his last before retirement.

DeKALB – City Council members today will hear Shodeen’s development proposal for property along Lincoln Highway west of downtown DeKalb.

Geneva-based Shodeen wants to build a 128-room, four-story Marriott brand hotel along with a 187-unit, five-story apartment complex on the property, which is in the city’s central area tax increment financing district.

Shodeen proposes 464 parking spaces for the development.

The DeKalb City Council Committee of the Whole meeting will be at 5 p.m. today at the DeKalb Municipal building, 200 S. Fourth St.

STEM Divas introduce girls to 3-D printing

Participants learn about fields of science, technology, engineering, math

Garron, 8, has never missed a STEM Divas class, an initiative to get young girls excited about science, technology, engineering and math fields, and she doesn’t plan to miss any in the future.

“I just really like science,” Nelson said. “I think [my favorite] was when we made jewelry boxes.”

STEM Divas met Saturday to teach middle school-aged girls about 3-D printing and the computer software used to design the finished products. Protected by pink safety goggles, the girls worked away with a 3-D printing pen – 3doodler – constructing shapes and jewelry to

take home and show off later.

“The whole idea is to introduce them to science in a way that relates to them,” Pettee Guerrero, STEM Outreach associate and founder of STEM Divas, said. “A lot of girls want to be nurses and teachers, and it’s because they like to help people. We show them with the things we do, that scientists and engineers help people as well, just in a different way.”

The class started the four-hour session by learning to use Autodesk Fusion, a free computer-aided design software program used to work up blueprints for engineering projects. 3-D printing is time-consuming, however, and since the group only had two printers to work with, each girl was provided a 3doodler to draw 3-D shapes directly

from pen to paper.

“We showed them our 3-D printers, how they work and what the process is,” STEM Outreach student worker and sophomore Northern Illinois University mechanical engineering major Mackenzie Thompson said. “These pens are basically 3-D printers, but instead of using a computer, they’re using their brain.”

Afterward, the class was asked to design their own jewelry using pre-printed shapes and figures. Seven-year-old Kate Viall wanted to share some of her new found skills with her younger sister.

“I’m going to make a necklace and then I’m going to go back and make one with a lot of elephants on it for [my sister],” she said.

Kate wants to be a pediatrician when she grows up, and although she wouldn’t have been intimidated by a few boys in the class, she was glad to be surrounded by only girls, she said.

For some of STEM Diva’s frequent fliers, the classes are better than school, and offer a unique experience specifically tailored to them, Thompson said.

“Our whole STEM Divas series, it’s just about getting girls interested in STEM and it’s about getting them more comfortable with it,” she said. “A lot of studies have shown that one of the reasons girls don’t go into STEM is because it’s more focused toward boys, and so by having this class it’s kind of showing them that girls can do it and there’s a way to apply it in ways they’re interested in.”

DeKALB – Most kids in DeKalb know “Big John”, the city’s aerial ladder truck, but they’ll have to say goodbye soon, Fire Chief Eric Hicks said.

The DeKalb Fire Department has a new ladder truck, and fire officials plan to retire Big John within the next few months. Department officials have been busy detailing and training on the new vehicle, which recently arrived in DeKalb from Weston, Florida.

Aerial ladder trucks can cost a little more than $1 million, so the department bought one used for $420,000.

Northern Illinois University contributed $275,000 toward the purchase, as

part of a fire protection and ambulance service agreement, Hicks said.

“We spent about a year looking for it,” he said. “We wanted something nice, but they can be costly. … We’ll get about 15 years out of it.”

Driving the high-tech, 2008 aerial ladder truck will be a new experience for DeKalb firefighters, because it’s a different make and model than the old one, which the department has been

using for 26 years. The new truck also has all-wheel drive and is extensively equipped with cameras and computers that show things like the angle of the ladder, wheels, and water flow. “it’s like starting new,” Deputy Fire Chief Jeff McMaster said. “It drives different. Thing like the generators, how to put up the ladder and set up safely.

It’s all completely different.”

The truck will be put in service

toward the end of March. Fire department staff will have to go through extensive drivers’ training as well as move all the emergency equipment and hoses over from the old truck. The new truck already is sporting a prominent “Proudly DeKalb” decal as well as decor from Northern Illinois University and the city of DeKalb.

A name hasn’t been chosen for the new vehicle because the department plans to involve the community in the process. Starting March 1, the department will put up some concept ideas on its website and let the public vote on what the new truck should be named.

“It’s in all the parades,” Hicks said.

“It’s in all the PR events. It’s a high-profile vehicle for our city.”

The department hasn’t decided what to do with the old truck yet because its proving difficult to get rid off, Hicks said.

“There’s just not much of a market for it,” he said. “It’s 26 years old with corrosion problems. ... We might keep it for a while as a backup while we work out any bugs in the new one.”

Born: Dec. 20, 1921 Died: Feb. 3, 2016

Frances I. Erickson, 94, of DeKalb, IL died on Wednesday, February 3, 2016, in Oakcrest Retirement Center.

She was born on December 20, 1921, in Miles City, Montana to Charles Arthur and Anna (Peterson) Crowley. Frances married Robert Erickson on March 13, 1945 in Sioux City, IA. Frances was a RN at Sycamore Municipal Hospital. She was also a member of Salem Lutheran Church, loved playing bridge and other card games, sewing, and swimming.

Survivors include her three daughters, Nancy (Jim) West of Sycamore, IL, Cathy (Richard) Joyce of Coal City, IL, and Sandra Erickson of Sycamore, IL; three grandchildren, Erick (Angela) West, Abby West, and Kelsy (Kyle) Hart; seven great-grandchildren, Ian, Ellianon, Annalise, Lexi, Kaleb, Damion, and Brody; sister, Phyllis (O.R. “Bud”) Sheldahl of Redlands, CA. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, and her infant son, Jack.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 11, 2016, in Salem Lutheran Church, 1145 DeKalb Avenue, Sycamore, IL, with Reverend Robert Hansen officiating. There will be a visitation time from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. prior to the service at church. A memorial fund has been established in her name.

Barbara Ann Markham, 76, of Elgin passed away Saturday afternoon, February 6, 2016, in Woodstock.

She was born April 4, 1939, in Elgin the daughter of Leslie and Helen (Tamms) Gurke. Barbara married Alvin Markham on February 27, 1960, at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Harmony where she was a lifelong member. Many know her as the souvenir booth lady at Sycamore Speedway as she did that for many years while her family raced. She also worked at Osco part time in Elgin where she made many friends there and would do anything for you. She will be missed by many.

Surviving are her husband of almost 56 yrs., Alvin; children, Darwin (Earlita), Beth Cobb, Ralph (Renee), Roger (Samantha); 8 grandkids; 2 great grandkids; brother, David (Darlene) Gurke; and a sister, Dorothy Gurke; she also had

She was preceded in death by her parents, Les and Helen Gurke.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 am Thursday, February 11, at St. John United Church of Christ in Harmony. Burial will be in the Harmony Cemetery. Visitation is Wednesday, February 10, from 3 :00 to 8:00 pm at Fredrick Funeral Home, 284 Park St, Hampshire and continue on Thursday at the church from 10:00 to 11:00 am.

DONALD J. SOAVE Born: April 26, 1931 Died: Feb. 6, 2016

Donald J. Soave, 84, of Sandwich, IL passed away Saturday, February 6, 2016, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born April 26, 1931, in Joliet, IL the son of Amel and Josephine (Baiardo) Soave. He married Mary Jo Prince on January 15, 1955, in Rockdale, IL. He was a member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Sandwich, and Yorkville American Legion Post #489 He was a US Army Veteran serving during the Korean War, with the Army Corp Operator Engineers. Donald was employed at Caterpillar retiring in 1984.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; two daughters, Linda (Mike) Dickerson of Sycamore, IL and Beckey Soave of Knoxville, TN; three sons, Mark Soave of Plainfield, IL, Eric Soave of Sandwich, IL and Rico (Diane Carlson) Soave of Minooka, IL; eight grandchildren, Anthony, Aleesa, Sarah, Andrew, Shannon, Nick, Nico and Angelo; two brothers, Richard Soave of Florida and Raymond Soave of Joliet, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Lisa Ann Soave; one infant son and one infant sister.

Per Donald’s wishes there will be no visitation. Memorial Mass will be held 10:00 a.m., Thursday, February 11, 2016, at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church 340 W. Arnold Rd. Sandwich, IL with Rev. Kevin Butler officiating. Private burial will be in St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Cemetery rural Sandwich.

SOMONAUK – An 18-year-old Somonauk man was jailed Friday on charges of criminal sexual assault of a child and aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

Austin W. Burnett, of the 300 block of South East Street, Somonauk, was arrested Friday after an investigation by the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Austin W. Burnett Office and Somonauk police.

If convicted of the most serious charge, criminal sexual assault of a child, Burnett could face six to 30 years in prison.

Police received a report that Burnett had sexual contact with a person younger than age 13, according to a sheriff’s news release. The incident occurred Feb. 1, police said.

County program seeking information about burglary

HINCKLEY – DeKalb County Crime Stoppers is seeking information about a burglary to a Hinckley home, where police said cash and collectible coins were stolen.

Police believe someone entered a home in the 1200 block of Lee Road, Hinckley on Jan. 22, through a first-story window, and made off with cash, gift cards and collectible coins, according to a news release.

The homeowner was out of town at the time.

Hinckley police were not immediately available for comment.

SYCAMORE – Reilly Mize, 10, learned a lot about nature and how to survive “in the wild” as a participant in Saturday’s Klondike Derby, an allday outdoor event for Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts in DeKalb County.

“We learned about animal tracks and first aid,” said Reilly, a fourth-grader at North Grove Elementary in Sycamore and a member of Webelos Den 1 in Sycamore. “We pretended one of our friends fell in a lake and was a victim. We had to make a stretcher and put our coats on him to keep him warm.”

Reilly was one of about 180 boys who spent the sunny Saturday at the Sycamore Sportsmen’s Club competing in events like fire building, log cutting, rifle shooting and orienteering. This is DeKalb County’s 56th annual Klondike Derby, where Cub Scout dens compete against each other, while Boy Scout troops compete against each other. The groups rotate among 11 stations throughout the day and are ranked on each task.

said the boys not only learn valuable skills, but also the importance of teamwork.

SYCAMORE – Ellen Rogers has been named executive director of the Voluntary Action Center, a role she served in as interim after the untimely death of Tom Zucker.

Rogers has been with VAC since 1989 and was the company’s associate director at the time of Zucker’s passing in August. VAC also announced that Paul LaLonde would now be assistant executive director.

“During our transition period after Tom’s unexpected death, Ellen and Paul did outstanding jobs of providing the expertise and stability that VAC needed,” said Linda Wiggins, chairwoman of the VAC board. “They truly stepped up, took on new duties and carried them out in ways that earned the respect of all staff and the VAC board.”

As associate director, Rogers had been responsible for VAC’s nutrition programs, including Meals on Wheels off-site congregate food programs, serving DeKalb and LaSalle counties. Under her leadership, the Meals on Wheels program doubled, and she has secured several grants for VAC programs, according to a written statement VAC issued.

The fifth-grader at North Grove Elementary school in Sycamore said participating in Klondike as a Cub Scout is good preparation for what’s coming next when he becomes a Boy Scout.

“We’re learning team building skills, and I just like being out here doing all this fun stuff,” he said.

Cody Bollech, 15, of Troop 47 in Kingston, said he likes Klondike Derby because his skills are being tested and judged.

“It helps develop skills like cooperation and leadership,” said Bollech, a sophomore at Genoa-Kingston High School. “There’s a lot of teamwork.

We should know all these skills when we get here, and be able to efficiently use those skills as a team.”

For Hugh Bisco, leader for Troop 18 and Webelos Den 1 of Pack 141 in Sycamore, just getting the boys outside and letting them have fun was the best part of the day.

“They’re doing really well and working well together,” Bisco said.

“They learn the basic scout skills like campfire building and map and compass skills.”

Alex Andrews, 12, said his favorite event of the day was rifle shooting.

“It’s just a fun weekend and a good opportunity to learn something,” said Alex, a member of Troop 71 in Genoa.

“I learned about rifle safety and it’s just having fun with my friends.”

They have traveled to Chatham, Taylorville, Decatur and Springfield to perform the monthly shows.

The band was formed in 1976 by Young’s mother, Helen Ervin, for the Bicentennial program at a local school.

The group decided to focus on the community members living in nursing homes.

For 40 years, band members have come and gone. Some play instruments that can be purchased in a music store, but the majority of the pieces are handmade. The band credits Emily Strum as their singer.

“It just brings back memories,” she said. “They just adore them.”

But the show isn’t just for the audience. The band members also have a good time.

“After I go I feel so good,” said Carolyn Keleher. “Those people just really love us.”

The mission of the group is to bring fun to the residents, but to enjoy themselves as well.

“You have to be a quick-change artist,” Hawkins said. “It’s like being in vaudeville.”

The band members find happiness and energy through the reactions of the residents.

“We’ve had people (in the audience) who haven’t spoken, but they will get up and sing,” Young said.

Little practice is needed before the performances. The band relies on the residents to help them with the songs and the skits. And banging on a laundry detergent box just requires rhythm.

“We make so much noise they can’t hear the singing,” Turnbull said.

ILLIOPOLIS – To make music from a teapot can be easy, but to make it a performance takes more talent, or maybe spunk.

The Illiopolis Kitchen Band is a group of retired women who play instruments made up of various household items. “Anything you can find in the kitchen, we play it,” Rita Turnbull said.

The porcelain teapots are a popular instrument among the group. But they have also created music through washboards, laundry detergents boxes, cake racks, coffee cans and even bed pans. The songs they play are just as eclectic, such as “Strolling through the Park” and “Oh Where has My Little Dog Gone.”

The choice of music is selected to entertain Illiopolis residents living in nursing homes and assisted living facilities.

“We try to go where there’s Illiopolis people,” said band member, Rosella

“I also play the measuring cups and spoons,” she said.

The music is only part of the show.

For an hour, the band plays 32 songs mixed with skits, dancing and audience participation. Each band member has their own bag filled with hats, instruments and trinkets.

During the song “Take Me Out to the Ballgame,” the band will throw balls to each other and some of the residents.

Throughout the Easter songs, one of the ladies will jump like a bunny. The group will also dance an Irish jig.

“We try our best,” Turnbull said.

The group is famous for the teapots and their rendition of “I’m a Little Teapot.” They will change the spouts during the songs, except for Frankie Reynolds. When asked by the others why she doesn’t participate, she answers, “Because I’m the sugar bowl.”

The song choices have been selected not for their simplicity, but because of the familiarity by the residents. According to band member Mary Hawkins, the simple songs can be taught to 5-year-olds.

Long odds for school funding reform The ASSOCIATED PRESS

SPRINGFIELD – Lawmakers of all stripes have pledged support in recent weeks for overhauling the state’s outdated school funding formula, a nearly 30-year-old system that nearly everyone agrees penalizes students in poorer districts.

But the issue once again faces long odds in this spring’s legislative session, amid a reluctance to balance the formula by taking away funds from more welloff school districts, especially during an election year. Some lawmakers say the issue can’t be dealt with until more funds are available to distribute.

That likely ties the matter to the eight-month-old budget standoff between Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and Democratic leaders, and perhaps an agreement on restoring the state’s expired income tax hike.

“If you need votes (to approve an overhaul), it’s very difficult when you take away 30 percent of a district’s budget,” said Democratic Rep. Barbara Flynn Currie, a top lieutenant to House Speaker Michael Madigan.

Rauner, who pledged during his State of the State address last month to work with Democrats on improving education, appears to agree. “I won’t allow some school districts to give up money to give to other school districts,” he said last week.

Wheaton College said in a statement on its website Saturday that the college and Dr. Larycia Hawkins “have reached a confidential agreement under which they

will part ways.”

Hawkins, who’s Christian, was placed on leave in December when she posted on Facebook that Christians and Muslims worship the same God. College officials said at the time that her views were inconsistent with their “doctrinal convictions.”

The State Journal-Register reported Memorial Medical Center is owed $46.3 million from the State Employees’ Group Health Insurance Program. The hospital also is owed $10.9 million in Medicaid bills.

Chief Executive Officer Edgar Curtis said the not-for-profit hospital isn’t going to lay off any workers, freeze hiring or downsize any programs that affect patients.

After Rubio stumbles, rivals see opening in N.H.

BEDFORD, N.H. – Marco Rubio’s uneven debate performance just days before Tuesday’s New Hampshire primary has emboldened a trio of governors seeking to stem his rise in the Republican race for president. But if Rubio’s rivals can slow him in New Hampshire, they are likely to leave the GOP with a muddled mix of establishment contenders and no clear favorite to challenge Donald Trump and Ted Cruz.

At the heart of the battle between Rubio and Chris Christie, John Kasich and Jeb Bush is whether the freshman Florida senator has the experience and policy depth to serve as president – or whether he’s simply a well-spoken lightweight.

Christie unleashed withering attacks against Rubio in Saturday’s debate, and the New Jersey governor tripped up Rubio by calling him out in real-time for his reliance on rehearsed talking points.

The morning after, Christie declared the Republican contest a changed race.

“There was a march amongst some in the chattering class to anoint Sen. Rubio,” Christie said on CNN’s State of the Union. “I think after last night, that’s over.”

Christie and his fellow governors need that to be the case, given that they’ve staked their White House hopes on New Hampshire. Without

a strong showing, each will face enormous pressure to drop out from Republican Party leaders eager to rally around a single candidate who can challenge Cruz and Trump, the top-two finishers in the lead-off Iowa caucuses.

Trump has held a commanding lead in New Hampshire preference polls for months. Cruz is in the mix with Rubio and the governors, although his campaign is more focused on the Southern states later in the primary calendar.

The prospect of Trump or Cruz winning the GOP nomination has set many Republican leaders on edge, and that anxiousness is only likely to increase should New Hampshire voters leave Rubio and the governors clustered together in the primary results, failing to anoint one as their preferred challenger to the front-runners.

Rubio emerged from Iowa looking as though he was that candidate, with a third-place finish in Iowa that was stronger than expected. Rival campaigns conceded privately in the days leading up to the debate he was pulling away from the governors. But the Florida senator stumbled in the debate when challenged about his qualifications.

For Barbara O’Brien, an undecided voter who had been considering voting for Rubio, it was enough to convince her he wasn’t the right choice.

“He kept saying the same thing over and over again,” said O’Brien, 67, from Manchester who is one of New Hampshire’s many independents.

Online voting for better elections

Early voting began Thursday in DeKalb County, only there were no ballots cast because there were none available.

The episode, while embarrassing, seems unlikely to disenfranchise people. But it is a good example of why it’s time for elections to begin to migrate online, as so many other important activities already have.

The reason there were no ballots, DeKalb County Clerk and Recorder Doug Johnson said, was that the Illinois State Board of Elections did not certify the ballots until Monday.

That wasn’t enough time for Johnson’s office to have certified, paper ballots printed and ready for Thursday’s early voting start date.

The ballots must be readable by ballot counting machines, so the print job is a bit more complex than the copies of the Daily Chronicle that we print each day for readers, Johnson said. PDFs of the ballots are sent to an outside vendor, which does the work and then ships the ballots back to Sycamore.

Without ballots, Johnson said his office was offering people applications for mail-in ballots, just asking them to come back later, or if that wouldn’t work, having them fill out an uncertified ballot that will later be transferred to a certified ballot once one is available.

Only one person had showed up at Johnson’s office looking to vote as of Thursday afternoon, and Johnson said he expects to have certified ballots in his office within a week.

Of course, if we simply moved more of our election process online, we wouldn’t have this problem at all.

The time has come. People are ready for online voting. E-commerce, online banking, and many other types of elections already are conducted securely through the Internet.

Making online voting part of the equasion would greatly boost election turnout, particularly among younger people. It also could dramatically reduce the expense and effort of elections, which are held annually in DeKalb County and carry the same cost if turnout is 9 percent or 90 percent.

Rather than having people staff numerous early voting locations for weeks before an election, a secure terminal could be made available, or people could log in and vote remotely – just as they do when they manage their bank account or 401(k) online.

Certainly, there’s still room for paper-ballot voting, at least for now.

Election Day itself seems to be a decent time to keep that tradition alive – at least until an online voting system can be proved fail-safe and reliable. For the dwindling number of people who aren’t comfortable using a computer to vote, mail-in ballots could be made available during the early voting period, with paper ballots on Election Day. We already manage most other types of sensitive personal information online. It’s time to build an online voting system that will be reliable and secure.

He and three friends were sent to kill four Iraqi police officers in Mosul.

The group tracked the men down, executed them with shots to the back of their heads and then buried them where they fell.

Ali said he had killed eight or nine men in battle, not including the five he’d beheaded.

I asked him to tell me about it. In a soft, compliant voice, he told me he had pushed the Kurdish soldier belly-first onto the ground in front of him.

He placed his knee in the man’s back and then cut his head off with a bayonet.

Did Ali have a message for the families of the peshmerga he’d beheaded?

He went quiet for a second, and then his face screwed up very tightly and he began to sob.

Ali had indeed been a dangerous terrorist, and the world is safer with him behind bars.

But Ali had also been a child soldier, a vulnerable boy coerced into becoming a terrorist.

I interviewed many other fighters like him, some just 14 years old

when the Islamic State came to their villages and compelled them at gunpoint to join.

The Islamic State continues to commit despicable acts of cruelty, but the men who carry out these crimes are not the two-dimensional caricatures they’re painted to be.

They are human beings, many indoctrinated at the most impressionable age and coerced into service.

A few weeks after the interviews, I saw a photo taken after a battle between the Kurds and the Islamic State near Sinjar, Iraq. In the lower left-hand corner is the body of a militant, his head just out of the frame, blood pooling by his left shoulder.

His name is Abdul Aziz Faraj Yusuf, age 16. I’ve seen a lot of photos of dead Islamic State fighters, but as I reread the boy’s age, I felt something different. Gone was the sense of retaliatory satisfaction. This was a dead child. I wasn’t angry anymore. I was heartbroken.

Nothing American about Islamophobia Last week, President Barack Obama made his first visit to a mosque in the United States, staging a high-profile show of support for a religious minority under siege.

In communities across the country, mosques have been vandalized, Muslims have been harassed and political leaders have questioned their patriotism. Hate crimes against Muslim Americans have tripled since the terrorist attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, according to The New York Times.

The proximate cause of this eruption of bigotry is a fear of terrorism associated with Islamic fundamentalists.

But the deeper truth is that a substantial portion of the electorate is in the grip of a hateful jingoism, amplified by economic anxiety but rooted in the nation’s growing diversity.

Indeed, one of the defining features of the current Republican primary campaign is its ugly, out-front Islamophobia, led by Donald Trump. He has gone so far as to vow that Muslims would be barred from the country if he were to be (heaven help us) elected president.

Neurosurgeon Ben Carson has said that no Muslim should serve in the

VIEWS Cynthia Tucker Oval Office. Other GOP candidates have engaged in their own Islamophobia-lite; for example, several have insisted that the U.S. admit no more Syrian refugees.

It was high time, then, for Obama to orchestrate an event in which he reminded Americans of our history, our values, our heritage. He did so Wednesday in a passionate speech to the Islamic Society of Baltimore.

“Let me say as clearly as I can as president of the United States: You fit right here. You’re right where you belong. You’re part of America too. You’re not Muslim or American.

You’re Muslim and American,” he said.

It’s about time.

Earlier in his presidency, Obama had been reluctant to publicly embrace the country’s Muslim population; he was afraid of fueling the ridiculous falsehoods about his own ancestry and religion. According to a CNN/ORC poll conducted in September 2015, 29 per-

cent of Americans – and 43 percent of Republicans – believe he is a Muslim.

Fifty-four percent of Trump supporters think so.

He is not. Obama is a Christian.

(You will surely remember the controversy that erupted during his first presidential campaign over his then-pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, who was ordained in the United Church of Christ. Many of the same voters who vociferously criticized Obama over his association with Wright back then now insist, oddly, that he’s a Muslim.)

The fabrications and conspiracies notwithstanding, the final year of his presidency has brought Obama a freedom from political caution. Moreover, he may have finally understood that he cannot persuade his vehement right-wing critics to be rational. They will always oppose him, doubt him, mistrust him.

To underscore that, GOP presidential candidates Donald Trump and Marco Rubio jumped immediately to criticize Obama’s appearance at the mosque. Trump coyly fanned the flames of birtherism, while Rubio insisted that Obama is “always pitting people against each other.”

Here’s the more important point,

however: There would be absolutely nothing un-American or foreign or subversive if Obama were Muslim. This is a nation that has religious pluralism in its DNA. While the tea partiers who so frequently quote the U.S. Constitution are curiously quiet on this precept, the founding document explicitly states that “no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office ... under the United States.”

In 1797, the U.S. Senate unanimously ratified the Treaty of Tripoli, which says, among other things, that “the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion.” As Obama noted in his speech, Thomas Jefferson -- calling Muslims “Mahometans,” as they were frequently referred to in his day -- wrote that his Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom was meant to protect “the Jew and the Gentile, the Christian and the Mahometan.”

Those who pledge to protect our nation and preserve its values ought to take that more seriously.

SULAYMANIYAH, Iraq – As a journalist based in northern Iraq for the past six years, I’ve seen the war with the Islamic State closer than I’d like. In the summer of 2014, my best friend, a man I’d come to love and respect during my time reporting here, was taken prisoner by the militants.

We were more like brothers than friends, and I haven’t heard from him since.

I was filming about 180 miles away on the evening he disappeared.

I dropped everything and drove through the night to join a small group of his friends and family.

We formed an ad-hoc rescue team, and while the militants stormed west across Iraq, we worked exhaustively to find him. (I can’t say more about him, because doing so could put him in further danger.)

We were driven by rage and desperation.

Months later, Diji Terror, a Kurdish counterterrorism unit based in Sulaymaniyah, granted my request to interview one of its prisoners.

Ali was seized during a nighttime

raid caught on film: In the footage officials showed me, Diji troops handcuffed, blindfolded and bundled him off on a helicopter.

Ali had beheaded Islamic State prisoners, they told me; I couldn’t help but think of my friend.

Finally, a small chance to press the Islamic State for answers about its tactics. A chance for some shred of catharsis.

Ali wore an orange jumpsuit and plastic sandals.

He sat hunched in his chair as a guard lit a thin, white cigarette and passed it to him.

He took it with both hands, his wrists cuffed together, and inhaled deeply. (In Islamic State territory, smoking is forbidden.)

This sight was a far cry from an Islamic State propaganda photo of him dressed in black, standing commandingly behind a Kurdish peshmerga soldier he subsequently executed.

Ali said he was born in 1995 and joined the Islamic State in 2008, at the age of 13.

He was trained as an assassin and was given his first mission two years later.

Good events, strange game

Sentimental favorite Manning, Broncos win Super Bowl 50 SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The romantics and true believers got their wish.

The iconic Peyton Manning rode off into the California sunset with the Lombardi Trophy in one hand and a $2 million bonus check for winning the Super Bowl in the other.

He did not confirm his retirement, instead, asking for a little bit of time and promising to “kiss my wife and kids and drink a lot of Budweiser tonight while I think things over.”

It seems certain Manning will hang ’em up, although as his performance in this game made it clear again – 13 for 23 for 141 yards, no touchdowns, one interception, a fumble and a 56.6 passer rating – that his defense is winning with him, perhaps even in spite of him, not because of

In fact, as football games go, everything about Denver’s 24-10 Super Bowl 50 win was strange.

All of the ancillary events we’ve come to expect from the NFL’s super extravaganza were good.

San Francisco is a great city, and all of the locals were extremely gracious hosts.

The weather was perfect, 73 degrees at kickoff under cloudless, crisp blue skies.

Lady Gaga absolutely nailed the national anthem, and the somewhat

strange conglomeration of Coldplay, Beyonce and Bruno Mars made for a surprisingly satisfying halftime show.

There were issues, of course, but none worth griping about. Everything about Super Bowl 50 was great, except, unfortunately, for the game.

The 60 minutes of action on the field between the Broncos and Panthers was pretty much a hot mess, one of the sloppiest games the Super Bowl has seen in a long time.

Or was it just two great defenses making a ton of plays and the best defense won?

Both Von Miller and DeMarcus Ware were dominant all game long, and in a bit of a shocker, Carolina’s Kony Ealy was the best player on the field with three sacks, an intercep-

tion, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

All three were worthy MVP candidates.

The first quarter was near perfect for Denver, with Manning driving them 64 yards on 10 plays with the opening kickoff before settling for a 34-yard field goal.

Denver held the Panthers to a three-and-out on their first possession, and when Carolina got the ball the second time, on third-and-10 from the Panthers’ 15, Miller – who won the MVP Award with 2½ sacks and two key forced fumbles – sacked and stripped Cam Newton at the 4 and Malik Jackson recovered in the end zone for a 10-0 lead.

A year later, the DeKalb High freshman got his revenge at the IHSA Class 3A DeKalb Regional.

Scarbrough held off his fellow freshman from Huntley High with a 2-1 win in the third-place match at 106 pounds, earning a spot in the Barrington Sectional next week and helping the Barbs take fourth.

“I knew I had to get it back this year,” Scarbrough said. “My whole goal was to stick it out to the end.

Kosowski came close to a takedown with 21 seconds left to take the lead but was ruled out of bounds.

The Barbs finished with seven wrestlers advancing to this weekend’s sectional, led by champion Ulises Jacobo at 132. Also advancing was Christian Komitas (second at 113), Brendan McGee (third at 126), Izaiah Webb (third at 138), Parker Stratton (second at 152) and Jacobe Schmerbach (third at 170).

jseverson@shawmedia.com ROCHELLE – Only three Sycamore wrestlers competed in a championship match Saturday at the Class 2A Rochelle Regional.

However, the Spartans used the sum of their parts – which included only one first-place finisher – to win the regional to advance to the team sectional meet later this month.

“Even before the seeding, knowing who was coming here, we told them that everybody has to pull their weight,” said Sycamore coach Brian Davis, whose Spartans won with a team score of 154 points. “If everybody does their job, we’ll be all right. ... Today, everybody did their job and some people stepped up and did more than their job.”

Kaneland, which had four wrestlers take first place, finished in third with 124.

For the Spartans, who won a regional meet for the first time since 2013, only sophomore Joey Beaudoin (220) took first place individually. He had a

pair of byes before quickly pinning Ramon Fleming (Freeport) in the semifinals and winning anticlimactically on an injury default when Deon Roby (Belvidere) went down during the match.

“When he first went down, I was like, ‘Okay, what happens?’ ” said Beaudoin, who improved to 27-7 on the season. “I asked coach about what happens if he doesn’t get up and he told me I get a forfeit and I thought, ‘That’s going to suck.’ I didn’t want to win on that note, but it feels good to get the win.”

Also for the Spartans, senior Michael Beaudoin (182) and sophomore Matthew Hunter (195) were runner-ups in their class and senior Brian Johnston (138), sophomores Justin Silbaugh (113) and Nolan Jacobson (170) and freshman Trevor Boryla (106) all collected third place in the team’s victory.

Kaneland had a strong, top-heavy afternoon, with Austin Kedzie (106), George Strang (152), Riley Vanik (170) and Colin Gussman (182) taking first, Nathan Orosco (113) and Hayden Patterson (160) finishing second and Zac Parker (195) taking third.

The top three finishers in each weight class advance to the sectional meet, while only the top finishing team (Sycamore) advances to the team sectional meet.

“We went three, four matches in a row – pin, pin, pin,” Davis said. “That’s two extra points for every pin. That was huge.”

More than half of the Spartans who advanced individually did so having to overcome an earlier loss. Johnston (3312) had an up-and-down day at 138 for Sycamore, earning all of his wins – including in the third-place match – via first-round pin, but lost, 9-3, to eventual champion Henry Flores (Belvidere) in the semifinal of the winner’s bracket.

Jacobson (18-18) came into the day with a losing record, but secured a win in the third-place match late in the third round.

Already holding onto a comfortable 11-1 lead over Caleb Blatchford (Belvidere North), Jacobson – who Davis said didn’t wrestle last season – put an exclamation point on the victory with a pin.

“I’ve been thinking about it – I want

to practice more, I want to keep going,” Jacobson said of his mind-set in the winner-advances third-place match. “I didn’t want it to end this way.”

For Kaneland, Vanik hardly broke a sweat in his two quick wins to get his first-place finish. After opening with two byes, Vanik (32-5) pinned Jacobson in 24 seconds in the semifinal and TJ Titock (Burlington Central) in 44 seconds in the championship.

“The mindset coming in was to dominate, every point counts,” Vanik said.

Kedzie (32-7) won all three of his matches via pin, Strang (29-9) survived on a 3-2 ultimate tiebreaker victory over Hampshire’s Wylie Allen (32-3) in the championship, and Gussman (324) once again got the best of Michael Beaudoin (27-13), winning on a 10-5 decision in the title match. Gussman nearly had Beaudoin pinned late in the third, but the Sycamore senior managed to escape.

“I thought I had it,” Gussman said of the pin. “There’s nothing you can do. ...

It’s kind of a bittersweet feeling. I know where I should be, and I didn’t perform to the best of my ability.”

DeKALB – The Northern Illinois wrestling team came up short Sunday, suffering a 26-14 loss to No. 5 Missouri.

Missouri (12-1, 8-0 Mid-American Conference) is the seventh nationally ranked team and second straight ranked team the Huskies have faced this season. NIU lost Friday to No. 19 Kent State. With Sunday’s loss to the Tigers, the Huskies fall to 6-8 overall and 1-5 against MAC teams.

NIU coach Ryan Ludwig said the loss can be used to improve going into the final matches of the regular season.

“We just wrestled the best team in the MAC on paper and went down to the wire with them,” Ludwig said. “We know we can compete with anyone in the country and we’ve had some tight matches against highly ranked opponents that maybe we didn’t come out on top of. But any time we see opponents like this, we can look at the film and see some positions we can improve on.”

Perhaps the biggest individual win of the day for the Huskies was the match between NIU’s Austin Eicher and Missouri’s Zach Synon in the 133-pound weight class. Eicher would eventually win the match in overtime over the No. 10-ranked wrestler to improve his record to 15-11 on the season.

“I thought everyone competed really hard and the bright spot in the lineup was Austin Eicher with his win over a nationally ranked opponent.”

SUPER BOWL 50 – DENVER BRONCOS 24, CAROLINA PANTHERS 10

No masterpiece, but Manning rides off with win

The Associated Press SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The best thing for Peyton Manning is that he won the Super Bowl.

A close second – he never has to lace ’em up again.

Constantly harassed, never quite comfortable – sort of the way the whole season has played out – Manning walked away with his second Super Bowl title Sunday night, after Denver’s defense all but handed him the Lombardi Trophy with a 24-10 victory over the Carolina Panthers.

Manning wouldn’t budge on whether this was, in fact, his last game.

“I’ll take some time to reflect,” he said.

“I’ve got a couple priorities first. I’m going to go kiss my wife and kids.”

If he bothers watching his last game, he’ll see a quarterback who looked all of his 39 years and more.

He was creaky and off-target at times.

He got bamboozled into his first interception of this year’s playoffs and could’ve thrown a few more had the Panthers’ defenders had better hands.

Manning lost a fumble, as well.

His most important throw? A pass that flew 10 yards out of the end zone but drew a defensive holding call that set up the game-clinching touchdown. He also completed 13 passes for 141 yards and got the Broncos moving to start both halves.

That was more than enough. Those small wisps of offense were enough to set up a few field goals, keep the Broncos in good field position most of the night – then get the heck out of the way and let a smothering, historically good defense win this game with seven sacks and four turnovers.

Denver was on the verge of becoming the first team in the 50-year history of the Super Bowl to win without scoring a touchdown on offense. MVP Von Miller’s second strip of Cam Newton gave the Broncos at the Carolina 4. Three plays later, helped by the holding call, the Broncos had the

Manning became the first quarterback to win the Super Bowl with two franchises. He joined his brother, Eli, and 10 other quarterbacks as multiple Super Bowl winners.

He’s been taking it week by week this year, insisting he’s not thinking about what he’ll do after the season.

Now that it’s over, he’ll have to decide whether he wants to walk away on top – same as his boss, John Elway, did after he won his second title back in 1999.

Hard to imagine he’d want to come back, after guiding the Broncos to a fullteam-effort title, the likes of which hardly anyone envisioned when Elway signed him four years ago.

Manning spent the first three of those years rewriting the record book. In Year 4, he was injured and diminished, and it turned into the best finish of the four.

He won the title this season playing

the role of game manager. He won with a Super Bowl passer rating of 56.6 that, unbelievably, wasn’t that much lower than what he compiled this season.

He won by handing off on third-and-9 late in this game while nursing a lead — that wouldn’t have happened in earlier in his 18-year career.

“This game was much like the season has been,” Manning said. “It tested our toughness, our resilience, our unselfishness.”

A game like this that would normally send him scurrying to the film room, trying to figure out how to make things better for next week.

Next week doesn’t matter. Next year might not either.

Ugly, but beautiful.

“You get asked a lot of questions,” Manning said. “You reflect on the coaches, family members, friends who’ve helped you get to ... this point. I’m very grateful.”

Denver only had six penalties for 51 yards, but the game was really chippy with three of the Broncos’ flags being unnecessary roughness calls, and four of those on Carolina.

There were six turnovers, four by the Panthers and two from Denver.

Carolina managed only 315 yards of total offense; the Broncos only 194.

So we ponder the question again, was Super Bowl 50 really great defense or just a disappointing football game?

What we can say for sure is Newton, the extremely worthy MVP of the regular season, was awful, completing only 18 of his 41 throws, and his unwillingness to fight for his second fumble with 4:04 left in the game and his team

still down only six will be discussed all winter and spring.

However, even if the game was disappointing, the Broncos are anything but disappointing champions. Their defense now will be compared to the Steelers, Bears and Ravens’ great Super Bowl teams, they overcame a remarkable number of obstacles just to get to Super Bowl 50 and now they will have the rings that make it all worth it.

In the end, anyone who isn’t thrilled for Manning just doesn’t have a heart.

My husband and I pay Eli’s car insurance, cellphone bill, toll tag, life insurance policy and whatever other things come up (passport, gym membership). Eli’s mom assists with all of his utility bills, in addition to depositing money in his account monthly. They even turned over Eli’s 529 tuition account to him.

I have tried explaining to my husband they are enabling Eli, and the umbilical cord should have been cut years ago.

Eli has never earned more than $12,000 a year, and has no desire to try because he has an endless flow of financial support.

His dad is retired but continues to work in order to help Eli – although he won’t admit it.

This is straining our relationship because when I bring up this issue, he feels I am attacking his son. Am I unrealistic to expect an adult to support himself? – Seeing Clearly In

Cause of nightmares a mystery Note to readers: This column is an update of one that ran originally in November 2012.

Dear Dr. K: Is there anything I can do to stop

having terrible nightmares? They scare me, and ruin my sleep.

Dear Reader: There might be something you can do. The first thing you should know is everyone has nightmares occasionally. Just as we don’t really know why we sleep, we don’t really understand nightmares. We also don’t know why some people are more likely to have them.

Nightmares and two related phenomena – sleep terrors and sleep-related panic attacks – can make sleep more stressful than restful: • Nightmares can be a side effect of certain medications. These include antidepressants, narcotics and barbiturates. So talk to your doctor to see if any medication you’re taking might be contributing to your problem.

Nightmares also can occur if you stop taking certain drugs, including drugs used to treat them (such as benzodiazepines), if those drugs are stopped abruptly. Alcoholics who stop drinking often have nightmares.

If your frequent nightmares are not likely due to medicines you are taking, then counseling may help. You may be wrestling with problems that cause anxiety – and would cause anyone anxiety.

A type of behavioral therapy known as desensitization may help. In this therapy, you will be asked to recall the details of your nightmare and use relaxation techniques to overcome your fear. The therapist may guide you through typical dream sequences. For example, the therapist can help you imagine confronting or driving off a pursuer.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff themselves out in your nightmares. I’m a skeptic. I’m not aware of solid research that demonstrates psychoanalysis is more helpful in reducing nightmares than behavioral therapy.

• During a sleep terror, the sleeper may let out a bloodcurdling scream, sit bolt upright and attempt to fight or flee. The person may seem confused and agitated. After the spell is over, he or she is likely to go right back to sleep. Later, the person might not remember what happened.

If you consistently remember your nightmares, you’re probably not suffering from sleep terrors.

Medications such as benzodiazepines are sometimes prescribed for sleep terrors.

Hypnosis or a relaxation technique known as guided imagery also may help.

• If you have sleep-related panic attacks, you may awaken suddenly because of episodes of intense panic. You may experience a racing heartbeat, sweating, trembling, breathlessness, or the feeling something terrible is about to happen – as if you are about to die.

Anti-anxiety drugs are often useful for such panic attacks.

The cause of these sleep disorders is a mystery. They might seem like a trivial mystery, but I think if we understood them, we’d understand a lot more about how the brain works.

As I mentioned last week, when you are thinking about game, not slam, your goal should be to reach four hearts or four spades. If each of those contracts is deemed impossible, then you look toward three no-trump. Only if certain those three games are hopeless will you steer into five of a minor.

As an example, look at the North hand. You open one club, and partner responds one heart. What would you rebid?

After the preamble, the answer is easier than it might have been.

Bid two hearts, not two clubs or one no-trump. Then South will presumably jump to four hearts. (If he rebids three no-trump, and West leads a spade, South will have to guess well.)

How should South plan the play after a spade start to East’s queen?

This contract requires careful handling. If declarer wins the first trick with his ace, draws trumps, and takes the club finesse, he ought to go down. East should return a spade, and South will lose two spades, one diamond and one club. Instead, the simplest line is to run the club 10 at trick two. Even if East ducks, and declarer repeats the finesse, he is still safe. Probably, though, East will take his club king immediately and shift to a diamond, but South plays his king (or queen) and cannot lose more than one trick in each side suit.
