A reminder to beware of outsized promises POLL Our first “From the Archives” column was

enlightening, in a forget-the-past-and-you’ll-repeat-it kind of way.

The column, which was written by News Editor Brett Rowland and appeared in Wednesday’s Daily Chronicle, was on a big project that promised big benefits – but never delivered them for much of anyone.

The topic was DeKalb County’s brush in the mid-1980s with being the site of a huge underground particle accelerator. The Superconducting Super Collider, which would have extended from Fermilab in Batavia clear into our county, was a source of great hope, some controversy, and some pretty wild promises.

It would be the “scientific prize of the century.” There was talk about hundreds of jobs, a big, rather invasive construction effort, of how this scientific wonder would turn Northern Illinois University into another Harvard.

Government bodies and other interest groups, such as the DeKalb County Farm Bureau, were asked for their support. The County Board got behind it, the farm bureau stayed neutral.

In the end, DeKalb County lost out – but in doing so, it won. In what must have come

Had I been here at the time, I probably would have supported the plan. I like jobs, and the idea of hosting something that could lead to scientific breakthroughs would be exciting.

But there are cases where developers, regardless what they plan to build, make grandiose promises they can’t keep.

It was true in the 1980s, and it remains so today.

POLICE MANHUNT PROMPTS SCHOOL LOCKDOWN IN LELAND

A school was put on lockdown Thursday morning as sheriff’s deputies from DeKalb and LaSalle counties sought a man who they suspected was armed and in the area.

The lockdown at Leland School was later lifted after police found the man hiding under a vehicle behind Casey’s General Store at 180 N Main St., and arrested Bobby Varner, 32, on a Sycamore warrant for violating an order of protection.

Police were called after Varner allegedly told an acquaintance that he was suicidal. Varner also told the acquaintance that he had a gun and would shoot anyone who approached him, DeKalb County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Andy Sullivan.

Bulls guard Jimmy Butler was officially listed as questionable for the tonight’s game against the Denver Nuggets, but the All-Star will be smart about the soreness in his left knee.

Especially because he already lost a bet with his trainer.

Butler made a friendly wager with his personal trainers that he would play in all 82 regular-season games, and that ended Wednesday night when a knee-on-knee collision from Monday was still acting up.

A source did say Butler felt better Thursday but was receiving heavy treatment on the knee and would test it in the morning shootaround.

DeKalb County students celebrate Catholic Schools Week

ksmith@shawmedia.com The untamed energy of wired fourth-graders erupted throughout DeKalb’s St. Mary School gym Thursday, and at the center of it all was 9-year-old Levi Thompson.

A strange rush of nerves and eagerness jolted through the fourth-grader as he repeated the word that would lock him into the final round of the all-school spelling bee – one of the final events of Catholic Schools Week in DeKalb County.

“Q-u-i-d, space, p-r-o, space, q-u-o,” he said. “Quid pro quo.”

The crowd, composed of the school’s fourth- through eighth-grade students, was elated with their soon-to-be spelling bee winner.

The energy contained in the gym Thursday afternoon was the same thrill students had been expressing all week, as they celebrated Catholic schools everywhere, St. Mary Principal Roseann Feldmann said. National Catholic Schools Week is the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States, according to the National Catholic Schools Association. This year’s theme was “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.”

“It’s been really great. The kids have had a lot of fun,” she said. “There is some seriousness with it, too. We’re collecting baby items for the We Care Pregnancy [Clinic] during this week.

The spelling bee obviously is fun, but it’s a serious endeavor. I mean, all those kids really wanted to win. They were trying hard.”

The DeKalb school will end Catholic Schools Week with a student vs. teacher volleyball game Friday.

Meanwhile, at St. Mary’s Catholic School in Sycamore, students were preparing Thursday to perform a play written by their Principal Patricia Wackenhut.

“It is about two children who live in Fatima who have visions of the Blessed Virgin and no one in the town believes them,” 12-year-old Caitlin Conrad said.

“They all think it’s a lie until the Blessed Virgin performs a gigantic miracle.”

The school has also collected more than 380 personal hygiene products to donate to Safe Passage, which provides services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in DeKalb County.

Students seemed most appreciative to attend a school where their religious and academic education go hand-inhand.

“It’s fun to work as a team and stuff and learn about working in groups,

learning about always believing in God and the Blessed Virgin,” 10-year old Sycamore student Trevor Jakuvczak said. “I think it’s really nice.”

It isn’t just the county’s Catholic schools celebrating this week. The week is a national effort to show appreciation for Catholic schools, with guidelines set by each region’s respective Archdiocese.

Kishwaukee College, union reps talk layoffs

DeKALB – The Kishwaukee College Board has entered into talks with its unions to discuss layoffs because of the lack of funding, officials said.

Board members are set to discuss potential layoffs at their meeting Tuesday, which will start at 3 p.m. Force reductions could be voted on as soon as the board’s March 8 meeting.

“The college has drafted a plan that the Board of Trustees will consider at their regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, February 9, that will address a projected $3.8 million deficit for fiscal year 17,” Kishwaukee College President Laurie Borowicz said in an emailed statement. “The proposed plan includes reductions in workforce, general cost reductions, and additional revenue strategies.”

Bob Johnson, board president, said it was time for a serious discussion. The state of Illinois has been without a budget since July and the college is feeling

the effects of operating without state funding, which makes up 22 percent of its $23 million budget, Johnson said.

“We were planning on receiving $5 million and got none of it,” he said. “And we have no idea if we’re going to get any next year, either.”

Johnson said that representatives from the college’s unions and Borowicz met this week. Faculty members and support staff are both unionized. More than 100 adjunct faculty members voted in June to form a union.

Johnson said the college has already initiated other spending cuts to Laurie avoid letting anyone go.

Borowicz “We have already cut travel,” he said. “We are not replacing open positions. Capital projects are on hold. We are doing everything possible to avoid having to reduce head count, but if nothing happens in Springfield, we have no choice.”

waukee College Support Staff Union, said officials have said 10 to 19 support staff positions could be eliminated, mostly secretarial and clerical positions.

There are currently 85 filled positions in the support staff union, with an additional nine that have not been filled because of cutbacks, Bresson said.

Union contracts include provisions for reduction in workforce, which include an effective date of July 1, Bresson

said.

“While we hate to see anyone go, as long as the college follows the contract we will be OK,” Bresson said. “Obviously, everyone is very scared and sad, and no one wants to see anyone go, but the college is short 22 percent of its budget from the state and they have to make payroll eventually.”

Matt Read, president of the Kishwaukee College Education Association, which represents the college’s full-time faculty, said the the issue is complex and that faculty members would continue to provide the best service to their students.

“Kishwaukee College is following all contractual and legal obligations concerning the layoffs,” he said in an emailed statement. “Both the union and management are in a tough situation, and we’re working through this very complex issue.”

“We shall continue providing a world-class education for our students,” he added. “But without state funding, our students are left with uncertainty.”

County leaders welcome neighbors’ enterprise plan

DeKALB – Two neighboring counties have applied to the state for enterprise zone designations, a move DeKalb County officials welcome as a complement to the region and not competition.

Lee and Ogle counties combined to apply to the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity for the special designation, which is pushed as a stimulant for job growth and investment. The two counties, located west of DeKalb County, have had the designation before and are among a pool of 18 vying this year.

DeKalb County was approved for a 15-square-mile zone, which includes industrial areas in Sandwich, Waterman, DeKalb, Sycamore and Genoa.

Gouker pointed out that the economic tool brought a regional intermodal facility to the city of Rochelle.

He said the facility benefits multiple nearby counties.

Lee and Ogle combined in their recent application because of their proximity and to have more size and population as part of their request,

according to Gouker.

DeKalb County has begun to market its enterprise zone, which was effective as of Jan. 1. A holdup last summer by the Illinois Department of Commerce with certifying the zone threatened to push back that date.

State regulators blamed the delay on the state not having a budget in place.

Bob Brown, head of the DeKalb County Board’s economic development committee, noted what he called unique appeal among the three counties to potential businesses. He said the cities of Rochelle and DeKalb, for example, could optimally share such things as workforce and products.

“We’re expecting that its a winwin for each of us,” Brown said of an enterprise zone in each of the three counties.

In DeKalb County, early voting begins without ballots

eolson@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Early voting was to begin Thursday in Illinois, but at DeKalb County Clerk Doug Johnson’s office, there were no certified ballots.

Johnson said the ballots weren’t available because the Illinois State Board of Elections had only certified them Monday, not leaving enough time to have ballots printed and available.

But the clerk said he has alternative options for those who want to vote early.

“Once the state certifies to us, it takes about five days for us to get everything processed to produce a ballot,” Johnson said. “I’m trying to accommodate the voters of DeKalb County. This period of early voting is always slow, no matter what the race.“ Johnson said the delay was because of the number of objections filed against candidates this year. State law states that ballots can not be certified until all objections against candidates are heard.

As of Thursday afternoon, only one person had come to Johnson’s office at 110 E. Sycamore St. seeking to cast a

ballot, he said. Without certified ballots, Johnson said he planned to offer voters several alternatives.

Voters can be provided with an application for a mail-in ballot, or if they are leaving town and won’t have access to mail, they can cast an uncertified ballot, Johnson said. That uncertified ballot will be kept in a secure location until it can be reviewed by election judges and transferred onto a certified ballot later.

Or they can just wait a few days and try again.

“We’re telling people in the next week for sure we’ll have a ballot,” Johnson said. “We’re giving ourselves some cushion in that time frame.”

The clerk’s office is the only place for DeKalb County voters to cast ballots this early. Beginning Feb. 29, early polling places will open at the DeKalb Township Building, 2323 S. Fourth St., in Sycamore at the legislative center Gathertorium, 200 N. Main St., Sycamore, at Northern Illinois University’s Holmes Student Center, 340 Carroll Ave., DeKalb, at Kirkland Village Hall, 511 W. Main St., and the Sandwich Community Fire Protection District, 310 E Railroad St.

Leland School lockdown is prompted by manhunt

news@daily-chronicle.com LELAND – A school was put on lockdown Thursday morning as sheriff’s deputies from DeKalb and LaSalle counties sought a man who they suspected was armed and in the area.

The lockdown at Leland School, which serves 263 students in kindergarten through high school, was later lifted after police found the man hiding under a vehicle behind Casey’s General Store at 180 N Main St., and arrested him.

Bobby Varner, 32, was arrested on a Sycamore warrant for violating an order of protection.

Police were called after Varner allegedly told an acquaintance that he was suicidal. Varner also told the acquaintance that he had a gun and would shoot anyone who approached him, DeKalb County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Andy Sullivan.

LaSalle County Sheriff’s deputies and Leland police walk out of Leland School on Thursday after the lockdown was lifted. A manhunt ended when a man was arrested after being found hiding under a vehicle behind the Casey’s General Store in Leland.

Varner was arrested without incident. He didn’t have a gun, Sullivan said.

Leland School District 1 Superintendent Jodi Moore said it was the first time that the school went into a lockdown, where no one was allowed to leave classrooms. The lockdown lasted about a half hour before it was

lifted shortly after noon.

She said police did a good job notifying officials about what they needed to do to keep students safe.

“The police were very proactive,” Moore said.

Police pursued the man for several hours, LaSalle County Sheriff Tom Templeton said.

DAN MANKA Dan Manka, age 61, of Hampshire, went to be with his Lord on January 31, 2016.

In 1966, he met the love of his life, Roberta Fisher. Dan and Bobbi were married in 1972 and renewed their vows in 2012, with family and friends there to celebrate their love.

Dan and Bobbi were members of Church in DeKalb, where Dan was a Deacon before moving to Hampshire and are now members of Church on the Rock in Huntley. They feel

Dan was an active member of his community no matter where he lived. Dan joined the Junction City, Oregon Jaycees. When they moved to Schaumburg, in 1988, Bobbi and Dan joined the Schaumburg Jaycees. Dan continued his Jaycee involvement in the North Region and the Illinois Jaycees. Dan was honored as JCI Senator #52832.

SYCAMORE – A Northern Illinois University student faces felony charges for selling an assortment of club drugs.

Richard A. Jansen, 25, of the 100 block of Pine Street, DeKalb, was charged with multiple counts with possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver within 1,000 feet of a church, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to court records. If convicted of the most serious charges, he could face six to 30 years in prison.

DeKalb County Judge Bradley Waller set Jansen’s bond at $25,000 Thursday. He posted bail and was released.

DeKalb police, working with both the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office Richard A. and NIU police, searched Jansen Jansen’s home with a warrant Wednesday, according to court records. Jansen was home at the time and told police that he had drugs in a safe.

Police recovered 3.4 grams of MDMA, 1.5 grams of MDA, 11 doses of LSD and 13.2 grams of ketamine. MDMA is com-

Police: 6 found dead in Chicago home The ASSOCIATED PRESS

Police arrived at the single-family brick home just after 1 p.m. They looked inside and saw one body, entered and found five more bodies. The bodies had signs of trauma, but authorities have not determined the cause of death.

Authorities were still working to identify the dead. Escalante said it’s probable they were all family members, and police were trying to locate relatives. The child is thought to be 10 to 12 years old.

A relative of the family who lived in the home said Thursday evening that the family seemed happy. She said living in the home were a couple, their son, their daughter and the daughter’s two children.

“They were a normal family. Everything was fine,” Noemi Martinez, 29, said from Dallas during a phone inter-

view in Spanish. She said her husband was a nephew and cousin of the home’s residents.

Martinez said the father worked at a factory in Chicago and the mother was a housewife. They were originally from the Mexican state of Guanajuato and had lived in Chicago for about a decade, Martinez said.

“Right now, we just want to know who did this. They didn’t deserve this.

We don’t understand what happened,” she said.

Escalante said the investigation would take time but emphasized there was no imminent threat.

“At this time, we don’t believe that there is any threat to the surrounding community or any known threat right now to the immediate neighborhood,” he said.

In the neighborhood, three teenage boys said they were worried about a

classmate at Rachel Carson Elementary School who lived in the home. They feared he was among the dead.

“His favorite sport was soccer,” Aaron Villazana said of his friend, and Emmanuel Hernandez chimed: “He’d get out of school and play soccer. ... He liked sharing.”

“I just saw him three days ago. He was walking by. He told me, ‘How are your basketball games going?’ ” said Jesus Anderade.

Earlier, Rosa De La Torre’s 13-yearold son comforted her as she sat down and sobbed near the home of her friend, whom she thought could be among the victims.

Another neighbor, Lettie Magas, 68, lamented what she said has been an increase in crime in recent years.

“I feel safe as long as it’s daylight out, but I won’t come out at night, no way,” Magas said.

Judge: Suit seeking to stop Lucas Museum can go on

CHICAGO – A federal judge on Thursday allowed a lawsuit to proceed that seeks to stop “Star Wars” creator George Lucas from building a $400 million museum along Chicago’s lakefront, leaving open the possibility that the museum as currently envisioned may not be built.

Friends of the Parks, a nonprofit group that filed the lawsuit, argued that construction of the 300,000-square-foot Lucas Museum of Narrative Art would violate public-trust laws that restrict development along Lake Michigan and that guarantee open public access.

In a written opinion released after a brief hearing in U.S. District Court in Chicago, Judge John Darrah explained that he was rejecting the city’s request to toss the lawsuit because he thinks Friends of the Parks makes plausible arguments that turning over the land “is not for the benefit of the public but will impair public interest in the land ... and promote private ... commercial interests.”

CHICAGO – Gov. Bruce Rauner said Thursday that he wants lawmakers to approve a plan that would allow the Illinois Department of Transportation to use a public-private partnership to add lanes to a busy stretch of Interstate 55 in the Chicago area.

The Republican governor’s plan includes the possibility of tolls that he says could cover the estimated $425 million cost of the project. But it also would require approval by the Democratic-controlled General Assembly at a time when lawmakers are sharply divided over the state-budget stalemate.

The project would add at least one lane to Interstate 55 in each direction between Interstate 355 and Interstate 90/94. The state plans to finish federal environmental studies later this year.

Tribune Publishing gets $44.4M from investor

CHICAGO – Tribune Publishing, the troubled owner of the Chicago Tribune and other newspapers around the country, said it received a $44.4 million cash infusion from a Chicago investor who has a stake in its rival newspaper, the Chicago Sun-Times.

The company also suspended its quarterly dividend Thursday to free up more money in the aftermath of a difficult year.

Revenue has slumped as readers and advertisers continue to migrate online and the company has trimmed staff to cut costs. Its stock has plummeted 68 percent in the last year.

CHICAGO – Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel says the upcoming delivery of almost 800 new stun guns will ensure that every police officer will have access to a Taser, following a series of high-profile fatal shootings in the city.

Emanuel’s office said late Wednesday that by June 1, all officers responding to calls will have Tasers that they will be issued at the start of their shifts.

The department will have 1,481 stun guns once the 780 new Tasers arrive.

Officers must go through training and certification.

Emanuel announced the city would increase the number of stun guns available for police on Dec. 30, after public outrage erupted anew over a video showing a white police officer shooting black teenager Laquan McDonald 16 times.

The two Democrats kept up a markedly more contentious tone than when they last debated before the presidential voting in Iowa, and it signaled how the race for the nomination has tightened five days ahead of the firstin-the-nation primary in New Hampshire on Tuesday.

The two argued over ideas, over tactics and over who has the liberal credentials to deliver on an agenda of better access to health care, more affordable college, dealing with income inequality and more.

It was Clinton who was the main aggressor, saying Sanders never could achieve his ambitious and costly proposals. Then she took after the Vermont senator for his efforts to cast her as beholden to Wall Street interests because of the campaign donations and speaking fees she’s accepted from the financial sector.

“It’s time to end the very artful smear that you and your campaign have been carrying out,” she said.

Sanders, for his part, suggested her loyalties were colored by a reliance on big corporate donors.

“Secretary Clinton does represent the establishment,” he said. “I represent – I hope – ordinary Americans.”

Clinton may say the right things, he suggested, but “one of the things we should do is not only talk the talk but walk the walk.”

Where Clinton aimed considerable criticism at Sanders, the Vermont senator focused much of his fire on what he says is a political system rigged against ordinary Americans.

He said that when a “kid gets caught with marijuana, that kid has a police record.” But when “a Wall Street executive destroys the economy” and pays a $5 billion settlement, he has “no criminal record.”

“That is what power is about, that is what corruption is about. And that is what has to change in the United States of America,” he said.

Clinton, unwilling to cede the issue to Sanders, insisted her regulatory policies would be tougher on Wall Street than his.

“I’ve got their number,” she said, “the Wall Street guys.”

Clinton called Sanders’ sweeping proposals on health care and education “just not achievable,” while Sanders countered that Clinton was willing to settle for less than Americans deserve.

“I do not accept the belief that the United States of America can’t do that,” Sanders said of his plan for universal health care and of his efforts to take on “the rip-offs of the pharmaceutical industry.”

The race for the Democratic nomination, once seen as a sure thing for Clinton, intensified this week after Sanders held the former secretary of state to a whisper-thin margin of victory in Iowa’s leadoff caucuses.

FCC not doing enough to restore faith in democracy TV watchers need to brace themselves for the worst this election season.

Hundreds of millions of dollars are likely to be poured into political ads narrated by ominous voices and designed to influence voters’ ballot choices.

Some commercials, paid for by campaigns, will conclude with candidates saying they approve the message. Viewers should be extra skeptical of any ads brought to them by independent political action committees with benign sounding names such as Priorities USA Action, Believe Again, Unintimidated PAC and Right to Rise USA. Such names reveal nothing about who the true sponsors of the advertisements really are. The Federal Communications Commission, which seems to turn a blind eye, should require more transparency and has the authority to do so: • Section 315 of the Communications Act requires broadcast stations to identify sponsors of political ads in files available for public viewing. Not every station is complying, according to extensive research by civic watchdog groups, such as the Sunlight Foundation, the Campaign Legal Center and Common Cause.

• Section 317 requires advertisers and broadcasters to disclose to viewers and listeners the “true identity” of the person, group or entity paying for a political ad.

Many don’t, and the FCC has failed to enforce this rule.

Last week, 168 Democratic members of the U.S. House of Representatives signed a letter urging FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler to quickly require broadcasters reveal the names of political-ad sponsors on the air.

According to OpenSecrets.org, conservative groups by far dominate this type of campaign advertising.

Democracy is weakened when influence over the public airwaves is controlled by dark-money groups, whether on the right or the left, which have the power to raise and spend unlimited funds.

Citizens have a right to know when and why megarich individuals, such as former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the industrialist Koch brothers, pour their wealth into advocacy.

That’s why the FCC must do more as a regulator to restore trust in American democracy by ensuring campaign commercials are more transparent.

Mental health care changes coming to county On behalf of the DeKalb County Community Mental Health Board, I want to pass along some new and important developments when it comes to mental health services in DeKalb County.

With the direction and hard work of DeKalb County Presiding Judge Robbin Stuckert and other major stakeholders, a Mental Health Court soon will be established in DeKalb County. When up and running, those with mental health issues instead of being treated as criminals will be diverted from the criminal justice system to service providers that can help them to live independently.

Never in its history has the Mental Health Board been able to work directly with KishHealth System. With the acquisition of the Ben Gordon Center by KishHealth, the board can work collaboratively with KishHealth as it does with all the agencies it funds, to better mental health services in DeKalb County. As a much larger entity, KishHealth, with its resources, can better meet the needs of our residents and can expand on those services.

One example of expansion of services is a triage program for those with a mental illness who are in need of intense services. The board and KishHealth are working together to establish such a program, possibly at the building that houses the Ben Gordon Center. A triage program is best described as providing intensive outpatient mental health services that may include crisis intervention beds.

As most have heard by now, KishHealth and Northwestern Memorial HealthCare have merged to form a single entity. That entity now includes Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield with 54 inpatient beds. The importance of this lies in the “continuity of care” model now being used across the spectrum of all medical

Specifically this means that those in need of inpatient mental health services are returned to the community with immediate access to psychiatric care and medications if prescribed. It used to be prior to the “continuity of care” model someone was returned to the community to another entity without access to their medical records, oftentimes 30 day follow-up appointment and two weeks of medication. This will no longer occur.

Another advantage is the quality of care and treatment. In a fully staffed unit providing daily services, the patient will receive the best care available. I have heard in the community many who have said “If I have a cardiac event, I want the best and most experienced medical team to treat me and if I have to travel to get that it’s OK with me.” Absolutely the same can be said for mental health inpatient treatment. Inpatient mental health treatment should be the “treatment of last resort”. As staff attorney for the Guardianship and Advocacy Commission, I represented patients of inpatient behavioral health units in McHenry and Kane counties that included hospitals in Woodstock, Elgin and Aurora. I also represented patients at the Elgin Mental Health Center.

On a daily basis, I was on those units meeting with my clients, staff, and doctors. All of my clients were being held there involuntarily, sometimes a danger to themselves other patients and the staff. Sometimes medicated to the point of catatonia against their wills. There were even those that were forced to have electro-convulsive treatments against

their will. Yes, even today there are a few who are restrained and given “shock” treatments.

It is for these reasons that new models have been and are being developed that involve intensive outpatient treatment to provide services before a patient is in crisis. With the help of KishHealth, those services will be here in our community advancing “continuity of care,” including other service providers in the community and most importantly including the patient’s family.

Another benefit is to law enforcement when called to a situation involving a person in need of services, they can transport to the triage center in the community and return to their important work in a much shorter period of time.

Another important development is the creation of the “Mental Health Coordinating Council” consisting of important stakeholders in the community. This council is now in the process of understanding and defining gaps in local mental health services, identifying public and private opportunities to expand care and developing immediate and actionable solutions to mental health issues.

I would like to conclude by saying that the Mental Health Board consists of intelligent, thoughtful, hardworking volunteers that along with the Executive Director and Administrative Assistant, have dedicated themselves to assisting those with mental illness, substance abuse issues, and developmental disabilities.

I was a waitress at a family restaurant and a local banker thought he could stick his hand up my skirt because my hands were full of dinner. In the time it took me to deposit that steaming pile of pasta onto his lap, I realized I was never going to be that girl.

Like so many other women, I soon learned that knowing who you are is no small victory, but making it clear to the rest of the world is one of the hardest and longest nonpaying jobs a woman will ever have. I’ll spare you my personal list of jobs with unequal pay and unwelcome advances. No good comes from leading with our injuries.

It helped – it still helps – that my working-class parents raised me to be ready for the fight. My father was a union utility worker, my mother a nurse’s aid. Both of them died in their 60s, living just long enough to see all of their children graduate from college and start their lives.

I’ve said many times that my parents did the kind of work that wore their bodies out so that we would never have to. That, too, is my legacy.

But, please, tell me again how I don’t know what it means to be a progressive.

Last month, I started teaching journalism at Kent State University.

One of the first things I did was to lug to my office the large metal sign that used to hang over the tool shed at my father’s plant. “The best safety device is a careful man,” it reads. Nice try, management.

I’m stickin’ with the union, Woody Guthrie sang.

Every time I walk into my office, that sign is the first thing I see.

Remember, it whispers.

What does any of this have to do with why I admire Hillary Clinton?

Nothing. But it has everything to do with why I don’t need any lecture from somebody who thinks he or she is going to tell me who I am because I do.

One of the hallmarks of a progressive is a willingness to challenge a power structure that leaves too many people looking up and seeing the bottom of a boot. I want power for the people who don’t have it. And for the rest of my conscious days, I will do my small part to help get it. I love it when detractors describe Clinton as too angry and not “warm and fuzzy” enough.

I want a leader, not a Pooh Bear.

I don’t want to diminish anyone who supports Bernie Sanders. I’m married to Sanders’ colleague, Sen. Sherrod Brown, which is how I’ve gotten to know him over the past 10 years.

He’s a good man.

If you support Sanders in this Democratic presidential primary, I don’t assume that you hate women.

See how that works?

But if you tell me that, should Sanders lose, you won’t vote for Hillary Clinton, then stop calling yourself a liberal or a progressive or anything other than someone invested in just getting your way.

There is so much at stake here. The fight for women’s reproductive rights is not a sporting event. Our cities are rife with racial tensions, and too few of us white Americans fail to see this as our problem, too. The Affordable Care Act is not enough, but it is the first fragile steps toward universal health care. It already is saving lives of people who had nothing – no health care, no safety net, nothing – before it passed.

Finally, the growing gulf between the obscenely privileged and everyone else is a reason to get out of bed every morning – if we care about the future of the people we are supposed to be fighting for.

If you would sacrifice those who need us most because you didn’t get your way, then please, save me your lectures and get out of my way.

From steadfast Iowa to contrarian New Hampshire

Strong showings in the Iowa caucuses by Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio sent them roaring into next week’s Republican presidential primary in New Hampshire with a head of steam at the expense of a deflated Donald Trump.

On the Democratic side, the virtual tie between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders puts intense pressure on Clinton to rebound in New Hampshire and foreshadows a protracted struggle in a race she expected to dominate.

New Hampshire is renowned for its independence and contrarian voting habits and anything can happen there.

Trump and Sanders enjoy big polling leads they now need to turn into New Hampshire victories. That will be a test of whether Sanders can retain the enthusiasm of his youthful supporters, and whether Trump fans still consider him a winner after losing the first contest of the 2016 campaign.

Rubio didn’t win Iowa but he was a

big a winner there. His third-place finish was closer than polls predicted, and he almost caught Trump. His challenge now is to persuade mainstream Republican voters to coalesce behind his candidacy to foil the self-styled outsiders Cruz and Trump. To do that, he’ll need a strong showing in New Hampshire against Jeb Bush, John Kasich and Chris Christie – three other mainstream Republicans who are competing vigorously in the Granite State.

New Hampshire comebacks are not unusual. Clinton staged one after Barack Obama beat her in Iowa eight years ago. Ronald Reagan in 1980 and George H.W. Bush in 1988 scored critical New Hampshire wins after losing Iowa.

Of course, Clinton’s New Hampshire victory in 2008 wasn’t enough to propel her to victory over Obama for the nomination. This time she’s counting on strong organizations and well- financed campaigns in later contests to overcome the unexpected early success of Sanders, a senator from Vermont.

New Hampshire’s outcome is hard to predict because about 40 percent of its voters are independents who are allowed to decide on primary day whether to vote in either party’s contest. A candidate who scores big with these voters can spring a surprise. And surprise already has been the story of this campaign, in which little has played out as expected.

On the Republican side, there are several huge question marks, in addition to the overriding one of Trump’s durability: • Can Rubio, the Florida senator, get a bounce from his strong Iowa finish and, thereby, crowd out the other mainstream contenders? He will be the focus of a lot of fire from rivals over the next few days to prevent this. If he places first or second in New Hampshire, he would become a top contender for the nomination.

• Can Kasich, Bush or Christie do well Tuesday? Each faces virtual elimination otherwise. And each probably has to finish ahead of the other two and

Rubio for a plausible pathway to the nomination.

• Can Cruz ride his Iowa victory to a respectable showing in New Hampshire, a state he’d been inclined to ignore but now intends to contest? He’d planned to focus instead on South Carolina, where the third GOP contest takes place Feb. 20 and where conservative voters are more of a force. His campaign manager has predicted the Texan will prevail there, although polls show Trump ahead. Another factor might be whether Ben Carson, the retired pediatric neurosurgeon who finished a distant fourth in Iowa, stays in the race; he and Cruz compete for evangelical Christian voters.

New Hampshire is likely to winnow out at least three or four candidates.

Iowa effectively took out half a dozen, including Rick Santorum and Mike Huckabee, winners of the past two Republican caucuses there.

Have I mentioned lately how much I’m enjoying the lectures from selfavowed liberals who insist my respect for Hillary Clinton is proof that I am not a “real progressive”?

I haven’t had this much fun since I had my sinuses packed with 40 miles of gauze after polyp surgery.

It’s not just men – my sisters, you disappoint me – but it’s particularly entertaining when the reprimands come from young white men who were still braying for their blankies when I started getting paid to give my opinion. They popped out special, I guess.

I became a columnist in the fall of 2002. Immediately, I found myself on the receiving end of right-wing vitriol so vile it made “The Sopranos” cuddly by comparison. My first death threats came within weeks, after I wrote that the Confederate flag should be retired.

After I supported stronger gun control measures, an NRA zealot posted on a gun blog what he thought was my home address and identified me as “unarmed.” I was a single mother at the time. I bought new locks and kept writing.

But by all means, do tell me what I don’t understand about being a progressive.

First, however, let me tell you what you clearly don’t understand about me – I almost added, “and women like me,” but that would be presuming to speak for other women, which would make me sound just like you.

MEET EVAN FROEHLICH DAILY CHRONICLE

F

ebruary is National Career and Technical Education Month and Kishwaukee College is celebrating by spotlighting students who are enrolled in CTE Programs, like Evan Froehlich.

He is in the Emergency Medical Services program, training to be a paramedic.

Froehlich graduated from DeKalb High School in 2014 and came to Kishwaukee College specifically because of the EMS Program.

“I have wanted to be a firefighter since I was very little. My father was a firefighter paramedic with the DeKalb Fire Department and I always knew I wanted to follow in his footsteps,” he said in a news release. “I took the KEC (Kishwaukee Education Consortium) class during high school and found that I really enjoyed fire science and EMS was the next logical step for me.”

Froehlich already completed his Basic Operations Fire Fighter Certificate through the Romeoville Fire Academy while completing his general education coursework for the EMS program. He will complete the paramedic training at Kishwaukee College in August. Currently, he is doing ride-time with the DeKalb Fire Department as well as completing his clinical experience at the Kishwaukee Hospital Emergency Room.

“This semester, I ride with DeKalb Fire anywhere from 18 to 24 hours a week and spend about seven

hours a week in the ER. The paramedic program here is unique because it is one of the few programs in the area to have you do clinical and ride time all throughout the three semesters of class,” he said in the release. “This provides you with great experiences because you get to learn about something one day and do it in the field the next. The program prepares you very well to perform your skills in the field.”

Froehlich’s instructors – Steven Ernest and Deb Baert – have high praise for his dedication as a student.

“He is always well prepared for class and truly seems to care about his patients,” Ernest said in the

release. “He seems to have a good solid set of values that are very necessary for being a good paramedic.

He only has one and a half years as an EMT, but performs above the level you would expect.”

As 2016 moves forward, Froehlich plans to complete his coursework and find work in his chosen field as a paramedic.

“I will be testing for full-time fire departments in hopes of getting hired as a firefighter paramedic,” Froehlich said in the release.

2016 inductees announced for Sycamore Music Hall of Fame DAILY CHRONICLE

He has performed more than 1,300 Christian piano concerts in churches all across the U.S., including three appearances at the Crystal Cathedral. Since 1998, he has been a professor of music at Chicago State University.

Marilyn Montzka, Advocate Award recipient, became involved in the Sycamore school district when she moved here in 1973 with her husband, Art. As a youth, she played several instruments including the piano, flute, cornet, French horn and viola, but ultimately stayed with the piano and viola as her primary instruments. She graduated from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music with a bachelor’s degree in music education where she was introduced to the Suzuki method.

Montzka advocated for Sycamore High School to have a full-time orchestra teacher. She also was heavily involved in the Sycamore Music Boosters and started the private lessons program in the district. She spent many years helping with this program, accompanying students, judging auditions, and tending to the organizational aspects of the program. Montzka was the director of the Suzuki Piano Program for NIU’s Community School of the Arts for many years, and taught at several Suzuki Institutes in the United States.

She is a musician in the Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra and continues to be a church musician as vocalist and director of a handbell choir.

St. John’s Lutheran Church, 126 E. South St., Creston, will celebrate Shrove Tuesday with a Mardi Gras-style dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. Feb. 9.

The meal will include jambalaya, red beans and rice, pralines and other New Orleans specialties.

Entertainment will be provided by Dysfunctional Brass. The members of the group began playing together in 2012 when asked to participate in various programs at church. In 2014, the members decided to become more intentional in their playing, and what began as a church ensemble evolved into The Dysfunctional Brass.

Members come from a diverse background and span five decades in age. While they enjoy playing many genres of music, their roots are in the church and much of their music reflects that. Performances include Dixieland, patriotic, classical, jazz, pops, show tunes and march music.

The 2016 Sycamore High School Music Hall of Fame inductees are Bob Abel, Dan Andree, Jim Hendricks and Marilyn Montzka.

In its fourth year, the Sycamore Music Boosters will host an official ceremony to induct the honorees at 2:30 p.m. Feb. 13, in the Sycamore High School Auditorium. The brief afternoon program will include a formal introduction of each inductee and may include musical performances and short tribute speeches.

The Sycamore High School AllState musicians also will be recognized during this ceremony. The updated 2016 trophy case across the hall from the auditorium will be unveiled and the program will conclude with a light reception. The public is invited.

Bob Abel, Advocate Award recipient, began teaching in the Sycamore School District in 1973 as a part-time vocal teacher, and was hired full-time the following year as the high school choral director. That same year, he introduced “Madrigal” music into the curriculum and started the Madrigal dinners. Abel continued to increase the choral curriculum by starting a swing choir, festival tours and recording albums with his choirs. During his tenure, he directed or co-directed 31 musical productions at the middle school and also initiated a guitar/piano curriculum there.

During his many years in the district, Abel was a staunch advocate for the Sycamore music, theater and arts programs, and he was an active volunteer for the Sycamore Music Boosters. He also was involved with the DeKalb Municipal Band, served as a choral director at several churches, and directed productions with the Children’s Community Theatre and Stage Coach Players. Abel retired from the Sycamore School District in 2014.

Dan Andree, Legacy Award recip-

ient, is a 2005 Sycamore High School graduate. He played violin in the orchestra throughout high school and was selected for ILMEA All-District Orchestra and All-State Orchestra.

He also was an active vocal musician during high school participating in concert choir, madrigals and jazz choir, was selected for ILMEA All-District Jazz Choir his senior year, and had roles in the musicals.

Andree attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he earned a bachelor’s degree in ethnomusicology. There, he made friends with peers, some of which were bluegrass players, which led him to start a profession in bluegrass music joining the internationally touring group, the Henhouse Prowlers. Touring extensively throughout the United States and Europe, then they began a string of tours with the U.S. State Department.

James Hendricks, Legacy Award recipient, graduated from Sycamore High School in 1991 as the valedictorian of his class. He was involved in music throughout his education in the Sycamore school district beginning piano at age 6. Throughout high school, Hendricks played the alto saxophone as a member of the concert band, marching and pep bands. He was a pianist in the jazz ensemble and jazz combos, and played in the orchestra. He was selected for ILMEA District jazz ensembles, named the No. 1 jazz pianist in the district, as well as being selected as the “top seat” in the All-State Jazz Band and AllState Honors Jazz Combo.

Hendricks earned his bachelor’s degree from Northern Illinois in piano performance with a jazz emphasis, then earned his Master of Music in piano performance and pedagogy from NIU. He has performed with a variety of jazz groups such as the Glenn Miller Orchestra, the All-American Orchestra, the Carnival Cruise lines

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church invites the community to its traditional Ash Wednesday services with Holy Communion and Imposition of Ashes at 8 a.m. (spoken service) and 6 p.m. (sung service). A potluck supper at 7 p.m. will follow the evening service.

Ash Wednesday is the beginning of the Christian season of Lent: a 40-day period marked by fasting and prayer to prepare the faithful to receive the joy of Easter.

Ashes on the Go will be available by request from the Rev. Stacy Walker-Frontjes at the parish office from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The sanctuary also will be open for quiet individual devotions and spiritual reflection. This is the sixth year that St. Paul’s has offered Ashes on the Go for those Christians who may not be able attend a service on Ash Wednesday.

ecarifio@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Parker Stratton had high hopes entering the season that he would earn a trip to the IHSA State Wrestling Championships for the first time in his prep career.

A broken thumb a couple of months ago nearly derailed that. But on Thursday, the DeKalb wrestler – who has been out of his cast for about two weeks – found out he will compete Saturday as the Barbs play host to a Class 3A regional.

“I’ve got a big fire lit under me, so I’m ready to go,” Stratton said. “I’m healthy, I’ve been working my butt off and I’m ready to go. I want to qualify at state and place.”

Stratton will be part of a big contingent of DeKalb senior wrestlers looking to finish in the top three to earn a spot in the Feb. 13 Barrington Sectional.

“We’ve been relying on our consistent guys – Ulises (Jacobo), Brenden McGee, Caleb Park, Leif (Williams),” DeKalb coach Mike Pater said. “Those guys are our seniors, our leaders, and we always rely on those guys and we’ll be doing that one more time Saturday.”

Pater said one of the goals from the start of the season has been a regional title, and the berth in the team tournament that comes with it. He said it’s a tough regional, but one the Barbs are capable of winning.

“It’s going to be supercompetitive,” Pater said. “There’s a lot of really, really good teams in there, but I think we are one of them.”

Stratton will be on the mat for the Barbs for the first time in about two months. He still was part of the team, Pater said.

“He was at everything – every practice, all the meets,” Pater said. “He’s on the bus with the guys. This team has been his whole life ever since elementary school wrestling, kids club wrestling.

He’s always had a passion for it and it’s a huge part of his life. Just because he’s hurt doesn’t mean he’s going to abandon his teammates or anything like that.”

Stratton said that was a two-way street and the team and coaches have been supportive during the injury.

“They really helped me keep my spirits [up],” Stratton said. “Even if I wasn’t wrestling, I still felt like I was a big part

Pater said he expects a big postseason run out of Stratton.

“My confidence is always high on him,” Pater said. “I definitely believe in him. He’s had just a phenomenal career.

He has so much experience, we feel he’s going to be fresh right now.

“Taking a look at him at practice, he’s looked pretty good,” he said. “Obviously, we haven’t seen him in live competition, but he’s got 108 varsity wins.

A guy like that, I think it’s like riding a bike. Once he steps back out on that line, he’s going to be good to go.”

ecarifio@shawmedia.com Some Sycamore wrestlers are going to get a chance for revenge in a big way.

The Spartans will compete Saturday in the Class 2A Rochelle Regional, along with Kaneland, against a lot of familiar opponents – and the chance to record some key victories.

The top three wrestlers in each weight class advance to the Washington Sectional on Feb. 13. Sycamore coach Brian Davis said his team is ready to go.

“We’ve got a couple good senior leaders to follow, and look for a lot of young guys to step up,” Davis said. “I’d like to say we qualify all 13, because that’s what we’d like to get. And that’s always a possibility until the last whistle. But, realistically, we still expect to have a large group.”

The winner of the regional qualifies for the team state tournament as well, which begins in a couple of weeks.

Kaneland won its regional last year.

Davis said a few of his top wrestlers will face guys they’ve lost to this season but are capable of beating – namely Michael Beaudoin and Artimus Cunningham. Cunningham has had his hands full with Rochelle’s Alex Har-

The Sycamore girls bowling team wrapped up a conference title with the win at the NI Big 12 tourney Thursday in LaSalle-Peru, rolling a 6,371 and surging from an 80pin deficit to Yorkville in the final game.

Alexis Spartans coach Kohlberg Andy Hampton said he thought Thursday was a good sign.

“We knew Yorkville could bowl extremely well, and if we were going to feel pressure, it would have been then,” Hampton said. “But we did a really good job handling the adversity and not being intimidated. We’re not

“It’s always a thought, especially after you won it the year before and come back with a fairly solid group,” Orozco said. “But, last year, we had a lot of seniors, and this year we’re filing the lineup with a lot of freshmen. It’ll be tough, but if everybody does their job, it’s something we can accomplish.

At the end of the day, though, it’s something we’re not totally focused on, as we just want to get as many out of this weekend as possible.”

1,091 – including a 257 in the final game to help power the Spartans’ comeback – to take seventh. Kelsey Johnston (1,057, ninth) and Kelly Drake (1,027, 12th) finished the scoring for the Spartans.

DeKalb’s Reagan Harold rolled a 1,016 to earn 13th and a medal, which go to the top 14 spots. Taylor Mershon rolled a 915 and also should be a candidate to earn a spot in the sectional tournament. The top four teams and 10 individuals not on a qualifying team make the sectional, which is Feb. 13 in Dixon.

Kaneland rolled a 4,286 as a team at the conference tournament and was led by Anu Kadampelil’s 802 series.

Hampton said the Spartans have been focused on qualifying for Day 2 of the state tournament, which will be Feb. 19 and 20 in Rockford. The top six teams from each of the four sectionals make state, and then the top 12 teams from Day 1 make the second day of the finale.

“I told the girls that it’s a two-horse race,” Hampton said. “We feel like the toughest team is Freeport. We’ve bowled in the same tournament as them five times this year, and finished higher than them three times. That’s who we’re keeping our eyes on.”

In Class 1A, Genoa-Kingston is preparing for the Aurora Central Catholic Regional. Coach Chad Wilmarth said at least three of his wrestlers are guaranteed spots in the Princeton Sectional because of a couple under-populated brackets – Cody Ordlock at 113, Trace Fiddler at 120 and Joey McNulty at 138.

He said he expects Jake Schambach (152), Justin Mousser (220) and Brandon Magnum (195) to have big tournaments.

“Looking at it, I think we have a decent chance,” Wilmarth said.

“Not a lot of teams in our regional have a full lineup. ... If we get six to eight into the sectional, I’d be happy.”

At Somonauk, the Timberwolves beat Leland-Earlville in the semifinals of the Little Ten Conference tournament.

The Timberwolves will face Newark for the title at 8 p.m. today in Somonauk.

Rose raises game, his voice

Being more of a vocal leader coming easier for point guard

And not just in the box score.

Without question the numbers have been improved in the past month. The usually up-and-down Bulls point guard has found consistency in that department, finally understanding that “Attack-mode Derrick” is a way better player than “Jump-shot Derrick.”

No, the life that Rose seems most proud of is his maturation as not only a leader, but a vocal leader.

“Yeah, yeah, like even [Wednesday against the Kings] when [E’Twaun Moore] missed a couple shots or when he was penetrating and got called up in the air and didn’t know what to do, just talking to him a little bit more,” Rose said. “Just telling everybody to run down the floor. Taj (Gibson), just encouraging him, because he had a handful down there with ‘Boogie’ (DeMarcus Cousins). Just trying to talk a little bit more cause it’s coming. I wouldn’t say it’s all the way there, but that’s an area I’m trying to improve on.

“It’s starting to come easier. Talking before the games, talking in the huddle. Just giving the guys the keys to the game. Like [against the Kings], I said if we came out and jumped on them, it should be an easy game. We did that. We played from a lead the entire game, and I think that changed the way we played.”

It also might change the way his teammates look at Rose.

The days of that “humble kid from Englewood” played out years ago, about the same time Rose seemed more concerned about his brand rather than coming back from injury despite being cleared by team doctors.

This year’s version of the Bulls, however, has needed something more.

“A lot of people say that,” Rose said.

“For me it’s like, I really don’t know how to put it, but a lot of people want me to speak more, but it’s got to come to me in a natural way.”

OK, so he’s pacing himself, and that’s fine. Where he hasn’t been pacing himself is in attacking the rim.

After Rose averaged 13.3 points a game in November, and then went up to 15.3 in December, since Jan. 1, Rose has averaged 17.5 points a game, and improved his field goal percentage along the way.

And although his 21 points in the win over the Kings was much needed, the nine assists and six rebounds with Butler (left knee) sidelined were huge.

It not only ended a two-game losing streak, but the hope was it once again helped jump-start some sort of winning spark for this underachieving group.

“We could be playing five people in the park,’’ Rose said. “Any wins, period.

When you win, it takes care of a lot of things. You’re able to sleep more comfortably at night. You’re able to wake up more easy, go through shootaround

more easy. You don’t have that anxiety before the game starts because you want to get the win so bad.

“For me, I’m more comfortable.

[Wednesday] was going to be a good peaceful night.’’

Rose and the Bulls definitely needed one of those.

Butler update: Butler was listed as questionable for the Friday game against the Denver Nuggets, but the AllStar will be smart about the soreness in his left knee.

Especially because he already lost a bet with his trainer.

Butler made a friendly wager with his personal trainers that he would play in all 82 regular-season games, and that ended Wednesday night when a kneeon-knee collision from Monday was still acting up.

A source did say Butler felt better Thursday but was receiving heavy treatment on the knee and would test it in the morning shootaround.

“It’s disappointing, but I’ve got to think big picture,” Butler said. “I’ve got to take care of my body. My trainer was here and he was like, ‘Look, you’ve got to do what’s right for your body.’ So I talked to the coaches and we thought it was best that to sit this one out.”

Hawks eye division title, home ice Know standings can flip in a hurry

mlazerus@suntimes.com GLENDALE, Ariz. – If the Blackhawks and Los Angeles Kings have proved anything over the past four seasons, it’s that playoff seeding is a bit overrated. The Hawks have won the Stanley Cup as a first-place team and as a third-place team, and reached the conference final in 2014 as a third-place team. The Kings won the Stanley Cup in 2012 as a No. 8 seed, and then again in 2014 as No. 6 seed.

But despite early season concerns about the depth of the Central Division, with only two months left in the season, the Hawks are in no danger of missing the playoffs. In fact, the top three teams in the division – the Hawks, the Dallas Stars and the St. Louis Blues – have separated themselves from the rest of the division, with the Hawks entering Thursday’s action against the Arizona Coyotes a whopping 15 points ahead of fourth-place Colorado.

So the focus no longer is on making the playoffs. It’s on finishing as high as possible. And with four games left against Dallas – including one Saturday at American Airlines Center and another next Thursday at the United Center – a division title is very much up for grabs.

The Hawks defeated the Coyotes, 5-4, in overtime.

“You’d like to win the division,” Hawks coach Joel Quenneville said.

“That’d be a great accomplishment. But everything can change quickly, and I

That’ll have a lot [to do with] determining where you’re going to finish.”

It might mean a little more this year, too, given the glaring discrepancy in the Hawks’ record at home and on the road. They’re a league-best 21-5-1 at the United Center, but entered Thursday’s game at Arizona a pedestrian 1311-3 on the road.

“I don’t think we’re focused on any of that kind of stuff,” defenseman Brent Seabrook said. “We’re focused on playing our game, and if we play well, we’ll get the best position we can.

We’re not looking at seeding or anything like that.”

Although Seabrook insists he rarely, if ever, checks the standings, plenty of the players do. Coming out of the Christmas break, the Hawks were 13 points behind Dallas. Then the Hawks

reeled off 12 straight wins while almost every other team in the division faltered. So even though there are only 27 games left in the season, the Hawks know how quickly everything can change.

“In the long run, good teams are going to go through that,” Jonathan Toews said of the Hawks’ sputtering rivals. “I don’t think there’s any moment we can feel too confident about our position in the standings.”

Q: ‘We’re all responsible’ for concussion protocol

mlazerus@suntimes.com GLENDALE, Ariz. – In its video detailing a 20-game suspension for Calgary’s Dennis Wideman for his crosscheck of linesman Don Henderson, the NHL acknowledged Wideman had suffered a concussion on a hit moments earlier. The league’s concussion spotter flagged Wideman to be sent to the so-called “quiet room” as part of the concussion protocol, but Wideman refused to leave the game.

Asked if such a decision should be tak-

en out of the players and coaches’ hands entirely, Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville demurred, saying that since the new protocol was bolstered this season with league-employed spotters at each arena, that there are “layers that need to be passed before you can Joel get another shift.”

Quenneville “There’s a spotter, you have your trainers, and we have a doctor everywhere we’re at,” Quenneville said. “And we have coaches, and

we have players. We’re all responsible for the awareness, and take responsibility as much as [we] can.”

The NHL is being sued by more than 100 former players claiming the league was negligent in its handling of concussions, and in educating players about the risks head injuries pose.

Eight is enough: Michal Rozsival returned to the lineup Thursday after missing Tuesday’s game with a lower-body injury. Both Rob Scuderi and Viktor Svedberg were scratched.

Quenneville still is unsure how long he’ll carry eight defensemen.

“We’re only looking at it tonight right now,” he said before the game.

On the rise: It’s becoming commonplace for reporters outside of Chicago to ask about goalie Corey Crawford, as his profile continues to rise and he enters the Vezina Trophy discussion with his strong play over the past two months. Asked by an Arizona reporter if this was Crawford’s best season, Quenneville agreed. Sort of.

“I don’t think he’s had any bad seasons since I’ve been here, and I think that he’s only getting better,” Quenneville said.

Ron Rivera’s résumé includes nine years as a linebacker with the Bears from 1984 to ’92, two stints as a Bears assistant coach from 1997 to ’98 and 2004 to ’06, five years as an Eagles assistant from 1999 to ’03, four years from 2007 to ’10 as a Chargers assistant and now the past five seasons as the head coach of the NFC champion Carolina Panthers.

In that four-year gap from 1993 to ’96, Ron Rivera Rivera spent the first three years as a broadcaster and one of my broadcast partners and friends as we worked together on the pre- and postgame shows for Bears games on the radio.

In 1996, he joined Dave Wannstedt’s staff as an unpaid intern to get a feel for what the coaching business might be like.

The rest, as they say, is history.

One thing you absolutely should know about Rivera is that before he was a great coach, he was a great family man and husband first.

He spoke the other day about what it’s meant to have his wife, Stephanie, on his journey with him.

“Stephanie has been a coach collegiately and professionally,” he said. “She has a little bit of a background. She understands it.

“One of the things she’s been really good about is she knows when I come home, there are certain things I have to get off my chest. She’ll pull it out of me.

We’ll talk about those things.

She’s been very supportive.

“I think it’s probably the most important thing that she’s been there.”

At the bridge table, we love majors and dislike minors up to the game-level, because in a major we have to win one fewer trick to get the game bonus.

However, when climbing up to a slam, minors are fine because we need 12 or 13 tricks whatever the strain.

When you have game values but do not find a major-suit fit, you steer toward three no-trump. Only if you are sure that contract cannot make, do you – kicking and screaming – play in five of a minor.

So, at a low level, we try to find a major-suit fit. Look at the South hand in today’s diagram. After opening one diamond and hearing partner respond one heart, South must rebid one spade, not two diamonds. If partner does not raise spades, South can show his long diamond suit on the next round. Here, of course, North raises to two spades (promising four-card support), and South jumps to four spades – when you smell a game, bid that game.

The defenders start with three rounds of clubs. After ruffing, how should declarer continue?

South must get his diamond suit established, and the heart king is a red herring. Declarer should draw two rounds of trumps, cash the diamond ace-king, ruff a diamond on the board, play a heart to his ace and lead out winning diamonds. He loses only two clubs and one trump.

cancers that are found by screening tests (usually mammograms). Under the microscope, the cancerous cells of DCIS have a similar appearance to the cells of breast cancers that are invading the breast. Even though DCIS is not invading the breast, it looks as if it might do so in the future.

About 50,000 to 60,000 DCIS lesions are removed each year in the United States. Yet the number of cases of invasive breast cancer has not gone down. That seems to mean in most women who have the DCIS surgically removed, it never would have invaded the breast or spread. But in a few, it would have.

The problem is, we haven’t yet figured out a way to identify the relatively few DCIS tumors that will invade and spread from the larger number that won’t.

You and your doctor are going to have to consider your individual risk factors. If your doctor thinks not having surgery, just closely monitoring the DCIS, is an option, you would need to decide if you are comfortable with that plan.

Some men face a similar dilemma. Some prostate cancers never spread. There are pretty good, but not perfect, ways of identifying those “indolent” cancers. Often, men and their doctors choose not to remove these cancers, but just to monitor them.

Fortunately, the majority of women with DCIS have an excellent prognosis. Their cancer does not spread.

Dear Dr. K: I have been diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ. My doctor wants me to have surgery. But recently I read about a study that said not all women with this type of breast cancer even need to be treated.

Can you help clear this up?

Dear Reader: Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is a type of breast cancer.

In DCIS, the cancerous cells are contained within the breast’s ducts (which carry milk to the nipple) but have not invaded surrounding tissue.

The standard treatment for DCIS is surgery. This might mean a mastectomy, which removes the entire breast and usually some nearby lymph nodes. Or it might be a lumpectomy, which removes only the cancerous tumor and a small amount of healthy tissue around it. Surgery might be followed with radiation therapy, designed to kill any possible remaining cancer cells in that breast.

But a recent study suggests standard treatment might be too aggressive.

The researchers studied more than 108,000 women with DCIS. The main finding of the study was the chance of premature death in women of all ages who had DCIS was no greater than in women without DCIS. However, the chance of death from breast cancer was higher in women younger than 35 and in African-American women who had DCIS. Some media coverage of this study left the impression DCIS doesn’t need to be treated. In fact, all patients in the study received some form of treatment. What the study does say is none of the treatments differed very much from one another with respect to ultimate survival.

DEAR ABBY Jeanne Phillips was a gentleman. He helped me into the car, etc. He also taught me how to dance, and we had a great time. He walked me to my front door at midnight.

Dear Abby: My husband passed away recently, and I have some items of his I’m unsure how to tastefully display to honor his memory. They are his Bible, a U.S. flag in a triangular display box (he was a military veteran), a set of deer antlers, works he authored, his guitar and family photos. I don’t want to build a shrine, but I don’t want to stick these things in a closet, either.

He was passionate about his pursuits, and his passion was contagious. I want to pay tribute to him without making others uncomfortable. I have a small house, so a grouping of the items takes up significant space. The way I have them set up now is kind of shrine-like, and it’s emotionally wrenching both for me and for visiting family. DEPOSIT REQUIRED: Bidders may secure up to two (2) sets of bidding documents by submitting a non-refundable check for $50.00 per set, or $60.00 per set if documents are to be mailed.

BID FORM: Bids shall be submitted in duplicate on forms issued by Architect.

BID SECURITY: Bids shall be accompanied by a Bid Security of at least 10% of the total amount of the base bid and all additive alternate bids.

This may be in the form of a certified check, cashier's check, bank draft or bid bond, payable to the Owner as a guarantee that should the bidder be awarded the Work, the bidder will enter into a contract with the Owner and will furnish the proper performance and payment bond within the time limit set by the Owner. Bid securities will be returned to all other bidders when the successful bidder files a proper performance and payment bond and the contract is executed by the Owner. If the successful bidder fails to file such contract and performance and payment bond, the amount of his bid security shall be forfeited to the Owner as liquidated damages.

WAGE RULES: Each craft, type of worker and mechanic needed to execute the Contract shall be paid the prevailing wage rate for the locality in which the work is performed, in accordance with all federal laws and laws of the State as well as local ordinances and regulations applicable to the work hereunder and having force of law.

PERFORMANCE BOND: A performance and payment bond for the full amount of the Contract will be required of the successful bidder. All costs associated with the bond shall be included in the bid amount.

RIGHTS RESERVED BY OWNER: The Owner reserves the right to waive any irregularities and/or reject any or all bids when, in the opinion of the Owner, such action will serve the best interests of the Owner.

WITHDRAWAL OF BIDS: No bid may be withdrawn for a period of 60 days after the opening of bids without written consent of the Owner.
