Be informed before voting – whenever you do Perhaps you’ve heard that we have an election coming up around these parts?

It’s true. The day for the primary election is March 15, but today marks the start of early voting in DeKalb County, where you can go to one of five polling sites around the county and cast a ballot. You can read all about it in Katie Smith’s story in today’s report.

Before early voting, we had early, early voting, which began so early that it actually started before they had ballots printed.

How’s that for progressive?

This isn’t going to be a column about Donald Trump, although statistics show that just by including his name more people might read this. He’s like a Republican Kardashian.

But the presidential candidates aside, there are other candidates, including for U.S. Senate, vying for the nominations of their respective parties.

Locally, the only primary race outside of Sandwich generating any heat is the three-way race for the GOP nod for state’s attorney.

Tracking devices reveal wildlife secrets

The Associated Press BOISE, Idaho – Solar-powered trackers on wings have recorded California condors soaring to 15,000 feet, while locators attached to humpback whales have revealed 1,000-foot dives to underwater mountains.

And GPS collars on Yellowstone grizzly bears are giving new insights into one of the most studied large carnivore populations in the world.

Technological advances in recent years have allowed what could be the most inquisitive Earth dweller of them all, humans, to invent ever more ingenious tracking devices to find out what their fellow inhabitants are up to.

“It’s a large field that’s developing very fast,” said Alex Zerbini, a research biologist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Marine Mammal Laboratory in Seattle. “There are many types of tags being developed for many species of marine animals.”

Scientists say the trove of information thanks to ever smaller, tougher and more powerful tracking devices is leading to discoveries that could be used to make better wildlife and habitat management decisions.

The devices also are revealing the secret lives of hard-to-study animals.

For example, Zerbini said, scientists recently discovered humpback whales diving to underwater mountains on a regular basis, and also making the dives during migrations.

In Yellowstone National Park and the surrounding area, more sophisticated tracking devices on grizzly bears are providing information, notably on their ability to find food, that could be a factor in whether Endangered Species Act protections are lifted.

A recent study aimed at finding out if grizzlies are finding a replacement food source used more advanced GPS collars that could tell if a grizzly spending a long time in a specific area was guarding a dead carcass or napping.

“We were actually able to determine differences in the patterns between those types of activities,” said Frank van Manen, leader of the Interagency Grizzly Bear Study Team.

The results, he said, suggest grizzlies are relying more on carcasses and less on whitebark pine in the fall when the tree produces edible, high-calorie seeds just as the bears are trying to pack on weight before hibernation.

Art classes can be ‘therapeutic’ for adults

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Coloring isn’t just for kids anymore.

Adults around Sycamore are setting time aside to enjoy a glass of wine and paint with their friends.

Each month, the Sycamore Park District hosts Canvas and Cocktails, an adult painting class led by Allison Marola, a Sycamore Park District instructor and local artist.

“Pretty much everybody that comes in is surprised with what they’re capable of,” Marola said. “I like to encourage people to do their own thing if they want to – pick different colors than I’ve chosen or move things around on the canvas if they don’t like the position.”

Canvas and Cocktails, and classes like it, are designed for people of all skill levels.

The aim of the class is less about creating a masterpiece and more about slowing down, Marola said.

“Drawing is therapeutic, and they’re really pushing that. It makes sense,” Marola said. “For me, being an artist, I don’t really feel like I need to do that, because I feel like I’m already doing it daily. But for other people who haven’t taken classes and they don’t know what to do, it’s a good way to start.”

Although the classes seem to be gaining steam within the past year or two, Susan Edwards has been leading courses since opening her Sycamore shop, The Art Attack, 15 years ago, she said.

“It’s because you see all those new painting places opening up and this whole coloring in coloring books,” she said. “I’ve been doing that with adults for 15 years now. We called them doodling classes. It was like pulling teeth trying to get people to sign up for them.”

Now, people call Edwards with their fingers crossed that she offers coloring book sessions and adult-oriented art classes.

“I’m just extremely excited that people are trying to get more creative nowadays ...,” Edwards said. “As far as coloring goes, I believe it’s really relaxing for people, and they realize that it is really relaxing.

“The painting, that is kind of a fun group activity. A lot of times, you don’t actually do the class for what

Edwards, who would host only one class every few months, now gets requests to lead two or three a week.

Classes at The Art Attack, 215 W. Elm St., do not provide alcohol and are open to people of all ages.

“I want anybody off the street to be able to do it. I don’t expect anybody to be Rembrandt,” Edwards said. “If they are excited about it, then maybe they can come and take a six-week class.”

Marola’s classes cater to their audience, since she tends to see regulars, such as Sue Wiley.

“I’ve improved. It’s still at like a fifth-grade level, but that’s better than a first-grade level. I just enjoy it,” Wiley said. “For me, it is [meditative].

It’s very therapeutic.”

ksmith@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Starting today, residents can cast early votes at five locations throughout the county, including the DeKalb Township building.

Voting equipment was delivered Friday to the DeKalb County Legislative Center, 200 N. Main St., Sycamore; DeKalb Township Building, 2323 S. Fourth St., DeKalb; Northern Illinois University Holmes Student Center, Kirkland Village Hall, 511 W.

Main St., Kirkland; and the Sandwich Fire Station, 310 E. Railroad St., Sandwich.

Early voting at each of the sites will be open until March 6, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday; 9 a.m. to noon Saturday; and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

From March 7 to March 13, polls will be open at the same locations from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

“There should be a time frame

somewhere in there even if you’re a working person or something else,” DeKalb County Clerk and Recorder Doug Johnson said.

Certified ballots for early voters arrived Feb. 11; but until now, early voting could be done only at the DeKalb County Administration Building, 110 E. Sycamore St., Sycamore.

DeKalb County cast 12,534 ballots in the last presidential primary election, reaching a 23 percent turnout rate, county records show.

Given the new location’s conve-

nience, Johnson expects about 500 early voters to stop by the township building alone, he said; 200 people in DeKalb County had cast early votes as of Saturday afternoon.

“Anybody that isn’t registered, we provide the ability to register and vote right there at the early voting center,” Johnson said.

Each of the six sites is open to all DeKalb County residents, and voters do not need to provide proof of address, unless they are planning to register at the voting site.

DeKalb County home sales, inventory plunge in January DAILY CHRONICLE

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – Homes sales plunged 30 percent last month as the inventory of properties on the market in DeKalb County declined sharply and prices increased, according to figures released this past week by the Illinois Association of Realtors.

Existing home sales in DeKalb County declined to 49 in January, down from 70 during the same month in 2015.

The median sales prices for homes in the county increased 10.3 percent last month to $152,500, up from $138,250 in January 2015. The number of homes on the market dropped from 456 in January 2015 to 362 last month, a 20.6 percent decline. The report notes that activity for one month can appear extreme because of a small sample size.

DeKalb County homes also sold at a faster pace in January. The time it took to sell a home in January averaged 86 days last month, down 18.9 percent from 106 days in January 2015.

Statewide, home sales increased 3 percent to 8,247 homes sold in January.

And the median price for Illinois was up 9.3 percent last month to $164,000, compared with $150,000 in January 2015.

year-over-year increases for the last 41 months, the Illinois Association of Realtors reported.

“The year appears to be getting off to a strong start, in no small part due to a mild winter,” IAR President Mike Drews said in a statement. “Sellers are getting very good overall prices due to diminished inventories. The strong consumer demand which was evident throughout 2015 seems to be holding firm as we start off 2016.”

Sales of existing homes rose 0.4 percent last month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.47 million, according to the National Association of Realtors.

Those gains build on a strong 2015.

Sales last year reached a nine-year peak, evidence of healthy demand that has led some economists to predict that the real estate sector will keep improving. But the report also shows a shortage of available homes.

The number of home listings in January fell 2.2 percent from a year ago. The result is that those shopping for homes have fewer options and must pay elevated prices. The median home sales price was $213,800 in January, an 8.2 percent annual increase from a year ago.

OBITUARIES Police: Man hit in face with pistol How to submit DAILY CHRONICLE

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – DeKalb police are investigating an armed robbery reported Friday night in which a man was hit in the face with a pistol and his cellphone was stolen.

The incident reportedly occurred about 10:04 p.m. in the 1200 block of Blackhawk Road, according to a safety bulletin issued by the Northern Illinois Police Department.

Police said the man was approached by two people. One of them hit the man with the gun, and both suspects fled in a dark-colored Nissan.

The victim sustained a cut on his face.

The person with the gun is described as a dark-skinned male, wearing a baseball cap, a hoodie and gray-colored sweatpants, according to police. DeKalb police said there was no description available of the alleged second suspect.

NIU alum among notables, trailblazers

Cornelius to be first African-American head of state bar association

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – This summer, a Northern Illinois University alum will become the first African-American head of the state bar association, adding to the number of NIU alumni whose accomplishments will be recorded as part of black history.

On June 17, attorney Vincent Cornelius will take the helm of the 30,000-member Illinois State Bar Association.

Cornelius, a 1989 NIU College of Law graduate, points out that Vincent although he is the first Cornelius African-American to lead the organization, two others from the law school previously held the post.

“NIU gave me the opportunity of a lifetime: to finish law school with almost no student loan debt,” said Cornelius, who is principal at an eponymous law firm with offices in Will and DuPage counties. “It is hard to believe that nearly 27 years have passed since my

graduation.”

Cornelius will return to campus in May as the class of 2016 commencement speaker, he said.

February has been been nationally recognized as Black History Month since 1976. Before then, it was a weeklong celebration of African-American heritage, started by black historian Carter G. Woodson and others.

From Hollywood to courtrooms around the state, to community organizations and the state legislature, NIU alumni include a number of standouts who continue to make black history.

A few have landed coveted leadership roles in some of nation’s largest and most iconic corporations.

“They get rave reviews from people in the community,” said Derrick Smith, an NIU academic counselor in the Center for Black Studies.

As chairman of the Coca-Cola Africa Foundation and Coca-Cola executive vice president, NIU finance alum Alex Cummings is among a sparse group of black corporate executives. Accounting major Carol Crenshaw currently is chief financial officer and vice president

of finance with The Chicago Community Trust. Current NIU Trustee Wheeler Coleman is also senior vice president and chief information officer for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan.

There are African-American NIU alumni on benches in several courtrooms around the state.

Among them is Carmen Goodman, who in 2007 became Will County’s first African-American Robin Kelly female judge. She got her law degree from NIU in 1995. Federal Judge Sharon Coleman, who got her undergraduate degree from NIU in 1981, serves the northern district of Illinois. After earning her Toi law degree from NIU Hutchinson in 1985, Patricia Martin has become presiding judge of Cook County Circuit Court’s child protection division. Martin also is a member of President Barack Obama’s Commission

to Eliminate Child Abuse and Neglect Fatalities.

U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly, D-Ill., and state Sen. Toi Hutchinson, D-Olympia Fields, are among the black legislators who attended NIU. Kelly got her political science degree in 2004, and Hutchinson completed law school there in 2014.

African-American Huskies also have made big plays on the gridiron. Now a Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive end, Larry buccaneers.com English Jr. helped lead NIU to berths in the Larry Poinsettia and Inde- English Jr. pendence bowls. English, a 2008 liberal arts and sciences grad, also has started a foundation to mentor young athletes.

Actor Sherwin David “Wood” Harris landed roles in dozens of films and TV shows. The NIU theater alum’s bigscreen credits include “Creed” and “Remember the Titans.” He also was cast in the popular TV program “The Wire.”

Mom of slain teen says Alvarez used her without permission

CHICAGO – The mother of a slain Chicago teenager said Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez used her in a campaign commercial without permission.

Anjanette Albert told the Chicago Sun-Times she was watching TV recently and was shocked when she saw her tear-stained face flash across the screen. Albert is the mother of Derrion Albert, a 16-year-old honors student killed in a melee outside Fenger High School in 2009. Five teens were charged and convicted in the murder.

The commercial shows Alvarez running through a neighborhood with intermittent images of her with families of victims of violence. When contacted, the

Alvarez campaign admitted Albert had not been contacted and said the ad would be pulled immediately.

Alvarez is seeking a third term as state’s attorney.

Chicago church heavily damaged by fire to be rebuilt

CHICAGO – A historical Chicago church destroyed by a fire last year will be rebuilt.

The Archdiocese of Chicago said the Shrine of Christ the King Catholic Church will be rebuilt and ownership will be transferred from the archdiocese to the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest.

The archdiocese said the institute has received sufficient funding for repairs on the historical building, which was left heavily damaged by a fire in October.

The congregation has been using a temporary worship space at a neighboring Presbyterian church since the fire.

Principal files sex discrimination suit against district

HIGHLAND – A southern Illinois high school principal has filed a lawsuit claiming Highland Community Unit School District 5 has practiced sexual discrimination by unfairly paying her a smaller salary than less-qualified men.

The Belleville News Democrat reported that in the lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in East St. Louis, Karen Gauen alleges the Highland school board paid her predecessor a base salary of at least $25,000 a year more than it paid her to do the same job.

She contends the man got the salary even though he had 17 fewer years of experience as an educator and lacked Gauen’s qualifications.

In addition, the lawsuit alleges Highland paid Gauen less as the high school principal than it pays men who hold lower-level and less-responsible jobs, including assistant principal.

5 taken to hospitals after falling ill at nursing home

CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Public Health is investigating after five residents of a Chicago nursing home fell ill and were taken to hospitals for treatment.

The incident occurred Saturday afternoon at the Continental Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on Chicago’s northwest side.

A nursing home spokesman said it wasn’t immediately clear what caused the residents to get sick, but they apparently all suffered from similar symptoms.

Continental Nursing, which has 172 residents, treats patients for a number of issues ranging from rehab and physical therapy to dialysis and hospice.

Family makes it through snowstorm for child’s transplant

CHICAGO – The parents of a Memphis 2-year-old said they now can think about their daughter’s future after she underwent a liver transplant that, at one point, was threatened by a snowstorm.

After a year waiting for a liver, Jesse and Nicholas Faris got the call Wednesday that one was available in Chicago.

The Faris family, who adopted Brooklyn from China last year, didn’t know how hard it would be to find a flight.

Jessie Faris told the Chicago Tribune that although the storm was mostly outside Chicago, flights to the city were canceled.

The Faris family finally was able to get a flight on a FedEx plane from Memphis to Chicago.

Jesse Faris said the flight was able to get the family to Lurie Children’s Hospital before a Thursday deadline.

In an upset, ‘Spotlight’ wins best picture at Oscars

The Associated Press LOS ANGELES – In an underdog win for a movie about an underdog profession, the newspaper drama “Spotlight” took best picture at the 88th Academy Awards on Sunday, where remarks on lack of diversity in Hollywood dominated the proceedings.

Tom McCarthy’s film about the Boston Globe’s investigative reporting on sexual abuse by Roman Catholic priests won over the favored frontier epic “The Revenant.” The well-crafted procedural, led by a strong ensemble cast, had lagged in the lead-up to the Oscars, losing ground to the flashier filmmaking of Alejandro Inarritu’s film.

But “Spotlight” – an ode to the hard-nose, methodical work of a journalism increasingly seldom practiced – took the night’s top honor despite winning only one other Oscar, for McCarthy and Josh Singer’s screenplay. Such a sparsely awarded best picture winner hasn’t happened

since 1952’s “The Greatest Show On Earth.”

After four previous misses, Leonardo DiCaprio won his first Oscar for his grunting, gruff performance in “The Revenant.” Best actress went to Brie Larson, the 26-year-old breakout of the mother-son captive drama “Room.”

“Climate change is real,” said DiCaprio. “It is happening right now. It is the most urgent threat facing our entire species. ... Let us not take our planet for granted. I do not take tonight for granted.”

Alejandro Inarritu took best director for a second straight year, a feat matched by only two other filmmakers: John Ford and Joseph L. Mankiewicz. His brutal frontier epic “The Revenant,” which came in with a leading 12 nods and the favorite for best picture, also won best cinematography for Emmanuel Lubezki. Renowned for his use of natural light in lengthy, balletic shots, Lubezki became the first cinematographer to win three times in a row (following wins for “Gravity” and “Birdman”),

and only the seventh to threepeat in Oscar history.

The night belonged to host Chris Rock, whose much-anticipated opening monologue left few disappointed. He confronted head-on the uproar over the lack of diversity in this year’s nominees, and returned to the topic throughout the show. (“We’re black,” he said after a commercial break.)

“Is Hollywood racist?

Hollywood’s opportunity imbalance often overshadowed the actual awards — though “Mad Max: Fury Road” did its best to command the spotlight.

U.S. is at the moment of truth The unthinkable is starting to look like the inevitable: Absent an extraordinary effort from people who understand the menace he represents, Donald Trump is likely to be the presidential nominee of the Republican Party.

At this stage, even an extraordinary effort might fall short. But history will not look kindly on GOP leaders who fail to do everything in their power to prevent a bullying demagogue from becoming their standard-bearer.

A few days ago, we criticized Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus for his assertion that a Trump victory in November would silence the doubters.

We argued winning would not erase the bigotry and ugliness of Trump’s campaign, nor remove the dangers of a Trump presidency. On Wednesday, the GOP chairman, perhaps wanting to show he can match Trump in eloquence, responded: “That is the stupidest editorial that I have ever seen.”

So it falls to other leaders to decide if their party will stand for anything other than winning. A political party, after all, isn’t meant to be merely a collection of consultants, lobbyists and functionaries angling for jobs. It is supposed to have principles: In the Republican case, at least as we have always understood it, to include a commitment to efficient government, free markets and open debate.

Trump wants the United States to commit war crimes, including torture and the murder of innocent relatives of suspected terrorists. He admires Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and sees no difference between Putin’s victims and people killed in the defense of the United States.

He would round up and deport 11 million people, a forced movement on a scale not attempted since Stalin or perhaps Pol Pot. He has, during the course of his campaign, denigrated women, Jews, Muslims, Mexicans, people with disabilities and many more. He routinely trades in wild falsehoods and doubles down when his lies are exposed.

Some have spoken up over the course of Trump’s campaign, and then stepped back; others have been silent. The silence may reflect an absence of courage and also an element of calculation: There was an assumption that Trump would fade, and that confronting him would only make him stronger.

The calculations have proved wrong. If Trump is to be stopped, now is the time for leaders of conscience to say they will not and cannot support him and to do what they can to stop him. We understand Trump would seek to use this to his benefit, and he might succeed. But what is the choice? Is the Republican Party truly not going to resist its own debasement?

VIEWS Cynthia Tucker In the final year of his presidency, Obama has returned to the incendiary politics of Guantanamo, promising again to shutter the prison. He has less chance of success now than he did when he began eight years ago. Since then, congressional Republicans have grown more rabid in their opposition (to everything), the GOP electorate has sunk into a miasma of xenophobia, and the terrorists of the so-called Islamic State have risen up to haunt our nightmares.

Congress has passed laws making it virtually impossible to transfer Guantanamo detainees to prisons in the United States.

Still, Obama is right to bring the facility to the top of the national agenda. He has little leverage but his bully pulpit, little authority but the moral force of this righteous crusade. That’s a start.

From the beginning, the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay has represented the worst instincts of American leaders. In 2002, placing the first of nearly 800 terror suspects eventually held there, the Bush

administration argued they were not subject to the protections of the Geneva Convention.

While the U.S. Supreme Court later disagreed, forcing the Bush administration to reverse itself, that arrogant and shortsighted abrogation of international norms gave our enemies good reason to call us hypocrites.

And that was just the beginning of an appalling slide into a morass of human rights abuses: Some prisoners were tortured; some were held for years without formal charges; many were not, as the Bush administration initially claimed, captured on the battlefield, but rather turned over by Pakistanis and Afghans in exchange for money. Those men may never have raised arms against the United States or its allies.

Even the Bush administration eventually yielded to pressure and released or transferred more than 500 detainees.

Obama has continued to reduce the population; an estimated 91 detainees remain.

But the very existence of the facility – “Gitmo,” as it’s often called – remains a blight on our reputation, a pall over the shining city on a hill. “Keeping this facility open is contrary to our values,” Obama said

last Tuesday. “It undermines our standing in the world. It is viewed as a stain on our broader record of upholding the highest standards of (the) rule of law.”

He clearly means to use the last year of his tenure to keep pressure on Congress to close it, probably by speeding up the exodus of detainees.

(While a handful of former detainees have returned to the battlefield, the vast majority of them have not.) He believes he can persuade other countries to accept an additional 80 or so, leaving only a few hard-core cases, men who are deemed too dangerous to release.

However, the cost of keeping them at Guantanamo would be exorbitant, as much as $10 million per detainee per year, according to some estimates.

For a Congress that claims to be fiscally prudent, it ought to make a lot more sense to bring those men to a maximum-security prison in the United States, where they’d have no chance of escape.

That would keep us safe without destroying our ideals.

We can now declare the end of ‘Christian America’

Political elections are as much about those doing the electing as it is about those eventually elected. If each vote represents what a voter believes and hopes for, then the person elected is really a magnification of the desires voters happen to have.

This is why national elections are so fascinating. Every four years, Americans collectively paint and present to the world a picture that communicates their aspirations and fears. It is a picture that enables us to see the character of a nation.

When I first moved from Canada to the United States 30 years ago, I was told repeatedly America is a Christian nation. It isn’t simply that America has many self-professing Christians living within its borders.

The identity of America as a whole, its history and its destiny, are somehow tied to Christianity.

Political leaders feel the need

to appear Christian, say Christian-sounding things, show up at Christian institutions and end their speeches with “God bless America.”

American money proclaims, “In God we trust.” What could be more Christian than that?

The current election cycle is demonstrating (once again) the rhetoric and mythology of a uniquely Christian America should come to an end. Why? Because the votes don’t lie.

Although voters may speak piously and rather vaguely about Christian values and ideals, polls and election results communicate clearly this is a nation consumed by fear, anger and suspicion – none of which are Christian virtues.

If voters were serious about presenting to the world a picture of a Christian America, they would need to be painting with the colors of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, fidelity, gentleness and self-control; because these are the colors that, as the Apostle Paul said

(in Galatians 5), witness to Jesus Christ and the power of God at work in their lives.

Of course, Americans and their leaders will continue to speak in the name of God, even profess grand things about God, as they make their case for American Exceptionalism and the righteousness of the American Way. But from a scriptural point of view, it is all rubbish. What matters is not what you say but how you live.

And from a Christian point of view, nothing matters more than living a life that is inspired by God’s love for everyone.

How will America fare in this time of judgment, especially when we admit as evidence the millions of Americans (many of them children and the elderly) who do not have enough good food to eat, or the millions of Americans who have to drink water polluted with lead and industrial/ agricultural pollutants?

What about the refugees and immi-

grants who are being refused at our borders and made to feel unwelcome in our land, or the homeless (many of them ill) who do not have a home and proper protection from the elements, or the prison inmates (many of them African-American) who are treated like the garbage of society?

God is asking the nations about their public policy, not their verbal piety, because the true test of Christianity has only ever been the test of love.

But for that love to be genuinely Christian, and not a projection of our own fear, anxiety or arrogance, citizens are going to have to separate once and for all the false identification of American and Christian ideals. They may overlap from time to time, but they are not the same.

In his first presidential campaign, President Barack Obama pledged to close the infamous U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where torture has been practiced and due process flouted.

The reviled facility is a stain on our reputation as a beacon for human rights and as a role model in a world where the innate dignity of the individual is still not universally accepted.

With his pledge to shut it down, Obama was merely building on the stated desire of his predecessor, George W. Bush, who knew the facility was a source of embarrassment for our allies and a recruiting tool for our enemies.

Back then, Obama’s view was shared by his rival, GOP presidential nominee John McCain, who also pledged to close the prison.

But as president, Obama badly bungled the process, failing to make closing Guantanamo a priority and misjudging the inflammatory politics that are associated with the suspects who are held there. He was deserted not only by McCain, but also by Democrats who claimed – speciously – that bringing suspected terrorists into the continental United States was much too dangerous to consider.

Family Service Agency hosts Bowl for Kids’ Sake DAILY CHRONICLE Family Service Agency of DeKalb County invites the community to support Bowl for Kids’ Sake, the Big Brothers Big Sisters program’s largest annual fundraiser.

Nationally, the event raises more than $20 million and the goal for this year’s local Bowl for Kids’ Sake is $55,000. Funds raised allow Big Brothers Big Sisters to make more mentoring matches and provide ongoing support for mentors, mentees and families to help sustain long successful relationships.

Each match costs the agency approximately $1,000 annually, so this event will support several of the approximately 50 matches in DeKalb County. Additionally, funds allow for more outreach for recruitment for “Bigs” (volunteer mentors), as currently, there are nearly 40 children waiting to be matched with a mentor.

Bowlers collect pledges from their friends and family then will bowl with their team on one of the five nights of the event. Money raised from this event will go directly to supporting the one-to-one mentoring matches in the local community.

The event features a Wild West theme and is being held Thursday through Sunday at Mardi

DHS Band Going for the Green on Saturday

The DHS Music Department and the DeKalb Band Parents Organization will hold a special event on Saturday called Going for the Green. The evening will begin with a musical celebration at DHS from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. featuring entertainment, dinner, raffles and a silent auction. Several student ensembles are slated to perform including DHS a capella, jazz bands and more. An after-party at O’Leary’s Ale House featuring hors d’oeuvres, a DJ and a guaranteed-winner raffle follows from 9:30 to 11:30 p.m.

War story to be shared at Brown Bag DAILY CHRONICLE Robert Varty grew up in Sycamore, and joined the Army Air Corp in 1942. On April 2, 1944, his crew’s plane was shot down over Belgium. The rest of his story involves a series of events that could serve as a plot for a movie.

Robert Varty’s family was notified first that he was missing in action, and on Aug. 29, 1944,

they received official notification that he was killed in action. However, it turns out that Varty landed safely in Belgium and made contact with an underground resistance organization.

Erlenborn has been the keeper of these records for many years. She recently turned them over to the Sycamore History Museum to make sure they can be shared with researchers.

This talk is part of the Sycamore History Museum’s Brown Bag Lunch series, hosted on the first Thursday of the month. The program begins at noon at the DeKalb County Community Foundation. It is free and open to the public; donations are welcome.

STEM Café to explore math behind polls DAILY CHRONICLE At the next STEM Café, “Predicting the Primaries: How Math Shapes Presidential Elections,” professor of political science Matthew Streb will explore the nitty-gritty of election polls, discussing how they work, how they are analyzed, and how they can affect outcomes.

Every day brings news of yet another poll claiming to show which candidates are pulling ahead or falling behind. Streb’s research, which has been cited everywhere from The New York

Times to USA Today, provides insight into why different polls produce different results, making winners and losers difficult to predict.

“I want people to get an understanding of why it’s so difficult to poll presidential elections, especially the primaries,” Streb said in a news release. “That means talking about the statistics behind polling, factors like sampling size, margins of error, the weighting of data.”

Hein wins first state title in program history

jseverson@shawmedia.com EVANSTON – The pressure is finally off Daniel Hein’s shoulders.

It’s been replaced with a state championship.

Coming into the IHSA Boys Swimming and Diving State Championships finals as the odds-on favorite in the 100yard backstroke, Hein lived up to the billing and became the first member of the DeKalb-Sycamore co-op boys swim team to win a state championship by cruising to a victory on Saturday at Evanston Township.

“At the end of the backstroke race, it was relief when I touched the wall and got first,” said Hein, who finished with a time of 48.37 seconds – a tad slower than the state-record mark of 47.97 he had in the preliminary round on Friday. “That’s one thing that I’ve strived for in my four years of high school swimming, and to finally get it, it’s awesome.”

Hein also finished second in the 100 butterfly after being the runner-up in both the butterfly and the backstroke in 2015. Fellow senior Jake Bjork capped his career by taking sixth place in the 100 breaststroke, and both Bjork and Hein were on the sixth-place 200-medley relay team – along with junior Dylan Rasmussen and sophomore Riley Lohse.

The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Hein, Bjork, Lohse and Austin Bockman finished in 12th place (3:12.59) after coming into the state meet seeded 30th.

However, Hein came into both of his individual events as the top time after prelims on Friday.

In the 100 backstroke, his time was 47.97 – compared to the next closest racer, who was Tyler Sesvold (50.36). After finishing the race on Saturday, securing history for the co-op, Hein calmly walked over to his things nearby, not allowing his emotion to show.

“I just like to act like I’ve been here before,” Hein said. “I want to carry myself like I’m supposed to be getting first.

Obviously, I was the top seed so it was expected of me, so I like to carry myself to that high standard of calmness. Sure, I wanted to freak out. I had to calm myself down.”

However, the magnitude of being the first person in program history to win a state championship wasn’t lost on Hein.

“It’s awesome,” he said. “Realizing that – it’s probably going to hit me more hard tonight. I’ll be laying in my bed shaking and going, ‘This is so cool.’ To be the first one to do it is awesome. It brings a lot of attention to the program.

For the second year in a row, Hein was the state runner-up in the 100 butterfly – finishing behind Hinsdale Central’s Franco Reyes for the second consecutive season.

Hein, who plans to swim for Missouri next season, came into the race with the fastest seed time – 47.92 in the prelims – but finished in 48.15 on Saturday, behind Reyes’ 47.50.

“Coming in second to him is nothing new,” an upbeat Hein said after the race. “You get sucked into [having the top prelim time]. People see you’re the top seed, so the pressure’s on you. But I know talking with Franco yesterday, he was the state champion last year and he went faster than my prelim time [on Friday] so I knew he’d be much faster in the finals.”

Reyes won the 100 butterfly last season with a time of 47.72.

Bjork soared up the standings during the preliminary round for DeKalb-Sycamore, coming into the state meet seeded 18th but managing to get into the top six. He finished in sixth place during the finals on Saturday with a time of 57.77 after taking ninth last season.

“Time-wise, I had some adds from [Friday] but to come here with the guys ... I’m just so proud of all of us. It’s hard to put into words,” said Bjork, a senior from Sycamore who will swim for Washington University in St. Louis. Bjork had the unfortunate timing of having to race in the 100 breaststroke and then immediately having to swim as a part of the 400 freestyle relay.

For the 200 medley relay, Rasmussen and Lohse answered the call this season for DeKalb-Sycamore and were a part of the team’s record-breaking time this weekend.

The relay team – which also featured Hein and Bjork – finished in sixth

place (1:34.54) in the finals on Saturday, which came a day after it broke the school record in the event with a time of 1:33.84 in the prelims on Friday.

“First meet at state and you finish top six? In your first state meet ever? Incredible,” DeKalb coach Melanie Chambers said. “They held their own, that’s for sure.”

Lohse and Rasmussen had to fill the void left by the graduation of Dylan Powers and Michael Carlson last season. At the 2015 state meet, the co-op took fifth place with a time of 1:34.29.

“I did feel the pressure because we lost two great swimmers,” Lohse said.

Chambers said that at the crowded pool on Friday, Rasmussen and Lohse sat and simply observed the spectacle of it all.

“I felt the pressure [on Friday],” Rasmussen said. “I felt a lot of pressure working up to the state, but in the end, we got our team record.”

NORMAL – The ball flopped around on Josie Diehl’s hands as she attempted to corral a rebound and work her way upcourt.

She saw Indian Creek teammate Alexis VanWyhe all by herself ahead of the South Holland Seton Academy defense, but was still trying to get a handle on the ball.

Finally, the senior center was able to get control enough and push it up to VanWyhe, who made the open layup to give Indian Creek a four-point lead with 1:09 left in overtime against the Sting in the Class 1A state third-place game, securing the eventual 56-50 win for the Timberwolves.

“I think I got a pretty long rebound and just tried going with it,” Diehl said.

“I saw [VanWyhe] right away but I tried to control the ball before I got it to her.

She finished, so it was a good play.”

It was the second assist of the day for Diehl, who also finished second on Indian Creek (32-2) with both 14 points and 13 rebounds. But it was the assist that caused the most stress to coach Paul Muchmore.

“I was about to fall down,” Muchmore said. “I saw the ball bounce around her hand, but she made a nice pass.”

The Timberwolves were making their first trip to the state tournament, and lost their semifinal 34-31 to Moweaqua Central A&M, which in turn lost to Hardin Calhoun in the title game.

It was another first for Diehl, who became the first person in school history with 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in her career.

“We’re one of two teams to finish in the state with a win, so it’s awesome,” Diehl said. “We played really hard and it was just the icing on top of the cake.”

Muchmore said he was proud of his standout senior – who has been honored on at least one postseason all-state team so far.

“It’s great for her,” Muchmore said.

“They’ve all worked hard, but she’s really put in a lot of work since her freshman year to become the all around player she is.”

Diehl was also part of a key stretch for the Timberwolves. After Seton Academy (25-8) led most of the first half, the Timberwolves came out to take control of the game in the third. They were shooting 4 of 23 on 3-pointers through the first six quarters at the state tournament, but MaKayli Vann opened the third with a 3-pointer to give Indian Creek a 24-23 lead.

Indian Creek takes third in state

ecarifio@shawmedia.com NORMAL – Madison Russell went leaping through the air and came up with an acrobatic steal in the final 30 seconds with her Indian Creek girls basketball team trailing by two to Seton Academy in the Class 1A State Third-Place Game.

Three seconds later, MaKayli Vann scored on a jumper, the game was tied and headed to overtime as the Timberwolves never trailed again in their 56-50 win over the Sting on Saturday at Redbird Arena.

“I saw the pass coming and I went to go for it,” Russell said. “Luckily, I got there and got it to Alexis [VanWyhe] and MaKayli ended up with the basket.”

The teams traded 3-pointers to start the overtime – one by Vann, one by Danielle Bailey – but back-to-back buckets

by Vann and VanWyhe gave the Timberwolves (32-2) a four-point lead with 1:09 left in the extra frame. The Sting (258) cut it to 52-50 with 0:58 left, but didn’t score again.

Indian Creek was making its first trip to the state tournament, and Paul Muchmore – in his 20th year as coach of the Timberwolves – said it took him until the buzzer sounded to realize what his team accomplished.

“I started tearing up there at the end,” Muchmore said. “It’s been a long road for us, myself, Mr. [Chad] Crutcher. It’s been about 16 years together. Never in

Vann led the Timberwolves with 23 points and 15 rebounds, while Josie Diehl had 14 points and 13 rebounds as the duo helped power the Timberwolves to a 48-34 edge on the boards. VanWyhe finished with 12 for the Timberwolves.

Ren’cia Rolling scored 15 to lead the Sting and Danielle Bailey added 14 – but the two combined to shoot 8 of 35 as Seton Academy shot 27 percent for the game.

Indian Creek trailed most of the first half, but came out red hot in the third quarter, building the lead to as much as 36-23. With 2:22 left, Rolling gave Seton Academy – likely playing its final girls basketball game as the South Holland school is scheduled to close after the year

– its first lead since the early third with a pair of free throws.

Diehl tied the game at 43 with 1:27 left, but Bailey made two free throws to put the Sting up two with 0:44 left.

“It was so nice to see them come out and not hang their heads and play such a nice third quarter,” Muchmore said.

“That’s what we talked about halftime.

I told them you have 16 minutes go out, play the way we play and whatever happens, happens. And to be honest, I said the most important thing is to enjoy the experience.”

While Vann comes back next year for the Timberwolves – the other four starters are all seniors. Non-seniors played 46 minutes – 34 for Vann, 12 for MaKenzie Vann and less than a minute for Madison Twitty.

Muchmore said he hasn’t put much thought into the future, but hopes the experience of going to state helps the younger players.

“I’m going to enjoy this year and we’ll look forward to next year when it comes,” Muchmore said with a big laugh.

“It should be fun. It’s nice for the girls who got experience to sit on the bench. I think it will get them a little excited, maybe they will work on their game.”

For the seniors, the third-place finish was still a lot to process.

“I still feel like we’re not even here,” Russell said. “It’s also awesome to end with a win – not many teams get to do that.”

Men handle Broncos, women drop heartbreaker in OT

sports@daily-chronicle.com DEKALB – The Northern Illinois men’s basketball team looked to be well on their way to a sizable victory against Western Michigan.

That notion disappeared in the final 10 minutes of the second half, but the Huskies escaped with a 76-67 victory on Saturday afternoon at the NIU Convocation Center.

In the first game of the doubleheader at the Convocation Center, the NIU women came out on the losing end to a tough conference opponent, losing to Toledo 89-83 in overtime.

In the men’s game, Western Michigan (11-18 overall, 5-11 MAC West) couldn’t find an answer for Northern Illinois (19-10 overall, 8-8 MAC West) on either end of the floor for the better half of the game. The Huskies took a

38-19 lead into halftime and led by 26 in the second half. Northern Illinois junior guard Aaric Armstead had a teamhigh 18 points and sophomore center Marin Maric had 16.

“Obviously, it’s a great win for us, especially this time of year,” NIU assistant coach Jon Borovich said. “Last time we played Western Michigan we didn’t play well up at their place. We didn’t finish and close the game out the way we wanted to and it’s important to make our free throws and take care of the ball. There’s a lot to learn from today’s game.”

The Broncos went on a 16-2 run in

the final 10 minutes of the game and quickly brought the game back to single digits. With 58.9 seconds left in regulation, Western Michigan cut Northern Illinois’ lead to 70-61 after WMU guard Thomas Wilder made a pair of free throws. Western Michigan’s leading scorers were Wilder (17) and Tucker Haymond (12).

Time was on the Huskies’ side and it became the point in the game where the Broncos needed to start intentionally fouling to give themselves a chance to complete the comeback win.

The way the Huskies grinded out the win when the game became close with just a few minutes left showed something to Borovich.

“This shows the team can find ways to win when they have to,” Borovich said. “We had done such a good job in the first half of building such a big lead that it allowed us to be a little bit slop-

py. Obviously you don’t want to play that way and you want to win the game by 35 or 40 to get the subs in the game.

This team is a work in progress and we can always get better.”

In the women’s game, NIU (11-16 overall, 4-12 MAC West) struggled in the second half to defend against Toledo (16-11 overall, 11-5 MAC West) in the paint and the Rockets made them pay for it.

“I think if you look at the starting lineup, we’re starting small,” NIU coach Lisa Carlsen said. “I think teams are going to try to take advantage of that and do some things on the block. I think we adjusted pretty well and made it a little tougher on their big players in the second half, but that’s something we’re going to continue to see.”

The Huskies leading scorer was Ally Lehman, who had 18 points. Cassidy Glenn finished with 17 points.

Collins signed a letter of intent Saturday to compete colligiatley at Mount Mercy College during a pro-sponsored youth tournament at Mardis Gras lanes on Saturday.

“I chose Mount Mercy because [coach] Andy Diercks is one of the nicest guys you could ever meet,” Collins said. “They have bio-chemistry as a major and because the bowling program is so strong. I am looking forward to getting out there on my own, meeting new people and being outside of my comfort zone.”

It’s more than a college opportunity for Collins – the game gave him the opportunity to be coached by his father, Allen, at the high school level.

“My dad and I have both gone through some rough patches in my bowling career,” Ranzy Collins said. “Through that, my mental game has gotten stronger the past few years. Through all of that, I realized that what my dad was trying to tell me was to help me and that is what has made me better.”

“He calls me coach just like any other player on the team,” said the elder Collins. “He really adapted well to being a team player and not just a coach’s kid.”

Ranzy Collins first appeared on Diercks’ radar back when her was a freshman in 2012, at a tour event that coach Diercks and professional bowlers Diandra Asbaty and Jason Belmonte or-

ganized.

“One of the things that drew me to Ranzy was not only his talent but that he is a good kid,” Diercks said. “He always smiles, has a positive attitude and if he is having a bad game, he makes sure that no one in the alley would know it by looking at him. He is going to be a positive part of the culture that we are building at Mount Mercy.”

Diercks was the first tournament director for the Elite Youth Tour, the event which hit DeKalb on Saturday and Collins won, rolling an average of 215 for the 12 games. The tour has grown immensely in just a few short years and shows no signs of slowing down.

“We started the Elite Youth Tour to give young bowlers a chance earn scholarship money and to compete against higher competition in conditions that are more similar to the college game,” Dierks The lane conditions are more difficult than what you would find at your average house league.

This tour is also of the only 501(c)3 organizations where kids can bank their prize money for college tuition. The money earned can only be sent directly to an institution of higher learning. It gives the athletes incentive to go to college.”

Professional Bowler Diandra Asbaty is one of the co-creators of the tour, along with fellow professional Jason Belmonte, who is ranked No. 1 on the PBA tour. Asbaty beams with pride when she talks about the opportunity that the tour provides to young bowlers across the country.

“I’ve been ranked No. 1; I’ve won medals for Team USA. Those things can’t compare with what we do here,” Asbaty said. “Our sponsors are wonderful and were open to the idea of supporting this tour so we can give out not only things like new bowling balls and shirts, but scholarship money for these kids.”

New-look Hawks top NHL-leading Capitals

The Associated Press CHICAGO – For all the star power with the Washington Capitals and Blackhawks, it was a pretty connection between fourth-line forwards that proved to be the difference.

Richard Panik kicked the puck from behind the net to a streaking Dennis Rasmussen for the rookie’s fourth goal at 12:47 of the third, and the new-look Hawks topped the NHL-leading Capitals, 3-2, on Sunday.

“I thought it was a beautiful pass,” Hawks coach Joel Quenneville said with a grin, “one of best passes I’ve seen all year.”

Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane also scored as the Hawks (39-20-5) won for only the third time in their past eight games.

Corey Crawford made 28 saves, helping the Hawks leapfrog idle Dallas for the top spot in the Western Conference with 83 points.

The Hawks were coming off disappointing losses to Minnesota and Nashville, but the defending Stanley Cup champions got a boost from two of their newest players acquired in a flurry of moves last week.

Andrew Ladd got an assist in his return to the Hawks after he was reacquired in a trade with Winnipeg on Thursday night, and Tomas Fleischmann had a solid debut after he came over in a trade with Montreal on Friday.

“It was nice to be around familiar faces from the guys who were around when I was here before,” Ladd said. “There are a lot of things different – they’ve changed this

whole room around – and a lot of new faces, but just fun to be back.”

MarcusJohanssonandEvgenyKuznetsov scored for Washington (45-12-4), which had won five of six. Braden Holtby made 20 saves while dropping to 39-7-3 on the year.

“You can definitely see why their top players are their top players,” Capitals coach Barry Trotz said. “I thought today had a little bit of a playoff feel. It’s just another good experience for us.”

The nationally televised second meeting of the season between two of the NHL’s top teams – Washington beat the Hawks, 4-1, on Oct. 15 – was a highly entertaining affair played at a breakneck pace for much of the day in front of a season-high crowd of 22,218 at the United Center.

People with BDD are at increased risk for committing suicide as well as alcohol or drug problems. That’s because they have a high risk for also suffering from depression.

The first big step in treatment is helping your daughter recognize she has a problem.

There are several self-test questionnaires available online (just type “body dysmorphic disorder” into a search engine). I don’t know of any evidence that one is better than another. People with BDD won’t always be persuaded by the results of a self-test questionnaire, of course. However, sometimes such an objective test is more persuasive than a child’s parent.

Antidepressants like the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) fluoxetine (Prozac) can help. Other classes of drugs may treat symptoms that are common in the illness, such as delusions. Psychotherapy is helpful for milder symptoms -- in particular, a form of psychotherapy called cognitive behavioral therapy.

Above all, the goal is to help your daughter turn away from a preoccupation with her appearance and engage in treatment for underlying problems. It won’t be easy, but it may be the only way for her to achieve relief.

Dear Dr. K: The doctor says my 14-yearold daughter has something called “body dysmorphic disorder.” What is it, and can it be treated?

Dear Reader: I’ve had questions about this condition before and have consulted with my colleague Dr. Michael Miller, assistant professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Miller said that body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a condition that goes well beyond the concern about their appearance experienced by virtually all teenage girls.

Although BDD was first described in women (usually girls), it occurs also in men and boys. People who have this condition are preoccupied with what they regard as physical defects. In many cases, this concern becomes extreme and even delusional: They see bodily flaws that aren’t there.

They see themselves as puny even though they are muscle-bound from spending hours in the gym.

People with BDD often become fixated on checking their appearance and spend an inordinate amount of time grooming. They may focus on their appearance to the exclusion of everything else, including work or personal relationships.

BDD has characteristics in common with eating disorders, in which people also have a distorted image of their bodies. It also has similarities with obsessive-compulsive disorders, or OCD. Like people with these disorders, people with BDD feel fearful that some harm will come to them from the defect in their appearance. People with BDD spend more time than is reasonable trying to rid themselves of the thing they fear. The hours that people with BDD spend grooming are like the hours that people with OCD can spend cleaning themselves, when they have a fear of dirt and contamination.

Dear Abby: I don’t know what to do with my parents’ wedding album. My mother gave it to me as a gift when I was a teen, and I assume it was a coming-of-age consideration. I’m now in my 30s with a career that has me moving around frequently. I have moved once a year for at least the past five years, and I have had to pack up this album and box it every time.
