Weighing in on rumors, school safety POLL YESTERDAY’S RESULTS We were there, we didn’t see anything and not because we weren’t looking.

I’m referring to the assembly that Daily Chronicle reporter Brittany Keeperman and photo editor Danielle Guerra attended Wednesday at DeKalb High School to mark Black History Month.

The assembly actually was held three times; our reporters watched and took video highlights of the second performance and said they saw no signs of violence, no one yelling out racial epithets. Hence, our story didn’t mention any.

Some have suggested the newspaper would have covered up or glossed over these things, but that’s not the case.

If fights had broken out among students in the crowd, it would have come up. We would have talked about it in the newsroom, and it would have been in the story.

Apparently, at some point, students had an “emotional response” to the performances, which included a rap song and two spoken-word pieces that contained racial slurs.

You can see video clips on our website at www.Daily-Chronicle.com, if you haven’t already. Maybe it’s not right up your alley, but unless you’re in high school, you’re not the target audience.

But then, this story seems to have been driven by adults using social media to wade into their children’s world in a way that wasn’t helpful.

An assembly that wasn’t universally appreciated, disputes over something someone said or didn’t say, rumors that something crazy would happen the next day – these kind of events were pretty run-of-the-mill when I was in high school.

Only when school was over, we all went home, and for the most part, things ended.

We weren’t connected to large groups of our peers through social media. Rumors spread by word-of-mouth.

Today, they tear through the community on social media, and parents and students read them, share them and respond to them.

The online chatter Wednesday was persistent enough that the school district sent

out a robo-call message at 8:12 p.m. Wednesday. It should have been sooner, DeKalb School District 428 Superintendent Doug Moeller said.

About two hours later, parents were writing on the Daily Chronicle’s Facebook page about “threats of violence” and “gun threats” that had been made at DeKalb High School.

On through to Thursday, multiple people were talking about threats and guns and keeping kids out of school.

But these were rumors – rumors that were repeated and amplified through social media. Police and district officials said there were no direct threats of violence.

Still, people were concerned enough that more than 200 students were absent Thursday.

As a parent myself, I know people are going to do what they think necessary to keep their children safe. But if it was too dangerous for them to go to school Thursday, what about today? What about Monday? When is it safe?

In reality, it was probably safer Thursday at the school than most other days – there were extra police and administrators patrolling the halls.

District 428 officials could have done more to make that point to parents. After sending out a robo-call about students’ “emotional response,” there was no comment from the district for several hours, despite attempts by our reporters to reach them.

When there is no official story, rumors fill the void, and that’s what seems to have happened.

Police investigate violent incident on Pleasant Street

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – Police have arrested one suspect and are seeking another in a shooting that happened after a confrontation between two groups of people near the intersection of 10th and Pleasant streets about 3:40 p.m.

Thursday.

Two males suffered injuries that were not life-threatening and were taken to Kishwaukee Hospital, where a helicopter was called to airlift at least one.

One victim was shot in the foot, the other in the back, DeKalb police Cmdr. James McDougall said.

Police are searching the area for a suspect described as a male, light brown complexion, with a black and red hooded sweatshirt, and black sweatpants, according to a news release from NIU police.

A Ford Crown Victoria was towed from the corner of 10th and Pleasant.

From her home across the street, Stephanie Hinsch said she saw a group of three men and another group of six men, a woman and a dog

approach each other near the intersection. All of them appeared to be in the 18- to 20-year-old range, she said.

After 20 seconds of what seemed like a calm conversation, things turned violent.

“One of the guys in the group of three pulled out a gun and started shooting, maybe five rounds,” Hinsch said.

The woman stayed with one shooting victim, while the rest of those involved ran off, one group heading east on Pleasant, another running north on 10th, she said.

One of the victims ran into Flamingo Restaurant and Ice Cream, 1029 Pleasant St., DeKalb. Police did not allow anyone to enter or leave the restaurant, although workers continued to come in and out through the building’s back door.

School buses were dropping off students from Cortland Elementary School in the area not long after the shooting, but police had the scene secured by then.

The situation remains under investigation and police have not released a motive, McDougall said.

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – About 220 students at DeKalb High School stayed home from school Thursday, a day after a series of Black History Month assemblies led to racially charged exchanges and rumors about threats against the school, DeKalb School District 428 Superintendent Doug Moeller said.

Moeller said the district should have been more prompt in reaching out to parents about the situation Wednesday, and that content of the presentations should have been reviewed more closely.

However, he said authorities found there was no credible reason to cancel school.

“We work with the police and we try to assess the risk, and we found there to be little,” Moeller said. “Canceling school would have just had kids spending all day dwelling on it on social media.”

Students attended assemblies in three groups, during which students performed an original spoken word called “Angry Black Woman,” a rap song titled “I Can’t Breathe,” and other performances.

The Black History Month presentation was staged by the Black Student Union at the school.

“I don’t think [the high school administration] did their due diligence in terms of reviewing the skits and the songs that were going to be presented,” Moeller said. “Again, I didn’t find them offensive, but I can understand how some of our students might find them offensive, just given the race relationships in this town.”

There were “absolutely no fights whatsoever” at the school as a result of the assemblies, Moeller said, and student dismissal Wednesday went as normal. Principal Tamra Ropeter had a scheduled absence Thursday, he said.

The school’s first outreach to parents was a recorded message sent at 8:12 p.m. Wednesday.

District 428 Board President Victoria Newport wasn’t immediately available for comment Thursday.

Board member Howard Solomon said that he was “stunned to see as much dissension” as there was on social media.

“Saying there is much to be done is not anything I’d want to hide,” he said. “Unless you see a problem, there is no way you can address the problem.”

Latausha Allen, mother of student Andre Allen Jr. who performed in the assembly, said that she didn’t think her son’s performance of an original song, “I Can’t Breathe,” which focused on police violence and the Black Lives Matter movement, was offensive.

“I don’t think there was anything in there that is bashing another race,” she said. “It’s him expressing how he feels today about all the issues going on in DeKalb and all the around the country.”

Ninety-nine percent of the problem arose on social media afterward, Moeller said.

“When situations like this arise, there’s a lot of heightened feelings,

and what we’ve got to do is try to get the emotions in check,” Moeller said.

“Social media was going all night long, and watching a lot of these kids come in this morning, they looked like they hadn’t slept all night.”

Student Jacki Rapp said that she wasn’t offended by the presentation, but could see how some people could take it the wrong way.

She said that she didn’t see any fights at the school Wednesday.

“Yesterday, it was pretty much the poem that people were offended by,” she said. “I wasn’t offended at all. They could have maybe taken a different approach, but I liked it.”

Some students, such as Kadarian Nellem, said they found the performances meaningful.

He said that he didn’t see any fights at the school, but saw threats of violence on social media sites.

OBITUARIES GERALD B. LINDGREN

Born: July 20, 1926; in Sycamore, IL Died: Feb. 25, 2016; in Sycamore, IL Gerald Bert Lindgren, age 89, of Sycamore, died Thursday, February 25, 2016 in his home.

He was born July 20, 1926, in Sycamore, to Elmer and Agnes (Christensen) Lindgren. On December 22, 1956, he married Sally Dellenback in Kaneville. He grain farmed and raised beef cattle all his life in Sycamore and Mayfield Township in DeKalb County, Illinois, and Iowa County, Wisconsin.

Gerald was a member of Sycamore United Methodist Church, DeKalb Farm Bureau, and a life member of Sycamore Veterans Club. He served in the Korean conflict in the Army Corps of Engineers. Gerald was a world traveler, fisherman, square dancer, and avid golfer.

He is survived by his wife, Sally; children, Douglas (Tina) Lindgren of DeKalb, David (Colleen) Lindgren of Shabbona and Mary (Kenny) Jordan of Norfolk, Virginia; grandchildren, Wendy (Sten) Kresheck, Rebecca Crump, Nels (Andrea) Lindgren, Lauren (Zach) Isabel, Katrina (Dylan Larson, fiancée) Lindgren, and Noah Jordan; great-grandchildren, Daniel, Luke and Michael Kresheck, Gerald

Despite the lack of a credible threat, officials did take extra precautions. DeKalb police committed extra school resource officers to the high school, and Moeller said that other police were in the area. Several events were canceled Thursday including the Gamer’s Guild, credit recovery, after-school detention and the Black Student Union poetry slam. The police presence remained on campus until about 2:45 p.m. as students left.

Twelve administrators from around the district also were in the building Thursday, Moeller said.

It might be a few days before teachers address the issue in classrooms, he said. Moeller said the district might also hold parental information meetings in the future.

“Probably next week we’ll start bringing this up as a teachable moment, probably in our social studies classes,” Moeller said. “We’ll talk about it because it did bring to light an issue in the community.”

Shabbona celebrates Indian Creek girls hoops

ksmith@shawmedia.com SHABBONA – A tunnel of high-fives, blaring fire trucks and a school marching band bid the Indian Creek girls basketball team farewell Thursday, as they headed to the first state tournament in the school’s history.

“It’s been crazy,” senior guard Madison Russell said. “It’s been exciting for our community, our town, our school, everything.”

The Timberwolves will take on defending Class 1A state champion and No. 1 team in the state, Moweaqua Central A&M at 12:15 p.m. today at Illinois State University’s Redbird Arena.

If the turnout at the girls’ last game is any indication, the state tournament should be crowded with Indian Creek fans, girls basketball coach Paul Muchmore said. Advance tickets to the game were sold out by Wednesday afternoon, but additional tickets will be available at the venue.

The team’s success is as much a celebration for the village of Shabbona as a whole as it is for the players themselves, and even means a day off for Indian Creek students Friday so they can pack the stands at Redbird Arena.

DeKALB – Voters could get a better idea of how the three candidates seeking the Republican nomination in the DeKalb County State’s Attorney contest stack up next month at a debate hosted by Northern Illinois University College Republicans.

The organization will host a Republican primary debate at 7:30 p.m.

In city, triage for mentally ill before jail

CHICAGO – One of the nation’s most crowded jails may get relief later this year with the opening of a 24-hour triage center in Chicago where police can take people experiencing psychiatric or substance-abuse crises. The goal is to ease pressure on the county jail, where officials have long complained that about a fifth of the detainees are locked up because of mental health problems.

Based on successful models in other cities, the initiative comes as the Chicago Police Department and Mayor Rahm Emanuel try to deflect criticism over high-profile police shootings of young black men where mental health may have been a factor.

Advocates for the plan, which Cook County officials shared with The Associated Press ahead of an official announcement, said it will work only if officers are properly trained.

“In a perfect world, one would hope officers observing a person with a mental health problem would get them to a treatment center,” said Dr. Jay Shannon, chief of Cook County Health & Hospitals System. “I don’t think it’s as simple as ‘build it and they will come.’ ” Nationally, as mental institutions closed in recent years, jails in large and small cities saw a surge in inmates with serious mental illnesses, most of them arrested for nonviolent crimes. SPRINGFIELD – A trade association for online daily fantasy sports sites said Thursday it supports an Illinois House plan to regulate online sports betting as the sites’ legality has been challenged in the state and around the country.

NATION BRIEFS HESSTON, Kan. – A sheriff in south-central Kansas said Thursday that four people, including a gunman, are dead after a series of shootings at a business, its parking lot and two streets nearby.

Harvey County Sheriff T. Walton said at a news conference that all the dead were shot inside Excel Industries, a plant in Hesston that makes lawn mower products. He said 14 were injured in the shootings.

Law enforcement officers killed the gunman, who worked at the plant, after he began shooting at them, Walton said.

Before driving to the plant, the man fired from his vehicle, the sheriff said.

The shooting comes less than a week after authorities said a man opened fire at several locations in Kalamazoo, Michigan, leaving six people dead and two severely wounded.

Anxious to slow Trump, both Rubio and Cruz go after him The ASSOCIATED PRESS HOUSTON – Brawling from the get-go, a fiery Marco Rubio went hard after Donald Trump in Thursday night’s Republican debate, lacerating the front-runner’s position on immigration, his privileged background, his speaking style and more.

Ted Cruz piled on, too, questioning the front-runner’s conservative credentials, as the two senators tag-teamed Trump in a debate that reflected the increasing urgency of their effort to take down the billionaire businessman before he becomes unstoppable. It was a rare night where the bombastic Trump found himself on the defensive.

The two-hours-plus debate played out as a raucous night of tit-for-tat insults, with candidates shouting over one another so much that it was hard to follow at times. The showdown came just days before the Super Tuesday 11-state round of mega-voting that could all but lock up the nomination.

When Trump faulted Rubio on a deal to buy a $179,000 house, the Florida senator shot back that if Trump “hadn’t inherited $200 million, you know where Donald Trump would be right now? Selling watches in Manhattan.”

In another rough exchange, Rubio accused Trump of shifting his position on deportation, hiring people from other countries to take jobs from Americans and being fined for worker violations. Joining in, Cruz criticized Trump for suggesting he alone had “discovered the

issue of illegal immigration.”

Trump shot back at Rubio: “I hired tens of thousands of people. You’ve hired nobody.”

As for Cruz, Trump took a more personal tack, touting his own ability to get along with others and adding: “You get along with nobody. ... You should be ashamed of yourself.”

Both Rubio and Cruz said that Trump had had to pay a $1 million fine for illegal immigration hiring.

The candidates were pressed on why they haven’t released their tax returns as promised. The GOP’s 2012 nominee, Mitt Romney, suggested this week that Trump was holding back because there was a “bombshell” that would be revealed.

Trump said he’s been audited by the IRS every year and can’t release his returns while that’s going on.

Rubio and Cruz both promised to release more of theirs in the next two days.

Rubio was the principal aggressor of the night, and he held nothing back. Taking on Trump’s declaration that he’d build a wall on the Mexican border, Rubio declared: “If he builds a wall the way he built Trump Tower, he’ll be using illegal immigration to do it.”

Trump, for his part, insisted that even though officials in Mexico have said they won’t pay for his planned wall, “Mexico will pay for the wall.” And he said that because Mexico’s current and former presidents had criticized him on the issue, “the wall just got 10 feet taller.”

Doubling down on a bad plan

Labor talks can be contentious, but that’s no reason for legislators to subvert the process.

The recent vote by the Illinois House to intervene in labor negotiations between Gov. Bruce Rauner and a powerful public employee union has led to another war of words about what transpired during the months of unsuccessful labor talks.

Rauner contends that negotiators for the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees have refused to budge from their initial demands and that talks have reached an impasse.

AFSCME argues to the contrary, insisting that they have been flexible and will continue that same approach if and when talks resume.

Someone is not being fully truthful, and it will be up to the Illinois Labor Relations Board to resolve the dispute.

In the meantime, the governor’s office and AFSCME are exchanging words over what’s involved and what to do about it.

Last week, the Illinois House passed HB 580, legislation that strips the governor’s office of its negotiating authority and leaves settlement of contract terms to independent arbitrators.

It’s unclear when or if the Senate will take up the measure. Rauner has promised to veto the bill if it reaches his desk. So it’s important to note the House fell two votes short of a veto-proof majority when it passed the bill.

In other words, Rauner, for now, has the votes to make his veto stick.

As if to confirm the unsavory political intent of the legislation to favor a Democratic constituency group, the legislation would apply only to Rauner, not future governors. So the governor is well within his rights to call this bill what it is, a potentially costly bailout of labor.

Pressed to explain, the administration issued a statement detailing an extra $3.2 billion in costs taxpayers would bear if AFSCME’s contract proposal takes effect. In response, AFSCME issued its own statement claiming that “the administration is jacking up purported costs by including costs associated with other state employees and university employees, not just the 38,000 AFSCME state employees.”

Who’s telling the truth? Maybe both, in their own way. Maybe neither.

Maybe one and not the other. Who can say? But if the union’s claims are accurate, it’s not as much at the mercy of Rauner as it claims to be.

AFSCME’s contract has long since expired, but Rauner and union negotiators agreed to extend the contract indefinitely as talks continue.

To allay union fears about his purportedly evil intentions, Rauner also pledged in writing not to lock out state employees.

The contract extension agreement also set up a process by which both sides can seek outside assistance from the labor board if one side believes the talks have reached an impasse because the other was not bargaining in good faith.

Rauner has asked the board to declare an impasse, noting that virtually no progress has been made on a contract after months of talks. AFSCME disputes that. A fact-finding effort will precede any board decision.

There’s no doubt the stakes are potentially high. If the labor board rules there is an impasse, the governor would have legal authority to implement his final offer. Considering the bankrupt state of the state, it should be no surprise he’s seeking a wage freeze. At the same time, union members could challenge that approach by going on strike.

Illinois has a long, successful history of collective bargaining. The same rules apply to both sides, and there’s no need to change them in the middle of the game.

This man, who wants to be our president, celebrating one of the causes of poverty in America.

We in the media helped to create this monster.

Sure, Donald Trump is the inevitable outcome of years of Republican pandering to the far right, but we gave him wings. Not all of us, but too many of us, cast his hateful rhetoric as entertaining.

It was “wacky.” “Outrageous.”

“Crazy.”

I found all of these descriptions with a quick Google search. They sound like reviews of a skit from “Saturday Night Live” – which Trump has hosted, of course, because he’s just so entertaining.

The day after Trump won Nevada, the latest Quinnipiac poll showed him beating Ohio’s Gov. John Kasich by five points – in Ohio.

This poll came out the day after Kasich, the GOP candidate the media has painted as a moderate, told a crowd in Virginia that he owed his victory in 1978 to “women who left their kitchens” to go knock on doors for him.

Unbeknownst to Kasich, apparently, many women were pursuing careers by ’78, and those still at home were doing plenty of work that had

nothing to do with food preparation.

Kasich’s depiction of women came as no surprise to those of us here in Ohio who remember his public claim that political wives are “doing the laundry” while guys like him chase their dreams.

Kasich sees women as enablers of male ambition, and his political pawns. And so last weekend he signed a bill to defund Planned Parenthood, which means a loss of state money for breast-cancer screenings, STD testing and other health care that has nothing to do with abortion.

What a moderate, that guy Kasich.

And now he’s losing to Trump, in his own state.

Pundits, one after another, complain, “He’s not funny anymore.”

With a straight face, they say this.

Don’t leave latest privacy issues to the courts The running debate over data privacy between Apple and law enforcement often seems irreconcilable.

Tech companies are creating devices that allow people to routinely evade wholly lawful warrants for possible evidence, potentially enabling all sorts of crime, those on the law enforcement side warn. The country must look for ways to allow the FBI and others to access protected data for legitimate law enforcement purposes while minimizing the collateral risks to everyone else’s information, they say.

The country cannot both have strong encryption and offer law enforcement routine access to encrypted information, many experts and civil libertarians shoot back. The digital world is filled with malicious actors looking for any opportunity to steal valuable information. Instead

of creating tools to breach secured data and starting down a slippery slope in which everyone’s critical information is at risk, the nation must err on the side of data protection.

These two sides collided spectacularly last week over San Bernardino, California, terrorist Syed Rizwan Farook’s iPhone 5C, which Apple admits it could help the government break into – but will not, in part because the precedent could define what law enforcement expects from tech companies. More than anything else, the collision has underlined the need for a new policy that would set clear rules for tech firms and law enforcement. This is not a question that should be left to magistrate judges ruling in the heat of a case.

Luckily, since last week both sides have made subtle moves toward agreement on one thing: There

ought to be a more rational, orderly – and potentially productive – public debate on these matters. “I also hope all Americans will participate in the long conversation we must have about how to both embrace the technology we love and get the safety we need,” FBI Director James B. Comey wrote in a note on the Lawfare blog.

For its part, Apple recommended “a commission or other panel of experts on intelligence, technology, and civil liberties to discuss the implications for law enforcement, national security, privacy, and personal freedoms.

Apple would gladly participate in such an effort.”

Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, and Sen. Mark R. Warner, D-Virginia, are drafting a bill they intend to introduce next week that would establish “a national commission on security and technology challenges

in the digital age” composed of “the brightest minds from the technology sector, the legal world, computer science and cryptography, academia, civil liberties and privacy advocates, law enforcement and intelligence.”

It would be charged with “finding creative ways to protect our security – both public and private.”

Given the stakes, proposing a commission may seem like an underwhelming response, and both sides may prove willing to talk but not budge. But the alternative is courts drawing the lines, which may be worse for Apple and other tech firms than at least trying to find some way to thread the data security needle.

If there were another major terrorist attack in the United States, the debate could quickly turn much less favorable to Silicon Valley.

The Lenten sermon for Tuesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in DeKalb is titled “Broken Justice Restored,” based on 2 Corinthians 5: 20-21. It will be delivered by the Rev. Ray Krueger.

Worship services are scheduled at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m.

Indian Creek to face defending champion

jseverson@shawmedia.com SHABBONA – The Indian Creek girls basketball team’s dream season now faces its toughest test yet.

The Timberwolves square off against defending Class 1A champion Central A&M at 12:15 p.m. Friday in a Class 1A state semifinal at Redbird Arena in Normal.

While this is the first state tournament appearance in school history for Indian Creek, it is the third year in a row that Central A&M (31-1 overall) has made the final four.

“Somebody told me this is the third year in a row they made it to state, but I’m so focused on us and that we’re ready than worrying about other teams,” Indian Creek coach Paul Muchmore said on Tuesday. “I don’t know how much pressure (Central A&M) feels – they might not feel any – but we have absolutely no pressure, I don’t think. Our girls should be able to come out and play and have fun.”

While Central A&M coach Tom Dooley refuted the idea that the Raiders’ experience would definitely be an advantage over Indian Creek, he said he was impressed with what he saw out of the Timberwolves.

“We’re going to have trouble with their size, and they have some good speed,” Dooley said.

The Raiders, who beat Hardin Calhoun, 51-41, in the state championship last season, are led by 5-foot-7 senior forward Mikah Maples (16.0 points per game, 6.0 rebounds), 5-foot-6 senior guard Ryan Dooley (13.5 points, 5.3 assists) and 5-foot-9 junior forward Emma Meyer (11.3 points, 5 rebounds).

Only two of their wins came by fewer than 10 points and aside from their only loss of the year – 55-54 to Pleasant Plains – the last team to stay within single-digits of the Raiders was Tuscola (55-51) on Dec. 17.

However, the Timberwolves (31-1 overall) have had the benefit of winning lopsided games (22 by double digits) and also had to pull out close contests (nine by single digits) – their lone loss was a 52-50 defeat to Woodstock (3A).

“We’ve been in a lot of big games this year, and we’ve won them all,” said Indian Creek senior post Josie Diehl, who averages a team-high 14.7 points and 10.7 rebounds per game.

No games have been bigger for the Timberwolves than the last two – a 42-39 win over Annawan in the Class 1A Serena Sectional Championship and a 54-50 victory over Galena in

Both of those games came down to the final seconds, and the Timberwolves trailed at halftime of each contest.

Against Annawan, they were down, 15-13, at halftime and 22-15 in the middle of the third quarter.

Against Galena, they trailed, 20-16, at halftime and 39-33 early in the fourth quarter.

“We haven’t really gotten nervous and panicked like we have in past years,” said senior guard Madison Russell, who averages nine points per game for the Timberwolves. “I think we stay together and we know that we can do it. We’re a lot calmer in the second half.”

Muchmore pointed to comeback victories earlier in the year – 44-40 over Ottawa Marquette and 59-49 over Ashton-Franklin Center in a tournament after Christmas – that have helped the Timberwolves in the last two postseason games. While the stakes have been significantly higher in the sectional championship and supersectional, Muchmore said the concept is the same.

“They aren’t seeing it as different as they’re playing,” he said. “After the game, there’s a different level of excitement, but when they’re in the game, they’re playing. DeKALB – It’s been in the back of Daniel Hein’s mind since the state meet last season.

After finishing in second place in both the 100-yard backstroke and 100yard butterfly for the DeKalb-Sycamore boys swimming team in 2015, Hein comes back with a chance at making history at the IHSA Boys Swimming State Championships on Friday and Saturday at Evanston Township.

“He’s been talking about it all season,” Barbs coach Melanie Chambers said. “All season he’s talked about having unfinished business.”

Not only can Hein become the first Barbs boy swimmer to win an individual state championship, he has a chance to set the state record in the backstroke – his 48.75 finish in the preliminaries last season is the fourth fastest, with 48.07 (Max St. George of Wheaton North in 2015) being the record.

While Hein carries the burden of being the favorite in both events – he has the highest seeded times in the state in both the backstroke (49.39) and the butterfly (49.36) – the senior is quick to deflect the attention away from his chance at history. Instead, he focuses on the teammates joining him in Evanston – senior Jacob Bjork in the 100 breaststroke and 100 freestyle and the 200 medley relay (Hein, Bjork, sophomore Riley Lohse and junior Dylan Rasmussen) and the 400 freestyle relay (Hein, Bjork, Lohse and senior Austin Bockman.)

However, Hein doesn’t shy away from the idea of the pressure of potentially having a chance to win a pair of individual state championships this weekend.

“To be honest, it crosses my mind every once in a while – I know it’s there and what I have to do to get it,” said

After the preliminary race, the top six advance to the finals while those who finished seventh through 12th race in the consolation heat. During the state meet last season, Bjork finished in ninth place in the breaststroke – earning himself a chance to swim in the final day but failed to qualify for the finals.

“When I finished last year, it wasn’t quite the finish I wanted,” Bjork said.

“I was very, very happy I made it in the top 12 and got to swim on Saturday, but I didn’t quite get the time I wanted.

I wanted to go for that top six. It was bittersweet.”

Currently, Bjork’s seed time (58.88) for the breaststroke is 18th in the state, but he has a season-best time of 58.44 in the event – which would put him in 10th.

While Hein and Bjork have a wealth of experience at the state meet, the rest of the relay teams will be making their first appearances.

relay that featured Hein and Bjork finished fifth in the state (1:34.29). Coming into this weekend, the Barbs are seeded ninth (1:35.21). In the 400 freestyle relay – which narrowly missed out on a chance to medal by finishing 13th last season – is seeded 30th (3:12.67).

Chambers said she’s been trying to prepare the younger swimmers for the pressures of the state meet – and saw a difference in the calmer Hein and Bjork.

“There’s no words to describe it,” Chambers said on Wednesday about the state meet. “It’s a meet unlike any other. The boys are very focused. Right now, it’s the calm before the storm.”

Sox vice chairman ‘creative whirlwind’ Exec had been ill for past 2 years

Eddie Einhorn, a vendor in his youth at Comiskey Park who became a TV broadcasting visionary and then part owner of the White Sox with his former law school friend Jerry Reinsdorf, has died. He was 80.

Einhorn, who was in ill health the past two years of his life, died in Alpine, New Jersey, of complications from a stroke.

Although he hadn’t been involved in the team’s day-to-day operations for several years, Einhorn was still listed as the Sox’s vice chairman, a role he had served for 25 years. He was, more than Reinsdorf, the face of Sox ownership when he served as team president and chief operating officer from 1981 to ’90. He was also on the Bulls’ board of directors in his long-standing involvement with Reinsdorf, the Sox chairman.

Einhorn and Reinsdorf joined to buy a controlling interest in the Sox in 1981. He is known as the architect of baseball’s first billion-dollar TV contract.

In 1990, he moved to the vice chairman role and away from day to day operations of the club.

“Eddie was a creative whirlwind whose ideas – many of them far ahead of their time – changed the landscape of sports, and Eddie Einhorn sports on television, forever,” Reinsdorf said in a statement.

“He was a man of many interests, projects, ideas and opinions, and we all will miss him dearly. It is exceedingly rare in this day and age to have enjoyed a friendship and a working partnership that lasted our lifetimes. We celebrated many great moments together.”

“We are going to miss him just being around, his energy,” team vice president Ken Williams said. “He’s one of the Top 10 characters that I’ve ever met in my life, and by that I say that in a good way.”

“He was an interesting man and a

great man,” longtime Sox trainer Herm Schneider said Thursday morning at the White Sox’s spring training facility in Glendale, Arizona. “I’ve known him probably since Day 1 since Jerry and Eddie took over, the Sunshine Boys. He was an incredibly brilliant guy.’’

Einhorn was part of a large Sox front-office contingent in Houston for Game 4 of the 2005 Word Series, when the Sox won the their first title in 88 years.

“The baseball gods are still smiling on us,” he told reporters. “It’s been worth the wait. We didn’t think it would take this long, but we made it.”

Before the Sox, Einhorn was the founder and chairman of TVS Television Network, a leader of sports programming in the 1970s that telecast college basketball’s “Game of the Century” between the Houston Cougars and the UCLA Bruins from the Astrodome in 1968.

Einhorn put the Sox on pay TV in the early 1980s, a move that didn’t work but was ahead of its time. It prompted broadcaster Harry Caray to move to the Cubs after the 1981 season and paved the way for Ken Harrelson and Don Drysdale in the Sox TV booth.

“He was just a special guy,” Harrelson said Thursday. “He was, in essence, the reason Don and myself came to Chicago. He was a genius in his field.

He started TVS. He’s the Godfather of college basketball on television. He’s the godfather of March Madness. He was way ahead of his time, and he had [guts] enough to do it. He had character and strength and the stones to get it done.”

Harrelson reflected on postgame talks about baseball in the Comiskey Park Bards Room with Einhorn, Reinsdorf and Drysdale that would last until 1 or 2 a.m.

“Don and I didn’t realize at first just what a commitment they had to winning,’’ Harrelson said. “We thought they were just businessmen, and then we realized how much they loved the game.”

Einhorn is survived by his wife of 53 years, Ann, daughter, Jennifer (and her husband, Darryl), grandson, Meyer, and son, Jeff. Services will be at noon Sunday in Fair Lawn, New Jersey.

The Sox will honor Einhorn by wearing a sleeve patch during the regular season.

Hawks trade for Ladd, stumble against Preds

mlazerus@suntimes.com CHICAGO – Jonathan Toews was one of the last people in the hockey world to learn he had a new linemate.

At the first TV timeout Thursday night, United Center public address announcer Gene Honda broke the news to the crowd that the Blackhawks had acquired Andrew Ladd. Down on the ice, Toews couldn’t quite make out the announcement. But it wasn’t hard to figure it out.

“I didn’t know until I saw him up there (on the scoreboard) and figured that’s what the announcement must be about,” Toews said. “What else could it be, you know?”

The Ladd announcement elicited the biggest cheer of the night, as the Hawks lost, 3-1, to the Nashville Predators. So the Ladd news didn’t give the Hawks enough of a boost to get them past a red-hot Predators team that is 8-0-2 in its past 10 road games, and 5-0-3 in its past eight games overall.

“It should have, but it didn’t, [based] on

the result,” Toews said. “I don’t think we played a bad game, it just didn’t fall our way at the end.”

Calle Jarnkrok one-timed a Mike Fisher pass past Corey Crawford with 1:51 left in the game to lift the Predators to the victory. It was the Hawks’ second straight loss, but not nearly as poor a showing as they had in Sunday’s 6-1 outdoor loss to the Minnesota Wild. Pekka Rinne all but stole this one with 38 saves. He was brilliant from the outset, robbing Toews twice in the first period, then again in the second.

He also gloved an Andrew Shaw breakaway attempt in the final minute of the second period.

After a scoreless first, Brent Seabrook got the Hawks on the board at 5:27 of the second, blasting a one-timer in the slot, off a Jiri Sekac feed, past Rinne. But the Predators tied it less than four minutes later on Viktor Arvidsson’s goal. The game remained tied until Jarnkrok hammered home a one-timer at 18:09. Miikka Salomaki added an empty-netter for the Predators.

Oakland sends Brooks to Cubs for Coghlan

MESA, Ariz. – The Cubs acquired right-handed pitcher Aaron Brooks from the Oakland Athletics for outfielder Chris Coghlan on Thursday.

The 30-year-old Coghlan batted .250 with 25 doubles, 16 home runs and 41 RBIs in 148 games for the Cubs last season.

The 25-year-old Brooks is 3-5 with an 8.38 ERA in 58 innings during 15 big league appearances, including 10 as a starter, over the past two seasons with Kansas City and Oakland. He made 20 appearances in Triple-A last season and went 7-5 with a 3.56 ERA along with 103 strikeouts.

Cubs, Fowler agree to $13M, 1-year contract

MESA, Ariz. – Outfielder Dexter Fowler agreed to stay with the Cubs, spurning a $33 million, three-year offer from the Baltimore Orioles to accept a $13 million, one-year deal with the Cubs on Thursday that includes a mutual option for 2017.

“This is where my heart is,” said Fowler, who surprised his teammates by showing up at workouts alongside Cubs executive Theo Epstein after manager Joe Maddon called the team together.

Fowler rejected a $15.8 million, one-year qualifying offer from the Cubs in November to test the free-agent market. Under the agreement announced Thursday, he gets $8 million this year, and the sides have a $9 million option for 2017 with a $5 million buyout.

Ferrell scores 27, leads No. 18 Indiana past Illinois

CHAMPAIGN – Yogi Ferrell scored 27 points and No. 18 Indiana used a huge second half to rout Illinois, 74-47, on Thursday night.

The Big Ten leaders trailed 28-27 at halftime, but Ferrell scored 19 second-half points and Indiana (23-6, 12-3) pulled away from the Illini (12-16, 4-11).

Ferrell’s 3-pointer with 7:58 left put the Hoosiers up 56-37.

Opioid addiction is on the rise Dear Dr. K: The news media says we suddenly have an epidemic of addiction to prescription opioid painkillers. These pills have been around for a long time. What’s changed?

Dear Reader: Developing treatments that reduce or eliminate pain has been one of the great accomplishments of medical science.

Until the past couple of centuries, our ancestors had no way to relieve the pain from a major injury or from a disease like cancer.

The first pain medicines, such as morphine, typically were given by injection. But then opioid pain pills (and syrups) became available. Examples include hydrocodone (used in Vicodin), oxycodone (used in Percocet), methadone, codeine and morphine.

These prescription drugs reduce the brain’s recognition of pain by binding to certain receptors in the body.

These medicines initially were used to treat acute, short-lasting pain from injury and longer-lasting pain from cancer. However, over the past 20 years, the medicines increasingly have been prescribed to treat chronic pain conditions (such as arthritis).

Some people seek these medicines, however, not to treat their chronic pain, but to sell them to other people. Some of those people just enjoy getting high. Others have an opiate addiction from heroin, and use the pills to prevent opiate withdrawal.

One problem with opioids is a person can develop a tolerance to these drugs. That means, over time, a person needs higher and higher doses to achieve the same degree of pain relief.

A second problem is the body can become physically dependent on these drugs.

A third problem is use of opioid painkillers is the biggest risk factor for addiction to heroin.

I spoke to my colleague Dr. Wynne Armand, associate physician at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital, about the current opioid epidemic. She noted much of the current problem stems from the fact so many more of these drugs are prescribed today. Four times as many painkillers were prescribed in 2015 in the United States than were prescribed in an average year in the 1990s.

Health officials are working to educate health-care providers on safe prescribing.

They also are educating the public about the risks of opioid painkillers.

Anyone who takes an opioid pain medicine should follow these guidelines to reduce the risk of abuse and overdose: • Store medication safely.

• Never share your medication with anyone else.

• Take the medicine exactly as instructed.

• Ask your doctor if a lower dose might be an option.

• Ask your doctor about other ways to manage pain. Many non-drug options can help.

• If the medication is not working well, talk to your doctor.

• Do not take overlapping prescriptions from multiple providers.

If you suspect you may be developing an addiction, ask for help as soon as possible.
