Not in the market for breakup planning, but …

We should soon have a business incubator in DeKalb County, and additional online resources to help would-be entrepreneurs get started.

One goal of these efforts is to entice recent college and university grads to stay in the area to chase their dreams, rather than leaving immediately. If DeKalb or DeKalb County could retain 5 percent of the graduates from Northern Illinois University each year, the thinking goes, imagine how well-off we could be in just a few years’ time.

Another goal is to help with creation of businesses that will fill some of the vacant commercial space around the area.

If local business incubation efforts gain traction, we consumers also might have some new services available that could improve our quality of life.

Friends who have lived in the San Francisco Bay area tell me about how the economy there is different. You can find web-based services to handle pretty much anything you need, from doing the laundry to analyzing your medical expenses. There’s a lot of creativity in the marketplace.

Here in DeKalb County, we still don’t have a ride-sharing service. So we’re a bit behind the curve.

In Chicago, the city’s 1871 business incubator is nurturing new entrepreneurs. There

That’s right, it’s a service that helps you plan to dump that significant other who’s become a significant bummer, while minimizing the risk of costly property damage or worse.

“Breaking up is hard. It is not about emotions, it is about logistics,” the company’s founder, Dino Russo, writes on his company’s website. “For the last 10 years, I’ve been helping people get out of relationships fast, with minimal risk and little to nonfinancial chaos.”

I’m not in the market for breakup consulting (and sure hope Kate isn’t), but it never would have occurred to me to hire someone for that, either.

Maybe local business incubation efforts can encourage some creative people to come up with other things we haven’t thought of yet.

NIU job fair brings students, employers together

DeKALB – With graduation fewer than three months away, Northern Illinois University seniors were among those who were looking for jobs and internships this week at the university’s spring semester job fair.

“This fair is really where students that are looking at getting that job and starting their life after NIU, this is where it happens,” said Brandon Lagana, acting executive director of career services, the department at NIU that puts on the fair.

Cody McMurray, 21, switched from studying journalism to pursuing finance, and he hopes to land a position with any one of the financial services companies that were at the fair. He graduates in May. “I hear that [companies] are hiring for finance,” said McMurray, who’s looking for a job in banking. “They want people in that major because of the recession [recovery].”

The university hosted career fairs three days this week at the NIU Convocation Center. Monday was for students looking to land jobs in education, including in local school districts. Tuesday was all about internships, and Wednesday’s event brought a variety of employers representing an array of industries – in public and private sectors.

The fairs were open to NIU students, alumni and staff.

Hundreds of companies participated over the three days, but the university didn’t release figures yet on students and others who attended the fair. Lagana said 813 strolled through the spring 2015 event.

“The students really have their pick of over 220 employers to be able to meet, network, to make a great first impression,” he said.

Compared with the outlook for graduates in leaner years, such as 2008 through 2010, the job outlook for this year’s students is not so bad.

Recent studies, such as one from Michigan State University that predicted hiring will increase 15 percent this year give Cody and others in this year’s graduating class some hope.

Despite the financial burn some social services are experiencing right now in Illinois, decrying the loss of state funding, the industry is expected to grow nationwide. The U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics predicts that health care

“A lot of people still want to work in a field where they can help others and make a difference,” said Jennifer Wolf, who was at the job fair recruiting for

Bethesda Lutheran Communities. The nonprofit provides services to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

NIU graduating senior Nailah Cartman, 22, is hoping to use her photojour-

nalism degree instead of having to fall back on her internship experience with a nonprofit organization.

“I do want to see more choices here at the job fair,” said Cartman, who also double majored in community leadership and civic engagement.

She said the fair is an opportunity for students such as her to get in front of potential employers for the first time and to network.

“This is all practice for the real world,” she said.

DeKalb Black Student Union holds event at DeKalb High School

DeKALB – Jazz, poetry, spokenword, dance and performance pieces filled the morning at DeKalb High School as the school’s Black Student Union held its annual assembly in honor of Black History Month, which takes place in February.

The object of the assembly is to educate students about black history and black people’s contributions to society, said Dominique Gunn, adviser for the group and a security guard at the high school.

Maybe I’m mad about the fact that all my years in the school system I’ve had to listen to white students laugh at and mock my brothers and sisters take pride in the culture their ancestors tried to hard to annihilate.

“Mad that they have the audacity to ask, ‘Why don’t we have a white history month?’

DeKALB – Police are investigating a burglary of the Shabbona Casey’s, from which about $1,000 of video surveillance equipment was stolen.

DeKalb County Crime Stoppers believe someone entered the store, 317 W. Comanche Ave., Shabbona, about 3 a.m.

Saturday by breaking the lock on the door.

An employee who was scheduled to open the store called police when they found the lock had been broken, the

alarm system damaged and about $1,000 in video surveillance equipment stolen, DeKalb County Sheriff’s detective Jeremy Grubbs said.

No money was reported stolen and so far investigators have found no witnesses, he said.

Anyone with information about the burglary is asked to contact DeKalb County Crime Stoppers at 815-895-3272 or crimestoppers@dekalbcounty.org.

Tips can remain anonymous and could be eligible for up to a $1,000 cash reward.

Rittgarn immediately thought of the medical expenses that would quickly pile up. His youngest son, Aaron, was diagnosed with brain cancer at age 12, and though today – at age 21 – Aaron is healthy, Rittgarn said he remembers what it was like facing those bills.

So, he had his middle son, Erik – a Colonial employee – and Irmen set up a GoFundMe page to provide an avenue for Fodge’s friends, co-workers and customers to help offset her medical costs and receive updates on her health.

To date, Fodge’s café regulars, coworkers and others have donated more than $6,700.

What’s more, nearly 500 patrons visited Colonial on Feb. 17 as part of a Colonial Cares Fundraising Night in Fodge’s honor. The restaurant donated 15 percent of each customer’s bill to Fodge’s cause, and – at the end of the night – nearly $700 was raised.

“It was so great to hear everybody talking about Mom … ,” Irmen said.

“People that couldn’t make it sent cards to her or wrote messages to her.”

Fodge couldn’t attend the event, but she did video-chat with several people, and Irmen said the night was a huge morale booster for her.

Later, Fodge shared via email how she felt about the outpouring of support.

“I can’t begin to tell you how amazing it feels to be so supported and cared for by my co-workers, friends and family,” she wrote. “All of these people share a special place in my heart and mean more to me then they may ever know.

I know that God has placed them all in my life, and for that I am extremely thankful. I couldn’t do this on my own.”

ST. CHARLES – Peggy Fodge has been a server at Colonial Café and Ice Cream the last 20 years.

The DeKalb resident is a longtime favorite of many customers, providing “traditional perfect service,” according to one patron.

“She’s the best; she’s irreplaceable,” said Rick Rittgarn, director of operations at Colonial, who has worked with Fodge the past two decades. “Peggy does the little things, the special things. … At Christmas, she makes fudge at home and brings it in for her customers. She gets really involved with whatever [fundraising] initiative Colonial has – she’s always the leader of the pack with the most donations.”

But, recently, one of Colonial’s most requested servers has been the one in need of support. And her old customers have flocked to her aid.

Just before Thanksgiving, Fodge – who works at the Colonial on Randall Road in St. Charles and used to work at a former location on Route 38 in Geneva – was diagnosed with advanced-stage tongue cancer. In early December, she underwent a 10 ∏-hour surgery during which surgeons removed three-quarters of her tongue and the lymph nodes in her neck.

She also underwent radiation and chemotherapy treatments, and is slated for further treatment in the future.

“Even though she hasn’t been there in a couple of months, everyone is just praying and supporting her, and that’s what keeps her strong; that’s what keeps our family strong,” said Katie Irmen, one of Fodge’s three adult children, who also works at Colonial. “I always say, ‘I ran into so and so; they were thinking about you,’ and she gets emotional. She misses her customers.

She says, ‘I wish I could see them; I miss them all the time.’”

As snow falls outside, Ollie’s cashier Kyleigh Blanchard takes an order during the popular frozen custard place’s opening day Wednesday in Sycamore. The custard shop had a steady day of business despite the weather, and some customers said eating there on opening day was tradition.

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Irene Pelan has enjoyed Ollie’s Frozen Custard on the business’ opening day for the past 15 years, so she didn’t bat an eye at the falling snowflakes when she placed her order Wednesday.

Ollie’s, 2290 Oakland Drive, Sycamore, began its spring season Wednesday despite a forecast that called for wintry temperatures. Customers were happy to line up in the 30-degree weather, however, as long as it meant getting a taste of their favorite flavors.

“It’s family-oriented,” Pelan said.

“It’s been here forever; it’s nice people; it’s fun; it’s a tradition.”

Ollie’s will be open 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays and 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays throughout the season.

About 10 cars waited in the parking lot for the shop to open, and within the first half-hour of business Wednesday, Ollie’s drew more than 30 customers, owner Joe Craden said.

“We’ve opened in the wintertime in a snow storm many times,” Craden said. “Opening day, you have to be there when you say you’re going to be

After finishing his dinner at Applebee’s, customer Alberto Hernandez headed over to the 31-year-old custard shop for dessert.

“I just like their ice cream,” he said.

Although business was steady

Wednesday, Craden is hoping for longer lines this weekend.

“Last year on opening day, I think we had about three or five inches of snow. We’re looking forward to Saturday,” he said. “Saturday’s a high of 50 and sunny. It’s going to be a beautiful day.”

MALTA – Kishwaukee College officials said some students who were told they didn’t pass the GED exam may have scored well enough after all.

Test-takers may receive an email from MyGED, the online center for the high school diploma equivalency test, letting them know that passing scores have been lowered. Anyone who took the GED test up to two years ago, who scored above 145, may now be declared to have passed it and can receive their credential.

“GED has lowered the passing score from 150 to 145, and they have grandfathered that score back to all tests taken since Jan. 1, 2014,” Joanne Kantner, dean of Kishwaukee College’s adult education and transition programs, said in a written statement.

That was the advice technology entrepreneur Dennis Barsema gave to about 100 students Wednesday at Cornerstone Christian Academy in Sycamore as part of a quarterly Center for Career Advancement program. Barsema, a Northern Illinois University graduate, started several successful technology companies before dedicating his life to teaching about social entrepreneurship.

“I’m a believer in failure – we learn from our mistakes,” Barsema, 62, said.

“When you do fail, fail fast. Don’t stay in a mistake for too long.”

Metrics are the key to failing fast, said Barsema, who is the largest donor in NIU history and is the chairman of the Northern Illinois University Foundation. If the metrics don’t show progress, it’s time to pivot. If that doesn’t work, it might be time for another change – or time to pull the plug, he said.

Barsema, a 1977 NIU graduate, told students about lessons he’d learned over the course of his career, from his first job in sales at Burroughs to his work as president and CEO of Redback Networks, a broadband technology firm acquired by Ericsson for $1.9 billion in 2007. He told the students that that they’d never be the smartest person in the room, but that they could be the hardest-working per-

Wednesday’s Center for Career Advancement event also included a presentation from Cornerstone Christian Academy graduate Dan Kapper. Kapper is the video director at OC Imageworks, a DeKalb-based video and design agency.

He told students the foundation that the school helped him build for his life set him up for success.

Child welfare agency files plan to improve

CHICAGO – The state’s troubled child welfare agency has submitted an improvement plan to a judge that details more oversight, pilot programs and training, things that officials said Wednesday will “help transform” the system that serves thousands of Illinois children.

The Department of Children and Family Services filed the plan late Tuesday. It’s part of a decades-old consent decree to improve conditions and follows a lawsuit last year from the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois that alleged “dangerously inadequate” care and subsequent suggestions from outside experts.

Problems at the agency, where there have been eight directors in five years, have been well publicized in court documents, legislative panels and news reports. They include deficient care for

Chicago State to end school year early to save money

CHICAGO – Chicago State University has told students and faculty that it was eliminating spring break and shortening the semester because it might have to close down because of a lack of funding amid the prolonged stalemate over a state budget.

In a memo to faculty and students on Tuesday, university President Thomas Calhoun said the spring semester will end April 28, when graduation ceremonies will take place. It had been scheduled to end May 13.

“These changes are occurring to fulfill the university’s commitment to students regarding the completion of the semester,” Calhoun wrote.

Illinois moves to paperless licenses for professionals

CHICAGO – Illinois will no longer send paper renewal notices and paper licenses to professionals in a move to improve efficiency and reduce costs.

The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation announced Tuesday that paperless licensing is

CHICAGO – Cook County prosecutors have dropped an aggravated criminal sexual abuse charge against a former Chicago priest because the alleged victim stopped cooperating.

They dismissed the charge Wednesday against Daniel McCormack, who pleaded guilty to multiple child sex abuse charges in 2007 and was sentenced to five years in prison. He was removed from the priesthood.

Law book used by Lincoln obtained by museum

SPRINGFIELD – A law book used

by Abraham Lincoln has been reunited with a partner edition at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.

Officials said the book is the second of a three-volume set called “A Treatise on the Law of Evidence” by Simon Greenleaf. The library and museum owns the first volume. The whereabouts of the third remain a mystery.

The Montana Historical Society donated the book. It obtained it in 1927 from a Helena resident whose father had bought it years earlier.

The book is signed “Lincoln & Herndon” in the hand of Lincoln’s law partner, William Herndon. The firm, which later changed its name, closed in 1909.

Officials say Lincoln considered “Treatise” important, listing it as a mustread in two surviving letters to aspiring attorneys.

There’s no evidence Rubio violated Florida ethics rules. But his seat in Tallahassee, the state capital, put him in the position of advocating before a county commission that relied on lawmakers like him to fight for state money.

“I always had a problem when legislators would lobby at the county commission, because you always felt like if you didn’t vote their way, does this mean we’ll lose funds in

Tallahassee?” said Katy Sorenson, a former county commissioner and Democrat.

The commission approved the application for the plan near the Everglades, though Sorenson voted against it because it would have required moving the so-called urban development boundary, an important safeguard that protected agriculture and the local water supply. That boundary was established in the 1970s, and the county considers periodic requests to move it.

Todd Harris, a senior adviser for Rubio’s presidential campaign, told The Associated Press on Wednesday that Rubio never lobbied in the traditional sense because that was illegal under state law.

But Harris said the part-time nature of Florida’s Legislature meant that “virtually every legislator makes their living from outside employment.”

“Marco did not gain personally from this, or any other, vote because his compensation was not tied to any other specific project,” Harris wrote in response to detailed questions from the AP, noting the law firm Rubio worked for was paid a standard retainer for its work.

Rubio’s 2002 request to the county involved Pan American, a Miami company owned by well-known real estate developer Carlos C. Lopez-Cantera. He wanted to build a project – then known as Shoppyland – west of the city, but environmental critics said it was too close to an important water source.

Lopez-Cantera did not respond to detailed phone messages left with his staff at Pan American’s offices on Monday and Tuesday.

Cameras belong in courtrooms around Ill.

Half a loaf is better than none.

That was our reaction to the Illinois Supreme Court’s announcement Monday that it would adopt a permanent policy for Extended Media Coverage in circuit courts across Illinois.

In making the announcement, Chief Justice Rita B. Garman said the positive results from the four-year pilot project, which permitted news cameras in criminal courtrooms under certain circumstances, paved the way for the policy to be made permanent.

“At every level of the judicial system, we do the people’s work, and the people have an interest in observing how the judicial process functions,” Garman said in a news release.

“We are pleased with the success of the pilot project and with the great cooperation we have received from the media. It is time to make EMC more widely available.”

That sounds like unqualified good news for proponents of courtroom transparency, which we have been for many years.

Daily Chronicle journalists have been taking photos and videos and sending tweets from DeKalb County courtrooms since 2013. Rules for allowing the media in local courtrooms were devised by Presiding Judge Robbin Stuckert in collaboration with local and regional media representatives. Advance requests for cameras in courtrooms are occasionally subject to conditions, but have never been denied.

DeKalb County is among 41 counties where courtrooms, with permission of local judges, were opened to extended media coverage during the 4-year experimental stage.

Unfortunately, chief judges covering 61 other Illinois counties, including nearby Bureau, chose not to apply to the Supreme Court for the pilot program.

And unless those chief judges reconsider, people in those counties will not be able to see photos taken at trials in local courtrooms, or watch video from trials in local courtrooms, or otherwise benefit from extended media coverage from trials in local courtrooms.

That’s because the Supreme Court will not force the nine nonparticipating judicial circuits (and their 61 total counties) to allow cameras in the courtroom. That’s too bad. It is past time courts around our state were opened completely to the people they serve.

Still, we applaud: former Chief Justice Thomas Kilbride for having the courage to initiate the cameras-in-the-courtroom pilot project in January 2012.

And we applaud judges in the 15 judicial circuits, encompassing 41 counties, who bought into Kilbride’s plan and gave it a fair “trial.”

For doubting judges, we refer them to the evidence.

More than 450 media requests for extended media coverage were made in the past 4 years. Courtrooms in participating counties saw multiple instances of still and video cameras and other electronic news recording devices used during hearings and trials.

Did cameras create a circus atmosphere, deprive defendants of fair trials, or otherwise disrupt the administration of justice?

Not at all.

“There were no red flags in any of the instances,” Bethany Krajelis, a spokeswoman for the Illinois Supreme Court, said.

We encourage judges in the nine nonparticipating circuits to re-evaluate their positions based on the evidence.

In addition, as these judges face retention votes, and as new candidates for circuit judge go before the voters, we urge the public to make cameras in the courtroom an issue. Find out where judges and judicial candidates stand, and encourage them to embrace courtroom transparency.

Forty-one counties with cameras in the courtroom are better than none.

But on behalf of the cause of complete courtroom transparency, let the privilege be extended to all 102 counties.

“All work of the party’s news and public opinion media,” Xi said, “must reflect the will of the party, mirror the views of the party, preserve the authority of the party, preserve the unity of the party, and achieve love of the party, protection of the party and acting for the party.” And, he insisted, they must maintain “a high level of uniformity with the party in ideology, politics and action.”

The consequences of these attempts at thought control are already well entrenched in China: an authoritarian, paternalistic system that attempts to corral information and determine what the public can be told. It doesn’t always work in the digital age, but Chinese authorities haven’t quit trying. Xi’s declarations serve an important purpose, highlighting how China’s leadership views the news media as party handmaidens and loyal mouthpieces. In this view, there is no room for independent inquiry or questioning journalism.

At the same time, the Chinese government published new regulations that will ban foreign companies from publishing online media, games and

other content within China’s borders.

This is yet one more attempt to keep out any unwanted overseas influences. Xi seems determined to impose maximum control.

There was a time when many in the West hoped that open doors to China would let in fresh breezes of freedom. It was believed that greater trade and flows of intellectual property would bring ancillary benefits, improving conditions in human rights and democracy. It was thought that allowing China’s state news media an expanding foothold in the United States might also advance democratic values. It is past time to rethink such assumptions.

Senate has constitution on its side in Supreme Court vacancy President Barack Obama has said “the Constitution is pretty clear about what should happen now” that Justice Antonin Scalia’s death has left a vacancy on the Supreme Court.

What should happen now, he said in a news conference this week, is that he should nominate someone to fill that vacancy and then the Senate should approve or disapprove the nomination.

Republican senators have said they will not confirm any Obama nominee this year, allowing the winner of this year’s presidential election to make the choice. Obama mocked this idea: “There’s no unwritten law that says that [Supreme Court confirmations] can only be done on off years – that’s not in the constitutional text. I’m amused when I hear people who claim to be strict interpreters of the Constitution suddenly reading into it a whole series of provisions that are not there.”

Obama is battling a straw man, as is his wont. Republican senators are not contending that the Constitution bars them from confirming a nominee this year. They’re saying it allows them to hold off until next year.

Which it does. The framers considered requiring the Senate to take action to keep a nominee from being confirmed. They rejected that idea, writing a Constitution that made confirmation depend on affirmative steps by the Senate. The practical difference between

VIEWS Ramesh Ponnuru these arrangements is that under our Constitution, the Senate can kill a nomination passively, by doing nothing.

When Obama was himself a senator, he tried to block an up-or-down vote on the nomination of Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court – going against what he now says the Constitution obliges.

When this history came up at the news conference, the closest Obama came to a response was that Alito made it to the court anyway. A spokesman later said the president regrets the decision to take part in the filibuster. But if Obama wasn’t shirking his constitutional duty back then – and he wasn’t – neither are Senate Republicans now.

The fact that the Constitution allows the Senate to ignore a Supreme Court nomination does not mean it is right to do so. Chris Cillizza, in the Washington Post, suggested that Republicans are making a “big mistake” even from the standpoint of their own political interests. Instead of saying no from the beginning, he argued, they should hold hearings and then filibuster Obama’s nominee. (They could also hold hearings and then vote that nominee down.)

He speculated that Republicans would

look more reasonable this way.

How to defeat a nomination, however, is just a tactical question. The more fundamental issue is whether it’s reasonable – actually reasonable, not just reasonable-looking – to deny Obama the chance to fill this vacancy this year.

I think the answer is yes. In part that’s because, for all the convenient invocations of the Founders we have heard in this debate already, this isn’t the Founders’ Supreme Court. It’s a court that plays a much larger policy-making role than it did for much of our history. (Recall that the court in its first 70 years struck down precisely two federal laws as unconstitutional.)

Modern liberalism is aggressive in its use of judicial power to impose its policies, whether or not those preferences accord with the text or original understanding of the Constitution.

The best example of this tendency is Roe v. Wade, in which the court struck down abortion laws across the U.S. on the pretense that the Constitution somehow forbids them. Even experts on constitutional law who support legal abortion have said that Roe was a poorly reasoned decision (“it is not constitutional law and gives almost no sense of an obligation to try to be”). This anti-constitutional decision has become sacred for Democrats. Obama claims he has no litmus test, but has said that his

judicial nominees will support Roe. Judges who are willing to put their policy views over the Constitution in that manner will find it easy to do it in other cases, too: to hold that states cannot give students scholarships for private and parochial schools, or that they cannot maintain the death penalty.

When a court invalidates a law because it clearly violates the Constitution, it can justify its apparently undemocratic action on the ground that the Constitution counts as the will of the people in a more durable sense than a statute does. When it invalidates a law without that justification, its rulings lack democratic legitimacy.

Justice Scalia was one of the court’s most stalwart opponents of that kind of end run.

Replacing him with another justice who will vote in lockstep with the court’s liberal wing – which tends to vote as a bloc much more than the conservatives do – would go far to advance the project of replacing the Constitution with progressive dogma.

The Constitution gives Republicans the ability to call at least a temporary halt to this project, by keeping Obama from making another Supreme Court appointment. They’re right to take it.

SHABBONA – Long after the Indian Creek girls basketball team was knocked out last season, guard Madison Russell participated in the 3-point contest for Class 1A in Normal.

Now a senior, she’s returning to Illinois State’s Redbird Arena this week and is bringing some friends with her this time.

Behind some timely 3-pointers this postseason, Russell has helped the Timberwolves advance to the Class 1A State Tournament, where they will play defending state champion Moweaqua Central A&M at 12:15 p.m. Friday at Redbird Arena.

“When we’re in trouble, she’s calm and she takes those big shots and that’s a benefit for us,” Indian Creek sophomore guard MaKayli Vann said of Russell’s influence on the Timberwolves during the postseason run. “When I see her take those shots, I know that I should be going in to rebound, but I just run back because I know it’s going to go in.”

While she didn’t exactly shoot the lights out during the 3-point contest last season – she laughed that she only made four – Indian Creek coach Paul Muchmore said that having experience shooting in the gym could benefit his senior sharpshooter. For Russell, that limited experience is better than nothing.

“It’s kind of nice since I’ve been there last year and everything, I’ve shot there before,” she said. “Hopefully it’ll help a little bit.”

On the season, Russell is averaging 9 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.5 a game and has made a team-high 49 3s – shooting 30 percent from beyond the arc.

When Muchmore, who also heavily praised Russell’s prowess on defense, switched up the lineup this season to put Vann as the ballhandler and moved Russell off the ball, he said it helped her become a better scoring threat with her shooting.

“Madison was a good point guard, but I think it moved her into a spot where she’s even better as a shooting guard,” Muchmore said. “She struggled a little bit early in the season and she was getting frustrated in practice, we just talked her through it and she’s been slowly been shooting better ever since.

In a 42-39 win over Annawan in the Class 1A Serena Sectional Championship, the first time the Timberwolves have played in a sectional championship in school history, Russell made four 3-pointers and finished with 14 points. When the Timberwolves trailed 22-15 early in the third quarter, it was a 3-pointer by Russell that sparked a 9-0 run to give them the lead. Her next two 3-pointers – one late in the third and early in the fourth – both gave the Timberwolves the lead at the time.

“She helps us spread the floor so teams can’t focus all on the inside,” Indian Creek senior post Josie Diehl said.

“Knocking down those shots helped open up the inside for me and MaKayli.

Her shooting has come at a good time.

She’s always been a shooter, everybody knows that.”

In a 54-50 win over Galena in the Class 1A Oglesby Supersectional, Russell scored 10 points and had back-toback 3-pointers in the second quarter to give the Timberwolves their first lead of the game. She also finished with five steals – including three in the fourth quarter.

“She’s really taken advantage of defenses collapsing on Josie and she’s been hitting those shots,” Muchmore said. “She’s making them pay.”

Now Russell and the Timberwolves have the toughest test of the best season in school history. In order to play for the state championship, they’ll have to get past the No. 1 team in the state when they face Central A&M. But Russell and the Timberwolves are ready to keep the dream season alive.

“It’s going to be challenging, but it’ll be exciting for us,” she said. “To play the defending champion and No. 1 team is really awesome.”

sports@daily-chronicle.com AMBOY – Trevor Guerra’s 40 point performance in Wednesday night’s 7960 1A regional victory over the DePue Little Giants was the catalyst for an Indian Creek Timberwolves team that shot 62 percent from the floor.

But the Timeberwolves also went 37 of 45 from the free-throw line, including 28 made shots from the line by Guerra.

“I’m used to getting hacked,” said Guerra, who was sporting good number of stitches in both his lower and upper lip. “It comes and it goes, but it has been happening my whole life.”

Although the final score didn’t appear to be close, DePue worked the game to a six-point deficit twice in the fourth quarter. DePue fouled often late to try and get the ball back, as well as

getting a total of three technical fouls in the game. Two of them came on one play, resulting in Guerra shooting a total of six free throws, two for the foul, and four for two technicals on a DePue player. With all of that going on, Indian Creek coach Joe Piekarz knew he needed to keep his team even keeled.

“We knew they played a really aggressive game,” said Piekarz. “We knew that if we wanted to win, we needed to play consistent, strong basketball and be disciplined. We watched them play and we saw that they have a lot of ‘high highs’ in their game. They go on incredible runs. We knew that they would make a run and you just have to be strong and ready for it.”

DePue (18-9) made a run in the fourth quarter, anchored by sophomore Rafael Puga’s 19 points and five rebounds. Puga is part of the young core of players that has the team excit-

ed for what the future holds.

“We have the opportunity to win regionals these next few years,” said Puga. “I have faith in our team, and our sophomore class is really strong.”

DePue coach Charles Klinefelter was very animated during the game.

His emotions did get the best of him at one point, earning himself a technical foul. His team seemed to rally around their coach, getting even more aggressive when taking the ball to the hoop.

“Yeah, we got frustrated because we felt like we weren’t getting the same calls that they were getting,” said Klinefelter. “But, we came back and really rode the momentum. What I am unhappy with is soon as we did that, we took some bad fouls and got ourselves into trouble again.”

DePue’s lone senior starter, Ramon Puga, chipped in 12 points and three rebounds to help balance the load. When

asked about the future of his program, Klinefelter was very optimistic and had much to say.

“We only had one senior starter and the rest were sophomores. If we work on our defense over the summer and our guys hit the weights, we’re going to be a real good team next season.”

As for Indian Creek (19-9), they will face off against Ottawa-Marquette on Friday night. Piekarz says that the Timberwolves have a completely different animal ahead of them.

“They have some big strong kids down low. They don’t run like the team we just played, but they are big and very solid. We just need to play consistent basketball for 32 minutes. Whichever team does that will put them in the best position to win the game.”

Charles Schmitt added 11 points, two rebounds, two assists and a steal for the Timberwolves.

“From the beginning, she was aggressive and was locked in,” Northern Illinois coach Lisa Carlsen said.

“I’m really excited for her because she’s put in a lot of work.”

On the night, Lehman finished 12 for 19 from the field and 15 for 16 from the free-throw line. In fact, she scored 29 of her points in the second half – coming into the game with a career-high of 27 in a game.

“It’s an incredible feeling, but it wasn’t a solo effort,” said Lehman, who also had her 13th double-double of the season by finishing with 12 rebounds. “My teammates set me up for the shots. They made it easy for me.”

Pau Gasol, who missed practice Tuesday and was playing with the flu, narrowly missed a triple-double, finishing with 15 rebounds, 10 points and nine assists in the Bulls’ third straight victory.

Bradley Beal led the Wizards with 19 points. Garrett Temple scored 18 and Ramon Sessions and John Wall added 16. Markieff Morris had 10 rebounds for the Wizards.

The Bulls’ Derrick Rose was a last-minute scratch with right hamstring tendinitis, while their leading scorer, Jimmy Butler, missed a seventh game with a left knee strain.

Nikola Mirotic is out because of appendicitis.

Mike Dunleavy and Doug McDermott each had 14 points for the Bulls.

Aaron Brooks finished 11.

Interpreting the Bears’ coachspeak

INDIANAPOLIS – The NFL Scouting Combine can be a lot of fun because it is the only opportunity each season to visit with every head coach and general manager in the NFL. Ultimately, however, they each try to outdo the other at speaking without telling you a thing.

The best approach is to figure out each club’s offseason agenda, and then do your best interpreter act to see whether they accidentally tip their hands about anything.

I haven’t been in the Bears’ war room, but it’s a safe bet their agenda looks something like this: A. Acquire more playmakers and upgrade the talent around them, particularly on defense. B. How do we identify playmakers? C. What to do about Alshon Jeffery? D. Did our decision to ignore Matt Forte leave us with a need at running back? E. How much more Martellus Bennett can we take? F. What is the best version of Kyle Long? G. Is Jay Cutler the final answer?

Visiting with GM Ryan Pace and coach John Fox on Wednesday, each had a clear idea on the playmaker and talent riddle.

BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush “I think you’re looking for guys that are making critical game-changing plays at critical moments,” Pace said. “When the game’s on the line and it’s in the fourth quarter, you look at how close all of our games were and all of the games around the league and there’s certain players that step up at those moments.”

Fox thinks he knows how to identify those guys.

“Team speed. Explosion,” he said.

“I think it’s just getting the right kind of guys there, but with a highlight on some athleticism and explosion.”

Pace refused to tip his hand on where the Bears are at with Jeffery.

“We’re actively and aggressively negotiating right now,” Pace said. “We understand the deadline is Tuesday for the franchise tag. That’s an option.

We have until Tuesday to make that decision, but right now that’s kind of ongoing.”

He is, however, unimpressed by

“I’ve heard that,” Pace said. “I sense he wants to be here. We’re the team that drafted him. He loves the city of Chicago. He’s comfortable in the offense, and I sense that he wants to be here.”

Fox made a great point relative to the Bears’ depth at running back and their needs on defense.

“The thing that sometimes I think people get lost about is the improvement of that player from a freshman to a sophomore, from Year 1 to Year 2, whether it’s in a particular system or just in NFL football,” he said. “There are a lot of things that go into the preparation in being the best, how to do it, as far as film study, opponent study that these guys will just take off

in my experience from Year 1 to Year 2.”

The Bears continue to be tightlipped and poker-faced relative to Bennett.

“I talked to him right at the end of the season,” Pace said. “I haven’t talked to him recently. Really with him, he’s under contract. We have a lot of players that aren’t under contract, so that’s where our focus is right now.”

Finally, for all of those who’ve asked if there’s any chance the Bears use that 11th pick on the quarterback of the future, consider these thoughts from Fox: “[Cutler] was probably one of the brightest spots, I think, about our first year in Chicago and getting to know our players,” Fox said. “I was very, very pleased with what I saw and what we have to work with going forward.”

Bears ‘aggressively’ negotiating with Jeffery

kfishbain@chicagofootball.com INDIANAPOLIS – Ryan Pace said the Bears are “actively and aggressively negotiating right now” with receiver Alshon Jeffery.

Jeffery’s contract expires March 9, and the Bears have until Tuesday to use the franchise tag. The general manager said the tag is an option that “is still on the table.”

In his contract year, Jeffery missed seven games because of injuries along with the entire preseason. He had 54 catches for 807 yards and four touchdowns. Pace is confident that if Jeffery stays with the club that they’ll have a good plan for him from a physical standpoint.

“The thing about it is the previous two years, he remained healthy,” Pace said. “Last year, he had a series of injuries. I think we’ve got a great sports team around him with Jen (Gibson) and Nate (Breske) and Jason George.

“I’ve said this before: I think being in Year 2 with a player helps a lot, just understanding his body and his body mechanics. I know him and his agent are doing some things, too, to improve on that. When he gets back, we’ll have

Jeffery is training at Unbreakable Performance Center, where other NFL players have worked with Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer, a friend of Fox’s.

“I think what they’ve done there in LA is kind of a new concept, a little more of the mental training as well as the physical,” Fox said, mentioning that Jeffery’s work there is voluntary.

“It’s been more of a growing topic as of recently,” he said.

“Suicide has always been around but not a lot of people think it’s as big of an issue as it is. ... I think people are kind of afraid to talk about it, because they don’t know how to talk about it.”

He also said the topic of suicide is somewhat taboo and people think that it’s never going to happen to them – which is why it’s so hard when someone close to them takes their life.

“It’s good to know there are organizations out there like Project Seth that are willing to make people aware of the situation,” he said.

NIU Theatre presents ‘The Lucky Chance’ DAILY CHRONICLE The Northern Illinois University School of Theatre and Dance upcoming Mainstage Series production is a Restoration comedy about three young women who find ways to bypass the rules of courtship and marriage.

Opening Feb. 25, “The Lucky Chance,” by Aphra Behn, is the story of three friends – one women already married, and two others about to be purchased for marriage by two rich older men. The women unite to end this tradition of marital servitude by whatever creative tricks and ploys they can muster.

Although written in 1686, Behn’s classic play has been reimagined by its director, Stanton Davis, by a leap across time from the high style of the English Restoration to the sights and sounds of the London “clubbing scene” of 1968.

Davis’s vision is intended to reflect how both the English Restoration and the cultural revolution of the 1960s contained parallel issues related to sexuality, rebellion, freedom and expression.

“This was what the 1960s and the English Restoration were all about,” Davis said in a news release.

“It’s about young people having control of their lives,” Davis said in the release. “Aphra Behn especially represents that, being the first professional female playwright in history.

The music of the 1960s has a large influence on the production. There is even a live band performing the hits of late 1960s UK bands, including the Bee Gees, Donovan, T-Rex, Slade, and even the late David Bowie.

To complete the era’s psychedelic setting, set designer Pauline Oleksy plans to use image projections and special lighting effects.

“The Lucky Chance” curtain times are 7:30 p.m. weekdays and Saturdays, and 2 p.m. on Sunday and second Saturday Feb. 25 through March 5 in the Huntley Middle School auditorium, 1515 S. First St., DeKalb.

School of dance to perform ‘Annie’ DAILY CHRONICLE The Beth Fowler School of Dance of Genoa and St. Charles will bring a new production to the stage of DeKalb’s Egyptian Theatre on March 4, 5 and 6 when it performs a musical theater ballet of “Annie.”

Annie was raised in an orphanage, but events lead her to Daddy Warbucks’ home and many new adventures.

“We have formerly performed excerpts from ‘Annie,’ but this year we are excited to bring the storyline to live theater with many new scenes,” director Beth Fowler said in a news release. “We are using the soundtrack from the movie, which features many familiar favorite songs.

“I was inspired by the dancing and acrobatics in the classic movie. Our dancers and staff are very excited we are able to incorporate the tumbling as well as the dancing as seen in the movie through our new acrobatics

program we started at our dance studio two years ago,” she said in the release.

The role of Annie will be performed by Hannah Fugiel of Elgin; Phil Masterton of Rockford is Daddy Warbucks; Anna Nolazco of West Chicago is Grace, Daddy Warbucks’ secretary; and Miss Hannigan will be performed

by Beth Fowler.

The Beth Fowler Dance Company will open the show with highlights from the Spanish ballet “Paquita.”

Performances will be at 7 p.m. March 4 and 5 and 2 p.m. March 5 and 6.

Special Consensus Bluegrass Band coming to Sandwich DAILY CHRONICLE The Special Consensus Bluegrass Band will perform at 8 p.m.

March 5 at the Sandwich Opera House.

Formed in the Chicago area in 1975, The Special Consensus is a four-person acoustic bluegrass band with a repertoire that features traditional bluegrass standards, original compositions by band members and professional songwriters, and songs from other musical genres performed in the bluegrass format.

The band has released 17 recordings and has appeared on numerous National Public Radio programs and cable television shows, including The Nashville Network and the Grand Ole Opry at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. Special Consensus was proud to celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2015.

Band leader/banjo player Greg Cahill is the former president and board chairman of the Nashville-based International Bluegrass Music Association and the former board chair of the Foundation for Bluegrass Music. He was awarded the IBMA Distinguished Achievement Award in 2011. The band’s 2012 release “Scratch Gravel Road” was Grammy nominated for Best Bluegrass Album. Other band members include mandolin player Rick Faris, guitarist Dustin Benson and bass player Dan Eubanks.

Don’t be fooled by the title. “Sex Please We’re Sixty!” is a very clean, comedic farce written by Michael and Susan Parker and directed by Matt Johnson and Kari Frantzen.

However, it is a more adult-type show full of lots of laughs and fun for audience and cast.

Mrs. Stancliffe’s Rose Cottage Bed & Breakfast has been successful for many years.

Her guests (nearly all women) return year after year. Her next-door neighbor, the elderly, silver-tongued, Bud “the Stud” Davis (played

by Tom Merkel) believes they come to spend time with him in romantic liaisons. The prim and proper Mrs. Stancliffe (played by Sharon Pagoria) steadfastly denies this, but really doesn’t do anything to prevent it.

She reluctantly accepts the fact that “Bud the Stud” is, in fact, good for business. Her

other neighbor and would-be suitor Henry Mitchell (played by Matt Frantzen) is a retired chemist who has developed a blue pill called “Venusia,” after Venus the goddess of love, to increase the libido of menopausal women. The pill has not been tested.

Add to the guest list three older women: Victoria Ambrose (Kathie Hart), a romance novelist whose personal life seems to be lacking in romance; Hillary Hudson (now being played by Kari Frantzen), a friend of Henry’s who has agreed to test the Venusia, and Charmaine Beauregard (Connie Cline), a “Southern Belle” whose libido does not need to be increased.

Bud gets his hands on some of the “Venusia” pills and the fun begins, as he attempts to entertain all three women! The women mix up Bud’s “Viagra” pills with the “Venusia,” and we soon discover that it has a strange effect on men: it gives them all the symptoms of menopausal women, complete with hot flashes, mood swings, weeping and irritability. When the mayhem settles down, all the women find their lives moving in new and surprising directions.

Six talented young musicians – recipients of talent scholarships awarded by the Northern Illinois University Community School of the Arts – will perform Saturday on campus.

The annual Honors Recital begins at 1:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall of the Music Building at NIU. The concert is free and open to the public, and the auditorium is accessible to all.

Auditions for these six coveted awards are held in January each year, when the young musicians play their pieces from memory before a team of three judges. Each winner receives $250.

The Community School of the Arts

has awarded 120 talent scholarships to young musicians in the community since 1996. The money for these awards comes from the community school’s scholarship fund.

Ranging in age from 10 to 16, this year’s winners are from DeKalb, Sycamore, Somonauk and Aurora. They will perform works by Vivaldi, Seitz, Goltermann, Rachmaninoff and Veracini.

Websites offer doctor ratings Dear Dr. K: I’ve recently moved and would like to find a doctor for my kids and myself. I don’t know many people here yet, so I’ve hesitated to ask for personal recommendations. What do you think about physician-rating websites?

Dear Reader: There are a lot of doctorrating sites out there, like Healthgrades. com or RateMDs.com. Even websites that offer reviews of restaurants and repairmen (such as Yelp and Angie’s List) feature critiques of doctors, dentists and other clinicians.

Many of these sites have users give doctors a “star rating,” as you would rate a movie on Netflix. But according to a recent article in the New England Journal of Medicine, narrative reviews, in which patients describe their experiences with clinicians in their own words, can add valuable context. They can allow readers to zero in on reviews from people with similar problems, needs and preferences. And if you understand why someone gave a clinician a certain score, you can weigh that information against what’s most important to you.

But even doctor-rating websites that provide space for personal comments – and many do – could, in my opinion, be improved. Many of these websites don’t present data on other important considerations. For example, does the doctor offer timely appointments? Does he or she follow authoritative guidelines for preventing and treating diseases? Do they follow up on recently discovered medical problems that need close monitoring?

In addition, most of the existing websites post comments from any source. There’s no assurance the reviews come from real or recent patients. Furthermore, the vast majority of doctors’ patients don’t offer their evaluations on doctor-rating websites. And the few

Also in my opinion, there are a few doctors who have a great “bedside manner” but don’t practice the best medicine.

They order too many, or too few, diagnostic tests. They use the newest treatments when older treatments would be equally effective, less expensive and possibly safer. I say older drugs are safer because we know more about the safety of drugs that have been around for a while. Having said this, I think patients usually make accurate judgments about their doctors.

So what’s the bottom line? Doctor-rating websites might provide some useful information. But don’t use them as your only source of information. If you can, ask trusted friends or family members. If you’re new to an area, as you are in this case, join a neighborhood email group and ask for a recommendation. Or call the local chapter of a condition-specific association and ask them for suggestions.

Of course, it makes the most sense to trust the judgments of people whom you know and respect. But you can learn something from people you don’t know, and who might be anonymous on the ratings website.

All the time, we hear people we don’t know making judgments about things. We decide from what they’ve said and how they’ve said it whether we believe them. It’s no different with doctor-rating websites.

Dear Abby: DEAR ABBY Why is there so much angst today Jeanne over raising chilPhillips dren, especially in young mothers? I don’t remember my mother or my friends’ mothers being so concerned about whether or not they were doing a good job, and I certainly didn’t gather with my daughters’ friends’ moms to bemoan whether I was a bad mother.

Now there are all these blogs and workshops, etc. on how to be the “best” mom, and all these lifestyle gurus who constantly tell them not to worry, they’re doing a great job. It just seems like a bunch of nonsense to me.

I think it’s because a generation or so back, moms began to elevate their children to top priority in the family over their husbands. What’s your take? – Puzzled Grandma In The South Dear Puzzled: The world is different today.

Many women feel torn because they want or need to work, while at the same time feel pressured to help their children succeed in an increasingly competitive world.

While it might seem like nonsense to you, I assure you it does not seem like nonsense to them. Women of your generation didn’t second-guess themselves because parenting a generation ago was simpler. If children seem to be the No. 1 priority these days it might be because both parents feel driven to succeed and are determined their children will, too.

Dear Abby: I have been married to my husband for 11 years. We are financially and emotionally stable. We recently became friendly with another couple who are newly married and not as financially secure as we are.

When we go on vacation, they invite themselves along and assume they are staying in our travel trailer without asking. They don’t offer to help pay for gas. The last trip we took, the wife cooked only one meal, while I prepared the rest for a three-day trip.

We don’t mind sharing what we have and helping our friends out, but what we are starting to resent is the assumption because we make more money, we’ll pick up the tab for everything. Are we wrong to feel this way? –
