POLL Mason ready to hit the airwaves YESTERDAY’S RESULTS Jim Mason is launching a weekly radio show this week, and I expect he’ll get a rise out of some people.

“Jim Mason’s Inconvenient Truth” is set to air from 9:10 to 9:40 a.m. Thursday on WLBKAM 1360 and FM 98.9. Yes, it is strikingly similar to the global warming documentary about Al Gore. No, Gore and Mason don’t agree on the subject.

Mason’s suited to radio. Rarely at a loss for words, he’s got opinions about city government, local schools, national politics. Mason came to DeKalb in 1964 and has been in business here since 1967. His rental property business, Mason Properties, is the sixth-largest property taxpayer in DeKalb.

One of the things I like about Mason is that he gets excited about the things he does, whether it’s building a new laundromat or preparing to launch a radio show.

He also expresses his opinions point-blank, and he doesn’t apologize if you don’t like them. He’s a Donald Trump fan, and his style is somewhat reminiscent of Trump.

“The truth will set you free, and if you can’t prove that I’m wrong, then shut up,” Mason said. “I’m going to be tough.”

At budget crisis town hall, stakeholders fret jobs, grants, school’s future

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – With news of some colleges and universities cutting staff and even being on the brink of bankruptcy as the state’s budget impasse nears nine months, Northern Illinois University officials tried to reassure some of its stakeholders Tuesday that the university is OK – for now.

“We’re still locked into an epic battle right now. An epic battle between a governor that wants to reform the way Illinois is governed, and a Legislature that wants to do things differently than the governor,” NIU President Doug Baker said. “And so higher education and many of the human services are kind of caught in this crossfire.”

Students, faculty and staff filled the Regency Room at the Holmes Student Center where Baker facilitated a town hall meeting. Students expressed concern over Monetary Award Program funding; faculty members wanted to know if they’d still have jobs and others were concerned with the overall effect of the budget impasse on the university.

But Baker and some members of his Cabinet told the attendees that NIU’s story is different from what’s going on at Chicago State University, which has declared a kind of fiscal state of emergency, or at Eastern Illinois University, which is preparing to lay off employees, or even at Kishwaukee Community College.

Kishwaukee College, which is 5 miles west of NIU’s campus, and which serves as a feeder for the university, announced last week that it would be cutting 17 percent of its workforce.

“We are not in the same category as some of the other institutions that are struggling,” said Al Phillips, vice president of administration and finance. “We have sufficient funds to get through the summer, to get through the fall semester and into the spring.”

But officials cautioned that the approach won’t hold up in the long term, and the university will need its state funding.

“We’ve deferred maintenance, we’ve deferred purchasing, we’ve deferred new programs,” Baker said.

NIU freshman Emily Packer said she has anxiety over MAP funding. She said without that and other funding, she may not be able to return to NIU

next fall.

“I work a part-time job here at school just to pay the tuition and costs that the school doesn’t cover,” said Packer, who is from Cary. And without the MAP grant and without the extra funding that the school might not pay with the budget, I don’t know if I’m going to be able to come back next year.”

In fiscal 2015, NIU received $91 million in state aid, with a budget of about $425 million. The school anticipated receiving $63 million this school year in a $389 million budget, but to date has received no state funding. Additionally, NIU is waiting to find out when it

may be reimbursed about $20 million it fronted for students who expected to receive MAP grants this school year.

Still, the town hall touched on more positive things that the university is working on. Provost Lisa Freeman gave an update on the program prioritization initiative that was started last year.

Chief Diversity Officer Vernese Edghill-Walden announced that NIU would be looking to start an interfaith commission. She added that a series of community dialogues would kick off next month, with the First Amendment as the first topic.

County school leaders talk taxes Funding proposal would add extra 1 percent to sales tax

DeKALB – School officials throughout DeKalb County are considering trying to implement a sales tax that could tack on an extra 1 percent in sales tax on county sales and bring in millions to address payment on construction bonds and capital projects.

The county school facility tax can go up to 1 percent, implemented in quarter increments on all products sold, with the exception of a few things such as cars, boats, aircraft, some foods, drugs and medical supplies and farm equipment.

School districts with 51 percent of the enrollment in the county would have to be on board with the plan to move forward with a referendum question, which has to be issued to the Regional Office of Education. Voters would have to approve the sales tax on the ballot, financial analyst Elizabeth Hennessy said.

Schools would only be able to use the generated revenue on capital projects, so it wouldn’t go to things such as payroll, she said.

“I think this is a fabulous option,” Hennessy said. “But obviously you have to get the other school districts on board and the voters on board.”

Restructuring options could cost the district millions in the long term. Options include stretching the debt out for decades.

District officials considered the sales tax proposal in 2014, but most school board members didn’t show enough interest in the plan to get it off the ground. The proposed increase could bring DeKalb School District 428 $5.9 million annually.

Districts with smaller enrollment seemed in favor of the new tax.

Hiawatha School District 426 Board President Ryan Block said he attended a meeting on the proposal last fall, but the matter hasn’t come before the full board. Another meeting for district leaders is scheduled for Feb. 25. Block said he plans to attend to learn more about the sales tax and what it would mean for District 426 and its taxpayers. The proposed tax could bring the district an estimated $591,217 – nearly 11 percent of its $6.4 million spending in the fiscal

2016 budget.

“In theory it sounds great – every school district wants extra funds, but we have to keep taxpayers in mind,” Block said. “We don’t want to do anything that would hurt our taxpayers.”

In Sandwich, school officials support the plan, District 430 Superintendent Rick Schmitt said.

About half of the district’s roughly 2,100 students live in DeKalb County, Schmitt said, which could mean Sandwich schools could receive about $1 million a year if the sales tax were instituted.

That money would be a lifeline for a district with aging infrastructure and limited bonding authority, Schmitt said.

In Somonauk, District 432 Superintendent Jay Streicher said officials were in a wait-and-see mode. Streicher said he and school board President

Thomas Nielsen attended an informational meeting on a possible sales tax in December.

“We take a lot of money right out of the pockets of our residents right now through property taxes,” Streicher said. “So I think you have to be very cognizant of that.”

About 30 percent of the roughly 800 children attending Somonauk schools are DeKalb County residents, so the district wouldn’t benefit as much as some others, Streicher said.

Joe Burgess, superintendent of Genoa-Kingston School District 424, said the tax could be “a real positive thing for schools” at a time when state funding for districts has be declining. However, he said the tax is to be successful, the sales tax would need widespread support.

“Everybody would need to have a real good idea about what each district plans to do with the one percent,” he said.

If put to a referendum, Burgess said, the Genoa-Kingston School School Board would look at all available options and get feedback from residents before moving forward. At this point, the district’s board hasn’t taken a position on the issue.

Ronald “Ron” A. Forster died peacefully at his home on February 12, 2016, in Polo, Illinois, at the age of 63.

After the war he bought his home on Oak St. in Hinckley, married Myrtie Dayton of Kaneville, and started his own welding and body shop. Years later, he was employed as a master welder with Caterpillar. Joe was a member of the Methodist church.

He sang in the choir, was an avid softball fan, and a baseball umpire. He shared his brother’s interest in American Western history and traveled along to research General Custer’s story.

He is survived by his brother, Pete (Joyce) Podschwit of Aurora; sisters, Alice (the late Donald) LaSanska of Niles and Judy (Kenny) Bushnell of Hinckley; children, Marlon Podschwit of DeKalb, Joan Lawson of Batavia and Lindsey (Michelle) Podschwit of Maple Park; dear friend, Aubrieta Hope of DeKalb. He will be greatly missed by his loving grandchildren, Bradley Lawson, Greta (David) Abel, Megan (Mike) Bastian, Eric Martin and great-grandchildren.

news@daily-chronicle.com CSA Sinfonia 2015 Concerto Competition winner, violinist Steven Song, will join the CSA Youth Sinfonia to perform “Violin Concerto in D Minor” by Jean Sibelius today at Boutell Memorial Concert Hall in the Northern Illinois University Music Building.

The concert has a start time of 8 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

Song, 16, is a scholarship recipient at the Music Institute of Chicago Academy program. He currently studies with Gerardo Ribeiro and previously studied with Jin Zhang for seven years. Song has received awards from competitions such as the Geneva Granquist Music Competition, the Walgreens National Concerto Competition, the DePaul Concerto Festival, and the Society of American Musicians competition. He also participated in the Fischoff Na-

tional Chamber Music Competition.

Song has long been a part of the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras and has attended the Meadowmount School of Music on merit scholarship. He has played in masterclass for James Ehnes, William van der Sloot, Tong Wei Dong, Frank Almond, Ilya Kaler, Gudny Gudmundsdottir, Joseph Silverstein, and Noah Bendix-Balgley.

In addition to violin, he has studied piano for many years, appearing once on WFMT 98.7 and placing in the Steinway Piano Competition.

Police: DeKalb man caught while climbing out window

ksmith@shawmedia.com DeKALB – A man remained in the DeKalb County Jail on Tuesday after police said he tried to escape arrest by climbing out a second-story window.

DeKalb police went to the home of Octavion McCraig-Thomas, 30, in the 1000 block of West Hillcrest Drive, DeKalb, about 5:30 p.m. Sunday to arrest him on a warrant for domestic battery.

When officers arrived, they saw McCraig-Thomas’ roommate, Quincy Pettis, 30, leaving the apartment, according to a news release. Pettis was wanted on a warrant for failing to appear in court.

Officers then saw McCraig-Thomas climbing out the second-story window of the apartment, according to the news release.

During a search, police found 19 bags of marijuana, a large amount of money, and a Ruder .380-caliber pistol in McCraig-Thomas’ coat pocket. The bags contained less than an ounce of

marijuana total and the gun had previously been reported stolen, court records show.

McCraig-Thomas is charged with possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana with intent to deliver, possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of a stolen firearm, armed violence, possession of a firearm without a FOID card, illegal possession of ammunition without a FOID card, domestic battery, and interference with the reporting of a domestic battery.

Octavion The most serious McCraigcharge, armed violence, Thomas is a Class X felony, punishable by six to 30 years in prison. His bond is set at $250,000, meaning he must post $25,000 bail to be released. He is next scheduled in court March 18.

DeKALB – Time is running out for residents to voice their opinions to the federal government about the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation’s plan to bring a 24-hour bingo hall to the area.

The U.S. Department of Interior’s Bureau of Indian Affairs is in the process of crafting an environmental impact study and an impact statement on the tribe’s plans to bring Class II gaming to the area.

The Nation owns 129 acres of land near Shabbona and wants to have the federal government hold it in trust.

The tribe plans to build a 24-hour bingo hall and other development on the land.

Last month, the bureau held a public forum where people voiced support and opposition to the gaming project. The federal representatives said they would use the information to gauge what benefits or distress the gambling hall would have on Shabbona and the region.

Rauner to detail next budget plan

CHICAGO – The Democrats vying for a chance to replace U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk pressed the Illinois Republican on Tuesday to take a definitive position on who should choose a replacement for the late U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.

The three Democratic candidates in next month’s primary – U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth, former Chicago Urban League CEO Andrea Zopp and state Sen. Napoleon Harris – said during a live-streamed Chicago Sun-Times endorsement session that the nomination process should begin immediately under President Barack Obama.

“It tugs at the democracy of our nation to not have this justice appoint-

ed,” Harris said.

Scalia’s death on Saturday triggered political debates nationwide, but the issue is especially tricky for Kirk, who is one of most vulnerable Republican senators in the 2016 election and seeking a second term in Obama’s home state.

As other Senate Republicans in tight contests lined up behind the idea that Obama’s successor should nominate Scalia’s replacement, Kirk shied away from the issue.

“The political debate erupting about prospective nominees to fill the vacancy is unseemly,” Kirk said in a statement released by his campaign Tuesday, “let us take the time to honor his life before the inevitable debate erupts.”

He didn’t elaborate on when he would take a position.

The funeral for the 79-year-old Scalia is scheduled for Saturday. His casket will be on public view in the U.S. Supreme Court’s Great Hall on Friday.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky has said the winner of the presidency in November, should fill the vacancy. GOP incumbents facing tough races in other states, including Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, New Hampshire and Ohio, have followed suit.

But Obama has said it’s his constitutional duty and Democrats have said that denying Obama the chance to pick a replacement would be an unprecedented step.

Zopp, a Harvard Law School graduate, said that no matter who picks the nominee, there’s no guarantee of how a new justice would evaluate cases –

and jurists’ views can evolve. She said for Republicans to hold up the process now would be a mistake.

“It is so typical of the challenges that we have in Washington,” she said.

Duckworth said the fact that Kirk had not weighed in on the replacement process was “a disservice” to the public.

The candidates also briefly touched on gun violence and how the U.S. should deal with the Islamic State during the endorsement session. They are scheduled to participate in a debate Friday evening hosted by Chicago’s WLS-TV. The winner of the March 15 primary is likely to face Kirk, who’s considered a heavy favorite to win a GOP primary against lesser known candidate James Marter, a businessman.

BEAUFORT, S.C. – Ted Cruz is getting hammered by his Republican rivals over what they call a pattern of unethical campaign tactics and inaccurate statements by the Texas senator who has shaped his White House bid around trust.

Cruz has had some trouble getting all his facts straight in debates, has used campaign tactics that some find suspicious and had an ad by an outside group temporarily pulled for questions about its accuracy. His opponents are blunter, calling him simply a liar.

In Lebanon, the leader of Hezbollah said Turkey and Saudi Arabia are using the fight against IS as a “pretext” to launch a ground operation in Syria.

Both countries are ready to start a regional and international war because of defeats suffered by rebels they support, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah said, addressing supporters in Beirut via satellite link from his hideout elsewhere in the city. Standoff turns predictions into reality

Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner will deliver his 2017 budget address to state lawmakers in Springfield today, an odd situation considering they have yet to approve a budget for this year.

During and after Rauner’s budget address last year, both parties staked out their positions with dire warnings about the consequences if their opponents prevailed. Then, through their inability to compromise, they made them all come true.

In pitching his budget plan to the Democrat-controlled Legislature in February 2015, Rauner said it could put an end to “irresponsible and reckless practices of the past.”

Instead, the two sides’ failure to pass a budget has taken Illinois down a financial rabbit hole in what almost certainly will be the most financially irresponsible period in Illinois history. Consent decrees and court orders have the state spending more than it is collecting in taxes, with the backlog of unpaid bills now up to $7 billion.

It’s pension system remains the worst in the nation, with more than $110 billion in unfunded liability.

Democrats criticized Rauner for putting our state’s most vulnerable at risk, treating them like burdens.

By failing to reach an agreement, Democrats have helped cause permanent damage to social service providers that serve the very people they claimed to be defending.

Rauner’s proposal last year included a 31 percent reduction in state aid to Northern Illinois University and similar aid cuts to other Illinois public colleges and universities.

Without a budget, it’s been a 100 percent reduction – aid for higher education has not been paid out in the absence of a budget, and at least one school, Chicago State University, has said it will not be able to meet payroll after March.

Meanwhile, students are doubting the state’s commitment to keeping the doors open at public colleges and universities, and are opting to leave the state in even greater numbers.

The situation is beginning to cause damage that will be irreparable, as NIU President Doug Baker said during a unity meeting at the university’s Barsema Center last week.

There is little to say that hasn’t already been said: This crisis is self-inflicted and unacceptable. We can no longer accept the same stock answers from our local representatives and those leading state government. Through our leaders’ inability to work together, we are hurting ourselves and our state.

It’s up to all of us to keep repeating this until something is accomplished.

“Are you anti-abortion?”

As I was fumbling with my answer, my colleague reminded me that she, too, is pro-choice. But in the same breath, she noted that one of her kids is expecting and even when the baby was only a zygote, her feeling was, “That’s still my grandchild.” In other words, she already loves it.

That resonated with me. How many baby bumps – wife, daughter, daughter-in-law – have I put my ear to or touched in awe, wondering who this new person will turn out to be and what things she will bring into life?

Baby love is not exclusive to pro-life people. Nor, for that matter, is being “pro-life.” The most ardent

proponent of abortion rights favors life, after all, if only because he or she has one. So the very language of the debate creates false distance.

The iconography does, too. In recent years, abortion foes have taken to brandishing gruesome placards of dismembered fetuses to make their point. Those things never come close to persuading me. They never leave me feeling anything but angry and assaulted.

The most effective anti-abortion placard I ever saw took a different approach, a tacit appeal to shared humanity and common conscience.

It said simply: “Abortion stops a beating heart.”

Boom. There you go. No need of weighty, philosophic discussions about the soul or when life begins.

I wanted to reject that sign the way you reflexively reject anything that doesn’t agree with you, but I never could.

Decades later, it is still with me. I think maybe that’s because even on so heated an issue as this, it conceded – indeed, banked upon – my humanity. There’s a lesson in that.

I am pro-choice because I think a

woman should have the ultimate say over her own body, period. I am prochoice because I don’t want to see pregnant women drinking whiskey laced with gunpowder or sticking knitting needles in their uteruses.

I am pro-choice because I abhor the idea of some harried mother who can’t feed or clothe the children she has being sent to prison (death row?) for ending a pregnancy.

But my colleague’s question reminded me that, for all we pretend otherwise, this issue is not and never has been stark or either/or.

And that the diametrical opposition we hear so much about rises from headlines and political speeches, but not so much from life.

“Are you anti-abortion?” my colleague asked.

My realization and my words were simultaneous. “Yes,” I said, “I guess I am.”

Formula for school funding 30 years out of sync Illinois’ school funding formula is out of whack because state lawmakers have failed to update it for nearly 30 years and because Illinois is so heavily dependent upon property taxes for school funding.

Property taxes are so high because lawmakers have also failed to provide the major share of school funding as called for in the state’s constitution.

Let’s call that chicken-and-egg scenario No. 1.

Illinois House Speaker Mike Madigan, Senate President John Cullerton, Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner and lawmakers of both political parties all say they need to revamp the school funding formula. Some say they cannot do that without more money, and there won’t be

more money until Rauner gets some of his reforms that Democrats refuse to consider and both agree to a new state budget – now 227 days late.

Let’s call that chicken-and-egg scenario No. 2.

Now add the elections and lawmakers fearing backlash from any school formula that robs from the rich to give to the poor. They will gain political capital by saying they plan to move fast, but in reality they will do nothing until after voters return them to their comfy seats in the statehouse.

Let’s just call that the chicken scenario.

Illinois leads the nation in the funding gap between rich and poor school districts, according to an analysis by the Education Trust. In

fact with a nearly 20 percent funding gap, Illinois has nearly double the inequity of the next-worst state, New York.

While Rauner and others decry taking from one student to benefit another, the reality is that it costs more to educate a poor urban or a poor rural student. The state must fix its finances so that schools don’t continue balancing budgets by going to property taxpayers who see their burden amplified as municipalities strip away those taxes with tax increment financing for possible commercial development.

East St. Louis District 189 has been receiving U.S. Department of Education funding in the form of School Improvement Grants to the tune of $21.8 million. Trouble is, that

money is temporary with the high school grant ending this summer and only four of the district’s 12 schools being targeted.

The money has made an incremental difference, but how fair is it that your child be denied a better chance at academic success just because a neighboring school is worse? How wise is it to create hope and expect the effort to be sustained without the added resources?

Systemic problems need more than lip service and spot treatment.

Lawmakers need to fix the school funding formula, and should be brave enough to do so before November elections rather than handing Illinois children yet another year in which where they live determines the quality of their public education.

“Are you anti-abortion?”

That question, from a colleague, caught me by surprise. After all, she knows I’ve written a number of prochoice columns.

“I know you’re pro-choice,” she added, reading my mind. “But I was wondering if you’re anti-abortion.”

I knew where this was coming from. She had just finished reading the first draft of my next novel, a World War II epic in which a character wrestles with whether to abort the child of a man who brutally raped her.

I reminded my colleague not to confuse the character’s opinion with mine. One reason you write fiction is to put yourself into the minds of people who are not like you.

Still, her question intrigued me because it suggested a seldom-heard perspective, a third way, if you will, in the eternal battle between prochoice and pro-life.

We are taught that there are those two ways only. Indeed, where abortion is concerned, that’s the fundament of every policy debate and political speech. But it seems ever clearer to me that it’s a false dichoto-

Today, the name Tiffany may mean leaded glass lamps or a jewelry store started by Charles Tiffany. But the name Tiffany is on many different types of art. In 1893, Arthur Nash moved from England with his sons to work at the Tiffany Glass Works in Corona, New York. Arthur developed many special types of glass for Tiffany, including the famous iridescent Favrile. The factory history gets complicated. Tiffany added a foundry, survived the rationing of the war years, and started making new designs for metal work in 1921 under Arthur’s son, A. Douglas Nash (1885-c.1940). And in 1928, Tiffany Furnaces became A. Douglas Nash Corporation. Nash continued to make enameled metal pieces, including cigar boxes, picture frames, ashtrays and desk sets, in designs similar to but simpler than earlier Tiffany pieces. In 1932 the company closed, and A. Douglas Nash went to work for Libbey Glass and the Pittsburgh Glass Co. He died in 1940. Some pieces marked with the Nash company name are appearing at auctions and shops. A bronze box with a colorful enameled landscape set in the top was sold at a 2015 Skinner auction in Boston for $1,353, five times estimate. Did the bidders know that Nash was the famous glass maker who worked for Louis Comfort Tiffany? Or were they collectors of artistic 20th-century enameled metal, a collecting field that still is

not well-known? *** Q: I have a glass hatchet from the St. Louis World’s Fair. It’s 7 1/2 inches long and has a picture of George Washington and “The Father of our Country” on one side of the blade and “World’s Fair, 1904” on the other side. What is it worth?

A: The first glass hatchets with Washington’s portrait were made

by Libbey Glass Co. for the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. The words “Libbey Glass Co. Toledo, Ohio” are embossed on the handle. Your hatchet, made for the 1904 World’s Fair, doesn’t have the name of the company on the handle, so it probably was made by another manufacturer. At least five different glass hatchets were made as souvenirs for the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair.

Glass hatchets were made as souvenirs of several cities and events through the 1920s. Some have a person’s name engraved on the handle. Glass hatchets are often found for about $25-$35. *** Q: I went to a charity auction in the spring of 1960 that raised funds for a community project. Senator John F. Kennedy was asked to make a donation. He contributed a white handkerchief with the initial “K” embroidered in one corner and his name scrawled alongside it.

A: Almost all political items are collectible. William Jennings Bryan was the Democratic party’s nominee for president in 1896, 1900 and 1908. Memorabilia from his campaigns is among the most popular with collectors and some items bring high prices. Several different badges were made for delegates to the 1908 Democratic convention. One showing Bryan on the front and Fairview, his home in Lincoln, Nebraska, sold for $75. A ribbon badge with a silver bar pin with the word “Delegate” on it at the top at the top and a celluloid button picturing Bryan and ears of corn on a red, white and blue “flag” ribbon sold for $835 a few years ago. A very rare badge for members of the Lincoln Bryan Club in Lincoln, Nebraska, recently sold for $2,375. *** Q: We have a gallon whiskey jug that has a brown top with writing on it, Part of it says “Italian Swiss Galaxy Wine House, Whallen Bros., Wine, Whiskey, Brandy & Gin, 217221 W. Huskies to make announcement at U.S. Cellular Field

sports@daily-chronicle.com Northern Illinois announced it will be holding a news conference at 10:30 a.m. today at U.S. Cellular Field.

The news conference will give an announcement regarding the 2016 NIU football schedule and will feature athletic director Sean Frazier and football coach Rod Carey, Illinois Sports Facilities Authority CEO Lou Bertuca and White Sox Senior Vice President Brooks Boyer.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported in September that the Huskies would play a game at U.S. Cellular Field in the 2016 season, which Frazier strongly denied at the time.

“We have no idea where this report came from,” Frazier said Sept. 24. “And we are no closer to signing a deal with U.S. Cellular Field than we are to winning a national championship this year.”

Since 2007, the Huskies have played in a professional venue on three occasions during the regular season – Soldier Field each time. They have lost all three games – 16-3 to Iowa in 2007, 49-7 to Wisconsin in 2011 and 18-17 to Iowa in 2012.

During the Huskies’ fivegame losing streak – which was snapped when Montgomery inserted Wilson into the starting rotation before the 80-79 win over Akron on Saturday – they struggled offensively in the first four minutes of the game.

In the opening four minutes of those five games, the Huskies were outscored, 36-17, shot 5 for 19 (26.3 percent) and committed 11 turnovers.

However, those numbers have changed dramatically with Wilson in the starting lineup in place of junior guard Michael Orris.

In the past two games, the Huskies have outscored Akron and Bowling Green a combined 19-9 while shooting 7 for 13 (53.8 percent) and committed two turnovers in the first four minutes.

“Marshawn has proved that when he’s in the game, he can score the basketball,” NIU coach Mark Montgomery said. “I think

After losing five in a row, the Huskies (18-8, 7-6 MAC West) have won two straight and finish the regular season with five games against MAC West opponents. The Cardinals (179, 8-5 MAC West) remained in first place in the division after a 73-56 win at Miami (Ohio) on Tuesday.

BELVIDERE – DeKalb’s Amanda Ross grabbed a rebound, scored while drawing a foul and converted a threepoint play with 2:00 remaining while her teammates jumped up and down and screamed on the bench.

A little while later, the Barbs did the same for Catherine White and she tossed in a hook shot in the lane with 12 seconds to go.

It didn’t matter that the game against powerful Huntley had long since been over.

Ross, a junior reserve, rarely scores. White, a senior backup, had not scored all season.

So as the Barbs’ season was ending in a 66-41 loss in the Class 4A Belvidere North Regional girls basketball tournament, those baskets were something to celebrate.

Huntley (27-3), which suffered all three losses at the Montini Christmas Tournament and is led by 6-foot-2 Ali Andrews, who will play at Illinois.

The top-seeded Red Raiders unleashed everything on No. 9 DeKalb in the second quarter with a 30-4 advantage. The Barbs had 16 turnovers at halftime.

“We played them last year and knew we’d have to play out of this world to beat them,” Barbs coach Heath Kent said.

“We competed, I was happy with the way we finished, the second quarter kind of killed us, but we competed. Hopefully, they’ll make a little run for it.”

Raquel Mills scored nine points in the fourth quarter and hit three 3-pointers to lead DeKalb with 12 points.

Jania Carver added eight.

Andrews led Huntley with 21, while Paige Renkosik added 14 and Morgan Clausen scored 12. Raiders coach Steve Raethz pulled his starters with 3:15 remaining in the third quarter.

Spartans stun Cavaliers with 3s Win against 2-loss team a big boost

sports@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – The gym at Sycamore High School was rocking with the Spartans tied with the Cavaliers with less than a minute to go.

Tyler Maveus scored a two-point basket, and then LaSalle-Peru’s Brady Huebbe missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Spartans a 57-55 win Tuesday.

Sycamore relied on the 3-point shot to beat the Cavaliers. As a team, the Spartans sank 14 3s, with Jack Mizgalski hitting seven to lead the team with 23 points.

“It helps when we shoot like we did from the perimeter,” Spartans coach Andrew Stacy said. “We want to be balanced, but, unfortunately, we don’t have anyone who is our back-to-thebasket player right now, but we try to be patient and wait for open shots. It was all because of them.”

Mizgalski said they don’t plan on relying on 3s, but sometimes the shots just happen to fall.

“We don’t go into games just focusing on 3-pointers,” Mizgalski said. “We want to get the ball inside, and then take our 3s. But tonight was just a good night shooting for us. My teammates were finding me tonight, they were getting me the open looks and giving me the opportunity to take a shot.”

“It’s huge. Tonight was kind of like a playoff game with a playoff atmosphere, and against a great team like LaSalle-Peru. It gives us a lot of confidence that we can beat great teams when we play the right way.”

Sycamore boys basketball coach only their second loss on the season, and with only two regular-season contests remaining before the playoffs, Stacy said a big win such as this will give his team a boost.

“It’s huge,” Stacy said. “Tonight was kind of like a playoff game with a playoff atmosphere, and against a great team like LaSalle-Peru. It gives us a lot of confidence that we can beat great teams when we play the right way.”

Sycamore is 13-11 on the season, with a 7-5 in Northern Illinois Big 12 East record. They will travel to South Elgin on Tuesday to try to keep their momentum going.

“It’s huge confidence booster to know we can beat a team like that,” Mizgalski said. “And we’re going to keep that boost going right into the playoffs.”

Spoiling Brett Favre Night on Thankgiving was just too much fun.

On the field, the Bears stunned the favored Packers. And off it, they danced with coach John Fox in celebration.

“That has to be the highlight,” veteran left tackle Jermon Bushrod said of his three seasons with the Bears. “That’s just good ol’ fun – the longest rivalry in (NFL) history.

“But honestly, just having this opportunity Jermon to play for such a great Bushrod organization was such a tremendous honor. I really want to thank everyone from the McCaskeys on down.”

Bushrod’s run with the Bears officially ended Tuesday when he was released after failing a physical. The shoulder injury that hindered him for most of the 2015 season remains an issue.

CHAMPAIGN – A University of Illinois official familiar with the decision said the school has hired Washington University athletic director Josh Whitman as its new AD. The official spoke to The Associated Press on Tuesday night on the condition of anonymity because the decision had not been announced publicly.

Whitman will take over for Mike Thomas, who was fired Nov. 9 although interim Chancellor Barb Wilson said he had done nothing wrong.

Thomas was fired just more than two months after he had fired football coach Tim Beckman amid allegations that Beckman had interfered in players’ medical decisions and pressured players to play hurt.

Seven women’s basketball players have sued the school claiming coach Matt Bollant and some staff created a racially abusive environment.

DETROIT – With a playoff spot within reach this year, the Detroit Pistons made a trade they hope will benefit them both now and in the future.

The Pistons acquired forward Tobias Harris from Orlando on Tuesday in a deal that sent guard Brandon Jennings and forward Ersan Ilyasova to the Magic. The 23-year-old Harris gives Detroit another athletic young player, and he’ll be under team control for a while. Harris signed a $64 million, four-year deal to stay with the Magic last summer, when he was a restricted free agent.

Add 1 cup grape tomatoes and 2½ cups shredded cooked chicken meat. Stir in a 14½-ounce can light coconut milk and 1 to 2 tablespoons red curry paste. Bring to a simmer, then add the pasta. Stir in 1 tablespoon fish sauce, if desired. Serve with lime wedges and chopped fresh cilantro.

Drain the pasta and set aside. In the same bowl, combine all remaining ingredients, stirring well. Add the pasta, toss to combine, then season with a pinch of salt. When DeKalb’s 1st McDonald’s opened

Ray Kroc’s McDonald’s Systems Inc. was scouting for restaurant locations in DeKalb as early as 1959. By 1965, the McDonald’s at 805 W. Lincoln Highway had sold 4 million hamburgers – at 15 cents each – and 1 million pounds of french fries.

DeKalb’s first McDonald’s opened May 3, 1960, across from the Fine Arts Building off the Northern Illinois University campus. An advertisement in the Daily Chronicle on May 2 announced “tomorrow is it” and “come and get ’em.” It featured slogans such as “look for the drive-in with the arches” and “a pleasure every family can afford.” The grand opening was Saturday, May 7.

DeKalb foundation and concrete contractor Robert C. Rich poured the foundation of the restaurant. Local contractor Lane Severson did the general carpentry. Brown Refrigeration & Supply installed the refrigeration equipment. L & M Electric Contractors did the electrical work. Tom Henigan Jr. did the plumbing. Sycamore contractor Frank E. Johnson got the masonry contract. Johnson Concrete Co. furnished the concrete.

I know this because all six contractors put ads in the May 6 paper that noted their contributions to the restaurant and wished it luck.

Operator Chris Boulos had initially planned to open in April, according to a report that month in the Daily Chronicle. It provided the following description of the restaurant: “The DeKalb establishment is one in a national chain of 167 in 29 states.

The drive-in is designed with rainbow shaped arches, neon lights, has a food preparation area of 400 square feet.

Orders are taken at a window, from the customer. There are no carhops and no person enters the food area except operator and employees. Concentrating on three food items and seven drinks the establishment has specialized for the benefit of service and cost.”

The restaurant was popular right away.

Shortly after opening, Boulos placed an ad in the Daily Chronicle that said “Thank you DeKalb for your wonderful response to our grand opening!”

The restaurant was closed on Thanksgiving, but Boulos encouraged readers in another advertisement to “bring all the family” out the follow-

By 1965, McDonald’s had made its mark on DeKalb. An article in the Daily Chronicle in April of that year reported that May 3 would mark several milestones for the DeKalb restaurant, including its fifth year and 4 millionth hamburger sold.

Here is an excerpt from that article, which appeared on the business page without a byline.

“In the past five years, McDonald’s has not only become a landmark in DeKalb but a way of life for local families. There are children now in grade school in DeKalb who can’t remember when their families didn’t make a habit of going to McDonald’s for hamburgers – and frequent French fries too, apparently, since local residents have now put away a million pounds of them.”

Boulos went on to make significant contributions to DeKalb’s business community and civic life. Born in Thana, Tripoli, Greece, in 1909, he died at Kishwaukee Community Hospital in 1981. His obituary noted that he “was the retired owner-operator of the original McDonald’s restaurant in DeKalb.” It also that he was past president of St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church in DeKalb, past president of the Rotary Club, member of the Masonic Lodge A.F. & A.M. No. 144 DeKalb, and past president of the DeKalb County Shrine Club, among others.

The original building was rebuilt, amid some controversy, for about $1 million in 2000. The McDonald’s at 805 W. DAILY CHRONICLE The vision for Clinton Rosette Middle School is for all students and staff to feel safe and valued as important members of the CRMS learning community.

Positive Behavior Interventions and Systems has been an important part of this vision for years.

“Catching” students behaving in positive ways academically and socially has proven to be successful in motivating students to make good choices.

Participating in “The Great Kindness Challenge of 2016” is another way of reinforcing the school’s vision. From Jan. 11 to 18, students and staff were encouraged to perform acts of kindness and to keep a checklist to help them monitor their good deeds. Participation was high, and many students commented on how good it felt to be “spreading kindness.”

During the week, the announcements included a “Quote of the Day,” which teachers also posted in their rooms. One such quote by Margaret Mead was, “Never believe that a few caring people can’t change the world. For, indeed, that’s all who ever have.” The quotes were good conversation starters as students were able to examine their own beliefs about our responsibility to each other.

Students and staff accepted the challenge by dressing for the occasion. Each day of the week was connected to the subject of kindness. The week began with “Tied together by kindness,” so ties

Other activities included a review of what respect looks like at CRMS as well as a “New Year, New You” conversation which encouraged students to partner up and share their thoughts on some questions.

As a visual for the school, students were each given a leaf to put on the “Kindness Tree” in the commons. Students wrote what kindness means to them on the leaves and placed them on the branches. One student wrote that “Kindness is doing something for someone else expecting nothing in return.”

The week was a great way to show that CRMS is a community of learners who care.

BRIEFS Resource Bank offers Centennial Service Award

Applications are being accepted for the Resource Bank Centennial Service Award.

Each year, up to 10 $1,000 scholarships are awarded to graduating seniors who exhibit a strong sense of community pride and are highly involved in volunteer and community service activities. Applicants should have demonstrated characteristics of citizenship, commitment, ambition, determination, organization, generosity and caring.

Involvement in community service during high school may include activities such as community beautification and clean-up projects, working with senior citizens, helping the homeless, volunteering for the local fire department, rescue squad, hospital, or donating time to a library, animal shelter or park district. It may also include organized activities such as Habitat for Humanity, 4-H, Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts, or church activities.

Applicants must be high school seniors who will receive their diploma from an accredited high school in the DeKalb County area during the 2015-2016 school year.

Applicants must have a minimum grade point average of 2.5 and must attend an institution of higher learning beginning in

the fall of 2016. Applications are available in the guidance office at area high schools, at all Resource Bank N.A. branches and at www.ResourceBank.com.

Submit applications to any Resource Bank branch no later than April 8.

Olympics continue at Sycamore Middle School

Teams of Sycamore Middle School students put it all on the line to compete in the annual Science Olympiad from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 25 at the school.

This is live-action, real-time science action at its best. Come witness the suspense, the drama and the heart-stopping moments of middle school science in Sycamore.

There will be marshmallows flying, cars that roll and then ... stop, boats that float, houses that heat up, structures that are the tallest ever built, contraptions that have the slowest moving marbles in history, and eggs that can drop two meters without breaking.

The student teams will pit sixth-, seventhand eighth-graders against each other in a “Jeopardylike” trivia game known as “The Science Bowl.” Medals will be awarded in each event.

Dear Abby: There is a topic I haven’t seen addressed in your column, namely being sexually abused by a spouse.

I ended my marriage because my husband was waking me at 2 a.m. demanding sex. He expected me to have sex only a week after I had our baby, although my doctor had said I should wait six weeks.

If I thought something he wanted me to do was degrading, he insisted I do it anyway.

It amazes me the subject of spousal abuse isn’t mentioned in premarital counseling. No one seems willing to acknowledge this kind of abuse exists.

Is there even a “survivors” network or support group to cope? I went to individual counseling, but it didn’t help me.

I think it would be helpful if society would acknowledge this kind of thing does happen. I also think those who offer premarital counseling should be required to discuss the warning signs of a sexual abuser. – The Ex Mrs.

Massage can relieve back pain Dear Dr. K: My back is always sore. A friend suggested massage therapy might help. Massages are expensive, so I want to make sure there’s some evidence behind this. Is there?

Dear Reader: Massage used to be considered an indulgence. But now it’s recognized as a legitimate therapy for some painful conditions – including back pain.

Therapeutic massage may relieve pain in several ways. It may relax painful muscles, tendons and joints, or relieve stress and anxiety. It even may change the way the brain processes pain signals.

Many types of massage are available in the United States, with Swedish massage being the most common. It involves long, gliding strokes and kneading of the major muscle groups, as well as friction, gentle rhythmic slapping and vibration. Other massage techniques include deep-tissue, pressure-point, Thai and neuromuscular massage. (I’ve put a table describing different types of massage, and what they involve, on my website, www.askdoctork. com.)

Massage therapy also can involve varying degrees of pressure. Massage doesn’t have to be painful to be therapeutic, so be sure to tell your therapist what type of touch you prefer (light touch, firm pressure, hard pressure).

Massage should not be the only treatment you use for back pain. Instead, use massage in addition to standard care. That includes taking anti-inflammatory pain relievers, staying as active as possible, getting physical therapy and giving your body time to heal. When added to the mix, massage can reduce pain and speed your return to normal activities.

Talk to people you know to get a recommendation. Good practitioners get good results and generate positive referrals.

Find out if a medical center in your area has an alternative or integrative medicine program. Such programs typically offer massage by qualified practitioners: people licensed to practice in your state and certified by a national organization such as the American Massage Therapy Association (www.amtamassage.org).

When I was just beginning medical practice, I learned a valuable lesson. A woman in her mid-80s told me she had trouble sleeping. I told her about the various ways to improve her “sleep hygiene,” such as going to bed and getting up at the same time each day, not watching TV while in bed, etc.

When I saw her a few months later, she said a massage therapist had cured her sleep problem – and implied my advice hadn’t done much good. What was keeping her up (as I would have known, had I asked her more questions about her sleep problem) was chronic back pain. That was resolved with massage – and she slept like a baby.

At the bridge table, exceptions keep the game alive. For example, you have J-9-6-4 in the dummy opposite A-Q-10-7 in your hand. To play that suit for four tricks, you should finesse through your right-hand opponent. It gives you a 50-50 shot at avoiding a loser. Instead, to lead the jack and then to put up the ace wins only when lefty has a singleton king, which has an a priori probability of just under three percent. Mathematically, it is a crazy play. But can you think of any reasons why it would be the right play?

Now look at the North-South hands in today’s diagram. South is in four spades. West cashes the club ace and club king before shifting to a heart. How should South continue?

In the bidding, South’s two-club cue-bid was totally artificial, indicating at least 12 points. The rest of the auction was natural.

I can think of three reasons not to finesse in that suit. The first is fanciful: if you know righty will always cover an honor with an honor, regardless of its stupidity. The second will be the theme of tomorrow’s column.

This deal exhibits the third. Dummy has 14 points and declarer has 13.

That leaves only 13 for the opponents, but West opened -- he must have the spade king. So, there is no point in taking a losing finesse; you never know, you might get lucky and drop a singleton king.

The restaurant was opened by John Pappas who is very well known in the community. On November 10, 2015, Vasilis (Bill) Hristakos and Peter Kanovos, who is also very well known in the community as the previous owner of Tom and Jerry’s for 20 years, purchased the restaurant. Bill and Peter have thirty-seven years of experience in the restaurant business.

Fawn Hansen is the General Manager and has been with the restaurant since they opened. Bill and Fawn have formed a partnership in which they have agreed to keeping all of the basic elements of the business that the community has come to love, as well as improving upon many of the other aspects in order for the restaurant to flourish in this community.

Within the dining room, there is a semi-private room called the Garnsey Room, after the architect of the Ellwood House located in DeKalb. The room is available for reservations for parties of eight to fourteen. Children are welcome at the restaurant and there is a new kids menu featuring fun activities for both younger and older children.

Ellwood Steak and Fish House is all about comfort.

There is no dress requirement and guests are encouraged to come in attire that is comfortable to them. The 1879 Lounge, named after the year the Ellwood House was built, features $6 small plates Sunday through Thursday all day long. The 1879 Lounge is full service so you can get an entire meal even at the bar top, so you may eat wherever you are most comfortable.
