Will DeKalb ever see another bookstore? POLL YESTERDAY’S RESULTS Will there ever be a bookstore in the DeKalb-Sycamore community again?

Sorry to say it, but signs point to no.

It’s been more than a year since Barnes & Noble shut the doors on its store on Sycamore Road and moved out of DeKalb County.

A lot of people argued passionately for them to work with the property management company to find a way to stay, to no avail.

In an editorial last year, we called for anyone in the bookselling business to take a look at this community, where so many people said they would be happy to support another bookstore.

What’s happened since then? Nothing.

That’s not a good sign.

Generally, when there’s an underserved market, it’s not long before someone steps in to meet the demand. If the problem was that Barnes & Noble was just in too big a space, well, there are lots of smaller spaces available, both in the Sycamore Road corridor and in other high-traffic areas around town.

It would seem that with all the effort the community puts into marketing itself, if

Maybe the niche for a physical bookstore doesn’t exist any more in town, where DeKalb has a big new library with lots of public space, and online retailers like Amazon are huge players in the actual book-selling market.

Or maybe the right entrepreneur just hasn’t come along yet. Maybe some retailer out there has DeKalb on its list but just hasn’t been in an expansive mode yet.

We can hope, I suppose. There still are a lot of people who would patronize a local bookstore, and they’d be grateful to any proprietor who came to DeKalb.

Junior Grace Klonoski wins best soloist in a cappella quarterfinals

DeKALB – When Katie Hagaman was a kid, she knew she wanted to be an a cappella singer like her brother, so as soon as she hit DeKalb High School, she followed in his footsteps and joined Enharmonic Fusion.

“That is a really cool and fun part” she said. “But what happens behind the scenes is really what makes this group great. It’s not about the actual performance. It’s about getting to come to practice every day with these people that I love for three hours.”

Enharmonic Fusion was one of eight high school groups to perform Friday in the 2016 Varsity Vocals International Championship of High School A Cappella Midwest Quarterfinal, which took On the Web place at DeKalb High School.

South Milwaukee High School was next with a second-place finish.

Both teams will compete in the Midwest semifinals March 19 at DeKalb High School for a shot to perform at the ICHSA finals in New York City.

Junior Ben Vance remembered last year’s win, but said he was more excited about the performance than anything.

“It was the craziest rush of emotions I’ve ever felt,” he said. “Like after you get off, there is the best sense of relief and the fact that you did it with all these people that you know and love makes it that much better.”

Travis Erikson, director of the group, said that a cappella performance has been gaining steam in recent years, thanks to the popular TV show “Glee” and movie “Pitch Perfect.”

Erikson used to sing a cappella in his college days, and said the style was unique in the way it bonds singers.

“There is research that shows that when you’re singing with other people, there are a lot of psychological connections,” he said. “The work-

ing together aspect helps make some really tight bonds with people.”

Each group chose three songs to perform Friday, but Enharmonic

Fusion will broaden its set list for the Feb. 27 show at the Egyptian Theatre, where it will open at 7 p.m. for Parachute.

“We’re really excited we were chosen to perform,” Erikson said.

“We’re going to work up some other pieces and pull some things out of our repertoire for that one.”

Students said that they liked the camaraderie and fun found within the a cappella tribe. Ian Panke also performs with the DHS Madrigals and Varsity Choir, but said he likes the diversity that comes with performing a cappella.

“I joined because I always felt a passion for music, so it seemed like a logical thing to do,” he said. “But I have the most most fun with this group because there are a lot more liberties you can take and things you can do that you can’t do with any of the other programs that the school offers.”

Taking love as it unfolds

After 58 years, the O’Kanes still are head-over-heals

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Jim and Maxine O’Kane are kids in love.

Black-and-white photos of decades spent together line the walls of the O’Kanes’ room at Lincolnshire Place Assisted Living. Fifty-eight years have passed since Maxine O’Kane posed straight-faced for the wedding photo by the door, but the two have only grown more smitten with each passing day.

“I keep telling her she’s the best thing that ever happened to me, and she always says she’s the only thing,” he said.

At 86 years old, Jim O’Kane has the hearty belly laugh of a teenager and the same light-hearted sense of humor his wife fell in love with. Despite raising four children, the two say they’ve never had a fight. This Valentine’s Day, Jim and Maxine O’Kane plan to ballroom dance to music they fell in love listening to. They said they hope today’s younger couples might find the same unfaltering and effortless happiness they have.

“I don’t know if there’s any secret,” Jim O’Kane said. “Just don’t take things too seriously. Whatever happens, happens.”

He knows times have changed, however. He suspects it might be harder for single, young people to foster genuine relationships in a hyper-technological and increasingly risqué age.

A few too many bad experiences on dating websites throughout the years left Sycamore Singles Coordinator Jen Low ready to surrender her love life.

“It was a lot of misrepresentation,” Low said. “The pictures didn’t match.

They weren’t the same people. A couple of people were married, I found out later. It’s the Internet, you know?”

But the moment she declared herself single and proud was the moment she met her boyfriend.

“He was one of those shy guys who was not very outgoing,” she said.

“We’ve been together for a year now.”

The O’Kanes weren’t looking for love when it happened for them either.

“We were working at the same company,” Jim O’Kane said. “She was the best looking girl there, so I got up the nerve one day and asked her if she’d

The Sycamore Singles group has amassed more than 200 people who regularly meet up in a large groupdate setting. This Valentine’s Day the bunch will celebrate together, even if means just being thankful for their new group of friends.

“Sycamore Singles is more local to the city; a lot of people already know each other,” Low said. “What we try to provide is a safe environment for people to go out and have fun. There’s no expectations with it. We’re all out to have a good time and be out with other singles.”

Meanwhile, as Jim and Maxine O’Kane fox trot and jitterbug down memory lane, they have just one piece of advice for couples everywhere.

“Don’t argue about anything. It isn’t worth it,” Maxine O’Kane said.

“Just be kind and polite to each other as much as you were while you were going together.”

William Edward “Bill” Abbott Jr., 52, of Sycamore, Illinois, formerly of Cortland, passed away Tuesday, February 9, 2016, at home, with his family present.

Born December 21, 1963, in DeKalb, the son of William and Terri (Lewis) Abbott, Bill married Michelle Moos on June 30, 2005, in Sycamore. Bill worked for Alexander Lumber. He loved the outdoors and was an avid Dale Earnhardt Sr. fan.

He is survived by his wife, Michelle; parents, William Abbott Sr. and Terri Abbott of Cortland; daughter, Stephanie (Bill) Heyer and grandsons, Bryce and Christofer Heyer, of Rockford; sister, Connie (Mark) Lee; his grandmother, Jean Lewis; stepsons, Adam Wold and Eric (Rebecca) Moos; several aunts, uncles and cousins; a niece; a nephew; a great-niece; a great-nephew; and his “little boy, Bear,” his cat.

He was preceded in death by his son, Kristofer Abbott; maternal grandfather; paternal grandparents; several aunts and uncles; and his best friend, Jake.

A celebration of life will be at a later date.

FRANK F. O’BARSKI Born: Nov. 28, 1948 Died: Feb. 9, 2016

he married on May 17, 2013. He was elected to the DeKalb County Board in 2012 and again in 2014. He had many interests, among them biology - when he was still a child he raised and successfully bred salt-water tropical fish that had been thought impossible to breed in captivity. He loved baseball, especially the New York Yankees and the Chicago White Sox. He was a student of history, economics, psychology, and politics.

In addition to being a member of the DeKalb County Board, Mr. O’Barski was also the President of the Board of Trustees of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of DeKalb.

Mr. O’Barski is survived by his wife, Suzanne Willis; and his stepson, Leo Reich, both of DeKalb.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 20, at 2:00 pm at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of DeKalb, 158 N. 4th St. in DeKalb. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of DeKalb or to the DeKalb County Community Gardens.

Frank F. O’Barski died at his home, surrounded by family and friends, on February 9. He was the son of the late George O’Barski and Ellen (Semko) O’Barski.

PATRICK ALEXANDER REGAN Patrick Alexander Regan, 25, formerly of Sycamore passed away Wednesday, February 10, 2016, at St. James Medical Center in Pontiac Illinois. He was the son of Robert Regan and Donna (Tinker) Hogle.

Patrick was known for his kind heart, wide smile, and wonderful sense of humor. He loved the Bears and was proud of his USMC service. Patrick was a 2008 Sycamore high school graduate. He was loved by all and will be greatly missed.

Patrick is survived by his parents, Robert Regan and Donna (Kevin) Hogle; his brother, Derek Regan; his sisters, Riley and Hannah Regan; his step-siblings, Kim (Rob) Holst and Geoff (Lauren) Hogle; his nieces, Abby Regan, Ashley and Hailey Holst and Leah Hogle; his nephew, Austin Hogle; his grandfather, Robert Regan Sr.; his grandmother, Joan Hogle; his

step mother, Linda Regan and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by paternal grandmothers, Eleanor (Ron) Collins and Lorene Frieders; and maternal grandparents, Earl and Lee Tinker and Dean Hogle.

BRIEFS Former DeKalb priest faces sex abuse charges

An Aurora priest and former DeKalb minster remained at the Kane County jail Friday on criminal sexual abuse charges.

Alfredo Pedraza Arias, of the 200 block of High Street, Aurora, has not worked in a church since accusations arose in Oct. 2014, according to a news release from the Diocese of Rockford.

Pedraza Arias joined the Rockford Diocese in 2013 and started work with the Hispanic Ministry in DeKalb, and the Sacred Heart Parish and Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish in Aurora.

Police believe the abuse took place at both Sacred Heart Church in Aurora and one of the children’s homes, according to a news release from the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Pedraza Arias was arrested Thursday by the U.S. Marshal Service and Kane County Sheriff’s Office. He is charged with aggravated criminal sexual abuse – a felony punishable by three to seven years in prison. Should Pedraza Arias be convicted, he would have to register as a sex offender.

Pedraza Arias’ bond has been set at $50,000, meaning he must post $5,000 bail to be released. He is due back in court Thursday.

The Kane County Child Advocacy Center continues to investigate the situation.

New owner plans upgrades at Cortland Estates

DeKALB – The Cortland Estates apartment community in Cortland will get some rehab and upgrades, its new owners have announced.

Dominium paid $4.6 million for Cortland Estates, 230 McMillan Court, in a move that expands the Minneapolis-based apartment development and management company’s reach in the Midwest, said Willy Boulay a Dominium development associate.

Dominium has properties in 22 states and in Illinois, Cortland Estates is one of seven.

Boulay said monthly rent for a two-bedroom unit in the affordable housing commuity will go for approximately $720-$850, and about $920 for three-bedrooms.

Dominium plans to rehab the clubouse and put all new equipment in the fitness room.

The 96 apartment units will each have a washer and dryer installed. The company plans to invest over $600,000 with the upgrades, Boulay said, adding that all of that work is underway and should be completed

by June.

Ill. to close youth correctional facility

SPRINGFIELD – Gov. Bruce Rauner’s administration announced Friday it will close the youth correctional facility in Kewanee, news that delighted a civil rights group but distressed employees who worried about alternative housing for maximum-security offenders.

Illinois Juvenile Justice Director Candice Jones said the move would save money, offer young offenders rehabilitation in less-restrictive settings and improve community safety.

“Youth do best when we work with them in the most appropriate, least-restrictive setting,” Jones said in a statement. “That means partnering with proven, effective nonprofits to provide resources and work with youth in the communities. It also means that secure custody in state facilities should be reserved for only the highest-risk youth.”

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS – Illinois transportation planners are awaiting details of how they could use a potential multimillion dollar windfall for the state.

A spending bill approved by Congress in late 2015 contains a clause allowing unused transportation earmarks to be dispensed to states for related work. The earmarks must be more than 10 years old and less than 10 percent of the total must have been spent or obligated.

The total amount of cash available could be nearly $2.2 billion, according to the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials’ analysis of U.S. Department of Transportation data. Illinois could receive $84.7 million, which could boost the state’s minimalist road work plans amid the ongoing financial crisis, the Daily Herald reported.

“We are actively working on this issue

Renovation to governor’s mansion gets donations

SPRINGFIELD – The organization leading efforts to renovate the Illinois governor’s mansion said it received $1 million in donations last year.

The mansion has fallen into disrepair in recent years with a flooded basement, leaky roof and peeling paint. The Illinois Executive Mansion Association said Friday it also received $280,000 in free services last year and completed the first phase of work on the mansion roof.

The association estimates renovating the 160-year-old home will cost between $8 million and $12 million and take two years. It’s the third-oldest state governor’s residence in the U.S. The second phase of work includes exterior and interior renovations, private residence modernization and updates to landscaping, grounds and security.

Illinois gets extension to determine flooding damage

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois has received additional time to determine whether to seek a federal disaster declaration for early-winter floods.

The Illinois Emergency Management Agency said its federal counterpart has extended by two weeks a Friday deadline to make such a request. The state agency had sought to push the deadline back to mid-March.

Federal Emergency Management Agency workers came to Illinois early this month to work with the U.S. Small Business Administration, IEMA and county emergency management agencies to document the extent of damage to homes and businesses in central and southern Illinois.

Man found guilty of taking girl to Ill. for prostitution

CHICAGO – Federal officials said a Milwaukee man has been convicted of transporting an underage girl from Madison, Wisconsin, to the Chicago area to engage in prostitution.

A news release from the U.S. attorney’s office for the Northern District of Illinois said a jury convicted 32-year-old DaJuan Key on Thursday on one count of knowingly transporting a minor from Wiscon-

GLENDALE, Ariz. – Two 15-year-old girls died Friday in a shooting at a suburban Phoenix high school that initially caused panic among parents who could not reach their children but later emerged as a murder-suicide.

Police announced that a suicide note was found at the shooting scene near the cafeteria area of Independence High School in Glendale. They said the girls each were shot once, were declared dead at the scene and a weapon was found near the bodies.

“Information gathered by detectives reveal the two girls were very close friends, appeared to also be in a relationship,” Glendale police spokeswoman Tracey Breeden said in a statement Friday afternoon.

‘Finally’: Francis meets Russian Orthodox leader

HAVANA – With a hug and an exclamation of “Finally,” Pope Francis met Friday with Patriarch Kirill in the first-ever meeting between a pontiff and the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, a historic development in the 1,000year schism that has divided Christianity.

“We are brothers,” Francis said as he embraced Kirill in the small, wood-paneled VIP room of Havana’s airport, where the threehour encounter took place.

“Now things are easier,” Kirill agreed as he and the pope exchanged three kisses on the cheek. “This is the will of God,” the pope said.

Francis was having the brief talks in Cuba before heading off on a five-day visit to Mexico, where the pontiff will bring a message of solidarity with the victims of drug violence, human trafficking and discrimination to some of that country’s most violent and poverty-stricken regions.

The meeting and signing of a joint declaration was decades in the making and cemented Francis’ reputation as a risk-taking statesman who values dialogue, bridge-building and rapprochement at almost any cost.

In the 30-point statement, the two leaders declared themselves ready to take all necessary measures to overcome their historical differences, saying “we are not competitors, but brothers.”

Francis and Kirill also called for political leaders to act on the single most important issue of shared concern between the Catholic and Orthodox churches today: the plight of

Christians in Iraq and Syria who are being killed and driven from their homes by the Islamic State group.

“In many countries of the Middle East and North Africa, entire families of our brothers and sisters in Christ are being exterminated, entire villages and cities,” the declaration said.

While the meeting has been hailed by many as an important ecumenical breakthrough, Francis has also come under criticism for essentially allowing himself to be used by a Russia eager to assert itself among Orthodox Christians and on the world stage at a time when the country is increasingly isolated from the West.

The declaration was signed in the uniquely ideal location of Cuba: far removed from the Catholic-Orthodox turf battles in Europe, a country that is Catholic and familiar to Latin America’s first pope, but equally familiar to the Russian church given its anti-American and Soviet legacy. The pope helped mediate the declaration of detente between the U.S. and Cuba in 2014.

“If this continues, Cuba will become the capital of unity,” the pope said.

Calling the talks “very substantive,” Kirill said: “The results make it possible to say that today the two churches can actively work together to protect Christians around the world.”

The Vatican is hoping the meeting will improve relations with other Orthodox churches and spur progress in dialogue over theological differences that have divided East from West ever since the Great Schism of 1054 split Christianity.

Thumbs-up to ballots for early voting Thumbs-up: To ballots arriving for early voters in DeKalb County. It took a week after the scheduled start of early voting, but certified ballots were available for people at DeKalb County Clerk and Recorder Doug Johnson’s office by Thursday. Johnson said about 10 people had come by his office during the first days of early voting, only to be told there were no certified ballots available, but that all of them seemed to understand and agreed to come back. Ballots still are available almost a full month before the March 15 election, and no one was deprived of their right to vote, Johnson said. We hope the problem – caused by several ballot objections this election cycle – isn’t repeated in future years, but it seems as though Johnson figured a way to work around it for a short time.

Thumbs-up: To the Indian Creek girls basketball team. The Timberwolves won their second regional title in three years on Thursday, defeating Newark, 49-31. It’s been an impressive season for the T-Wolves, who have compiled a 28-1 record so far this year and have their sights set on continuing their postseason run. Congratulations, girls.

Thumbs-down: To missing documents online.

The Sycamore District 427 school board met this week to talk about proposed layoffs in the district. The agenda was posted online at the district’s website, but conspicuously absent were any documents detailing the “preliminary staffing reduction proposal.” This was clearly a case where details can and should have been available to the public in advance. They might have led to having more citizens attending the meeting and asking informed questions. There will be a public hearing about the plan, which calls for laying off 56 employees, at 7 p.m. Feb. 23 at Sycamore Middle School, 150 Maplewood Drive.

Thumbs-up: To one more shot for a Sycamore senior. At the Spartans’ girls basketball team’s Senior Night game Thursday, senior Morgan Picolotti got a chance to score her only points of a difficult season. Expected to be a starter when the season began, Picolotti tore her ACL in the opening game and did not play again until Thursday, when she started the game on the floor and her teammates got her the ball for an uncontested shot. It was a great display of sportsmanship by Sycamore and their opponents from Morris, and we hope it made up in a small way for Piccolotti missing most of the year.

Venezuela heads toward disaster

The political drama in Venezuela, where a populist, authoritarian government is attempting to cling to power despite losing a legislative election by a landslide, tends to obscure a deeper crisis. Although it is awash in oil, the country of 30 million people is facing an economic collapse and a humanitarian disaster.

Venezuela already suffers from the world’s highest inflation rate – expected to rise from 275 percent to 720 percent this year – one of its higher murder rates and pervasive shortages of consumer goods, ranging from car parts to toilet paper.

Power outages and the lack of raw materials are forcing surviving factories and shops to close or limit opening hours. According to a local survey cited by the Economist, the poverty rate is 76 percent, compared with 55 percent when Hugo Chávez, the late founder of the regime, took power in 1999.

Worst of all, the country is running desperately short of food and medicine. Venezuelans spend much of their time waiting in lines outside stores, but increasingly the shelves are bare. The head of the nation’s pharmaceutical associa-

tion recently appealed to the World Health Organization for aid, saying that distribution of 70 percent of basic medicines was disrupted. The chairman of the largest domestic food producer has said that if the government does not quickly seek aid to import food, it “will cause grave harm to ordinary Venezuelans.”

The math behind these warnings is stark, as economist Ricardo Hausmann recently outlined in the Financial Times.

At current oil prices, Venezuela will earn less than $18 billion from exports this year, while it owes $10 billion in payments on the $120 billion in debt it has racked up. That leaves $8 billion for imports, but even after contracting 20 percent, imports were $37 billion in 2015 and Venezuela now imports most of its food.

Others complained, “Cruz Camp is monitoring everything” and “INVASION OF PRIVACY!” But it’s not just Cruz who does this.

The Obama campaign reached into its supporters’ Facebook accounts and asked them to persuade their friends to support Obama. Facebook then changed its policies to give “friends” more privacy protection, but it’s safe to assume all future presidents will be elected with help from this sort of technology.

We asked an Iowa voter if he minded being targeted by Cruz.

He said, “No, I think it’s excellent. Use every tool we can, because we have to defeat those people. They’re using them.”

Why women who are office holders matter

Millennial women shouted their views with their votes in New Hampshire, where almost 80 percent of them went for Bernie Sanders.

The primary followed a flurry of stories about outraged young women claiming Madeleine Albright and Gloria Steinem had tried to “shame” them into voting for Hillary Clinton. Why, they demanded, should we vote for a woman simply because she is a woman?

The answer: Women in public office expand the rights and enhance the welfare of women and girls in this country and around the world.

These young women might still be looking at job listings labeled with “male” and “female” had it not been for the canny work of two women to insert the word “sex” into the employment section of the 1964 Civil Rights Act outlawing discrimination against race.

Democrat Martha Griffiths in the House and Republican Margaret Chase Smith in the Senate managed to outwit their colleagues in order to make it forever illegal to say: “We don’t hire women.”

Many of these young women proba-

bly participated in team sports, or even went to college on athletic scholarships, thanks to Title IX – the provision ending sex discrimination in higher education.

They can be grateful to Rep. Edith Green for that, and to other congresswomen for suffering the wrath of male athletic directors. Rep. Pat Schroeder remembers a Denver high school coach directing his boys to “show her what they thought of the law.” The whole team turned around and mooned her.

Fighting for women is not for the faint of heart.

All of the women in Congress, current and former, can tell stories of the difference they’ve made simply because they were in the room. Rep. Susan Molinari of New York sat somewhat slack-jawed in the 1990s, listening to her colleagues in the Republican leadership argue that they didn’t want to spend money on the Violence Against Women Act. When she explained that they would look like they were protecting wife-beaters, they saw the light and passed the bill.

Women in Congress come together across party lines over and over again, year in and year out, to fight for their sisters and their children. If these young voters ever want a leave from work to take care of a baby or another family

member, they can thank a bipartisan sisterhood that pushed relentlessly for passage of the Family and Medical Leave Act. “We agreed that if we didn’t drive these kinds of issues, who would?” recalls Maine Republican Olympia Snowe in her memoir. She concludes, “the Congressional Caucus for Women’s Issues made the lives of millions of women better in large and small ways.”

The same can be said of the women who have served as secretary of state.

When Madeleine Albright took the job as the first female in that exalted position, she put into practice her long-preached exhortation: “There’s a special place in hell for women who don’t help other women.” For the first time, the concerns of the other half of the human race rose to the forefront of foreign policy as U.S. embassies and consulates around the world were directed to promote programs to advance the status of women.

Condoleezza Rice kept the drumbeat pounding: She not only spoke forcefully for women’s rights at international conferences, but also prodded the U.N. Security Council to recognize rape as a war crime and pried money out of the administration to battle sex slavery. The health campaigns and rape centers she

helped set up still benefit women in the Middle East and Africa.

When Hillary Clinton moved to Foggy Bottom, she established the International Fund for Women and Girls to make sure that organizations promoting microfinancing or combatting violence against women would have some money to work with. And she elevated the Office of Global Women’s Issues so it reports directly to the secretary, sending a signal both to the world at large and to the bureaucrats in the building that these would be lead agenda items.

That’s what women in office do: They move matters that benefit women and families to the top of the pile. It’s not that men don’t care about those issues, it’s just that they don’t place as high a priority on them. That’s what many of these young women voters need to know.

Hillary Clinton may not be the candidate they choose for all kinds of reasons.

But to denounce the idea of voting for a woman just because she’s a woman reveals profound ignorance. Any woman who’s ever been in office could tell them that.

Politicians tailor their messages to different audiences. Facing New Hampshire’s primary, Ted Cruz talked more about “free-market principles” and a “commitment to the Constitution” and said “no one personality can right the wrongs done by Washington.”

Politico ran the headline “Ted Cruz, born-again libertarian.”

I’m skeptical. Campaigning in Iowa, Cruz had emphasized religion and social conservatism.

But politicians no longer just target voters state-by-state – they target by person.

Last election, President Obama beat Mitt Romney partly by doing just that.

Obama had 50 people working in data analytics. Romney had four.

“The campaign manager for the Obama campaign said the biggest institutional advantage they had was its use of data,” observes Cato Institute fellow Emily Ekins.

Conservatives had data, too, she said, but “Republican insiders tended to be a little bit closed-minded when it came to new methodologies.”

Not Cruz. He told my producers recently, “I bought a copy of David Plouffe, Obama’s campaign manager’s book, ‘The Audacity to Win,’ gave it to our senior team (and told them) we are going to

Knights end Barbs’ 16-game winning streak

ecarifio@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – DeKalb boys basketball coach Al Biancalana compared Friday’s game against Kaneland to a regional game, while Knights coach Joe Conroy called his team’s 62-56 a springboard into the postseason.

Biancalana was much more pessimistic after the loss for the Barbs, snapping a 16-game winning streak for DeKalb (21-4 overall, 9-1 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) and would have clinched the conference title.

“This showed our underbelly,” Biancalana said. “If our seniors can’t play with poise, and if our seniors cannot make tough plays, we have no chance.

Everything is great when things are going well for us during the game, but this was a regional game. And this performance would have ended our season.”

The Barbs spent most of the game in the lead, leading by six after a Luke Davis bucket opened the fourth. But Ryan David connected on back-toback 3-pointers to tie the score for the Knights (14-6, 7-2). Although they were the last field goals of the game for Kaneland, free throws and defense propelled them ahead for good.

The Knights took their first lead at 56-54 when Mark Lilly hit a pair of free throws with 3:18 left. Neither team scored for almost a minute and a half when Dylan Vaca added a free throw with 1:53 left to push the lead to three.

A Cole Tucker bucket cut the Kaneland lead to one, then Ethan Conroy added a free throw with 55.1 seconds left for a 58-56 lead.

Tucker tried to drive on the ensuing Barbs drive, then Conroy made another free throw to push the lead to three with 40 seconds left. Mike Pollack missed a 3-pointer that would have tied it then Kaneland sealed the game at the line.

“I hope it gives a great boost going into the rest of the season,” Joe Conroy said. “We have a huge game against Marian Catholic that’s ranked. It’s huge going into the rest of the season, getting ready for regionals, I think we have a vote this week for sectionals (seedings), so it helps us a great deal because DeKalb is a great basketball team.”

David finished with a game-high 15 for the Knights, with Vaca adding 13 – 10 from the line on 12 attempts – Ethan Conroy 11 and Lilly 10.

Ethan Conroy hit 3 of his 4 3-point attempts, which his Joe Conroy said helped spread the floor a little and open things up for David to hit his two big 3s early in the fourth.

“I feel like Ethan, he was going off, so all of a sudden they had to help,” Conroy said. “They stayed on him tight and

The last time the teams met, DeKalb won 41-32 at home Jan. 8. This team, the teams matched that point total with 4:30 left in the third quarter.

“I was expecting it to be more higher scoring, but I don’t know about this,” David said. “Last game we weren’t hitting a lot of shots and this game we were ale to knock down a lot of our shots and just do our thing.”

DeKalb used a 7-0 run to take the lead in the first quarter and didn’t relinquish it until the final 3-pointers from David in the fourth. The lead peaked at eight for the final time with 2:44 left in the fourth after a 3-point play by Robert Mitchell.

“The big thing was we just showed no toughness,” Biancalana said. “Every time we extended the lead a little bit to five or seven points, we’d give up some type of 3 or an offensive rebound or wouldn’t come up with a loose ball or foul. It just wasn’t a smart game. Then at the end of the game when we had a

couple chances we just did nothing. We made bad decision after bad decision.

We have to learn from it and get back at it Tuesday.”

Nick Snow led the Barbs with 15 points, Tucker added 11 and Pollack 10.

Pollack made his first two 3-pointers but spent a big chunk of the game on the bench in foul trouble. He missed all three of his 3s in the fourth.

“They got 3s off of loose balls, they got 3s off of offensive rebounds, they pushed us around, they got into Mike’s head,” Biancalana said. “When those things happen we’ve got no chance to win. We really reverted back to some ugly, ugly habits.

“The fact that guys got into our heads was absolutely ridiculous tonight,” he said. “We had seniors that were just, it was ridiculous.”

Davis also grabbed eight rebounds for the Barbs, but Kaneland finished with a 22-21 edge on the glass.

cbolin@shawmedia.com The Sycamore boys’ basketball team shot 3-pointers left and right in the first quarter against Yorkville.

The Spartans ended up with six in the first quarter – eight total all game – en route to a 47-34 victory Friday over the Foxes in a Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference game in Yorkville.

With the win, Sycamore improved to 12-11 overall, 6-5 in the conference.

Yorkville dropped to 10-13, 2-7. This is the second time this season the Spartans topped the Foxes.

“It was great,” Sycamore coach Andrew Stacy said. “We always talk about getting out to a good start. Tim (Zahm) and Jack (Mizgalski) did a really good job at making shots tonight.”

Zahm hit four three-pointers for Sycamore in the opening quarter alone and finished with a game-high 17 points. His final 3 in the first quarter capped a 14-3 run for the Spartans, who led, 20-15, after eight minutes of play.

“Obviously, you are not going to stay that hot (behind the 3-point line) the whole night, and Yorkville started to key on those guys who were hot and made adjustments,” Stacy said.

Despite outscoring Yorkville 7-4 in the third, Sycamore took its first double-digit lead of the game of 10 points twice in the quarter. The Spartans led 3626 entering the final frame after a pair of free throws from Ty Sulaver (12 points).

The closest Yorkville could come to catching up was after a free throw from Austin Avery that reduced the lead to 41-34 with 58.6 seconds left in the game.

Free throws from Mizgalski (15 points) and Sulaver further distanced the Spartans from the Foxes.

This was the second time the Foxes were held to a season-low 34 points.

Yorkville was led by Master Davis, Avery and Cameron Van Boekel, who each finished with six points.

“We struggled to score – it’s been our motto all year,” Yorkville head coach Mike Dunn said. “When you only score 34 points, it’s going to be tough to beat a lot of teams.”

GENOA – When Genoa-Kingston’s offense wasn’t clicking, its defense remained reliable and tough against Richmond-Burton, resulting in a Cogs 54-33 victory on Friday night.

The defense for the Cogs (15-11, 10-4 Big Northern) prevented Richmond-Burton from having a legitimate chance throughout most of the game on Friday night. The Cogs’ stingy defense took the Rockets (12-14, 7-7 Big Northern) out of their game and caused them to try to force passes that weren’t there and get into foul trouble from the early stages of the game.

“Our defense was pretty important for us tonight.” Genoa-Kingston coach Kyle Henkel said. “Our offense was pretty out of sync early and the fact that we held them (Richmond-Burton) to nine points in the first half allowed us to get going in the second half.”

Henkel said he like the hustle and energy his team showed.

“The one thing I ask from this team is to go out there and be the team that plays the hardest and I think we did that.” Henkel said. “We were the first ones on the floor for loose balls and we did a great job of preventing them from getting second

chance shots. Our defense and energy level carried us tonight.”

Despite lacking for a good portion of the game according to Henkel, the Cogs did have a few bright spots in the game and broke through during the fourth quarter – scoring 17 points being the highest quarter total of the night. The Cogs were led by top scorers Jesi Nay with 17 points and Julie Galauner with 15 points.

Like the Cogs, the Rockets were not on their offensive game and they could never seem to string together a series of points to stay in the game. With 3:22 to go in the fourth quarter, the Cogs opened the game up after stretching the lead to 27 points at 52-25 – part of that being a result of the Rocket offense never finding its rhythm.

The Rockets did not have a player reach double-digits in points with their leading scorer being KC Davids who had nine points.

“We weren’t very sharp tonight let me put it that way.” Richmond-Burton coach Todd Severns said. “Their strengths feed right into our weaknesses and you have to give credit to them.

When we aren’t sharp as a team we tend to tense up and rush things and try to score five points in five seconds and it all just starts to snowball.”

CHICAGO – The parents of 13 members of the Chicago Little League team stripped last year of its 2014 U.S. championship are suing team officials, Little League Baseball, an ESPN sportscaster and the man who exposed the team’s residency violations.

The lawsuit filed Thursday in Cook County Circuit Court claims Jackie Robinson West officials and the Little League “concealed the ineligibility of team members in order to reap the benefits of notoriety and media attention.”

The lawsuit alleges Little League officials should have figured out the team’s violations sooner. The parents say ESPN’s Stephen Smith defamed them by accusing them of “perpetrating a fraud.”

League said their organizations had not yet reviewed the lawsuit.

Mets pitcher Mejia 1st to draw lifetime drug ban

NEW YORK – Mets reliever Jenrry Mejia became the first player to receive a lifetime ban under Major League Baseball’s drug agreement after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance for the third time.

The commissioner’s office said Friday that Mejia tested positive for the anabolic steroid Boldenone, which athletes have used to increase muscle mass and once was popular for use in horse racing.

The 26-year-old right-hander was the Mets’ closer in 2014.

Dear Abby: I am 18 and in my sophomore year of college. A month ago, my family went through some major hardships. It came out that “Uncle Mark” has been cheating on my aunt for years and is moving his mistress to our area. They have two children, a son in elementary school and a daughter, “Dana,” 13.

I feel bad for my aunt, but I’m absolutely devastated for Dana. My Uncle Mark has skipped all of her school events in the wake of this mess, and I can’t begin to imagine how disappointed Dana must feel. Uncle Mark is a sociopath. He feels no empathy, manipulates others and has a sadistic streak. Dana was not close to her dad, but since this mess began she’s even less so.

Abby, I don’t want my cousin to feel like she’s alone. Since I’m an older teenager, she looks up to me.

HDL level a complicated story Dear Dr. K: I have high levels of HDL cholesterol – the “good” cholesterol. I was happy about that, but now I hear that medicines raising your HDL levels don’t seem to help.

Should I be disappointed?

Dear Reader: The HDL cholesterol story is complicated. It has been solidly established that people who have high levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol have a higher risk of developing heart disease. Moreover, it has been solidly established that treatments that lower LDL cholesterol reduce the risk of developing heart disease.

It also solidly has been established people with HDL levels above 60 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) tend to have a lower risk for heart disease. Since HDL removes cholesterol from the plaques in arteries, that observation made sense. So doctors and scientists developed drugs that raise HDL levels, just as they had developed drugs that lower LDL levels.

Several drugs that raise HDL levels have been around for 30 years, particularly gemfibrozil and niacin. But they raise levels only modestly. These drugs were tested in people with heart disease. They did lower the risk of new heart problems. However, it wasn’t clear if they achieved that benefit by raising HDL or through some other effect.

In the past several years, several different types of drugs were developed that could dramatically raise HDL levels. Most doctors, myself included, bet such drugs would probably reduce the risk of heart disease. Why? Because all the evidence seemed to point in that direction.

Before such drugs were approved by the Food and Drug Administration, however, the agency required that studies involving large numbers of people be conducted to prove the value of the drugs. To make a long and

Worse, in some cases, they have increased the risk.

To make things more confusing, a Harvard study found people with an unusual genetic condition that raises HDL levels did not have fewer heart attacks. The most likely conclusion of this surprising result is it is not the high HDL levels, but rather something else about most people who have high HDL levels that protects them from heart disease.

Many lifestyle changes raise HDL cholesterol and indisputably reduce your risk of heart disease: regular exercise, healthy weight, avoiding trans fats, quitting smoking and moderate use of alcohol. These lifestyle changes may not work through their effects on your HDL level, but they surely and powerfully do work.

So you still should be happy about your high HDL level. In most people, it means they do have a lower risk of heart disease.

And I haven’t given up hope some new HDL-raising drug may produce heart benefits. Or even one of the new drugs already developed, but used in a different dose, may prove beneficial. Until that day comes, you can raise your HDL even higher with the lifestyle changes I mentioned – and definitely improve your overall health as well.
