POLL Some arguments, you can’t win YESTERDAY’S RESULTS Some arguments, a man just can’t win – especially when those arguments are with his wife.

Like how you’re not supposed to flush facial tissue.

I know this. I’ve tried to make this point in my household, most recently last night before bed.

My arguments have fallen on deaf ears.

Who says you’re not supposed to flush it?, Kate asked me.

Well, me. My dad. My brother.

These sources were rejected as being not credible.

I grabbed the phone. Typed my query into Google.

“Kleenex, paper towels or tissue paper should not be flushed,” was the quote from the website itsdone.com.

Itsdone.com was likewise not considered credible enough.

I went to the Kleenex.com website, to their FAQ page. It said their tissue “will not break down as rapidly as bathroom tissue. Therefore, we suggest you discard Kleenex® Tissue in the trash.”

They’re just saying that because that’s what people want them to say, was the reply.

Finally, I asked what would be a credible source. The Environmental Protection Agency, she said.

But I didn’t want to win the argument badly enough to read a federal government

EDITOR’S NOTE Eric Olson website before bed. Besides, I think if Barack Obama had called and personally asked us not to flush any more facial tissue, it wouldn’t have made a difference at that moment.

That’s probably not what Obama would say, anyway. He’d be more likely to urge us to overcome our household differences about what can be flushed.

As Obama showed when he spoke in Wednesday in Springfield, some arguments are best left to the combatants.

It’s OK, though. It’s not as though we’re flushing boxes of facial tissue over at Casa de Olson.

But I know the people at any of our local wastewater treatment plants will back me up on this: The only thing you should really ever flush is toilet paper. The rest of the stuff, even things labeled as “flushable,” don’t break down the way they should in water.

Although be warned: I might not be a credible source.

At NIU budget stalemate rally, an urgent call for action

DeKALB – Without a state budget, the fiscal bloodletting continues for social services, state colleges and universities, and Northern Illinois University President Doug Baker said the impact is becoming irreparable.

Other local stakeholders stood with Baker on Thursday at a unity rally and made an urgent appeal to the governor and lawmakers to bring the budget stalemate to an end.

“As the reality of this budget impasse becomes clearer and clearer, the local legislators are going to have to come forward and really negotiate a solution with the governor’s office,” Baker said. “I think we need to use these kinds of rallies to show the impact on higher education and other community services.”

The state is now in its eighth month without a budget.

DeKalb-area business owners, social service and child care providers, city and county officials, and higher education leaders continue to publicly detail how not getting state aid impacts them.

“It isn’t just a few universities concerned about a little bit of money.

It’s about the viability of the institutions and the viability of the state,” Baker said. “Legislators are going to have to find a solution and do it quickly.”

Baker said NIU has made several cutbacks since it has not received any of the $64 million in state aid it expected in this fiscal year’s budget.

Despite its frugality, he said, the school fronted $20 million worth of Monetary Award Program grants to 5,700 students and awaits reimbursement.

The state, which awards and funds MAP grants to low-income students, suspended funding the program in the absence of a budget.

There will be no layoffs – for now – at NIU, said Baker.

At Kishwaukee College, the situation is different.

“Almost $5 million of our $23.2 million budget comes from state aid,” said Laurie Borowicz, Kishwaukee College president. “What we’re facing with no money this year, and no money going into next year ... we are having to reduce 17 percent of our

Administrators are planning to lay off 31 employees as of July 1.

The budget logjam has had other sweeping effects, speakers at the rally said.

A Kishwaukee College student and another from NIU said uncertainty around the MAP grant fund-

ing had put their academic future in jeopardy.

NIU junior Briana Smith, 23, a corporate communications major, said the funding holdup could push back her anticipated May 2017 graduation.

DeKalb High School band to perform in Dublin’s 2017 St. Patrick’s Day Parade

browland@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The Marching Barbs have been invited to perform in front of half a million people at the 2017 St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Dublin.

The international trip was announced to the community at Thursday’s basketball game in the Chuck Dayton Gymnasium at DeKalb High School. It also served as a kickoff for a year of promotion and fundraising to pay for the trip.

The DeKalb High School Band Parents Organization hopes to raise almost $250,000 to offset travel costs for about 100 band students, Amy Clark, the organization’s co-chairwoman, said.

The parade is part of Ireland’s St. Patrick’s Day Festival, a four-day event that includes a band competition.

DeKalb High School Band Director Steven Lundin has been planning the trip for several months. District 428 school board members approved the trip and several early fundraising programs last fall, according to meeting minutes.

Lundin said the idea for the event came four years ago after the band performed at Sugar Bowl in New Orleans.

Lundin said that event reinforced just how strong of a band the school has and how well they can compete. Going to Ireland will be unique.

“There’s something very special about St. Patrick’s Day in Dublin,” he said. “We expect it will be a really special experience.”

“They are really excited about this,” Clark said.

They also have stepped up to the fundraising challenges, which will include everything from car washes to candle sales to performances, Clark said.

“The students and parents have re-

This is something that can really bring the community together – something everyone can be proud of.”

Police discovered more than 150 Xanax pills in woman’s boot

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – Two women face criminal charges after police found more than 150 Xanax pills in one woman’s boot during a drug investigation.

Officers also found what they suspect is marijuana wax and drug paraphernalia, DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office officials said.

“We observed a suspicious vehicle in the area,” Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Andy Sullivan said, “which led to the arrests.”

The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office and the DeKalb Police Department were conducting an investigation around the 200 block of East Locust Street, DeKalb, when they found the two women in a car, which smelled of marijuana, police said.

After a search, officers found three grams of suspected marijuana wax, a glass pipe with marijuana residue in it and a bottle of about 15 Xanax pills.

Officers searched Bailey and discovered more than 150 additional Xanax pills in her boot.

Bailey is scheduled to appear in court March 18.

Smoldering burn pile leads to roof fire in Maple Park A burn pile of yard waste that blew embers onto the roof of a dilapidated building led to a roof fire at a barn about 12:30 p.m.

Thursday at 15795 Hinckley Road in Maple Park. “Sparks got up onto the roof,” Maple Park Fire Chief Kevin Peterson said on the scene. “It was just the roof that caught, the rest of it was already gone.” The building owner doesn’t plan to repair the building.

SYCAMORE – Certified ballots for early voters arrived Thursday at DeKalb County Clerk and Recorder Doug Johnson’s office.

At least two people voted early, Johnson said.

Although early voting was supposed to open a week earlier on Feb. 4, it took the Illinois State Board of Elections longer than normal to certify the ballots to local clerks, Johnson said.

He said about 10 people had stopped in to his office at 110 East Sycamore St. looking to vote, but no one was deprived of the ability to vote while ballots were unavailable.

Johnson said he was prepared to offer people applications for mail-in ballots, or if that would not work for them, allow them to vote an uncertified ballot that could be transferred later under the watchful eye of election judges.

“Most all of them are local people living right around here,” Johnson said. “They said they’d come back. Everybody was pretty understanding, and I appreciate it.” Early voting will be available at Johnson’s office until Feb. 29, when early voting will be held at five sites around DeKalb County.

DeKALB – The DeKalb County Health Department is available to help DeKalb County residents obtain health insurance.

The Mental Health Board will fund the Healthcare Enrollment Assistance Program, which allows the health department to hire a part-time certified application counselor. The counselor’s job is to help people navigate the Affordable Care Act marketplace and complete outreach efforts in the community.

Jane Lux, public health administrator, said the partnership with the mental health board was important to reach shared goals.

“One of the core functions of public health

is to ensure access to preventative and primary care,” Lux said in a news release.

Getting more people covered increases access, Deanna Cada, executive director of the mental health board said.

“Coverage through the Affordable Care Act is a major focus of the federal mental health agenda in order to increase access to services,” Cada said.

Open enrollment is currently limited to those with a qualifying life event like marriage, birth or adoption of a child and loss of coverage because of employment issues.

SYCAMORE – Three men who police said sent another man to the hospital after beating and robbing him remained at the DeKalb County Jail on Thursday.

A DeKalb police investigation into a series of robberies on the city’s northeast side led to the arrest of: Brandon Villarreal, 21, of the 600 block of Wrightwood Avenue, Addison; Marc A. Santiago, 22, of West Chicago; and Christian Zuniga, 23, of Bensenville.

Police began investigating the report of a robbery that happened Feb. 8 in the 1500 block of Elmwood Avenue, DeKalb, in which the men threatened two minors with a pellet gun, then stole their cigarettes, cellphones and money, court records show.

Police then received a report that a man had been held against his will Wednesday on the same block. The man was beaten with a piece of wood and a shovel, and burned with a knife, court records show.

His cigarettes, cellphone and cash were stolen.

The man was taken to Kishwaukee Community Hospital and treated for nonlife-threatening cuts and burns, court records show.

Santiago, Zuniga and Villarreal are each documented members of a street

gang, and the attacks are believed to have been gang related, court records show.

All three men are charged with aggravated robbery, aggravated Brandon battery, aggravated unVillarreal lawful restraint, and mob action. The most serious charge, aggravated robbery, is typically punishable by four to 15 years in prison.

Santiago Bond for Villarreal and Zuniga is set at $150,000. They must each post $15,000 bail to be released.

Santiago, who has two felony convictions, had bond set at $200,000 and must post $20,000 Christian bail to be released. AlZuniga though Santiago told Judge Philip Montgomery that he was homeless and was appointed a public defender, Santiago indicated he could post $10,000 bail. He is due back in court March 2.

Villarreal and Zuniga are scheduled to appear again March 4.

Rios said she relies on that state subsidy to help her pay for child care for her 3-year-old son while she works and attends classes.

“Not having a budget severely impacts what universities have to offer their students,” said Dillon Domke, speaker of the NIU student association. “I believe in the American dream. And the quickest way to achieve that American dream is by funding higher education.”

The threats to child care assistance also affect providers, said Michelle Baker McElroy, who owns the Once Upon A Time child care center in Sycamore.

She lost enrollment, was forced to close a preschool classroom and had to let staff go last summer when

Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner made only very low-income people eligible for the program.

Despite a later reversal of the changes, financial damage was done that McElroy said has been difficult to overcome – and may not be restored.

On the business front, Cohen Barnes, who owns DeKalb-based Sundog IT, said the state budget stalemate affects his business because it affects his customers.

“The state of Illinois, right now, is impacting my clients,” Barnes said. “It’s impacting their ability to grow their businesses and pay taxes.

This is a real issue that needs to be addressed and needs to be addressed soon.”

DeKalb Mayor John Rey said at the rally that the city is seeing the domino effect the impasse is having here.

“All of these add up and impact many citizens across the local neighborhood,” he said.

CHICAGO – Authorities have no suspects and a motive remains elusive one week after six family members were found dead in their Chicago home, police said Thursday, with investigators now focusing on video evidence, the weapons used and interviews with relatives and acquaintances to try to glean clues about why the family was targeted.

The wounds indicate that three knives or knife-like weapons were used to kill five of the victims, including two children; one woman was shot, police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said.

Investigators are interviewing a wide range of people, from the kids’ dad and their teachers to the adults’ co-workers, he said, “looking for what could have been the catalyst for this.”

“This was not random,” he said.

“There’s something centered on that family.”

MASCOUTAH – Members of Illinois’ congressional delegation are appealing to the head of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency in support of Scott Air Force Base’s bid to host its new facility.

This week, U.S. Sens. Dick Durbin and Mark Kirk and other Illinois congressmen wrote a letter to NGA Director Robert Cardillo, urging him to select a 182-acre site in St. Clair County as the location of the agency’s new $1.6 billion campus.

The two-page letter was meant to show there’s “unified support for the proposal from the bipartisan group representing communities across Illinois,” according to a news release issued Wednesday by Durbin’s office.

HILLSBORO – Some central Illinois residents are asking state regulators to reject a proposed expansion of a coal mine where an underground fire has smoldered for nearly a year.

Opponents of Foresight Energy’s planned Deer Run Mine expansion testified at a Thursday public hearing in Hillsboro that the company’s inability to quell the ongoing fire should lead the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to reject the request.

Foresight ceased mine production in early January in part because of the elevated carbon monoxide levels below ground. The company has applied for a 7,731-acre expansion into areas unaffected by the fire.

CHICAGO – A Chicago man won a $1 million verdict this week in a lawsuit that accused police of rigging a photo lineup to ensure he would be wrongly identified as an armed robbery suspect.

Jermaine Durdin was 18 when he was charged in the 2010 robbery of several hundred dollars from an ice cream truck in the Lawndale neighborhood on the city’s West Side. He spent nearly two years awaiting trial in the Cook County Jail before he was found not guilty – an experience he said in court this week deeply affected him and left a “stain” on his brain.

His story added to the cases of alleged police misconduct against black residents that are roiling the city and the Chicago Police Department, which is under a federal civil rights investigation.

Jury sides with Illinois man in excessive force lawsuit

BENTON – Jurors in southern Illinois have found in a federal civil lawsuit that an Olney man was the victim of excessive force when law enforcement officers stopped him near Benton in April 2012.

The jury verdict comes after a four-day trial at the federal courthouse in East St. Louis. It includes more than $32,000 in compensatory and punitive damages for 35-year-old Isaac Capps, who initially sought a $3.6 million settlement, the Southern Illinoisan reported.

Named as defendants in the case are three Illinois State Police troopers, two Franklin County deputies and a West Frankfort police officer.

Her biting comments followed an interview in which Sanders suggested Obama hadn’t succeeded in closing the gap between Congress and the American people – something Obama himself has acknowledged.

Sanders responded sharply: “Madam Secretary, that is a low blow.” And he noted that Clinton was the only one on the stage who ran against Obama in the 2008 presidential race.

After splitting this year’s first two states with Sanders, Clinton also renewed her assertion that her unexpectedly strong rival was energizing voters with promises “that cannot be kept.”

norities, Sanders peppered his typically economic-focused rhetoric with calls to reform a “broken criminal justice system.”

“At the end of my first term, we will not have more people in jail than any other country,” he said.

In one of many moments of agreement between the candidates, Clinton concurred on a need to address a criminal justice system that incarcerates a disproportionate number of minorities. But she cast her proposals for fighting racial inequality as broader than his.

“We’re going to emphasize education, jobs and housing,” said Clinton, who was endorsed earlier in the day by the political action committee of the Congressional Black Caucus.

Long viewed as the overwhelming front-runner in the Democratic race, Clinton has been caught off guard by Sanders’ strength, particularly his visceral connection with Americans frustrated by the current political and economic systems. Clinton’s own campaign message has looked muddled compared to his ringing call for a “political revolution,” and her connections to Wall Street have given Sanders an easy way to link her to the systems his supporters want to overhaul.

Seeking to stem Sanders’ momentum, Clinton’s campaign has argued that his appeal is limited to the white, liberal voters who make up the Democratic electorate in Iowa and New Hampshire.

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Congress voted Thursday to permanently bar state and local governments from taxing access to the Internet, as lawmakers leapt at an election-year chance to demonstrate their opposition to imposing levies on online service.

On a vote of 75-20, the Senate gave final congressional approval to the wide-ranging bill, which would also revamp trade laws. The White House said President Barack Obama will sign it.

“The Internet is a resource used dai-

ly by Americans of all ages,” said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., who brokered an agreement with a Democratic leader earlier this week that helped clear the way for passage.

“It’s important that they be able to do all of this without the worry of their Internet access being taxed.”

The ban on local Internet access taxes had broad support. Even so, some lawmakers remained unhappy over its trade provisions and because the measure omitted a separate, more controversial proposal to let states force online retailers to collect sales taxes for their transactions.

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said the bill was full of “missed opportunities and half-measures.”

Since 1998 in the Internet’s early days, Congress has passed a series of bills temporarily prohibiting state and local governments from imposing the types of monthly levies for online access that are common for telephone service.

Such legislation has been inspired by a popular sentiment that the Internet should be free, along with Republican opposition to most tax proposals.

Until now, states that imposed Internet access taxes have been allowed to continue. Under the approved bill, those

states would have to phase out their taxes by the summer of 2020.

Seven states – Hawaii, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Texas and Wisconsin – have been collecting a combined $563 million yearly from Internet access taxes, according to information gathered by the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service.

Forty-nine Republican and 26 Democratic senators backed the legislation Thursday while 17 Democrats and three Republicans voted “no.”

The House approved the compromise in December with the backing of nearly all Republicans but only 24 Democrats.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index has dropped 14 percent since peaking last summer, and it joined markets around the world in another slide on Thursday.

Worries are high that the sharp slowdown in China’s growth, falling U.S. corporate profits and other downward pressures will pull the economy back into a recession. If a garden-variety one is on the way, the stock market’s drop isn’t even halfway done.

Stocks have lost an average of 33 percent from top to bottom around past recessions, going back to 1929, according to a review by strategists at Credit Suisse.

they’re already pulling pages from the recession playbook. They’re moving into types of stocks and other investments that have typically held up best during past downturns and avoiding those that tend to get hit the worst.

The temptation to sell everything and get out of stocks can be costly, though.

Following every past recession, stocks have eventually gone on to recover their losses – and then climb higher.

Every downturn is different, but a

look at the numbers gives investors a sense of at least what’s possible. Here’s what they show: How bad are recessions for stocks usually?

Future upscale apartments need parking It would be nice if people in DeKalb had the option not to own a car, but for most people, that’s not the case.

Ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft remain nonexistent here, although there are some conventional taxi services. The tracks that cut through downtown carry only freight trains. Although there are some walkable destinations and some bus transportation options provided by the Voluntary Action Center, most people opt to have a car if they can afford it and are able to drive.

We would expect people who would live in the luxury apartments that Shodeen wants to build west of downtown DeKalb to be auto owners.

If Shodeen wants to create a new development that will add hundreds of people to 4½ acres west of downtown DeKalb, it needs to have a plan to accommodate their vehicles. That should include not only parking stalls, but also charging stations for electric vehicles.

The developer’s plan as it stands would not do that. It calls for a 128-room hotel, and a luxury apartment complex with 459 bedrooms, but only 464 parking spaces.

By the city’s rules, the apartment complex alone should have almost 700 spaces – 1½ spaces for each bedroom.

That’s a rule that the city has been willing to bend before, notably in the case of University Village last year. But it’s hard to see how the amount of parking being proposed will support the density.

There seem to be options for another parking lot in the area. One is the vacant building at the corner of First Street and Lincoln Highway. The consensus among city officials seems to be that the structure should be demolished, but the location seems too high visibility to devote entirely to a parking garage.

Some are complaining that with enrollment declining at NIU, the last thing the city needs is more rental property.

We agree that trying to tailor a development specifically to the needs of students might be a mistake. However, vacancy rates among rental properties at large should not be the council’s chief concern.

When new competitors emerge, existing landlords often must either improve the quality of their own properties or lower their rents to compete.

There are signs that there might soon be more people in the rental market – at least one major local employer, Target, has said it plans to add hundreds of new jobs this year.

It’s important that the city council and Shodeen work together on a plan that will fit with the area and make financial sense. Downtown DeKalb could benefit from having more people in the area, and residents have wanted to see something happen on Shodeen’s property for years.

We will wait to see what compromises the developer and city staff can reach and hope to see a modified plan come to the city council later this year.

Of the 105,462 people in the county, a little over 20,000 of them need a mental health professional.

Syverson needs to start representing us, not Gov. Rauner.

I understand the angry response of many young women, but when the outrage turns to rancor and declarations of her irrelevance, I bristle.

Gloria Steinem has been a steadfast champion of this millennial generation of women, many of whom have likely never said her name aloud before this week. At 81, she has earned our benefit of the doubt.

It didn’t help that, in the same weekend, former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright stood next to Hillary Clinton and warned younger women, “There’s a special place in [heck] for women who don’t help each other.” She has said the same thing countless times, often to rapturous cheers, but her timing

was off.

At 58, I’m young enough to have found Steinem and Albright inspiring for many years. I even admire their impatience in this presidential year. It is comforting to see a small part of me in my heroes.

How to explain this? I think about that a lot. It’s not that I believe young women have to support Hillary Clinton.

I just want them to understand why it’s so personal for many of us who do. We can rattle off all herqualifications as the reasons to elect her, and we mean it.

But there’s also the woman-ness of it all. Why are we still such a tough sell, even to one another?

In our family, three daughters and a daughter-in-law have careers and young children and a sense of self that triggers a deep longing in me. Sometimes I watch them and wonder, “Who are you?”

It is a question of awe, not envy, and a reflection of my own what-ifs. Who might I be now had I been like them in my 20s? It took me so much longer to turn up the dimmer on my own ambition.

Not this generation. Everywhere I go, it seems, I meet young women who leave me breathless. They are teaching and preaching and delivering babies.

Once a year, one of them calms my

nerves before she walks behind the wall and tells me to hold my breath for the mammogram.

Sometimes, I am at my clumsiest with them, feeing a rush of unearned pride. Who am I, a stranger, to take glory in these young women’s lives? I feel so silly, so full of this song in my heart.

Finally, it seems, I understand how my own mother felt as she watched her daughters leave her behind to navigate a world she had never imagined for herself. Days before she died, she told me she wished she had stuck up for herself more in her marriage.

I braced myself and said, “What would you have done differently, Mom?” She lifted her weak, manicured hand and pointed to her head. “I would have dyed my hair red,” she said. “And I would have had cats.”

They used to ask for so little, the women in my family.

Maybe that, too, is why I want it all.

Big differences between Trump and Sanders

The stunningly handy wins by two anti-establishment candidates in the New Hampshire primary Tuesday are prompting conversation about similarities between New York businessman Donald Trump, the Republican victor, and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, the socialist victor on the Democratic side.

The similarities are important – but the differences are more so.

Both have positioned themselves as outsiders appealing to voters who believe the system, and the leaders of the two major parties, have failed them.

The grievances they speak to are real: a sense that the economy has left too many people behind, that globalization and technological change are helping the few while stranding the many.

Trump and Sanders offer convenient scapegoats and simple-sounding solutions. For Sanders, the “greed” of

the “billionaire class” has rigged the system against working people. Tax the 1 percent, and everyone can have free college and free health care. Political obstacles can be swept away by a “political revolution.” America’s enemies will be fought by a mythical Sunni Muslim coalition.

Trump’s villains are “stupid” people running the government who allow foreigners to take advantage of the United States. His solution is to elect Trump.

We think both men are dangerously if seductively wrong in their facile diagnoses and prescriptions. But Sanders’ platform is at least well-meaning. We think forcing working people to subsidize, through their taxes, the college tuition of wealthier Americans is not a progressive policy; we believe Sanders has not leveled with Americans about the true costs of single-payer health

care. But few would object in theory to more widely available education and health care.

By contrast, Trump’s proposals are pernicious as well as preposterous.

There is no way to round up 11 million illegal immigrants and deport them – but no one should want to live in a nation that would attempt such a thing.

Nor would most Americans want a government that deliberately kills the innocent relatives of terrorists.

Trump is mocking the democratic process, not engaging in it. He feels no obligation to explain how he would implement his ideas, and he does not care whether his statements are true.

Thousands of Muslims in New Jersey did not publicly celebrate the downing of the World Trade Center towers in 2001, but Trump is content simply to repeat the lie. And lies come easily to

Trump because, unlike Sanders, he does not believe in anything other than his own brilliance.

Some may take comfort in his malleability. Once he is in office, they say, Trump will become a dealmaker, susceptible to establishment whisperings.

In this they deceive themselves, and the evidence lies in the most essential difference between these two outsider campaigns: the utter ugliness of Trump’s. To further his ambition, he has gleefully demeaned Hispanics, Muslims, Jews, people with disabilities, blacks and anyone else he can present as the “other” as he proceeds to exploit the nation’s divisions.

As president, he would not be able to deliver on his promises, and it is fearful to contemplate the scapegoats he might find to distract from his failures.

The last time I stood in front of Gloria Steinem, in the fall of 2012, she spent little time talking to me.

Instead, she trained her laser-focus on the 24-year-old woman next to me.

This was my daughter, whose favorite doll in early childhood was a blonde Cabbage Patch girl named Gloria Steinem.

We were in Hartford for a sold-out panel discussion for the Connecticut Forum – featuring Ashley Judd, Michelle Bernard, Gloria and me – on “The State of Women.”

When Cait heard that I would be less than two hours from her home in Providence, Rhode Island, she considered driving up. When I told her Gloria Steinem was also on the panel, I closed the deal. What I remember most about that evening was the glow on my daughter’s face as Gloria leaned in and asked her about her life.

I couldn’t recount a word of their exchange, but I will never forget the full-circle joy that blurred my vision.

I share this story not to excuse what Gloria said on Bill Maher’s show last week but to explain why I won’t let one clumsy comment diminish who I know her to be.

Injured Picolotti gets emotional bucket

ecarifio@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – On a senior night in which six of the seven Sycamore seniors scored and the Spartans beat Morris, 55-34, it was Morgan Picolotti, knee brace and all, who stole the show in the regular-season finale for both teams.

Having her season come to an end with a injured ACL and lateral meniscus in the first quarter of the first game of the season, Picolotti started the game on the floor for the Spartans (20-6, 11-2 Northern Illinois Big 12 East). After Sycamore allowed Morris (7-19, 4-9) to win the tip uncontested and score, the Spartans worked the ball up the court uncontested, getting it to Picolotti who nailed the shot. She left the game after scoring her first and only points of her senior season.

“It was unbelievable,” Picolotti said after the game, fighting back tears.

“I couldn’t be more thankful for my coach, my teammates, everyone that was here to support me.”

Picolotti was expected to be a sharp-shooting starter after a junior year that showed glimpses as a backup, but the injury derailed those plans. Coach Brett Goff approached her with the idea.

“He told me about two weeks ago, and pulled me aside with my dad and was like, ‘I really want to see you on the court again,’ ” Picolotti said. “I was speechless. I cried, of course. It’s just one of those things that’s just unbelievable.”

The Spartans built up a 28-6 lead in the second quarter, but Morris scored 13 straight between the second and third quarters, using its press to force turnovers – Sycamore committed eight turnovers in the third quarter and 16 for the game.

“We had some strong

moments,” Morris coach Kate Carey said. “I think we came out a little softer than we usually do. I thought the girls made a nice adjustment at halftime turning on the defense we should have been playing the whole game.”

Goff said he was impressed that his team stayed focus through the start of the game, but thought the effort during Morris’ run could have been better.

“I was happy we came out and focused the best we could,” Goff said. “We got a little lackadaisical in parts, but overall I thought we played well. It was a good night.”

Morris’ Mya Shannon led all scorers with 14 points.

“She always does (have a big game) – she’s a great player for us,” Carey said.

“She’s never going to give up. She’s going to go hard no matter what. It’s tough, our shooting has been ice cold and this was one of her better shooting games, so that was good for us.”

Lauren Goff scored 13 for the Spartans with Chole Goff adding 10.

Taiya Hopkins had eight points and six rebounds.

Brett Goff said he was particularly happy with the way the season ended for Picolotti.

“We planned that out in advance, and she’s a very special young lady,” Goff said. “She had a heartbreaking injury in the beginning of the year, first game. It doesn’t get much worse than that. And I want to thank the Morris coach for really, she didn’t have to do that but she was very accommodating and very gracious.”

Picolotti said it was a nice ending to a hard season.

“It’s been very tough,” Picolotti said. “But like I said, my teammates, my friends, my family, everyone who has been so supportive – I’m so lucky to have everyone I do have.”

GARDNER – The Indian Creek girls’ basketball team long list of accomplishments this season just got a little longer.

After winning holiday tournaments at IMSA and Amboy, the Little Ten Conference Tournament and league title, the No. 1-seeded Timberwolves won the Class 1A Gardner-South Wilmington Regional title over No. 4 Newark, 4931, on Thursday.

With the win, the Timberwolves are now 28-1 overall entering Monday’s Serena Sectional. The Norsemen ended the season at 18-10 overall.

This was Indian Creek’s second regional title in three years and third overall since the school opened in 1993.

“It was nice to get this one,” Indian Creek coach Paul Muchmore said. “They played hard. It’s huge.

I think we have a shot at the sectional. That’s the goal – to get in at least the finals. I’m really proud of the kids. They played hard and never gave up.”

With Newark leading 31-30 after six straight points from Jasmine Mitchell with 1:59 left in the third quarter, Indian Creek ended the game on a 19-0 run and kept the Norsemen scoreless in the final frame.

“The ball did not go in the basket,” Newark coach Barb Scott said. “Plain and simple. But I thought we gave them a great run.

I liked (our chances). I thought all the pressure was on Indian Creek, and the longer the game went on, the more I liked our chances. We just couldn’t quite get it done at the end.”

There were three ties in the first half before Kelsea Zitt’s free throw in the closing seconds gave Newark the 22-21 advantage going into to the break.

“It was a real scramble for us,” Muchmore said. “We struggled early. We didn’t hit from the outside, but I told them to hang with it.”

Indian Creek started the third quarter on a 9-1 run and led 30-23 after a bucket from Madison Russell with 4:10 on the clock. Mitchell then went on her run for Newark’s final lead of the game.

Indian Creek was led by Alexis VanWhye (12 points) and both Russell and MaKayli Vann each finished with 11 points. Pitt led the Norsemen with 13 points.

Yorkville cruises past DeKalb Barbs look forward to returning eight players to varsity roster next season

sports@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – It wasn’t the ideal senior night for the DeKalb girls basketbal team. The Yorkville Foxes were able to cruise to a 52-32 victory Thursday night.

For the Barbs (7-21), Thursday was a night to celebrate the present as well as look into the future. While they will be graduating seven seniors this year, they will be returning eight players to the varsity roster next season, something that coach Heath Kent said he is very much looking forward to.

“Those underclassmen have been playing a lot of minutes for us this year,” Kent said. “They’ve been learning under fire, and we’ve got to take our lumps now so we can be better down the road. Learning how to win is a process, and I hope that we can do that while learning to be consistent for all four quarters.”

Kent also was very complimentary of his seniors.

“They were awesome,” Kent said.

DeKalb senior Alyssa Burgess is considered a leader on the team. In Thursday’s loss, she had five rebounds to go along with three points. Her postgame message to her teammates that will be returning next season was a strong mixture of love, dedication and

senior wisdom.

“Keep working hard. During practice, if you goof off, it will translate into the games,” Burgess said. “You have to have a winning attitude. No matter how good they are or what other people say about them, walk into the game like you’re going to win.”

That message was echoed by DeKalb’s sophomore guard Raquel Mills. To go along with her three steals, she added a basket and a huge chase-down block that got the crowd’s attention late in the fourth quarter.

“We need to grow together as a

team and bond more,” Mills said. “The boy’s team has a great bond together, so we need to work on that. We also have got to practice harder and make sure that we are using the offseason to get better.”

The Foxes (24-2) were able to steal the ball eight times on defense to prevent the Barbs from getting much going offensively. It was the kind of effort on defense that Yorkville junior point guard Audrey Macciomei said can be contagious.

“We hustled to loose balls and never let up,” Macciomei said. “If one person dives on the floor for a loose ball, then another person is going to do the same thing. Coach (Luke Engelhardt) really makes us work on that in practice and keep the intensity as gamelike as possible.”

Senior guard Sydney Beach got in on the defensive effort as well, adding four steals to go along with her 10 points and two assists on the night.

The Foxes also shot from the perimeter pretty well, connecting six times from beyond the three-point arc.

Stars score early and often, close in on first-place Hawks

mlazerus@suntimes.com Joel Quenneville stuck around a little longer in his postgame press conference Thursday night after the Blackhawks faceplanted in a 4-2 loss to the Dallas Stars. But he wasn’t much happier. And this time, he had only his players to blame for a loss.

“That was a statement loss,” Quenneville said.

“It was a terrible, brutal, brutal first period. … It was like we had Ringette sticks tonight – no blade on our sticks.”

The Hawks were a week removed from a statement victory in Dallas, a 5-1 shellacking that appeared to put the Stars back in their place as a contender to the Hawks’ throne. Stars coach Lindy Ruff said his team was “embarrassed” by that effort and wanted to do something about it. They did, chasing Corey Crawford with a four-goal first period – including a hat trick by low-scoring Patrick Eaves – to move within one point of the first-place Hawks, who have opened their four-game road trip with two straight demoralizing losses. Dallas has three games in hand, too.

“We expected that they were going to come out hard, given the fact that they had a rough game and didn’t play their best against us, last time we were in their building,” Hawks captain Jonathan Toews said. “I guess we just weren’t prepared to respond to that.”

The Hawks outshot the Stars 21-2 in the third period, getting goals by Duncan Keith and Patrick Kane to end the team’s scoreless streak at more than 123 minutes and at least make a game of it.

But Dallas finished off a huge penalty kill midway through the third, then finished off the victory.

It’s no coincidence that the Hawks have looked punchless without Artemi Panarin, who missed his second straight game with an illness. His absence has a ripple effect throughout the lineup, with Richard Panik – one of the few Hawks who showed any sign of life in the first two periods – getting a turn on the usually prolific second line.

Quenneville put Kane on Toews’ line in the third, but it was too little, too late.

“I think anytime you’re missing one of your top players, it’s going to have an effect on everyone,” Kane said. “Hopefully, he gets better soon.”

The lifeless effort dampened an otherwise upbeat atmosphere, as Patrick Sharp made his return to the United Center. Sharp had been back already, but it was a preseason game, and, honestly, nobody cares about preseason games. He had faced his old teammates twice already during the regular season, but that was in Dallas, surrounded by friendly green-clad fans and somebody else’s banners, so it wasn’t quite the same. This was different. This was the big one. And it was his 800th career game, no less.

During the morning skate, Sharp couldn’t help but look up at the rafters, where that 2015 Stanley Cup champions banner hung. It was the first time he’d seen it. Well, the first time he’d seen it in person.

“Yeah, I saw it,” Sharp said. “I watched that whole ceremony the first game of the season. Got me pretty pumped up to play; wish I was part of it.

But you look up at the banners and it’s something to be proud of, and I certainly am of my time here in Chicago.”

Sharp said it’ll always be a little weird to come back to Chicago, where he spent the bulk of his career, where he won three championships, where he became an all-time fan favorite. And when he got a lengthy video tribute – set to Pearl Jam, of course – he was visibly struggling to hold his emotions in check, letting out a lengthy sigh and waving his right hand to the standing fans, a bittersweet halfsmile on his face.

“I have a lot of good memories, a lot of good feelings,” he said before the game. “Looking forward to playing the game.”

Ah, yes, the game – two big points at stake between the top two teams in the Western Conference. Dallas. The Stars showed up for it. The Hawks arrived far too late.

Lions hosts Genoa-Kingston Spelling Bee DAILY CHRONICLE

The Genoa Lions invited the 12 finalists in the district spelling bee to dinner Jan. 20 at the Masonic Temple in Genoa.

Three students in fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth grades were successful in their class spelling bees and were ready to spell their way to the regionals to be held at Kishwaukee College in March.

The winner of this year’s Genoa-Kingston Spelling Bee was Natalie Wells, a sixth-grader at Genoa Middle School and the daughter of Scott and Tammy Wells of Genoa. The second-place winner was Katrina Slavenas, daughter of Lori and Eric Slavenas of Kingston. She is a fifth-grader at Genoa Elementary School. The third-place speller and alternate was Joely Overstreet.

Dinner was hosted by Lions President Bob Becker and the Genoa Lions Club, which provided the trophies for the first- and second-place winners.

Genoa’s McDonald’s donated a $10

Arch Card for each contestant.

Principals Angelo Lekkas and John Francis were in attendance, as was G-K Superintendent Joe Burgess.

Craig Butcher, assistant principal at Genoa-Kingston Middle School, was the moderator and emcee for the spelling bee.

Emily Fowler organized the spelling bee and was assisted in judging by Lekkas and Katie Schumacher. FFA members attend conference DAILY CHRONICLE

Several Sycamore FFA students and the two Sycamore ag teachers attended the annual 212° Leadership Conference on Jan. 29-30 in Schaumburg.

The conference is an activity of the National FFA Organization made possible by title sponsor Syngenta as a special project of the National FFA Foundation.

212° – the temperature at which water boils – focuses on taking students to the boiling point of personal leadership. At 211° water is extremely hot, but just one more degree gets us to the next level.

The two-day 212° Leadership Conference focuses on

student development and helps FFA members become aware of all aspects of personal growth. FFA members attended sessions on mental, emotional, physical and social growth. Students leave this experience with a personal plan for self-improvement.

This school year, more than 7,500 students across the nation will participate in a 212° or 360° Leadership Conference.

The National FFA Organization provides leadership, personal growth and career success training through agricultural education to 629,367 student members who belong to 7,757 FFA chapters throughout the U.S., Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

Mary von Zellen will give a presentation on Vittoria Colonna today at the DeKalb Area Women’s Center as part of the Historical Women Series being offered on Friday nights by members of the center.

Colonna was born in April 1492 and died in Feb. 1547 and was a noblewoman from Naples who wrote poetry and was involved in literacy circles.

Many women throughout history have made meaningful contributions to the world, but few received adequate recognition. Some of these unknown women will be the focus of the series, which continues through March 4.

Presentations will include a video on Hildegard of Bingen on Feb. 26, and a video Marc 4 starring actress Hedy Lamarr who was also a successful inventor.

The center’s Hertorical Tea will be at 2 p.m.

March 13.

The series presentations will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. They are free and open to the public.

Men are welcome to attend. DAWC is at 1021 State St. in DeKalb.

Ten years ago, Sycamore United Methodist Church honored Nancy Miller at its Christmas Choral Celebration for 50 years of service in the Adult Choir. At the 2015 production, Miller was honored for 60 years of faithful singing.

Music Director Bev Rauch asked some of Miller’s choir friends, Carol Keneway and Saundra Huftalin, to arrange for a surprise gift, so they commissioned SUMC member Cheryl Callighan to create a beautiful mosaic garden stone that incorporated music notes, the number 60, a cross, etc.

Miller has sung under nine music directors at the church, including much solo work. When she was in the eighth grade, someone heard her singing in the children’s choir and remarked, “You should sing in the Adult Choir!”

When she’s not performing music, Miller enjoys spending time with her extensive family in the area, including her husband, Gene, a local farmer, and various creative pursuits.

SUMC has an active and nurturing music program, and welcomes others to experience the praise and fellowship that Miller and the other members enjoy.

Bob Pritchard, R-Hinckley, was one of four individuals named “Legislator of the Year” during the Illinois Association of Park Districts convention for his efforts in supporting park district programs and responding to park district issues.

Others recognized were Rep. Carol Sente, Sen. Christine Radogno and Sen. Thomas Cullerton.

Pritchard, said over the years he has seen how well-run park districts become a major asset for their communities.

“Parks and their programs attract new residents, engage residents in constructive activities and encourage healthy life styles. I have been impressed by not only park district summer activities for youth, but also their after school, food nutrition, and educational programming throughout the year,” he said in a press release.

“As one concerned about the natural environment, parks provide open space for people in our towns and cities to enjoy the beauty of nature, find inner peace and provide sanctuaries for future generations,” he said in the release.

The legislator said he was fortunate to have a number of outstanding park districts in his area that inform him about issues and give him background that is helpful during legislative debate.

Immanuel Lutheran Church, 511 Russell Road in DeKalb, is offering a Lenten series on Wednesdays.

Written by seminary professor Joel Biermann, each service in the series focuses on a certain event in the Lenten story and takes a good look at a broken element from that story.

Coming to an understanding of how each of these broken elements leads to restoration in Christ is the key to understanding what it ultimately means to live today as new creations in Christ.

On Wednesday, the guest preacher will be the Rev. Jeremy Heilman from Trinity Lutheran Church in Genoa. The title of his sermon will be “Broken Trust Restored,” based on Matthew 26: 14-25. The sermon will detail how Judas breaks his trust with Jesus by betraying him; our broken trust is restored through the sacrifice of Christ.

Services are conducted at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. The Church Council will serve a cookout dinner with Inbodens brats, burgers and hot dogs beginning at 5:15 p.m. and prior to the service A free will offering will benefit the mission of the host group.

Children’s art class offered at Faith UMC

Faith United Methodist Church will host a free winter art class for children in preschool through fifth grade from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 17 and 24.

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church hosts Lenten retreat

A Lenten retreat will be offered by St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 900 Normal Road in DeKalb, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 pm.

The retreat is free and open to men and women wishing to set aside at least one day during Lent for to learn some new approaches to prayer, offered in quiet and creative ways.

The retreat will be led by the Rev. Stacy Walker-Frontjes, rector of St. Paul’s, and Marilyn Cleland, congregant. A soup lunch will be offered.

The facilitator told us to make sure we always use the gender pronoun preferred by the person we are talking to or about. But she didn’t give any guidance about how to know what those pronouns are if it’s not clear from someone’s outward appearance. Additionally, I have learned I’m not very good at guessing.

Is there a polite way to ask someone if they prefer to be called he or she? What about people who don’t use either? It seems as if there’s a lot of opportunity to offend someone. I’d hate to upset anyone by using the wrong pronoun, but I also don’t want to admit to the person I can’t tell if he or she is a man or woman.

It’s like walking in a minefield. – What’s Right?

Dear What’s Right: This is such new territory, it might take a while for the general public to adjust.

However, the person’s name should be a clue about which gender he or she identifies with. While I wouldn’t recommend asking what gender the person is, it wouldn’t be inappropriate to use the word “they” when speaking about the person because that pronoun is being used more in the singular.

Dear Abby: I am a divorced father who recently has remarried. I have parenting time with my children one weeknight and every other weekend.

My children have told me during the week they prefer doing their homework at their mother’s home. They say by the time I pick them up, prepare dinner and they start their homework, it’s already time to return to their mother’s. They are at ages where homework assignments can take several hours.

My ex is OK with me spending time with them at her home. She uses the time to run errands and do other things she might not have time for during the week. When there’s no school, I bring the kids to our house. All weekend parenting time takes place at my home.

The problem is, my current wife can’t stand that I spend time with my children at my ex’s home. She doesn’t understand why I won’t bring them here. I feel there’s ample opportunity on the weekends for my kids to be at our house and for her to build a relationship with them.

Academics are crucial at this point in their lives.

So – do I disrupt their homework to accommodate my wife? Or should I continue the arrangement my kids, my former wife and I have established? – Parent-

Social phobia can be overcome Dear Dr. K: I’ve always thought of myself as shy. But my partner thinks I might have social phobia. Could he be right?

Dear Reader: “Social phobia” goes well beyond shyness. People with social phobia feel a constant and powerful discomfort, self-consciousness and fear of humiliation in ordinary social situations. They feel as though all eyes are turned on them. Social phobia often leads people to avoid parties and other gatherings.

Most people don’t think twice about mingling with new acquaintances. But people with social phobia can have disturbing symptoms.

They may blush, sweat, tremble, feel nauseated and have difficulty talking. Being part of a social gathering may trigger a panic attack.

During panic attacks, people have shortness of breath, sweating, rapid heartbeat, chest pain or a smothering sensation.

If you think you might have social phobia, answer the following questions. If you answer yes to three or more, you might have social phobia. If so, talk to your doctor about your concerns.

• Do you avoid certain situations because you are afraid you’ll embarrass yourself?

• Do you sometimes panic in unfamiliar social situations?

• Do you avoid social situations whenever possible?

• When you can’t avoid social situations, do they cause significant distress or anxiety?

• Does your distress or fear of social gatherings interfere significantly with your work? Relationships with friends and family?

Normal routines?

If you do have social phobia, a doctor probably will recommend medication plus therapy.

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), a type of antidepressant, usually are tried first. They often are prescribed with a

These medicines usually are combined with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Two forms of CBT are especially beneficial: anxiety management training and cognitive restructuring.

Anxiety management teaches relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing, to help control anxiety. Cognitive restructuring teaches people how to recognize the thought processes that lead to the phobia. It then teaches how to reframe those thoughts and replace them with more productive thinking. Group CBT and social skills training also can help build confidence in social situations.

I once had a patient with an unusual kind of social phobia. A quiet and studious person, by day he was an accountant. That was how he made a living. But he also was musically gifted and had a good voice. Sometimes in the evenings, he would play guitar and sing folk music at local clubs. Immediately after each performance, he always dashed out of the club – before people in the audience could find him. That was because he developed severe anxiety symptoms when mingling with other people. When he could perform from a stage and didn’t have to mingle with the audience, he was fine – so long as they liked his performance. And they always did.

It is easy for declarer to be careless near the beginning of this deal.

How should South play in three notrump after West leads a fourth-highest club six to the 10 and jack?

North’s three-club rebid was New Minor Forcing. He was hoping his partner could show three-card heart support. However, when South indicated only a doubleton heart, North signed off in three no-trump.

South starts with eight top tricks: three spades, one heart, three diamonds and one club (at trick one). He can get the extra winner from either red suit -- but which should he attack first?

Most players would realize that taking the heart finesse is too dangerous. If it loses, East will return a club through South’s king and into the jaws of West’s ace-queen. Here, West would take four tricks in that suit to defeat the contract.

Instead, many declarers would play a diamond to dummy’s ace and return a diamond to their king -- and suddenly find that they could no longer make the contract. East would gain the lead in one red suit or the other.

South should take a safety-finesse, covering dummy’s diamond nine with his 10. Here, declarer would end with an overtrick. But even if West could take the trick, the contract would be safe.
