Newton to get another chance next season POLL Poor Cam Newton.

The Carolina Panthers quarterback was the biggest personality on either team in Super Bowl 50. He was the NFL’s regular-season MVP. He and his team were the heavy favorites to win the Super Bowl … and then they didn’t deliver.

Newton and his teammates got trounced in one of the most boring Super Bowls I can remember, and Newton was sulky about it, walking out of his postgame news conference after giving a few short answers.

Out came the knives of all the people who said they didn’t like his style, and even some who had helped to build him up during his success turned on him after Sunday’s display.

Such is the life cycle of a public figure: It’s pretty common to go from hero to goat.

We love celebrities in America, including pro athletes. Two of our favorite things to do with celebrities (other than ogle the pretty ones) are build them up into heroes and idols, and then tear them down.

No one’s safe from taking a turn, whether you’re one of the most successful golfers of all time (Tiger Woods) or one of Hollywood’s top leading men (Tom Cruise).

But I don’t worry too much about Newton.

He’s 26, and he’s only a year into a five-year, $103 million contract that came with a $22.5 million signing bonus.

Besides, once next season starts, he’ll have a chance to be a hero again. The other thing America is good about is giving people second chances.

An autopsy was conducted Tuesday on a DeKalb County Jail inmate who died Monday after drinking jailhouse booze, but a cause of death has yet to be determined, DeKalb County Coroner Dennis Miller said.

Brandon A. Washington, 28, of Rochelle, died early Monday at Kishwaukee Hospital after falling ill inside his cell, police said. Samples needed for toxicology tests have been sent to an out-of-state lab, where they will be analyzed and the results sent back, Miller said.

Police said Washington was unconscious when they found him inside his cell about 2 a.m.

Monday. Deputies gave him CPR before he was taken to Kishwaukee Hospital, according to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office. Washington died at the hospital at 2:34 a.m., police said. Story, page 9.

The Northern Illinois Chinese Music Ensemble will perform tonight at the DeKalb Public Library to celebrate the Chinese New Year.

The music ensemble will incorporate a lion and dragon dance into their music performances.

17 percent of workforce will be laid off if proposal is approved

rgillespie@shawmedia.com MALTA – Kishwaukee College plans to help close an anticipated $3.8 million budget hole next fiscal year by laying off 17 percent of its workforce, according to a reduction plan the college’s new president presented Tuesday.

President Laurie Borowicz told Board of Trustees members that the deficit includes $2.5 million in state aid the college budgeted for the current fiscal year but never received.

Kishwaukee College depends on state aid for 22 percent of its budget, she said.

Also factoring into the shortfall is money lost because of decreased enrollment this 2015-16 academic year.

Thirty-one employees will be let go, as of July 1, the start of the college’s fiscal 2017, although officials wouldn’t say which departments or areas would see the dismissals. The college expects to save $1 million with the layoffs and $1.1 million with not filling other vacant positions. The austerity plan also calls for working to increase revenues by $1.2 million, Borowicz said.

“This is a tough, tough process for our college,” said Borowicz, who started Jan. 11.

She said the college projected a 6.5 percent decrease in enrollment this school year, but actually experienced an 8.8 percent one. That translated to a $275,000 loss in tuition and fees revenue.

About 3,860 students registered for class in the fall, with 3,355 signed up for spring semester.

“When the state money is received, all of our budget issues will not be resolved because we have an enrollment problem,” Borowicz said.

She said the community college has already dipped into its savings, spending $4.4 million of the $6 million it had at the start of the fiscal year.

The board has until next month to review the plan Borowicz presented Tuesday. Chairman Bob Johnson said trustees are most likely going to pass it.

Kishwaukee College, located five miles west of the Northern Illinois University campus, employs 165 fulltime staff and administrators and 82 full-time faculty. The part-time employees include 144 adjunct instructors and 46 staffers, according to its data.

The president of the union that represents the college’s support staff said talks of cutting employees emerged last fall. He expects that 1019 support staffers will be laid off, and nine more positions won’t be filled.

“Our contract provides for a reduction in [work] force, if necessary,” said Dave Bresson, who also works at the college as a database administrator. “This is a very difficult time for everyone, but this is within the college’s power to do as long as they follow the contract.”

The board previously approved a savings plan that included the college not filling vacant positions, cutting back on travel expenses and holding off on capital projects. Officials said that belt-tightening also saved jobs for this fiscal year, which ends June 30.

Illinois is now in its eighth month without a budget. Republican and Democratic lawmakers blame each other for the impasse.

“I’m frustrated that the state has not come to a conclusion on a budget agreement,” said state Sen. Dave Syverson, R-Rockford, whose 35th District includes Kishwaukee College. “I’m also frustrated that some leaders in the Legislature have held community colleges ransom.”

Democrats passed a bill last month that would have funded the state’s 48 community colleges, including Kishwaukee. But Gov. Bruce Rauner’s of-

fice confirmed that he will veto the appropriations package.

Syverson called the Democrats’ plan a a “scam, because they put no funding with it,” Syverson said.

“Even if the governor signed it, Kishwaukee would not have received a penny.”

Democrats have criticized the governor for making some appropriation approvals contingent on agreements to move what Rauner calls his turnaround agenda. A Republican bill recently introduced funds all of higher education, but is dependent on another bill passing that gives the governor some financial discretion.

“We’re not providing any public support to our public universities and colleges. That’s all because of the stance the governor has taken over the state’s budget. He caused this. He can end it,” said state Senate President John Cullerton, D-Chicago.

District 427 hears proposal including districtwide layoffs

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Sycamore School District 427 board members on Tuesday considered a proposal to eliminate 56 positions districtwide.

The cuts could mean laying off more than 14 teachers, including physical education, music, art and technology staff, Superintendent Kathy Countryman said. Responsibility for those classes would be redistributed to other employees.

“We made all the cuts Kathy we can to programming, Countryman and to getting our budget in line, and getting our fixed costs down as much as possible and there’s no where else to go,” board President Jim Dombek said.

District officials presented the board with a $2.5 million budget reduction plan at its last meeting, but board members said they needed to cut back even more. This is the second year of the board-approved, three-year, $3.8 million budget reduction plan. District 427 began the school year facing a $2.3 million deficit.

“This is the most difficult part of

meeting that budget goal, and so we do not take it lightly,” Countryman said.

Other possible layoffs include more than three certified support team or elective positions, 15 full-time-equivalent paraeducators and one full-time-equivalent technology staff position. An additional two full-time paraeducator positions could become part-time.

“This is a difficult thing to fathom; it’s a difficult thing to deal with and face up to,” Dombek said. “Each and every one of these teachers is someone we selected to be here for a specific purpose ... it really makes it extremely difficult to have to deal with this.”

Additionally, transportation for Sycamore High School students enrolled in “zero hour” courses, or classes that start before the regular school day, could be eliminated, and a new teacher mentoring program is at the risk of being cut.

The board will hear budget presentations from different departments Feb. 16, 17 and 18 and there will be a public hearing about the reductions 7 p.m. Feb. 23, at which point the board will vote whether to move ahead with the proposal.

If the cutbacks are approved, no layoffs will be made until March 8 for the district’s certified staff, and April 12 for the district’s classified staff.

Belvidere man taken to hospital after rollover crash

GENOA – A Belvidere man required treatment for injures that were not life-threatening after driving off the road and rolling his car multiple times, DeKalb County Sheriff’s police said.

Cristobal J. Leon, 22, of the 2100 block of Tobyne Road, Belvidere, was headed north Monday on Genoa Road, north of Cherry Valley Road when he accidentally drove off the side of the road and the car rolled multiple times, according to a news release.

The Genoa-Kingston Fire Department transported Leon to Kishwaukee Hospital, where he has since been treated for non-life-threatening injuries and released.

Leon’s 2006 Mitsubishi was towed and he was cited for improper lane use and driving without a

valid license.

DeKalb Fire Department investigating house fire

DeKALB – The DeKalb Fire Department is investigating the cause of a fire that caused $30,000 damage to a home Monday night, according to a news release.

The fire department responded to a call in the 21000 block of Donnybrook Lane just after 10 p.m. and discovered smoke and flames in the attic. Firefighters extinguished the flames and aired out the rest of the house.

Fire crews were on the scene for several hours after the fire to make sure it didn’t rekindle or extend to other areas of the house. Maple Park and Sycamore fire departments assisted with the fire.

A cause has not been determined.

OBITUARIES ROBERT C. FURJANIC Born: Aug. 12, 1923 Died: Feb. 7, 2016

Robert C. Furjanic, 92, of Rochelle, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at Serenity Hospice & Home on February 7, 2016.

Bob was born on August 12, 1923, to Joseph and Mary (Ostrowski) Furjanic in Chicago, IL. He married Rose Shuleff in 1947. He was later remarried to LaVaun (Bonnie) Morrison from March 1975 to June 2014 until she passed away.

Bob received a battlefield commission prior to the Battle of the Bulge in WWII. He remained in the Army Reserve for over 35 years and attained the rank of lieutenant colonel before retiring. Upon returning home from the war, he took advantage of the benefits under the G.I. Bill and graduated from Northern Illinois State Teachers College (now NIU) with a degree in education. He accepted a teaching position at Malta Elementary School for two years prior to joining the Prudential Insurance Co. as the Rochelle area agent for the next 33 years until he retired. On occasion, he also was a substitute teacher at Central School and the high school.

Bob also served as fire & police commissioner for one term and on the City Council from 1979-1983. He spent his retirement years traveling, spoiling his grandchildren, and enjoying life.

He was a loving father to five children, Robert R.(Sheila) Furjanic, Croton, NY; Nicolette

(Tony) Merridy, Queens Village, NY; Stephen (Patricia) Morrison, Mount Pleasant, SC, Melinda (John) Condon of Floral City, FL and Lisa (Jonathan) Dreyer, Antioch, IL; seven grandchildren, Cheryl Furjanic, Michael Furjanic, Aaron Dreyer, Sara Dreyer, John Condon, Cameron Morrison, Nicholas Morrison; and one great grandchild, Cal Vaughn Patterson.

He was a dear brother of Charles (Sandra) Furjanic; and brother-in-law to Violet Furjanic as well as a fond uncle for many nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, February 13, 2016, at the Unger-Horner Funeral Home, 400 N. 6th St., Rochelle, IL with nephew, Matthew Furjanic, officiating.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. on Friday, February 12th and from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. prior to the service. Cremation rites will follow the service with interment at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

Memorials may be made to the Rochelle Fire Department Ambulance Fund in lieu of flowers.

JAMES M. LITTLEJOHN Born: July 10, 1957 Died: Feb. 5, 2016

James M. Littlejohn, 58, of Loves Park, died on February 5, 2016, in Rockford Memorial Hospital.

Born on July 10, 1957, in Aurora, son of James and Jeanne (Wheelock) Littlejohn. James retired from the United States Army after 20 years of dedicated service. United in marriage to Sarah Priddy on May 5, 2013. James was devoted to his family, and lived his entire life in service to others. He enjoyed playing the guitar, singing, and fishing. He was an avid Chicago Bears fan.

Late DeKalb County Board member O’Barski was a liberal Democrat, but was respected by members of both parties, Pietrowski said.

“He was somebody who was willing to tell it like it is, but was wiling to listen to you, too,” Pietrowski said. “He was unabashedly liberal, but he was also willing to find common ground.”

O’Barski met a Daily Chronicle reporter when he went to the polls to vote in a lightly attended local election in April.

“People don’t value government,” O’Barski said. “This idea we have gotten in this country that government is evil, it’s not. Government is us. And if you don’t participate, then you get what you deserve.”

Information about funeral arrangements and other details were not immediately available Tuesday.

The vacant District 10 County Board seat will be filled by an appointed member of the Democratic Party.

The appointee might have to run in the fall election, Pietrowski said, although he said he was not certain of the proper procedure.

On Tuesday, he was more focused on honoring his colleague, he said.

“We’ll share some memories of Frank at [today’s] Executive (Committee) meeting,” Pietrowski said, “and just kind of try to think of some ways to honor him and his service.”

DeKALB – Frank O’Barski, who was twice elected to the DeKalb County Board from District 10, has died. He was 67.

O’Barski, of DeKalb, had battled colon cancer for several years. According to a post written by his widow, Sue Willis, on a page on the website CaringBridge.org, he was first diagnosed with the disease in November 2012, about the time he was first elected to the County Board. Also, he is survived by a stepson Leo Reich.

The website said that O’Barski’s cancer had resurfaced in 2014, and again in 2015. He died about 5:30 p.m.

Tuesday at his home, according to the website.

Despite being dogged by illness throughout his time on the board, O’Barski never wanted to resign, said County Board Chairman Mark Pietrowsk Jr., D-District 3.

“There’s something that drove Frank, I think something that drove him his whole life, of wanting to help others, wanting to improve lives,” Pietrowski said. “And he felt like even if he had a limited amount of time, he wanted to spend it helping others, and that is just a testament to his personality and who he was as a person.”

O’Barski had lived on both coasts, including in New York City and San Francisco, and also worked as a journalist and a lawyer at different points in his life, Pietrowski said. He was also active in the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of DeKalb.

DeKalb County Administrator Gary Hanson notified other board members and county staff in an email Tuesday.

“Our challenge will be to honor Frank by being a responsive and caring government for the people we serve,” Hanson said. “Our thoughts are with Frank’s family and our comfort comes from knowing that Frank is no longer in pain.”

Kingston man faces child sex charges

KINGSTON – A 22-year-old man is facing charges of aggravated criminal sexual abuse after a police investigation found he was having a relationship with a girl between the ages of 13 and 17, police said Tuesday.

Joshua A. Heath, 22, of the 200 block of Ash Avenue, Kingston, was arrested

by Chicago police on a warrant for the charges, according to a news release from DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office. The warrant set bond for Heath at $75,000; he would have to post $7,500 bail to be released.

According to the release, police received a report from the Family Service Agency that Heath was in a dating relationship with the underage girl. The ensuing investigation determined the two were having a sexual relationship.

If convicted of aggravated criminal sex abuse, Heath could face three to seven years in prison.

After failed student attendance push, NIU to reward faithful fans

DeKALB – Facing backlash from students after a failed promotional bid that had promised to give away free tuition to a student to who attended all six Huskies home football games last season,

Northern Illinois University officials have changed course.

“While the overall goal of the Mission 6 promotion was not met, NIU Athletics feels that it is important to show our appreciation for the NIU students that showed their school spirit and supported our football program at every home game last year,” Morris White, NIU’s assistant athletic director for marketing and game experience, said in a statement.

“After consultation with our Director of Athletics, the decision was made to reward each individual student that attended all six home games during the 2015 NIU football season. According to official records, 86 students came to each of our six home games in 2015 and we will be contacting each of those individuals directly to show our appreciation.”

Some students said they were unaware of the Mission 6 promotion or the requirement that 6,000 students attend each game.

“We will continue to improve our communication with our students to ensure there is no confusion around our promotions moving forward,” White said. “At the end of the day, we are all on the same team and want to make every student’s experience, here at NIU, a memorable one.”

SYCAMORE – An autopsy was conducted Tuesday on a DeKalb County Jail inmate who died Monday after drinking jailhouse booze, but a cause of death has yet to be determined, DeKalb County Coroner Dennis Miller said.

Brandon A. Washington, 28, of Rochelle, died early Monday at Kishwaukee Hospital after falling ill inside his cell, police said. Samples needed for toxicology tests have been sent to an out-ofstate lab, where they will be analyzed and the results sent back, Miller said.

Police said Washington was unconscious when they found him inside his cell about 2 a.m. Monday. Deputies gave him CPR before he was taken to Kishwaukee Hospital, according to a news release from the DeKalb County Sher-

iff’s Office. Washington died at the hospital at 2:34 a.m., police said.

Washington was convicted in 2010 of attempted murder for shooting Jason Johnson of DeKalb in the face at point-blank range in May 2009. He had been sentenced to 38 years in prison, but was sent back to Brandon Washington the DeKalb County Jail by court order in November after filing a post-conviction petition. He was scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.

A preliminary investigation found Washington had been drinking homemade alcohol – commonly referred to as “hooch” – with cellmate Christopher Gerken, who faces murder charges in connection with a botched drug deal in October 2015, police said.

Bill would make posting fight videos illegal

SPRINGFIELD – The video posted on Facebook showed a 12-year-old on the ground while another boy tried to stomp him, with classmates standing by, circling the two and recording the fight on their phones.

Neither boy was seriously hurt, but Republican Rep. Terri Bryant of Murphysboro in southern Illinois was so disturbed by the spectators’ behavior that she’s proposed a bill making it a crime to record fights to share online.

“Instead of getting help, they opened their cellphones,” Bryant said.

“I just want to send a clear message that it is unacceptable to stage these fights or be a willing bystander.”

Bryant’s proposal, however, has prompted concerns about infringing on free speech rights and unnecessarily criminalizing young people. Similar concerns have hindered lawmakers around the country who have tried in recent years to crack down on cyberbullies who take to social media to

State urges college students to apply for financial aid

CHICAGO – Illinois officials say college students should continue to apply for financial aid, even though the state budget impasse has put grants for needy students on hold.

The Illinois Student Assistance Commission is encouraging students to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The form determines if a student is eligible for most financial aid programs, including Illinois’ Monetary Award Program, or MAP grants.

Funding for the grants has been frozen due to a stalemate between Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and majority Democrats, leaving schools and students wondering how they’ll pay their bills.

ISAC Director Eric Zarnikow said students shouldn’t assume the grants won’t be available for the 2016-17 school year.

He said it’s possible lawmakers will approve the funding, and students can’t get money if they don’t apply.

All 50 states have anti-bullying laws, but only half of those laws address cyberbullying, according to the Cyberbullying Research Center.

Utah passed a law in 2011 that would prevent students and faculty from using cellphones or other electronic devices to post words, videos or pictures to the Internet with the intent to harm or threaten another person.

Since then, several other states have passed cyberbullying laws that criminalize posting harmful or threatening content to social networking sites.

Amid budget woes, layoffs possible in Cook County

CHICAGO – Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle said layoffs of county workers and program cuts are possible because the state of Illinois doesn’t have a budget.

Preckwinkle said Monday that as of Jan. 31 the state owes Cook County about $66 million. Preckwinkle said the county “can’t continue to carry the state because we don’t have the cash reserves to do it.”

The Chicago Democrat said she’s particularly worried about $19 million that the county receives for child support enforcement and nearly $2 million it gets for an offender diversion program.

Preckwinkle said she’ll have to reconsider those programs if the state doesn’t pass a budget.

GOP Gov. Bruce Rauner and Democrats in the state Legislature have been at a state budget stalemate since last summer.

U of Illinois menorah damaged for a third time

CHAMPAIGN – A 9-foot-tall menorah at a University of Illinois Jewish student center has been damaged for a third time in less than a year, police said

Illinois passed a law criminalizing cyberbullying in 2014, but Bryant’s bill is unrelated.

“I would hate for children or teenagers to then have a misdemeanor on their record, and be introduced to the justice system well before they need to be,” said Sameer Hinduja, co-director of the Cyberbullying Research Center.

“Kids do it simply because they are kids.”

Lawmakers have had difficulty trying to criminalize some behavior that new technologies facilitate.

Republican Rep. John Carney of Kentucky proposed legislation this year that would have fined bystanders up to $100 for taking pictures of car accidents and posting them to social media. Carney said he wanted to protect families from seeing names or pictures of loved ones before they were notified by law enforcement.

Carney withdrew his proposal, however, because he said he knew it would not survive a First Amendment challenge.

Ed Yohnka, a spokesman for the

American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois, said Bryant’s bill will run into the same problems.

“We think this proposal is overly broad and unconstitutional,” he said.

The bill also could be difficult to prosecute because it would be hard to prove the intent of the person recording and posting a fight video online, said Matt Jones, associate director for administration at the Illinois State’s Attorneys Appellate Prosecutor office.

People could argue that by filming they are preserving evidence and publicizing wrongdoing.

Bryant said she’s not trying to infringe on anyone’s freedom of speech, but worries that recording fights to share online devalues people. She said one of her goals is to bring attention to how people are using social media to get a “few minutes of fame at someone else’s expense.”

Before smartphones and social media, Bryant said, “We would have never thought of getting a video camera instead of getting help.”

Tuesday, and the center’s rabbi believes school leaders need to take a stronger stand against the vandalism.

Two athletes have been suspended from competition, and campus police said they’ve issued a notice for one of them – a player on the softball team – to appear in court on a tentative charge of criminal damage to property. But no official charges have been filed over the incident, in which one arm of the aluminum menorah in front of the Chabad Jewish Center was broken early Sunday.

Surveillance video taken around 1 a.m. Sunday shows a man and woman approach the menorah, the woman unscrewing a light bulb on top of one arm and then breaking another arm as she tries to reach its bulb. She tries to repair it before the two walk away.

Interim athletic director Paul Kowalczyk said Tuesday that a softball player was indefinitely suspended from competition and a men’s gymnast from suspended from the team’s next two competitions, adding that both will write apologies to the center and will be required to perform unspecified community service.

“We are disappointed by the actions early Sunday morning of two student-athletes from softball and men’s

gymnastics at the Chabad Jewish Center on campus and apologize for this unacceptable behavior,” Kowalczyk said in an emailed statement.

Store owner charged with selling fake urine

CRESTWOOD – A suburban Chicago store owner has been charged with selling synthetic urine to help people pass drug and alcohol tests.

The Cook County Sheriff’s office says Taher Yousef of Crestwood allegedly sold a kit called “U Pass” to an undercover officer on Monday at his store, Tobacco Land Plus, in Crestwood. The kit included hand warmers that authorities say are used to heat the synthetic urine before submitting it for testing.

The 56-year-old Yousef was charged with a felony count of selling a synthetic substance with the intent of use it to defraud an alcohol or drug test.

The sheriff’s department says the only legitimate reason to possess synthetic urine is to calibrate drug testing equipment.

A phone call to the store seeking comment wasn’t answered. Yousef doesn’t have a listed number in Crestwood.

BAD AIBLING, Germany – Crews using helicopters and boats rescued dozens of people from the wreckage of two German commuter trains that crashed head-on Tuesday in an isolated part of Bavaria, killing at least 10 and leaving authorities trying to determine why multiple safety measures failed.

The trains crashed on a stretch of track running between a river and a forest about 40 miles southeast of Munich. Though the first rescue crews were on the scene in minutes, it took hours for all survivors to be airlifted and shuttled by boat across the river to waiting ambulances.

Nine people were reported dead immediately while a 10th died later in a hospital, police spokesman Stefan Sonntag said.

The two train engineers were thought to be among the dead and one person was still missing in the wreckage.

Trump, Sanders sweep to victory in New Hampshire The ASSOCIATED PRESS MANCHESTER, N.H. – Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Bernie Sanders rode a wave of voter frustration with American politics to commanding victories in Tuesday’s New Hampshire primaries, adding crucial credibility to their upstart candidacies.

Sanders swept majorities of men, women, independents and young people in his win over Hillary Clinton, but faces challenges in the more diverse states to come next on the primary calendar. Trump appealed to those seeking a political outsider, and he could benefit from a persistent lack of clarity among the more mainstream Republicans struggling to challenge him.

“We are going to do something so good and so fast and so strong and the world is going to respect us again, believe me,” Trump said at a victory rally.

At his own raucous rally, Sanders said his victory sent a message “that will echo from Wall Street to Washington, from Maine to California. And that is that the government of our great country belongs to all of the people and not just a handful of wealthy campaign contributors and their super PACs.” The enthusiasm behind Trump, a real estate mogul who has never held political office, and Sanders, who says he is a democratic socialist, underscores the public’s anger with the current political and economic system. Even if neither candidate ultimately becomes his party’s nominee, whoever wins that nomination

will have to reckon with the voter frustration they’ve tapped into.

New Hampshire did little to clarify the crowded contest among more mainstream GOP candidates fighting to emerge as a challenger to Trump and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, who won the Iowa caucus. Ohio Gov. John Kasich claimed second place after devoting almost all of his campaign resources to New Hampshire, while Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and former Florida Gov. NIU should award free tuition The Northern Illinois University Athletics Department should just give free tuition to one of the 86 students who attended all six home football games this season.

That would be a good way to regain students’ trust after the fine-print fiasco surrounding their “Mission 6” promotion from this football season, which has become a public relations liability.

When it was announced before the start of the football season, the promotion generated a lot of free press for NIU. The premise was simple: The athletic department would award a semester of free tuition to a student who attended all six games and stayed the entire time. The program was said to have a “goal” of getting 6,000 students to attend all six home games.

In reality, that “goal” was a requirement.

Without 6,000 students attending all six games, no one would get anything. This point was made far down in one athletic department news release about the promotion, but was never highlighted as we would expect an important contest rule would be. Only last week, months after the end of football season and after the Daily Chronicle filed a Freedom of Information Act request, was that point clarified.

Some students who had attended all six games told the Northern Star, NIU’s student newspaper, that they thought they were in the running for free tuition. Others said they’d never heard of the program, which makes us wonder whether it was effectively marketed at all.

According to the contest rules, no one had been eligible for free tuition since Sept. 5, when only 2,965 students attended the Huskies’ season-opening win against UNLV. As it turned out, that was the high-water mark for the year – which makes us wonder whether 6,000 students a game was an attainable goal.

We understand the challenges the athletic department has historically faced in boosting attendance numbers for Huskies athletics, and the Mission 6 program seemed like an innovative way to improve student attendance numbers.

However, the way this program was run risks alienating loyal fans who supported the Huskies all season long, from the sunny Saturday against UNLV to the fewer than 700 students who showed up on a damp, cold Tuesday night game against Ohio at the start of NIU’s Thanksgiving break.

Why do that? Give one of the faithful 86 students who followed the rules the free tuition.

It’ll make it up to the students, and the awareness it generates will make others more likely to attend the games next year.

They’ll probably even have some parental encouragement.

Losing ‘patience’ on North Korea Assessing the behavior of North Korean ruler Kim Jong Un is necessarily a matter of guesswork. In light of North Korea’s launch Sunday of another long-range rocket, however, our favorite theory is a simple one: Kim is responding rationally, even shrewdly, to the outside world.

The 30-something dictator no doubt noticed that after the regime’s latest nuclear test, on Jan. 6, there was no response other than rhetoric from the U.N. Security Council, China and the United States. Moreover, he surely observed that his provocation served to widen a rift between Washington and Beijing over how to handle him. So why not double down?

The three-stage rocket launched Sunday, which supposedly put a satellite into Earth’s orbit, could also serve as an intercontinental missile. If North Korea has succeeded, as it claims it has, in miniaturizing a nuclear warhead, Kim could target Hawaii and Alaska, or perhaps even the western U.S. mainland. The threat is not imminent – and yet it is likely to become so if the United States does not devise a more effective strategy for containing and deterring the

Kim regime.

President Barack Obama’s policy since 2009, “strategic patience,” has failed. The policy has mostly consisted of ignoring North Korea while mildly cajoling China to pressure the regime. As the supplier of most of the isolated country’s energy and food, Beijing has enormous leverage. But Chinese President Xi Jinping appears even more committed than his predecessors to the doctrine that it is preferable to tolerate the Kim regime – and its nuclear proliferation – than do anything that might destabilize it.

Since the nuclear test, China has been saying that it will support another U.N. resolution on North Korea, but it is balking at significant new sanctions. Instead it calls for “dialogue,” by which it means negotiations between North Korea and the United States. This sounds reasonable; the problem is that talks on curbing North Korea’s nuclear program and missiles have failed repeatedly, and Kim is now insisting that the regime be accepted as a nuclear power.

What is needed is a return to the only non-military strategy that brought results: sanctions that strike at the regime’s inner

circle. Kim and his cronies are still managing to import luxury goods from China, in spite of a U.N. ban; they still use Chinese banks to do business with the rest of the world.

Those links could be curtailed if China, like Iran before it, were designated as a money launderer and U.S. sanctions were slapped on Chinese banks and other businesses that supply weapons and luxury goods.

Pending U.S. sanctions legislation, already passed by the House and scheduled for a Senate floor vote this week, would mandate these steps, while providing the administration with some flexibility. It should pass, and Obama should sign it. The administration and South Korea have taken one positive step, by announcing formal consultations on deploying an advanced missile defense system in South Korea as quickly as possible. That sensible step had been on hold because of China’s objections.

Both China and North Korea must see that they will pay a mounting price for what, to the United States, should be Kim’s intolerable steps toward a nuclear arsenal. “Strategic patience” is no longer a viable option.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

VIEWS Leonard Pitts shown us in recent years, there can be a vast gulf between what a police officer says and what the truth actually is. There is no video here, but there is an autopsy report which indicates that of the six shots that struck LeGrier, one was in his back and another in his behind, which would seem to indicate that at some point during the barrage at least, he was not facing Rialmo. Not incidentally, one of Rialmo’s shots passed through LeGrier and fatally struck Jones, who was behind him.

It is a body of evidence that is, at best, open to interpretation. But about Rialmo’s decision to sue LeGrier’s estate, it’s a lot easier to reach a hard conclusion: Rialmo should be ashamed of himself.

The suit is ostensibly a counterclaim to the wrongful death suits filed by the Jones and LeGrier families against the city. Rialmo is seeking up to $10

million for his “pain and suffering ...”.

But this is less a lawsuit than it is an act of gall, a product of the kind of petulance, pettiness and spite we have seen too often in recent years from too many police officers.

Don’t get me wrong. I believe most of the people who get into that profession do so for honorable reasons. In fact, I think that in the field of public service, cops are among the greatest -- and last -- true believers.

But I also believe that when a police officer meets legitimate inquiries about use of force by engaging in a work slowdown as has happened in New York and Baltimore, or by turning his back on the mayor at a police funeral as happened in New York, or by acting with blatant thuggishness toward protesters as happened in Ferguson, Missouri, or by suing the family of the teenager he killed, as is happening now in Chicago, what is expressed is not public service, but public contempt.

Rialmo, after all, must know that, even in the very unlikely event he should prevail, he will not collect $10 million from the estate of a dead college

sophomore. So obviously, he is doing this not as a means of enrichment, nor as a salve for his “pain and suffering,” but rather, as a brushback pitch, a middle digit salute, and a message.

How dare we question him? How dare we hold him to account?

As noted above, it’s a message that has grown drearily familiar. Perhaps it is time for a message in response: The police cannot be above the law they enforce. The police must be answerable to the people they serve. I get that that’s unpleasant, but it’s also critical. Effective policing requires that an officer project authority and trustworthiness. Every lie and compromise of justice undermines that. And every act of petulant gall just makes other officers’ work that much more difficult.

So Rialmo has done his profession no favors here. When you project contempt toward the public, what do you expect the public to give you in return?

Why people confess to crimes they didn’t commit FAYE FLAM

The Washington Post An economics professor made the audacious suggestion a few years ago that the medieval practice of trial by ordeal “worked” because innocent people were more likely than guilty ones to pick up pieces of hot iron or plunge their bare hands into boiling oil.

The practice depended on suspects having unwavering faith that God would save the truly innocent from third-degree burns. And the priests in charge could temper the heat, just in case God wasn’t paying attention.

Likewise, less brutal means of psychological manipulation in U.S. criminal investigations may “work” to elicit confessions, but there’s a growing scientific case that currently acceptable tactics aren’t conducive to discovering the truth.

The recent mass distribution of videotaped interrogations, such as the ones featured in the Netflix documentary series “Making a Murderer,” reveal that confessions aren’t always spontaneous

acts of contrition, motivated by the need for a clear conscience. The interrogation process can still be something of an ordeal, with confessions coaxed by combinations of psychological pressure, deception and sheer exhaustion.

The exhaustion factor interested psychologist Elizabeth Loftus, a memory expert known for demonstrating the unreliability of eyewitness testimony.

She wondered whether it mattered that many interrogations are held between midnight and 8 a.m., or that in some cases, the process can drag on for hours.

Teaming up with researchers at the Michigan State University sleep laboratory, she and colleagues set up an experiment to see if sleep deprivation might make subjects more prone to making false confessions. Their results were published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The study used 88 student volunteers who were asked to complete questionnaires and take tests on a computer, and were explicitly warned that pressing the escape key would destroy the researchers’ valuable data. Told the

study had something to do with sleep deprivation and memory, they were asked to report back a week later to spend the night in the lab.

Half of them were allowed to sleep and the other, asked to stay up all night.

Those in the all-nighter group were monitored and could do homework, watch TV, or play games with lab personnel. The next morning, all subjects were told someone had observed them press the escape key the week before.

Of the sleep-deprived, a full half -- 22 -- confessed on a first round of questioning, and eight more confessed on the second. Fewer of the sleepers did so: just eight on the first round and nine on the second.

Unfortunately, the researchers didn’t build in a mechanism to reveal how many people, if any, really did press the escape key. They said it’s unlikely anyone would press it by accident given its far corner location. But they had to rely on faith and the assumption that few subjects would press the forbidden key on purpose.

If the study indeed measured false

confessions, it may help explain why the phenomenon is so common. False confessions are thought to account for 15 percent to 25 percent of wrongful convictions. So damning is a confession that in some cases, even DNA isn’t enough to reverse a conviction.

Imagine you’re a suspect and you’re told there’s evidence against you, said law professor Adam Benforado, author of the book Unfair: The New Science of Criminal Injustice. If you confess, you’ll get a two-year sentence, but if you fight it, you might end up with 25. When faced with this choice in his class, he said, many of his law students would confess. When presented that way, falsely confessing isn’t an irrational choice. Some of us would do it on a full night’s sleep.

First he killed him. Now he’s suing him.

I have no idea whether Robert Rialmo, the Chicago police officer who shot 19-year-old Northern Illinois University student Quintonio LeGrier to death the day after Christmas, was justified in doing so. Certainly, the sequence of events Rialmo describes seems to suggest he was within bounds when he opened fire.

According to Rialmo, Bettie Jones, a 55-year-old grandmother, had just let him into the apartment building where he had been called to quell a domestic disturbance when LeGrier, a college sophomore with a history of emotional problems, charged down the stairs wielding a baseball bat. As Rialmo tells it, LeGrier ignored repeated orders to drop the bat and twice swung at the officer’s head, missing him by just inches.

That, Rialmo says, is when he opened fire.

If that is, indeed, how it happened, then it would seem Rialmo had no choice.

Cogs’ long layoff ends with big win

ecarifio@shawmedia.com GENOA – Despite not playing in nearly two weeks, the Genoa-Kingston boys basketball team came out firing in a 60-42 win against Richmond-Burton on Tuesday.

The Cogs (13-8, 7-2 Big Northern Conference East) never trailed, scoring the first seven points and turning a 10-point second-quarter lead into a 31-11 advantage in less than 2 minutes.

“We’re not pleased with the mistakes we were making as far as getting things covered in the first half,” Genoa-Kingston coach Corey Jenkins said. “I thought we had some breakdowns, and that’s due to lack of communication, and that’s from having 11 or 12 days off. And it showed we haven’t played in a while and the boys responded.”

The Rockets (9-15, 3-6 BNC East) went into halftime trailing by 17. Early in the third, Genoa-Kingston’s Tommy Lucca, who had only five points in the first half, picked up his third foul and sat out the remainder of the quarter.

G-K led by 18 when the quarter was over.

“I think we maxed out what we were capable of at that point,” Richmond-Burton coach Brandon Creason said. “I don’t know that we were – I mean we got some shots up, and we did a good job defensively that quarter. I think we did what we could do.”

Lucca didn’t score in the second

half. Brandon Foley picked up a big chunk of the scoring for the Cogs, finishing with 12 points on four 3-pointers.

“It’s nice to see Brandon step in and hit a couple shots,” Jenkins said.

“It seems like its been a couple weeks since his shot dropped.”

Five different players scored in the third quarter for the Cogs in Lucca’s absence.

“We don’t press the panic button on that,” Jenkins said. “We have plenty of guys who are capable of stepping in and handling the ball. They do it collectively with Bailey (Foley), Zach (Miller), Brandon (Foley) and Justin (McNeal). They are all guys who can handle the ball for us. We just have to believe we can do it, and that’s been our biggest problem in years past. Now that they’re varsity-level players, they see they can do it. We know we can play without him, but it’s a whole lot easier when he’s on the floor and we’re playing with him.”

Brady Huffman added 11 points for the Cogs, while Richmond-Burton’s Jakob Kaufman led all scorers with 16.

With the playoffs only a couple of weeks away, Jenkins said he was concerned with the rhythm of the team, but was glad to see it come off the layoff with a strong win.

“That was a concern for me because we had this stretch and postseason is right around the corner,” Jenkins said.

“The boys responded nicely, so pat on the back for them.”

Premium seating options boost revenue despite lower attendance

Senior Associate Director of Athletics for Sport Administration at NIU tendance this past season, the Huskies bucked the trend of continuing to have a decline in crowds, but only gained about 400 more fans a game. In the six home games in 2015, the Huskies had an average attendance of 13,942 a game.

With the additional game, the revenue went up to $1,372,642 ($228,773.67 per game) on the season.

Vickers said the exclusivity of premium seating has been part of the reason for the popularity of the areas.

“I think it always plays a role when it comes to premium areas. I really do,” Vickers said. “It’s the exclusivity to say I’m going to the club.”

Vickers said there’s strong popularity in the Sky Club and Sky Box, which is located below the press box and has

been wait-listed. The Sky Box features 114 seats inside for $1,250 a season, and the Sky Club has 36 seats just outside the Sky Box for $900 a season.

Vickers said the Sky Box has a waiting list of between 25 and 50 people.

“I don’t see frustration,” Vickers said of those on the waiting list, which is determined by annual donation rate and “priority points,” which is how much the person has given in lifetime.

“It tells me the reason why we built more premium areas ... because people want to have access to more premium areas where they can entertain their friends or themselves.”

While the Huskies have ramped up their efforts into premium seating in the past few seasons, Vickers has said

Although Vickers said there was no immediate plans for new premium seating next season, he added there are different promotional deals – including being able to combine the End Zone Club and Coaches Club into one pass at a discounted rate.

With 2015 being the first year of the End Zone Club – which are the heated tents on the south side of Huskie Stadium that cost $125 a game and $600 for the season – Vickers said it didn’t sell out, with 46 total passes being sold and plenty of promotional tickets being given out, but was optimistic for the future of the place.

“It met expectations to people getting interest,” Vickers said. “As far as dollars accrued, no, we’re not satisfied.

There’s still work to be done.”

DeKALB – For the second straight season, the Northern Illinois football team struggled to keep attendance up since the departure of beloved star quarterback Jordan Lynch.

However, for the second successive season, NIU’s per-game revenue for football games increased.

It’s been because of the addition of several premium seating options at Huskie Stadium, most of which have been added since Sean Frazier took over as athletic director in 2013.

According to Jay Vickers, senior associate director of athletics for sport administration at NIU, the premium seating has been invaluable to keep revenue going while the Huskies are one of several college football teams around the country struggling with attendance.

“It all helps across the board,” Vickers said. “We have some work to do.

We’re never satisfied with where we’re at. I don’t think you get too much diminishing returns when you have the demand. That’s why we try to be very strategic and analytic about how much you build out. We’re nowhere near being near premium area fatigue.”

According to Vickers, NIU raised more than $530,000 in revenue from the premium seating areas, which include the Sky Club, the Sky Box below the press box, the Terrace Club outside of the Yordon Center, the End Zone Club on the south side of Brigham Field, the Coaches Club below the west grandstands and the chair-back and benchback seats on the west side of Huskie Stadium.

Vickers has said there has been a 138 percent increase in donations since 2013 with the premium seating.

The 2013 season – the final year of Heisman Trophy finalist Lynch – had an average attendance of 20,669 for five games, giving a total revenue of $948,370 ($189,674 per game).

A year later, the Huskies attendance plummeted to 13,563 a game in five contests, but had a total revenue of $1,124,114 ($224,822.80 per game).

The Sycamore girls basketball team put in another strong defensive effort and won, 45-26, Tuesday night at Sterling.

Madison McGhee scored a teamhigh 13 points, Lauren Goff added nine and Kate Majerus had eight for the Spartans.

NIU Hall of Famer was courageous, beloved

One of the loudest ovations from the audience at the 2015 Northern Illinois University Athletics Hall of Fame induction ceremony in October at the Holmes Student Center belonged to Hubie Dunn.

Introduced in an elite group of 30-plus previous inductees before 400-plus community members, alums and fans, the unassuming Dunn might have been the most popular nonagenarian in DeKalb. Guess the standing ovation that evening gave it away.

Why not? If they gave congeniality awards to hall of famers, Hubie would rule with perfect 10s.

Friends, neighbors and colleagues probably knew him as a national pioneer gymnast and coach, a distinguished, award-winning educator, a “gentleman of the highest caliber,” and a devoted family man. Fewer realized that in his college days, Dunn was the daring young man on the dangerous flying rings and, during World War II, a U.S. Naval officer in the D-Day invasion on the destroyer USS Shubrick.

Mild-mannered Hubie Dunn, you say? Yes. One would never know by his even-keel demeanor.

One of Tom Brokaw’s celebrated “America’s greatest generation,” Dunn, 94, died Jan. 31 at Kishwaukee Hospital and will be buried with military honors at Fairview Park Cemetery.

“Hubie was a man of kind and gentle heart,” said former Regal Drive neighbor Gary Glenn, a well-respected and now-retired NIU political science professor from 1966 to 2007. “[He] suffered from much personal loss in his life, but never said much about it to anyone.”

Preceding Dunn in death were his two sons (Daniel and David), his wife, Mary, 18 years ago, and nine siblings.

“I knew him for 20 years before I realized Hubie was at Normandy in World War II,” Glenn added. “On his wedding anniversary every year, he would visit Mary at the cemetery with 49 red roses – one for every year of their marriage. Hubie was a man of

When the USS Shubrick moved to the Pacific Theatre in February 1945, Dunn transferred duty stations.

Three months later, his old ship was attacked by two kamikaze aircraft and nearly destroyed. Thirty-five U.S. sailors were killed and 25 were wounded.

“For years, Hubie felt guilty over the loss of his old shipmates,” Glenn said.

Years later in a different time, different war (Vietnam) and amidst national campus unrest, Dunn made the courageous – albeit unpopular one on the political left – stand for Hubie Dunn NIU’s newly established ROTC program in the spring of 1970.

With my low draft lottery number and longer hair, I was there in jampacked Chick Evans Field House with 6,000 other young people at that heated forum. Dunn got booed. Although I understood the ROTC argument on both sides, it was incredulous that a decorated WWII veteran had no First Amendment rights, no voice. I’ll never forget that.

“Hubie,” Glenn added, “was also a man of courage and conviction.”

In gymnastics, Dunn also was a man of considerable influence – being enshrined into five halls of fame – the Citizens Savings Helms Foundation Gymnastics (1973), the U.S.A. Gymnastics (1996), NIU’s (1997), the state of Washington Gymnastics (2004) and the Washington State University version (2006). He was the recipient of the highest accolade from the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches – the “Honor Coach” (1981), plus the “Outstanding Service Award” recipient (1968 and 1981). Dunn also served as the NACGC president (196768).

“What people do not know is what Hubie accomplished, and how he accomplished it, back in the day,” said Chuck Ehrlich, the former NIU men’s gymnastics coach from 1973 to 1990 and a 2002 inductee into the NIU Athletics Hall of Fame. “As a college athlete at Southern Illinois, he was doing floor ex(ercise) on a hardwood floor with no mats. That’s hard on the body. On the flying rings, Hubie had to dismount on a little, tiny horsehair mat.”

During Dunn’s SIU tenure (193943), most gymnastics competition was AAU-based or in open meets unlike the dual or triangular meets of today.

Many times, Dunn, the team captain, hitchhiked to meets – going from Carbondale to Chicago on two-lane country roads. There were no cushy team buses with bathrooms and flatscreen TVs. Yet, as a senior, Dunn captured six individual championships on the circuit – tumbling and the long horse (vault) at the Ozark Association AAU meet in St. Louis, long horse at the Central Association AAU in Chicago, parallel bars and tumbling at the Midwest Invitational in Bloomington, Indiana, and all-around at the Midwest Gymnastics Society Championships in Minneapolis. In 1942 and ’43, Dunn ranked among the top college gymnasts in the country, according to his U.S. Gymnastics bio.

In good conscience, I have to ask: Why isn’t Dunn in the SIU Athletics Hall of Fame? But I digress.

Known as the “father of Northwest gymnastics,” Dunn introduced the sport to that region at the prep and college levels, plus established the program at Washington State (1947).

At WSU, his teams went 70-20-3 in duals, won three Pacific Northwest team titles and three regional crowns, plus produced 48 individual champions in 14 years (1947-55, 1956-62) before arriving at NIU. In 10 Huskies campaigns, Dunn build the foundation for Ehrlich’s national powerhouse years later with seven winning dual-meet seasons and

a 62-49-1 won-lost-tied mark in duals from 1962 to ’72. He tutored NIU’s first Interstate Intercollegiate Athletic Conference individual champ (Tom Hussein on the still rings in 1964), posted the program’s initial triumph over the Big Ten Conference (Ohio State in 1965-66), and recruited the sport’s first Division I All-America (Pete Botthof on the pommel horse).

“Hubie never said much, but in those early years, Evans Field House had a dirt floor then and the gymnasts practiced on the south end of the building, not exactly an ideal setup, but he made it work,” Ehrlich said.

During the Ehrlich era, Dunn served as meet manager for all home competition – including the NCAA Eastern Independent Qualifications (1977), the NIU-Indiana State dual (1978-79) featuring Olympian Kurt Thomas and 6,000 fans, and the NIU vs. U.S.S.R. exhibition (1982). Forever a gymnastics advocate, Dunn beamed with pride at such events.

“Hubie was something else,” Ehrlich recalled. “He sure helped me.

“You couldn’t find a better person on many levels. Maybe the skill level was different and the equipment newer, but his tremendous knowledge of kinesiology and bio-mechanics allowed him to explain techniques to our kids.”

Born and raised in downstate Pinckneyville, Dunn and his interest in gymnastics went against the grain in that southern basketball hotbed, which – in a way – might explain his close four-decade friendship with NIU Hall of Fame basketball boss John McDougal.

“Hubie was a man of character, intelligence and integrity,” said McDougal, 90, upon hearing the news. “I loved him like a brother.”

Ice time limited for Darling

mlazerus@suntimes.com CHICAGO – Scott Darling hasn’t started a game since a 4-0 loss Jan. 22 at Florida, his lone appearance being a relief effort of Corey Crawford four nights later.

And based on coach Joel Quenneville’s usual schedule of starting Darling only when the Blackhawks play back-to-back games, the backup goalie won’t see the ice again until early March, and then only one more time after that before the playoffs.

Even with a workhorse such as Crawford, that’s not going to work. So Quenneville will pick his spots to try to get Darling in every now and then over the final two months of the season.

“There’ll be times when (he plays and) it’s not a back-to-back,” Quenneville said. “We’re going to have to get him in there at some point. We’ll see how things are going, how things are sorting out in the playoff race. Sometimes, it could be the opponent who dictates that. But I would expect him getting more than just back-toback starts.”

“It’s the schedule; we’re busy with travel, in numerous places,” Quenneville said with a shrug.

“You look around the league, you see a lot of guys missing games due to illness. Our trainers and our medical team are doing a tremendous job of preventing it. It’s something to keep an eye on.”

Great outdoors: The Hawks will face the Minnesota Wild on Feb. 21 at TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, and are being strongly considered for next year’s Winter Classic, likely against the St. Louis Blues at Busch Stadium. It would be their fifth outdoor game. The outdoor games bring some headaches – and the Winter Classic would mean another month with an embedded camera crew from Epix – but Quenneville welcomed the possibility.

“It’s no trouble at all, we love it,” he said. “It’s a great opportunity and players love it. Special setting for families, as well. It’s always a privilege to be involved with those games.”

SALT LAKE CITY – A medical examiner has determined NFL quarterback Jay Cutler’s brother-in-law’s death was accidental, saying Michael Cavallari died of hypothermia after he crashed his car during a frigid temperatures while passing through a rocky and rural part of southern Utah.

Grand County Sheriff officials announced the findings Tuesday in a news release. The 30-year-old Michael Cavallari is the brother of reality TV personality Kristin Cavallari.

China painting was an important artistic talent in past centuries.

Although single color transfer designs were developed and used by the late 1700s, they lacked the color and graceful lines that were possible if the ceramic was decorated by hand. Today, the work of exceptional painters brings much higher prices than other pieces by the same factory. Shirayamadani (1865-1948) was a Japanese artist at Rookwood Pottery in Cincinnati.

Rudolph T. Lux (1815-1868) decorated white porcelain with portraits ordered by important politicians and businessmen in New Orleans, and William Powell (working 1900 to 1950) was famous for painting English birds on porcelains made

by Royal Worcester. In the first part of the 1900s, painting ceramics was a hobby and sometimes a job of talented housewives. There were magazines like Keramic Studio, published by Adelaide Alsop Robineau that featured pictures and instructions and even furnished patterns. Large makers of dinnerware and decorative porcelains often had a team of young women who put patterns on plates or sometimes, painted original landscapes or floral designs. A Royal Worcester vase from the early 1900s was decorated with a picture of wetlands and two egrets in soft colors and gilded trim. It is marked with the green “Royal Worcester England” mark and the initials “WHB.” It also is signed “W. Powell” by the

painter. The 12 1/2-inch-tall vase sold in 2015 for $1,180. *** Q: I have a small wash table with a metal tag on it that reads “The Ross Table Wash-Stand, Patented, Manufactured by Forest City Furniture Co., Rockford, Ill.” It has a hinged lid with a mirror on the inside of the lid and compartments to hold things. There is a shelf below. When was this made and what it might be worth?

A: Forest City Furniture Co. was in business in Rockford from 1869 to 1919. L.P. Ross was granted a patent for a “combined wash stand and table” in 1886. The compartments in the washstand are meant to hold the bowl and pitcher, and there is a removable compartment for waste water. The shelf holds soap and towels. Your washstand is worth about $400. *** Q: Are printed paper bags from closed stores really collectible, and are they popular? I saw a D. H. Holmes bag on eBay for $40.

A: Collectors like shopping bags with interesting graphics or from particular stores. Some collectors hang them on the wall like paintings. Paper shopping bags with handles were first made in 1912.

Some shopping bags are considered works of art. Over 100 bags were exhibited at the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt Museum in New York City in 1978. The museum now owns over 1,000 bags.

A: National Cash Register was founded in Dayton, Ohio, in 1884.

Brass cash registers were made from the 1890s to about 1918. Flat metal cases stamped and painted to look like wood were made beginning about 1918. The larger number on your cash register is the serial number. It indicates the cash register was made in early 1926, so it’s not actually wood but metal painted to look like wood.

Try some heat with your sweet

M

exican hot chocolate is a beloved beverage made from chocolate combined with cinnamon and another spice or two to bring up the heat. The combination of spicy and chocolate just plain works, and I wanted to see how it would translate into another beloved treat, the good old American brownie.

Again, it just plain worked.

These brownies are on the fudgier side, which I happen to love.

The kick from the spices – cayenne, cinnamon and ancho chili powder – is at first subtle, then more pronounced, then fades. All of which means, of course, you must go back and have another bite.

And another.

It is no accident that this recipe makes a large pan. Valentine’s Day may be meant for couples, but these brownies are meant for sharing.

Mexican Chocolate Chip Brownies Start to finish: 45 minutes Servings: 24

3 cups (18 ounces) semisweet chocolate chips, divided 3/4 cup (1½ sticks) unsalted butter 1¾ cups sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 4 large eggs 1½ cups all-purpose flour

Mexican Chocolate Chip Brownies

1/3 cup cocoa powder 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1/4 teaspoon ancho chili powder Heat the oven to 350 degrees F. Coat a 9-by-13-inch metal baking pan with cooking spray.

In a medium saucepan over medium-low, melt 2 cups of the chocolate chips with the

butter, stirring frequently. As soon as the mixture is smooth remove it from the heat.

Stir in the sugar and vanilla, then beat in the eggs one at a time.

While the chocolate is melting, in a medium bowl mix together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, cayenne and ancho chili powder.

After beating the eggs into the chocolate mixture, stir in the flour mixture until well blended. Stir in the remaining chocolate chips. Pour the batter into the prepared pan

and smooth the top. Bake for about 30 minutes, or until a wooden toothpick or skewer inserted at the center comes out clean. Cool completely in the pan on a wire rack. Cut into 24 squares.

Nutrition information per serving: 230 calories; 120 calories from fat (52 percent of total calories); 13 g fat (8 g saturated; 0 g trans fats); 50 mg cholesterol; 115 mg sodium; 31 g carbohydrate; 2 g fiber; 22 g sugar; 3 g protein.

Valentine’s Day can throw the best of us into a wild panic. How to show the one you love the way you feel without succumbing to cliches?

Best to avoid fancy dinners and a bunch of roses, in my opinion. Always lovely, but never original. What everyone wants is to feel like they’re being thought about or cared for. For me, making something for someone does exactly that because it’s a simple act of love. It need not be a pudding flambé or an Eiffel Tower-high croquembouche, just something special.

These chai spiced chocolate truffles are perfect. They are dark and dense orbs, made using good quality 70 percent dark chocolate infused with cream and the gorgeous sweet spices ordinarily used in chai, including ginger, cinnamon, cardamom and cloves. They can be made in advance, leaving you more time to spend with your loved one.

Chai Spice Chocolate Truffles

Start to finish: 2 hours 25 minutes (25 minutes active) Makes 48 truffles 8 ounces dark chocolate, roughly chopped 1 cup heavy cream

2 tablespoons unsalted butter 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon ground dry ginger 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves 1 teaspoon sugar 1/2 cup cocoa powder Set the chocolate in a medium bowl. Set aside.

In a medium saucepan over medium, combine the cream and butter. Heat until the butter melts and the cream starts to bubble. Be careful not to burn the cream. Pour the hot milk mixture over the chocolate, whisking to melt the chocolate until you have a smooth mixture. Add the cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, cloves and sugar. Mix well, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or until firm. To make the truffles, place the cocoa powder in a bowl to one side. Using a melon baller or small cookie scoop dipped in hot water, scoop out a little of the firm chocolate mixture and shape into a ball. To coat, roll around in the bowl of cocoa powder until well covered. Store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

Start to finish: 20 minutes Makes about 1 cup 3 tablespoons finely grated fresh horseradish 3 tablespoons white vinegar Pinch kosher salt 1/3 cup ketchup 1/3 cup Heinz Chili Sauce (or similar brand) 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce Hot sauce, to taste (optional) In a small bowl, let the grated horseradish stand for 5 minutes. Stir in the vinegar and the salt, then add the ketchup, chili sauce, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce and hot sauce, to taste. Stir well.

Start to finish: 40 minutes (10 minutes active) Makes about 1/2 cup

2 tablespoons minced shallots 1 tablespoon coarsely cracked black pepper 1/2 cup red wine vinegar, white wine vinegar, Champagne vinegar or cider vinegar Hefty pinch kosher salt Hefty pinch sugar In a small bowl, combine all ingredients and stir well. Cover and chill for 30 minutes before using.

Ginger Wasabi Sauce Start to finish: 20 minutes Makes about 1/2 cup

2 teaspoons wasabi powder 2 teaspoons warm water 1/2 cup seasoned rice vinegar 2 tablespoons minced shallots 2 teaspoons finely grated fresh ginger Kosher salt In a small bowl, combine the wasabi and water. Mix well, then let stand for 5 minutes. Add a few tablespoons of the vinegar and whisk until the wasabi paste is thinned and smooth. Add the remaining vinegar, the shallots, ginger and a pinch of salt. Serve right away.

A look back at when Otto’s rocked

browland@daily-chronicle.com Not that long ago, Otto’s Niteclub near the intersection of First Street and Lincoln Highway was a powerhouse of the local music scene.

People packed into sold-out shows at the downtown DeKalb business to see performances by acts such as Wilco, Snoop Dogg, George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic, and Ted Nugent, among many others. It was a proving ground for local musicians and attracted staples from the jam band scene such as Umphrey’s McGee, Drive-by Truckers, Robert Randolph and the Family Band, and Dark Star Orchestra. It also provided something much rarer – a bridge between Northern Illinois University and downtown DeKalb.

For more than three decades, Otto’s drew NIU students and townies alike with music and drinks. It closed in January 2014 after a burst pipe left the building at the corner of First Street and Lincoln Highway uninhabitable. It has been shuttered ever since and the future of the building remains in question.

Over the years, Otto’s had its share of ups and downs.

It opened in 1984 (or possibly 1985) and for many years was owned by the Daniels family. Searching through the Daily Chronicle archives, I wasn’t able to find the exact date it opened. I did find an item in the DeKalb police blotter from April 1987 that recounted a suspect’s attempt to steal a keg of beer from Otto’s about 6 a.m. while employee Bob Daniels was working in the building’s basement office.

The newspaper reported that after hearing a noise on the stairway, Daniels investigated and eventually “found a keg of beer in the backseat of a car parked across the street. The car and its contents were towed to the city garage.”

In 1993, Daniels, who by then was owner of the tavern, lost his state liquor license after a tax issue with the state. Otto’s remained closed until mid-June, when Daniels made arrangements to pay $65,000 in pastdue taxes plus penalties and interest, the Daily Chronicle reported.

More trouble was ahead.

Next week: A look back at now-defunct Otto’s Nightclub in DeKalb. of the city’s liquor commissioner in March 1994 to answer charges of allowing minors inside. DeKalb Mayor and Liquor Commissioner Greg Sparrow ordered Otto’s to be closed for six days after the March hearing, which focused on the death of 20-year-old Sycamore resident Darrell Carney.

Carney died in the early morning hours of Oct. 9, 1993, after being struck by a train. An investigation later revealed he had a blood-alcohol content of 0.183 percent, the legal limit for driving at the time was 0.10.

Police said the 20-year-old had been served alcohol at Otto’s and Lord Stanley’s. The hearing concerned whether Carney’s ID was checked before he entered the bar. DeKalb County Coroner Dennis Miller testified at the hearing that Carney had no identification on him when he died.

John Daniels was owner of Otto’s when a group of area musicians and a technical crew re-created Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of Moon” and Jimi Hendrix’s “Axis: Bold as Love” live on stage in 1998. The performance was detailed in a long review with several photos in the Daily Chronicle.

Duff Rice and Stan Doty took over Otto’s in early 2001. They did some renovations and set out to attract “big name” bands to the venue. John Daniels stayed on as a consultant. By early 2012 they had forged a temporary deal with the city of DeKalb that allowed 19-year-olds and 20-year-olds to attend shows on the first floor.

Alcohol sales were restricted to the lower floor, according to reports at the time.

“After about six or seven songs, Snoop suddenly stopped, took off his glasses and started wiping his face.

Someone had apparently thrown something at the stage that hit Snoop in the eye. The show was halted and Snoop was down, but not beaten.

After offering a thousand dollars to anyone who was within reach of the offender to “kick his [expletive],” Snoop said the show would go on,”

Rush wrote.

Snoop closed out his performance with “Who am I, What’s my Name” shortly before midnight.

In 2004, Otto’s celebrated its 20th anniversary. Doty was listed as the sole owner in that report, which noted performances by Wilco and Ted Nugent.

When Otto’s closed in 2014, owner Pat Looney told the Daily Chronicle that maintenance issues had plagued the building for years.

City officials have said they would like to see the property become an anchor of the downtown.

Dear Abby: My son, “Chad,” is being married in June to “Jenny,” a girl his sister, “Madison,” introduced him to. Madison feels she should be a bridesmaid in their wedding because she introduced them. Madison had sex with Jenny’s boyfriend “Axel” before she met Chad, got pregnant and had Axel’s baby.

Parents should set good example for children who are overweight Dear Dr. K: My 12-year-old is overweight.

How can I help him achieve a healthy weight without making him feel deprived?

Dear Reader: Being overweight makes it hard for a child to keep up with friends on the playground. And the teasing can be merciless. What’s more, kids who are overweight are at greater risk for lots of health problems as teens and later in life.

Children who are overweight or obese are more likely to develop high blood pressure, high cholesterol and heart disease as adults.

Long-term obesity also increases the risk of arthritis, diabetes and certain kinds of cancer.

The best way to help your son get back to a healthy weight is to get your entire family to exercise regularly and eat a sensible diet.

Your son is less likely to feel deprived if his food and activities are the same as the rest of the family.

Here are some specific tips: • Encourage at least one hour of exercise every day.

• Plan family activities that involve exercise. Try bicycling, walking, hiking and swimming.

• Limit television, computer and video game time to no more than one to two hours a day.

• Switch to low-fat or nonfat milk (except for children younger than 2 years old and women trying to become pregnant) and reduced-fat cheeses and yogurts.

• Drink water instead of soda or juice.

• Limit fried and high-fat foods.

• Use low-fat cooking methods such as baking, steaming, boiling, grilling and broiling.

• Keep a variety of fruits and vegetables on hand. Serve them as snacks instead of cookies, chips, ice cream or other high-fat foods.

In addition, children should not follow fad diets, which might not have important nutrients children require.

There are two main messages here. First, overweight children are at increased risk of several diseases later in life. Second, children are much more likely to behave in a certain way if they see you behaving that way.
