DETROIT – Northern Illinois’ quest for a third consecutive Mid-American Conference title ended with a 47-27 loss Friday to Bowling Green at Ford Field in Detroit. The Falcons jumped out to a big lead in the first half and held off the Huskies in the second half to win their first conference championship since 1992. NIU allowed a season-high 31 points in the first half and struggled offensively. The Falcons were able to beat NIU’s defense for big plays in the passing game. Bowling Green quarterback Matt Johnson
threw for 393 yards and five touchdowns in the victory. Jordan Lynch threw two interceptions and was largely held in check by Bowling Green’s defense. With 135 rushing yards, Lynch broke his own record for most rushing yards in a single season by a Football Bowl Subdivision quarterback. NIU’s dreams of going to another Bowl Championship Series bowl game also were dashed. It was the first loss for NIU since the Huskies’ 31-10 defeat to Florida State in the Orange Bowl on New Year’s Day. The Huskies will find out Sunday which bowl game they will play in.

Patricia Woods was a sophomore at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana and struggling with chemistry. Fay Stone was a teen whose family had moved from Wisconsin to Tacoma, Wash., because her father took a job there. Mil Misic was a young teen in Minnesota who watched three brothers go to war. All three women’s lives were changed because of events of that day. “I lived with my grandmother in Urbana,” Woods said. “I called my father, who was in the Army, and he said, ‘Honey, why don’t you join the Navy?’ ” She and a friend saw the recruiter and joined the Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service.
