Recent economic growth unexciting POLL YESTERDAY’S This was the fourth year I’ve heard Federal Reserve economist William Strauss speak about the U.S. and state economy, and it’s really starting to feel familiar.

There are two basic themes to our economic outlook: 1. The national economic forecast is for tepid but relatively stable growth, and 2. Illinois’ disastrous financial situation has it lagging behind the performance of most of the rest of the country.

Generally, after a recession such as the one that ended in 2009, economists expect a sweeping expansion. That never happened this time.

It’s just been year after year of inch-byinch expansion, about 2 percent a year, with wages fairly consistent and hiring going up a little more each year. It reminds me of a longterm relationship where things have just become … comfortable. There’s nothing really wrong, there’s just no excitement.

“All in all, it’s disappointing growth compared to the performance we have seen in the past,” said Strauss, who described the economy as “tortoise-like” Thursday at Faranda’s in

After all the losses and wealth destruction we saw during the Great Recession, it would seem as if we deserve a little excitement.

Maybe things would be a little more exciting in Illinois if lawmakers could finally end the standoff in Springfield, come to some agreements about how we’re going to raise the money we need to pay our bills, and pass a budget.

Part of our problem here, it would seem, is our reputation. It’s one we’ve earned, one that’s driving people out and holding the rest of us back.

BOSTON – Some of the nation’s top universities have drawn criticism for making investments in certain industries that activists say run counter to the schools’ mission.

Many financial experts don’t see a problem, contending that endowments have a duty to make sound financial decisions above all else.

Colleges are split. Some have stopped investing in industries such as fossil fuels or prisons or have opted to invest in mutual funds billed as “socially responsible.” Others put few restrictions on their investments.

A look at some of the investments that have stirred debate: TOBACCO Several universities agreed in the 1990s to stop

investing in tobacco, citing its health dangers. And since then, many campuses have banned tobacco entirely. But records obtained by The Associated Press show many colleges continue to invest in major tobacco companies. In 2014, the University of Illinois banned smoking on all campus property. But the same year, records show, it invested in Philip Morris, one of the biggest U.S. tobacco companies.

ALCOHOL The University of Texas system, where alcohol has been blamed for five student deaths since 2005, authorized $2.4 million to expand alcohol prevention programs last year. But in 2014, the system’s investment arm also bought shares of the alcohol makers Bacardi and Anheuser Busch valued at more than $2 million.

Fed economist expects U.S. trend of gradual economic expansion to continue

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The economic forecast for the area includes a cloudy overcast related to employment opportunities and manufacturing, a result of the state budget impasse, a Fed economist told local business leaders Thursday.

Overall, the forecast for the nation’s economy is to expand at a 2 percent rate, a level that economists consider average or “trend” growth, said William Strauss, senior economist and economic adviser with the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. But Illinois has lagged behind the country as a whole in some areas because of its economic challenges.

“I am very, very concerned about where we are as a state ... and the path we’re on,” Strauss said. “It does not seem like our state leaders are able to come up with the means of addressing the problem.”

Strauss returned this year as the keynote speaker for the DeKalb County Economic Development Corp.’s annual economic outlook luncheon. The event brought together local business leaders, elected officials and other stakeholders to hear Strauss’ take on what the year holds economically for the nation, state and local areas. The country is now in the midst of its seventh year of “so-so” expansion after the official end of the Great Recession in 2009, Strauss said.

“Business [leaders] tell me that Bill’s information is concise, and he explains all of the factors that go into the projections and how it might impact our local economy,” said Paul Borek, executive director of DCEDC. DeKalb County, as is much of Illinois, is home to a lot of manufacturing and agricultural activity, and Strauss said he has kept tabs on those industries and how national trends flow down to the state and throughout the county.

“Talking to some of the people attending today’s session, they’ve indicated to me that they’re investing and they’re hiring, so maybe we’ll see a little bit better performance this year than last year,” Strauss said of the manufacturing sector.

But overall, Illinois is one of the states struggling most to recover from job losses suffered during the Great Recession, according to data Strauss presented at the luncheon.

strong globally, it has meant that exporters of agricultural and manufacturing products have seen some challenges, the economist said.

“We’ve had great yields. but, in part because of weak demand from around the world, [and] a stronger [U.S.] currency making our ag products a bit more expensive to farmers, we’ve seen a little less demand,” Strauss said.

State Rep. Bob Pritchard, R-Hinckley, was among the elected officials who attended the luncheon. He said he has relayed to the governor the impact the logjam in Springfield is having in places like DeKalb County.

“We have a lot assets in this state that are wonderful,” Pritchard said.

“The problem with this budget impasse is we’re tearing down those assets.”

This year will mark the first time that DeKalb County will have an enterprise zone designation in effect.

DCEDC touted that at the luncheon, with signage and other literature on display. The state granted the economic tool to the area last summer, and it will include almost all the available light-industrial property in the county.

Strauss said participating municipalities that will use the marketing tool, which will allow local officials to woo businesses here using tax incentives and other discounts, still have to weigh the economic risk.

“It has a chance of attracting some business,” he said. “If you subsidize too much then the cost of having that business in the locality will not make up for how much taxpayer money you’ve given to do those kinds of attractions.”

DeKalb to pay Bemis $1.5M to keep dealership

DeKALB – City officials agreed to give Brian Bemis Toyota almost twice what the dealership asked for in February 2015 to get the company to stay in DeKalb rather than relocate to Sycamore.

DeKalb City Council members agreed to give the dealership $1.5 million in tax increment financing at a special meeting Thursday, with 7th Ward Alderman Tony Faivre absent and 4th Ward Alderman Bob Snow voting against the agreement.

The city declined to give Bemis financial incentives for the renovation project in 2015, in part because the requested funding of $650,000 covered more than 20 percent of the project, which goes against city guidelines.

Under this agreement, the city will fund almost 70 percent of the $2.2 million project.

The city of Sycamore offered financial incentives for the company to set up shop within its borders in February. Faced with the loss of $150,000 in annual sales tax revenue, DeKalb has been trying to work out a deal to get them to stay.

At council’s last meeting, two fi-

nancial incentives were proposed, one of $650,000 and another of $1 million, both on a forgivable 10-year loan agreement. In the end, the city agreed to pay $1.5 million upfront.

The loan will be forgiven over a 15year period.

Snow said he voted no because the deal didn’t fall within the parameters of Monday’s discussion. Other aldermen said they were pleased with the deal.

“I’m certainly glad staff, City Council and the mayor made an effort to reach out and keep this business here in DeKalb,” 2nd Ward Alderman Bill Finucane said. “We want to make it

very clear that DeKalb is going to be business friendly.”

Sycamore Mayor Ken Mundy declined to give his viewpoint of the situation.

“I have nothing to say about that,” he said.”This is between the dealership and the city of DeKalb.”

The renovated dealership and service center should be complete and open for business within a year, City Attorney Dean Frieders said.

“Their plans for the renovations are essentially done,” he said. “We expect they will be coming to us for building permits very quickly and start construction this construction season.”

Police: Cortland woman tried to stab boyfriend for dumping out her beer

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Police said a Cortland woman tried to stab her boyfriend Wednesday morning when he poured her beer down the drain.

Tanya Marulewski, 37, of the 300 block of South Somonauk Road, faces charges of aggravated domestic battery and domestic battery after a fight in which her boyfriend suffered a cut on his hand, court records show.

If convicted of the most serious

charge, aggravated domestic battery, Marulewski could be sentenced to from three to seven years in prison.

Marulewski’s boyTanya friend came home at Marulewski 1 0 : 3 0 a . m . , s a w h e r drinking a beer, and tried to pour the remainder of the case down the drain, court records show.

When she was unsuccessful in

getting the beer back, Marulewski grabbed a knife and tried to stab him, but missed and punctured the beer instead, leaving a cut on her boyfriend’s hand.

Maruklewski has five pending misdemeanor cases in DeKalb County and a history of not appearing in court, DeKalb County Judge Philip Montgomery said Thursday.

Her bond was set at $10,000, meaning she must post $1,000 bail to be released from the DeKalb County Jail.

She is due back in court Monday.

BRIEF Crash sends DeKalb man to hospital

CORTLAND – A man was taken to the hospital after after rolling his vehicle into a ditch Wednesday afternoon.

John R. Kicpera, 31, of the 16100 block of Barber Greene Road, Sycamore, was driving on Somonauk Road south of Keslinger Road in Cortland about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. He lost control of the his 2000 Buick sedan and rolled into a ditch when he reached for a lighter, according to a DeKalb County Sheriff’s news release.

The Cortland Fire Department transported Kicpera to Kishwaukee Hospital, and he was cited with improper lane usage and driving without insurance.

Mangum resigns from DeKalb Park District

DeKALB – Superintendent of Recreation Amy Doll will serve as interim executive director of the DeKalb Park District until the board finds a permanent replacement for Jason Mangum.

The board unanimously approved a separation agreement with Mangum at its meeting Thursday after more than an hour in executive session. Mangum has been on paid leave since February.

“His contract would expire in midJune,” board President Phil Young said. “And the contract says by the end of February, the board has to see if we want to go forward with the contract.”

Young said that during discussions with Mangum, the director expressed interest in resigning. Mangum was not present at Thursday’s meeting and was not immediately available for comment after 9 p.m.

Under the separation agreement, Mangum receives his normal salary and benefits through June, including insurance and $500 monthly car payments. Mangum will receive the district staff benefits including free use of the facilities for two years, Young said.

After June, the district will continue to pay Mangum an additional month’s car payment as well as continue paying his monthly salary of about $9,500 through September,

Young said.

Young said that the resignation agreement didn’t reflect on Mangum’s work performance and it was a mutually agreed upon outcome.

“Sometimes the goals and directions the board wants to go in are different than his,” Young said. “I told Jason if he wants a letter of reference, I’d be glad to give it. I think he is a decent honorable guy, its just that this is a case where the board wants certain directives. I can’t pinpoint any specific thing.”

Young said the district was a firm believer in promoting from within and it was possible that Doll could take over the position permanently.

In the interim, Doll will be paid a monthly stipend of $1,500.

“We also have other people that might be interested within the district,” he said. “We haven’t figured out yet the exact time frame we are going to do this, whether its going to be six months, eight months or three months.”

Doll said she hasn’t decided if she is going to pursue the permanent role or not, but was looking forward to continuing to work with the district in the new role.

“I really love working with the staff here,” she said. “I’m excited. The last few weeks have felt kind of up in the air about where we are headed.

To just have a little calmness, even though it is an interim position, there is a little bit of direction and I think that helps with the staff.”

DeKALB – The developers behind Park 88 want the DeKalb City Council to reconsider some of what they call the “more stringent” aspects of the development agreement in a bid to lower costs and make the park more attractive to businesses.

Future development at the park could bring 4.6 million square feet of new building space, an estimated $5 million in annual property taxes and 1,382 new jobs, said Mark Goode, principal of Venture One Real Estate, which along with Clayco Realty Group is a co-developer of the industrial park just north of Interstate 88.

There are 225 acres in the park that have yet to be fully developed.

That future development isn’t guaranteed and might not come at all if the development agreement isn’t changed, Goode told the City Council at a special meeting Thursday morning.

The development agreement was approved in 2004.

“We are in an amazingly competitive environment right now,” he said.

City Manager Anne Marie Gaura said city staff would review the developer’s proposals and provide the City Council a comprehensive review at a future meeting.

“There’s need to amend the agreement – it was created in a different time – and there are different realities in the competitive marketplace that DeKalb is sitting in right now,” DeKalb Community Development Director Ellen Divita told the council.

“Staff believes that there is room to meet in the middle to meet the needs of the city and the developer.”

Senate OKs $3.8B spending bill

The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – Illinois Senate Democrats passed a $3.8 billion funding bill for colleges and social services Thursday amid Republican objections that the state doesn’t have the money to fulfill the proposal’s promises.

Democrats used their considerable majority in the chamber to easily pass the bill on a 39-18 vote, which has already cleared the House. The proposal would appropriate nearly $1.9 billion to colleges and universities that have not received funding since July 1, when the current year’s budget should’ve taken effect.

The bill’s passage came on the day Comptroller Leslie Munger told a Senate committee that the state owes nearly $9 billion to vendors who provide services to the state. That tab could top $10 billion by June 30, the end of the

CHICAGO – Chicago’s police board on Thursday presented the mayor with the names of three final contenders to become police chief, saying they offer the best chance to restore the department’s reputation that was shattered by the release of a video of a white police officer fatally shooting a black teen followed by a spike in violence.

5 tornadoes touched down when storms swept Illinois

PEORIA – Tornadoes touched down at least five times in central and western Illinois during the storms that blew through the state this week, destroying homes and causing some injuries.

National Weather Service damage surveys show tornadoes touched down Tuesday near Curran, Good Hope, Trivoli, Moline and Peoria. The storms passed through the state around the time polls were closing in the Illinois primary election.

“You could hear the wind pick up,” said Kathy Madrigal, who took cover in her basement with her husband in Rock Island County. “I said to my husband, ‘That sounds like a train.’ Then we came outside and found all this devastation.”

Authorities in Rock Island County said the tornado sent 10 people to hospitals but none had life-threatening injuries.

About 40 homes were damaged and about a half-dozen were destroyed. The twister had wind speeds of up to 130 mph.

Chicago man found guilty of threatening lawmaker

WHEATON – A 52-year-old Chicago man has been found guilty of making threatening telephone calls to an Illinois state representative three years ago.

Stephen Bona was found guilty Thursday of two felony counts of threatening a public official. Authorities said Bona called the office of state Rep. Jeanne Ives of Wheaton on March 22, 2013, and left a threatening message and was charged with misdemeanor disorderly

Businessman pleads guilty to $550K tax evasion

CHICAGO – A Palatine businessman has pleaded guilty to failing to pay more than $550,000 in personal income taxes.

Federal prosecutors said 59-year-old William Daddono admitted in a plea agreement Wednesday that he didn’t pay taxes on nearly $2 million in personal income. He is the owner of a Schaumburg real estate appraisal company.

Prosecutors said Daddono tried to hide the earnings by depositing the money in a corporate account. They said he then withdrew the money for personal use and didn’t report it on his individual federal tax returns.

Daddono faces up to three year in prison and a fine. He is to be sentenced June 10.

Conservatives search for plan to stop Trump The ASSOCIATED PRESS SUN CITY, Ariz. – Fearful of a Donald Trump nomination to lead the GOP, conservative leaders huddled privately in Washington, D.C., on Thursday in search of a plan to stop the billionaire businessman. His Republican rivals braced for another Trump victory next week, this time in delegate-rich Arizona.

The GOP has an eager alternative in Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, yet some party leaders are exploring “other avenues” instead of rallying behind the fiery conservative, an ominous sign that Republican leaders’ deep dislike of Cruz complicates their overwhelming concern about Trump.

“The establishment is like a wounded animal, now cornered,” said Mark Meckler, an early leader in the tea party movement. “They are terrified, irrational and flailing wildly.”

Even after being denied victory in five contests Tuesday, Cruz insists he still has a path to the 1,237 delegates necessary to claim the Republican presidential nomination. But in a strategy memo obtained by The Associated Press, his campaign essentially cedes Arizona’s March 22 primary to Trump and acknowledges Cruz must win 79 percent of the remaining delegates before the GOP’s July national convention.

“This is the moment for all those who believe in a strong America to come together and craft a new path forward,” Cruz declared on

Twitter while conservatives were meeting in downtown Washington to brainstorm ways to stop his party’s front-runner.

Organizers of the meeting included conservative commentator Erick Erickson and Christian conservative leader Bob Fischer.

The goal, as stated in the invitation, was “to strategize how to defeat Donald Trump for the Republican nomination, and if he is the Republican nominee for president, to offer a true conservative candidate in the general election.”

The group released a statement after roughly four hours behind closed doors calling for a “unity ticket that unites the Republican Party.”

While many in the room supported Cruz, they declined to endorse the Texas senator or the only other remaining presidential contender, Ohio Gov. John Kasich, and instead urged all former Republican presidential candidates to unite against Trump. They also embraced the possibility of a contested convention.

“Lastly, we intend to keep our options open as to other avenues to oppose Donald Trump,” they said, an apparent reference to a possible third-party candidacy that might stop Trump but would likely sacrifice the Republican Party’s chances in the general election to Democrat Hillary Clinton.

On Capitol Hill, South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham said he’d help Cruz raise campaign cash in the hope of stopping Trump’s march.

Be prepared during severe weather season Tuesday night’s thunderstorms provided a preview of severe weather season in DeKalb County.

The Illinois Emergency Management Agency offers safety tips for tornadoes and thunderstorms on its website: www.illinois.gov/ready.

Last year brought a frightening reminder of the power of nature, as an EF4 tornado destroyed Fairdale leaving two people dead and several families homeless.

Tornado safety tips:

• Before a tornado, review your family emergency plan so your family knows what it should do. Stock your emergency kit and make sure your family knows where it is. Be prepared to be self-sufficient for at least three days.

Establish a safe zone in your home, preferably in the basement or in a small interior room or hallway. Make sure everyone knows where to go for shelter. Have a National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration weather radio or an AM/FM radio in your house that everyone knows how to use. Make sure your radio is battery-operable and you have a fresh supply of batteries on hand.

• During a tornado, take shelter immediately. Go to your pre-identified safe zone to protect yourself from glass and other flying objects. If possible, seek shelter under a piece of large, sturdy furniture, such as a large table or workbench, to protect yourself from falling debris or flying objects. Stay away from windows and don’t open them.

If you’re not at home, seek shelter in the basement or an interior room of a nearby, sturdy building. Do not try to outrun a tornado in your car. Instead, leave it immediately. If no shelter is available, lie flat in a low spot with your arms and hands protecting your head. Contrary to popular belief, seeking shelter underneath a highway or railroad overpass does not provide any measurable safety.

Thunderstorm safety tips:

• Avoid handling metal, electrical equipment, telephones, bathtubs, water faucets and sinks, because electric current from lightning can travel through wires and pipes.

• If you are outside, take cover in a stable facility. Avoid taking shelter under trees.

• Tune in to local TV/radio channels for emergency advisories and instructions.

• Avoid walking through water that has seeped into your home; it might contain hazardous materials.

• If you are asked to evacuate your home, follow instructions given to you by emergency personnel.

• Call your local public works department or village hall to report fallen trees or tree limbs, or clogged catch basins.

• Call your local public works department or village hall to report flooded streets.

• Avoid downed power lines and broken gas lines.

Report them to 911.

Well, golly. Let’s take a look at what she was saying.

This, for example: “Our commander in chief has to be able to defend our country, not embarrass it; engage our allies, not alienate them; defeat our adversaries, not embolden them. When we hear a candidate for president call for rounding up 12 million immigrants, banning all Muslims from entering the United States, when he embraces torture, that doesn’t make him strong; it makes him wrong.”

Banning Muslims?

Torture? Rounding up immigrants? Where are the punch lines, Madam Secretary? If you can’t find a joke in this material, how will you ever make us laugh about the Islamic

State group?

Or this: “Our campaign is for the steelworker I met in Ohio on Sunday night,” Clinton continued, “who’s laid off but hoping to get back to work. It’s for the mother I met in Miami whose five children haven’t seen their father since he was deported.

She dreams of a day when deportations end and families are reunited on a path to citizenship in America.

And it is for the mothers I stood with in Chicago yesterday, who have lost children to gun violence.”

Not one smile during that whole paragraph.

See what he means?

Fox News’ Howard Kurtz tweeted: “Hillary shouting her speech. She has the floor; a more conversational tone might be better for connecting with folks at home.”

Uh-oh.

Kurtz’s follow-up tweet: “Getting attacked for saying Hillary shouted.

Was not saying she was shrill. I’ve just heard her deliver more effective speeches.”

This reminded me of another primary night – the one two weeks ago, when MSNBC cut away from Clinton’s live victory speech so that three guys could talk about how she needs to speak more softly.

Okey-dokey then.

Politics is still a home away from home for women, apparently.

Takes me back to a moment a

couple of years ago when a Republican U.S. senator, who clearly had no idea that I was married to one of his Democratic ncolleagues, asked me what I do with my days.

“I write for a living,” I told him.

“Good for you,” he said, swinging his fist across his chest.

The smile on his face made me think he’d misunderstood me to say that I had just learned how to make my own aprons.

Some men hear what they want to hear, and too many men don’t want to hear from women at all.

This is an unhappy century for them, and it’s only going to get worse.

One grandmother barreling her way toward the presidency is bound to work up all kinds of other women who’ve had it up to here with the catcall mentality of men who measure our worth by our ability to make them feel better about their limited view of us.

“Where will it all end?” they wonder.

At the White House, I’d guess.

Funds needed now for fight against Zika virus Republicans in Congress are refusing to allocate emergency funding to fight the Zika virus because, they said, the Obama administration could transfer money that was previously budgeted for the response to Ebola.

This is a senseless and dangerous idea.

Last month, President Barack Obama asked Congress to provide $1.8 billion to help research the Zika virus, develop a vaccine, give assistance to countries like Brazil that are on the front lines of the outbreak and prevent cases in the United States.

This is a modest sum and there is no good reason for Congress to refuse to allocate the money. A delay could put many thousands of people at risk.

There have already been Zika cases in Puerto Rico and other territories

and the virus has been observed in people in Illinois, Florida and other states after they traveled to affected countries.

Zika is a mosquito-borne virus, first identified in Uganda, for which there is no cure or vaccine. Although infection is generally accompanied by mild symptoms, the outbreak appears to be linked to a big increase in microcephaly, an irreversible condition in which babies are born with underdeveloped heads. Health experts say Zika may also be causing an increase in Guillain-Barré syndrome, a disorder that causes the immune system to attack nerves.

Directing the administration to reallocate money from Ebola to Zika would rob one public health emergency to deal with another. Ebola has

not been eradicated; there were new cases reported in Sierra Leone as recently as January. Public health experts have said shifting money would hurt efforts to develop and stockpile an effective Ebola vaccine as well as delay efforts to improve the public health systems in African countries.

Zika could become a much bigger problem later this year as mosquitoes move north with warmer weather.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention expects thousands of cases in pregnant women in Puerto Rico, which is in the middle of a major economic and financial crisis.

Health experts say they fully expect that mosquitoes and people will increasingly bring the virus to the mainland, especially to humid states like Florida and Texas. Zika can also

be transmitted through sex, which could be another big problem.

The Obama administration has been trying hard not to make the same mistakes with Zika that it made with its slow response to Ebola. The C.D.C. has devoted hundreds of people and some of its labs to the virus.

A vaccine is under development and could be ready for testing later this year, according to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, though it could take years to produce an approved vaccine.

Such government programs cost money, and the administration already is having to divert resources from other diseases, like dengue fever. That’s why Congress needs to allocate dedicated funds for Zika now.

Now, by “girl,” I mean a former U.S. senator and secretary of state who is likely to be the first female president of these allegedly united states.

As for “the world,” let’s narrow it down. We’re talking mean men who apparently spend much of their day breathing into paper bags because they’re not even allowed to ask a secretary to grab them a cuppa joe anymore without someone from HR signing them up for diversity training.

So now we’ve got this Hillary woman going all presidential on us.

She’s everywhere. Giving speeches.

Declaring victories. Starring in one town hall after another. How much suffering must a good ol’ boy endure?

“God,” they pray, “pick another name.”

On Tuesday night, Hillary Clinton did what even Hillary Clinton thought she wouldn’t do: She swept the primaries. Missouri (barely), Illinois, North Carolina, Florida – she won them and my home state of Ohio, which is in the Eastern time zone, people. Boy am I tired of that question.

Amsden serves as a faculty member of Beacon Institutes, a local church based higher education extension of Beacon University. She travels extensively throughout the U.S. for the seminary sharing her scriptural insights with the next generation of leaders in the body of Christ.

Amsden’s skill in preaching has opened many doors of ministry in local churches and conferences.

Along with her extensive travel in the U.S., she has ministered in China, Japan, Mexico, Canada, England, Malaysia, Costa Rica, Panama, Africa, the Philippines and the Bahamas.

Laboring alongside her husband, Pastor Dennis Amsden, Patti Amsden served as co-pastor of Son Life Church in Collinsville for almost three decades.

The senior pastoral role of the local assembly, which was pioneered by the Amsdens, was transferred to their son, David Amsden, in 2007.

The common text selected for this year’s Big Read is “In the Time of Butterflies,” by Julia Alvarez. The book is based on the true story of the Mirabal sisters who opposed the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo in the Dominican Republic in the 1950s. They became symbols of feminist resistance for

their efforts. The novel is written as if it is both by and about the Mirabal sisters.

The Family Reading Night at Kishwaukee College will include a variety of family-friendly activities, including cooking and crafts, as well as reading from the novel.

The Big Read is a program developed by the National Endowment

for the Arts to emphasize reading.

Annually, participating local communities encourage reading by selecting a single work of American literature and then design events and activities that are held throughout the community over three to four weeks.

The Triduum, or three days, (Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Vigil) has been set at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in DeKalb.

It begins with Maundy Thursday at 6 p.m. March 24. The congregation will gather in the parish hall for a family-style Mediterranean meal in the spirit of the last supper Jesus ate with his disciples. Holy Communion will follow in the second half of the service with a procession to the Altar of Repose with the reserved sacrament (bread from communion).

On Good Friday, March 25, the Triduum continues at noon and 6 p.m. At noon, parishioners will pray the Stations of the Cross and read the Passion narrative. At 6 p.m., there will be a reading of the Passion narrative from the Gospel of John.

Music will be part of the 6 p.m. service and child care will be available.

The Easter Vigil liturgy begins in darkness on March 26 with song and story as a reminder of the journey from creation to Easter. A festive reception follows the service.

Children are welcome at all services, and encouraged to attend and participate. Too close to bedtime? Bring them out in their pajamas. Bedtime snacks, blankets and stuffed animals in the pews also are welcome.

The Easter Day service will be at 10:30 a.m. March 27. It will be a full festival Holy Communion featuring music led by the Adult/Youth Choir and the Children’s Choirs. An Easter egg hunt will follow outdoors (indoors if weather is inclement).

Knights fall to Burlington Central in opener

ecarifio@shawmedia.com BURLINGTON – Kaneland coach Mike Kuefler said he was hoping his Knights would combine quality atbats with manufacturing some runs when they opened the season at Burlington Central in a clash of Sweet 16 teams from a year ago.

The Knights did half of that, forcing Rockets ace Emily Kisch deep into a lot of counts. But they failed to get runs across the plate, stranding nine runners in a 4-2 loss.

“We’re a young team, and what we came in with today was what we needed,” said Kuefler, in his first year coaching a Kaneland team that finished third in Class 3A last year. “We had some quality at-bats, we worked the count, we manufactured some runs.”

The Rockets, also playing their opener, reached the sectional semifinal round in Class 3A, losing to eventual state runner-up Marengo – the team that beat Kaneland at state. The Knights led 2-1 and had the bases loaded with no outs in the fifth, but failed to score. Burlington Central took the lead for good with three in the bottom of the sixth.

“It’s the first game outside, we’re facing an excellent pitcher in Kisch, she throws well and to face that kind of pitching the first day out ...” Kuefler said. “I felt my kids were disciplined at the plate. Every at-bat we had we took her deep in the count. We were offensive-minded when we got runners on base. Offensively we did our job, but we left too many runs on base.”

Kisch dominated early, striking out five in a row at one point and finishing the game with nine strikeouts. Burlington Central scored an unearned run off Kaneland starter Courtney Davis in the third.

In the top of the fourth, Hannah Theobald doubled home Meg Cohrs with one out, then Davis hit an RBI two-out single to right to give the Knights the lead.

The next inning, Lexi Abruzzo, Aly Jesinowski and Morgan Weber hit consecutive singles to start the frame, but after a Fielder’s choice by Cohrs, Kisch struck out the last two Kaneland batters of the frame to escape the jam.

“I am so proud of our girls,” firstyear Burlington Central coach Erica Maisto said. “It was the first game of the season, it was just great to get out and see what we’ve got. They really stepped up that fifth inning when we were down, and everyone did their part.”

Schrubble was called safe and Burlington Central went on to beat Kaneland, 4-2.

The Rockets took the lead for good in the sixth, with Kristina Ahlers starting things off with a single, then scoring on a double by Kisch. Gretchen Schrubbe singled home Kisch then eventually scored on a Fielder’s choice by Danielle Yurgil.

“Kaneland, they’re a great team, they were putting pressure on us and I was just glad we could withstand it,” Maisto said. “Kaneland had the bases loaded with no outs and our defense was just able to focus in. Emily did a great job, but it’s a team effort.”

The Knights got runners to second and third with one out in the seventh, but Theobald ripped a line drive right at Schrubbe at third base, and she was able to turn the unassisted double play to end the game.

Weber had two of the Knights’ 10 hits in the game, as did Abruzzo. Davis pitched the complete game for the Knights, allowing three earned runs, five hits and striking out three.

“The first three innings we were playing to win this game,” Kuefler said. “The last two, three innings it seemed like we sat back on our heels.” Burlington Central’s Lindsay Jamrozek dives in attempt to take away a Kaneland hit.

right field into the strong wind and finished with four RBIs. “Taking a lot of tee work lately, so I felt pretty confident coming in,” Hansen said. “They gave me some good pitches and I took advantage of it.”

Lucca reached base all three times with two walks and had an RBI single to left field, No. 9 hitter Nick Adamczyk scored three runs and Nick Uecker added two runs for the Cogs, who finished with seven hits. It took awhile for the Cogs’ offense to get going – they were scoreless in the first two innings, before scoring three in the third, five in the fourth and three in the fourth.

“The focus in practice has been hitting, hitting, hitting,” Butler said. “We have depth in pitching, we have a very good infield, we need practice with hitting, hitting, hitting. That’s been the weak point.”

As for Huffman, he had his share of dominating moments – he struck out the side in the second inning on 10 pitches – but ran into trouble in the fourth. He allowed an inning-opening double that the wind carried and gave Uecker trouble in left field before walking the next two batters.

Somonauk (0-1) got its only run when the Cogs (1-0) had a passed ball with the bases loaded.

Huffman followed that by striking out the next three batters. While the strong wind was toward the third-base line, Huffman refused to say that it was a factor in his control issues.

“The weather is the weather, you have to make adjustments,” he said. “I didn’t do all the right things today, but did enough to get the ‘W,’ that’s all that matters.”

The Cogs travel to Indian Creek at 4:30 p.m. Monday.

Barbs baseball Scott wins pair of matches, advances to bounces back second day of NCAA Championships with easy win

DAILY CHRONICLE The DeKalb baseball team bounced back from a tough season opener with an 11-2 win Thursday at Elgin.

Joey Sauser went 4 for 5 and Nate Sisler was 2 for 3 for the Barbs, who finished with 14 hits.

The win came a day after the Barbs (1-1) squandered a four-run lead in the seventh inning and lost 9-8 at Sandwich in eight innings.

The Barbs will play a doubleheader at Belvidere starting at 10 a.m. Saturday.

SOFTBALL G-K falls to Somonauk in nine: Ashley Peter-

son was 2 for 4 in her varsity debut, but the Cogs lost 9-8 to Somonauk in nine innings.

Dani Mathey also went 2 for 4, while Kendyl Strack took the loss in the circle.

GIRLS SOCCER Kaneland routs IMSA: The Knights had no

problem scoring in their season-opener, beating Illinois Math and Science Academy 10-0 in Maple Park.

Gabrielle Cano, Holly Collingbourne and Becca Richtman all scored two goals for the Knights, who made the sectional finals last season.

Kaneland hosts Belvidere at 10 a.m. Saturday.

IC edges G-K: Jacklyn Bouma had the lone goal and Indian Creek earned a 1-0 victory over Genoa-Kingston in the season-opener in Shabbona.

Bouma’s goal came at the 37th minute.

Northern Illinois wrestler Shawn Scott is finding himself in uncharted territory for the second consecutive season.

A year after making his first trip to the NCAA Championships, the redshirt junior wrestled his way to the second day of the 2016 NCAA Championships at Madison Square Garden in New York.

“It was important to me just making the second day, it’s a confidence-boost,” Scott said.

Last year, Scott went home after losing his first two matches in the opening day.

Scott won his first two matches Thursday, edging John Bolich (Lehigh) 2-1 and No. 9 seed Reuben Franklin (Cal State Bakers-

field) 8-5 before falling, 3-2, to No. 8 seed Aaron Studebacker (Nebraska) in the evening.

Scott became the first unseeded wrestler for Northern Illinois to beat a top 10 seed at the NCAA Championships since 2003. Scott trailed 5-2 with five seconds left against Franklin before an incredible rally with a takedown and near fall.

“It was very exciting but I didn’t consider it an upset because I knew I could beat him,” said Scott, who is now 24-10 on the year.

He will face the winner of Joshua Dasilveira (21-11 at Arizona State) and Bryce Barnes (21-11 at Army).

While the Huskies brought four wrestlers to the NCAA Championships for the first time since 2007, Scott is the only one to

survive to the second day.

Redshirt freshman Austin Eicher, who won the Mid-American Conference tournament at 133 despite entering as the No. 7 seed, dropped his first two matches – falling 7-3 to Geoffrey Alexander (Maryland) in the first round and 6-0 to Joey Palmer (Oregon State) in the consolation round. Eicher finished the season 19-13.

Redshirt freshman Steve Bleise also lost both of his matches, falling 6-3 to Seth Gross (South Dakota St.) and 13-5 Jamel Hudson (Hofstra) to finish the year 27-10.

Senior Andrew Morse lost 21-4 to No. 2 Thomas Gantt (North Carolina State) before falling 7-6 to Greg Flournoy (George Mason) to end his final season with a record of 6-7.

GENOA – It was either a walk or a strikeout for the Somonauk baseball team against Genoa-Kingston pitcher Brady Huffman.

The Cogs’ ace right-hander was overpowering but had some control issues as Genoa-Kingston cruised to an 11-1 win in five innings in the season opener against the Bobcats on a windy Thursday afternoon in Genoa.

Huffman threw a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts and six walks on 92 pitches as the teams played on the Genoa-Kingston junior varsity field because the varsity field isn’t ready yet.

“Four walks is too many – I was everywhere today,” Huffman said. “I have to be more consistent with the strike zone. I’ll pound it, pound it, pound it

and this game I was just everywhere.”

It was the first time this season that Huffman has thrown outdoors, Genoa-Kingston coach Roger Butler said.

Last season, Huffman went 7-3 with a 1.00 ERA and struck out 137 and walked only 23 in 70 innings – setting the school record for strikeouts in a game (19).

On Thursday, the Genoa-Kingston fielders didn’t have much to do.

Somonauk’s only hit came on a double to left field in the fourth, and the Bobcats grounded out to second baseman Tommy Lucca twice and popped up to shortstop Andrew Caldwell. The rest were either strikeout victims or reached via walk.

“First game stuff, first time pitching outside,” Butler said of Huffman’s upand-down day. “Very good day today.”

The Bulls continued to make sure of that Thursday.

As they’ve done far too often this season, in a game in which they were expected to play the role of bully, they instead found themselves trying to survive a 19-win Brooklyn Nets team.

Just another reminder that very little comes easy for this team.

Thanks to 25 points from Doug McDermott, as well as Jimmy Butler’s 22 points, the Bulls picked it up late to beat Brooklyn, 118-102, at the United Center.

A solid win after a back-to-back, but considering they held a 24-point lead at one point, not exactly flexing their playoff muscles here in mid-March.

“A lack of urgency coming out of the gate in the second half,” coach Fred Hoiberg said of a third quarter in which they allowed the Nets to score 37 points.

“Didn’t have that edge. It was both ends.

“We got it back a little bit. Our whole bench gave us really good minutes.”

The win did move the Bulls to 34-33 on the season, giving them the half-game edge over idle Detroit for the No. 8 spot in the Eastern Conference playoff seedings.

But lost in all the talk of making a run into the playoffs was Taj Gibson again showing that “Brooklyn tough” just might have a little bit more staying power than “Chicago tough.”

Despite having to leave the game during the Wednesday loss in Washington with a right hamstring that’s been grabbing at him for weeks, Gibson decided with all that was at stake he would go ahead and put his health aside for the betterment of his team.

Basically, he decided not to listen to his body.

“Understand that the playoff race is close,” Gibson said. “We’re going to need everybody. I feel something positive coming. … but just trying to be there for the guys.”

An act that didn’t go unnoticed by teammates or his coach.

“Taj is a warrior,” Hoiberg said.

“There’s no doubt about that. He’s hurting with this hamstring. He wanted to continue to play [Wednesday] night but it just wasn’t smart to keep him in there the way he felt.

Basically, the antithesis of the Derrick Rose attitude.

Rose has stated on several occasions the past few weeks that if his body wasn’t right he would sit, no matter what the circumstances – regular season or playoffs.

And although Gibson scored only 12 points and grabbed six rebounds, considering the frontcourt was without Joakim Noah (season-ending shoulder surgery) and Pau Gasol (right knee), it was an important moment for a team searching for

something to build on.

Especially with Gibson guarding the Nets’ Brook Lopez and helping hold him to nine points. Lopez was averaging 20.8 a game.

“Taj knows how important he is to this team, whether he’s starting or coming off the bench,” Butler said after the win. “That’s big for us because when you see a guy doing that, that just shows how tough he is. If you can go then you go. If you can’t you can’t. But Taj is like, ‘Yo, I’m going.’ Respect him.

“This would have been a tough win [to get] without him.”

Fat-soluble vitamins can cause harm Dear Dr. K: When I asked my doctor about supplements, she said something about water-soluble and fat-soluble vitamins. What is the difference? And why does it matter?

Dear Reader: A vitamin is a natural substance that is required in small amounts for human life. As your doctor said, there are water-soluble vitamins and fat-soluble vitamins.

Water-soluble vitamins dissolve in water; they are packed into the watery portions of the foods you eat. Vitamin C and the B vitamins are water-soluble vitamins, for example.

Water-soluble vitamins have many tasks in the body. They are involved in energy production; they help cells multiply; and they make collagen, which knits together wounds, supports blood vessel walls and forms a base for teeth and bones.

These vitamins are absorbed directly from the digestive tract into the bloodstream. They travel to all parts of your body that contain water – and that means all parts of your body. Every one of the 13 trillion cells in our body contains water.

And the space between those cells contains water, too – as, of course, does the blood.

Your kidneys continuously regulate levels of water-soluble vitamins. They eliminate the excess out of the body in your urine. For this reason, the risk of harm from consuming large amounts of water-soluble vitamin supplements is relatively small.

The fat-soluble vitamins are vitamins A, D, E and K. They keep many parts of your body in good repair. They are essential for bone formation; they protect your vision; and they protect your cells and DNA against damage from unstable molecules.

Fat-soluble vitamins enter the bloodstream through channels in the wall of the intestine. However, because they dissolve

These proteins act as carriers to allow fat-soluble vitamins to interact with water-rich blood and cells. (I’ve put an illustration of this process on my website, www.askdoctork.com.)

Fat-soluble vitamins get stored in fat tissues and the liver. Your body squirrels away any excess you consume and doles it out gradually to meet your needs.

Because these vitamins are stored for long periods, however, dangerous levels can build up. As a result, excessive intake of fat-soluble vitamins is more likely to cause you harm than taking too many water-soluble vitamin supplements.

A dangerous overdose is most likely to happen if you take high doses of a vitamin supplement over a prolonged period of time. It’s very rare to get too much of any vitamin just from food, but it can happen.

As a medical student, I saw a young woman who had an obsessive desire to eat carrots. Lots of carrots. Carrots contain chemicals called carotenes that are transformed into vitamin A in the body.

Her skin and the whites of her eyes were slightly but definitely orange. With several months off her unusual diet, the orange hue disappeared. Fortunately, she suffered no health problems.

Dear Abby: I DEAR ABBY was in a six-year relationship Jeanne with a woman.

Phillips We shared a home and have a child together, whom I support. She has primary custody, and I provide financial support and exercise my visitations regularly.

We broke up six months ago, and she immediately moved a man into the house. Since they split up, she has done this again with a new person.

I have moved on and am content being single and focusing on my career and parenting my son when he’s with me. Where I struggle is when these new men want to meet me. I don’t feel obligated to shake their hands, be polite and friendly or be a supportive, smiling face.

I’m disturbed by the speed she moves into other relationships. I feel like it sets a bad example for my son regardless of how “nice” these men are. There is no record of abuse, and I do believe my ex is a good mother, just maybe lonely and very dependent on having companionship.

I understand life goes on and people move on, but at what point is this unhealthy? Am I wrong for not wanting to be friends with my ex and her new “guy friend” whenever she decides she should be accompanied for custody exchange? I refuse to speak to or acknowledge these men. I am not confrontational, but I literally have nothing to say. Any advice how to handle this moving forward? – Faking Smiles Dear Faking Smiles: I subscribe to the philosophy that one can never have enough friends.

You don’t have to approve of your ex’s boyfriends, but it is in your child’s best interest to maintain a relationship that approximates cordiality. It won’t hurt you to shake hands and be on a first-name basis with the men who occupy space in your son’s life even temporarily. When we can’t change something, sometimes we have to accept it – and that’s what you would be wise to do.

Dear Abby: I’m sure there are many others who would like to know this: I’m trying to downsize. I have a World Book Encyclopedia set from the ’70s, plus yearbooks I’d like to find a home for. My kids are gone and living on their own, and the books haven’t been opened in years. I refuse to throw them in the recycling bin. A solution popped up that might help you: Immigrants who are learning English as a second language may be able to use them if you offer them in a yard sale. A high school in your area also might be able to use them.

She won the first trick on the board, cashed the spade ace, ruffed a spade with the heart five, played a diamond to the ace, ruffed another spade, overtook the club jack with dummy’s queen, ruffed a third spade, crossed to the club ace, ruffed the now-high spade seven, and had two top trumps on the board. It was a beautiful dummy reversal.
