She said she doesn’t qualify for need-based student aid, and had been depending on the loans and out-of-pocket payments to pay her tuition. So when she learned that she won a contest that gave her 12 free credit hours this semester, she was ecstatic, she said.

Kishwaukee College announced at the end of the fall semester that it was holding the contest to award up to 12 hours of free tuition to one student, selected at random, who had registered for the spring semester by a certain date. Schons, who had signed up at the end of 2015 for 12 credit hours, was notified by the school that she was the contest winner.

She has been trying to figure out exactly want she wants to do for a career ever since she graduated from Genoa-Kingston High School in 2010. Right after high school, Schons gave nursing a try, enrolling in the program at Kishwaukee College. That didn’t do it for her, so she

returned to the community college on another path. Now she’s ready to graduate in May. Rhonda Gillespie: When you heard that you had won, what was your reaction?

Paige Schons: Shock. I was not expecting that. I was definitely shocked, and very excited and happy. I am thankful that they did this. It was a really great opportunity, and I am so happy I won.

RG: Have you ever won anything before?

PS: Nothing that huge. I feel like I won the lottery, honestly. That’s a pretty good chunk of money to have given to you to pay for school.

It’s really helpful. I ended up only having to pay like $50 out of my pocket this semester.

RG: Did you know about the tuition drawing?

PS: I kind of even forgot that I had the opportunity to win the free tuition. I got something in my email from Kish, and I opened it and vaguely remember it being for free tuition for the spring semester. Then a month or so later, I got an email and was kind of surprised to learn that I won. I honestly thought, at first, that it was a joke or something.

LOCAL BRIEF Cortland man accused of failing to register as sex offender

DeKALB – A Cortland man listed as a sexual predator was arrested Sunday for failing to notify police of his location, authorities said.

David M. Matuszewski, 29, of the first block of East South Avenue, Cortland, was arrested at his home Sunday morning on a warrant for violating the sex offender registration act, according to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

Matuszewski pleaded guilty in 2011 to charges of aggravated criminal sexual abuse and aggravated battery – the battery charged was because

he reportedly spat in the face of a DeKalb police officer. He was sentenced to six years in the Illinois Department of Corrections, with credit for the time he already had spent in jail, records show.

David M. DeKalb County Judge Robbin Matuszewski Stuckert ordered him to register as a sex offender for life. In January 2015, Matuszewski was charged with failure to register as an offender when he was living in Maple Park, records show.

He is to appear in bond court Monday.

DeKALB – The city’s trees are hiding a sweet surprise, easily accessible for just a few weeks a year.

“Sap season is just in the spring,” said Nathan Dettman, lead grower at the DeKalb County Community Gardens and member of the Gurler House volunteer board. “It’s when it freezes overnight still, but during the day gets up to around 40 degrees. The best is if it stays sunny and gets up to 40. Those things have to happen, or you’re not going to get flow.”

“We saw the event on Facebook,” he said. “We have walnut trees. I didn’t really come here with the intention on doing it, but maybe next year we will give it a try.”

DeKalb event uses technology to solve real-world problems

DeKALB – A mayor, an entrepreneur and a community college student walk into a room.

This is not a setup to a joke, but the scene of an annual gathering of people who share an interest in “coding” to solve real-world problems such as disease and economic decline. Saturday saw these people come together in DeKalb as part of CodeAcross, an annual “hackathon” promoted by the organization Code for America in which open-source information is used to create solutions to local issues.

Among the projects started at the weekend event at Northern Illinois University’s Founders Memorial Library were a website that can be used to consolidate useful information during

a natural disaster, such as when and where relief volunteers are needed and a resource people can use to find local produce, among other products. Final versions of these resources might be months away, because they are virtually impossible to finish in a weekend, said Christopher Whitaker, founder of CivicWhitaker and Code for America consultant.

“The way I judge … a successful hackathon is six months later, did we have a project that actually became a real thing? Or are the people who were involved in the hackathon still involved and working on even bigger projects?”

Whitaker said. “Even if people don’t produce something that knocks it out of the park, the fact people are learning is what we care about as well.”

Andrew Kozinski, a 16-year-old Kishwaukee College student, helped

develop Illinois Emergency, a website that, when fully functional, will allow officials to coordinate volunteer relief efforts by letting community members know when and where they can volunteer in the event of a natural disaster.

Tracy Rogers-Tryba, research associate at the NIU Center for P-20 Engagement, said improvements in volunteer relief organization could be made in light of last year’s tornado that tore through Rochelle and Fairdale and left two women dead.

“The disorganization had to do with there was a call put out for different resources, [and] you’d show up, [and] ‘We don’t need them, we have too many,’ ” Rogers-Tryba said. “It’s situations like that, so if there is a main point of communication … that kind of organization can really help smooth that relief effort both on picking up and cleaning

up afterwards.”

Patty Ruback, 41, of DeKalb led a brainstorming session on the best way to link producers of locally grown food to consumers, two groups who she said wouldn’t have interacted otherwise.

She and other participants came up with the idea for a website that would serve as a resource for consumers looking for locally grown and made products, with food and drinks being the chief focus.

“I truly believe that we can find everything we eat in this area if we really wanted to,” Ruback said. “As consumers, we need to support those local producers, and together I think that will help build the local economy.”

DeKalb Mayor John Rey, who participated in the event, said he was extremely pleased with the local initiatives.

Fed economist to speak at annual county economic outlook event

DeKALB – Local business and community leaders will hear from a Federal Reserve Bank economist later this month, when the county’s economic development organization holds its annual outlook luncheon.

The event “involves a recap of recent past performance of the economy – national and with local impacts. It primarily, then, provides projections for the coming year regarding economic growth, employment projections, performance of sectors within the economy … projections regarding interest rates and world market trends and their impact on our national and local economy,” said Paul Borek, executive director of the DeKalb County Economic Development Corp.

Bill Strauss, a senior economist for the Fed, will sum up how the 2015 economy affected businesses and some other organizations, as well as offer a forecast of what’s ahead this year.

This will mark his seventh year addressing attendees of the luncheon.

“He’s particularly qualified in our region because he leads the analysis of the Chicago Federal Reserve Bank,

regarding analysis of the Midwest economy, the manufacturing sector and the automotive sector,” Borek said about Strauss. “Our local business and community leaders value Strauss’ explanation of how all the external factors impact the national and local economy. And he really explains it quite clearly.”

At last year’s event, the economist said 2015 would simultaneously see bumps up in employment and a decline in unemployment. DCEDC officials announced that the prediction became a reality, with industrial expansions that took place in DeKalb County last year.

“The projects are important to both business and community leaders.

They value the input of the economist as they define and execute business plans for the coming year,” Borek said.

OBITUARIES JAMES B. BISHOP James B. Bishop, age 81, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, February 27, at home.

He was born in 1935 in Emporia, Kansas to Ralph and Virginia Bishop. After graduating from Emporia High School he went on to the University of Kansas where he earned a Bachelor’s in Political Science. He continued at KU with graduate studies in the Western Civilization Program and served as an Instructor in the program.

In 1963 Jim began graduate work in Political Science at Northern Illinois University where he also served as an Instructor. Jim accepted a position as Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. His areas of concentration were Constitutional Law and American Government.

After teaching, Jim was employed by the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Stastics as a Social Science Analyst/Senior Field Representative covering parts of six states.

He specialized in the Producer Price Index and the Import Price Index. Jim retired after over twenty years with the Bureau, but didn’t stay retired long. After a few months Jim went to work for a longtime friend, Darrell Foss, at his State Farm office. For about five years Jim got to have more fun than any time since he was teaching.

In 1956 Jim married his great love, Dorothy Ann Cresap. They moved to Topeka, Kansas when she was teaching at Washburn University. While in Topeka their son, Douglas, was born. The family moved to DeKalb when Dorothy accepted a position as an Assistant Professor of Speech at NIU. Jim and Dorothy were avid fans of the opera. They were Lyric Opera of Chicago subscribers since 1974.

After retirement they traveled frequently, es-

pecially to the Santa Fe Opera each summer.

After Dorothy’s death in 2010, Jim continued to subscribe to numerous opera and theatre groups in Chicago.

Jim was proceeded in death by his parents, Ralph and Virginia; and his wife, Dorothy.

He is survived by his son and daughter-inlaw, Douglas and Kathy (Kremer) of Pittsburgh, PA; and a granddaughter, Emily Ann, of Leeds, United Kingdom. He also leaves behind a wonderful collection of friends who shared good food, the arts and good company, including Jan Nelson a fellow fine arts aficionado.

There will be no service.

Shirley Ann Harmet was born on October 23, 1936, in Paducah Kentucky. Upon

Graduating from High School, Shirley began her working life, with stops in Wisconsin and Oklahoma before settling in Illinois, initially in DeKalb and later in Sycamore. In 1964, she began a long career at Northern Illinois University as an administrative assistant. She worked for Dr. Robert Brigham at Evans Field House, and later worked for the Chief Counsel’s office, as well as the President’s office in Lowden Hall.

Her husband and fellow NIU employee, Dr. Kenneth Harmet, was the love of her life and preceded her in death.

She is survived by her three sons.

She is survived by her nieces, Sheryl Nakonechny, Jeanne (Andy) Beard, Juli (Terry) Mayer; her nephews, Terry Hannan and Jon (Lauri) Hannan; sisters-in-law, Mary Weishaar, Doris Riippi, Phyllis Riippi, Eileen Martin; brother-in-law, Albert Riippi; nieces, nephews, and many great-nieces and nephews as well as great-great nieces and nephews.

Some object to Sycamore Road development plan

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – Neighbors have raised concerns about a developer’s plan to build retail and commercial buildings on a triangular 2-acre parcel on Sycamore Road between Advance Auto Parts and First National Bank.

Marvin Keys and First Midwest Group, doing business as Corral Dyn LLC, have proposed building a 3,520-square-foot retail space and an 8,015-square-foot multi-tenant commercial building on the vacant property, 2115 Sycamore Road. The developer is asking the city to annex the property, rezone it and grant other approvals needed for the project to move forward.

The site previously was the Nelson veterinary property. The abandoned, dilapidated veterinary office was razed in 2014.

DeKalb’s Planning and Zoning Commission has discussed the plan, but the DeKalb City Council likely will have a second public hearing on the proposed annexation agreement at its March 14 meeting, according to city documents.

ST. LOUIS – Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan’s office is considering legal action against the state’s natural resources agency for what prosecutors call a failure to follow the terms of a court-brokered plan to toughen oversight of coal mines.

The tougher regulations were part of broader reforms touted with much fanfare two years by the administration of former Gov. Pat Quinn. They followed criticisms by environmentalists who alleged the state Department of Natural Resources was too cozy with mining companies and other businesses it regulates.

The rules included a requirement that regulators provide earlier citizen notification of new mine applications and that mine permit applicants be available to answer questions at public hearings. But two years later, the new rules have not been enacted, and the resources agency now wants to package the new rules with other pending chang-

Governors State University trustees OK tuition freeze

UNIVERSITY PARK – Governors State University’s trustees have unanimously approved a tuition freeze for the suburban Chicago campus in the upcoming academic year.

The trustees approved the tuition freeze Friday and renewed their pledge to front funds for the school’s Monetary Award Program.

The university has covered $3 million in MAP funding for more than 1,900 low-income students this academic year amid Illinois’ ongoing budget standoff.

School President Elaine Maimon said the trustees’ decision “should allow our students to enroll and concentrate on their studies without worrying about whether the state will honor its promises to them.”

Three reported dead in northeast Illinois car accident

ROCKFORD – Authorities in northeast Illinois said three people are dead after an early morning vehicle crash.

Winnebago County Sheriff’s spokesman Ken DeCoster told The Rockford Register Star the crash occurred around 2:30 a.m. on Sunday. DeCoster said four people were in the vehicle when it crashed. He said the vehicle left the road, hit a guardrail and bridge abutment and caught fire.

The driver and front seat passenger were trapped in the wreckage. It’s unclear if they died from trauma injuries or the fire. A male passenger was ejected from the vehicle and later died at a hospital.

A fourth man was able to crawl out of the vehicle. DeCoster said he suffered injuries that weren’t believed to be life-threatening.

Illinois lawmakers want funding for safer school routes

SPRINGFIELD – Amid a drawnout fight over the budget, two Republicans are among the state legislators calling attention to plans seeking more funding to improve street safety for students walking to school.

It’s an issue that needs attention despite the state’s messy finances, supporters of the idea said, given that nearly five Illinois children are hit by cars every day within a block of a school, according to the Safe Routes to School program.

To highlight the need, Springfield Republican Reps. Tim Butler and Sara Wojcicki Jimenez walked from the state Capitol to a nearby school in downtown Springfield with about a dozen supporters, including parents, on Wednesday.

Public health office to close over budget problems

MATTOON – A county health department in central Illinois said it will close one of its offices because of the state’s ongoing budget crisis.

The Mattoon Journal-Gazette reported that the Coles County Health Department plans to close its Mattoon office Tuesday.

The department’s main office in Charleston will remain open.

Administrator Diana Stenger said the department is owed

$169,000 by the state.

Missing radioactive container found in Wayne County

SPRINGFIELD – A radioactive container that went missing last fall has been found by a Wayne County farmer and returned to its owner, a company facing nearly $80,000 in fines and search cost reimbursements.

The Illinois Emergency Management Agency said Wayne County Well Surveys Inc. Fairfield reported the device’s recovery Friday.

The radioactive “well logging source holder” contains americium, a highly radioactive metal. It went missing in October 2015.

The discovery came one day after the state agency issued a preliminary order seeking to impose a $25,500 penalty on the southeastern Illinois company.

IEMA also wants the company to pay the nearly $53,000 cost of searching for the device. The search spanned 18 counties in Illinois and Indiana.

The container was last known to be in a company vehicle.

Some in GOP seeing Cruz as the best option to Trump

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Republican leaders Sunday grappled with the prospect that the best hope for stopping Donald Trump’s march to the nomination may be Ted Cruz – the only candidate who causes as much heartburn among party elites as the billionaire businessman, if not sometimes more.

The Texas senator split contests with Trump in Saturday’s voting, bolstering his argument that only he can defeat the real estate mogul.

Trump and Cruz are now significantly outpacing Marco Rubio in the delegate count, further shrinking the Florida senator’s already narrow path to the nomination.

If Rubio’s slide continues, he would be the latest establishment candidate to fall victim to an angry, frustrated electorate that cares little about endorsements from party leaders or newspaper editorial boards. Rubio has rolled out both at warp speed in recent weeks, but his appeal with Republican voters is not keeping pace.

Rubio did pick up a victory Sunday in Puerto Rico’s primary, his second win of the 2016 cycle. Democrats, meanwhile, held caucuses Sunday in Maine. Sanders won that contest, beating rival Hillary Clinton for his eighth win of the 19 contests already held in the nomination process.

The wary interest in Cruz from more mainstream Republicans is the latest unexpected twist in a nominating contest where talk of a contested convention or third-party candidate is becoming commonplace.

“I think a lot of people were surprised by how well Ted Cruz did,” said Romney, who has thrust himself back into the political discussion with a searing takedown of Trump in a speech last week.

Romney has stepped back into the spotlight at a moment of crisis and chaos for the Republican Party. Leaders in Washington who assumed hard-liners such as Cruz represented a minority view have been left wondering if they’re the ones out of step with their party’s base.

For months, Republican elites have lumped Trump and Cruz together, arguing that neither could win in November’s general election.

Cruz is an uncompromising conservative who has publicly criticized party leaders, including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, for what he sees as a pattern of giving in too easily to Presi-

dent Barack Obama.

Cruz particularly angered Senate leaders when he helped orchestrate the 2013 government shutdown, which failed in achieving the senator’s stated goal of defunding Obama’s health care reform law.

But Cruz has built a loyal following among conservatives and evangelical Christians. After winning the leadoff Iowa caucuses, he’s also beaten Trump in five more states, more than any other candidate.

Trump still leads the field with at least 378 delegates, while Cruz has at least 295.

Rubio and Kasich lag far behind in the race to reach the 1,237 delegates needed to clinch the Republican nomination.

Rubio and Kasich desperately need to win in their home states of Florida and Ohio on March 15 to have any credible case for staying in the race.

Trump’s lead has sparked a flurry of discussions among Republicans about complicated long-shot options to stop him. Rival campaigns are exploring ways to prevent Trump from getting the delegates he needs to win the nomination outright, then defeat him at the convention in July.

In Iran, hope but no change If you are a Washington foreign policy analyst who supported the nuclear deal with Iran, then the result of the country’s elections last week was a resounding victory for reformists that proves the wisdom of President Obama’s engagement with the Islamic republic.

If you opposed the deal, then the election merely entrenched conservatives and hard-liners. Such is the opacity of Iranian politics that neither of those dueling narratives could be entirely discounted following the release of the election results this week.

What seems relatively clear is that the voting for parliament, and for the Assembly of Experts that will choose the next Iranian supreme leader, showed, like most Iranian elections, that a large part of the public supports a liberalization of the regime. But as in the past, that popular sentiment is unlikely to bring about substantial change in the near future – in part because many of those elected are far less reform-minded than those who voted for them.

The basis for optimism lies in the relative success of a “list of hope” linked to President Hassan Rouhani, who led the regime to the nuclear deal. Those moderate candidates captured at least 85 seats in the 290-member Majlis, according to tallies by the Associated Press and Reuters, and all 30 of those contested in Tehran.

More conservatives won election overall, but hard-liners linked to the faction of Holocaust-denying former president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad lost seats. Meanwhile, a Rouhani coalition attracted considerable support in the vote for the Assembly of Experts, including 15 of Tehran’s 16 places. That body will make the critical choice of a successor to hard-line Ayatol-

lah Ali Khamenei, who wields ultimate power in the Iranian system.

Claims of a reformist triumph, however, are overblown. Before the elections, an Iranian liberal coalition said that 99 percent of 3,000 pro-reform candidates had been disqualified by a hardline clerical council.

Most of those in Rouhani’s coalition are, like him, moderate conservatives, meaning they favor economic reforms and greater Western investment, but not liberalization of the political system or a moderation of Iran’s aspiration to become the hegemon of the Middle East.

True Iranian religious and political reformers, like those who joined the 2009 Green Movement, are in jail or exile, or were banned from the ballot.

At best, the elections will allow Rouhani to press ahead with his economic agenda: He is intent on improving the economy before the next presidential election, in 2017.

More foreign investment and higher living standards for Iranians could, over time, increase pressure for moderation of the regime’s domestic and foreign policies; that, anyway, is the theory embraced

by Obama.

For now, Iran can be expected to continue the course it has been pursuing in the months since the nuclear deal was struck: waging proxy wars against the United States and its allies around the Middle East, using its unfrozen reserves to buy weapons, and defying non-nuclear limits – such as by testing long-range missiles.

The elections won’t make the regime more pliable, and they won’t change the need for a U.S. counter to its aggressions. They shouldn’t provide an excuse for the Obama administration to tolerate Tehran’s provocations.

If the nation survives this crazy season – and I still don’t believe we will swear in a President Trump next January – perhaps our leaders will learn an important lesson: This democracy is a delicate matter, a fragile proposition, and it must be nurtured and protected.

Unaware of what that was, she called out in a loud voice for all to hear, from the front of the store to the pharmacist in the back, “Do we sell prophylactics?”

The young man made a hasty exit without waiting for an answer or the item he was seeking.

To the Editor: Waiting in the car as my daughter shopped, I people-watched in the store’s parking lot.

Vending machines, lined up outside the store, were doing a brisk business as people picked up and deposited rental movies. Ice machines were not getting much play in the frigid temperatures.

I was pleased to see that containers provided for depositing litter were being used by the patrons. The parking lot was relatively free of litter, a testament to their diligence or could also be the result of the strong winds we were experiencing that blew away any carelessly tossed

As a young girl, I remember shopping and praying that a female clerk would wait on me.

Donald Trump may well be the most polarizing figure to come along in American politics for several generations. Still, he has managed to unite David Duke and Louis Farrakhan, men whose cultural and political profiles suggest they’d find it hard to agree on anything.

Duke is a former Ku Klux Klan leader who served in the Louisiana House of Representatives before losing several races for higher office.

A white nationalist, Duke has traded not only in a frank and forthright bigotry against black people but also in anti-Semitism.

Farrakhan is the leader of the Nation of Islam, a cultish religious organization that claims roots in Islam but is more closely connected to black nationalism. He, too, has a long history of anti-Semitism, as well as reckless and unhinged attacks on white people in general.

Whatever their serious and searing disagreements, both men are attracted to Trump’s presidential candidacy.

You probably know by now that Duke has spoken fondly of Trump, telling his presumably white radio audience recently that voting for anyone else is “really treason to your heritage.”

Farrakhan, for his part, has stopped short of an outright endorse-

Hein takes long awaited championship

ecarifio@shawmedia.com DeKALB – After seeing Max St. George set a state record in the 100-yard backstroke in the 2015 State Swimming Championships, DeKalb-Sycamore swimmer Daniel Hein knew what he wanted for the 2016 season – not just a state championship, but the record.

His entire senior season was building to that moment, which he accomplished along with a second-place finish in the 100 butterfly to cap his career and earn the 2015-16 Daily Chronicle Boys Swimmer of the Year award.

“I’ve been looking at a state title since I was a freshman,” Hein said.

“It’s awesome to finally get it. It’s unbelievable and something that I’ve dreamed of for awhile.”

Hein bested the time of St. George

– now a freshman on the Duke swim team – with a 47.97 in the preliminary of the state meet, shaving a tenth of a second off of the old record. Hein clocked a 48.37 in the final to win by

This has been an historical season for the Huskies, winning 20 games for just the fourth time, and they will need to add some more landmarks to the year if they want to make the NCAA tournament. In 20 appearances in the MAC tournament, the Huskies only have won it once – in the 1981-82 season.

The Huskies split the season series with Western Michigan, beating the Broncos 76-67 in DeKalb and losing 8369 in Kalamazoo, the latter of which was marred with Baker, freshman Marshawn Wilson, sophomore post Andrew Zelis and sophomore Jordan Thomas getting ejected early in the game following a scuffle after a flagrant-2 foul by Baker.

The Broncos have a pair of high-profile scorers in sophomore Thomas Wilder (conference-best 20.4 points per game in MAC play) and junior Tucker Haymond (14.4).

“Western has guys that can score the basketball with Tucker and the Wilder kid,” Montgomery said. “You throw the records out. Anybody in this league can beat anybody. It’s do or die. It’s different pressure. It’s March madness.”

The availability of the Huskies’ leading scorer during conference play is still up in the air, with sophomore big Marin Maric nursing an ankle injury that caused him to miss the regular season finale against Ball State. Montgomery said on Friday that Maric was still unable to put pressure on the foot, but that he was “60 percent.”

“If Marin thinks he can play, he’ll play,” Montgomery said. “If not, we’ll figure it out on Monday and then we know we’ll have Marin for sure on Thursday.”

DeKALB – More than likely, there is only one road to the NCAA tournament for the Northern Illinois men’s basketball team.

The Huskies are going to have to win four straight at the Mid-American Conference Tournament.

That path for the No. 7 seed Huskies begins against No. 10 Western Michigan at 7 p.m. Monday at the NIU Convocation Center in the first round of the conference tournament.

“You have to take it up a notch,” Northern Illinois senior guard Travon Baker said. “You can’t have the same mindset that it’s a normal game. It’s a have-to-win situation. If you lose, then you’re done.”

While the men host their first-round contest, the Northern Illinois women will play at Western Michigan, which beat the Huskies 64-60 in the regular season finale on Saturday, on Monday night in Kalamazoo.

“I think you’re going to see a close game, it’s still going to come down to which kids make plays,” Northern Illinois coach Lisa Carlsen said. “ The women (11-18 overall, 4-14 in MAC West) will need to win the MAC tournament to get into the NCAA tournament, and even with the men having its best season in two decades (20-11 overall, 9-9 in MAC West), coach Mark Montgomery acknowledged that they probably won’t make an at-large bid for the NCAA tournament.

“I think every coach in the MAC feels that way,” Montgomery said earlier this season. “History says it – the last, I don’t know, 8-10 years we’ve been getting one in. We have a lot of parity.

It’s tough to get two in when you know the committee wants the Big Five or the Power Five, whatever they call themselves.”

The last time the conference got two teams into the NCAA tournament when Miami (Ohio) – led by Wally Szczerbiak – got an at-large bid in 1999. Last season Central Michigan won the MAC in the regular season and finished 23-8 – not good enough to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament because Buffalo won the conference tournament.

It’s been another dog-eat-dog season in the MAC, with the Huskies losing at No. 11 seed Miami 72-59, but also saw them beat the top two seeds in games against Akron and Ohio – both in DeKalb.

For the Northern Illinois women, it will be the second meeting against Western Michigan in three days when they face off in the first round of the MAC tournament. Earlier in the season, the Huskies defeated the Broncos 80-70 in Kalamazoo on Feb. 24 behind a 41-point performance by junior guard Ally Lehman.

While the men have a chance at postseason play after the MAC tournament, the Northern Illinois women are likely one loss away from having the season come to an end.

“It just gets more real because you know it’s one-and-done,” said sophomore post Kelly Smith, who had 16 points in the loss on Saturday. “You don’t have a chance after a loss to turn it around. ... I think collectively, everybody gets really focused.”

Hawks’ power play NHL’s best

Consistent, red-hot unit powers Hawks in important win

mlazerus@suntimes.com CHICAGO – It’s not as if the Blackhawks need a functioning power play to win the Stanley Cup. They won with the 20th-ranked unit in the league last season. And they won with the 19thranked unit in 2013.

But for the first time in some time, the Hawks’ power play is good. Consistent, too. And right now, red hot. And it’s sure making life easier.

The Hawks got two power-play goals – moving them to No. 1 in the league with the man advantage – to knock off the Detroit Red Wings for the second time in less than a week Sunday, 4-1.

A penalty-killing unit that fended off three straight Detroit power plays in the second and third periods – because in part to another stellar, 33-save effort from Corey Crawford – made it a special kind of victory. An important one, too, because it allowed the Hawks to remain tied for first place with the Dallas Stars.

“When those are doing well, we have a good chance of winning the game,” Crawford said.

Duncan Keith and Artem Anisimov both scored on the power play, and the Hawks are a scorching 14 of 28 in their past nine games. Jonathan Toews couldn’t remember the power play ever being hotter than this, certainly not in recent seasons.

“It comes with confidence,” Toews said. “I think when you have a stretch where pucks are going in, it just adds to the rest of your power play – what you do with the puck, your breakouts, your entries, retrieving pucks off of initial shots that maybe don’t go in. It just trickles down when you’re scoring goals and you’re getting bounces.

It just snowballs, and it’s obviously going the right way for us.”

A big key has been the net-front presence of players such as Anisimov, Andrew Shaw and now Andrew Ladd.

Anisimov, in particular, has been a catalyst all season for the Hawks’ power surge, facilitating everything for his flashier linemates, Patrick Kane and Artemi Panarin.

“His skill is underrated, given the fact that mostly all eyes are on [Kane and Panarin] when they’re out there, 5-on-5 or on the power play,” Toews said. “But he’s the one retrieving pucks, winning draws and just getting the puck to those guys with time and space.”

The Hawks raced out to a 2-0 lead early, as Kane set a new career high in points (89) by scoring only 21 seconds into the game. Six minutes later, the Hawks led 2-0 on Keith’s power-play goal, and Red Wings goalie Petr Mrazek’s night already was done.

But Gustav Nyquist righted the Detroit ship by taking advantage of a stickless Trevor van Riemsdyk and roofing a shot past Crawford just two minutes later. And Detroit dominated play from there, taking 12 of the first 13 shots of the second period.

But the Hawks’ PK fended off the Wings, and the power play put the game away, as Anisimov redirected a Panarin shot past Jimmy Howard to

make it 3-1 at 11:15 of the third. Just 68 seconds later, Andrew Desjardins’ shot ticked in off of Toews to make it 4-1.

Despite their gaudy record, the Hawks still have plenty of areas on which to improve. The penalty kill has been spotty all season, but should benefit from the pending returns of Marian Hossa (likely Wednesday in St. Louis) and Marcus Kruger (before the end of the regular season). They still are working in new players and figuring out line combinations. But as long as the power play keeps clicking – as it has all season in a welcome change of pace – it can go a long way toward making a long run.

“It’s going to be an experience to go out to Omaha to compete with some of the big name swimmers – Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte, all those guys,” Hein said. “It’ll be good to compete against them and other swimmers from around the country.

Obviously, the chances of me making it are pretty slim, but it’s going to be a great experience I can build off of when training in the future.”

After that he’ll head to Missouri to compete for the Tigers swim team.

“Out of all the colleges I looked at – I looked at some great colleges – it was a very difficult decision for me,” Hein said. “But what I noticed at Mizzou, if I were to go there, it would be extremely hard for me to fail. I

mean, I knew I could succeed anywhere I went just with the swimmers, coaches and academics at the schools I was looking at. But the thing I had to look at was could I fail? At Mizzou, they have so much athlete support there. I get free tutoring, there’s a food court specifically for athletes, so that’s really cool. I have all the tools there to help me succeed and that’s what I saw the best at Mizzou.”

of his offense. There’s a happy medium somewhere in there, and Hoiberg wants Butler to find it.

“Added a couple new wrinkles and really tried getting some of the things that we were successful with Jimmy at earlier in the year,” Hoiberg said of the Sunday practice. “Different isolation-type actions using Jimmy in the ball screen, not only as a handler, but as a screener, and just got back to that.

“We went over some of those actions the last two days. And also clean some of that up [Sunday]. So it’s just a matter of cleaning that up and going out there and doing it in the game situation, as opposed to the practice floor where you’re going through your offense at maybe 80 percent. Not only doing it on the floor, but doing it when you’re fatigued. That’s where we need to get better.”

Having their best player back in Butler is a great start.

CHICAGO – Although Derrick Rose has been vastly improved since the start of January, what he’s been doing over that span isn’t unique.

The Bulls will take it, there’s no questioning that. To have a point guard playing at a high level? Any NBA team will take that. But a lot of NBA teams have that.

What Jimmy Butler does for this team goes into an entirely different category, and his skillset on both ends of the floor puts him into a small class of elite NBA players.

“Sure, a big, physical wing that can defend anybody in this league,” coach Fred Hoiberg said, when asked about the difference of missing a player of Butler’s caliber. “Obviously, we missed that as much as anything. Jimmy’s absence, when he was out for that month, it was hard to find a way to de-

fend those big, strong wings.

“You saw it [Saturday] night: When Jimmy got in foul trouble, we struggled, and we threw a couple different coverages out there to try to make up for that as far as double-teams. That puts you in scramble situations. You don’t have to do that as much when Jimmy is on the floor.”

Don’t believe the rookie coach?

As Pau Gasol said Jimmy Butler last week, this team is what the record says it is. With Rose sitting out this season, the record says this team is 6-4. In the 11 games without Butler, the Bulls were a 3-8 team.

Further evidence was offered up in the 108-100 win over the Houston Rockets. Forget Butler scoring 24 points and grabbing 11 rebounds in his return after almost a month. Butler held James

Help children fall asleep easily Note to readers: This column is an update of one that first ran in January 2013.

Dear Dr. K: My 6-year-old son just can’t seem to fall asleep at night. He doesn’t fuss – he just doesn’t get enough sleep. Is there anything I can do?

Dear Reader: Kids can have many different kinds of sleep problems. Like your son, they can have trouble falling asleep.

Other kids may fall asleep promptly, but awaken repeatedly. Others may snore or have breathing problems during sleep. Still others may have abnormal movements during sleep.

Fortunately, your son’s problem is one of the easier of these sleep problems to fix. The pediatricians at Harvard Medical School who specialize in sleep problems tell me that correcting a handful of things can cure the problem in most kids: • Stop your son’s caffeine intake at least eight hours before bedtime. Not a lot of 8-year-olds drink coffee or tea, but there’s plenty of caffeine in cola beverages or in chocolate, for example.

• Reduce your son’s exposure to bright light starting two hours before bedtime.

Dimmer light helps the brain prepare for sleep.

• Keep your son’s bedroom dark, quiet and at a comfortable temperature.

• If your son still uses a night-light, choose one with a low-intensity bulb.

• Reduce the intensity of your son’s reading lamp to 40 watts or less.

• Some parents play classical music in the background, hoping it will lull a child to sleep. Bad idea. Music – particularly great music – is not “white noise.”

The ingenious melodies and rhythms are compelling; your son will be (pleasantly) distracted by them. Even generally soft music can have sudden loud moments.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff And if you play it, but let it stop when the piece ends, your son may notice the sudden absence of music and have trouble falling back to sleep without it.

• Remove video games, media players, cellphones, computers and TVs from your son’s bedroom. Pretty obvious advice, I know, but you’d be surprised how often it’s not followed.

• Position your son’s alarm clock so it faces away from the bed. This can be helpful if your son stresses out each time he sees that five more minutes have passed and he’s still awake.

• Keep pets out of your son’s bedroom (and out of his bed).

• Insist your son do his homework at a desk (or better yet, outside the bedroom), not in bed. When homework is done in bed, the associated stress doesn’t go away just because the books are closed.

Really, it’s the same advice I give adults with problems sleeping: Use the bed for sleeping, not for reading, watching TV or playing games. (If you regularly do these things in bed and think they help you fall asleep – and you don’t have trouble sleeping – please ignore my advice.)

DEAR ABBY My husband of 12 years and I Jeanne have few comPhillips mon interests.

I am earthy, nature-loving, people-loving and crave a rural lifestyle. He’s an introvert, loves everything Western, enjoys his downtime and watches a lot of TV. He dislikes animals and is a sports fanatic. I don’t criticize his interests. I allow him his hobbies. My problem is, our dreams of the future can’t be combined. My off-the-grid homestead and his 70-inch TV don’t exactly fit.

It’s depressing we don’t appreciate each other’s interests, and doing all of our hobbies separately is lonely. How can I experience my dreams when they are not my husband’s dreams? – Hippie Jane In Provo, Utah Dear Hippie Jane: Try doing that by remembering what you had in common with your husband 13 years ago. Is the core of your relationship still a good one? Couples don’t have to be joined at the hip 24/7. Can’t each of you enjoy your hobbies and interests separately?

Many couples do. However, if the answer is you have grown increasingly apart in the past 12 years, the only way you can each experience your dreams may be to do it alone or with other like-minded people.

Dear Abby: I am deathly afraid of snakes.

My daughter, who lives in Canada, recently informed me they had acquired one through a teacher at my grandsons’ school. Of course, the three boys are thrilled. My problem is, we are going to visit my daughter and her family in a few weeks. I am terrified to the point of losing sleep and crying just thinking about it. What should I do? I want to see my family, but there is no house big enough for me and a snake. Please help. – Terrified In Cypress, Texas Dear Terrified: If you were planning to stay at your daughter’s, scale back your plans and reserve a room at a nearby hotel or motel. This will give you eight or 10 hours a day nowhere near the reptile. If your daughter is unaware of your phobia, put her on notice the snake is to be confined to its cage in a room with a firmly closed door while you are in the house – and further, you do not wish to make its acquaintance.

Dear Abby: We took my wealthy daughter, husband and their four children to dinner at a very nice restaurant. We insisted on paying so they could each have an expensive dish they only picked at. When it was over and it was obvious they weren’t taking home any leftovers, I started to motion to our waitress to ask for take-home boxes so my wife and I could take all of their uneaten food. My wife shot me the “don’t you dare!” look, so all of it wound up in a dumpster. Needless to say, it became an issue.

Was I wrong to want to take home their uneaten meals? – Peeved In Pennsylvania Dear Peeved: Not as far as I’m concerned. Because your daughter and her family didn’t like what they ordered – and you were footing the bill – there was no breach of etiquette in asking for a box for the leftovers.
