DNA test has surprising result I took a DNA test recently.

No, it’s not the kind meant to determine if I’m the father or a perpetrator. It’s the kind where you send in a sample and they tell you where your ancestors lived.

It’s always been something of a murky topic in my family because there were a couple of adoptions along the way.

For the most part, my lineage reflects about what you’d expect from a descendant of 19th century immigrants – Western Europe, Scandinavia, Eastern Europe are the three key ingredients. There are a few other lines of European ancestry in there in trace amounts – the Iberian peninsula, Italy and Greece, Great Britain.

Then there’s 2 percent of my DNA that is from Southeast Asia, the area that includes India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Mount Everest, among others.

Naturally, that’s the part I’m most interested in. Was it seafaring Scandinavians? A longago encounter between a Bohemian gypsy and a stranger from a far-away land? An intrepid explorer who made her way to Europe? A

I’ll never know for sure because it must have occurred a long, long time ago. But unless the lab got it wrong, it happened somewhere, somehow.

I guess it further shows that all of us here on Earth are more alike than we know.

It’s also kind of amazing to think that in all the millennia of people coming together to make more people, natives of the frozen north combined with people all over Europe and even just a dash from the sweltering subcontinent to make one local newspaper editor.

The Sycamore School District 427 Board will host a public hearing at its meeting Tuesday, opening the floor for public comment about the 56 proposed layoffs district wide.

The meeting will be at 7 p.m. at Sycamore Middle School, 150 Maplewood Drive, Sycamore.

The board will vote on whether to move forward with the cutbacks.

The board also is expected to vote on authorizing up to $5,000,000 in tax anticipation warrants, a form of short-term borrowing. “Tax anticipation warrants are issued against taxes levied but not yet collected,” according to the Illinois Association of School Boards.

Recruitment has cost Northern Illinois University almost $1M

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Northern Illinois University has spent almost $1 million in the past five years to hire search firms to help fill a handful of executive-level positions, records show, at a time when other workers complain of not receiving raises and student tuition and fees increased.

It cost NIU almost $127,000 to eventually find Doug Baker, who became the state university’s 12th president in July 2013. The tab included a $90,000 “professional fee” paid to Atlanta-based Parker Executive Search firm in the recruitment effort. Baker came to NIU from the University of Idaho and is paid a base salary of $450,000, according to NIU financial documents obtained by the Daily Chronicle.

“A lot depends on the positions [to be filled]. We typically don’t do national searches, except for the more-senior positions,” said Al Phillips, NIU vice president for administration and finance. “But when you’re looking for someone with a somewhat technical skill, or a dean that brings certain things to the university, it’s very difficult to conduct a local search and find the person that you really want for the job.”

Although some question whether the search expenses are necessary during times of remarkable budget uncertainty, university officials say the school has no choice but to hire contractors to do its recruiting because it lacks the resources to do the job itself.

However, turnover at the top can be an expensive issue, records show.

Phillips himself started at NIU in March 2015 after the university paid Parker more than $97,000 to find candidates to fill the position he currently holds. He is one of 12 members of Baker’s cabinet.

NIU also used Parker to search for several of the other cabinet members.

The university cut checks totaling almost $270,000 to the search firm to bring aboard such employees as Jerry Blakemore, vice president and general counsel, and athletic director Sean Frazier.

The firm still is on the hunt for a director of admissions for the university, and it already has been paid $62,204 for that search.

“That’s typically what those searches cost. We try to keep those costs as low as we can,” Phillips said. “It’s not like we’re giving them all the money

NIU previously hired two admissions directors who were found by The Spelman and Johnson Group (SJG), based in Easthampton, Massachusetts.

But Brandon Laguna, hired November 2009 at a $98,000 base salary, left the post in September 2011. Then Kimberley Williams got the job, and was paid $106,000, according to NIU records, but left two weeks shy of being in the position for a year.

Bond reduction denied for day KishHealth System Foundation care provider accused of abuse to host Formal Affair at NIU

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A DeKalb County judge Monday said she needed information from the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services before reducing bond for a woman accused of battering a 6-month-old boy in her care.

Bond will remain at $500,000 for Katie L. Petrie, 33, of the 100 block of West Amber Avenue, Cortland. In the meantime, DeKalb County Presiding Judge Robbin Stuckert wants to hear from DCFS whether Petrie can safely return to her home, where her three children live.

Petrie is charged with two forms of aggravated battery to a child, the most serious of which is punishable by six to 30 years in prison. She must post $50,000 bail to be released from jail, where she has been since January.

Police responded Dec. 15 to Petrie’s 911 call reporting a 6-month-old boy was having a seizure at her home. The boy was under Petrie’s supervision at her home day care at the time.

The child was taken to Kishwaukee Hospital and later flown to Rockford Memorial Hospital, where he was treated for critical injuries, DeKalb County

Sheriff Roger Scott said. Police believe the seizure was triggered by head trauma caused by violent shaking, DeKalb County Assistant State’s Attorney Stephanie Klein said.

The boy was released from the hospital Feb. 5 with “significant medical issues” that will affect him the rest of his life, Klein said. The extent of the child’s injuries is unknown because he still is recovering, authorities said.

Katie Petrie Medical records suggest the infant’s injuries could have been sustained as early as the night before the reported abuse, Petrie’s attorney, Peter Buh, said in court Monday. He added that the child’s father told an emergency room nurse his son wasn’t acting like himself the night before the reported abuse.

The boy’s family declined to comment.

Although Petrie has no prior convictions, she has been the subject of two previous DCFS investigations, Klein said.

Petrie is to appear before a judge again Feb. 29, when Stuckert hopes to hear a report of DCFS’ findings and whether living at home would put her own children at risk.

Cancer Center and Hospice patients receive care that includes many ancillary services of the

health system, including nutrition services, massage and physical therapy, and pain management. The continued support of the community also provides needed funds for subsidized care, new equipment, facility expansions and wellness education throughout KishHealth System, the release said.

Spelman and Johnson made about $140,000 helping NIU to find Rebecca Babel, the current director of financial aid, and another cabinet member, Eric Weldy. He serves as vice president for student affairs and enrollment management. Combined, their base salary tops $300,000.

When SJG was recruiting for the job Weldy went on to land, the search firm billed the university $11,937 to

hold interviews at an airport – plus the airfare for four candidates flown to the airport for the meeting.

Ted Dabrowski, of the Illinois Policy Institute, a nonpartisan conservative research group, said that using search firms often is a way to go for many organizations such as NIU looking to fill high-level positions.

“The bigger issue is that the university may be spending money that it should actually be using to help bring tuitions down,” Dabrowski said. “If universities are really struggling with their expenses, they need to look at every single expense. And one of those, of course, is if they’re spending

lots of money on recruitment alone.”

Despite the money NIU has spent on searches for some staff, other positions that it would retain a firm to help fill are being staffed now by interim leaders. Baker cites the school’s current fiscal challenges – because of the state budget impasse and expectations of losing state aid when the state does adopt a spending plan – as reasons for not pursing permanent replacements.

At the NIU Board of Trustees’ December 2015 meeting, Trustee Cherilyn Murer cautioned that NIU should slow down on its reliance on search firms. She noted that the university’s

proximity to Chicago should be helpful in the recruitment process.

“I really encourage us, to the best of our ability, to lessen our dependency on outside search firms,” Murer said.

“We’re a large university. We have a lot of skills, a lot of capabilities.”

Phillips told the Daily Chronicle that it isn’t cheaper for the university to search for candidates on its own.

The search firms’ expenses include creating ads and announcements for the positions, placing the ads in various job boards and listings, and prescreening applicants, among other efforts. Phillips said NIU doesn’t have resources to do all that.

Shop owner Ariel Ries decided to expand the focus of the ninth annual Skateboard Inspired Art Show to include custom-made skateboard decks designed by artists at Proton Tattoo.

“It’s always been skateboard themed. This year I kind of wanted to celebrate how the tattoo culture is very intertwined in skateboarding,” Ries said.

“So I reached out to Proton Studio and their artists and they are designing seven boards, and those boards are going to be on raffle on the night of the art show.”

Proton tattoo artist Aaron Wassner spread the word to Andy Sivwright, a friend who practices custom car painting, and encouraged him to design a board, too.

process of addressing these issues as we move forward with a new strategic plan.

Hotel sales tax is how CVB offices are funded so filling them has to be one of our main priorities. The DCCVB has a consistent track record of growing the dollars that are generated from visitor spending. We have increased that dollar amount for six consecutive years. To continue to be successful, we need every community to invest as stakeholders.

Many of our communities that don’t have hotels have great attractions and events that we promote on a daily basis.

For every $1 invested the return is estimated to be $7. The money that visitor spending and tourism generates saves the average Illinois household about $1,300 in taxes each year.

Veldhuizen, a certified therapeutic recreation specialist and Sycamore resident, received her recreation therapy degree from the University of St. Stacy Veldhuizen Francis.

She was the Camp Maple Leaf assistant director in 2014, and a program leader for the general programs at KSRA. Veldhuizen’s duties will include being the permanent Camp Maple Leaf director, the program coordinator for all of the programs, and the educator and contact for inclusion services.

Jeff McMaster is one of two Deputy Fire Chiefs on the DeKalb Fire Department. Among other administrative duties, his primary responsibly focuses on training, health and safety, and policies and procedures for the department. Washington would lament today’s divisions Political discord continues to rear its ugly head.

We see it nationally, with the gridlocked government headed by Republicans in Congress and a Democratic president in the White House.

We see it in Illinois, with the gridlocked government headed by Democrats in the General Assembly and a Republican governor in the Executive Mansion.

The death of Justice Antonin Scalia brought a new round of political bickering between Democrats, who support President Obama’s decision to nominate a replacement, and Republicans, who say the decision should be left to the new president elected in November.

Are political parties worth all this trouble?

The Father of His Country didn’t think so.

284 years ago Monday, had impeccable qualifications for making that judgment.

After all, his generalship led the Continental Army to victory in the Revolutionary War. He then presided over the 1787 Constitutional Convention and served two terms as our first president under that Constitution.

Washington, in his Farewell Address in 1796, minced no words when it came to political parties, which he referred to as “the spirit of party.”

“This spirit, unfortunately, is inseparable from our nature,” Washington wrote, but noted that in popular, elected governments, “it is seen in its greatest rankness, and is truly their worst enemy.”

Washington said that “the alternate domination of one faction over another, sharpened by the spirit of revenge, natural to party dissension, … is itself

a frightful despotism,” as it could lead the public, tired of “the disorders and miseries,” to “seek security and repose in the absolute power of an individual,” such as a dictator.

Further, the spirit of party “serves always to distract the Public Councils, and enfeeble the Public Administration.”

Further, “It agitates the Community with ill-founded jealousies and false alarms; kindles the animosity of one part against another, foments occasionally riot and insurrection.”

Washington wrote that “in Governments purely elective, it is a spirit not to be encouraged.”

Summoning a vivid analogy, Washington wrote, “A fire not to be quenched, it [the spirit of party] demands a uniform vigilance to prevent its bursting into a flame, lest, instead of warming, it should consume.”

Pretty strong words from the Father of His Country, who saw political parties as potentially “potent engines, by which cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled men will be enabled to subvert the power of the people, and to usurp for themselves the reins of government.”

Washington gave this advice to the public about political parties: “The common and continual mischiefs of the spirit of party are sufficient to make it the interest and duty of a wise people to discourage and restrain it.”

Well, Americans didn’t listen to their Father. Political parties and the discord they bring have long been infused in national and state government.

If Washington could see today’s “distracted” Congress and Legislature and “enfeebled” executive branches, he would sorrowfully shake his head and mutter: I told you so.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Don’t let governor burn Illinois’ house down

To the Editor: Regarding the budget impasse in Springfield: Asking the legislature to break the unions, as Gov. Bruce Rauner is demanding while holding the state budget hostage, is akin to asking someone: “Can I burn your house down?”

No. “Well, how about just the second floor?”

No. “The garage?”

No. “OK, let’s talk about what I can burn down.”

No. “I see. Here I have several times reduced the effect of my request, and all you can say is no. Clearly, you are unwilling to compromise.”

This scenario is a slight modification of a post on the Internet. Thus, it is not original with me, but it seems very appropriate.

February clarifies both parties’ nomination races In 2008, Barack Obama’s great victories in February primaries – Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Virginia and Wisconsin – gave him an unstoppable delegate lead for the Democratic nomination. In 2012, Mitt Romney’s wins in Florida (technically on Jan. 31) and Michigan sent him on his way to the Republican nomination.

This year, with the foreshortened schedule, there are a couple of February contests to go. But Saturday’s Republican primary in South Carolina and the Democratic caucuses in Nevada make it plain what this cycle will look like, even if it’s not entirely clear who the winners will be.

Let’s start with the Democrats.

Hillary Clinton prevailed over Bernie Sanders, 53 percent to 47 percent, in Nevada. This was identical to her percent share of the vote there against Obama in 2008.

As in Iowa and by a wide margin in New Hampshire, Clinton lost among white voters. According to an entrance poll, she won because 76 percent of black voters backed her.

That’s a lower percent than Obama carried in 2008 primaries, but it’s more than she’s gotten in some polls. It guarantees her victory in South Carolina this coming Saturday and many more wins on March 1 in Southern states with half-black electorates.

The internals are not quite a mirror of 2008. Some 80 percent of young

VIEWS Michael Barone voters are against her, and Latinos may have voted Sanders (although the entrance poll may be wrong on this). But Clinton runs better now among high-income Democrats (they don’t like 77 percent tax rates) and post-graduates (probably thanks to her teacher union endorsement).

The upshot is the same: another long, hard slog to the nomination, but with a Clinton victory. And this time, mirthless: Democratic turnout was down from 2008 in Iowa and New Hampshire; and Nevada super-analyst Jon Ralston said it sagged from 120,000 to 80,000 there.

All this is assuming the FBI doesn’t weigh in.

Republican turnout was up 22 percent from 2012 in South Carolina; likewise, it was up in Iowa (54 percent) and New Hampshire (14 percent). Donald Trump has established that there is a high floor on his support – one-quarter in Iowa and one-third in New Hampshire and South Carolina. That’s enough to give him victories in many-candidate contests.

But Trump also may have a relatively low ceiling. So his chances for the nomination are significantly

below 100 percent. This will be tested in the Southern contests on Super Tuesday (March 1), the Michigan primary (March 8) and the winnertake-all (or winner-take-nearly-all) primaries in Florida, Ohio and Illinois on March 15.

Marco Rubio rebounded from a poor New Hampshire finish to take second place in South Carolina.

He clearly is the best-positioned challenger. He stands to inherit most of Jeb Bush’s supporters, and he is widely acceptable to almost all segments of the Republican electorate.

Evangelical Christians accounted for 72 percent of South Carolina Republican voters. Among them, Trump got 33 percent. Only 27 percent of the evangelical vote went to Ted Cruz, who has pitched his well-organized campaign specifically to evangelicals. That’s not a good sign for Cruz in the March 1 Southern states. And Cruz got only 13 percent among non-evangelicals, who will be a much larger proportion of primary voters after March 1.

Delegate math hurts Cruz as well. He certainly can win some delegates in proportional-representation Southern states. But he will have rough going in winner-take-all Northern states and Florida.

Rubio beat Trump among college graduates and ran a strong second among voters under 45, those with high incomes and those calling

themselves “somewhat conservative” or “moderate.” Also, he got a solid 22 percent among evangelicals, only five points behind Cruz. If he can pick up Bush votes and sideline John Kasich, he has the potential to break through Trump’s floor and perhaps surpass whatever turns out to be Trump’s ceiling.

Endorsements by Rep. Trey Gowdy, Sen. Tim Scott and Gov. Nikki Haley – a rainbow team – surely helped Rubio in South Carolina, and others will come his way. Nevada Sen. Dean Heller chimed in Sunday, two days before his state’s Republican caucuses. Trump is right that Rubio won’t inherit all the dropouts’ support. But it looks like a three-way Trump-Rubio-Cruz race right now, with Cruz the most at risk of dropping by the wayside.

So far, only 1.2 million Republicans and 500,000 Democrats have voted in a nation of 323 million. But the shape – if not the results – of both parties’ nomination races have been vividly clarified.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Denny Hamlin burst onto the scene a decade ago when he showed up at Daytona International Speedway as a rookie and won the first exhibition race of Speedweeks.

Hamlin beat Dale Earnhardt Jr., Tony Stewart, Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon that night, and a story the next day from a newspaper in a city with deep racing roots opened with “Denny Who Did What?”

It was quite the arrival for a cherub-faced short-track racer from Virginia who had clawed his way into a ride with Joe Gibbs Racing. Hamlin had dreamed of becoming a NASCAR star his entire childhood, and he cheered hero Bill Elliott twice a year from the grandstands at Richmond International Raceway.

Racing was all he wanted to do, and if it didn’t work out, he might have made a career as a welder.

His success was immediate, two wins and a spot in the Chase as a rookie. He finished third in the overall standings and seemed to be on the fast track toward a Sprint Cup title.

the ringleader of a group text chain of drivers who were disgruntled with the on-track product and the direction NASCAR wanted to take with the rules package.

The group text still exists, but also graduated into a formal council of elected drivers who meet with NASCAR to discuss various issues. Hamlin followed the recent deal that created charters for the owners, and pored over the agreement to see if the drivers were being slighted. Although no one would credit him as the leader of the garage, his behind-the-scenes efforts to unify the drivers into one collective voice has paid dividends for all the competitors.

No longer that chubby kid who stunned the field in his debut Daytona race, Hamlin is a 35-year-old father and the most-tenured driver in JGR’s four-car stable. His sponsorship deal with FedEx, that dates to his rookie season, is also one of the longest pairings in the sport.

But the title never came, not even during an eight-win season in 2010 when he let Johnson off the ropes and coughed away the championship.

It was an embarrassing defeat for Hamlin, who had morphed along the way from the shy and socially awkward Southern kid into a rich race car driver with a swagger and an entourage of wealthy playboys.

He became friends with Michael Jordan and Bubba Watson; spent an offseason in Arizona working on his golf game; bought courtside seats to the Charlotte Hornets; and became known for throwing epic parties.

It’s a glamorous lifestyle, but it came with a catch: Failure to win big races and championships opened up Hamlin to criticism that he was incapable of taking the next step in his career.

He proved otherwise Sunday by winning his first Daytona 500 with a dramatic last-lap pass of teammate Matt Kenseth, then a door-to-door battle to the finish line with Martin Truex. Hamlin won “The Great American Race” by 0.01 seconds, the closest finish in Daytona 500 history.

At last, a win in a crown jewel event.

All that swagger finally had transferred onto the race track to give Hamlin a crowning moment in his career. Career victory No. 27 stood above all the others and pushed Hamlin into an elite category of driver, the one place he always has wanted to be.

The win was considerably special for Hamlin and the Joe Gibbs Racing organization in that it ended Gibbs’ 23-year drought in NASCAR’s biggest race. The three-time Super Bowl-winning coach now has two Daytona 500 rings. It also was Toyota’s first victory in “The Great American Race,” and came three months after Toyota celebrated its first Cup championship, won by Kyle Busch and Gibbs.

But on a personal level for Hamlin, the victory gives him the clout he has worked hard to earn throughout the garage. In a sport in which few drivers are willing to lash out at the sanctioning body, Hamlin never has shied away from criticizing procedures. He has been fined several times for using Twitter to take a shot at NASCAR, and he has yet to back down from pointing out injustices or inconsistencies.

Behind the scenes, Hamlin was the driving force in unifying the drivers into what ultimately grew into a driver council that debuted last season. Hamlin was

sports@daily-chronicle.com The Northern Illinois football team won’t have to wait to the Mid-American Conference Championship to potentially get another shot of Bowling Green.

The Huskies will face off against the Falcons on Nov. 1 at Huskie Stadium, one of five games at Huskie Stadium this year for NIU in the schedule the MAC released Monday.

The 2015 season was the third straight meeting for the

two in the title game, and this year the teams will have a Tuesday showdown likely on ESPN2.

The season starts for the Huskies with a pair of road game at Wyoming and South FloriRod Carey da, then home games against San Diego State and Western Illinois.

“It’s a good, challenging nonconference schedule with the two Mountain West opponents, including their de-

fending champion, a team from the American (Athletic Conference), and a really good FCS opponent in Western Illinois. And then you’ve got the MAC, which I always say is like fighting your brother,” said Rod Carey, who enters his fourth full season as NIU coach. “They know us and we know them, and every week is a battle.”

The MAC slate begins Oct. 1 with road games at Ball State and Western Michigan, then home games against Central Michigan and Buffalo.

The primetime games for

the Huskies begin Nov. 1 with the showdown against the Falcons, a game at U.S. Cellular Field against Toledo. The regular season ends with games at Eastern Michigan and Kent State.

“We have six home games again this year and that’s really important,” Carey said.

“Playing the Toledo game in Chicago is going to be a great event for our alumni and all of our fans to come out and see the Huskies in a terrific ballpark. We are looking forward to having ‘The Cell’ packed with NIU fans.”

mlazerus@suntimes.com The Blackhawks’ hallmark over the past several seasons has been their remarkable consistency, both on the scoreboard and between the ears. It’s a team that doesn’t lose in bunches, doesn’t lose big, and doesn’t lose its head. It’s why the occasional bad night has been so easy to shrug off, and why playoff deficits are so often conquered.

As the Hawks repeat ad nauseum, they never get too high, and they never get too low.

Which makes the past few months so baffling.

Since December, the Hawks have seemingly been either the best team in the league or a total disaster on any given night. They won 12 straight after Christmas. They blew out the Dallas Stars on Feb. 6. They put up seven goals on the hapless Maple Leafs on Feb. 15.

But they also lost, 4-0, Dec. 22 in Dallas. They got waxed, 4-0, Jan. 22 in Florida. They sputtered to a 5-0 loss Jan. 26 in Carolina. And they got annihilated, 6-1, by the Wild on Sunday in the outdoor game at TCF Bank Stadium. They’ve been shut out six times already. They’ve given up five goals or

more eight times (it happened only five times all of last season).

There are nights they look like world-beaters, and nights they simply look beaten.

“I don’t know what you could attribute it to,” Trevor van Riemsdyk said.

“We’ve had some games where we really let it get away.”

The fact is, this Hawks team – although a good squad, the top team in the Western Conference, and a Stanley Cup favorite – doesn’t have the same depth and mental makeup as recent teams. Ten players on the roster

weren’t on the team last season. And although the blame for the too-frequent off nights falls on everybody’s shoulders, the Hawks are allowing bad starts to snowball into awful games.

“The fact that we have a relatively new team in some cases, especially this time of year when teams are playing hard, and they’re playing for playoff spots, we’ve got to match that desperation,” Jonathan Toews said. “If it’s that fourth game of the week, or you don’t feel like you’re flying like you are in your best games, there’s no excuse to be made. You have to find ways to

execute and play the right way in some of these games, and we haven’t shown that. That’s how you come up with a 6-1 loss.”

Hawks coach Joel Quenneville has noticed the disparity in the quality of his team’s play from night to night.

“Getting behind by a big number is something that we’re unaccustomed to for the last three years,” Quenneville said. “It’s crept in a little bit in our game. It’s something that can’t happen at that regularity – or happen at all.”

The comforting thing is that the good nights far outweigh the bad nights, as the Hawks still sit atop the Central Division standings a conference-high 81 points. And the bad nights, while all too common, haven’t come in bunches; the Hawks have only two three-game losing streaks all season, and none longer. But with the Stars one point back with two games in hand, and the Blues two points back with one game in hand, the Hawks need to find the consistency that has made them a powerhouse in recent seasons.

Kaitlin Phillips joined an exclusive club in a 68-51 win Wednesday against Central College on Wednesday.

The eighth of her 14 points made her the ninth member of the Loras women’s basketKaitlin Phillips ball team to join the 1,000-point club.

Phillips had 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists Saturday as Loras closed its regular season with a 60-39 home win against Simpson.

The Duhawks (17-8, 10-4 Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) senior guard tied for team leading scorer honors with 12.7 points a game. She averaged 6.3 rebounds and dished out a Loras-best 4.3 assists a game.

Presidential hopeful tweets Cubs owners ‘have a lot to hide’

Marlene Ricketts is the wife of TD Ameritrade founder Joe Ricketts.

Their four kids make up the controlling bloc of the Cubs’ board of directors – including Pete Ricketts, the Republican governor of Nebraska.

Pete’s brother, Todd Ricketts, is the director and CEO of Ending Spending Inc., an organization affiliated with the family-funded Super PAC of a similar name that supports conservative policies. The Super PAC originally targeted public spending on private interests.

Public controversy over their political causes is nothing new to the Rickettses, who bought the Cubs in a highly leveraged deal from Tribune Company owner Sam Zell in 2009.

In 2012, a New York Times report revealed a $10 million plan by Joe Ricketts to fund a super PAC to attack President Obama with racially tinged political ads. It so infuriated Obama friend and ally Rahm Emanuel that the mayor withdrew support for $150 million of public stadium-renovation funding

that was considered all but assured until then (with no apparent opposition from the Ending Spending campaign).

It set back the Wrigley Field renovation plans by more than a year.

For now, Trump’s tweet has the look of little more than his trademark bluster.

Russell 9th again? Manager Joe Maddon said he likes the idea of keeping second-year shortstop Addison Russell as his No. 9 hitter this year, but he’s considering alternatives.

“I need to get together with our geeks and talk about batting order,” he said of the analytics department. “I really want to specifically know about the 1-2 spot [for the order of Zobrist and Jason Heyward], and I want to know what they think about Addy hitting in the 9 hole again. A lot of it last year was to benefit him, and it worked out pretty well.”

Parra signs: The Cubs signed veteran left-hander Manny Parra to a minor-league deal to roll the dice with the former Brewer and Red as potential bullpen depth.

Rose continues to elevate his game since break

Even pleading for.

Confident, unselfish and, more importantly, aware of what he does and doesn’t do well, all under the umbrella of playing a team game.

“It’s exciting to see the way he’s played since we got back from All-Star break, and the biggest thing is it’s not flashes,” veteran forward Mike Dunleavy said. “It’s been three straight games now. I can’t remember the last time he strung three straight games together. He’s doing his thing.”

And then some.

Since again taking criticism for sitting out a Feb. 8 loss in Charlotte because of “general soreness,” Rose came back from the break the player the Bulls have been pushing him to be for the past year and a half. He has averaged 26 points a game, grabbed 17 total rebounds and handed out 14 assists.

“I just feel like I’m back,” Rose said.

“I’m out there playing. Wherever I can do it to get my team a victory, that’s what I’m going to do. I’m out there, they’re giving me mid-range, they’re giving me drives to the lane, just mixing up my game. Just trying to play a solid game when I’m out there.”

What also was refreshing to hear was Rose feeling like he’s not done, either. The eye injury he suffered on the first day of training camp actually was a blessing because the lack of depth perception forced him to finally add a new dimension to his game.

That’s been the genesis of his midrange bank-shot.

“It’s an easy shot for me,” Rose said.

“My eye. My eye is getting a lot better, and I was like, ‘You know what, just add it to the repertoire,’ and it’s been working. And they give me the shot, they give me mid-range. They just don’t want me getting to the lane.

I don’t know when they’re going to learn.

“When it was messed up, I had to find like the depth perception because the rim was off, and I knew mid-range

going off the glass, I knew how hard to hit the glass. That’s a shot I’m always shooting when I warmed up. I think it’s just been repetition.”

Repetition that has turned into a lethal weapon.

“The bank-shot, it’s kind of funky, but you can see him kind of trying to get to it, and when someone is trying to do that then they have confidence in it,” Dunleavy said. “Whatever gives him confidence to make a shot, however he wants to make it, we don’t care.’’

Now the kicker in all of this: Rose has put these games together without Jimmy Butler (left knee) on the floor.

The next hurdle for both players is to show they can play together, play off each other, and put egos in check.

That in itself can save what’s been a season of disappointment.

“I think it’s an unknown ceiling,” Rose said of how good he can still get this year. “I mean the way I’m playing right now, the shots I’m taking I didn’t take when I was younger. I’m shooting off glass now. Defense can get a lot better, but I love the way I’m playing offensively.”

For the first time in a very long time, Rose isn’t alone with that thought.

PHOENIX – Add yet another group of people to Donald Trump’s growing political hit list: the Cubs’ owners.

The Ricketts family Monday joined Muslims, Mexicans, the Obama administration and female Fox News hosts on a long and prominent list of those targeted by The Wrath of The Donald.

In response to the Ricketts family’s hefty spending to defeat Trump in his bid for the Republican presidential nomination, Trump tweeted Monday morning from his @realDonaldTrump account that “They better be careful, they have a lot to hide!”

What exactly he meant by “be careful” or what he believes the Rickettses are hiding wasn’t clear. He didn’t elaborate in subsequent tweets Monday, and he did not respond to a Sun-Times

request for comment.

The Ricketts family, many of whom have long been very public and very active in conservative politics, declined comment through a spokesman.

What does seem clear is that this isn’t what the Cubs meant when they declared “Embrace the Target” as their motto for 2016.

“Oh, Lord,” baseball commissioner Rob Manfred mumbled before a question on the subject was even finished during an annual spring training media Donald Trump session Monday.

“There are so many things that have been out there as part of the political process,” he said when asked about MLB’s level of interest or concern over the insinuations in the tweet.

“If each and everything that gets said was the subject of concern or something you should be concerned about,” he added, “people would be walking around with their heads spinning due to concerns.”

Sox sign veteran SS Rollins for $2M

GLENDALE, Ariz. – The White Sox signed 37-year-old Jimmy Rollins to a $2 million minor-league deal with an invitation to spring training Monday, a move that opens the door for the 2007 National League MVP to be their starting shortstop, despite his sagging offensive numbers in 2015.

A four-time Gold Glove winner (most recently in 2012) with the Philadelphia Phillies, the switch-hitting Rollins batted .224 with a .285 on-base percentage over 563 plate appearances with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2015. He hit 13 homers and had 12 stolen bases.

The Sox’s plan, at least tentatively going into camp, was to start Tyler Saladino, a good defender who batted .225 in his first major-league season in 2015 at shortstop. The Sox first reached out to Rollins, who had offers from other teams to serve a super-utility type role but preferred the Sox because of a chance to start, in December.

“First and foremost, it provides us with another quality option for our infield,” general manager Rick Hahn said. “It provides us with some veteran depth in that area where we previously did not have it. And again, it adds to what we feel is a quality mix in the clubhouse as far as a leader, he brings energy and a competitive edge each day.

He ranks among the top five active players in career atbats, runs, doubles, triples and stolen bases, and he did pick up his production during the second half of 2015, posting a slash line of .244/.310/.395 from July to the end of the season.

He is expected in camp Thursday, two days after the club’s first full-squad workout. The Sox have a long history of acquiring aging stars past their prime – see Ken Griffey Jr., Andruw Jones, Roberto Alomar to name three – and the obvious

question is what is left in Rollins’ tank.

“We’re going to find out together,” Hahn said. “I know he feels great, he had to play through some injuries last year, he has a long history of doing that and perhaps some of those weighed on him a little bit last season. 2014 was a very quality year, consistent with what he did the bulk of his career. We’ll find out together exactly where he’s at.”

While Rollins will be given every opportunity to show it, Hahn said, “No one is given jobs until they earn jobs.

So there is certainly the opportunity that Jimmy could find himself playing fairly regularly at short, but he’s also going to come in and prepare to

be available on more of a utility basis playing multiple positions depending on how things play out.”

Rollins has played almost exclusively at shortstop during his accomplished career, but Hahn believes his athleticism would play out at second base or third, if needed there. Saladino, who excelled defensively at third last year having limited experience at the position, profiles as a better utility player.

Manager Robin Ventura talked to Saladino about the move Monday morning.

“Sally’s going to do exactly where he came here to do and that’s play hard and play for the White Sox and try and do well,” Ventura said. “As far as playing time and everything else, we’ll see how that goes out.”

“I think it takes pressure off him,” Hahn said. “It provides Robin with a chance to acclimate him into the fulltime role and just having a guy who has been that guy before that both Saladino, Tim [Anderson] and our other young players can see how he goes about his business, keeps his body in shape for a full season, how he prepares for games will be beneficial.”

The Sox may have one more move to make, perhaps for a second-tier freeagent outfielder such as Will Venable or Austin Jackson. Indications are that Dexter Fowler would be out of their price range. Fowler would also cost a compensation pick, which stands as No. 27 in the 2016 draft.

Lawrie: Sox have World Series-caliber talent

GLENDALE, Ariz. – After flopping followed high expectations in 2015, the White Sox have been trying to rally around the “let’s sneak up on them” angle this year, but that’s not picking up much steam.

USA Today pegged them for 90 wins, a prediction that sparked a flurry of reaction. On Monday, new Sox second baseman Brett Lawrie arrived at camp, looked around the clubhouse and got fired up.

“You look at the number of guys and you look at who’s in this room,” Lawrie said. “We’ve got so much talent, it’s World Series caliber, 100 percent.”

And that was before the Sox announced the addition of former MVP Jimmy Rollins, albeit in the twilight of his career. The Sox have returning allstars at third base (Todd Frazier), first

base (Jose Abreu) and pitcher (Chris Sale) and and former all-stars in left field (Melky Cabrera) and in the bullpen (David Robertson). There’s also young talent such as Adam Eaton, Jose Quintana and Carlos Rodon who potentially are on the verge of stardom.

“It’s just about refining that and coming together as a group and having some fun out Brett Lawrie there,” Lawrie said.

“Any time [you] play against the White Sox, you know who’s over there and the damage that [we] can do.”

But World Series caliber?

“No doubt,” Lawrie said. “That’s the thing about baseball, anything can happen. It’s a long year, it’s definitely a marathon, not a sprint and we just have to come together as a group and have some fun and just enjoy each oth-

er’s company and go play baseball.”

Lawrie was acquired to play third base, but that was before the Sox traded for Frazier. But he also can play second, which is where he went to field his first grounders of camp Monday morning.

That Lawrie was stoked about the Sox’s chances was no shocker. He’s a high-energy type who will add flavor to the clubhouse.

First full-squad workout Tuesday:

Cabrera also checked in Monday, leaving right fielder Avisail Garcia and minor leaguer Adam Engel as the only position players who hadn’t reported before Tuesday’s first full-squad workout. General manager Rick Hahn said he had no issue with Garcia not being here early.

“We’ll see more in the coming days, but he was certainly compliant with our offseason training program – he worked with Trick [Steverson] for an

extended period in Florida a few weeks back,” Hahn said. “Based on everything we’ve seen via video and what Todd saw firsthand, he’s where we want him to be.’’

Leadership, cont.: Clubhouse leadership has been a talking point early in camp. At 27, Eaton counts himself among the young guys who know their place on a pecking order that falls behind veterans such as Adam LaRoche – who showed Eaton a lot by dealing professionally with his struggle.

“He is a true leader on and off the field, and there’s always a lot of guys that have the same qualities throughout here,” Eaton said. “You have to follow their lead, if they’re going out and playing hard every day. Guys have got to fall in line. Don’t be that guy.”

Eaton, who had arthroscopic surgery on his left (throwing shoulder) after the season, said he’s still building toward 100 percent strength.

Pistons rescind 3-player, 3-team trade

CLEVELAND – Pistons coach Stan Van Gundy didn’t want to scrap a trade he was convinced would make his team better.

He had no other choice.

Detroit rescinded a three-player, three-team trade with the Houston Rockets and Philadelphia 76ers on Monday, negating it because not all the players involved were cleared medically.

Houston had traded guard Marcus Thornton and center Donatas Motiejunas to Detroit last week for center Joel Anthony and a protected, first-round draft pick this year.

The Rockets also made the move to acquire the draft rights of forward Chukwudiebere Maduabum from Philadelphia.

Tennessee’s 31-year run in the Top 25 is over.

The Lady Vols’ streak of 565 consecutive weeks in The Associated Press women’s basketball poll ended Monday as Tennessee fell out of the Top 25. The streak started Feb. 17, 1985.

“It’s really an amazing streak and a tribute to all of the players and coaches who’ve contributed to the Holly Warlick Lady Vols’ rich tradition of excellence,” Tennessee coach Holly Warlick said.

“The results this season haven’t been what we wanted, but I assure you my staff and I are working extremely hard to ensure that our players reach their potential and, in turn, help our program attain the level of success we expect at Tennessee.”

Tennessee (16-11) had been teetering on the edge the past few weeks and finally dropped out after losing two of its three games last week. With the Lady Vols out, UConn now has the longest active

Former Packers DB McCoy dies at age 62

GREEN BAY, Wis. – Mike C. McCoy, a former defensive back who intercepted 13 passes in an eight-year career with the Green Bay Packers, has died. He was 62.

The Packers said Monday in a blog post that McCoy was diagnosed with dementia in the past decade.

No cause of death was given by the team.

His wife, Janet, told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel in September that McCoy had to be moved to an assisted living facility. They lived in Thornton, Colorado.

McCoy played his entire NFL career with Green Bay after being drafted in the third round in 1976 from Colorado.

A native of West Memphis, Arkansas, McCoy recovered five fumbles

“It’s very impressive,” said Tamika Catchings, who starred for the Lady Vols from 1997 to 2001.

“That’s huge. Like anything else, streaks come to an end at some point and time. Thirty-one years, that’s amazing. To be a part of it was really awesome. Highs and lows. Unfortunately they are going through a little low right now, but it will get better.”

During that 31-year run, the Lady Vols had been ranked No. 1 103 times. They were in the first five 407 weeks and top 10 506 times.

Since the poll began in 1976, Tennessee had only missed a total of 15 weeks before Monday. The Lady Vols were not in the first poll, then missed four weeks in 1981-82. They also had a 10-week gap in 1984-85.

While the Lady Vols fell out, UConn continued its run at No. 1.

The Huskies cruised through two more easy victories. They host SMU on Wednesday and then Tulane on Saturday. This was the 200th week overall that UConn has been No. 1 in the poll.

Wichita police: Ex-Cowboys RB Randle hit 3 with car

Former Dallas Cowboys running back Joseph Randle was jailed Monday in his hometown of Wichita after police said he hit three people with a car and then broke through the front door of a home he had been asked to leave.

Police Lt. James Espinoza said Randle was ordered to leave a housewarming party early Sunday after getting into an argument. While backing out of the driveway, police say, he hit the 29-year-old man and 27-yearold woman who own the home and a 26-year-old man. Espinoza said the three weren’t seriously injured, and retreated to the home as Randle left.

Smoking habit linked to nicotine Dear Dr. K: I’ve decided to quit smoking.

Do you think low-nicotine cigarettes could be a good stepping-stone to kicking the habit completely?

Dear Reader: I’m always glad when readers ask about how to quit smoking.

It causes so many health problems and so much misery. And while it’s not easy, people can quit smoking. Yet millions of adults and teenagers continue to smoke. The main reason is nicotine.

Nicotine is a stimulant that makes smokers feel calm and relaxed. It also is the addictive substance found in all tobacco products. The more you smoke, the more you need to smoke to feel good. It’s the pull of nicotine that makes quitting so difficult.

Recently a team of researchers set out to answer a similar question to the one you asked. In essence, they wanted to know: If you could reduce the amount of nicotine in cigarettes, would it help people quit?

Or might it cause them to smoke more to compensate?

The researchers followed more than 800 adults who smoked at least five cigarettes a day. These study volunteers had no desire to quit smoking. They were asked to either continue smoking their regular brand of cigarette or to smoke one of six types of investigational cigarettes. These cigarettes contained varying amounts of nicotine, ranging from 15.8 milligrams (mg) of nicotine per gram of tobacco (the amount found in most commercial brands) all the way down to 0.4 mg per gram. The smokers were followed for six weeks.

The results were unexpected. The people given the lower-nicotine cigarettes smoked 23 percent to 30 percent fewer cigarettes a day than those who smoked the cigarettes with 15.8 mg of nicotine per gram. Perhaps even more surprising, the low-nicotine cigarette smokers also had reduced depen-

This study lasted only six weeks. We’ll need longer trials to help us really understand whether low-nicotine cigarettes are a “safer” option for people who are trying to quit.

In the meantime, if you want to quit, nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) can help you overcome the physical addiction of nicotine. NRT comes in many forms, including patches, lozenges, gum and nasal sprays.

Prescription drugs, such as bupropion (Zyban) and varenicline (Chantix), also can help smokers quit. They reduce physical cravings and make smoking less enjoyable.

These methods work especially well when combined with behavioral supports, such as talk therapy.

My patients who are contemplating quitting often get hung up on a misconception.

They ask, “The damage already is done, so what’s the use of quitting?” In fact, here’s what happens after you smoke your last cigarette. After 12 hours, your tissues are better able to get needed oxygen from your blood. Within one month, your lungs begin to recover. After one year, your risk of a having a heart attack, a stroke or getting lung cancer begins to fall.

It isn’t easy, but you can quit. There are more ex-smokers in the United States today than there are smokers.

Dear Abby: No DEAR ABBY matter what I do, I am never Jeanne satisfied. I have Phillips a great wife and two great kids, yet I always feel as if I could have done better with my life. I go to work, and no matter how hard I work, I feel as if I never get recognition for it. When I go out with friends, we have a great time, but I never feel like I really am part of the group. I feel like the outcast who gets invited just so they won’t feel bad.

I don’t know why I feel this way. I do suffer from depression and have spoken to a specialist.

People often tell me I spread myself too thin and never relax enough to enjoy my success. But how can I relax when I always feel unsatisfied with my efforts? – Just Not Satisfied Dear Not Satisfied: A way to do that would be to start by examining why you are so hard on yourself. Whether it was caused by parents who didn’t give you the validation you needed while growing up or a lack of self-esteem, until you understand why you are hurting yourself this way, your problem won’t be resolved. You say you have spoken to “a specialist” about your depression. Perhaps it’s time for another visit and a chat about what’s really bothering you.

Dear Abby: Years ago when I was married, I bought a beautiful two-carat solitaire ring as a sign of my accomplishment at work. Now that I’m divorced, I continue to wear the ring on my wedding ring finger.
