Will novelty draw a crowd to Huskies’ game?

So Northern Illinois’ football team will play Toledo on a Wednesday night in November at U.S. Cellular Field, and not everyone is wild about the idea.

I understand why. Taking one of those home football games out of the community has an economic impact.

Even a game that draws only 8,500 fans in DeKalb is better for local businesses than one that draws 30,000 in Chicago.

NIU Athletic Director Sean Frazier said he has “145,000 reasons” for playing a weeknight game in Chicago. Those would be the alumni living in the Chicago area who might otherwise not come out to a game.

This is a game designed to appeal to them, not necessarily to local fans, or to students – at least, not the ones who might not have cars or have early morning classes the next day.

I’m not really convinced that where the game is played has as much to do with the attendance as the time and day of the week when it is played.

A cold, rainy Wednesday night game just is not going to be as well-attended as a Satur-

Notice you don’t see Michigan, Ohio State or Alabama playing their games in odd settings.

People would revolt.

We’ll see if the novelty of a football game on a Chicago baseball field is enough to draw the 30,000 fans for the ESPN-TV audience. If it does, there will probably be more midweek dates in Chicago to come.

OBAMA HONORS BLACKHAWKS FOR STANLEY CUP HAT TRICK

President Barack Obama on Thursday celebrated his hometown Chicago Blackhawks for winning another Stanley Cup, calling the team’s third title in six years an “amazing championship run.”

Obama took credit for the Blackhawks’ performance, noting that it had gone nearly a half century without winning the NHL trophy before he took office.

Local high-school gymnasts will begin the IHSA Gymnastics State Championships at Palatine High School today, with high hopes of taking top honors.

The state’s top girls gymnasts will begin the two-day competition with the all-around is today. They will compete in individual events Saturday.

Barbs’ junior Aleah Leman is considered a strong contender in the all-around, and the Barbs have to feel good about their team, which posted the second-highest score among all four state sectional winners.

Coach Andy Morreale said freshman Madison Hickey should challenge in the floor, as well.

Gaming machines bring unexpected revenue boost

SYCAMORE – Cabana Charley’s has closed, but Derick Ibarra hopes to stay in business in the Sycamore community.

“Sycamore was just ready for something different,” Ibarra said.

“The tolerance for this kind of environment is growing quickly.”

Charley’s Video Gaming opened a few months before the restaurant closed in September. The larger space once occupied by the restaurant is still vacant, but the 1,200 square-foot space next door has 5 gambling machines – poker and slots, primarily – and serves alcohol, soda and snacks such as popcorn and cookies.

Some facilities are dedicated gambling spaces, as opposed to bars or restaurants which happen to have the machines available. Charley’s Video Gaming is dedicated to the machines.

“There are other places in Sycamore like restaurants and bars that allow gaming, but you are there for different reasons. You’re at a restaurant to eat. You’re at a bar to drink,” he said. “When you’re in a place like this, its more comfortable, because everyone here is doing the exact same thing.”

Charley’s is one of 12 businesses that offer video gambling in Sycamore. With each passing year, video terminals have increased in number, from 39 in 2013 to 52 in 2015, according to the Illinois Gaming Board. The city of DeKalb has seen a similar increase.

In 2013, the city had 37 machines in nine businesses. By 2015, 16 establishments in DeKalb had 64 machines.

The machines have been scrutinized in the past, but officials said the benefits of increased revenue are good for the community and there has been no downside.

Ibarra said that although getting through the licensing and approval process was a bit of a task, the reputation that Cabana Charley’s had built was a help.

“We had a liquor license with the restaurant that has been in good standing for seven years,” he said.

“So we had the reputation already. …

I think every day, every month, every year, people’s tolerance is just going to get higher.”

after the state legislature passed the Video Gaming Act. Local ordinances can be stricter than the state law. In Sycamore and DeKalb, gaming licenses are limited to businesses that have a liquor and bar license. In Sycamore, organizations such as veterans clubs can also have the machines.

he was worried at first that allowing gambling spaces in the community could lead to someone’s downfall, but so far that hasn’t happened.

“Things that we do in excess, generally aren’t going to be good for us,” he said. “I think, generally, people are responsible and have a good idea of what they can wager and what they can risk.”

Mundy added the number of facilities that offer gaming is naturally capped, because of legal limits on the number of bars per-capita in Sycamore is 12.

Kirkland mayor addresses Genoa Chamber gala

DeKALB – The way local businesses and others rallied around the tiny town of Fairdale after last year’s tornado was a remarkable show of unity, Kirkland Mayor Les Bellah said Thursday.

He made the remarks during his keynote address to a packed hall of business owners and other stakeholders who attended the Genoa Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual dinner. The event was held at The Genoa Veterans Home.

“It was absolutely remarkable to see the thousands and thousands of people who stepped up to help,” said Bellah.

The EF4 tornado devastated the tiny, rural town. Two peple were killed, 11 injured and many more had their lives forever changed.

Bellah applauded the many local business owners – several of whom were members of the Genoa Chamber – and the town of Genoa for their aid and support. He added that donations poured in after the disaster, with more than $2 million collected for the recovery effort.

“People we didn’t know were just jumping out of the woodwork to help,” he said.

The night was a recognition for the more than 160 members of the business-centric organization. Thursday marked the Genoa Area Chamber’s 59th annual dinner and meeting, organizers said.

Chamber leaders pointed out that the organization not only grew by 26 new members last year but also held on to more of the current ones.

“We’ve had the most successful year to date in the retention of members,” Cortney Strohacker, the Genoa Area Chamber of Commerce executive director, said of its 2015 membership.

Dozens of businesses were recognized for their chamber memberships, which spanned five to 140 years. Other businesses picked up excellence awards, including Lloyd Landscaping

and Garden Center and Custom Aluminum Products.

Carolyn Tobinson received a standing ovation as she accepted the chamber’s outstanding ambassador award.

“The recipient of this award this year has been a pillar in our business community, a driving force in our economic development, a community support and a personal mentor to me,”

Strohocker said as she presented Tobinson with the honor.

Tobinson then presented the chamber’s Dave Tobinson Award, which is named after her father, to Pattie Marx.

The award recognizes the chamber’s member of the year.

Marx received the award for “always taking on responsibility to ensure chamber events are successful.”

Proposed unlawful assembly ordinances draw more comment

DeKALB – Looking back, DeKalb Police Chief Gene Lowery said he wouldn’t have brought forward the controversial proposed unlawful assembly ordinances that have drawn intense public criticism over the course of the past month, he said Thursday at a special meeting of DeKalb’s Human Relations Commission.

“We have wasted so much time, political and community capital on this ordinance,” he said. He later added, at the end of the three-hour meeting, that the city could “survive with or without this ordinance.”

The proposed ordinance lay out what constitutes an unlawful assembly and how police officers should manage the crowd. Under the proposal, a group of 10 or more is considered an assembly. An assembly could become what officials call unlawful for a variety of reasons such as if someone blocks the roads and sidewalks, commits arson, causes property damage or crosses police lines.

OBITUARIES ANNETTE M. LEVI Born: April 9, 1937 Died: Feb. 14, 2016

Annette M. Levi, 78, Rockford, passed away Sunday, February 14, 2016, in her home.

She was born April 9, 1937, in DeKalb, Illinois, the daughter of James and Mabel (Bergstrom) Dongas. She graduated from DeKalb High school in 1955. On April 26, 1958, she married the love of her life, Laverne Levi, at Mission Covenant Church, in DeKalb, Illinois. She worked many clerical jobs over the years, both in DeKalb and Rockford, but the job she felt most passionate about was her role as a wife, mother, Nana, and Great Nana. She enjoyed baking cookies, feeding and caring for birds, playing piano, spending time at her family cabin in Eagle River, Wisconsin, and playing Bunco with her Bunco Girls for over 45 years. Annette was an avid reader and adoring sports fan, whether it was her grandchildren or professional sports. She was a loyal member of Spring Creek United Church of Christ, and former, proud member of their choir. She was a devoted wife to Laverne, loving mother to her children and grandchildren. Annette was a woman who lived selflessly, compassionately, and will be missed dearly.

She is survived by her children, Cheryl (Kevin) McCauley of DeKalb and Paul (Jan) Levi of Belvidere; her grandchildren, Lindsey (Ryan) Thompson, Kristen (Colin Fannon) Levi, Michael, Matthew and Ben Levi; her greatgrandchildren, Wesley, Henry, and Charley; her brother, Jack (Karen) Myers;

Police: Chicago man beat child over soiled diaper

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A 3-year-old boy remained at Kishwaukee Hospital on Thursday afternoon after police said a Chicago man beat him for soiling his diaper.

Keith Crist, 21, of the 6800 block of Emerald Avenue, Chicago, is charged with aggravated battery to a child,

which is punishable by six to 30 years in prison.

Police met with the boy and his mother at Kishwaukee Hospital on Wednesday when Keith Crist the investigation began, according to a news release. Crist was arrested at the DeKalb Police Department after

an interview with officers.

Crist punched the boy between the legs and hit him there with a large toy, then punched the child’s backside with his fist, according to a news release. The injuries were not life-threatening, police said.

Crist was visiting the child’s family at the time of the incident, and DeKalb County Judge Philip Montgomery said he was concerned about

Crist missing court appearances, calling his connection to DeKalb County “tenuous at best.”

Montgomery set Crist’s bond at $250,000 Thursday. Crist must post $25,000 bail to be released from the DeKalb County Jail. Upon his release, Crist is barred from having contact with the boy or the boy’s mother.

His next court appearance is scheduled for March 18.

Man charged in gang robbery also faces sex abuse charges

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Police said a Rockford man charged in a potentially gang-related robbery also is responsible for sexually abusing an underage girl.

Authorities said Gabriel Curl, 19, was living in a vacant DeKalb home when he invited a man inside and proceeded to beat and burn him for money and cigarettes, according to court records.

However, police said just days earlier, on Feb. 7, Curl pushed an underage girl onto a bed, and detained and sexually abused another underage girl.

The charges were brought separate-

ly from those connected with the Feb. 8 and 10 other robberies in the 1500 block of Elmwood Drive, DeKalb, where Curl was illegally staying without heat or water, DeKalb police Cmdr. Bob Redel said. Should he post bail and be released from the DeKalb County Jail, Curl may have no contact with either of the juvenile girls.

Another girl, who police believe is friends with Curl, has also been arrested in connection with the robberies. The girl, 16, is charged with aggravated rob-

bery with a firearm, aggravated battery, mob action, obstructing identification, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, and aggravated unlawful restraint.

The three are known to be affiliated with a street gang and police have said they believe the incidents were gang related.

But since high schools are often feeders for the state’s community colleges and four-year universities, officials such as Northern Illinois University Vice President of Administration and Finance Al Phillips were disappointed that Rauner made no mention of higher education in his address.

NIU is among the state’s 12 universities that have gone without any state aid so far this fiscal year – which began July 1 – because of the budget impasse.

NIU President Doug Baker announced at a town hall meeting early this week that NIU is poised to hold on financially in the short run, but will need to get some money before next spring’s semester.

In Malta, Kishwaukee College leaders have said the two-year college is already nearly financially threadbare.

Come July 1, the college will lay off 17 percent of its workforce because of the budget issues, President Laurie Borowicz said earlier this month.

“I hope the governor will support higher education in the fiscal year ‘17 budget. ... The uncertainty is really challenging,” Borowicz said. “It’s really important for the state to fund education for our youth. I find it equally important to fund higher education, but I don’t see them in competition.

DeKALB – Gov. Bruce Rauner’s call this week for increased pre-K through 12 funding gets a cautious thumbs-up from some local education officials, while higher ed leaders said they still feel shut out of state budget plans.

Rauner delivered the second budget address of his term Wednesday, and called for pouring an additional $75 million into early education, and raising the amount of per-student aid given to public school districts. He said the $393 million his fiscal 2017 plan would give to early education would be the most in state history.

The state is still without a fiscal 2016 budget.

“The one thing I won’t back down on, the one thing that’s not negotiable for me, is increasing education funding,” Rauner said in the budget speech he gave on the House floor in Springfield. “We must make the education of our children our top priority.”

Funding for other budget items, including social services, he said, would come from the legislature yielding him financial authority or compromising on what he has called his reforms agenda.

Skeptics question Chicago video policy

The Associated Press CHICAGO – Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s promise to release videos of police shootings in no more than three months was touted as a way to bring more transparency to Chicago after the city took more than a year to make public the footage of a teenager’s death.

But skeptics question why Chicago needs so long to release the same type of videos that Cincinnati and Seattle already make public within days, if not hours. That has sown doubts that the new practice will do little to restore the trust that was damaged when the public saw the now-famous video of an officer firing an entire magazine into Laquan McDonald, as he appeared to walk away from police.

The policy announced Tuesday calls for all videos to be released within 60 days. The deadline could be extended to 90 days if law enforcement requests a delay.

SPRINGFIELD – Gov. Bruce Rauner has created a special cabinet to streamline education and issues regarding young people across Illinois.

Rauner signed an executive order Thursday morning at a middle school in Riverton, outside Springfield, creating the Governor’s Cabinet on Children and Youth. He said the cabinet will bring together all state entities that deal with children into a central unit. He’s calling it the Children’s Cabinet.

The governor said he wants the cabinet to make sure state resources are used effectively and working together. State Secretary of Education Beth Purvis said the current system in Illinois is “fragmented.”

The cabinet has nearly 20 members, including the chiefs of state agencies such as the Department of Children and Family Services and Department of Juvenile Justice.

Bond set at $150,000 for arrested serial stowaway

CHICAGO – A woman with a history of sneaking aboard airplanes has been arrested again at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport.

Bond was set Thursday at $150,000 for 64-year-old Marilyn Hartman. Police said she was arrested Wednesday at an airport bus shuttle center. She’s due in court Tuesday on charges of felony probation violation and misdemeanor criminal trespassing.

Hartman has tried numerous times in recent years to board planes without a ticket, succeeding at least once by flying from San Jose, California, to Los Angeles in August 2014. She was arrested twice in two days last summer at O’Hare and Chicago’s Midway International Airport. She also has airport-related arrests in Arizona.

Hartman was released on probation to a Chicago nursing home in December, and ordered to avoid airports and Chicago’s Union Station.

Baby sitter faces trial deadline in murder case

WAUKEGAN – A Lake County judge said an Illinois baby sitter charged with killing a 3-month-old Wisconsin girl will go to trial Feb. 29 unless progress on

But he wonders how much good the new policy will do.

“There is no way this is not an improvement. ... But I see it as an insufficient step if the goal is to earn trust,” Futterman said. “To establish trust, that means being honest from the beginning, not 60 days, 90 days later.”

Sergio Acosta, a former federal prosecutor who helped craft the policy, said the 60-day deadline does that.

“Basically, we wanted to give investigators sufficient time to do what they needed to do in terms of interviewing people and gathering other evidence

that would not be tainted by a release that is too early,” said Acosta, who also is a member of a task force Emanuel created after the release of the video to make recommendations on how to reform the police force.

The new policy also lets the public know that the days of keeping evidence a secret indefinitely are over, and it puts investigators on notice that the clock is ticking, he said. If police ask for an additional 30 days, those requests must be made in writing and will be made public along with videos and police reports.

Acosta also said he does not expect all the releases to take 60 or 90 days.

Some will come out much quicker.

Other big-city departments already get videos to the public far sooner. In Seattle, the police department released dashcam video last month of police shooting a knife-wielding man the day after it happened. It was the same Thursday in Cincinnati, where the day after police shot and killed a man they say was reaching for a gun, they released cellphone video shot from a nearby car in a mere 17 hours.

U of Chicago Medicine seeks OK for expansion

CHICAGO – University of Chicago Medicine has submitted to state regulators a $269 million expansion proposal that includes an adult trauma center.

The health system announced Thursday it’s asking regulators to approve the addition of 188 inpatient beds. Hospital officials said that would return the hospital to roughly its size in the late 1970s.

The plan includes turning Mitchell Hospital into a cancer center.

CHAMPAIGN – The Champaign County Board of Review has affirmed its decision to put area hospital properties back on the tax rolls.

The Champaign News-Gazette reported the board’s decision affects Carle health system and Presence Covenant Medical Center. An attorney for Carle said the health system will pay about $9 million in property taxes this year. Attorney Steven Pflaum said that’s “way too high.”

The decision stems from an Illinois 4th District Appellate Court ruling in January that a state law allowing hospitals to avoid taxes is unconstitutional. The ruling reopened a statewide dispute over whether hospitals should be exempt from paying millions of dollars in income taxes and property taxes to local governments.

Pope on Trump: Building border wall ‘not Christian’ The ASSOCIATED PRESS ABOARD THE PAPAL PLANE – Thrusting himself into the heated American presidential campaign, Pope Francis declared Thursday that Donald Trump is “not Christian” if he wants to address illegal immigration only by building a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Trump fired back ferociously, saying it was “disgraceful” for a religious leader to question a person’s faith.

The rare back-and-forth between pontiff and presidential candidate was the latest astonishing development in an American election already roiled by Trump’s free-wheeling rhetoric and controversial policy proposals, particularly on immigration. It also underscored the popular pope’s willingness to needle U.S. politicians on hot-button issues.

Francis’ comments came hours after he concluded a visit to Mexico, where he prayed at the border for people who died trying to reach the U.S. While speaking to reporters on the papal plane, he was asked what he thought of Trump’s campaign pledge to build a wall along the entire length of the border and expel millions of people in the U.S. illegally.

“A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian,” he said. While Francis said he would “give the benefit of the doubt” because he had not heard Trump’s border plans independently, he added, “I say only that this man is not a Christian if he has said

things like that.”

Trump, a Presbyterian and the front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination, responded within minutes.

“For a religious leader to question a person’s faith is disgraceful,” he said at a campaign stop in South Carolina, which holds a key primary on Saturday. “I am proud to be a Christian, and as president I will not allow Christianity to be consistently attacked and weakened.”

Trump also raised the prospect of the Islamic State extremist group attacking the Vatican, saying that if that happened, “the pope would have only wished and prayed that Donald Trump would have been president because this would not have happened.”

Francis, the first pope from Latin America, urged Congress during his visit to Washington last year to respond to immigrants “in a way which is always humane, just and fraternal.”

He irked Republicans on the same trip with his forceful call for international action to address climate change.

Immigration is among the most contentious issues in American politics. Republicans have moved toward hardline positions that emphasize law enforcement and border security, blocking comprehensive legislation in 2013 that would have included a path to citizenship for many of the 11 million people in the U.S. illegally.

Hispanics, an increasingly large voting bloc in U.S. presidential elections, have flocked to Democrats in recent years.

Budget first, then schools Illinois has a lot of problems.

One of them is the state school funding formula, which dates to 1997 and – many people agree – shortchanges students in poorer school districts.

Making the funding formula more equitable is the goal of legislators in both houses of the Illinois General Assembly.

Senate Democrats have offered a couple plans. Last year, a bill sponsored

by Senate President John Cullerton was approved by the Senate. It would phase out the current school funding system and create a new system, based on the research of a task force.

A second bill, sponsored by Bunker Hill Democratic Sen. Andy Manar, would, among other things, create a funding formula based on local districts’ needs, so those with a lower property tax base would receive more money from the state.

Manar’s formula would send more state money to schools with more special education students than average. It also would factor in differences in the cost of living across the state.

Over in the House, Speaker Michael Madigan said this month he plans to appoint a bipartisan panel to come up with a plan to ensure equitable school funding.

Where would the money come from to bring the “have-nots” up to fair funding levels without penalizing the “haves”?

Majority Democrats support a higher state income tax rate, and Madigan wants to add a surtax on Illinoisans who earn more than $1 million a year.

Both are nonstarters, in our view.

The futures of thousands of schoolchildren hang in the balance. No wonder Cullerton called it “the defining crisis of our time.”

Yet, there’s another, even greater crisis that we’d like to see resolved first: the budget crisis.

The lack of a full state budget since July 1, 2015, continues to weaken our state.

Comptroller Leslie Munger said Illinois is on track to fall $6.2 billion further into debt this fiscal year because of the budget stalemate. She expects Illinois to spend $1.2 billion more than it did last year, while taking in $5 billion less because of the partial expiration of the temporary income tax increase.

Illinois’ budget woes, growing more urgent by the day, must be resolved first.

To the Editor: There is something peculiarly unsettling about the passing of a previous generation. It must be so, in part because we find ourselves several inches closer to eternity.

But more unnerving still is the reality that now we, the survivors, are entrusted with their legacy, a legacy over which we dangle the twin powers of preservation and destruction.

Cool reason reminds us that we may no longer rely on the powerful words and mores of our ancestors. We must fight our own battles now. Often brutally uncompromising in his views, Justice Antonin Scalia’s passing heralds the crumbling of a pillar of conservativism in the United States. And, already, politicians have begun greedily casting lots for his robes. Already, the conservative ideology has progressed ever so slightly, the tide at long last has turned the boulder to sand.

It may be that the bench Scalia adjudicated from was tired and worn, a relic of another era. Perhaps the rule of five, against which he so vehemently cautioned, was always destined to satisfy the masses’ lust for progress. Perhaps the ultimate rejection of self-government was written in Astraios’ hand, as something unpreventable.

In a society that values uniformity of

thought, it is indeed painful to see that titan fade.

Now we come at last to the issue: While our Democratic and Republican sovereigns host their polarizing bacchanalia, we, the next generation, puzzle in our hearts the significance of a legacy of dissent.

Will we choose to smother the progenies of originalism as they sleep?

Will we allow them to lie dormant? Or will we continue to value intellectual diversity and proffer one another a world that refuses to tacitly consent to the urgings of cloaked monarchs who profess the common will?

Let us assume the full responsibility that the death of our elders bestows upon us. The preservation of their legacy is a blessed burden upon our shoulders. May learning from our past battles grant us hope for our future peace.

May Antonin Scalia rest in peace, and may God grant us the strength to endure on our own.

Diet soda sweetener has health effects

To the Editor: I am a nursing student at Saint Anthony College of Nursing and have more recently been drawn to the

community health problem of intake of aspartame.

Aspartame is often found in diet sodas and sugar-free products. Recent studies have been published stating the dangers of the consumption of aspartame of which many people are unaware.

It has been found that individuals who consume aspartame have a weaker spatial orientation and are more irritable and depressed (Linseth, Coolahan, Petros, & Lindseth, 2014).

These are just a few of the short-term effects that have been found.

In addition, a major factor that impacts the side effects of aspartame is the amount that is consumed; the higher the amount, the more damaging the effects.

Lastly, when aspartame is processed in the body, it is broken down to become part formaldehyde, which many may know as the “stuff” that preserves animals that are to be dissected.

I truly believe that people need to be more aware of the disturbing and damaging effects of aspartame and that next time they reach for a Diet Coke or sugar-free product, they will think twice. Thank you.

President Obama spreads new sentiment Excited as they were about a presidential visit, legislators aren’t likely to be moved to action by his words.

President Barack Obama paid a visit last week to the Illinois General Assembly, where he delivered an admirable call for a different kind of politics that embraces a search for common ground in pursuit of the common good.

A clarion call for common sense is always welcome in Springfield. That’s particularly so as the state is in its eighth month without a budget.

The political process has failed the people of Illinois, and that pain is not mitigated by the fact no one in either party feels good about the budget standoff.

Obama touched on that point as well. He went on at great length about the virtues of intra-party cooperation while identifying in a single paragraph why the words he uttered ultimately will ring hollow with the power players in Springfield.

Observing that Republicans applauded when he touted legislative redistricting reform and Democrats cheered when he advocated automatic voter registration, Obama went to the heart of the problem.

“Now, just during the course of this talk, it’s been interesting to watch the dynamics, obviously. In part because so much of our politics now is just designed for short-term, tactical gain. If you think having more

voters will hurt you on Election Day, then suddenly you’re not interested in participation. And if you think gerrymandering is helping you instead of hurting you, then you’re not for those proposals,” he said.

In other words, it’s all about individual self-interest.

Does anyone seriously think House Speaker Michael Madigan will abandon his lifelong approach to Chicago-style, bare-knuckle politics?

Can Gov. Bruce Rauner, a furniture-breaking, turnaround artist from the private sector, embrace the failed status quo Madigan favors?

Further, how many of our legislators would willingly give up their pay, perks, pensions and prestige as a

condition of meeting the civics class ideal Obama recommended?

Politics has been defined as the making of decision by public means, and there’s much that goes into those decisions that is unattractive. How else would so many elected officials, particularly in Illinois, end up in prison?

If sinners can go to church to hear a rousing sermon, there’s no harm in Illinois legislators hearing appeals to set aside their self-interest to serve broader interests.

But the current stalemate won’t end until enough elected officials feel enough heat to persuade them to make concessions now considered unthinkable.

What are millennials thinking?

Every year, Beloit College offers a glimpse with its “mindset list,” which offers dozens of single-sentence declarations to reflect the current state of the familiar for incoming freshmen.

This year’s list, describing the mindset of the 2019 college graduate, indicates that, for these millennials, “first responders have always been heroes” (No. 36), “four foul-mouthed kids have always been playing in South Park” (No. 5) and “TV has always been in such high definition that they could see the pores of actors and the grimaces of quarterbacks” (No. 44).

Also on the list, at No. 9: “The announcement of someone being the ‘first woman’ to hold a position has only impressed their parents.”

Media coverage and recent voter turnout in the Democratic primaries in Iowa and New Hampshire indicate this is an accurate assessment of the millennial mind even when we are talking about electing the first woman to be president of the United States.

Board of health honors septic system efforts DAILY CHRONICLE Christina Jones, DeKalb County Board of Health president, presented a certificate of appreciation to Bill Nicklas and Kevin Bunge for their significant contributions to the Fairdale Community Septic System, at the board of health meeting Jan. 26.

Nicklas, president of the Long-term Recovery Corp. in 2015, and Bunge, LTRC member and DeKalb County Board District 1 representative, shared the work that went into planning and building the system that became operational on Dec. 18. Rebuilding Fairdale after the destruction caused by the EF4 tornado on April 9, 2015, included addressing septic systems. Before the tornado, homeowners had individual systems for each property.

The community septic system resolved a public health dilemma posed by properties in close proximity that, in many cases, did not allow for the proper amount of distance between septic systems and wells on a property. Distance is needed to prevent contamination of drinking water.

Nicklas provided leadership, coordination and oversight. Bunge, a professional engineer, designed the system.

Both recognized the coordinated efforts of health department and county staff, and additional volunteers that were instrumental in accomplishing the project in a relatively short time frame.

In addition, Nicklas explained that the LTRC raised funds, as the disaster did not meet federal criteria for financial assistance, and state and local resources were already exhausted.

Seventeen Sycamore High School students were selected to participate in the 2016 Illinois Music Education Conference held at the Peoria Civic Center in Peoria.

This year, Sycamore High School had the 11th largest All-State music student representation of any high school in Illinois. Students were selected via a rigorous audition process from the district ILMEA festival held earlier this year. Illinois has nine districts throughout the state, and each district was able to send its top students to be represented at this All-

State Conference.

All-State musicians were treated to a special rally as they departed for the weekend festival. Fellow students, faculty, and family gathered in the choir room for a brief send-off.

DeKalb High School senior Robert Mitchell was selected as the DeKalb Rotary Club Student of the Month for January because of his positive leadership and service to the school.

Mitchell has been on the “A” honor roll all four years of high school and is a member of the National Honor Society, National English Honor Society and varsity basketball team. Mitchell was recently named a State of Illinois Scholar for being among the top 10 percent of all Illinois high school seniors.

Active in the community, Mitchell is a member of the DeKalb County Community Foundation’s Youth Engaged in Philanthropy and the Youth Advisory Council for the Illinois 70th Legislative District.

The Shabbona United Church of Christ Mission Board will host its annual Spaghetti Dinner and Cookie Bazaar on March 7, beginning at 4 p.m. for carryouts and 4:30 to 7 p.m. for dine-in.

Indian Creek moves into Elite 8 Vann’s clutch 3 gives T’wolves 1st sectional crown

jseverson@shawmedia.com SERENA – The Indian Creek girls basketball team could have settled for the last shot.

But MaKayli Vann was open.

The Timberwolves’ sophomore guard hit the game-winning 3-pointer in the closing seconds of a thrilling 4239 win over Annawan on Thursday in the Class 1A Serena Sectional championship game in a packed gym.

With the score tied at 39, Vann received a pass on the right side from senior center Josie Diehl and knocked down the 3-pointer against Annawan’s zone defense with 18 seconds left.

“The game is tied and this is the first time in school history we’ve been here, so I had an opportunity so why not take the shot and take a risk?” Vann said with a smile.

It’s uncharted territory for the Timberwolves, who improved to 30-1 after playing in – and winning – their first sectional championship in school history. They advance to play Galena (27-2) in the Class 1A Oglesby Supersectional at 7 p.m. Monday at Illinois Valley Community College.

“We’ve never been to a sectional title (game), we got it,” Indian Creek coach Paul Muchmore said. “We’ve played a lot of big games in packed gyms this year. They know how to handle it.”

The win over Annawan (29-5) was the first victory this postseason for the Timberwolves decided by fewer than 18 points. They defeated Amboy, 48-30, in the Gardner South Wilmington Regional.

Vann finished with 13 of her teamhigh 15 points in the second half, helping the Timberwolves break the Bravettes’ tough zone defense that held Indian Creek to only three points in the second quarter. Senior guard Madison Russell provided nearly all the outside shooting for the Timberwolves, finishing with 14 points and connecting on four of the Timberwolves’ five 3-pointers. “[Vann] isn’t intimidated by anything,” Muchmore said of her performance against the zone. “Sometimes it gets her into some trouble, but she’s super confident. They were trying to take away Josie, and I think Madison also did a great job – she hit some big 3s.”

The Bravettes pushed the lead to 2215 midway through the third quarter before MaKayli Vann took over.

After a 3-pointer by Russell, Vann made an outstanding pass that led to a layup by senior Alexis Van Wyhe.

Vann followed that with a pull-up jumper on a fast break to tie it at 22 and a layup off an in-bounds play to give the Timberwolves the lead.

Vann had another layup to put the Timberwolves ahead 35-29 with 4:37 – their largest lead of the game.

However, the Bravettes answered with a 7-2 run to tie it at 37 with 3:03 remaining, before the Vann sisters came up with their two baskets – MaKenzie’s layup and MaKayli’s 3-pointer.

Annawan had two chances to tie it with a 3-pointer in the final 10 seconds, but both missed – setting off an eruption of cheers from the Indian Creek team and crowd as the final buzzer sounded.

“We just played our defense and didn’t foul and didn’t let [VanHyfte] beat us,” Muchmore said. “Defense is what we do. It’s been there all year long.”

Morreale said a team title isn’t out of the realm of possibility, if all the chips fall right. Aleah Leman said the team is not wrapped up with that particular title, just taking a top three.

“It’s something like, it would be nice if we got it,” Leman said. “It’s something we’re working toward, but it’s not some-

thing where if we don’t get it, we’re going to be absolutely devastated.”

Hickey said she’s ready for her first state championship as a member of the co-op.

“We’re so exited. We’re so pumped,” Hickey said. “We all know we’re going to do our very best.”

A single champ in an individual event and outside of the top three as a team was a fine finish last season for the DeKalb-Sycamore co-op gymnastics team.

This year, coach Andy Morreale said the bar is set much, much higher as the Barbs are set to compete in the IHSA Gymnastics State Championships at Palatine. The all-around is today, with individual events Saturday.

“Each meet, I think, we’re on an uphill rise,” Morreale said. “I think we’re peaking at the right time to have our best performance. Each meet we’ve increased our team scores.”

The Barbs posted a 147.525 to win their sectional, the second-highest from any of the other four sectionals, behind only Prairie Ridge’s 149.55.

Morreale said the team is focused for a top-three finish. He also said junior Aleah Leman – state champion in the vault last year – is a strong contender for the all-around title, plus individual title in the vault and floor.

He said freshman Madison Hickey should challenge in the floor, as well.

Leman said she hopes to defend her vault title despite increased competition in the event, but said the main goal for her is the all-around title. Her 38.4 in the Glenbard West Sectional was the highest at any of the four sectionals.

“I feel like I can win it,” Leman said.

“I feel very strong, the most strong I’ve felt all season. I’m coming up and I’m working hard, and I’ve just felt very strong and my body’s feeling good. I feel like I can win.”

Morreale said Lauren Leman also should make a big impact on the team as a freshman – with Lauren Leman a force on the uneven bars. She was hurt for a chunk of the season and came back for the sectional, posting a 9.55 and finishing second only to her sister, Aleah Leman.

“That was part of our jump in score, putting her back in the lineup,” Morreale said. “She’s really come along on bars.

“Those freshmen, they’ve finally settled into the whole team concept,” he said. “I think they’ve gotten past being so nervous, and that’s helped settle them down a little bit.”

Sisler coming off strong summer in Canada

jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Things were backward for Northern Illinois senior Brian Sisler in Canada during the summer.

Playing for the Okotoks Dawgs in the offseason, the Huskies shortstop spent most of the short summer season playing second base before switching back to his normal position as NIU gears up for its 2016 season opener.

“There were some growing pains in the beginning, but I got pretty comfortable with it as the season went on,” said Sisler, a former star at DeKalb.

“Everything is sort of backward. Principals Next stay the same, but as far as footwork and flips, vs. Boston everything is opposite College, of what I’m used to.”

The hot stretch at the plate wasn’t an anomaly for Sisler, who provided a strong punch offensively last season for the Huskies, who finished 22-33 overall and 10-17 in the Mid-American Conference. He was second on the team in batting average (.309) and first in RBIs (32) and starts (51) and is likely the Huskies’ top returning batter.

“[Kunigonis] expects a lot of us,” Sisler said. “Everyone understands that on this team, that when you show up to a game or practice, you better be ready to go because Coach K is ready to go. I think now guys are adjusting.”

The Huskies open their season with a four-game series against Boston College at Camelback Ranch in Phoenix – starting with the season opener at 3 p.m. today.

Although Sisler returns after a nice season at the plate, he is far from the

only player coming back offensively for the Huskies. Their top five batters, in terms of batting average, come back.

They are Sisler, senior outfielder Stephen Letz (.310), senior catcher Tony Brander (.304), sophomore infielder Brad Wood (.281) and senior catcher Johnny Zubek (.256).

However, as a team, the Huskies hit only .252 on the season, scored six or more runs in 15 games compared to five or less in 40 contests.

“I think it’s always a mystery heading into the season,” Sisler said. “I think guys are confident, and Coach K is confident. A lot of guys are expecting more and more from themselves.”

On the mound, the Huskies graduated their top three starters and lost their lights-out closer, Andrew Frankenreider (1.69 ERA and nine saves in 26 appearances last season), to Tommy John surgery in the summer. However, Kunigonis said there are five pitchers vying for the four spots, with two of them – 6-foot-2 junior transfer Joe Hawks and 6-8 freshman William Anderson – looking solid so far.

Kunigonis said the other three competing for the spots are 6-1 senior Ryan Olson, 6-1 junior Aaron Rumfield and 5-11 sophomore Kevin Jones.

Hawks went 7-1 with a 3.09 ERA and 65 strikeouts in 602/3 innings last season for Iowa Central.

“We’re going to lean on him a little bit,” Kunigonis said. “He’s battle tested.”

Naegele returns as anchor behind the plate

It’s one of the perks of being a threeyear starter.

Naegele returns as an anchor behind the plate for the Huskies as they open the season with a doubleheader today in Boca Raton, Florida, against Florida A&M at 1:15 p.m. before playing Florida Atlantic at 3:30 p.m.

“I know them like the back of my hand,” Naegele said of the Huskies’ pitchers. “It’s the experience of catching four years in college.”

Along with her strong defense, Naegele hit .300 with six home runs and 39 RBIs last season for the Huskies, who finished 28-25 overall and 11-9 in the Mid-American Conference. It was a

“Naegele has been a game-changer for us, offensively and defensively, since Day 1,” coach Christina Sutcliffe said.

Sophomore Keegan Hayes returns to the circle after a strong freshman campaign in 2015. She went 15-10 with a team-best 2.75 ERA in 1522/3 innings. Although the Huskies lost Jessica Sturm to graduation, Sutcliffe said sophomore Tara Thacker likely will join Hayes as a starter. As a freshman last season, Thacker went 2-3 with a 4.75 ERA in 20 appearances, which included five starts.

Although the two starting pitchers are both sophomores, Hayes pointed at the Huskies’ experience behind the plate.

“It’s extremely comforting,” Hayes said of having Naegele. “She keeps us grounded, and if things aren’t going well, she calls time and gets the team back together.”

Offensively, senior first baseman Kayti Grable returns after a record-breaking season in which she hit .407 with 15 home runs and 48 RBIs. She was one of two home run hitters for the Huskies, as sophomore Alaynie Woollard hit 10 homers with 28 RBIs. Junior infielder Kali Kossakowski was third on the team in batting average (.315) and was tied for the lead in runs (34) with Grable.

CLEVELAND – LeBron James scored 25 points and barely missed a triple-double, Kevin Love added 15 points and 15 rebounds and the Cleveland Cavaliers looked refreshed from the All-Star break with a 10695 victory over the Bulls on Thursday night.

James had nine rebounds and nine assists in 35 minutes for the Cavs, who lost their first two matchups with the Bulls this season. But the Bulls are missing three key players because of injuries.

Dear Abby: My 16-year-old perfect kid came to us, very adult-like, saying it was time for her to go on the pill. We knew she had a boyfriend, but didn’t realize it was this serious.

Despite my initial impulse to kill him and stick my daughter in a convent, we discussed it as a family and agreed she would see a gynecologist. She also had a long talk with her mother about sex, and with me a few days later. When I sat down alone with her she was embarrassed, but I don’t care – I’m her father.

Fast forward to last week: She left her iPad in the living room, and while I was using it, up popped explicit pictures of her not only with her boyfriend, but with other guys and girls. Her mother and I talked about how to handle this. I suggested therapy and pulling her from school. My wife disagreed. She accused me of violating our daughter’s personal property and said it’s none of my business.

Women can’t drink as much as men Dear Dr. K: Can you explain why “moderate” drinking is defined differently for men and women? Is it because men tend to be heavier? Or is there more to it?

Dear Reader: Women are advised to drink less alcohol than men because they are much more vulnerable to alcohol’s harmful effects.

For example, research has found if a woman has more than one drink a day, she increases her risk of car accidents and other traumatic injuries. Her risk of high blood pressure, stroke, suicide and breast cancer goes up. And drinking more than one drink a day also increases the risk she will go on to abuse or become dependent on alcohol.

Women also tend to advance from their first drink to their first alcohol-related problem to the need for treatment more quickly than men.

Why are women more sensitive than men to the effects of alcohol? There are two main biological explanations. The first involves an enzyme called alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH). ADH breaks down alcohol, first in the stomach and then in the liver. Women have considerably less ADH in their stomach linings than men.

That means more alcohol leaves their stomach and is absorbed into their blood.

As a result, one drink for a woman has about twice the effect as one for a man.

Second, pound for pound, a woman’s body contains less water and more fatty tissue than a man’s. Water dilutes alcohol in the blood; fat retains it. So alcohol remains at higher concentrations for longer periods of time in a woman’s body.

This exposes her brain and other organs to more alcohol.

These factors also suggest why women are more likely to suffer adverse consequences after drinking less and for fewer years than men.

Most health professionals recommend no more than one drink a day for women and no more than two drinks a day for men. One standard drink is defined as 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine or 1.5 ounces of hard liquor.

For pregnant women, as a report recently released by the American Academy of Pediatrics confirmed, no amount of alcohol is safe.

Although it generally is true women tolerate alcohol less well than men, I can say from my own experience there are plenty of exceptions to this “rule.” I’ve known women who could drink most men under the table. My guess is they inherited an unusually efficient ADH enzyme. As a result, they rapidly break down alcohol in their stomach, and less alcohol gets into the blood. With less alcohol in the blood, there’s less that travels to the brain.

And I’ve known some men who get pretty silly after the first few sips. Although in several cases, it would be more accurate to say they get sillier than usual.

In addition, take the dummy into account. If it is balanced, there is usually no hurry to cash winners. But if it is unbalanced, threatening to give declarer discards on a good side suit and ruffs, speed is of the essence for the defense. Into which category does today’s deal fall?

If I had been North, I would have raised to three no-trump with that strong doubleton, but that contract would have failed also.

Against four spades, West leads a diamond and East takes dummy’s queen with his king. What next?

With such a balanced dummy, East should go passive, returning a diamond to get the entry off the board (or switch to a trump). Now the contract must fail. An active club shift by East backfires if South plays low from his hand.
