Deciding what to cover isn’t always straightforward, easy I like a heated discussion in the newsroom once in awhile.

So it was OK with me that we had one here Tuesday about how we would cover the planned visit to Northern Illinois University by Bishop James Dukes of the National Action Network.

Dukes is leader of the South Side Chicago chapter of the NAN, a national civil rights organization founded by the Rev. Al Sharpton.

Initially, I was skeptical when I read the news release. It brought up old claims about a noose that an NIU employee said he found in a drawer. The worker’s lawsuit that included this claim was filed in 2013 and has been dismissed, although it is being appealed.

The release also brought up the Black History Month assembly at DeKalb High School – a story that, frankly, I feel our community should move on from. Local leaders black and white also had communicated to the newspaper that they did not support this DeKalb mission by Dukes.

Frankly, I wasn’t wild about someone from Chicago parachuting in to tell our community its business, either. It felt a bit like grandstanding; I was inclined to ignore it altogether.

My colleagues, news editor Brett Rowland and reporter Rhonda Gillespie, ganged up on me to change my thinking, which they succeeded in doing with some effort.

People such as Bishop Dukes are professional advocates, and although some people might not agree with what they say, their motivation to promote racial equality is in the public good.

Yes, he and his organization might be outsiders, but that doesn’t mean they have nothing to add to the discussion. Besides, people from the community reached out to Dukes’ organization and asked for its help.

And people of color still sometimes have to put up with being called racial slurs – herein 2016, in DeKalb.

So Gillespie went to NIU. She talked to Bishop Dukes. If you missed her story in Wednesday’s print edition, you can see it online at Daily-Chronicle.com, along with the video she took. What I saw didn’t come off as grandstanding, or as any kind of big show.

It was a story, however. Not necessarily a big story, but one worth writing.

TODAY’S TALKER DOCUMENTS DETAIL HEBRON PRESIDENT’S NIGHT OF SMOKING CRACK COCAINE HEBRON – Hebron Village President John Jacobson was found unconscious in his bathroom wearing only his underwear after a night of smoking crack and drinking, police reports from the March 17 incident obtained by the Northwest Herald reveal.

Jacobson, 68, was charged Tuesday with possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a firearm without a valid FOID card and possession of ammunition following a 911 response to his

home on Thursday.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office provided documents that detail the night under a Freedom of Information Act request the Northwest Herald filed Monday after receiving a tip about the incident at Jacobson’s home.

When sheriff’s deputies responded to Jacobson’s home in the 12300 block of Jacob Avenue about 1 a.m. March 17, a woman – later identified as 27-year-old Jeanna Rosing – yelled at police and paramedics to hurry and follow her into the master bedroom, according to the reports.

NIU panel discusses impact of First Amendment on public dialogue

DeKALB – A Yale University professor and researcher told audience members at a community diversity discussion Wednesday that the Constitution grants the right to free speech, but not with impunity or without responsibility, he said.

“It is vitally important that we learn how to disagree without delegitimizing each other,” said Frederick M. Lawrence, who is considered an expert on civil rights, free expression and bias crimes.

Lawrence was part of a four-member panel that Northern Illinois University officials assembled to discuss the First Amendment, as part of the first in what is scheduled to be an on-

going series of community dialogues expected to center on diversity and inclusion.

“I hope that [the public] realizes that this is a place where we can come together and have honest dialogue ... that would advance us as a community, in terms of diversity and inclusion,” said Vernese Edghill-Walden, NIU’s chief diversity officer.

Plans to hold the public discussions were born out of a diversity task force that made recommendations to university leaders on how to meld the splintered resources on campus that help address issues of racial, ethnic, gender and cultural diversity, as well as inclusion.

DeKalb County police arrest 14 in drug sweep, 14 more wanted

ksmith@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Police have arrested 14 people, and 14 others still are wanted, after a countywide drug sweep, authorities said Wednesday.

DeKalb police worked with DeKalb County sheriff’s deputies, Sycamore police and the DeKalb County State’s Michael W. Attorney’s Office to seize Willard drugs including cocaine, LSD, methamphetamine, Xanax, MDMA, Adderall, marijuana and drug paraphernalia, according to a news release.

Most of the cases are unrelated, although authorities believe each person is part of a larger operation, Redel said.

• Stefania C. Gelazius, 22, of Chicago, charged with unlawful delivery of a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a park, unlawful delivery of a controlled substance within a 1,000 feet of a Sarah J. Riley school, unlawful delivery of a controlled substance, and unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

• Andrew D. Meinke, 22, of DeKalb, charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, Aliza R. unlawful possession of Patterson drug paraphernalia, and unlawful possession of marijuana.

• Zachary J. Willard, 22, of DeKalb, charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of Stacy A. marijuana with the InMuir tent to deliver, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and unlawful possession of marijuana.

• Aliza R. Patterson, 20, of DeKalb, charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

• Andrew J. Burright, Anthony 22, of DeKalb, charged Montes with possession of marijuana with intent to deliver, unlawful possession of marijuana and unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

• Trent S. Gosnell-Hill, 22, of DeKalb, Andrew D. charged with possession Meinke of marijuana with intent to deliver and unlawful possession of marijuana.

• A Waterman juvenile was charged with possession of marijuana Angelo J. with the intent to deliver Barone and unlawful possession of marijuana.

Ten people still are wanted on warrants.

Anyone with information about those who have not been arrested yet are asked to contact DeKalb police or DeKalb Zachary J. County Crime Stop- Willard pers at crimestoppers@ dekalbcounty.org. Police said those with active warrants include: • Michael P. Swikowski, 29, charged with possession of methamphetamine with the intent to deliver, possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia. Swikowski’s bond is set at $20,000.

• Nathan D. Juneau, 38, charged with possession of methamphetamine, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Juneau’s bond is set at $5,000.

• McKayla M. Harvey, 21, of DeKalb, charged with unlawful delivery of a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a school, unlawful delivery of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of a controlled substance. Harvey’s bond was set at $30,000.

• April R. Walker, 38, of DeKalb,

charged with unlawful delivery of a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a school, unlawful delivery of a controlled substance, and unlawful possession of a controlled substance. Walker’s bond is set at $20,000.

• Michale G. Casey, 32 of Chicago, charged with unlawful delivery of a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a park, unlawful delivery of a controlled substance, and unlawful possession of a controlled substance. Casey’s bond is set at $100,000.

• Nicholas K. Eischen, 23, of Port Barrington, charged with unlawful delivery of a controlled substance. Eischen’s bond is set at $10,000.

OBITUARIES LARRY E. BELLINGER

Born: July 19, 1940; in DeKalb, IL Died: March 21, 2016; in DeKalb, IL Larry E. “Gene” Bellinger, age 75, of DeKalb, died Monday, March 21, 2016, at home.

Born July 19, 1940, in DeKalb, the son of Albert and Golda (Baker) Bellinger.

Gene was a graduate of DeKalb High School Class of 1958, he was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was employed by General Electric in DeKalb for 25 years; was a member of American Legion Post 66; active in the Honor Guard, AmVets Post 90, and was also active in several community theaters including Stage Coach Players. Gene appeared in over 50 movies, 10 TV series, three made for TV movies, two commercials, and one music video. He was a member of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists and the Screen Actors Guild.

He is survived by his daughter, Tina Marie (Jeff) Jamison of Lisle; his former wife, Patricia Bellinger of DeKalb; several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Carol Joan Luoma; and his companion, Janet Hack.

The funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m.

Tuesday, March 29, 2016 at Anderson Funeral Home, DeKalb, with the Rev. Robert Vaughn of Malta Congregational Church officiating.

Burial will follow at Fairview Park Cemetery in DeKalb, with full military honors by DeKalb American Legion, AmVets and VFW Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until the time of services at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, at Anderson Funeral Home.

Born: May 2, 1949; in DeKalb, IL Died: March 21, 2016; in DeKalb, IL

Dale A. Terry, age 66, of DeKalb, passed away peacefully at home, Monday, March 21, 2016. He was born May 2, 1949, in DeKalb, the son of Robert W. and Harriet E. (Hart) Terry, Dale married Peggy D. Mummert on May 15, 1982 at First United Methodist Church in DeKalb.

Dale was a 1967 graduate of DeKalb High School and graduated from Northern Illinois University with a bachelor’s degree. Dale was a Civil Engineer for 40 years and was a Certified Land Surveyor. He was an avid Cubs fan and enjoyed all sports. Dale bowled in many DeKalb Area Bowling Leagues.

Also on the panel were Mark Cordes, the interim dean of NIU’s law school, and NIU student association members Timothy Brandner and Arielle Owens.

The discussion opened with three questions from King, then shifted to queries from the audience.

“The First Amendment means to me that I have to tolerate a lot of speech that I strongly dislike,” Cordes said in response to one of the questions. “Toleration, though, doesn’t mean silence.”

DeKALB – Officials from Kishwaukee College and Northern Illinois University recently signed an agreement to create a transfer program between the schools for students pursuing a technology degree.

The agreement allows Kishwaukee College students who are enrolled in the associate of applied science degree track in select programs to transfer to NIU and complete a Bachelor of Science degree in technology with an emphasis on applied manufacturing technology, according to a news release.

Camp Power leaders raise money in hopes of expanding program

DeKALB – Leaders behind the Camp Power initiative want to expand the scope of the project this summer and are raising money, including online at gofundme.com/supportcamppower, to move things forward.

The group wants to raise $25,000 to cover operating costs of the free summer camp program. For the past two years, Camp Power has been offered to children who live in University Village, a housing complex off north Annie Glidden Road with a high concentration of low-income residents. This year, officials hope to bring the program to the children in the Pleasant Street as well.

“I would really like to get the funding by early April,” said Mary Hess, one of Camp Power’s founders. “It will be used to serve both neighborhoods.”

The expansion still is in the early stages. Board members will meet in April with parents in the neighborhood to explore interest and determine the feasibility of the plan.

“We have to find out if it would be offered in the afternoon, in the morning, what the structure would be,” Hess said. “Funding is a big factor in how many days a week we can offer it and for what length in time.”

Some of the key goals for Camp Power have been to provide recreational and educational activities and lunch service for low-income children when school is out for summer. Positive outcomes in 2014 and 2015 included reduced crime in the University Village and increased physical activity and nutrition education for neighborhood children, officials have said.

Kishwaukee Family YMCA has control of the day-to-day logistics of running Camp Power, but is not funding the program, so fundraising is underway, Hess said. So far, donors have contributed a little more than $1,000 on a GoFundMe page for Camp Power, Hess said, and the group also plans to seek grant opportunities.

“We’re hoping to raise $25,000,” Hess said. “If 2,500 people donate $10 … I think it’s realistic.”

SYCAMORE – Crews have resumed work on the Coltonville Road bridge just west of Sycamore, but county highway officials still don’t know exactly when it will open to traffic.

Shaw Media to acquire Elburn, Sugar Grove weekly newspapers

Shaw Media, owner of the Daily Chronicle, is acquiring Kaneland Publications Inc., the publisher of the Elburn Herald and Sugar Grove Herald. The deal is expected to close the first week of April, the two companies announced Tuesday.

According to Shaw Media Vice President J. Tom Shaw, the acquisition is part of Shaw Media’s strategy to expand its weekly newspaper network in suburban Chicago.

Last June, Shaw acquired weekly newspapers in the suburban communities of Oswego, Yorkville, Plano and Sandwich. In October 2012, Shaw acquired 22 suburban Chicago weekly publications from GateHouse Media.

With the addition of the Elburn Herald and Sugar Grove Herald, Shaw will publish 31 weekly newspapers in the Chicago suburbs, as well as dailies in DeKalb, McHenry and Will counties.

IceHogs player suspended after ‘revenge porn’ charge

A Blackhawks prospect facing “revenge porn” charges in DeKalb County has been suspended from his team indefinitely, the team said Wednesday in a news release.

Garret Ross, 23, of the 6500 block of Springbrook Road, Rockford, is accused of using an explicit video of a woman to get revenge Garret Ross on her because he blamed her for his girlfriend breaking up with him, according to police reports.

Ross is a left-winger for the Rockford IceHogs, the Blackhawks’ AHL affiliate, and is in his third year with the organization. He was arrested in February and charged under Illinois’ “revenge porn” law, records show.

The Blackhawks said Wednesday the club became aware of the charges against Ross on Saturday afternoon.

CHICAGO – An alleged sex abuse victim of Dennis Hastert could testify about his emotional trauma next month at the former U.S. House speaker’s sentencing in his hush-money case, according to a transcript of an unannounced court hearing this week during which the court linked sexabuse allegations to the Illinois Republican for the first time.

Law firm to look at how Chicago police complaints are probed

CHICAGO – A law firm will conduct a six-month review of the Chicago civil oversight board that investigates police-involved shootings and complaints against officers, the head of the board said Wednesday.

Sharon Fairley, who runs the Independent Police Review Authority, acknowledged an audit is needed, since the board has upheld very few complaints in the nine years it has existed and only twice has determined that police shootings violated the department’s use-of-force policies.

Recently released transcripts of police interviews with Micheail Ward offer a glimpse into the tactics used by officers while investigating the death of Hadiya Pendleton, 15, the Chicago Tribune reported. She was killed a week after performing at President Barack Obama’s second inauguration in January 2013.

Documents show officers tried to use the national attention garnered by Pendleton’s death to convince Ward to speak after his arrest. One detective told Ward that Obama was aware of Hadiya’s slaying and that the FBI had offered to help with the investigation.

Durkin ruled that the two would be able to speak at the hearing if they choose and that the defense could question them if Hastert’s attorneys believe either has said something that is “factually incorrect.”

Jolene Burdge of Billings, Montana, told The Associated Press later Wednesday that she is the sister who intends to testify about sexual abuse against her brother, who died in 1995.

Burdge said her brother, Stephen Reinboldt, told her his first homosexual contact was with Hastert and that it lasted throughout his time at Illinois’ Yorkville High School. Hastert worked at the school from 1965 to 1981, teaching history and coaching wrestling.

Chicago files suits against State Charter Commission

CHICAGO – Chicago Public Schools officials said they have filed lawsuits over the Illinois State Charter School Commission’s decision to block plans to close three underperforming charter schools.

The lawsuits were filed Wednesday in Cook County and claim the commission is overstepping charter school law.

Schools CEO Forrest Claypool said the commission has “ignored its own academic standards” to keep underperforming schools open. He also called on state legislators to cut the commission’s power.

Earlier this month, the commission overturned the district’s closure plan. That changes how the schools are operated and funded by the state.

Critics have said the decision to close the schools came too quickly in the wake of policy changes.

Activist avoids more jail time for freeing mink, vandalism

CHICAGO – A judge has sentenced an animal rights activist to a year in a halfway house and on house arrest for vandalizing an Illinois fur farm and releasing more than 2,000 mink from cages.

U.S. District Judge Amy St. Eve on Monday also sentenced 27-year-old Tyler Lang of Los Angeles to three months’ time already served and ordered him to pay $200,000 to the couple who operated the farm in Morris.

Lang and 28-year-old Kevin Johnson of Los Angeles each pleaded guilty to conspiring to travel in interstate commerce with the purpose of damaging an animal enterprise. Johnson was sentenced last month to three years in federal prison.

Lang and Johnson were accused of vandalizing the farm and releasing the mink in August 2013. About 1,600 of the mink were recovered.

ANAHEIM, Calif. – A few miles from Disneyland is a place most tourists never see.

The signs along the thoroughfare suddenly switch to Arabic script advertising hookah shops, Middle Eastern sweets and halal meat.

At a run-down strip mall in the neighborhood known as Little Arabia, flags from a half-dozen Muslim countries flap in a stiff breeze. Flying above them is a giant American flag.

After Sen. Ted Cruz called for increased surveillance of Muslims in the U.S., many people in this community and others like it either challenged the Republican presidential candidate or dismissed his comments as mostly meaningless rhetoric.

Majd Takriti, 43, stopped to discuss Cruz’s remarks as he picked his mother up from a butcher shop. He said he took Cruz and rival Donald Trump with a grain of salt.

“A lot of what they say is to attract attention,” he said.

A block down the street, Jordanian native and 44-year U.S. resident Wathiq Bilbeisi slurped on lentil soup during his break at a Jordanian restaurant. He seemed mystified by the concern among some non-Muslim Americans about the candidates’ comments.

“The politicians, they want to say whatever the constituents want to hear. I don’t think they mean what they say, and in the end, they’ll have to come to terms with themselves,” he said.

Bilbeisi wasn’t worried about the GOP seeking major changes to U.S. law.

“When they go to Congress to get laws to watch the Muslims, nobody’s going to do anything about it,” he said.

“It’s against American values.”

At a nearby hookah shop displaying pipes in a rainbow of colors, employee Guss Zayat questioned whether IS members were true Muslims.

“They are killing more Muslims than anyone else in this world. They are killing children. They are killing

Christians and Muslims in our home countries,” said Zayat, who came to America from Beirut about three years ago. Politicians “should know the difference between ISIS and Islam.”

Cruz’s statement on Tuesday came hours after the deadly attacks at the Brussels airport and a subway station that killed dozens of people and wounded many more. The Islamic State militant group claimed responsibility.

He said law enforcement should be empowered to “patrol and secure Muslim neighborhoods before they become radicalized.” Echoing earlier statements from Trump, Cruz also said the U.S. should stop the flow of refugees from countries where the Islamic State has a significant presence.

In Washington, Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates was asked Wednesday at a news conference about calls to step up patrols of Muslim communities. She said the Muslim community “is one of our greatest partners in our fight against terrorism and public safety generally.”

Costly turnover, but no clarity, at DeKalb Park District There’s been turnover at the top at the DeKalb Park District in the past three years, and it hasn’t been cheap.

Since 2013, the park district has had five different leaders. It has paid a total of more than $116,000 to two of them after they and the park district parted ways.

The churn began when Cindy Capek ended her nearly seven-year tenure in May 2013 after three new board members were elected and wanted to change direction.

Capek was paid her $116,000 annual salary for six months after leaving the district; during that time, two administrative employees earned extra pay, and one served as interim director.

In January 2014, another interim leader was hired to serve on a part-time basis for several months. Meanwhile, the park district agreed to pay a search firm up to $16,000 to find a permanent replacement.

That search ended when Jason Mangum was hired with a two-year contract that began in June 2014, with an annual salary of $116,000.

He served just under 21 months of that deal before being placed on leave in February and eventually resigning. He will continue to be paid through September, and receive an extra month’s car payment and other perks. Superintendent of Recreation Amy Doll is taking over as interim director.

Park board members have provided no details on why Mangum, whom they chose after searching far and wide less than two years ago, is no longer the right fit. The most the public has received by way of explanation was from Park Commissioner Dag Grada, who said “We’re trying to get a park district that works.”

The public wants that, too. What’s not working? Why couldn’t the park board work with the person it only recently hired? And how many more times will taxpayers have to pay administrators for months after they have resigned?

The park board’s two main duties are to hire and supervise the executive director and to set policy. The continuing turnover in the top job invites questions as to how well it is doing.

Yes, board members are limited in what they can say about personnel matters. But even when Capek was dismissed, board President Phil Young told the Daily Chronicle that the new members, himself included, wanted to go in a different direction.

Mangum was their pick. Why is he gone, and how will things be better now?

Whenever the board wants to fill us in on what comes next, the public is listening.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Stop running down socialism

To the Editor: I will need to consider alternate climes if I continue to hear people (even the pundits) refer to the “socialism” of Sen. Bernie Sanders with a negative connotation.

The Oxford English Dictionary defines socialism as: a political and economic theory of social organization that advocates that the means of production, distribution and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole.

How is this a negative idea? Hmm. Are equitability and fairness really so scary to people? These are concepts that this American has longed for and strived for her whole life.

Didn’t most of us go to public school? Socialism. Gonna exchange that for all private schools, now?

Going to pay THAT baby sitter?

Most of us know someone on Social Security, if we aren’t on Social Security ourselves. That’s socialism. It’s right there in the name, folks! Going to pluck Granny from her services and take her in on your abundant budget?

If you have driven anywhere, you are riding on a truly socialistic con-

cept, people. Going to just permanently park those cars now?

I could go on, but I hope folks begin to get the point that “socialism” isn’t scary. It is what the majority of people really want and how most of us live. So, knock it off, already.

Stop taking the GOP and tea party’s poisoned bait on this thing.

Ask most of the civilized world what they think about our medical system compared to their socialized versions.

Am I the only one looking at the astronomical costs of my medical care and insurance? I know I am not the only one who supports Sanders based on his wanting “universal health care” alone.

We can only move forward with an educated and clear-minded electorate. Let’s go. Let’s get involved and begin to hone and enrich those “socialistic” programs to do everyone even more good.

Local seniors not going hungry To the Editor: I wish to respond to Dan Kenney’s

letter of March 15 (“When the elephants fight, the grass is trampled”).

Kenney mentions an elderly gentleman with two canes who walked away hungry from the Grove Street Senior Center. That man is a regular at the Grove Street site and at the Sycamore Senior Center.

If he walked away hungry he didn’t walk far because he drives a GMC pickup.

Apparently Kenney is not aware the Voluntary Action Center serves lunch at the Grove Street site every Wednesday and Friday. On Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, the seniors are bused (via VAC) down to the high-rise on Taylor Street for lunch.

If some people don’t care to go to the high-rise, they can order a meal from Feed’em Soup, and it will be picked up.

So it’s not likely that this elderly man went home “hungry.”

It is sad that the governor and Speaker Madigan can’t come to an agreement on the budget. But Kenney also should do less assuming.

None of this exists in today’s Cuba, and the real question about Obama’s thaw with the nation is whether serious change will come any sooner – or at all – because of his rapprochement.

Obama admonished Castro, “You need not fear the different voices of the Cuban people – and their capacity to speak, and assemble, and vote for their leaders.” He described American democracy as imperfect but reminded the Cuban people and their ruler that its strength is open debate. “It’s healthy,” he said. “I’m not afraid of it.” Castro clearly is.

Obama met privately with a group of dissidents, many of whom have felt the United States ignored them in recent months as it made concession

after concession without winning any reduction in Cuba’s assault on human rights. Among those he met were Berta Soler, leader of the Ladies in White, a group that was formed by relatives of victims of a regime crackdown more than a decade ago; and Antonio Rodiles, a courageous exponent of democracy who has been detained and beaten for his views. Dozens of other political dissenters were not present because they are still in prison.

A truculent Castro responded to a serious question about political prisoners by asking, “What political prisoners?”

Before Obama arrived, protesters were again detained; the Internet remains highly restricted; political plurality does not exist.

Obama insisted he was not seeking regime change, hailed Cuba’s education and health systems and lavished praise on Cuba’s entrepreneurs.

He left much unsaid about the overweening socialist system, the ubiquitous secret police and the regime that still dominates so much of Cuban life. Will the regime be enhanced or undermined by Obama’s policy shift?

Does the effective end of the embargo give a lift to Cuba’s rulers, or infect the population with a yearning to throw off the suffocating diktat?

The real test of Obama’s thaw is not to be found in the pomp and circumstance of his visit, but in whether it leads to a Cuba that is freer and more open after Air Force One has departed.

If Trump is the nominee – and it’s getting hard to imagine he will be denied – I find it unlikely that he will pick up enough Democratic votes to compensate for his losses among Republicans and independents. I suspect that far from dropping him like a rock, as Mitch McConnell suggested, many GOP office-holders will paper over their differences with Trump as the path of least resistance (always the first option in politics, no?). They can always trash him after November to reclaim their dignity.

There has been speculation for years now that the GOP would only reorient itself toward the center after nominating a hard-right conservative and then watching the electorate reject such a nominee. More mainstream and moderate Republicans then would be able to say, “See, we told you so,” and begin pushing the party back to the center. I confess it sounded plausible to me.

But even if Trump is nominated and crashes, he robs moderate Republicans of that argument. The right wing will still be able to say, “If only we had nominated a true conservative ... .”

It might be the worst possible outcome: The party crashes, yet the central conflicts remain unresolved. What, though, if Cruz sneaks through to claim the nomination?

Ponnuru: I think that Republicans

would have a higher chance of winning in November with Cruz than with Trump, but with a lower variance in outcomes -- because Trump is, of course, a bit of a wild card.

In part that’s because Cruz would have significantly more support from Republican voters and officeholders than Trump would. Some Republican politicians would worry that Cruz was leading them to defeat: They have been warning as much for a long time. But those politicians would not feel a great need to distance themselves from him, any more than congressional Republicans felt they had to take explicit steps to separate themselves from Bob Dole in 1996 even though they knew he would lose.

If Clinton has a large lead over Trump, and especially if she builds one early, they will be much more likely to abandon him.

But as long as we’re speculating, let me ask you a question: Can you see a plausible scenario where Democrats lose the White House this fall?

Wilkinson: Can I imagine trouble for a relatively unpopular Democratic nominee who’s saddled with dynastic baggage, nettlesome investigations and a cohort of impassioned enemies who have been trying to destroy her for more than two decades? Why, yes, I believe I can.

President Barack Obama concluded his groundbreaking trip to Cuba with a speech to the island’s people that celebrated democracy in the presence of Raúl Castro, leader of a decaying system of authoritarianism and control.

A bright future for Cuba, Obama declared, “depends on the free and open exchange of ideas.” He said that “citizens should be free to speak their mind without fear,” and free “to organize, and to criticize their government, and to protest peacefully, and that the rule of law should not include arbitrary detentions of people who exercise those rights.”

He added, “And yes, I believe voters should be able to choose their governments in free and democratic elections.”

MAPLE PARK – Lousy weather for a game against a budding rival wasn’t enough to slow down the Kaneland girls soccer team Tuesday, as the Knights beat Rosary, 4-0, to roll to their fourth straight win to open the season.

The game was played in sub-40 degree temperatures with strong wind and a steady drizzle. The Knights (4-0) opened the scoring with a goal from Holly Collingbourne, assisted by Kiandra Powell in the 13th minute.

Collingbourne added an assist on the Knights’ third goal, finding Lauren Ortiz left of the goal for a score in the 66th minute. Then two minutes later, Taylor Zitkus came up with her second assist of the game, hitting Paige Guyton with a pass also to the left side that went off Rosary goalkeeper Julia Issacs’ hands.

“We started out a little slow because of the weather and some other factors,” Collingbourne said. “But we started doing good in catching, passing and finishing our goals. So the end result was good.”

In the 54th minute, Zitkus played the ball ahead to Powell, who had surged past the defense for Kaneland’s second goal.

Rosary (0-3) couldn’t do much on offense, as the Knights dominated on defense. The Royals had back-to-back free kicks late in the first half, the final one from just beyond the box, but Kaneland goalie Anna Chapman dove to her left for the save.

The Knights have not surrendered a goal this year, outscoring their opponents 22-0, as they head into a break.

They have almost two weeks off before facing DeKalb to begin Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference play.

However, the defense really hasn’t been tested as the Knights have dominated time of possession.

Coach Scott Parillo said the back line soon will be tested with games against DeKalb, Sycamore and a tough tournament field at the Pepsi Challenge in April.

“When we lose possession, we’re winning it right back, so we’re not having to rely on our defense,” Parillo said.

“We will, though, because the games are going to get tougher.”

For the second time in three games, the Knights forced the other team’s goalkeeper into more than 20 saves – they attacked the net relentlessly at home Saturday against Belvidere.

“It wasn’t going to be pretty, and we knew it,” Parillo said. “Their goalie made some good saves. We’re peppering these goalies, and I think we just have to put it in better spots.”

The Knights topped the Royals last year for their first regional title – Rosary had defeated the Knights in regional finals in 2010, 2011, 2013 and 2014.

The Royals have started this year in a slump and still are looking for their first goal. They are off until Tuesday when they head to Oswego East.

“We knew they were going to come out tough because of how we beat them,” Collingbourne said. “We had to make sure they didn’t score on us quickly or anything.”

After topping the Royals in 2015, the Knights made it all the way into the supersectional round. Collingbourne said she hopes the Knights can keep up the Kaneland’s Gabrielle Cano cuts in front of Rosary’s Sonja Popovich during the second half momentum when it heads to DeKalb on April 5.

Knights out slugged by Vikings

editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – Kate Geary is wearing the number her older sister, Anna, wore on the Geneva softball team when she was named All-Upstate Eight Conference first team three times.

However, one game into the Vikings’ 2016 campaign, Kate Geary is already blazing her own trail. Her stellar defensive play helped the Vikings top Kaneland, 11-9, in a cold, wet and windy six-inning slugfest Wednesday that was shortened due to darkness.

Geary made a running catch on a deep, bases-loaded drive to center field

by Kaneland’s Mary Clausen with two outs in the top of the fifth inning to keep the game tied at nine. On a ball over her head, Geary was able to turn and haul the ball in, ending the inning. Kaneland had already scored four runs in the inning and would have likely scored three more without Geary’s heroics.

“I was able to get a good read on it,” Geary said. “It was an excellent feeling to make the catch. … I knew they were good hitters.”

Geneva coach Greg Dierks couldn’t speak highly enough of Geary’s catch.

“That’s the defensive play of the game,” he said “They already had four runs in.

That would have made it seven. That wound up being the difference for us.”

Geary, a sophomore, took over ownership of the No. 7 Geneva jersey after her sister graduated and headed to Miami (Ohio) to play softball. Offensively, Kate Geary added a double, single, two runs scored and reached base once via error.

“It was great to win our first game of the year,” Geary said.

Kaneland coach Mike Kuefler was pleased with his squad’s offensive production in difficult weather.

“Geneva is one of the best hitting teams in the area, and we were able to go toe-to-toe with them all game,” Kuefler said.

DeKalb holds off Harlem to stay perfect

By JAMES HIGH sports@daily chronicle.com DeKALB – Despite a late offensive push by Harlem, the DeKalb soccer team held on for a 2-1 victory Wednesday in DeKalb to move to 2-0 on the season.

“The biggest thing that we got done today was having 20 players,” Barbs coach P.J. Hamilton said. “Twenty players that looked outside today and smiled, and 20 players that embraced the weather and everything else about this game.”

It was cold, rainy and windy at DeKalb High School throughout the

match. DeKalb’s Hanna Hickey got the Barbs on top with a goal at the 21:04 mark of the first half. Harlem struck an equalizer at 10:50, and the score remained tied at halftime.

In the second half, Caitlyn Hottsmith put DeKalb back on top at the 31:40 mark with a goal that slipped through the hands of the Harlem goalkeeper, a testament to the wind and rain. The Barbs maintained their 2-1 lead throughout the half, until Harlem began to push back.

The Huskies had multiple outstanding chances, but DeKalb goalkeeper Meghan Hanson made several spectacular saves, securing the Barbs’ victory.

“We wanted to get the ball wide and use some of our talent out wide,” Hamilton said. “I thought we were able to do a really good job of that in the second half. And our creativity up top got some things going in the second half that gave us a good chance.”

As for the Barbs 2-0 start this season, Hamilton credits the defense.

“We’re really proud of the way our back four has been defending,” Hamilton said. “We’ve given up only one goal in two matches, so our back four is really keeping us in matches.”

The Barbs hosts Boylan on Tuesday, looking to keep their season perfect.

NIU Steel Band to perform benefit concert

he Northern Illinois University steelpan ensemble is set to bring the sounds of percussion to St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sycamore with a benefit concert April 3.

Steelpan music originated in Trinidad and Tobago, which is where co-director Cliff Alexis grew up. He has been working at NIU for almost 30 years now.

“That’s my life,” he said, of playing steel pan. “I grew up with it. I startIf you go ed when I was 16.”

Chopp first tried her hand at the steel drum at a summer camp when she was in high school, which is where she first met Alexis and heard about the program at NIU. “This is a really unique program,” she said. “I have an interest in world music and I really love the instrument.”

The 35-member band will perform a benefit concert in Sycamore on April 3, hosted by the Cardiac-Pulmonary Rehabbers support group as a fundraiser for Kishwaukee Hospital Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation. The goal of the group is to assist patients with financial need.

Percussion offers a chance to play diverse music on unique instruments, which is one of the things Chopp said she enjoys.

“We play all sorts of styles,” she said. “It’s not limited in any way.”

High school concert to benefit hospice DAILY CHRONICLE

The community is invited to the fifth annual Transformation Through Rhythm benefit concert at 2 p.m. April 10, in the DeKalb High School auditorium.

The concert will feature the DeKalb High School Percussion Ensemble, the Northern Illinois University Percussion Ensemble and the Harambee African Percussion Ensemble. Admission is free; donations are appreciated.

The annual Transformation Through Rhythm concert is an opportunity to bring diverse performers and audience members together to celebrate community, service and music. The free performance supports both the music therapy program at KishHealth System Hospice, which is largely supported through grants and donations, and its sister hospice, Knysna-Sedgefield Hospice in Knysna, South Africa.

Proceeds from last year’s concert helped bring food relief to needy hospice patients and their families in Knysna who live in harsh conditions and extreme poverty and where the economic climate is making it increasingly difficult to secure food donations.

The idea of twinning originated after World War I and increased substantially after World War II with the need for countries to work toward peace and reconciliation. In the hospice context, it was established in an effort to foster mutually beneficial relationships by promoting idea-sharing, educational opportunities, and profession-

al exchanges between Sub-Saharan African hospices and hospices abroad.

Hospice programs in the U.S. are encouraged to raise funds to assist their partners financially. Help is particularly important with the continued HIV/AIDS epidemic that kills more than 6,300 people daily in Sub-Saharan Africa.

NIU’s Opera Theatre presents Sondheim’s ‘A Little Night Music’ DAILY CHRONICLE As the finale to its season, Northern Illinois University Opera Theatre, in collaboration with the NIU Philharmonic and the NIU School of Theatre and Dance, will present Stephen Sondheim’s “A Little Night Music.”

Performances are at 8 p.m. April 1, and 3 p.m. April 3, in the Boutell Memorial Concert Hall in the Music Building, 400 Lucinda Ave. on the NIU campus.

“A Little Night Music” is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Hugh Wheeler. Inspired by the Ingmar Bergman film “Smiles of a Summer Night,” it

involves the romantic lives of several couples. Its title is a literal English translation of the German name for Mozart’s Serenade No. 13 for strings in G major, Eine kleine Nachtmusik.

The musical includes the popular song “Send in the Clowns.”

The music director is Lucia Matos, NIU School of Music faculty, and stage director is Anthony Perrella, NIU School of Theatre and Design.

Two local groups will benefit from the Bob Stromberg comedy show on April 9 at the Egyptian Theatre: Make a Difference DeKalb County/Feed My Starving Children and Network of Nations.

For more than 30 years, Bob Stromberg has been delighting audiences of all ages with his blend of standup, story and shtick. Always clean, his presentation is a blend of comedy and encouragement.

Stromberg has been a featured and favorite emcee for many large stadium and arena gatherings. He is known by many for his appearances on the awarding-winning TV comedy “Bananas.” He coauthored and Bob starred in the hit theatrical production “Tri- Stromberg ple Espresso,” which grew to 10 casts and has been seen by more than 2 million people in 60 cities from Seattle to London.

Stromberg is presented by Hillcrest Covenant Church, which has been bringing clean comedy to the area for 14 years. He will appear at 7:30 p.m. April 9 at the Egyptian Theatre, 135 N. Second St. in DeKalb.

28 Diabetes treatment protocol changes Dear Dr. K: In a recent column you said doctors are not trying to lower blood sugar as much as they used to in people with diabetes.

My husband’s doctor always tells him “lower is better” when it comes to his blood sugar.

Can you explain?

Dear Reader: When I was in medical school, and for many years thereafter, “lower is better” was what doctors believed. We knew people with diabetes could develop severe, even fatal, complications if their blood sugar got very high. Plus, we had powerful blood-sugar-lowering treatments available.

On the other hand, there was a limit to “lower is better.” Too much of a good thing could be a bad thing: Overtreatment could push blood sugars too low – dangerously low.

Sustained very low blood sugar can produce confusion, coma and death. So we measured blood sugars frequently, with the goal of having blood sugar as low as it could go without causing bothersome symptoms.

That was the goal because studies many years ago had shown such “intensive treatment” reduced some types of complications of diabetes. Doctors speak of two types of complications of diabetes, both involving blood vessels. The first is disease of small blood vessels (called microvascular complications), which affects the eyes, kidneys and nerves. The second is disease of the large blood vessels (called macrovascular complications), which causes heart disease, strokes and peripheral artery disease.

An analysis of randomized trials involving almost 35,000 people with diabetes found intensive treatment had a benefit: It led to a more than 10 percent reduction in small blood vessel complications.

Most doctors assumed if intensive treatment lowered small blood vessel complications, it also would lower large blood vessel complications. However, over the past 40 years, the evidence has been quite mixed.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff Many studies show people with higher blood sugars are more likely to have large blood vessel complications, such as heart attacks and strokes. So you might think intensive lowering of blood sugar would reduce the rates of large blood vessel complications.

But that’s not necessarily true.

The way to see if it is true is through large, randomized trials. In these studies, some people with diabetes (chosen at random) were given intensive treatment that kept their blood sugars very low. Others were treated less intensively and had higher blood sugars. These studies all have abbreviated names. The best known are VADT, ACCORD and ADVANCE. Unfortunately, these trials did not demonstrate a benefit from intensive treatment compared to less intensive treatment. And more patients in the intensive treatment group have suffered from the complications of blood sugar that is too low. Worst of all, in one of the studies (ACCORD), the rates of premature death from heart disease and from all causes were higher in the intensive treatment group. Too much of a good thing might have been fatal. One possible reason is the low blood sugar may have triggered a dangerous heart rhythm.

So, while lowering blood sugar with treatment definitely improves health, there are limits. Today, I and many other doctors do not treat blood sugar as intensively as we used to.

Initially South started with four spade losers, but how many spades does North hold? Given the opponents’ bids, it must be one or zero.

South can ruff most of those losers on the board. This makes his hand much stronger than the basic 14 high-card points. He might jump to four hearts, but perhaps North has values wasted in diamonds. It is better for South to rebid three clubs, a game-try.

Here, North, with all of his points in the rounded suits and that useful-looking spade singleton, should have no qualms in jumping to four hearts, despite holding only six highcard points.

West leads the spade ace, then shifts to a trump. South can win in his hand, ruff a spade on the board, and, if greedy, cross to his hand with a club, ruff another spade, play a club to his hand, draw trumps, and claim an overtrick.

It is tough, but East-West would do well to sacrifice in four spades doubled, which costs only 500.
