hen American film pioneer Edwin S. Porter wrote and directed 1903’s “The Great Train Robbery,” neither he nor the burgeoning film industry could have predicted the impact that the short film would have on action cinema as a whole. One hundred and twenty-three years later, “The Great Train Robbery” has been remade, reimagined and re-adapted numerous times, and the heist film has become a genre unto itself, boasting such films as “The Italian Job” (1969 and 2003), “Set It Off” (1996) and “The Bank Job” (2003), as well as the original “Ocean’s 11” (1960), starring the Rat Pack, and the film’s 2000s-era reboot franchise starring George Clooney (“The American,” 2010) and Brad Pitt (“Fight Club,” 1999), among others. Heist stories have even made their way into longer-format pieces — think Netflix’s “Lupin” (25 episodes) or “Money Heist” (41 episodes), for example. But this fall, a fresh heist story takes TV viewers all the way to Switzerland because Switzerland, after all, is where all the best banks are. “12 12 12,” a new eight-episode heist series starring MCU actor Anthony Mackie (“The Falcon and the Winter Soldier”), makes its two-episode premiere Friday, Nov. 13, on Apple TV. Mackie stars as Special Agent Jack Strickland, who, according to the series trailer, “believe[s] in revenge” and has selected a professional thief named Paul Galvin (Jamie Dornan, “The Fall”) as the well-deserving object of his ire. “Each episode of ‘12 12 12’ unfolds across three timelines of a heist: the 12 months of planning, the 12 hours of the heist and the 12 days following it,” explains the Apple TV plot description. “The series follows a disgraced FBI agent (Mackie) and an American career criminal (Dornan) as they play a zero-sum game of cat and mouse across Europe. At the center of it all is the daring, epic raid on a bank vault deep beneath the streets of Zurich.” Adding to the official press release details, Collider.com writer Amanda M. Castro elaborated in an article released this past August: “The show’s structure gives the series plenty of room to explore the preparation and fallout that usually get compressed into a few scenes, while still delivering the elaborate robbery at the center of the story. ... The year leading up to the robbery allows the series to dig into how an operation of this scale comes together, while the hours during the heist can deliver the inevitable pressure-cooker thrills. Then comes the part most heist stories tend to rush through: what happens once the job is over.” “12 12 12” also plays with the structure of the standard heist tale in that all three periods of

This non-traditional narrative also helps to create both anticipation and a sense of involvement for the viewer as they piece together the details alongside Strickland and his foe. The series serves as a reunion for Dornan and Mackie, who previously worked together in the 2019 psychological horror film “Synchronic.” When compared to “12 12 12,” “Synchronic” showcased a very different kind of relationship between the two actors, who portrayed New Orleans paramedics who face personal tragedies and respond to a series of bizarre deaths courtesy of a deadly designer drug. Directed by iconic cosmic horror duo Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead (“The Endless,” 2017), “Synchronic” is also responsible for properly introducing Dornan to New Orleans, Mackie’s hometown. “It’s one of those places people talk about with this fevered joy,” Dornan told Entertainment Weekly reporter Rosy Cordero in an October 2020 interview. “I loved it so much, the people, the food, and the energy of it.”

But, as of writing, no news has been shared on how Dornan (or Mackie) felt about filming in Budapest, Hungary, which served as Zurich’s standin city for Apple’s “12 12 12.” Principal photography reportedly began in the city in May 2025 despite many scenes having been dressed up for Christmas, calling to mind the show’s finale date of Dec. 25. “The production transformed St. Stephen’s Basilica and its surrounding square into a festive winter landscape — complete with artificial snow, a large Christmas tree and extensive holiday decorations — for scenes set during the Christmas season,” reports MovieWalks.com, a Dutch website which lists filming locations for popular film and television series. “TikTok users and local fans spotted Mackie in front of the basilica as the winter scene was being filmed. “Dornan had shot similar holiday scenes in Budapest’s 6th District earlier, near Andrássy Avenue, where streets were dressed in Christmas ornaments and artificial snow to match the festive heist backdrop,” continues the write-up.
Other filming locations include Sopron, Hungary and Austin, Texas. Jack Kesy (“Hellboy: The Crooked Man,” 2024), Agathe Rousselle (“Titane,” 2021), Kali Reis (“True Detective”), Sallie Harmsen (“Blade Runner 2049,” 2017), José Garcia (“Now You See Me,” 2013) and Ólafur Darri Ólafsson (“Severance”) also appear in “12 12 12,” while Emmynominated Canadian filmmaker Kari Skogland (“The Falcon and the Winter Soldier”) directs four of the season’s eight episodes. Ellen Kuras (“The Umbrella Academy”) and Takeshi Fukunaga (“Shogun”) likewise spend time behind the camera, directing episodes 3 and 4 and episodes 5 and 6, respectively. Catch “12 12 12” (if you can). The Apple TV series premieres Friday, Nov. 13.

Mysteries haunt a stranded ship in ‘Icebreaker’ By Sarah Passingham TV Media
A
long winter can test anyone’s sanity. Surviving long spans of time without feeling the warmth of the sun, packing on layers to leave the house and hibernating for warmth during winter months are a few realities for those of us blessed to live in regions with four seasons. Farther north, the seasons stretch, giving residents polar night and midnight sun, depending on the season. For days on end in wintertime, there is no sunrise in parts of northern Finland, the landscape lit only by sparkling snow. In the darkness, even mundane things can get weird. A new thriller boards a spooky stranded ship with “Icebreaker,” premiering Tuesday, Nov. 10, on streamer MHz Choice. The Finnish series, subtitled in English, stars Jessica Grabowsky (“Thicker Than Water”) as Sanna Tanner, a coast guard officer who encounters a stalled icebreaker ship that’s failed to respond to communications. The first two episodes of the six-episode season will be available to stream on premiere day, with new episodes dropping weekly on Tuesdays. Tanner hops aboard the I/B Aura with her rescue team and is met with a group of tense crew members. Haunted by mysterious events, Tanner and her team spend the longest, darkest solstice night trying to rescue the tormented icebreaker crew before they all fall victim to the eerie darkness on the ship. “Icebreaker” also stars Seidi Haarla (“Agent Hamilton”) as Laura Hongisto; Johannes Holopainen (“Enemy of the People”) as Peter Pohjanranta; Riitta Havukainen (“The Paradise”) as Helena Antola; Eero Milonoff (“Cry Wolf”) as Eemil Kauranen; Roderick Kabanga (“Dance Brothers”) as Toni Muurikka; and Mona Kortelampi (“Syke”) as Jaana Pohjaranta. The series was created by Mia Ylönen (“Codename: Annika”), who also served as head writer, and directed by Pete Riski (“Renki”). Tuuli Kanervankallio (“Tove,” 2020) and Nuutti Sihvonen (“Hotel Swan Helsinki”) wrote for the mystery thriller. In the official trailer for the upcoming series, Tanner starts off observing the icebreaker in the bright, misty daylight, but things turn dark, cold, wet and green-tinted as soon as she reaches the ship. Something is just not right. She gets a frosty welcome from the shivering members of the ship, coming face to face with a flare gun, before learning that one of the crew is responsible for their current state — Eemil. After an exiled crew member is found alive but worse for wear from the cold, Tanner has questions about the events that led to the ship becoming stranded in the first place. She orders a full search of the whole ship, and it is not clear which, if any, of the icebreaker’s crew members are trustworthy enough to get the complete story

Figures appear in the shadows, their rescue resources fail them and Tanner and her team must try to understand the madness that’s taken hold of the I/B Aura. With members of the ship disappearing, Tanner’s rescue mission becomes desperate as the darkness creeps closer with the polar night. “Icebreaker” is about to make its debut on MHz Choice for North American audiences, but the Finnish suspense series has been broadcast already in Europe. The show made a splash at Cannes in 2024, earning the MipDrama Coup de Coeur award as part of the film festival’s TV slate. Variety reported at the time that Ylönen accepted the award in person, saying in her speech, “I think the combination of a unique location — a contained, claustrophobic icebreaker — mixed with an eerie sense of dread in the otherwise beautiful frozen landscape is the key pull in our series. And it never hurts to have a complex and nuanced female character leading the show!” In another 2024 Variety interview with the series creator, Ylönen explained what elements were important in building the tone of “Icebreaker,” saying, “there are no ghosts and no zombies, but we wanted to bring in this mythological element and give it a new spice in terms of creating a thriller in the Nordics. We don’t want to go: ‘There is snow, there is darkness, there are people in trouble again.’ We don’t want to go the usual route. We want to add something extra.” A thriller set during polar night with supernatural elements might bring to mind “True Detective: Night Country,” the fourth season of the HBO anthology crime drama, starring Jodi Foster (“Nyad,” 2023) and Kali Reis (“Resident Evil,” 2026), set in a fictional Alaskan town. If you’ve been missing that creepy cold feeling since that show’s 2024 finale, you just might want to check out “Icebreaker” for an eerie winter fix.

Grab your dance shoes and holy water because “The Body” premieres Wednesday, Nov. 11, on Netflix. At a Catholic school, the Lions have perfected the art of praying hard and sinning harder, but their latest initiation threatens to turn their lives upside down. Led by captains Anya (Kristina Bogic, “Playing Gracie Darling”) and Elise (Sara Boustany, “PEN15”), the dance squad welcomes new recruit Grace (Sofia Wylie, “The Map That Leads to You,” 2025) with a drug-fueled ritual meant to secure their place at regionals. Their invocation of the Prince of Darkness takes a disturbing turn, and soon strange events ripple through the school. As the girls begin experiencing prophetic visions, the town is swept into mass hysteria, leaving the Lions scrambling to understand what they have unleashed and what they must keep hidden. Drawing inspiration from ’90s and Y2K teen movies and erotic thrillers — including “Carrie” (1976), “Jennifer’s Body” (2009), “Heavenly Creatures” (1994) and “Mean Girls” (2004) — the series is created and directed by Quinn Shephard (“Not Okay,” 2022), who also serves as showrunner. In Hawaii, she explores the tiki culture behind her grandmother’s restaurant, then faces the pressure of a professional restaurant in Los Angeles’ Chinatown. It all builds up to an opening night meant to revive her family’s legacy, with her grandmother among the diners.
Cupid’s aim has never been deadlier as “Heart Eyes” arrives Sunday, Nov. 8, on Hulu. For years, a masked killer has haunted cities across America by slaughtering couples on Valentine’s Day, and this time, the bloodshed arrives in Seattle. Ally McCabe (Olivia Holt, “Totally Killer,” 2023), a designer at a jewelry company, is fresh off a breakup and facing heat at work for an ad about doomed couples in the wake of the killings. When her boss, Crystal Cane (Michaela Watkins, “Casual”), pairs her with advertising consultant Jay (Mason Gooding, “Scream VI,” 2023), their first meeting gets off to a rocky start, but a kiss soon puts them in the Heart Eyes killer’s sights. Gigi Zumbado (“Bridge and Tunnel”), Jordana Brewster (“The Fast and the Furious,” 2001) and Devon Sawa (“Final Destination,” 2000) also star in this horror comedy from director Josh Ruben (“Werewolves Within,” 2021). Christopher Landon, son of the late actor, producer and director Michael Landon (“Little House on the Prairie”), serves as a writer and producer on the film, bringing experience from horror franchises such as Paranormal Activity and Happy Death Day.

By Adam Thomlison TV Media Q: Why does Jimmy Kimmel take his show to New York for a couple weeks every year? I haven’t seen other hosts do that. A: We don’t see other hosts do it a lot these days, but Jimmy Kimmel (“Jimmy Kimmel Live!”) is, in fact, reviving a grand late-night tradition when he decamps to Brooklyn, New York. He’s also reviving a personal tradition of coming home to get a sandwich. “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” which normally tapes at the El Capitan Entertainment Centre on Hollywood Boulevard in LA, has done Brooklyn residencies just about every year, most recently this past September at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. He chooses Brooklyn because he’s from there and enjoys coming home. Specifically, he’s from the Mill Basin neighborhood and told BrooklynPaper.com that he makes a point of visiting the Mill Basin Deli when he’s back. But taking a late-night talk show on the road is a tradition that dates back to the earliest days of the format. Late-night originator Steve Allen, first host of “The Tonight Show,” took that show on the road for Miami tapings just a few months into its existence in 1953. Subsequent “Tonight Show” hosts did it, too, including the great Johnny Carson (“Looking for Love,” 1964), who initially did Burbank, California, tapings as a road trip before moving the show there full time in the ‘70s (it was actually based in New York until then).
Q: Remember Natasha Henstridge from “Species”? She was supposed to be the next big thing in the ‘90s. What ever happened to her? A: Former fashion model Natasha Henstridge (“Ghosts of Mars,” 2001) made a big splash with her very first role, starring in the buzzy sci-fi flick “Species” in 1995. With an entrance like that, big things were expected of her career. And it did continue strongly for a few roles, such as the 1996 cop film “Maximum Risk” and the 2000 surprise-hit crime-comedy “The Whole Nine Yards.” But it kind of petered out in the ‘00s.
By the end of the decade, she was doing guest TV spots — like the dramedy “Drop Dead Diva” and the legal sitcom “Shark” — and toplining obscure indie movies, such as the 2010 comedy “Let the Game Begin” and the 2011 thriller “The Perfect Student.” That’s very much what her career’s been like since — incredibly busy (not a year has gone by that she hasn’t had at least one title on her resume, and most years has had several) but in mostly under-the-radar fare. That is, until a few weeks ago, when she had a role in the ensemble of one of the most talkedabout miniseries of the year: Netflix’s nauticalthemed sci-fi drama “Below.” She played a mysterious woman named Jan Hicks, working as a resettlement officer in the show’s small Newfoundland town. The show, shot on location in the Canadian province, brought Henstridge back into the limelight, but it also brought her home: she was born in Springdale, Newfoundland, just a few hours away from where “Below” was filmed. Typical of her tireless work ethic, she already has six different projects in post-production. But all being indie pictures, it’s not clear which will come out first and when. But instead he chose to travel further as host of the National Geographic series “Best of the World.” “Queer Eye,” which released its final episode in January of this year, was Netflix’s reboot of the previous hit “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.” Like the original, it pulled together a group of five gay men who traveled the country helping people improve their lives and feel better about themselves. Porowski served as the food expert on the show. That combination of travel and food made him an ideal choice for “Best of the World,” National Geographic’s series version of its popular line of books and magazines. Like the print material, the “Best of the World” show has Porowski offering glimpses of dreamy destinations and advice on “where to go, stay and eat” when you get there. Its four-episode first season, released in June and available on National Geographic, Hulu and Disney+, took him to New York City, Paris, London and Mexico City. Hearing him talk about it, this show is very much in line with “Queer Eye’s” human-centric approach.
