Tours were temporarily paused after sunroom ceiling collapse

By MEGANN HORSTEAD mhorstead@shawmedia.com Tours of the Ellwood House Museum in DeKalb are expected to resume after a temporary pause due to a recent early afternoon incident that left the plaster ceiling in the Mansion’s sunroom collapsed.

The incident took place within minutes of 1 p.m. on Aug. 12, after which firefighters from the DeKalb Fire Department were on scene, conducting a walk-through of the building, according to a social media announcement. Authorities confirmed that there are no other immediate structural concerns with the Ellwood House Museum.

A short time later, staff from the DeKalb Park District were on site and began blocking off windows and moving furniture to prevent further damage, according to the announcement. Museum staff took to the museum disaster plan and started securing collection objects that had been featured in the room.

The Park District is in the middle of a lengthy process of cleaning up, preparing and submitting insurance claims, and coordinating construction, which staff said they anticipate taking several months to complete. During that time, the Mansion’s Sunroom will be inaccessible to the public, according to an announcement.

New Hopkins Park Pool now open to public After almost 3 years of construction, DeKalb Park District unveils new pool

The DeKalb Park District hosted a soft opening Aug. 14 with a lottery for families to partake.

The pool opened to the public on

Aug. 15.

The about $16 million multiyear project has paused summertime pool activities for multiple seasons.

The park district also held a “Name the Pool Contest,” debuting Hopkins Park Pool as the facility’s new name.

Corn Fest returns Aug. 28-30 INBODEN’S MEAT MARKET

By AIMEE BARROWS abarrows@shawmedia.com The biggest end-of-summer summer party in the area returns to downtown DeKalb Aug. 28-30, bringing some of the biggest names from the 2000s-era boy bands.

The family-friendly Corn Fest is free to attend, offering live music for three days, carnival food and rides, craft booths, activities, a free corn boil and more.

The carnival runs from 3 to 11 p.m.

Aug. 28; 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Aug. 29; and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 30. Megabands are $80 for unlimited rides all weekend.

Daily $35 unlimited ride wristbands are available from 3 to 7 p.m.

Friday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and all day Sunday.

The Community Stage, hosted by the Egyptian Theatre, will have a variety of free performances from local groups, musicians and organizations. Performers include Banda NIU, Farmer Jeffro, Two Girls One Guitar, DeKalb Just For Kix, Stage Coach Players, AstroCheer and many more. The Sound Stage, which has a free viewing area on Locust Street between Second and Third avenues, is always a main attraction at Corn Fest.

This year’s Saturday headliner is the 2000s Pop Tour featuring Chris Kirkpatrick from NSYNC, O-Town, Ryan Cabrera and LFO. O-Town had a top hit with the 2001 ballad “All or Nothing,” while Cabrera is known for the hit songs “True” and “On the Way Down.” LFO’s big hits are 1999’s “Summer Girls” and “Girl on TV.” Chairperson Lisa Angel said event organizers have had “great success” throughout the years by having a combined lineup of bands from a particular genre or musical era.

Each town in DeKalb County, 12 present plans of those who are interested in Camp Rotary McQueen near Kirkland, will be given an opportunity to erect a cabin on the ground. Each cabin thus erected will be named after the city or town building it.

The site will be selected by those who are interested in Cap Rotary McQueen, and the village, town or city deciding to build the cabin, will be given the dimensions. Each must be large enough to accommodate 16 boys.

Lights on the football field will be removed by Sandwich volunteer firemen during a practice drill with the new ladder truck. The drill will save the Board of Education $1,000 the cost of having the light removed. The board agreed last week to accept the proposal from the Fire Department.

Fall semester at Northern Illinois University opened today with an expected enrollment of 22,000. University officials anticipate fall enrollment will be the largest since 1971 when 22,819 students were enrolled.

Contracts for the building of a concrete pavement on route 18 between Somonauk and Mendota, that will connect with route 23, lately paved north and south through DeKalb County, have been let by the state highway department. The stretch contracted for is 22.28 miles long.

Tuesday was a day on which the farmers of the vicinity of Mayfield were unable to resume their threshing operations and therefore plans for something different were hurriedly completed. LOCAL NEWS BRIEF DeKalb Township to offer vision and hearing screening event

The DeKalb Township will partner with the Lions of Illinois Foundation to offer residents a vision and hearing screening event.

The free screening will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 2 at the DeKalb Township office, 2323 S. Fourth St. The screening will check for hearing loss and retinal disorders including diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration.

RAMP also will provide information and assistance to participants identified with hearing or vision loss. No registration is required. The clinic is a walk-in only event.

The Kishwaukee College Foundation recently announced the creation of the Roy T. and Joan Fenstermaker Endowment. The endowment provides need-based grants to DeKalb County students whose education was interrupted and are returning to school to support their families and themselves.

Roy and Joan Fenstermaker created a charitable unitrust to benefit several community organizations including the Kishwaukee College Foundation in 2006. The unitrust went into effect upon Joan’s passing in January of 2024 and Roy’s in February of 2026.

The Fenstermakers owned and operated a family farm for more than 50 years in Sycamore. The couple also was active in several community organizations. Roy Fenstermaker served on the Kishwaukee College board of trustees from 1979 to 1997. He oversaw campus expansion projects and new academic programs introductions.

“We are grateful to the Fenstermaker family for their generous donation. Their gift shows a commitment to providing students with an opportunity to return to school, improve their lives and build a stronger future for our community,” Kishwaukee College Foundation executive director Courtney Walz said in a news release.

The free unveiling will begin at noon Aug. 28 at the history center, 1730 N. Main St., Sycamore.

The unveiling features remarks and pop-up craft activities. Refreshments will be served. Attendees also are encouraged to attend the history center’s Garden Story Time program.

The DeKalb County History Center commissioned artist Kailey Rorer to create the bench’s “ Sunup ‘til Sundown” mural. The mural’s theme is “what rural agriculture means” and explores DeKalb County’s landscapes, agricultural traditions and rural life.

The bench was constructed from

recycled materials such as composite lumber, aluminum and retired wind turbine blades. The history center bench’s walls provide shade, shelter and create two ergonomic backrests.

The bench shape will allow visitors a space to enjoy the DeKalb County History Center campus and experience public art.

“We were honored to be selected by the Illinois Arts Council for an Illinois 250 public art grant. This bench and mural is a great addition to the History Center campus with its focus on our county’s rich agricultural traditions,” DeKalb County History Center executive director Michelle Donahoe said in a news release.

The bench project is partially supported by an Illinois Arts Council grant.

This round of funding concludes the DeKalb County Community Foundation’s second year of the Build the Future Grants program.

2026 Build the Future Grants: • Safe Passage – $100,000 for the Building New Beginnings shelter campaign • DeKalb Park District – $50,000 Welsh Park Shelter & Electrical Upgrades Rebecca Versluys, Executive Director of Safe Passage, says that the new shelter “will help Safe Passage create a safe and welcoming space for individuals and families, allowing them to rebuild their lives with dignity and hope.”

Build the Future Grants are awarded annually to eligible organizations in DeKalb County to support the construction or expansion of new facilities. These investments help organizations

strengthen their capacity and enhance the services they provide to residents.

“A new park shelter and electrical improvements at Welsh Park will enhance community events while expanding opportunities to host additional events in the future” DeKalb Park District executive director Paul Zepezauer said in a news release.

“Build the Future Grants give the Foundation an opportunity to make significant investments in projects that will have a lasting impact on our county,” DeKalb County Community Foundation grants and community initiatives director Jolene Willis also said in the news release. “By supporting new and expanded facilities, we can help local organizations build their capacity, serve more residents, and create spaces that will benefit DeKalb County for years to come.”

The Build the Future grant program opens once a year, with Letters of Intent accepted beginning Feb. 1. BLAC Inc. secures funding from city to aid teen programming

By MEGANN HORSTEAD mhorstead@shawmedia.com The DeKalb City Council recently agreed to aid a youth-focused nonprofit in its pursuit of purchasing a former community center in the city’s Annie Glidden North neighborhood.

Founded in 2020, Building Leaders Advocating for Change (BLAC) Inc. is a DeKalb-based organization known in the community for its after-school and summer programs for local youth ages 10 to 18. The nonprofit’s mission centers on purposeful recreation, counseling, STEM education and structured internships that create pathways to future employment.

BLAC Inc. Executive Director Tiffany Tucker had approached the City Council with a financial ask to support her nonprofit with the purchase of the former Congregation Beth Shalom.

The property in question, 820 Russell Road, used to serve as a community center before Congregation Beth Shalom moved into the former Community of Christ Church at 1200 S. Malta Road in late 2025 and listed the property for sale earlier this spring, city documents show.

BLAC Inc. has operated out of several different locations and is looking for a more permanent home in DeKalb.

Tucker said this is where the city’s support can make a difference.

“This gives us the first opportunity to have a house where our youth have stability,” Tucker said. “Sometimes they don’t always have stability in their home, but we want to make sure that we provide that stability for them.”

The one-story building comes with a fully finished basement encompassing 2,400 square feet and currently is vacant.

Several community organizations supported BLAC Inc. with recommendations leading up to this week’s council meeting. BLAC Inc. also maintains partnerships with several other local nonprofits and DeKalb School District 428.

“I think this is a great idea, a perfect location,” Barnes said. “More importantly, it’s a perfect organization and a perfect person to be able to help in this situation.”

“Our young people have so many ideas and so many talents that we need to make sure that they can expand their wings and grow because we’re tipping on the tip of the iceberg on what we can do and having a permanent fixture,” Carrington said. “I’m excited for what we can do and what we can accomplish.”
