Sycamore superintendent, teachers’ union head weigh in on new admin hires By CAMDEN LAZENBY clazenby@shawmedia.com Sycamore District 427 Superintendent Kristen Campbell said on June 22 that she advocated for new administrator positions – four new roles totaling $501,500 in combined salaries – to support students and staff. In recent weeks, four new administrative positions have been created by the Sycamore school board at Campbell’s request. “The purpose of this restructuring is to create a more efficient and sustainable leadership model that better supports our students and staff – not simply to add positions,” Campbell said in a statement to Shaw Local. Specifically, how the district will pay for the new hires has not been completely answered. When asked on June 19, Board President Michael DeVito referenced the district’s $14 million reserve fund, saying it is fully available for operating use. Campbell described the organizational change as “leadership structure enhancements” that will align with the board’s goals, strengthen accountability and improve the efficiency of the district’s operations. “These changes streamline leadership responsibilities and ensure financial and operational resources are utilized strategically to maximize support for students and staff,” Campbell said. In light of these hires, Lynnae Ihm, the

Ihm said that the teachers’ union has
“consistently advocated for additional administrative support at the building level, particularly assistant principal positions.” “For many years, our members have raised concerns regarding student behavior, increasing student needs, staff support, and the growing responsibilities placed on building administrators,” Ihm wrote. Campbell became District 427’s superintendent on March 1 after a nationwide

Continued from page 2 search to fill the position began following a mutual decision by the school board and former superintendent Steve Wilder to part ways weeks before the 2025-26 school year began. Seventy-three days after her employment began with Sycamore schools, Campbell proposed reorganizing the district’s administrative structure. Days after the meeting, DeVito told Shaw Local that the board didn’t take any action regarding Campbell’s recommendation. However, district documents show that the school board came to an informal consensus in agreement with Campbell’s proposed changes, allowing applications for the new jobs to be posted online. “As the demands placed on public schools continue to increase, these changes provide clearer accountability and increased transparency, strengthen operational oversight, and help ensure taxpayer resources are managed responsibly while maintaining a strong focus on our students,” Campbell said. The May 12 special school board meeting wasn’t the first time the board discussed the organizational changes, Campbell said. “The restructuring was developed over several months and informed by ongoing discussions regarding district operations and long-term financial planning,” Campbell said. “Elements of the proposal had been discussed with school board members through board and committee meet-

The structure changes the district is now implementing are designed to provide equal learning opportunities across the district while having measurable accountability to the school board, Campbell said. Documents show that the board has requested updates on the efficacy of the new positions. Ihm said that members of the Sycamore Education Association have shared feedback with her. “As with any significant organizational change, staff will be looking for clear communication regarding responsibilities, expectations, and how these positions will contribute to improving the educational experience for students and working conditions for employees,” Ihm wrote. Campbell said district officials have heard from community members throughout the process of deciding to restructure the school district’s administration. “We recognize the need for clarity within our schools and about our decision-making,” Campbell said. “Starting this month, we are launching a brand-new Transparency Page on our district website. It will be designed to give our community clear answers and include a dedicated space for our community to share their questions with us.”

Pinky Promise Boba trailer sets up shop Menu features fruit teas, milk teas, lemonade, burgers and more By MEGANN HORSTEAD mhorstead@shawmedia.com Pinky Promise Boba, a new pastel pink specialty drink trailer, touched down in DeKalb recently, making its first stop outside the Mobil gas station at 218 W. Lincoln Highway. Owner Vanessa Vences said business was going well for her and her brother, Cesar Vences, running the trailer. “People have been enjoying it,” Vences said. “We’ve had a really positive outlook.” Pinky Promise Boba promises unique ways to customize your tea or coffee, whether it be adding popping Boba or coffee jelly. “It’s a unique flavor,” Vences said. “I’m sure a lot of them, they get reminded of Candy Cloud.” The concept behind Pinky Promise Boba was a bit of an inside joke by design, referring to how Vanessa Vences and her brother would always pinky promise one another while growing up that they’d always have everyone’s back. “It started as a joke, obviously, and we just kind of stuck with it,” Vences said. “It was a joke between my brother and
[me]. ... The joke stuck because of that.” Vences remembers making a promise to herself after her corporate job in accounting didn’t appear to be a match for her, and she decided to join the family-run business in 2025 instead. It all started as a conversation with her mother over boba tea. “We’re building something as a family,” Vences said. “It’s a lot of meaning here.” On its menu, Pinky Promise Boba features fruit teas, milk teas, lemonade, burgers and more. Vences said everything is made to order. “It’s always fresh for our customers,” she said. When asked to spill the tea and reveal the secret behind how Pinky Promise Boba makes its boba tea, Vences said it’s simple. “It’s a lot of love and dedication,” Vences said. “But honestly, we try to source some of the best ingredients that we can for our customers, so we try to use organic tea leaves whenever possible.” This is not the Vences’ first foray into business. Pinky Promise Boba operates a brickand-mortar location under the same name in Plano, which is run and operated by Vanessa Vences’ mother, Virginia Vences.

Here is a roundup of upcoming community events, programs and presentations aimed at observing the nation’s 250th anniversary.
Free breakfast for veterans
The DeKalb Moose Lodge, 1231 E. Lincoln Highway, is offering a free breakfast to veterans every month in recognition of the nation’s 250th anniversary in 2026. The breakfast is open to all veterans from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. The free breakfast is typically served on the third Sunday of each month and is expected to run throughout the rest of 2026. Remaining dates are July 19, Aug. 16, Sept. 20, Oct. 18, Nov. 15 and Dec. 20.
Patriotic house decoration contest
The DeKalb Park District is fielding submissions for its most patriotic house decorations contest. The entry fee is $5. All homes in the DeKalb community will be judged by park district staff and volunteers on July 8, according to the district. Residents are not required to be present during judging. All displays also will be put to a vote online through the park district’s Facebook page for a People’s Choice award, from July 9 to 16, according to the district. The image generating the most likes by 9 p.m. July 16 is the winner and will be announced as such the next day. A prize package awaits the winner.

Maurice Davis is latest addition to District 427’s administrator restructuring By CAMDEN LAZENBY clazenby@shawmedia.com The first chief academic officer for Sycamore schools was the chief strategy officer for Freeport School District 145. The Sycamore school board approved a contract for Maurice Davis on June 16, which will enable him to begin working as the district’s chief academic officer on July 1, documents show. “I am truly humbled to have an opportunity to be a part of this learning community,” Davis said. “I’m excited to get into classrooms and share in the experience of working with both our staff and students.” In a news release announcing Davis’ hire, Sycamore Superintendent Kristen Campbell said she thinks he “brings extensive, dedicated educational leadership experience, strategic planning acumen, and a deep focus on organizational learning to District 427.” In his new role, Davis will be expected to provide leadership to guide the district’s curriculum, instruction, assessment, professional learning and student achievement programs, according to the news release. Documents show that the school district was considering a salary of

$157,000 for the chief academic officer position. The district has not yet made a signed copy of the contract public. His job was first considered as part of a proposed Maurice Davis restructuring of the district’s administrative staff by Campbell during a special May 12 school board meeting. “By adding Dr. Davis to our executive cabinet, District 427 strengthens its ability to deliver a future-ready, student-centered PreK-12 academic vision while ensuring public transparency and structural stability,” Campbell said. Davis earned a doctor of education in educational leadership and administration from Northern Illinois University in 2024, according to the news release. He also holds a Master of Education in superintendency and educational system administration and a Bachelor of Arts in history from Northern Illinois University, as well as a Master’s degree in educational leadership and administration from Grand Canyon University. He has worked as the chief strategy officer and the assistant director of interventions and inclusion for Freeport schools, and previously served as the executive director of schools for Rockford Public School District 205. said. “He knows everything about burgers, how to prep everything, how to cook them, how to assemble them.” The Vences plan to be a frequent presence in the DeKalb community, whether it be at local farmers markets or community events, to get the word out about their speciality drink trailer. The hope, Vences said, is that someday their family can set up another brick-and-mortar location this time in DeKalb. Vences encourages everyone to follow Pinky Promise Boba on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok at @pinkypromiseboba to stay up-to-date on when the trailer will make its next stop in town.

Throughout history, Americans have commonly commemorated milestones through preservation of family artifacts, involvement with civic organizations, the performance of patriotic music and the creation of folk handicrafts and costumes, according to a release. The exhibit aims to build on that tradition through artifacts from the museum’s collection. The reception coincides with another exhibit’s opening. Also that day, Ellwood House Museum invites the public to meet the artist behind the “Arts in Action: The Power of Place” exhibit.

electrical work. Participants also built projects, toured facilities, and gained exposure to realworld job sites and apprenticeship opportunities. The camp was made possible through a partnership between the DeKalb Chamber Foundation and DeKalb Mechanical, with support from local businesses and educational organizations.
For many high school students, summer break means vacations and time off. For dozens of DeKalb-area teenagers, however, this summer provided an opportunity to explore careers that are in high demand and offer strong earning potential without requiring a traditional fouryear college degree. The Heavy Metal Summer Experience (HMSE), hosted at DeKalb Mechanical in DeKalb, introduced students ages 15–19 to hands-on work in plumbing, electrical systems, piping, sheet metal fabrication, and welding. The program is part of a national initiative designed to expose young people to careers in the skilled trades. The DeKalb camp quickly became one of the program’s biggest success stories—the local program attracted the highest number of applicants among first-year HMSE locations nationwide, with 31 students participating during the two-week experience. Students spent their afternoons working alongside experienced trades professionals, learning practical skills that included welding, metal bending, plumbing installation, and
One of the program’s biggest attractions is its focus on “earn while you learn” career pathways. Many trade apprenticeships allow participants to receive paid training while gaining industry certifications and experience, often avoiding the student debt associated with traditional college programs. For high school students who enjoy working with their hands, solving practical problems, or building and repairing things, programs like the Heavy Metal Summer Experience offer a chance to explore careers that are essential to every community. Additional information about future DeKalb camps can be found through the official Heavy Metal Summer Experience website and the DeKalb Chamber Foundation. State automobile license books from No. 1 to 1,000,000 have been received at the police station and every DeKalb owner of a motor vehicle is listed. DeKalb owners also are being listed for the purpose of checking up on the city vehicle tax plates. The task of making a list of DeKalb-owned motor vehicles subject to vehicle tax has been a strenuous one, but the fellows on the department have taken turns in going through the books. When the final checkup started within the next few days on vehicle tax purchasers, it will take but little time and effort to get those who have not yet attended to this matter. Commissioner of Public Works Goodison states that excellent progress is being made by the paving gang on the north side of DeKalb at this time, with the construction work being done on North Eleventh street. It is expected that the graders will start on Pearl Street within a short time getting that ready for slab. Until Gurler Street is sufficiently cured, it is not probable that anything will be done with the last two or three blocks of the paving contract here.
Water fights, baseball and dancing are on tap at the Kirkland Bicentennial celebration Friday through Monday at the village park. Area fire departments will be pitted against each other on Friday. More than $1,700 worth of new playground equipment is being installed at the new village park, corner of Burlington, Gage and Pine streets in Somonauk. The Somonauk Jaycees recently put in cement and bases for five pieces, a buck-about, a whirl, kiddie swings, bouncing chairs and railroad track for the play train planned for next year.

DeKalb City Council approves Project Big Lakes east reserved for potential expansion, according to the site plan. “This is an exciting project,” City Plans for an unidentified company Manager Nicklas said. “We haven’t had behind a major development codenamed a manufacturer excited in our commuProject Big Lakes in DeKalb are a go, nity for a long time.” Developers are looking to build on after a pair of unanimous votes taken two lots totalling about 47 acres at the last week by the DeKalb City Council. Lot 2 is meant to take up about 21 acres at the northeast corner of Fairview and Macom drives. In the vicinity of the project are existing warehouse distribution facilities for 3M and Target. Nicklas said the company likes the idea of being in DeKalb. “It’s outside the urban sprawl but close enough so that they work with potential customers in the Chicago metropolitan area and other places around the lake,” Nicklas said. “They’ve found a
welcome reception in DeKalb. Our checklist apparently conformed with their expectations, and we’re happy about that.” Project leaders have said the company is expected to employ anywhere from 150 to 300 employees on-site. “We’re happy to see this company land,” Nicklas said. “Because of the manufacturing, we think it’ll be very good for our residents. It’s going to pay better than some other types of industrial occupations.”

By MEGANN HORSTEAD mhorstead@shawmedia.com Because of a lack of availability of funding, Habitat for Humanity of DeKalb County’s Home Preservation Program has been paused, effective June 22. The program offering has been around for two years and has aided between 30 and 35 residents throughout DeKalb County during that time. Habitat for Humanity of DeKalb County Executive Director Kim McIver said they have seen a drop in grant funding from community sources. “Unfortunately, our funding has dwindled from that pot, so we need to pause it, take some time to reevaluate and identify new funding opportunities for that program,” McIver said. Typically, Habitat for Humanity of DeKalb County extends grants up to $7,500 to individuals who qualify as low-income, need repairs on their home or face code violations. McIver said it’s clear the home preservation program has seen its share of success. The program, for example, has helped residents with everything from equipping their homes with wheelchair-accessible ramps and roofs to window repairs. “We’ve seen an increase in calls from
and Urban Development. In the meantime, Habitat for Humanity of DeKalb County intends to continue applying for available grant opportunities, extending outreach to potential donors, getting the word out, and working with community partners. McIver touted what the home preservation program has accomplished so far. “I’m really proud of the program again because you’re helping your neighbors, and it’s those individuals that have contributed to your community for 30-plus years,” McIver said. “Now, they need a little help.” In working to extend aid to those in need, McIver stressed that it’s not a handout, it’s a hand up. “We’re trying to help people, empower them and still feel that they have that control in their home,” she said. The repair program’s pause doesn’t have any implications on Habitat for Mark Busch file photo Humanity of DeKalb County’s latest build, McIver said. A mural is seen on June 15 at the corner of East Lincoln Highway and Seventh Street in DeKalb.
New mural along Lincoln Highway in DeKalb Mural pays tribute to one of the founders of modern America By MEGANN HORSTEAD mhorstead@shawmedia.com Kirsten Sandlin has long been fond of President Abraham Lincoln and what he’s done for America. Sandlin said she’s excited to help tell the story about his native land in Illinois. From Memphis, Tennessee, artist Sandlin was commissioned by the city of DeKalb to paint a mural near the intersection of East Lincoln Highway
and Seventh Street downtown. “It’s always amazing when you get chosen,” Sandlin said. “It feels validating that your hard work is appreciated.” It’s all meant to commemorate the nation’s 250th anniversary, which is being observed by the city in various ways throughout the year. Sandlin said she’s been putting a lot of hard work into the mural. “I work from early mornings until it gets dark,” she said. Sandlin said she’s accustomed to the bit of fanfare that comes with painting a mural. “People will come and talk,” Sandlin said. “I’m really used to that. As a public artist, I consider it part of my job.”
She often has to travel to commission artwork for a living. She said she senses that the DeKalb community is all about belonging and connection. “I’ve traveled a lot,” she said. “It’s really good here.” In Memphis, Sandlin said she hasn’t always felt like she belonged. “I was the weirdo,” Sandlin said. “I was the odd person now. Did not feel that belonging. Did not feel that connection. Didn’t feel that support. Didn’t think I could be an artist. I found a small community that made me feel safe and comfortable. But what I’ve seen here is that that community seems to be everywhere.” Sandlin said she’s committed to leaving her mark in all the communi-
ties where her artwork is commissioned in more ways than one. “Anytime I go into a community, I like to invest in the art community,” Sandlin said. Sandlin said she’s been in talks with the owners of Fargo Skateboarding and Off The Tracks Art Supply about potentially leading some art workshops. Work on the mural is partially paid for using a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, according to a news release from the city. The city also set aside sales tax dollars in its America250 Fund to help pay for such projects. Work on the mural along is anticipated to be completed just in time for the start of the Fourth of July holiday.

Use only spare parts recommended by the manufacturer to ensure proper function and to avoid the risk of fire and burns. To avoid danger of choking or strangulation hazard, keep cords away from children and pets. TALK TO YOUR HEALTH CARE PROVIDER: The oxygen flow setting must be determined and recorded for each patient individually by the prescriber, including the configuration of the device, its parts, and the accessories. It is the responsibility of the patient to periodically reassess the setting(s) of the therapy for effectiveness. The proper placement and positioning of the prongs of the nasal cannula in the nose is critical for oxygen to be delivered.
