Underwood seeks federal funding for NIU’s child care, family center
By CAMDEN LAZENBY clazenby@shawmedia.com
DeKALB – The Northern Illinois University Child Development and Family Center in DeKalb could get a boost thanks to U.S. Rep. Lauren Underwood, D-Naperville.
Underwood, a member of the House Appropriations Committee, submitted 15 projects for the 14th Illinois Congressional District worth $26 million for to aid community projects in her district in fiscal 2025, according to a news release from her office.
“Our families will feel the enormous impact of these 15 projects every day,” Underwood said in a provided statement. “We’re making sure our drinking water is clean and safe across northern Illinois; strengthening access to quality health care in rural communities, providing parents affordable child care options, and so much more.”
One of those projects is NIU’s Education for Parents Project, which would remodel and convert university property into what Underwood’s office described as “a significantly larger child care center.”
Currently, the NIU Child Development and Family Center provides day care services from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays, according to the university. The center cares for children as young as 3 months and up to 5 years old. It has three infant classrooms, three toddler classrooms, two classrooms for 2-year-olds, and four preschool classrooms.
Underwood is seeking $1 million in federal funding in the fiscal 2026 budget for an expansion of that center. Her office wrote that the project funding would go toward a learning space renovation, the hiring of new employees, classroom painting and roof, drainage, window and flooring repairs.
In a news release, Underwood’s office said projects that were selected for community project funding in fiscal 2025 were not
included in a funding bill passed by Congress earlier this year. The majority of those projects were resubmitted for fiscal 2026, however.
Underwood said she looks forward to working with legislators on Capitol Hill to secure funding for projects in her district.
“Making sure that our community’s needs are reflected in federal funding has always been a top priority of mine in Washington,” Underwood said.

At the present time the basement being excavated for the new Fourth Street bank appears like a checkerboard puzzle of some nature. The excavators have reached three different depths in the excavation at the present time. When the work is completed, the basement proper will be eight feet two inches from the level of the first floor, but the excavation for the vault will be a few feet deeper, in order to accommodate all of the steel and concrete work that will be used in the sides and floor of the huge vault. At the present time the excavation for the vault is being made, and a hole nearly 14 feet deep is being excavated, so that when the vault is built the floor of the safety room will be on a level with the floor of the basement.

DeKalb flower shop donates $7K to migrant aid nonprofit
‘So grateful to be part of a community that believes compassion isn’t optional,’ shop owners say
By MEGANN HORSTEAD mhorstead@shawmedia.com
DeKALB – After turning the social media buzz they got from proclaiming support for immigrants into a fundraiser for people in need, two sisters behind a DeKalb flower shop raised $7,000 to donate, they announced Tuesday.
Kat Willrett and Mary Grace McCauley, sisters who co-own Willrett Flower Company in downtown DeKalb, said they will donate the funds to DeKalb Migrant Aid, a local group dedicated to supporting immigrant needs.
“We’re so grateful to be part of a community that believes compassion isn’t optional,” the sisters said in a joint statement. “As two white women running a flower shop in a small Midwest town, we’ve had moments of wondering: What can we really do? Can a busi-
ness like ours make a real difference? And the answer is: yes – because everyone can.”
The sisters announced the funding total on their business social media page, days after they declared plans to donate 100% of shop proceeds Saturday to the nonprofit.
The duo said they received shop orders from all over, including out of state.
The charitable action was prompted after the flower business generated significant public response last week after they posted a pro-immigrant message online June 11, calling Trump-era immigration policies “deeply disturbing.”
The sisters said they knew speaking out might harm their business, but felt an obligation to extend compassion to those who may be harmed by federal action.
Willrett Flower Company thanked the community for supporting its efforts to stand in solidarity.
“This donation is one meaningful step,” the sisters said. “It’s not the end of the work, and we’re committed to continuing to show up, learn and act in solidarity – not just when it’s easy, but especially when it’s not.”

How many have opted in?
As of June 11, 219 municipalities statewide have enacted a local grocery tax, according to Department of Revenue records. Illinois has 1,295 municipalities, according to the comptroller’s website.

Local city councils and village boards must pass an ordinance to that effect and send a certified copy to the Illinois Department of Revenue, postmarked by Oct. 1, a department spokesperson said.
Many communities beyond what’s on the list have indicated they were looking at the local tax.
