New Venezuelan home-style food restaurant in DeKalb
By MEGANN HORSTEAD mhorstead@shawmedia.com
Provecho, a new spot in downtown DeKalb, is serving up home-style Venezuelan food that fuses ingredients and flavors for a unique experience its chef hopes patrons will enjoy.
It’s all in the name, after all, says owner Emmanuel Gonzalez.
The restaurant, 131 E. Lincoln Highway, has seen its share of improvements since it opened to the public in early May.
At Provecho, patrons are greeted by a counter along with two sections of indoor dining with plenty of seating. At about 2,000 square feet, the space is distinguished, in part, by a commercial glass garage door, creating the illusion of semi-outdoor dining in the restaurant.
“I try to keep it open because this is the only way that I think you can get another experience in the restaurant,” Gonzalez said.
Gonzalez described the overall look of the restaurant he set out to achieve as “vintage industrial.”
Gonzalez, who is Venezuelan, said he misses his native Venezuela.
He and his immediate family moved to the U.S. in 2015.
But it wasn’t all rosy for Gonzalez growing up in Venezuela. Gonzalez said he’s since been excited by the promise of all the newfound opportunities available to him.
“It’s really hard to get a degree over there, start something and grow up ... in my country,” he said.
Gonzalez, who is a protected asylee in the U.S., said he has had some concerns about President Donald Trump and his administration’s recent military operations directed at Venezuela.
PUZZLE ANSWERS
puzzlesonpage13
In January, the U.S. launched a military attack to capture Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro and his wife in a series of interventions aimed at securing oil investments to revitalize the Venezuelan energy sector, The Associated Press reported.
“I still worry about it for the situation of my family who is still there,” Gonzalez said.
But Gonzalez said he is focused on bringing a taste of Venezuela to DeKalb.
On its menu, Provecho boasts some of the traditional favorites in homemade Venezuelan food, from empanadas and tequenos, to arepas and patacon.
And there’s more to come. They’re just getting started on menu offerings.
Gonzalez said patrons tend to have positive things to say about their experiences at Provecho.
This is not Gonzalez’s first foray into business.
Gonzalez started at home, preparing dishes and doing deliveries to customers. It progressed to him working events and larger festivals, mainly in Chicago.
Gonzalez said he is learning how to better source the market for all the ingredients and flavors he needs to cook.
“That is the hard part,” Gonzalez said. “It’s not the same thing talking about flavors. You have to look around [at] every option, similar options to get the taste.”
Provecho is available for dine-in, takeout, and more recently, delivery services through DoorDash.
The restaurant is open from 10:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, from 10:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday and from 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.

From now on automobile washers will have their troubles, as street oiling operations in some parts of the city began today. It is not known how many carloads of road oil have been ordered, nor how extensive the work will be in the city this year. Many streets that in previous years have been oiled, are being paved now, and it is probable that in another five years it will be unnecessary to oil any of the side streets.
Workmen today started on an addition to the White Rose laundry, which H. G. Belding states have become necessary on account of increased business. The boiler capacity of the laundry will be doubled and the extra room which is being built to the west of the present building will be used for the new boiler and also for storage purposes. It is understood Mr. Belding plans to add additional new equipment to the place within a short time, to more easily handle the large amount of work that is being received.
Five barrels of hard cider, each containing 14 gallons of the drink, were emptied into the city sewer near the city hall building about five o’clock yesterday afternoon. The cider was confiscated by the police Tuesday afternoon at the time the Manos soft drink parlor was raided. It was stated today that the cider tested from 12 to 20 percent alcohol and the police thought it best to pour the liquor into the city sewer.
The Hussey Coal & Lumber company East Lincoln Highway announces today that the new service, gas and oil station, which has been under process of construction for several days, is ready to open, and the place will be ready for inspection by the people of the city on Saturday. The Hussey company, since taking over part of the holdings of L. C. Schermerhorn has made some noticeable improvements about the place, and it is believed that it will prove an asset to that section of the city.

Although county officials stressed a proposed plan to build north of the courthouse was merely a “planning tool,” residents were concerned the county was even considering the move. Several residents said the county has room on the courthouse block to construct more offices, possibly as wings to the present structure.
Funds for repairs on Ill. 64 in DeKalb County are part of the state transportation department’s budget for fiscal 1977. Almost seven miles of the highway will be widened and resurfaced. For the past few weeks, the DeKalb police department has been staging a drive against double parking in the business district. For a time, violators were given warnings but of late all vehicles found double-parked have been ticketed and the violators have been fined. The practice of double parking was becoming so bad that in some cases several cars could be noted parked in such a manner in one block. Since the placing of tickets on these cars was started, there are fewer
and fewer being noted and before long, it is hoped that double parking will be halted entirely.

Residents are reminded that the paper drive planned for Saturday June 8 by the DeKalb Scouts and Cubs has been cancelled. It was found necessary to cancel the collection of paper as there is no way to dispose of the paper at this time as there is no market for it. As there is no place to store the paper until such time as there is a market, the paper drive scheduled for tomorrow has been cancelled.
Work on the huge elevated water storage tank, one of the several major projects in the improvement and extension of the DeKalb water system, is rapidly nearing completion.
