Currently estimated just over 5,000 residents, the Village of Coal City is a place to learn, live, play, grow, and enjoy. The continuing increase in population has found the Village to be very livable. Located just south of I-80 along the I-55 Corridor, Coal City is conveniently located at the doorstep of the western suburbs. This allows residents to enjoy the shopping of regional shops and malls in Bolingbrook and Oakbrook, the cultural interests of downtown Chicago including its museums, sports, and performances, and the rest and relaxation of small town living all available within one day’s activities. Playing has been at the heart of this community since its onset. Many of the residents enjoy camping, fishing,and boating at the adjoining chain of lakes consisting of abandoned mines along the northern border of Coal City. These clubs include the Coal City Area
Club, Miners Club, and CECO Club. Each has their own boards and rules for membership, but provides a wealth of recreational opportunities. If one does not want to join one of these clubs, Coal City is located within minutes of the Kankakee and Des Plaines rivers, which brings a wealth of additional recreational opportunities including horseback riding. Each year, the Village comes together in a number of events including its Octoberfest, which sees the downtown area shut down and the streets overcome with vendors, people, and businesses celebrating the passing of summer into the fall and community. The Village and a host of non-profit organizations are comprised of the residents who invest their time and energy into making Coal City even more enjoyable and a place where people can continue to live, learn, play, and grow.

WELCOME FROM THE MAYOR OF COAL CITY Thank you for taking the time to look at Coal City as a place to find something you need, enjoy for the day, or decide to reside permanently. I am confident that you will be rewarded with the rich tradition and pride that Coalers take in their community and is evident with a quick drive down Broadway. The Village Board and I have taken to heart the task of keeping this community, founded in 1881, which has been home to generations of families, a place to learn, live, play, grow, and enjoy. In other words, I hope that you come to find what the Trustees and I already know – Coal City is a place to call home. Coal City is unique as a community due to its roots in the mining that took place in the latter 19th century within this region and was the basis for Carbon Hill, Diamond, and Coal City. This is where the population boom that has filled the western and southern suburbs with new residential growth meets an existing full service community. This community includes an award winning unit school district, which calls Coal City home as well as the
Coal City Fire and Coal City Public Library districts. All of these, along with municipal utility and police services, form a community that has attracted residential and commercial growth in recent years. The Village Board has recently turned its attention to improving the infrastructure of the village to ensure continued dependable service for its residents and businesses. The primary focus of the community has been updating the storm water system to convey water out of Coal City during heavy rains, which have stressed the systems of many suburbs throughout Chicagoland. Additionally, roads and sidewalks have been updated and installed to provide a safe local network for cars and pedestrians alike. The last major item to receive the Board’s effort is the establishment of a tax increment financing district. This economic competition tool will allow Coal City to continue to attract new businesses and jobs and ensure residents a continued high quality of life, which has been enjoyed by previous generations.
Whether you have enjoyed the annual Octoberfest provided by one of the village’s many volunteer organizations, or are enjoying a weekend of relaxation and fishing with family and friends at one of the clubs that surround Coal City, I hope that you find your experience refreshing and leaving you with the feeling that you would like to

HISTORY OF COAL CITY Before the Village’s incorporation, the history of Coal City has always been centered upon the resource of coal. Coal City was one of many villages in the area that received its start from the mines utilized to mine coal for local blacksmiths and farmers, who added the natural resource into the ears of corn that were burnt in order to create heat and energy. The area was settled beginning in the mid 1800s along with local neighbors South Wilmington, Braidwood, Godley, Carbon Hill, and Diamond. Consisting of sunken mines 3 and 4, a population of 900 and two buildings – the Coalfield Hotel and Charles Fisher’s Store, the Village incorporated on August 17, 1881. The population of the Village would fluctuate depending upon the success of the local mines. Beginning in the 1920s and completed within the next decade the Opera House joined the Village’s downtown facades along Broadway. In the 1940’s residents of Coal City along with Streator and Mazon enjoyed hopping on the “Doodlebug” each day, which was a passenger train that would pick up riders and drop them off in Joliet each day from the BNSF station still located at the end of Church Street. Currently estimated at just over 5,000 residents, the Village of Coal City continues to be a place to learn, live, play, grow, and enjoy. A lot of residents within the area have a connection to other relatives who have known of the area for generations. Residents in the newer subdivisions such as Richards Crossing and Spring Meadows have discovered a community that enjoys low property taxes while providing an award-winning education exceeding state averages in ISAT scores, and has traditionally rewarded the community in athletics with performances that include state champions. The entire community, along with Diamond, Carbon Hill, and Goose Lake, send their children to one community unit school district that includes the Elementary School, Intermediate School, Middle School, High School and, beginning with the Fall of 2008, the Early Childhood Learning Center. Grundy County has experienced an increase in housing starts and will be the next high growth area after the density of Will and Kendall Counties increase. The Village has completed a Comprehensive Plan to carefully control the
growth in the area and ensure the Village enjoys the opportunities that come along such as commercial establishments, more manufacturing and professional opportunities, and restaurants. The truck traffic in the area is an indicator of the logistics and geographical advantage that Coal City carries over much of the nation. Along with the growth in these areas will come additional passive and active recreational areas for resident enjoyment. Lastly, residents have enjoyed the community since its incorporation. From the early Turners who continued the Bohemian traditions to the Lions Club Members, Coal City is a group of residents who enjoy their Village. WELCOME FROM THE MAYOR OF DIAMOND As Mayor for the Village of Diamond and on behalf of the Village Board, Planning & Zoning Board, employees, and all of our residents, I extend to you our warmest welcome. We are extremely pleased to offer this resource for all who are interested in learning more about our Village. Diamond’s unique character is rooted in its 117 year history – a history full of bright people and fascinating tales. Back then newly discovered mines in the area offered opportunities for employment and one area that began to grow was Diamond, located northwest of Braidwood. Throughout the years Diamond has seen continued growth and improvement. The current Board has focused its attention on several areas, the first being to attract economic development and the second being to improve infrastructure. With those two goals in mind the Village established a TIF District in the Will County portion of our community. This will enable major roadway improvements on IL 113 and Will Road, along with the construction of Smith Road. Also planned is the construction of a new water tower and enclosure of the ditch along Will Road. These improvements and others will position the Village to attract economic development. The Village continues to pursue grant opportunities for major infrastructure improvements. This year grant funds were used toward the installation of theme streetlights and a new water treatment plant. A public (Diamond)/private (Developers)/federal (grant) partnership also provided over $2M of intersection and roadway improvements at IL 113 and Will Road. Next year the Village will utilize grant funds toward the construction of a new well. In previous years grant funds have been utilized for new sidewalks and toward a new waste water treatment plant. Our approximately 2,500 residents can enjoy the quaint, small town atmosphere, along with a great school district, convenient shopping, services and churches, nearby beautiful state parks and recreational opportunities, as well as low taxes and a low crime rate, while still having all of the offerings of urban life a short drive away. The Village Board meets the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. here at the Village Hall. DIAMOND HISTORY The Village of Diamond is located in Grundy County and Will County, 52 miles southwest of the Chicago Loop, just south of I-80 along the I-55 Corridor. The Village was named after the coal synonym “black diamond” due to the sparkle from the sunlight on the rich black coal. The area attracted coal miners in the early 1870’s and on February 16, 1883 tragedy struck when a mine shaft flooded, killing 74 men and boys. A monument was erected and still stands in Diamond on IL 113 memorializing the event. Incorporated in 1895, the Village nearly disappeared after coal mining ended in the early 1900’s. The Village reincorporated in 1949 and had a population of 1,393 by the end of the century. Today more than 2,500 people call Diamond home. Diamond, Coal City, Carbon Hill and Goose Lake all send their children to the Coal City Community Unit School District #1 that includes the Early Childhood Learning Center, Elementary School, Intermediate School, Middle School, and High School, which provide award-winning education exceeding state averages in ISAT scores and routinely producing athletes with performances that include state champions.

HISTORY OF CARBON HILL The village of Carbon Hill is situated in Felix Township, Grundy County IL, in the NW 1/4 of Section 34, Twp 33, Range 8. Carbon Hill was surveyed and platted by the Star Coal Co. of Streator, IL in June of 1891 and the village was organized January 25, 1892. Robert Fleming became the first president of the Village, which had a population of 1800 at the time. South of Rathbun St. had the original buildings near the EJ&E RR roundhouse in an area called Runcie’s addition. That area was later dubbed Bunker Hill during the mining strikes. Prior to incorporation, Carbon Hill was just a coal mining camp known as Scotch Hill. The streets of Carbon Hill were named for officers of the mining company: Holcomb, Perry, and Rathbun. Mining investors Judson, Kangley, and Cameron have streets named for them as well. In 1900, four coal mines operated around and under the village and the population (which is now about 400) hovered near 2,000 with Scotch, Welsh, English, Irish, Italian, Austrian, Slovenian, as well as African American mining families. Families concentrated in their own neighborhoods and the men met in the dozens of saloons to socially and politically communicate in their native tongues. The baking ovens in town provided a pleasant morning aroma on the way to the mines. The town band performed in the park’s bandstand for evening entertainment. Soc-
cer and Bocce were the prominent sports. Wooden sidewalks and gas lights provided a turn of the century scene. The business district was filled with stores, a post office, a meat market, an opera hall, a hotel, a livery stable, a blacksmith, the village hall and jail, the Carbon Hill Athletic Club headquarters, the doctor’s house and office, a fire house, a beer house, the EJE RR, depot, and roundhouse, and a variety of yards filled with grape arbors, root cellars, chicken coops, and wells. The local school opened in September, 1893 and closed during the consolidation of 1955. Over the years a few taverns, a few gas stations, bait shops, and home based businesses have and continue to exist. The town remains familiar and friendly, maintaining its own identity and government. Citizens pay taxes to the Coal City library, fire, and school districts, and the village purchases its water supply from nearby Coal City. The former Carbon Hill school serves as a local public museum. The coal company gifted the community park to the village to be kept for community use in perpetuity. Thus our well maintained park has been used for family reunions, picnics, ball games, and various fundraisers for over 100 years. Our very successful Carbon Hill Homecoming held its 63rd annual celebration in June, 2012.
CARBON HILL SCHOOL MUSEUM The museum also opens by appointment for interested individuals, families or groups. The original 1893 schoolhouse displays hundreds of original artifacts depicting immigrant turn-of-the-century life of families, businesses, and coal mines. Original items include the jailhouse iron doors, soccer trophies and bocce balls, coal mining tools, furniture and household items,old store supplies, Illinois coal reports, maps and plats, and plenty of family memories; there is something to interest everyone. A significant portion of the north room represents all the coal fields of Grundy and Will Counties in Illinois. In the south classroom you can sit at the desks, read through the old books, see photos depicting our classes and school history, 1893-1955. Three rooms are filled with photographs, artifacts, local memorabilia, kitchen, bedroom and store displays from “the old days,” plus a diorama of Carbon Hill, in its mining heyday, circa 1900.

The Coal City Unit School District #1 proudly serves Coal City, Diamond, Carbon Hill and Goose Lake Township and is comprised of five schools, which are organized in a grade center format as follows: Early Childhood Center—Grades PreK-1 Elementary School—Grades 2-3 Intermediate School—Grades 4-5 Middle School—Grades 6-8 High School—Grades 9-12
District #1 is committed to the continuous improvement of our entire educational program. Therefore, not only is our academic program exemplary, but our students have multiple opportunities to become involved in
excellent extra and co-curricular activities. In order for our students to enjoy the total school experience, I encourage them to become involved in all aspects of their school. Not only do we enjoy an excellent school system, but we have the benefit of supportive communities filled with people who understand and appreciate the value of education. Parents have many opportunities to get involved in our schools through the PSO, Music Boosters and Athletic Boosters, just to name a few. The Coal City High School recently underwent a major construction program that included a 91,000 square foot addition and 18,736 square feet of renovations. It includes new state-of-the-art facilities, such as new science labs and a new auditorium and gymnasium. The Coal City Early Childhood Center is located on a 15 acre site in Coal City. It serves preschool, kindergarten and first grades. This 73,610 square foot one story facility began construction in May of 2007, and was completed in June of 2008.

ANGELS OF HOPE, INC., NFP Angels of Hope, Inc., was created in July 2005 to serve as beacons of hope for those suffering from the emotional and physical absence of a child. What began as three friends meeting for church projects grew into a discussion of raising infertility awareness and ultimately the desire to bring an Angel of Hope statue to the Village of Coal City, Illinois. Angels of Hope, Inc. also wishes to increase awareness of the grieving process as it relates to the loss of a child and the loss of fertility through advocacy and public education, with the hope of offering positive support during times of need. The GFWC-IL Coal City Junior Woman’s Club has been serving the community of Coal City since 1952. We are part of the world’s largest women’s volunteer service organization, working to make a difference in our local community. We coordinate projects that affect many families in our community – Octoberfest, Baby Valentine, Fingerprinting for Kids, Easter Scramble, Ice Cream for Reading, Village Tree Lighting, High School Scholarships, Adopt-a-Needy Family, Books for Babies, Illinois Leadership Seminar, and Celebrating Families Writing Competition to name a few. We also donate monies to several organizations including Children’s Research Foundation, Child Abuse Prevention, American Diabetes Foundation, Lifeline, Grundy County Hospice, Coal City Food Pantry, Under His Wings Women’s Shelter, Les Turner ALS Foundation, and other local organizations. Upcoming events include the 27th Annual Octoberfest (Oct 6, downtown Coal City) and an Open House (Sep 29, Coal City Public Library, 6:30 pm). New members are always welcome. The Coal City Touchdown Club is a non-for-profit organization which started in 2003 and was incorporated in 2006. Their goal is to provide support to the Coal City Coaler football program by purchasing equipment and adding other positive influences to the program. They also help to nurture the players and fans experience without burdening the taxpayers of Coal City Unit District #1 with non-traditional expenses. The Coal City Touchdown Club has provided many needed items to help promote, improve and develop the Coal City Coaler football program in which the kids participate. Past purchased items include the Coaler football tunnel, training/practice/weight room equipment, camera equipment and decorations, and spirit items for the fans at games. They also coordinate a weekly Wednesday night dinner and player award presentation throughout the football season. The one and only fundraiser held each year is the annual event. In its eleventh year, this event will be held in spring 2013. FOSSIL COLLECTING Mazonia is well known for Pennsylvanian age fossils. And the elusive Tully Monster, which was designated the Illinois State Fossil in 1989, is only found in and around the Mazon Creek. The Mazon Creek area is of one of the most famous fossil producing regions in the world. This area, that runs through Kankakee, Livingston, Will, Grundy and La Salle counties, has produced some the most amazing fossils ever found. Fossil hunting is restricted, but day permits (required to collect fossils) can be requested from Mazonia Fossil Permit Office, P.O. Box 126, Braceville, IL 60407 or by calling the office at the Mazonia-Braidwood State Fish and Wildlife Area (815) 237-0063. A reporting form is also available for reporting what was found. Excavations and collecting for commercial purposes are prohibited. In addition, fossil collecting is restricted to March 1st to September 30th. In this area, which lies in Grundy and Will Counties, ironstone nodules containing plant remains are found in waste piles of strip and underground mines and at places along Mazon Creek.
