Southwest Iowa Hot Air Balloon Days chairperson
The Southwest Iowa Hot Air Balloon Day event is celebrating its 40th Anniversary this year! What a wonderful tradition this has become for Creston and the surrounding communities. I would like to invite everyone to come to Creston and partake in an activity that you enjoy. We have so many activities for friends and families. The weekend starts off on Thursday, Sept. 14, with the Annual Pork Chop Dinner at McKinley Park. It is so easy to drive up and get your meal to go or enjoy the beauty of the park and picnic outside. The rest of the events kick off Friday, Sept. 15 and last through Sunday, Sept. 17. If the weather cooperates,
there will be a Fun Flight Friday night and it is wonderful because there is a home football game too. Sometimes if the wind is right, the balloons can be seen flying over the football field for home and visitors to enjoy. Other flights will be Saturday morning, Saturday night and Sunday morning. There is also a Night Glow Saturday evening, which is something to take in if you haven’t seen it before. There are too many other activities to name here, but please refer to the Balloon Days Tab in the Creston News Advertiser or go to the Chamber of Commerce Website for a schedule of events. Longtime balloonist to return for 40th straight SW Iowa Hot Air Balloon Days By ALEX FELKER

Bill Griffin is the only hot air balloonist to have flown at every Southwest Iowa Hot Air Balloon Days event. For 40 years, Griffin has been traveling to Creston from his home in Carlisle, and flying — or not flying, as the weather would allow — at an event he calls “the most enjoyable race of the year.” “It’s not only the really nice time of year,” said Griffin, “as you’re moving into fall, but also the sponsors there have been really terrific over the years. And the people are just so supportive
of the event.” Griffin became a private hot air balloon pilot in 1978 and a commercial pilot in 1979, and retired in 2011 after 39 years as an English and ELL instructor at Des Moines public schools. “And in those early years,” said Griffin, “you
could practically go to a balloon event every weekend. And Creston was always the end of the season. It was sort of the last of the big balloon weekends that pilots would go to.” Over the years, Griffin

2017 National Classic winner returns to SW Iowa Hot Air Balloon Days CNA managing editor svicker@crestonnews.com
This weekend’s 40th edition of the Southwest Iowa Hot Air Balloon Days features the return of one of the top balloonists in the nation. Jeremy Rubin of Ankeny takes his Lindstrand racing balloon “Legacy” to between four and six balloon competitions throughout the year, with the National Balloon Classic in Indianola and the U.S. Nationals being staples of his schedule. Rubin won this year’s National Balloon Classic in August, marking the third time he’s won Iowa’s biggest balloon competition. “It was a nail-biter,” Rubin said about this year’s National Balloon Classic. “I really didn’t fly that well for the first three flights. I was hanging around on the cusp of the top 10. Our fourth of five flights, they called a five-part task. I got in the air early and got good scores on all five be-
fore the winds changed and I moved up to third.” On the last day of competition, Rubin found himself in another wind shift and picked a good launch spot, enabling himself to get his scores in before conditions worsened, vaulting him to the top of the standings. Success has followed him to every competition he’s traveled to, but despite strong finishes, he’s yet to meet his goal of qualifying for the World Championships at the U.S. National Championships. The U.S. National Championships takes the top 50 pilots from all over the country. “What they’re trying to do is, first and foremost, get on the podium at the U.S. Nationals and hopefully win the U.S. National Championship,” Rubin said. “The other – a second goal – is to try to qual- Rubin
ify for the Worlds team.” The World Championships are held every two years, with Team USA taking 10 pilots. Team USA typically takes the top five to seven each year from the U.S. National Championships. Rubin won the 2007 Rookie of the Year award at the U.S. National Championships and has a career-best finish of ninth, putting him right on the doorstep of qualifying for the World Championships. “It’s that event that has been a dagger in my side,” Rubin said. “I’ve had success just about everywhere else I’ve gone, but just can’t get over the hump on that one.”
Creston event Rubin has entered Creston’s balloon competition five times prior, but has only actually flown a couple of times because of weather. But, it’s still an event that holds a special place in his heart after growing up crewing for balloon teams during the event. As a child, Rubin’s mother

became involved with hot air ballooning before eventually getting her license. After crewing for his mother, Rubin got his own license. “When I was younger, as a pilot, I tried to go to every event I could,” Rubin said. “Creston was kind of the one that you wrapped up your season with. It’s usually one of the last events in the Midwest. I would always try to fit it in the calendar. Unfortunately, after I had kids, life got busy at this time of year.” Schedules aligned this year, however, allowing Rubin to return to the Southwest Iowa Hot Air Balloon Days. Well the balloonmeister for the event Jim Gebhart asked me to come and he was also one of the people that helped train me to fly so, I like to hit the small-town, local Iowa events if you will.

As a pilot yes, but as a crew I normally went with my dad so it’s not my first time in Creston. What made you decide to come to Creston for Balloon Days? Really, I just know a lot of people that are there and it’s close to where I’m at now. I’m back at Simpson doing school, so I just wanted to get out and fly in a rally just to get used to it. What do you like to do in Creston when you’re not ballooning? Pretty much just hanging around with everyone else and meeting
new people. Balloon you’ll be bringing: “Tropical Sunrise.� It’s 90,000 cubic square feet. It’s a regular shape.
What is your favorite thing about ballooning? I just grew up around it so it was just something that was always a part of me. Since 1986, I think. I haven’t made every one, but I’ve been close. What made you decide to come to Creston for Balloon Days? There was a balloon race that everyone
was excited about when we first started applying and we decided to come to it and check it out. What do you like to do in Creston when you’re not ballooning? I’m guessing it’s gonna be the parade. Balloon you’ll be bringing: I’m not sure yet, we’re trying to decide which one we are going to bring. I think we are going to be bringing a balloon called “Champagne Supernova.� It’s a 65,000 cu-
bic foot racing shape balloon. What is your favorite thing about ballooning? Flying in the air is something I’ve always wanted to do since I was little, and I’ve just never gotten tired of it.

years. What made you decide to come to Creston for Balloon Days? I owned my own balloon back then and would go to different events across the state and that was always one of the main events for the last weekend of the season. What do you like to do in Creston when you’re not ballooning? That’s wide open. The parade is a good thing. Usually there is a football game on. Other than that, come down and enjoy the atmosphere. Balloon you’ll be bringing: I’m the balloonmeister. As balloonmeister I do not bring my own balloon because I’m the one calling the event for the balloonists to do. What is your favorite thing about ballooning? Getting out and flying and meeting people. Every time you fly you don’t have the same landing spot. If you miss your landing spot you could end up in someone’s back yard, so just meeting new people.

In 2001, the Federal Aviation Administration grounded all aircraft, which included FAA-licensed hot air balloon pilots, and the Southwest Iowa Hot Air Balloon Days was canceled. On other years, simple uncooperative weather circumstances prevented Griffin from flying in the event. But regardless, Griffin has come to Creston each year excited and prepared. “There’s nothing quite like it,” said Griffin. “Being up in the air, there in Creston, and enjoying the view, and the competition and the Griffin crowds.” Griffin doesn’t come with any crew members, as many pilots choose to do. Instead, he relies upon his sponsors

And while many pilots choose to fly alone for some or all of their flights, Griffin always takes at least one guest along for the ride. In the 40 years Griffin has participated, a first-place victory was undoubtedly the highlight. “In fact,” said Griffin, “Creston is the only balloon event where I actually got a first place. And that was in 1994, when I won the event. “We were sitting there by the college (SWCC),” said Griffin, “and there were balloons to the east and west of us, and neither of them were doing very well. So we just decided to go straight up, and descended toward the airport and managed to go right over the center of the X. The only one I ever won. “I’m sort of a fun-flying competitor,” Griffin continued. “All the younger pilots now use GPS, and laptops, and they get very technical — but I’m very old school. I don’t even use GPS. It’s always a challenge, but it’s always fun.” For a time, Griffin served as the event’s weather offi-

cer. He was responsible for reporting, recording and analyzing weather conditions for the event. He was aided by the event’s official “weather dog.” The weather dog assisted the weather officer in determining wind conditions. It would be taken to the airport tarmac, and onlookers would observe the effects of wind on the dog’s countenance. Key giveaways for windy conditions included excessive amounts of fur blowing, and ears flapping. “But eventually we got serious equipment,” said Griffin. “Though we tried to inject a little humor to add an extra dimension and have some fun with it.” The weather conditions themselves, according to Griffin, are often temperamental in Creston. “Creston has always been a very difficult area to fly,” said Griffin, “because of the change of seasons, and it’s in an up-slope condition at the airport. So you tend to get a little bit higher wind elevation and you can have some pretty swift winds right above the
surface.” Griffin’s balloon is named the Golden Griffin III. It is sponsored by Paul Fuller of PCSB. Of Creston, Griffin has nothing but compliments to give. “They just make the pilots and the crews feel very welcome,” said Griffin. “It’s been a real treasure — a real pleasure to participate in this event.”

Anywhere in Iowa is a great place to fly. It’s a great time of year with summer coming to an end, it cools off, but the conditions are pretty good for a good competition. It’s usually a little windy, which I tend to like more than it being slow.” This marks the first time since 2011 Rubin has been able to fit Southwest Iowa Hot Air Balloon Days into his flying

He said he enjoys the challenges the Creston event presents. “I really like flying into that airport,” Rubin said. “For no reason more than just history and having the event there all the time, or as long as I’ve known it, is cool. It makes it kind of challenging some of the tasks they run, where you have to get a bag on the runway.” All in all, Rubin is excited for his return to Creston. “I’m excited to get down there,” he said. “It’s always nice – work weeks are a little more fun when you have a balloon race at the end of it. I hope the weather works out and I hope we get some flights in.”
