‘A hometown Fourth of July’ brings games and contests of all kinds this year. n

For Ellen Gerharz, Creston Chamber of Commerce executive director, the Fourth of July means family, something promoted through the events of the national holiday to be celebrated Tuesday in Creston.

“It takes me back to my childhood of red, white and blue and a family holiday,” Gerharz said. “We want the Gerharz Fourth to be a lot of different things to a lot of different people.”

“A hometown Fourth of July,” this year’s theme for the 10,000 Crestonians patriotic celebration, is chock full of annual family events, like the parade, flea market and Friends of the Library book fair. Now add five more family-oriented events and you’ve got a fresh take.

The Fourth of July events begin today with the Creston: Arts gallery in the restored Creston Depot open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the Union County Historical Village open from 1 to 4:30 p.m., followed by the ninth-annual Elms Club Bike Night and street dance beginning at 4:30 p.m..

A new path can be blazed by runners Sunday for the annual Creston Half Marathon. The half marathon begins at 7:30 a.m., followed by the 5K at 8:30 a.m.

“It has grown, and I think people are excited that it’s actually going to be on the trail and around the lakes this year. So, I think that’s an added bonus,” Gerharz said. “I know Mindy (Stalker) has worked very hard at it and it gives another venue for people who are into running and walking.”

Chalk the Town will continue and the historical village will also be open Sunday.

A veteran’s appreciation breakfast will be available from 7 to 8:30 a.m. Monday at the mealsite at the restored Creston Depot.

Also on Monday is the farmers market from 4 to

6:30 p.m., the Creston Elks street dance from 9 p.m.

Monday to 1 a.m. Tuesday and the continued events of Chalk the Town, Creston: Arts gallery and the open historical village.

Then, throughout the Fourth of July celebration Tuesday, new and returning events are available for families to enjoy.

The flea market, located throughout uptown Creston, runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the Friends of the Library book fair, held FOURTH | 4c

This is the first fourth of July in nearly a century where fireworks are legal in the state of Iowa. While it is not legal to shoot fireworks off inside the city limits of Creston, officials are still stressing proper safety techniques to those who will be out in the country or elsewhere working with the pyrotechnics.

The state of Iowa has already seen a few injuries from fireworks being mishandled or instructions being ignored. Todd Jackson, Creston fire chief, stresses the importance of following instructions when using fireworks this holiday.

“Be educated,” said Jackson.

“Know how they operate, k n o w what the safety limits are, you Jackson know, no kids unsupervised. It’s some basic common sense stuff.”

“Check your tubes, know what you’re using, look at them in the daylight before you go at night and, if you need help, ask questions,” said Vonk.

Jackson is aware of the dangers of fireworks being illegally shot inside the city limits. While understanding the appeal, safety remains his biggest concern.

Patriotic music to complement McKinley Lake fireworks display

This Independence Day’s fireworks display will feature a KSIB-Creston Shooters special music broadcast.

Listeners can tune in to KSIB Radio on 101.3 FM, 1520 AM or via smartphone app from approximately 9:30 p.m. through 10 p.m. July 4.

The special broadcast will include patriotic and country favorites, including Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA” among other classic hits.

How did the broadcast first get started? Though the first of its kind to see airwaves in decades, Creston Shooters President Roger Nurnberg explains its roots.

“Years ago,” said Nurnberg, “and I mean years ago — one of the announcers that Nurnberg worked there (at KSIB) was on our team. Now this was clear back when the radio station was so tiny that it had to shut down when the sun set.

“But — and D.W. was his name — D.W. says one day, ‘You know, I’ve got the right

to start that station up for a community event. And I can do it remotely.’

“And so we all got excited,” Nurnberg continued, “and put two and two together and we had music in the park — and that was when the transistor was invented. Does that date you?”

later — Nurnberg has decided to revisit D.W.’s idea with the help of some new technology.

“Well,” said Nurnberg, “we don’t have the kind of sound system to actually produce a choreographed show, per-say.

But our idea was — ‘Hey —

we’ve got a radio station right here in town that has an app.’

And so we played with it a little bit, and went down and talked to Chad (at KSIB) and they thought it was a pretty good idea. So we’re going to try it again.”

What can listeners and view-

ers expect? Nurnberg offers a preview of what the Creston Shooters Pyrotechnics Association has planned.

“Creston is special for us,” said Nurnberg. “There’s no other show like (the) Creston show. Our team isn’t a joke.

We have built shells — and waterball stuff — that went the full length of the lake. We have fireballs that nobody else has. Stuff that you don’t normally see anywhere else.”

And for a special treat, the Creston Shooters have opted for a new type of firework.

“We’ve got shells this year,” said Nurnberg, “that we’re going to call ‘frogs.’ You shoot them out onto the lake, and they go ‘plonk’ and proceed to bob up and down, and turn different colors out on the water surface.”

The Creston Fourth of July fireworks display will begin at McKinley Lake sometime around 9:30 p.m., and is expected to run approximately 20 minutes. Nurnberg urges those interested in getting involved with the Creston Shooters to contact him at 641-202-0016.

at the mealsite this year, will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Also available for families to view are Chalk the Town business designs on the sidewalks and a large mural uptown. At the restored Creston Depot, the model railroaders will be running the trains on the west end while the Creston: Arts gallery on the east end will be open for viewing. Down the street, the historical caboose will be open for viewing from 9 a.m. to noon.

The annual parade begins at 10 a.m. and will run approximately 20 blocks along Adams, Montgomery and Mills streets.

“The Fourth of July parade is always special here because there are always so many people who want to participate and all the people who line the roads,” Gerharz said.

After the parade, entertainment shifts from uptown to McKinley Park, where you can find Lion’s Club bingo from noon to 9 p.m., the historical village open from noon to 4:30 p.m., and the annual Fourth of July skateboarding competition.

New events this year are a High Lakes Young Professionals bags tournament, game cart, pizza-eating contest, basketball tournament and music to coincide with

the evening fireworks show.

The bags tournament will be directly east of the historical village and begins at 1 p.m., with requested showup time half an hour prior and a $5 registration fee per person. Money will be put aside for future events held

by High Lakes.

The game cart will be at the park hosted by Barb Coenen. The games, balls, Frisbees and cards are free to loan with an ID. “We have a lot of families who go out to the park and do things, and this will be a nice addition as well,” Gerharz said. “I think it gives people something more to do in the park.”

The pizza-eating contest, hosted by Little Caesars, features the newest addition to the menu, the ExtraMostBestest pizza (a pizza with extra cheese and extra pepperoni). It will begin at 2 p.m. west of the bear statue in the circle drive.

The basketball tournament is hosted by Mark Rounds and will take place at 3 p.m. at the park’s basketball court.

There is a $5 team registration fee, and fees will go toward tournament costs. For questions, contact Rounds at 641-344-4209.

“I think it will just add to the overall Fourth of July experience,” Gerharz said. “I think it’ll just be kind of that celebrating the birth of our country, and it should be a festive holiday.

Music adds to that.”

“That’s the big problem when you get into shells and cakes and stuff like that,� said Jackson. “They really don’t belong in town. You know, when your neighbor’s house is 30-feet away, that’s just not a good situation.�

Fireworks outside of the city limits are legal under the new Iowa legislation.

When it comes to the bigger fireworks, making sure everyone is a proper distance away from the launching point is a must.

Potential risks involved with shells and cakes are failed launches, hot paper and blown up pieces or shrapnel falling out of the sky onto spectators, among other things. “Always make sure you check the wind direction,� said Vonk. “Make sure the wind is going away from the s p e c t a - Vonk tors.�

Enjoying the show from a distance is not only safer, but easier to view. Sitting a couple hundred feet away from the launch point forces spectators to watch at an angle instead of looking straight up in the air.

Cities and towns that have passed legal firework ordinance laws will be the test subjects for cities such as Creston, and others around the state, that have waited to pass any new laws.

The state of Iowa is monitoring incidents as well as how cities and towns handle the new laws. Fire marshals are keeping statistics of incidents and other issues that arise.

Concern has risen over sales to minors leading to unintended use of fireworks, especially when it comes to smaller fireworks that seem less dangerous.

Jackson and Vonk both mentioned even the smallest

fireworks need to be used properly. “Really it’s your kid’s stuff,� said Vonk. “It’s sparklers, it’s any of the small stuff that kids get a hold of. You know, even adults think because it’s small, you know, not a big deal.� “Certainly, you can go as simple as sparklers because everyone thinks those are safe,� said Jackson.

Failure to monitor a young child with something as small as a sparkler can lead to burns.

Sparklers burn at 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, which is hot enough to melt some metals.

Both parties agree being smart and reading instructions is the best way to stay safe. Make sure to let recently launched shells, cakes or artillery cool for a couple of minutes before moving or disposing of them.

Failure to do so could lead to a pyrotechnic being shot toward something or someone as opposed to straight up into the sky.

Game cart coming to McKinley Park

When Creston resident Barb Coenen visited Dallas, Texas, she saw something in a park that caught her eye.

What she saw was a game cart, where people in the park could check out lawn games and sports equipment to use in the park and then return when they were done using it.

“They would loan out a putter and a golf ball and you could putt on their putting green,” Coenen said.

“Or they would loan out a croquet set and you could set it up and play it. This is in downtown Dallas. I just thought it was the coolest thing ever.”

That got the wheels turning in Coenen’s head. Since the beginning of the year, she has been collecting games and equipment in hopes of creating a game cart for Creston.

That idea is becoming a reality. Coenen will have the game cart assembled and ready in time for the 10,000 Crestonians Fourth of July celebration Tuesday in McKinley Park.

Coenen presented the idea to a local organization, which in turn donated some money for Coenen to purchase more equipment and games for the cart.

“We’ll have some really fun things, some board games and card games,” Coenen said. “And not make it

something that’s mine, but it’s going to be, eventually, I hope, it will be at McKinley Park all the time. Then, whoever is having a family reunion or class reunion can check it out.”

Coenen said she has received several donations for the cart, in addition to donating several items from her own personal collection.

The game cart will include board games, card games, Frisbees, soccer balls, footballs and lawn games such as bags, giant Jenga and yard Yahtzee.

“It’ll be easy to find us,” Coenen said. “Just smell the funnel cakes and you’ll find us.”

To check out larger lawn games and board games, individuals will need to leave a form of identification so Coenen knows they will return the items. But, Coenen said, she will likely not require identification to check out Frisbees and soccer balls.

Tentative hours for the game cart Tuesday are 1 p.m. until 5 p.m., but Coenen said she will likely be at McKinley Park until 10 p.m. and will keep the cart going as long as she is there and people are using it.

Coenen said anyone with

leftover promotional Frisbees who no longer need those items can donate them to the game cart.

Beyond the Fourth of July, Coenen hopes the game cart finds a permanent home in McKinley Park so anyone using the park can borrow items from the cart.

“In the meantime, ... if they want to text me and say, ‘Can we borrow things? We’re having this event,’ they can contact me (at Maple Street Memories, 641-782-4560) and let me know they want to use it. There won’t be a borrowing fee.

“I just want it to be for everybody. I want it to be something that goes on and on and on.”
