CRESTON BOYS BASKETBALL Coach: Brett Watson, first year. Watson spent the past four years as the head girls basketball coach at ADM, after spending five years as an assistant on the ADM boys staff. Assistant coaches are Michael West and Todd Jacobson (freshman coach). Last year: 11-11 overall, 6-4 for fourth place in the Hawkeye 10 Conference. Seniors lost: Cole Thompson, Brandon Phipps, Maxx Walters, Cole Crawford, Jon Birchard, Carson Whittington, Evan Nielsen, Trey Benson. Returning letterwinners: Jay Wolfe, Sr. (18.6 ppg, third-team all-state); Alex Nielsen, Sr. (10.4 ppg); Christian Groumoutis, Sr. (3.7 ppg); McClain Haines, Sr. (3.0 ppg); Sam Hartsock, Sr.; Jake Miller, Sr.; Cooper McDermott, Jr. New prospects: Chris Foster, Jr.; Cody Crawford, So.; Ryan Kucera, Jr.; Seth Thompson, So.; Kyle Somers, So. Conference prediction: Watson sees last year’s top teams Harlan and Kuemper Catholic as being the best until someone proves otherwise. Glenwood, Denison-Schleswig, Atlantic and Lewis Central will also compete. “I always say this, if you’re good enough to compete in the Hawkeye 10, you’re going to be good enough to compete in Class 3A, period,” Watson said. “Because you’re going to see the best of the best. It’s going to be a very tough conference.”

Harlan was undefeated, Lewis Central and Shen won 17 games, Red Oak has a Division I (Bucknell) guard in Kate Walker and Carroll Kuemper is strong. We hope to compete in the upper group of a very strong field.”

Ford spent the past 18 years as assistant coach at Mount Ayr, while Wallace has previously been a head coach at BGM, Brooklyn, and has spent the past three seasons as junior wrestling coach in Mount Ayr. Last year: 17-11 overall record, fifth at Pride of Iowa Conference Tournament with six placewinners and two champions. Seniors lost: Dawson Knapp (third at sectionals, more than 100 career wins), Jacob Beamguard (third at districts), Erik Freed (sixth place at state at 138 pounds, Mount Ayr career wins leader).
