‘Let Freedom Ring’ brings another year of fun By IAN RICHARDSON CNA staff reporter

With the theme “Let Freedom Ring,” 10,000 Crestonians will present the 65th annual Fourth of July Celebration this weekend, continuing many of the same old-fashioned family favorites enjoyed in years gone by. Ellen Gerharz, executive director of the Creston Chamber of Commerce, said each y e a r Creston’s Fourth of July celebration Gerharz creates a classic Americana atmosphere, which she said is hard to find in larger cities. “It’s really an old-fashioned Fourth of July celebration, and that’s how we promote it,” she said. “A lot of new people coming in, they don’t see this in Des Moines or Council Bluffs or Omaha.” Uptown happenings Friday’s festivities will begin with a veteran appreciation breakfast at the mealsite from 7 to 8:30 a.m. The event welcomes veterans and their spouses to attend as a thank-you for their service.
Later at the mealsite, the Friends of the Library Book Fair will run 4 to 6 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. The model railroaders will be in the Restored Depot from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, and the caboose on Adams Street, which reopened last year, will be open 9:30 a.m. to noon Saturday. Friday night will be the Creston Half Marathon and 5K run beginning 6 p.m., as well as the uptown Creston:Arts gallery reception from 6 to 8 p.m. The Elks Street Dance will begin 9 p.m. and end 1 a.m. Saturday. The parade kicks off at 10 a.m. Saturday, and the flea market will go from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. McKinley festivities McKinley Park will be another hub of activity over the weekend, beginning with a family movie at dusk Friday. Saturday’s parkgoers can watch the classic and antique tractor pull from noon to dusk, play Lion’s Club bingo from noon to 9 p.m., see the sights at Pioneer Days at the historical complex from 1 to 4:30 p.m., and watch the Cub Scout mobile pedal carts from 2 to 4 p.m., the skateboard competition at 2 p.m. and the Boy Scouts and VFW flag retirement ceremony at 5:30 p.m.

If you find yourself in need of a cool treat, Old Tyme Power will be churning ice cream using an oldtime tractor motor from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The talent show, open to all ages, will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the bandshell. Big race atmosphere with small town hospitality By JAKE WADDINGHAM

Creston will hit the ground running for the Fourth of July celebration with the second annual Creston Half Marathon and 5K July 3. The city’s furthest running event has 42 participants signed up, with more expected to register by race day. “I’ve ran a lot of different races in Des Moines and other communities and it is nice to have a local race of this magnitude,” said Union County Development Association Director and runner Wayne Pantini. “We had great support along the trail and a lot of great volunteers to keep us going in the right direction.” Race Director Mindy Stalker said the biggest change for the 2015 event is an improved route for the 5K and half marathon. Stalker said both courses
present a fun, but hilly challenge participants can be proud of conquering. “The 5K distance is great, but if you have aspirations to go to that half marathon distance — even if you never want to do a full marathon — it is manageable,” Pantini said. “You can train for it relatively easy and their are a lot of good, free training programs out there to help you build up distance.” The half marathon is slated for 6 p.m. followed by the 5K at 7 p.m. You can register at www.crestonhalfmarathon.com. “Both routes have more trail,” Stalker said. “They both start in uptown Creston and they both go through McKinley Park and around the backside of McKinley Lake.” The 5K course heads back uptown to the finish. Half marathon runners take the Park-to-Park Trail out to the Green Valley dam, circle back to the Creston High School track and back down

True Time Racing, but Stalker said the event is favorable for every participation level. “I want this event to grow and to be an attraction for out of town people to come see Creston,” Stalker said. “I also want it to be an event Creston is proud of ... I think having it chip timed brings that element of a bigcity race M. Stalker to a small town.” Cost for the 5K is $25 and $35 for the half marathon. Packet pickup will be hosted by Curves, 217 W. Adams, Thursday and Friday. Participants receive a shirt, socks and finisher medal. The custom-made medals are designed by Bailey Fry-Schnormeier and her husband Blake. The round medals have the imprint from the bottom of a running shoe for texture and stamped with the race date. Fry-Schnormeier said the medals will have multiple colors applied with spray paint and a brush. “It is great we can incorporate a part of Creston and our art program,” Stalker said. “It made the medals mean something to me, as
opposed to just a normal finisher medal.” Stalker said she can always use more volunteers and encourages spectators to help add to the race environment by playing music or creating a fun theme at a water station. Blake and Bailey Fry-Schnormeier are just two people trying to bring art to southern Iowa. And, one way they’re doing that is through Creston: Arts’ Chalk the Town event for July Fourth. Chalk the Town is an event that involves volunteers creating chalk masterpieces on sidewalks in front of local businesses such as Creston Automotive, First National Bank and House of Pain. “It’s a wonderful, exciting event that businesses can take part in,” Bailey said. “We go around and create a chalk mural in front of the business to kind of promote the Fourth of July, and bringing people to their business and spread art into the community.” Chalk will be freely passed out at businesses the week leading up to Independence Day, as well as the day of, for people to volunteer their time creat-

Nurnberg estimated the old flag had been around since the 1960s, so construction of a new one was in order. “We’re b u i l d i n g Nurnberg it because this flag is a relic,” he said. “It was getting kind of decrepit, and we’d kind of patched it up.” Nurnberg said the new flag will resemble the old one, with a little more wave in its design. The volunteers Gerharz said the way that the strength of the volunteering has remained the same over the years, even as the faces have changed, is a testament to those involved. “I do think it speaks to the dedication of volunteers,” she said. “We’re the administrators at the Chamber, but basically this is an all-volunteer operation. People give up an hour or two hours to help so that the entire community can come in for our celebration.” Gerharz said the Cham-

created in front of the business sponsoring it, but some will be done along the parade route because the business is far enough away from the uptown holiday buzz. “We had a lot of students help the past two years,” Blake said. “We hope to get them involved again.” Chalk the Town is co-sponsored by Creston: Arts and Creston Chamber of Commerce, and also includes a community mural. “We have a community mural that will be done by people on the Fourth of July,” Blake said. “They’ll be given a little block, and they go and fill in their square.” The design volunteers brought to life last year was of the restored Creston Depot. This holiday, the design, which will be located in the parking lot of Iowa State Savings Bank on West Adams Street, is the same as what will be painted on the basketball court at McKinley Park. It includes a lake, hot air balloons and a train. “It’s going to be hard to beat,” Blake said. “That was what was hard this year, trying to think of something new.”
There were seven murals the first year of Chalk the Town, 16 murals the second, and 21 for the third year of the event. Proceeds from this year’s event will be put into an endowment. Maps are available for a walking tour of the different murals at all the participating businesses. Photos of the art will also be posted online. “I hope we have a lot of interest. We are definitely looking for volunteers, and if they would like to come help and chalk, they can contact us,” Bailey said. “I’m hoping we have nice weather, and the rain will stay away for a couple of days so people can really enjoy the murals.” For more information, contact Bailey at 641-7820979, or check out the Creston: Arts Facebook page online.
