Fontanelle EMT a longtime member of NV athletic staff

FONTANELLE — For more than 35 years, Ray Stewart has worked quietly behind the scenes as an emergency medical technician on the scene for Adair County athletic events.

He is also in his 45th year as a volunteer on the Fontanelle Fire Department, now one of seven EMTs working ambulance calls for Fontanelle and Summerset Township.

“Ray is always there to help somebody,” said Dave Huff, Nodaway Valley athletic director. “He’s never

worried about himself, the time it takes. He’s there to help other people be safe.

Besides being with us, he’s always on call for the Fontanelle Fire Department, too.”

While Stewart, 66, enjoys working without garnering a lot of attention, he is getting that attention this month from a state organization.

State award Stewart has been selected by the Iowa High School Athletic Directors Association (IHSADA) to receive its “Outstanding Sports Medicine Award” for his many contributions toward the welfare of students and athletes in the community.

The presentation is scheduled March 30 at the Marriott Convention Center in Coralville.

Huff said the public recognition is long overdue.

“What Ray does for us,

especially during our contact sports, is allow our coaches to continue coaching while he evaluates the injuries,” Huff said. “He’s a certified medical technician. He’s always thinking about the kids’ safety. He’s there daily, especially during football in the fall. He gets a stipend for being the trainer for football, but he’s volunteering a lot more hours than he’s getting paid for. He travels with the team. He’s part of the unit.

And it’s been that way since the days of Greenfield/B-F football under coach (Bob) Daut.”

Stewart, a retired heavy equipment operator for Adair County, graduated from Bridgewater-Fontanelle High School in 1965.

He played basketball and baseball at Southwestern Community College in 1967.

physical therapists at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, where he had been taking a high school athlete for rehabilitation after an ACL knee surgery. They allowed him to work with some of their patients’ rehab treatments.

Stewart served as a representative for Southwestern Community College in the 1980s on a State EMS committee, where he taught classes and visited many communities to speak about the importance of having an EMS system.

In 1982 Stewart began caring for injuries at Greenfield High School, now known as Nodaway Valley in a consolidation of B-F and Greenfield.

In the mid-1990s his certification was “grandfathered” in as Athletic Trainer Certified (ATC).

“It got started in Greenfield for GBF football in 1982,” Stewart said. “My dad was always a fireman, so I got to go on some calls with him. But I got interested in the medical portion, taking care of people. Then when I got on the (Fontanelle) Fire Department, I took over the EMS situation and pushed other people to get into it. For the schools, I’d go to football practice every night, basically waiting for somebody to get hurt. I’ve always enjoyed it.”

He’s more than willing to let someone else make an evaluation. He’s all about safety.”

Stewart has also logged many volunteer hours for the Fontanelle Fire Department, serving as fire chief for more than 20 years. He is still assistant chief, but spends most of his time making 50 to 60 ambulance calls a year.

“We’re all on call and we have a paging system,” Stewart said. “Whoever shows up for the call. We usually don’t leave until we have two EMTs on the ambulance, or a first responder. If Adair County (Hospital) ambulances are out of town, we back up Greenfield now. We do tiering back and forth with Greenfield. They have the paramedics, so they’ll come over here for something serious. We basically have Summerset Township and Fontanelle. Bridgewater has an ambulance, too.”

Ballfield work Stewart has also spent numerous hours with the youth of Fontanelle in baseball and softball leagues. A few years ago he was asked to oversee a major project in Greenfield — the building of new ball fields on the grounds of Adair County Health and Fitness Center, and refurbishing the junior high fields in Fontanelle.

“I really enjoy watching the local youths using the new softball and baseball fields,” Stewart said.

Stewart retired from the Adair County Secondary Roads Department in 2010 after working 43 years as an equipment operator.

He is still head softball coach and middle school girls basketball coach at Nodaway Valley. For several years he assisted a close friend, Ron “Fox” Clinton, in coaching SWCC softball.

with his wife, Sandra, of 45 years. She also volunteers as head scorekeeper for Nodaway Valley basketball and softball.

They are the parents of a daughter, Charity, and they have two granddaughters (Jessica and Sidney) busy in Nodaway Valley activities.

Creston volunteer sticks with firefighting and EMS ■

Sometimes people don’t know what they want to do with their lives, while others do. Jordan Nelson knew what he wanted to do immediately.

Nelson, 20, formerly of Orient, joined Orient Fire Department in 2011, and is now a volunteer firefighter Nelson with Creston Fire Department.

Fire department Nelson graduated from Orient-Macksburg High School and went on to earn a certification in emergency medicine from Southwestern Community College.

In September 2011, Nelson joined Orient’s volunteer department.

“I just kind of went up to the chief in

Orient one day and wanted an application, and he gave it to me,” Nelson said. “Got on, and I ended up loving it.”

Nelson was on Orient Fire Department until August 2012, when he left and joined Creston Fire Department.

“The best part about firefighting is just being around the people,” Nelson said.

“You always got somebody you can talk to about anything. ... (and) we got a good group of guys that make trainings always fun. They’re hands on, they like to help you learn because they want everybody to be knowledgeable of what we’re doing because we are in a very important profession.”

Part of something Nelson stuck with firefighting, he said, and ended up being part of something.

“I guess it’s just the fact of helping people,” Nelson said. “I get to help people in their time of need and not expect anything in return. I guess it’s just a good feeling.”

Nelson said he decided he wanted to be a career firefighter in November 2012, and continued his education to fulfill that desire.

“Most career firefighters, you have to have an EMT (emergency medical technician) license minimum,” Nelson said.

“So, I decided to start my EMT in January,

and when I did that, I got more interested in that than I was fire. EMS (emergency medical services) is a little more active than fire. You don’t always have fires, but you always have people that need your help medically. So, I decided to do that, and I really liked it, so I decided to further it and go paramedic.”

Nelson said his ultimate goal now is to be a flight medic, which is someone who functions in an aeromedical environment.

“Your mind is just blank. It’s an adrenaline rush,” Nelson said. “You don’t even think about it, you just do it.”

Rush At times, the rush of adrenaline is good.

Sometimes, though, that rush is something

that can be tough.

“My very first tractor fire, it was one of my friends from high school,” Nelson said.

After being part of Orient Fire Department for four months, Nelson responded to a call for a tractor fire with former Orient Assistant Fire Chief Jerry Sevier. He arrived at the station, and Sevier told him to jump in the fire truck.

“We went wailing through town with the lights and sirens and got on scene,” Nelson said. “He was just a real nice guy, told me what I needed to do. ... He let me handle the nozzle right away and told me what to look out for because at this time I didn’t really know what to look out for because I hadn’t been through firefighter 1 (fire training class) or anything.”

The tractor fire was the first time Nelson knew he wanted to stay in EMS and fire service.

However, sometimes the rush comes from a different facet of the service.

“My neighbor in Orient, ... my pager went off for a man that collapsed. He was in cardiac arrest. That was always a real tough one for me to suck down,” Nelson said. “Basically, we got the truck because we needed equipment, got on scene and he was laying there.”

Nelson said his neighbor was in cardiac arrest when he and other responders arrived, so they went through CPR with him before Adair County Hospital ambulance arrived. Nelson did chest compressions in the ambulance as they made their way to Greenfield.

“We got to Greenfield ER (emergency room) and I was still doing chest compressions on him,” Nelson said.

“We just couldn’t get him back. Probably the hardest thing was walking out of that ER room and telling his wife.”

But, even then, there are silver linings.

“She thanks me every time she sees me. She always asks my mom how I’m doing,” Nelson said.

Background Nelson also volunteers teaching CPR at local fire departments, and teaches children about fire prevention during Fire Prevention Week.

Nelson is a student at Mercy College of Health Sciences in Des Moines, with a planned graduation date of August 2014.

He is employed by Decatur County Hospital.

Nelson is engaged to Jaime Cox, and their wedding is set for June.

Helping pets find forever homes

Tara Arts give a new definition to “forever.”

Arts, a volunteer for Creston Animal Rescue Effort, or CARE, has taken home and fostered animals since being involved with the organization.

“I love it. I can’t stand not doing it. You know, I can’t even believe I was allowed to start doing it, because I started doing it when I was, like, 16, and I feel that was really young,” Arts said. “But, I guess Mycale (Downey) trusted me.”

Fostering One year after beginning her volunteer work for CARE, Arts, now 22, started fostering animals. Fostering means to bring an animal home and care for it before finding a permanent home for it.

“It kind of just started off, ‘The pound is full, can you take this dog home?’” Arts said. “And, it sort of morphed into, ‘This is a really scared dog and it’s going to get put down if you don’t take it. Will you take it?’”

Arts said she has to realize the animals she fosters will not be with her forever.

“I kind of joke that I have a hard heart,” said Arts. “I know that I’m there for a purpose, and that they’re not mine. And, that I’m going to love them and take care of them as if they were mine, but they’re not mine. I’m usually good about putting a wall up.”

Arts takes one animal at a time because she has adopted several already and space is limited. She keeps

the animal for an average of three months. There are several key things Arts said are needed before anyone can foster an animal.

“You have to be dog savvy, number one. And, again, have an ability to not get attached,” said Arts. “Obviously the room. Dogs of my own that aren’t going to hate the new dog. And, the ability to correct behavior.

Stories Several fostering stories come to mind for Arts, both happy and sad.

“A couple of years ago, someone gave us an elderly rat terrier mix. And, it had really terrible teeth. We kept having to take him in for cleaning. It was such a nice dog, and really active still,” Arts said. “He got along with my dogs well, and got along with people well.

Just the fact that he was 13 years old, nobody would adopt him.”

Arts kept Herbert the rat terrier mix for five months before telling Downey she was unable to foster him any longer. He was transferred to Animal Rescue League in Des Moines.

“While I don’t know it for a fact, he never showed up on their website, so I assume he got put to sleep,” Arts said.

However, there are also success stories that keep Arts motivated.

“Mycale texted me and said, ‘I have a foster for you.’

And, she gave me some details about it,” Arts said.

Downey sent a picture message of the animal for Arts to see.

“I’m like, ‘I’m adopting that dog. It’s not even going to get to my house and I’ll adopt

that dog,’” said Arts.

The dog was Sparrow, a white Great Pyrenees mix.

“It had, I assume, been hit by a car, and her front left leg had to be amputated,” Arts said. “The vet actually recommended euthanizing her because she believed Sparrow would get to be over

her volunteer work.

“One of my friends adopted a dog from the shelter, and I went with her to pick up the dog,” said Arts. “She wanted to volunteer, so I said, ‘Hey, I’ll go along with it.’ We went every Saturday for a long time, and eventually she lost interest. And, I just kind of found my niche.”

For seven years, Arts has volunteered at CARE for two hours on Saturdays, and the first Sunday each month. She attends most of the fundraisers.

“My mom does a lot of volunteering with art things,” said Arts. “I’ve always been kind of raised to give back.”

She graduated from Creston High School, and is currently a student at Southwestern Community College. She is interested in pursuing psychology.

Downey and Arts sought opinions from other veterinarians, who said the surgery would be a success. Sparrow survived.

“I’ve had her since May, and she’s doing very well,” Arts said. “You’d never know she had three legs.”

Both kinds of stories are what make Arts keep volunteering.

“The success stories make it worthwhile, and then the not-success stories kind of just make me want to try harder and focus more on education,” said Arts. “I am a firm believer that there is a person out there for every dog.”

Berger gets it done

For John Berger, 53, of Diagonal, it was his children and love of his community that eventually lead him to volunteer on the Ringgold County Fair Board of Directors.

“Originally, my kids got involved in the 4-H program here, so come fair time, this was where I was and this is where they were,” said Berger.

With his children — Wendy, Shane, Kaylin and Jenna — showing rabbits, dogs and handcrafted goods as children at the Ringgold County Fair, Berger decided he needed something to do, too.

“I knew a couple of the board members and started helping out with this project and that project,” said Berger. “And, it was something I had an interest in.”

Fast forward 13 years later, and Berger is still going strong.

“I’m the type of person who wants to be active in promoting the community and the fair,” said Berger.

“Check back down the road

and I’ll probably still be here.”

For Berger, it’s not about the recognition — he just likes to bring the community together.

Ringgold County Fair The Ringgold County Fairgrounds, 2214 Highway 169 in Mount Ayr, hosts a number events each year.

The Ringgold County Fair - a five-day event in July - features a rodeo, animal shows and exhibits, children’s activities such as mutton busting, live entertainment, commercial vendors, craft exhibits and a “snack shack” which offers a variety of food.

Aside from the fair and rodeo, the fairground also hosts all-terrain vehicle races (ATV), demolition derbies and mud runs — mud runs being Berger’s specialty.

At mud runs, participants race stock trucks and specialty vehicles with 7001,000 horse power around the dirt track.

Finding people to do these types of things is getting tougher and tougher,” said Berger.

While turning a profit is one determining factor of a successful event for Berger, it’s not all about the money.

The Ringgold County Fair and other events held on the fairgrounds is a way to bring together the community and showcase what its residents do.

“The greatest reward are the people,” said Berger.

Berger said, without the support of their sponsors, there is no way the board could pull off an event like their rodeo, which draws in the largest crowd.

“I’ve met a lot of interesting people,” said Berger.

“You start to know these people and if nothing else, by osmosis, you’re going to learn things about people in your community.”

Getting it done Berger said what makes him a good volunteer is his versatile and manual skillset.

“I’m not one to sit around and do nothing,” he said.

said Berger is a great asset to the organization because of his mechanical and electrical capabilities.

“John is very mechanical and I don’t have many mechanical talents,” said Miller.

“But, if I want something done, all I have to do is go to John because he’s got the talent.”

According to Miller, Berger works year-round answering inquiries about the mud runs and coordinating participants and vendors to take part.

“When it comes time, John just takes over, gets it done and pulls it off with good success,” said Miller. “I don’t ever have to worry because he takes care of it.”

To Berger, success results from the community members doing what they can to enhance and improve the community — and everyone has a talent that can be useful.

“I just know things don’t happen without volunteers,” he said.

Community effort helps local man produce Lenox Rodeo

LENOX — Cowboys have reason to celebrate, thanks in part to Allen Dukes.

Dukes, a Lenox native, is president of Lenox Stock and Saddle Club, a volunteer organization responsible Dukes for preparing and hosting Lenox Rodeo. And, thanks to this organization, Lenox Rodeo won United Rodeo Association’s (URA) Rodeo of the Year 11 times since 2000.

Rodeo Dukes has been volunteering with Lenox Rodeo for about 40 years, ever since high school. He went from a volunteer cutting weeds or painting to part of the board 11 years ago, and then he was elected president this year.

But, to Dukes, it isn’t a project just for a board.

“This is a community project. Everybody that is a member, which we have roughly between 80 and 90 members, we just all pitch in and make sure everything is ready to go for the three days the rodeo is down here,” Dukes said.

Once he became part of the board, though, little changed.

“I just went from a person that was doing what needed to be done to looking at the overall condition of everything,” Dukes said. “Looking at, you know, how are we going to advertise, ... how much money are we going to spend there.”

Community effort The rodeo in Lenox, according to Dukes, is time and effort spent by members of the community to host the three-day event.

“You know, it’s community. It’s projects that everybody pitches in that are members. Most of us have been around it for so long that it’s almost second nature to us,” Dukes said. “It’s just everybody who’s part of the club pitches in and gets everything done.”

According to Dukes, members of Lenox Stock and Saddle Club come from anywhere, as long as they are willing to volunteer.

“We’re getting to be a club of older members. We really need to get some younger members so we can show them the ropes,” Dukes said.

Community, though, doesn’t just mean your neighbor. Community also means within the family. Dukes’ wife Debra is the treasurer, and his daughter is involved with the rodeo by helping organize the dance.

“We have a rodeo parade the Wednesday before the first performance, so that’s one less headache we have to put up with,” Dukes said.

Volunteers for the rodeo host evening breakfast during the organizing of the rodeo for other volunteers. The breakfasts are Friday and Saturday nights.

Volunteering Dukes got involved with volunteering when he was in high school, and has stayed involved around his full-time teaching position.

“I got involved with it when I was in high school.

There was a few of us that we diced that we wanted to look

into it, we wanted to help the older guys in the club,” Dukes said. “We were young enough to do the heavy stuff.

We did that, and we just kind of stayed around it.”

Dukes is a teacher at Lenox High School, and summer is a good time for him to work on the rodeo during summer break.

“I have time during the summer that I can go over and do things,” Dukes said.

“We all depend on each other to get things done, but, again, it’s a lot easier for me to get work done.”

Members begin preparing for the rodeo in May and work through July, when the rodeo begins. Volunteers average between 60 and 80 hours of work during a summer.

first one at the track each Saturday night arriving at about 4 p.m. to open the gates.

He sets up the public address system and starts up the computer system. By 5 p.m., he’s at the pit gate checking in all the drivers for the race. At 6 p.m., he’s in the scorer’s tower preparing for the first race.

“He doesn’t miss a Saturday night,” Baldwin said.

Heaton keeps all races for the evening organized including communicating with the drivers through headsets.

“It’s a challenge to keep

track of 24 or so cars,” Heaton said. “But, it’s a challenge I enjoy. But, mostly I just like being around the people at the track. I also like the challenge of the numbers and software.”

The track season starts in April and concludes sometime in September.

“Burton never gets the credit he deserves,” Baldwin said. “He’s the model citizen in regard to how to be involved in your community. He does so much for Corning. I don’t know how he does it. I’m busy, and I only volunteer for a couple different things.”

Main Street Heaton has lived in Ad-

ams County for all but three years of his life. Those three years were spent in Sioux City while studying at Morningside College.

That said, he’s familiar with main street in Corning, and for the past 15 years he’s been dedicated to improving that area of his hometown.

He’s on the Main Street Board of Directors. He’s also on the Main Street design committee. During his tenure, they’ve purchased 17 planters for image enhancement purposes in the community.

“We want Corning to be an attractive place to shop, live and do business,” Heaton said.

Heaton said Corning’s main street is still “holding together” far better than other rural areas because of the dedication of the community. He’s also been part of the central park renovations in Corning whereby new sidewalks, fountains and seating were constructed and installed.

Heaton and others also volunteer for city park cleanups.

“You wouldn’t believe how many leaves, branches and garbage we haul out of that park,” Heaton said.

Church choir Heaton has been a member of the Corning First Presbyterian Church since 1983. He’s spent almost all that time on the church choir. They perform three Sundays per month. Heaton has also served on the church’s governing board for the past six years.

Icarian Players Burton has also been part of the resurgence of the Icarian Players who had their first production in more than a decade last fall. They did the production “The Boys Next Door” — which features four men with various mental disabilities who live in a group home. The play — set in Boston — provided a humorous commentary on the men’s lives.

The play was held at the Corning Opera House.

Scouting leads to busy schedule for Anson

In just a little more than two years, Joe Anson already made his mark on the community.

Anson, 49, has three sons involved in Scouts — from Cub to Boy Scouts.

He lives in Creston with the boys, wife Tina and stepdaughter Erin Creveling.

The Scout program has become his main extracurricular activy.

“I’m a Webelo leader. ...

They’re the boys getting ready to transfer from Cub Scouts to the Boy Scouts,” Anson said. “We started something new this year

where the Webelos are allowed to go on all the Boy Scout campouts as long as a parent goes with them.”

Anson’s son Tyler, 11, is a Webelo, Logan, 8, is a Cub Scout, and Dylan, 13, is a Boy Scout.

“Dylan’s a Boy Scout,” he said. “He’s a senior patrol leader with the Boy Scouts right now.”

Anson works with the boys on advancements, including camp outs and tying knots to art projects, such as creating sculptures with clay.

signed off on them to advance,” he said. “Then, they start Cub Scouts in the first grade — one through fifth grade — sixth grade they move up to Boy Scouts.”

Anson has been a Webelo leader for two years, but this isn’t his first stint with Scouts.

He was a Tiger leader in his hometown of Muscatine.

“They learn how to use a knife properly. That’s an important thing,” he said. “They get a whittling badge. Every time they do something wrong with their knife they get a corner cut. If they get all four corners cut, they have to go through and re-earn the whittling badge.”

Anson said there is quite a lot of difference in the leadership as the boys move through Scouts.

“In Boy Scouts they run the troop,” he said. “The leaders are there to observe and to keep control of it. In Cub Scouts, the adults run the pack. We’re trying to get them to where they start making decisions.”

Anson said Scouting has many benefits for youths.

“I was a Scout as a kid,” he said. “Dylan wanted to do it right away down here because he was the only Tiger and I was his Tiger leader. I just think it’s great for the kid, to get them in the right direc-

tion.”

Currently, Anson is helping organize a Scouts flag retiring ceremony to be held on the Fourth of July in McKinley Park.

“We’ve got a lot of veterans in town, and I just think that would be awesome to let the public know,” said Anson. “That’s a hair-raising experience to go through one of these ceremonies.”

Geocaching The Scouts are also getting involved with geocaching, and Anson will be the geocache leader. Geocaching is a hide-and-seek event, using Global Positioning System (GPS) to locate hidden objects and is conducted worldwide by various individuals or groups.

“I’ve found, I think we’re up to 17 or 19 here locally,” he said. “I was telling the leaders about it and they said, ‘why don’t you be the geocache leader, and we’ll start.’

“All the Scouts are going to make their own geocache, as groups, and we’re going to hide them through town,” he said.”We go out geocaching as a family, and it’s a blast.”

Anson said he got involved with geocaching through a Scout leader from Johnston.

“He was in Alaska, and he said he had a couple hours so he went out geocaching,” Anson said. “He said, ‘I hid something,’ and he said three

to five days later he’s in Seattle, and he said, ‘I had time so I went out, and I was going to do some there’ and the second or third one he went to he found the one he had put in Alaska. It had already been to Seattle.”

Beyond Scouts Anson’s involvement with youth programs doesn’t end with Scouts.

As the owner of Anson Construction, he is experienced in all types of building.

He volunteered to help build the backdrop for the November musical at Creston High School.

“That was fun,” Anson said. “Ms. Warner (director) asked me.”

Daub shines as GRMC Auxiliary volunteer

Lois Daub is entering her 15th year of volunteer work with the Greater Regional Medical Center’s Auxiliary Board, but has never held an officer position.

That’s because the board has never needed officers to conduct meetings or maintain the auxiliary’s productivity.

“We just take turns conducting the meetings and we know what our jobs are,” said Daub. “We get along famously without them.”

Daub’s main focus is with the gift shop. A committee of five volunteers — including Daub — select the items to sell in the gift shop, work at the counter and encourage walk-ins to purchase their inventory.

“It’s something that I love,” Daub said. “You have to guess what they might want to buy.”

When an F2 tornado damaged GRMC in 2012, the gift shop was damaged and had to be closed for repairs.

“It wasn’t closed very long, though,” Daub said.

“They got it repaired quick.”

Fundraising The money earned by the gift shop is put toward a variety of projects, equipment and scholarships for GRMC. Five $1,000 scholarships are given out to area students who are interested in studying a health-related field in college each year.

The high school students are selected from within a 50-mile radius of the high school.

The auxiliary also helped fund the purchase of a fetal monitor for the obstetrics department, a new sign near the hospital’s driveway and new CPR equipment.

“We support projects for specific departments, especially for something that wasn’t in the budget,” Daub said.

The cost to join the GRMC auxiliary is a yearly fee of $5. There is no age requirement or commitment to a number of volun-

“You can volunteer as much or as little as you want,” Daub said. “If you just want to donate the $5, that’s ok too.”

In addition to the work by the committees, the entire auxiliary is constantly holding fundraising events.

One of the group’s main events is a golf tournament in Creston.

There are currently more than 350 volunteers in the GRMC auxiliary.

Their next luncheon is slated for April 7.

The auxiliary nominated Daub for her countless volunteer hours and leadership work with the luncheons and gift shop.

She was the first-ever recipient of the Shining Star Award from the auxiliary during a conference in Des Moines in 2011.

“I was nominated by the group for contributing to the success of the organization,” Daub said.

Windy Acres Antiques Since 1994, Daub and her husband Rex have been actively collecting a wide variety of collectibles and antiques for their store.

Windy Acres Antiques officially opened in November 2005 and is set up in a series of themed alcoves.

The items range from vintage linens and decorative dishes to apothecary

bottles and cast iron banks.

“I try to have a variety of things,” Daub said about her shop, which is open Tuesdays and Thursdays. “Sometimes, someone wants a pretty dish, or someone wants furniture.

Some of it is collectibles.

Not all of it is antique.”

Together, the Daubs attend a majority of local estate sales and travel south to Kansas City to look for new inventory.

Her husband often refinishes and paints some of their finds, giving new life to furniture, frames and other items.

In addition to the store, Daub enjoys maintaining a 5.2-acre yard with numerous “whoops” flower beds and spending time quilting.

“It’s a whoops garden, like ‘whoops, I forgot I planted something there and it came up and there is another one right there by it,’” Daub said.

Biere’s retirement doesn’t include sitting

After talking with friends and colleagues who really know 78-year-old Arlan Biere — retired social studies teacher for Creston School District — a common theme surfaced.

“He doesn’t sit around much,” said Don Butler, longtime friend of Biere.

“He has to be moving, doing something productive whether it be volunteering for church or in the community or spending time with his children and grandchildren.”

Biere retired from the school district in 1996, and since then he’s delved into several different volunteer programs including Habitat for Humanity, Union County Historical Society, Greater Regional Medical Center information guide and recently took on the role of treasurer at Salem Lutheran Church.

Only one thing slows him down.

“I do sit down for lunch,”

Biere said.

Biere grew up in Auburn, Neb. — located about 60 miles south of Omaha. He was one of five boys in a farm family. He had parents who “weren’t afraid” of keeping him busy. His father George was a handyman and — as a young adult — Biere was eager to learn those trade skills.

Those skills have proven important throughout his professional life and now into retirement. Biere spends a large amount of his volunteer service hours with Habitat for Humanity.

He joined the nonprofit organization at its outset in 2002. The mission of the organization is to provide decent, safe, affordable housing for people in need in Union County. The organization has built four Habitat houses since 2002.

Biere has volunteered to do a variety of different tasks on those four houses including painting, installing a sump pump, framing, putting up dry wall, shingling and installing cupboards to name a

few.

“He’s always up to date and informed about what’s going on with the construction of the Habitat homes,” said the Rev. Jonathan Watt, president of Habitat for Humanity. “He attends

every meeting and when something comes up, he is always there to lend a hand in all facets of Habitat.”

Historical society Biere is a graduate of Peru State College in Peru, Neb. He majored in history

and physical education. He was a social studies teacher in Creston for 30 years at Burton R. Jones Middle School.

Biere’s always been interested in history, which is a main reason he became

a board member for the Union County Historical Society in 2010. His favorite buildings in the historical complex at McKinley

“I was educated in a country school until seventh grade,” Biere said.

“My wife taught at a country school. We both have ties to country schools. So that’s one of my favorite areas of the complex. The church is another. It’s from Spaulding in Union County and is very unique.”

Biere is the complex’s handyman, helping preserve the buildings throughout the year.

“There is no project too big or too small for Arlan,” said Sharon Snodgrass, historical society board member. “We have about 16 buildings out there and, sure enough, something will need fixed and Arlan’s right there. And, if he can’t fix it, he’s resourceful and will find someone to help

him. He’s just an agreeable guy. He’s someone you can depend on.”

The historical complex is open 1 to 4:30 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Other volunteering Biere and his wife Carolyn both volunteer as informational guides at Greater Regional Medical Center twice per month.

Also, Biere recently took on responsibilities as treasurer at Salem Lutheran Church. He’s also their handyman. His most recent project was tearing out a closet so that a handicap accessible bathroom could be constructed.

But, his biggest fulfillment — hands down — is his hours spent with his wife, three children and six grandchildren. His grandson Tim attended college and played football at Kansas University from 2008 to

2012. He was a tight end on the football team and graduated in 2012.

Another grandchild Kaitlyn is now attending college at Indian Purdue at Fort Wayne. She’s a pitcher at the college and Biere and his son Darin traveled to Austin, Texas, in February to watch her play.

“He’s so proud of all the grandkids,” Carolyn said.

“He brags about them to everyone, almost so much

it’s embarrassing. We have grandkids in both sports and music. They’re are all very involved and we’re proud of all of them.”

Greenfield couple helps complete two projects with a similar goal

GREENFIELD — Before Jay and Catherine “Cath” Howe met, Jay laid the groundwork for his future wife’s largest renova-

tion and volunteer project of her life, the opera house on the square in Greenfield.

In 1979, Jay — along with other progressive community members such as Ed Sidey — worked to place several of the buildings in Greenfield on the historical preservation list and tried

to motivate the public to start a renovation project.

“That was important,” Jay said. “We worked with the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs. It took quite a while.”

Despite the time spent to save the historic locations, Jay and other volunteers were not able to gain

momentum to start a large renovation project.

“They tried to motivate the public to become more involved,” Cath said.

“There just wasn’t the interest at that time.”

About 30 years later, Jay and Cath’s dream of restoring the prestige of the town’s square is becoming a reality. The couple has been the core part of two volunteer groups to attract visitors to Adair County.

Cath was the chief grant writer of the $6.2 million opera house renovation project now known as the Warren Cultural Center.

Just up the block, Jay is the

co-owner of another rejuvenated building, Hotel Greenfield.

Separate projects, same goals Cath moved to Greenfield in 1994 to be closer to Jay, who was practicing law with Cath’s brother Willard Olesen.

Together, the couple has four children and one grandchild.

Cath said the design and location of the opera house caught her attention when she first came to Greenfield.

“I remember coming downtown and just being intrigued by the opera house building,” Cath said.

“At that time, I believe it was vacated. It just looked like it was dilapidated and falling apart.”

While Cath’s attention was on bringing new life to the opera house, Jay was also looking for a way to bring more visitors to Please see HOWE, Page 17A

Adair County. His focus landed on a building just up the block from Cath’s project at an old hotel.

“We started the hotel project after a survey indicated there was a need for a hotel in the Adair County area,” Jay said.

Jay’s project kicked off in 2009 and was shortly followed by Cath’s remodeling project of the opera house.

“As they came together and both projects were underway at the same time, what she was doing and what I was doing turned out to be complimentary,” Jay said. “The work she does gets sustained by the hotel project.”

Grants paid for a majority of the grants for both projects, but it was in incremental amounts.

Waiting for the money to come in made the projects a drawn out process, but also allowed for attention to detail.

Jay hired local contractors and a professional who had experience restoring hotels. Cath also used a variety of local contractors and professionals to help restore the multinational auditorium to the way it looked when it opened in 1896.

“We all shared in wanting to be sure that this building was saved and would become an important cultural center, not only for Greenfield, but for the county and the region,” Cath said. “The fact that a whole block basically has restoration ... that’s just a perfect draw to become a destination.”

Hotel Greenfield opened for business July 2011. The Warren Cultural Center had its first show July 2012.

majority of her retirement working with the Warren Cultural Center, both have other volunteer projects in the community.

Since 1973, Jay has helped plant about 50 to 200 new trees in Adair County every year with the Tree Forever-Greenfield project.

“We started because of dutch elm disease wiping out hundreds of elm trees,” Jay said. “When those trees went, it scarred the town.”

Each year Jay helps various 4-H clubs, Scouts and FFA chapters organize to plant the trees, water and mulch.

Cath served a number of years on the Adair County

Empowerment Board. She played a major roll in getting Greenfield to be recognized as a Main Street Iowa community through the Iowa Department of Economic Development.

But no matter the size of the projects, Jay and Cath agreed that their efforts along with the effort of countless other volunteers as been aimed toward to future.

“That was part of the vision,” Jay said. “It was informal, but yet most of

the people that are wanting to see the community improve recognize there would be rhythm between the businesses that would draw people to all of them.”
