By KYLE WILSON Now that we’ve all awaken from one of the coldest winters in Creston history, thoughts have turned to summer fun like boating on Three Mile Lake or shining up the motorcycle for Elm’s Club Bike Night this June.

Thoughts have also turned to replacing your rusty old grill or smoker. But, with so many varieties, how do you choose? Wood pellet grills continue to gain in popularity because of their “set it and forget it” convenience and capacity to easily produce tasty smoked meats and vegetables. Wayne Lents with Union County Cattleman Association has owned a Traeger Little Texas wood pellet grill he purchased in Creston for four years and uses it at least twice per week grilling meats like steak, brisket, turkey and loins. “Put it like this, if mine broke my wife would buy me another one,” Lents said, laughing. Cora Schrodt, assistant manager at Boyd Appliance in Creston, said the Traeger grill has a digital dial you can set between 150 and 400 degrees. The grill heats up in three to four minutes, then the food can be placed and you can walk away, if need be. “You don’t have to babysit your food,” Schrodt said. “I put the meat on, mow the yard and then come back after and the food is done. It’s a convenient grill. It’s almost impossible to burn up your food because it never comes in contact with the flame. It’s very forgiving to those who get sidetracked or busy with life in the evenings.” Traeger grills come in five different sizes ranging from $300 to

A 20-pound bag of pellets will last about one month. An equally-appealing wood pellet grill is the Green Mountain wood pellet grill sold at Cook Video and Appliance in Creston. Jason Cook, service tech at Cook’s, said the operation of Green Mountain grills are similar to that of Traegers. Cook said Green Mountain is a smaller company, though, that only sells grills through dealers. “You can’t buy their products online,” Cook said. “They are probably the best customer service company I’ve dealt with. I talk to the same guy almost every time I need assistance.” Cook said Green Mountain grills are clean burning and can be used by the most novice user — man or woman. “Women especially love these grills because there aren’t any flare-ups. It’s almost impossible to burn your food with these grills,” Cook said. Green Mountain grills range from $379 to $1,000. Cook’s sell wood pellets at the store for $16 per 28-pound bag and include gold blend flavor (oak, hickory, maple), fruitwood blend and mesquite blend. Cook adds the grills come with a remote allowing users to control grill temperature from the comfort of your own home. Cook also kicks in a cover and bag of pellets upon purchase. CL

Getting a new edge on yard work this summer By JAKE WADDINGHAM Spring is finally here. The warmer temperatures and rain showers are bringing new life to yards, flower beds and gardens, but all the growth means yard maintenance is starting up again.
“No job is the same, no rocks are the same, no borders are the same,� Bill Winterstien said. “There is a lot of hands-on work ... It’s not a formed process, it is a free-hand design.�
There is a new way to cut down time spent trimming along borders and reorganizing bricks that get knocked out of place.
Border Magic comes with a 10-year limited warranty that covers cracking, fading and peeling. The only upkeep is scheduling a reapplication of clear sealant every two to three years.
Border Magic — a continuous concrete border — is meant to replace plastic, wooden railroad ties and individual bricks for landscaping edging. “You’re not messing with the long-term maintenance of different kinds of landscape edging,� said Winterstien Construction co-owner Melissa Driskell. “It also gives a nice surface on the back to hold your river rock, mulch or dirt.� Winterstien Construction offers free on-site estimates for Border Magic and can usually give customers the quote on the same day.
Jeanette Gildsig of Creston had Border Magic poured in October along her driveway and ground cover to give it an updated look and keep the grass from growing into her evergreens. “I love it and I have had a lot of people comment on it,� Gildsig said.

Winterstien, Driskell and their crew make the custom boulders in-house from start to finish. The size of the boulder and the amount of detail in the design dictate how long it takes to finish and overall price of the boulder. “They give us the information they are wanting on the rock and then we help determine the size,” Driskell said. “We use a 3D program that shows the size of the rock, and we can change the shape of it, color of it, all on the computer and basically sell the rock based on what it looks like on the computer.”
“We now have the rights to several collegiate schools in the area,” Driskell said. “That is an exciting new branch for the product.” Driskell said they are also able to design mailboxes, firepits, benches and headstones with the Boulder Designs technology. CL
A smaller boulder can be completed in a couple of hours while a large boulder with a lot of detail can take more than 10 hours to complete. One of the more popular Boulder Designs is smaller boulders with school mascots graphics. Who doesn’t like the hint of lemon in a quick bread or cookie? I do!!!
This Lemon-Almond Bread has the density of a pound cake but with a subtle blending of lemon and almond. It is then topped with a lemon glaze and slivered almonds. These Blueberry Oatmeal Cookies are infused with blueberries with a tart and sweet lemon glaze. Either one of these recipes will make a delicious treat with your morning coffee.
Almond-Lemon Bread For the bread: 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour ½ tsp. salt 1 tsp. baking powder 1 cup sugar 2 Tbsp. lemon zest ¾ cup almond milk or regular milk ½ cup canola or vegetable oil 2 large eggs, slightly beaten 1 tsp. fresh lemon juice 1 tsp. vanilla extract 1 tsp. almond extract

For the lemon glaze: 1 cup powdered sugar 1 ½ Tbsp. fresh lemon juice 1 tsp. almond extract 3 Tbsp. sliced almonds, for garnishing the loaf
Preheat oven to 350° F. Spray a 8 1/2 x 4 1/2 loaf pan with cooking spray and set aside. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and baking powder. In a small bowl, combine sugar and lemon zest. Rub together with your fingers until fragrant. Whisk into the flour mixture. Set aside. In a separate medium bowl, combine the almond milk, oil, eggs, lemon juice, vanilla, and almond extract. Slowly add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients. Stir until combined. Pour batter into prepared loaf pan. Bake for 55-60 minutes, or until toothpick comes out clean. Place the loaf on a cooling rack and cool for 15 minutes. Loosen the sides of the bread with a knife. Carefully remove loaf from pan. Let cool completely on wire rack. While the bread is cooling, make the lemon glaze. In a small bowl, combine powdered sugar, lemon juice, and almond extract. Whisk until smooth. Drizzle the glaze of the lemon almond bread. Sprinkle sliced almonds over the bread. Cut and serve.
Blueberry Oatmeal Cookies with Lemon Glaze 1½ cups all-purpose flour ½ tsp. baking powder ½ tsp. salt 1 cup unsalted butter, softened 1 cup light brown sugar 1 cup granulated sugar 2 eggs 2 tsp. vanilla extract 3 cups old-fashioned oats 1 cup dried blueberries 1 cup powdered sugar juice of one lemon Preheat oven to 350°, adjust the oven racks to the middle position and line baking sheet with parchment paper. Whisk the flour, baking powder and salt in a small bowl and set aside. Cream together the butter and both sugars on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, and then mix in the vanilla. Stir in the flour mixture with a wooden spoon or large rubber spatula,

then stir in the oats and blueberries. Be careful not to break the blueberries while stirring. Using 2 heaping tablespoons per cookie, roll the dough into balls and place them onto a cookie sheet, spacing them at least 2 inches apart. Bake until the cookie edges are just turning golden brown but the middles are still quite pale, about 12-14 minutes. Cool the cookies on the baking sheet and then transfer to a wire rack. Once cookies are cool, mix the powdered sugar and lemon juice together. Depending on your desired consistency, you can add more or less powdered sugar. Drizzle glaze on top of cookies and let sit until glaze has hardened. Store cookies in an airtight container.

Making a Local marine equipment supplier shows products

Now that the sun is shining its hot beams down, thoughts of beaches, icy drinks and water sports are on the brain. One place to go to get set for the warm months is marine services and supplier Big Boyz Toyz, 900 S. Division Street. “We’ve got everything,” said Tyler Wolf, owner of Big Boyz Toyz. “A huge variety of tubes to choose from, tow ropes. ... We keep an assortment of kneeboards, wakeboards and things of that nature that are more fun things to do.”
Regular products Big Boyz Toyz offers other products, such as large flat tubes, hot dog-style tubes, different wakeboard styles and inflatable water trampolines. “The most popular thing we sell is the flat, big, round tubes that you can fit a lot of people on,” Wolf said. “They pull behind the boat really easily, and if you get one person on a big tube like that you can sling them out on the side and get them to catch air. You can have a lot of fun that way.”

“Whoever can lay out in the sun, get a tan, do whatever they do,” Wolf said. “It’s stable enough to use as a lounging type.” Wolf said sales and activity out on the water “really start ramping up” in May, especially during Memorial Day weekend, because of rising water temperatures. Another popular item Big Boyz Toyz sells is an electric air pump, which is portable and can be used to inflate and deflate the tubes instead of hauling them fully inflated.

Big Boyz Toyz offers a variety of products, but two different ones are paddleboards and floating foam pads.
As with other things, water sport equipment requires maintenance.
“It’s (paddleboarding is) not really a water sport, pull behind the boat-type, but it’s something people will enjoy because they can do it without purchasing a boat,” Wolf said. “We’ve sold several. It’s not something that sells a lot. ... It’s starting to get more and more popular, but not very many have done it around here yet.”
“The boats, we recommend coming in in the spring to get them checked before you use them, what we call springerize, make sure everything is ready for the season so there’s no surprises,” Wolf said. “As far as the tubes, just a good, cool, dry place. Make sure they’re dry when you put them away in the fall, and don’t let them get moist. Just want to take good care of them.” Big Boyz Toyz also sells rapair kits, patches and glues in case issues arise. CL

The foam lily pads are less popular in southwestern Iowa, also. “We do sell those. Around here, there’s not as many people actually buy them for the lakes around here,” Wolf said. “We sell more of those to the people who come in from out of town who have private lake houses.”

Creston’s summer half marathon will aid recreational trail maintenance
By JAKE WADDINGHAM Seasoned runners and newcomers to the sport will have a chance to lace up and hit the trails together to fundraise for Creston’s recreational trail system.
... people will have to use the road to get across the dam,” Carr said. “The trail will pick up in the parking lot on the east side of the dam and run along the perimeter of the lake.”
“When I started running in 2005, I got to thinking, ‘What could we do to give back to the trails around Creston?’” said Mindy Stalker, co-owner of Curves.
The addition will end in the Green Valley campgrounds. The old beach house will be demolished during the trail construction and it will be recycled into the basework for the trail.
In 2013, Stalker wanted to host a race that complimented an event already taking place in Creston. She sent out several text messages and organized a casual 5K run July 3 to kick off the Fourth of July celebrations.
Carr said he has seen quite a few people using the trail for exercise and hopes by extending the trail into the campground will increase its visibility and use by park visitors.
This year Stalker plans to still hold a 5K, but wants the main attraction to be a half marathon that highlights the trails in Creston. The races are scheduled for a 6 p.m. start July 3.
“The response I have had has been positive,” Carr said. “A lot of people have been asking when this part of the trail is going to happen, so I think people are looking forward to having it done.” CL
“I knew July 4th was already packed with activities, so there would be no way people would want to try to schedule in a half marathon,” Stalker said. “I did an evening race in Ames and loved the atmosphere afterward.” Stalker is still mapping out the course, but is planning a spectatorfriendly route that starts and finishes in uptown while utilizing the trails. “I thought about all of the people that are willing to travel to do road races,” Stalker said. “My goal is to create some funding to support the trails and if somewhere along the way someone finishes their first 5K or half marathon in Creston, that is even better.” Runners and trail supporters can get more information and register at www.crestonhalfmarathon.com. Early signup is $25 for the 5K and $35 for the half marathon.

A new smartphone application will provide trail users across the state of Iowa the ability to find and document their experiences on the state’s more than 18,000 miles of multiple-use trails. Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation Communication Director Hannah Inman said the free application named Iowa by Trails will launch the central Iowa version May 1. Information for the entire state will launch during RAGBRAI. The current version — designed by Shift Interactive — is only available for the iPhone, but Inman is hopeful fundraising and the design for the Android version will be completed this fall. Creston High School graduate Matt Glynn, 45, helped design the app. “It creates a whole new experience and allows people to start looking at trail use in a different way,” Glynn said. “The user can add photos so people can see actual photographs of the trail and points of interest along the way.”

KSIB Radio expects at least 250 tractors for their third annual tractor ride across southwest Iowa
Smoke will fill the air on Adams Street in Creston this summer when orange, red and green antique tractors assemble in uptown Creston for the third annual KSIB tractor ride.

Chad Rieck, general manager at KSIB Radio, expects 250 to 300 registered tractors to line up the for event slated June 7. One of those riders will be 67-year-old Rich Wenzig of Creston operating a red 1958 Ford Diesel tractor.
The tractor ride event begins in uptown Creston with a 6:30 a.m. breakfast at the restored Creston Depot. The riders take off at about 8 a.m. from the intersection of Adams and Elm streets. “There will be three groups based on the speed of their tractor,” Rieck said.
“This event keeps on growing,” Wenzig said. “There were 175 tractors the first year and now they are expecting almost 300. People like these rides because they get to see the countryside, create friendships or socialize with friends they haven’t seen in a while.”
Riders will head northwest to Carl — located in Adams County with a population of 149. They’ll take a pit stop for drinks and snacks in Carl served by members of the United Methodist Church.

Riders will then head southeast to Orient for an afternoon stop before making their way back to Creston by mid-afternoon (See complete map of the route, right. Rieck said the ride will feature tractors from the early 1930s all the way to new tractors with cabs and air conditioning. Rieck said the entire 72-mile ride will be on pavement. “It will all be on hard surface,” Rieck said, “which was hard to do when planning this route because there are a lot of gravel roads and not many major highways in southwest Iowa. But, these guys spend a lot of time and money restoring these antique tractors and they don’t want to deal with dust or rock chips.” Rieck said pre-registration deadline was May 15. However, if you want to participate in the ride, you can still register at ksibradio.com or by calling the station at 641-782-2155. “We won’t turn anyone away,” Rieck said. Rieck said the only “rules” for this ride are participants must have a valid driver’s license, their tractor must go a minimum of 10 miles per hour and have rubber tires. Also, no buddy riders are allowed unless there is a seat on the tractor specifically designed for a traveler. Rieck gives his father Dave credit for getting this event organized. “I’m not comparing it to RAGBRAI,” Rieck said, “but you do get that same feel when our tractor ride goes into these small communities. The people welcome you to their town. It’s a fun event for the communities and the tractor riders. It’s an event we hope to continue doing for many years.” CL

Elm’s Club Bike Night promotes community and a good cause. By SARAH BROWN Dozens of motorcyclists and revelers will flood Elm Street this summer for the sixth annual Elm’s Club Bike Night. The event was started by Elm’s Club owners Gus, Mike and Donna King of Creston. Donna describes Bike Night as one big party. “It’s an event that we created so we can do an outdoor party and involve the whole community,” Donna said. “Some people come up just to look at bikes, some come for the meal, some come for a drink and some come because they think they are going to miss something.” Each year since its inception, Elm’s Club Bike Night, which is held the Friday before Fourth of July, has grown — attracting motorcyclists and enthusiasts from Winterset, Des Moines, Omaha and beyond. This year’s event is June 27. “Obviously, it’s a show and tell for the bikers because everybody is so proud of their motorcycles, as they should be,” Donna said. “Some of them are pretty fancy.”
Local benefit
Some people may have reservations about attending Bike Night, but Donna said it’s a fun, family-friendly event. Starting at 5 p.m., a disc jockey plays for a a crowd of people who are eating supper, which includes potato salad, baked beans
and barbecued pork grilled by members of the McKinley Park Restoration committee. Donna said 100 percent of the proceeds from Bike Night food sales, which amount to more than $6,000, benefit McKinley Park. “That (cause) was just the one nearest and dearest to our hearts,” Donna said. “Because, that’s where we all hung out as kids.”

north onto Elm Street. “We have had no problems with kids or young people there until about 8 p.m.,” Donna said. “But, then you can see the crowd kind of change. Not that we tell people they have to get their kid out of there, but people just know it’s time to make the shift.”
“People walk around, eat, drink and dance. It’s fun.” Donna said many people attend for the chance to visit with old friends. “It’s fun to see people you haven’t seen in a long time,” Donna said. “Because,

We don’t put up with anyone who puts up any static at all.” As the event continues to grow, Donna said no changes will be made. “What we have works,” Donna said. “If we got too big ... that would take the fun out of it.”
By the time the band is ready to start playing at 9 p.m., a line has formed at the outdoor bar and party attendees flood the street to mingle, dance, drink and people watch.
When all is said and done, Donna said she’s hot, her feet and back ache and she’s deadtired.
An added benefit for attendees are the free give-aways from Harley Davidson, Budweiser merchandise and other goods from liqour vendors. Donna said “it was like Christmas” opening the boxes of items donated by the vendors. And, they just hand it all out to whoever is in attendance.

GRMC Offers More to Southwest Iowa Gary Krauth of Creston was a livestock farmer in southwest Iowa for 51 years. He retired in 2012. And right away, he began enjoying that retirement — playing golf two to three days per week at area golf courses in Creston, Corning, Lenox and Afton. But, late last summer arthritis in his left hip began causing him serious pain that would eventually keep him off the golf course for the remainder of 2013. “The pain was bringing me to my knees,” Krauth said. “I had to quit playing.” The 71-year-old Krauth needed a hip replacement. So, he visited Greater Regional Medical Center and eventually consulted with orthopaedic surgeon Dr. William Ralston. Krauth had surgery with Ralston Oct. 14 at Greater Regional.

“The surgery couldn’t have gone any better,” Krauth said. “We really don’t know how lucky Gary and Sandy Krauth we are to have two surgeons like Bill and Dr. (Damian) Mizera in our community. These two are at the top of their games. They may be the two best in the Midwest.”

Krauth spent one full week in recovery at Greater Regional after the surgery. His wife Sandy was right by his side. “We were only a couple minutes from home,” Krauth said. “I got special attention from the Greater Regional staff that you don’t get at other hospitals. Meanwhile, Sandy could run home if she needed and was even able to sleep in her own bed. She wouldn’t have been able to do that in Des Moines or Iowa City. There, she would have been sleeping on a cot.” Krauth worked with physical therapists through the winter months, gaining strength in the new hip. By Christmas, he was walking easily with the help of a cane and by January, he was walking unassisted. Then, by early April this year, he was cleared to return to the golf course. “I’m pain free,” Krauth said, “and back on the golf course. You should have seen me today. I was even hitting my irons well. I just keep getting stronger in that left hip. I can’t thank Dr. Ralston and Greater Regional enough. My quality of life is back 100 percent.”

Creston:Arts summer of fun

Beginning this June, Creston:Arts volunteers are branching out beyond their gallery walls to encourage creative interaction among Creston residents starting with a summer art camp for children entering grades first through eighth.
The lineup Creston:Arts camp will offer two full weeks and a third week of individual workshops; June 9 to 13, 16 to 20 and 23 to 27. The first week of camp will be lead by Creston High School Art Teacher Bailey Fry-Schnormeier. Fry-Schnormeier said her projects will mainly be recycled and upcycled projects which will only limit students by their imagination.
Lessons during week three will teach students how to make an upcycled storage container during “Boxing Day,” how to stamp, stencil and tie-dye fabric such as old T-shirts and an “altered book project.” During the altered book project, students will manipulate a book by adding page elements, folding and cutting pages or sculpting with the pages.
Learning outside of the box Creston:Arts summer art camp is a three week art program to teach students how art transcends the canvas or paper and can be made from just about any material. Most importantly, students

For many students, making art hardly feels like work. However, through the process of creating sculptures from paper mache and found objects, coloring textiles, painting and drawing, students also exercise discipline, listening and communication skills while learning practical tasks, such as quickly absorbing complex instructions, measuring materials for projects, problem solving and visualizing solutions. Zachary said one of the main goals of the program is to broaden how people view art and how to access supplies.
“During the first week, students will explore the multitude of possibilities of turning odds and ends and recyclable materials into treasured 2-D and 3-D works of art,” FrySchnormeier said. Brian Zachary will be teaching a variety of techniques for manipulating paper in week two. Zachary said some projects include learning to sculpt with paper mache and creating collages, and students will even learn to make their own paper.

Zachary said the art camp is a great way for artists in the community to volunteer their time and talent. “There are a lot of talented individuals who don’t necessarily have a credential to teach in the schools,” said Zachary. “I think passion often outweighs a degree. This (camp) allows these artists to pass on their gifts.”
