Tracing history Mormons’ trail to Utah includes Union County settlement

While it’s more than 1,000 miles from Salt Lake City, Utah, there’s plenty of Mormon history to observe in Union County and the surrounding area.

The Mormon pioneer run to Salt Lake City began in 1846, when Brigham Young and his Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints followers were driven from Nauvoo, Illinois, on the banks of the Mississippi River.

Along their way, Young and his followers established settlements and planted and harvested crops for later emigrants. During the winter of 1846-47, the group wintered in Iowa. In the spring of 1847, Young led a group of Mormons to the Salt Lake Valley, which was then outside the boundaries of the United States, later becoming Utah. The Mormons were fleeing persecution, first in Missouri, and then at Nauvoo.

Several locations in Union and Adair counties are marked as Mormon Trail crossings through grant-funded efforts coordinated by the Iowa Mormon Trail Association.

As they entered Potawatomi territory, the emigrants established a semi-permanent settlement they named Mount Pisgah. A settlement of Latter-Day Saints lived there from 1846 to 1852. It is located in Union County northeast of Afton along the middle fork of the Grand River. It is about 40 miles northwest of the Garden Grove Mormon settlement.

The trail proceeds west past the modern towns of Orient, Bridgewater, Massena and Lewis before establishing settlements along the Missouri River in the present-day region of Council Bluffs and Omaha.

“Through the ISTEA transportation enhancement grants we put up the wagon wheel trail signs throughout the area,” said Jane Briley, East Union teacher and board member of the Iowa Mormon Trail Association. “You see several locations, many on gravel roads, depicting where the Mormon Trail crossed. We also have interpretative panels at three locations in the county that were on the trail. One is at Mount Pisgah, another is at the Three Mile Lake campground, and the other one referring to the ‘big prairie’ north of Creston is at the Green Valley State Park campground.”

Mount Pisgah was established for the poor and others who were unable to proceed farther west in 1846 because of poor health and other challenges. Accordingly, they built living quarters, fenced, plowed and planted crops.

The 170-acre Mormon Trail Park, in Adair County, includes a 35acre lake and camping facilities. Mormon Trail Park is located 1 1/2 miles east of Bridgewater at 2828 Delta Avenue.

Longtime Union County Board of Supervisors member Bob Brown owns property at the Mount Pisgah site and frequently leads historical tours of the cemetery and settlement grounds. He shows tourists deep wagon trail ruts still evident from the Mormons’ westward journey more than 160 years ago. Signs depict the location of the historical site along Highway 169 2 miles north of Highway 34 at 170th Street

Brown shows visitors how to use metal “divining rods” to find underground burial sites and cabin foundations. The rods move when held above those sites due to disruptions in the magnetic composition of the disturbed soil. Mormons also used the rods to discover underground water sources.

“Historians believe the settlement consisted of 3,000 to 5,000 people during those years,” Brown said, “with a total of about 70,000 people passing through on their way to Utah. The creeks in the area — Three Mile, Twelve Mile and Four Mile — referred to the distance from this settlement. Two of those were later developed into large lakes and a public water source for several counties.”

Local groups quilt for socialization, charity

Creating a quilt takes hours and hours of tedious work, sewing pieces together and quilting all the layers together.

But for those who love it, quilting is a time for relaxation and fellowship.

“It’s our social club,” said Donna Thaden, a member of the Presbyterian Women Quilters, who gather every Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church in Creston to quilt and socialize.

The old-fashioned art of hand quilting provides the Presbyterian Women Quilters plenty of time to sit around a piece quilting and conversing. And, when they need a break, they take a timeout to sit and enjoy coffee, food and fellowship.

Patches & Pieces Quilt Guild in Creston does machine quilting rather than hand quilting. But, otherwise, the quilt guild is similar to the Presbyterian women in that members use their meeting time as a time for socialization.

“A lot of times when we meet at guild time, we’re not quilting,” said Barb Hudson. “Most of the time, it’s fellowship, show and tell, showing what we’ve all done and then putting these challenges out there. Once in a while, we’ll gather through the day and have a sewing day. But, most of the time, guild just meets for the fun and then we do things in our own small groups.”

“For us, it’s socialization,” said Pam McCampbell. “We have to eat.

We talk.”

There’s plenty of work being done, as well.

The Presbyterian Women Quilters still hand quilt every quilt they work on.

Hand quilting is a dying art, as more and more quilters move toward machine quilting.

Hudson and her neighbor jointly own an 18-inch quilting machine. Hudson still owns an 8-inch quilting machine in her house, but said quilters are “just like guys – we want more power!”

While the art of hand quilting is becoming more and more a thing of the past, quilting, in general, is booming.

According to Hudson, quilting became popular again around 1976. Shortly thereafter, in the early 1980s, the Presbyterian Women Quilters was started at the church by a group of women that included Jean Hoyt, Florence Lucas, Elizabeth Custer, Betty Hudson, Vonda Long and Louie Huss.

Current members include Phyllis Buck, Martha McAuley, Iggy Main, McCampbell, Debbie Norman and Thaden.

At its height, the Presbyterian Women Quilters had about 15 members attending its weekly gatherings.

“The quilting world has just grown,” said Hudson. “There used to be two national quilt shows in the United States.

Now there are several. Iowa is very fortunate. There’s over 100 fabric stores in the state of Iowa and Iowa is not that big.

Ladies go crazy to go hit different stores to buy more fabric.”

Salem Lutheran Church in Creston and Cromwell Congregational Church in Cromwell also have quilting groups.

One thing that ties all four groups together is their work for charity. All four groups have donated quilts to different causes.

While the Presbyterian Women Quilters now focus more on raising money for the First Presbyterian Church, in the past, they have sent quilts with missionaries to Russia and donated quilts to Quilts of Valor.

Patches & Pieces Quilt Guild is working on quilts for Kaden’s Kloset, which gives quilts to children in foster care.

“They get a lot of baby quilts because there’s a lot of programs out there for babies,” Hudson said. “But, for the kids that they’re too small for, they get left out. Our challenge for the year is for everyone to make a bigger quilt, like for a twin-size bed, so these kids can go to their new home with a quilt.”

The guild has also donated quilts to the hospice house and has donated proceeds from quilt raffles to Greater Regional Medical Center’s cancer area and to MATURA. Patches & Pieces Quilt Guild includes about 50 members, with about 30 of those members being active regularly. Guild meets once a month.

Hudson, who grew up wanting to work in a fabric shop because she loved fabric so much, lives and breathes quilting. It is such a large part of her life that when her husband, Mike, built an addition to their house last year, he left the room open for her to hang quilts on the walls and over the railings that enclose a cutout in the floor that overlooks a pool table on the ground floor.

“It’s not a cheap hobby, but you have something to show for it when you’re done,” Hudson said. “We always say if you just go golfing, you have nothing to show for it later.” SV

“Awesome” is what I will say about these two burger recipes. I’m always looking for something a little different and these fit the bill. The flavors go so well together. I will make these again and again - enjoy!

BACON DOUBLE-CHEESE BURGERS WITH CHIPS

In a large bowl combine egg, onion, parmesan cheese, ketchup, garlic, basil, salt and pepper. Add ground beef and bacon; mix well. Shape into four 3/4-inchthick patties.

Grill patties on the rack of an uncovered grill directly over medium heat for 14 to 18 minutes or until temperature reaches 160°, turning once halfway through grilling. Add a slice of cheese to each burger during the last minute of grilling.

Toast buns on the grill. Serve burgers on buns topped with pickle slices and potato chips, if desired.

1/4 cup panko bread crumbs 1/4 cup chopped red onion 1 Tbsp. Jamaican jerk seasoning 1 tsp. chopped fresh cilantro 1/2 tsp. salt 1 lb. ground turkey 1 Tbsp. olive oil 4 ciabatta buns, split Combine coleslaw mix, diced peach and red bell pepper. Stir together mayonnaise and 2 Tbsp. preserves. Stir into coleslaw mixture; cover and chill until serving time.

In a large bowl, combine egg, apple, panko, red onion, jerk seasoning, cilantro and salt. Add ground turkey; mix well. Shape into four 3/4-inch-thick patties.

Brush patties with olive oil.

Preheat grill to medium-high. Place patties on lightly-greased grill rack. Cover and grill 14 to 16 minutes or until internal temperature reaches 165°, turning once halfway through grilling. Grill buns, cut-sides-down, directly over medium heat about 2 minutes or until light brown. Serve each burger on buns topped with 1/4 cup coleslaw mix. Serve remaining coleslaw on the side.

Snapshots in The sunshine and greenery McKinley Park offers is more than just a fresh breeze and a merry-go-round. The natural environment also offers a vibrant backdrop to accent photos taken at the Union County Historical Village, a place many people go for learning, fun and photography.

The historical village, a complex of various historical buildings and items, allows developing and professional photographers the opportunity to give their photos a vintage edge.

But, aside from the greenery, the historical aspects of the village allow photographers to play around with the vintage and rustic styles available to them.

The historical village is made of 17 separate buildings, seven of which are historical buildings from other places in the county. Buildings include a house, barn, schoolhouse, church, signal tower and log cabin.

“I know a lot of people will take photos on the caboose that we have there, either on the steps or the back part of the caboose,” Francis said.

“I’ve seen them taking pictures around the cabin before.”

“A lot of people go take photos there,” said Steve Francis, Union County Historical Society boardmember.

“I’ve gone there different times just to work, do maintenance and cleaning and stuff, and I would guess there’s probably three or four photo shoots there a week in the summertime.”

Francis said the harness and barber shops there are also good places to take photos because of the front porch with hitching rail. He also said more buildings are availble if the village is open during visiting hours.

Francis said photographers like to use the backdrop of the historical village and McKinley Park in general for family photos, wedding portraits and the like.

The village is open to the public generally from Memorial Day to Labor Day on Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

“I think people like to have a rustic background and some of our buildings, the barn and some of our other buildings, have kind of a barnboard, rustic appearance to them,” Francis said. “We’re trying to get a little more greenery around there, too.”

To make the historical village more attractive, Francis and the others plan to have perennial flowers planted around the various buildings. He said he hopes it makes for a more attractive background for photographers, bringing them in for their photos.

“If we’re open, there are the other opportunities, like the blacksmith shop or the fire engine,” Francis said. “Different things like that can be used for props when we’re open.”

One local photographer has taken advantage of the vintage surroundings at the Union County Historical Village. Shelbi Northwick of Creston began a photography business in 2015 and enjoys using the local landmarks as backdrops.

“I have been interested in photography since I was in middle school,” Northwick said. “I like photography because it’s an art form that captures a split second or helps others see my point of view. I look at things differently than others and photography helps me express that.”

Northwick decided to make a career out of her artistic hobby, taking senior photos, pet portraits and vintage pin-up portraits. The buildings and historical memorabilia allow her to expand on her photography.

Here are some photography trends for 2017, ranging from technology to techniques.

• Simplistic: Some websites explain simplicity comes from making the photo itself easy on action, while others say the editing process should be short and sweet. Either way, the consensus is similar: less is more.

• Black and white: While color pops catch the eye, in a world full of color sometimes black and white is more eye catching.

• Candid photography: Posing for photos is one thing. Taking candid shots is another. Whether it’s proposals, day-to-day living or a special occasion, getting that perfect snapshot of a person without the forced pose brings that loose, “real life” feel to photography.

“I go to McKinley as often as I can,” Northwick said. “Some of the historical parts are handy for a vintage backdrop.”

• Pops of color: Black and white is trending in 2017, but so is adding a burst of color or pattern. A bright color or unconventional pattern draws the eye to that spot on the photo, grabbing the audience’s attention immediately.

One photography trend tied to the historical village is taking photos in natural habitats, rather than in studios. At the same time, color is an important part of the photo, and green is making a huge pop in photos. The greenery of the park, plants and nature in general give the historical village a blast of color outside of the rustic brown wood and painted red and white norms.

• Film: The art of photography using film has dropped off in the age of iPhones and Instagram, but the trend is making a comeback. This trend, however, requires a specific knowledge of how to use light in the photographer’s favor and create a “one-shot” photo.

Another trend in photography is using real film. While this may not make it to certain places, Northwick’s photography grasps the essence of film with the sepia tones and lighting throughout her photos. BP

Summer is barbecue season, both in backyards and in competitions.

Summer is just around the corner, which means the sizzle of fresh meat on the grill and aromas of charcoal, seared meat and barbecue rubs will be quick to follow.

The team began preparing meat at 4 a.m., cooking all morning long on a reverse flow smoker built by one of the team members from scrap metal.

Summer provides the perfect opportunity for barbecues, whether it be in your own backyard, at the pool or beach or even in an area competition.

Burnt Reynolds has grown in its five years as a team. What started as a small group has become a team of close to 10 members.

Whether you’re barbecuing in your own backyard for your friends or cooking for judges at a competition, local barbecue experts say the biggest key to a good barbecue is fun.

After reading an article about a competition in Winterset, Burwell decided to create a team.

Ryan Burwell and Ryan Hoyt are members of the local barbecue team Burnt Reynolds. As a team, Burnt Reynolds travels to several competitions in the Creston area and further.

But, no matter what, they’re always having fun.

“Really, win or lose,” Burwell said.

“We all said at the very beginning, if this becomes not fun, we’re all quitting,” Hoyt said. “Fun and cold beer, good friends.”

The Burnt Reynolds team spent a recent Saturday barbecuing for an event at Creston Elks Lodge. It was a day full of barbecuing and jokes among the team members.

“We thought of some really horrible names. Burnt Reynolds came around to be funny, and it stuck,” Burwell said. “Four of us went up there, and the next year we did it again. We slowly started adding people who like to do it.”

Since then, Burnt Reynolds has become a fan favorite at barbecue competitions and a successful team.

Hoyt said the team has come home with as much as $1,200 in winnings from a competition in the past.

Their favorite part of competing is drawing a crowd.

“To watch people walk by us and see how mean we are,” Burwell said. “We’re short with each other and growly. But every time we turn something in, we huddle together. That’s just kind of how we are.

People swear we hate each other.”

“Not to say we’re professionals by any means, but I think we’re the perfect team to watch because we’re very disorganized,” Hoyt said. “It may look like total chaos, but there’s a method to our madness.”

At competitions, Burnt Reynolds smokes brisket, pork butt or pork shoulder, pork ribs and chicken. There are prizes for each individual category and for an overall winner.

The team spends hours preparing the chicken, while the rest of the meats take around two hours to prepare with multiple team members working on things.

From about midnight until 8 a.m. on competition days, Hoyt said the team is fairly relaxed. Every couple of hours, someone will throw a few more pieces of wood on the smoker.

But, by 8 a.m., team members start getting nervous as the clock ticks down toward turn-in times, which typically begin at 10:30 a.m.

“We have a whiteboard up on the camper with our turn-in times and we have a big clock,” Hoyt said. “A couple of clocks have got smashed.”

“That would be the part when people go by and say, ‘You actually like each other?’”

Burwell added.

Bryant McCabe of Creston doesn’t compete in competitions. Rather, he just barbecues in his backyard for family and friends.

He’s been using a smoker for about eight years after talking about it with other people who have smoked meat.

It’s the perfect summer or fall activity for McCabe.

“I enjoy being outside and enjoying the weather,” he said. “Watching football is always a great pairing with a smoke or barbecue session, as well.”

McCabe said the different woods, rubs and sauces make for a unique smoke or taste. He mostly smokes chicken, either wings or chicken breasts for shredding, and sometimes, a whole chicken. He also smokes brisket and pork loins.

While the Burnt Reynolds team refuses to use barbecue sauces, Hoyt said the woods can make a big difference.

“Around here you’re fairly limited on wood species,” he said. “You can get oak, but a lot of people use post oak down south, hickory. If you can find an orchard, you can get apple or pecan. Down south, they use a lot of peach wood and pecan. Pecan, you can definitely taste the pecan smoke in it. Hickory, for us, is just kind of a no-brainer because we have a guy that gets it for us. It gives a good flavor. Fruit wood, you have to add a hardwood to it to get your BTUs up.”

Whether it’s the Burnt Reynolds team barbecuing for competition or McCabe in his backyard, they all agree on what side dishes and beverages enhance a barbecue.

“A cold adult beverage, cheesy potatoes and cole slaw are just a few of the regulars,” McCabe said.

“Beer, of course,” Burwell said. “Cole slaw is always good at a barbecue.”

“We’re kind of known around the barbecue circuit for our French fries,” Hoyt added. “We have people stop at competitions we’ve been to, the three years running, ‘You guys making French fries tonight? When will they be ready? OK, I’ll be back in a little while.’”

DUTCH OVEN Aside from the grill or smoker, there’s another outdoor cooking method.

Randy Vicker of Creston began cooking with a Dutch oven about five or six years ago after seeing someone else cooking with one.

After deciding to give it a try, Vicker fell in love with it.

“I found some pretty good recipes and it seems to work real well when you’re out camping,” Vicker said.

Vicker said he likes the simplicity of cooking in the Dutch oven, an iron pot that uses hot coals underneath the pot and on top of the lid to warm the contents of the pot.

“It’s really simple. Just try to keep your heat even.”

“There’s not much to it. Usually, unless you’re baking, if you’re just cooking meat or potatoes or something, you’ve got to put about 2/3 of the coals on the bottom and 1/3 on the top, or the opposite if you’re baking,” Vicker said.

One of his favorite dishes to cook in the Dutch oven is Dutch oven potatoes. The dish includes onion, green pepper, mushrooms, bacon, about five pounds of sliced up potatoes and plenty of cheese, making for a hodgepodge of textures.

The dish takes about an hour to cook, stirring every 15 minutes, plus an addition 15 minutes to get the coals ready beforehand.

TIPS Getting started with a Dutch oven is easy, according to Vicker.

“Just find yourself some good recipes,” he said. “You can find them all over on the internet for Dutch oven cooking. You want to clean it before it cools down, otherwise it gets pretty stuck on.

Always keep your pots oiled up so they don’t rust would be the main thing. Store them somewhere where it’s dry.”

Burwell and Hoyt said starting with a smoker can sometimes be made too complicated.

“A lot of people go crazy on smokers and things,” Burwell said. “We all started off with stuff at Wal-Mart to see if we liked it, and it’s worked well for us.”

Burwell advises not to use lighter fluid, but to use a charcoal chimney instead.

Hoyt said some people have a misunderstanding of what it means to smoke meat.

“I think people have the misconception smoking means your smoker needs to be billowing white smoke out. That’s not the case,” he said. “A lot of people will fire their smoker up and think they need more smoke in there. You take your meat out and it has a smoky, nasty taste to it. You want a good, hot smoke.”

Burwell said most of the barbecue teams at competitions will help you and give you advice.

“You don’t need to spend a boatload of money on it,” Hoyt added. “Practice and keep practicing.

That’s how we did it.”

Vicker said the best advice he can give is this: “The big thing would be to have somebody to clean it up afterward!” SV

OLD-FASHIONED DUTCH OVEN POTATOES 4 slices uncooked bacon, cut into bite-sized pieces 1 Tbsp. vegetable oil 1 medium onion, sliced 5 pounds medium potatoes, sliced 1/2 cup chopped mushrooms 1 can cream of mushroom soup 1/2 cup sour cream 8 ounces cheddar cheese, cubed or shredded

Cook bacon in Dutch oven until nearly done. Add onion and cook until light brown in color, stirring occasionally.

Add potatoes and stir. Cover and let cook until potatoes are tender, about 30 minutes.

Add mushrooms, cover, and cook 3 to 5 minutes.

Add mushroom soup and sour cream. Cook 2 to 3 minutes longer.

Spread cheese on top, cover and remove from heat. Let stand 5 to 10 minutes or until cheese melts.

Creativity and passion drive all involved in SWCC music program The School for Musical Vocations at Southwestern Community College is home to students from all over North America. From California to Pennsylvania and as far north as Canada, pupils travel thousands of miles to join a program renowned for its appeal.

But not all have to.

Megan Masters, a piano major, and Chris McCutchan, a voice major, both traveled from less than an hour away to join the program, but feel all the same benefits of those who journeyed a great length.

Both agree their peers from other parts of the continent experience the culture shock of transitioning to rural Iowa, but have becoming increasingly aware of all the different backgrounds.

“Being in all these different areas, seeing how fun and out there all (the students) could be, its one of the coolest things in the world, and it really helped me learn how to adapt to certain situations,” reveled McCutchan.

Another allure of the program is its willingness to accept any kind of students. Placement in the school is based around an entrance music theory exam. This allows potential students to start mid-level or work from the ground up and progress based on what they learn.

McCutchan is a first-year upper freshman, the highest entry point for a new scholar.

Masters, is a second-year lower freshman and has immense appreciation for the program’s open acceptance.

“I’ve learned a lot about music, coming in not knowing anything. Now I can play piano, I can play classical piano, I can play jazz piano,” touted Masters. “I’m thankful that I have to spend a lot of time on the piano.”

The student-teacher ratio provides both instructor and apprentice an opportunity to create personal, individualized scores.

Cindy Taylor, a faculty member teaching voice and piano, fell in love with music at an early age.

Just like most of her students, Taylor prides herself on improving her craft and believes working with college students provides the ideal setting.

“Our students study music all day every day.

They take very few general education courses. It’s all music driven. As a result of that, at the end of each semester, the students are required to put on their own little personal recital,” said Taylor. “They want to hone their skills and frankly, I feel like it keeps me young.”

Those recitals took place May 11 and May 12.

Students are allowed to take full advantage of talents around them as other peers and instructors can accompany throughout. But, students are forced to be multifaceted.

“The students are required to study classical piano and classical voice so they become well-rounded musicians,” stated Taylor.

That creativity is not lost on the undergraduates of the school.

“I am actually a voice major, but that wouldn’t be apparent by my project. I’ve been thinking about switching to piano but I don’t think I will,” contemplated McCutchan. “I’m thinking about doing choral teaching when I leave.”

The recitals mark the end of the spring semester as students perform 20-30 minute sets for one final grade. That will close the curriculum until the fall, but all involved in the School for Music Vocations will continue to hone their craft in one way or another. CE

Local couple creates lawn ornamentation out of concrete.

With the temperature steadily rising, more people are out tending to their gardens and breathing in that freshly mown grass smell.

Other people still are using their time to brighten their yards with bright metal art, faceted gazing balls or locally made concrete ornamentation.

For Rodney and Linda Mahn, their lives revolve around making other people’s yards look personalized and sophisticated.

The Mahns own Red Barn Lawn Ornaments, a business located in an Amish-built barn north of Creston on 330th Street.

“I make some of our cement statues from the molds we have. Then we buy cement statues from wholesalers. Then we buy the Mexican lawn statues from another wholesaler,” Rodney said. “I do any painting on the cement statues that the customers specify.”

Rodney will also do any repairs to statues.

Red Barn Lawn Ornaments opened in 2004, but more recently moved to its current location at 2771 330th St., Creston. The building houses a cement slab and shelving lining the walls and center. A plethora of concrete statues, stepping stones, twisting metal artwork and sparkling gazing balls decorate the business.

“I liked it (lawn ornamentation) as a kid, but as a kid I had no money. And then, when I was farming, I was too busy,” Rodney said. “So, when I retired from farming, I came across a man in Indianola wanting to sell his molds. So, I bought the molds from the man in Indianola and he came over here and showed me how to pour them and get the statue out.”

The business originated in an authentic barn not half a mile from the current location. But, Linda said “the trouble with the barn was the animals would get in and poop everywhere and this is cleaner. It’s contained.” The couple’s business has been at the current location since September 2016.

“I opened it as a business and hobby,” Rodney said. “It personalizes your living space and it shows where your interests lie.”

Ornamentation Rodney said the materials used in lawn ornamentation need to be sturdy, durable and maintenance free if to be kept outside.

“With the weather we have, you can’t have something that’s going to be damaged by the weather because if that’s the case, you’re always going to be repairing them,” Rodney said.

Paint-free concrete, Rodney and Linda said, is the material requiring the least amount of maintenance. When it comes to adding paint to the various angel, lady and animal statues Rodney makes, the colors can be custom but will need to be maintained occasionally.

“Painting always makes them look more unique than ever,” Rodney said.

“Some people like the religious statues. It all depends on what they want,” Linda said, building on the various popular demands. “People like unique bird baths and people like French lady statues.”

“Like a railroader, he might want a stepping stone with a steam engine pulling into the depot. We have covered bridge stepping stones that people over around Winterset might like,” Rodney added. “And, just stepping stones that say, ‘Welcome,’ give the atmosphere that they’re glad they came to visit.”

Other trends that have appeared include garden gnomes of various materials like ceramic and stone, pink flamingos, fake stones and stone mushrooms and fairy garden decorations.

There are also various stores and websites that offer fun and off-the-wall decorations like zombie garden gnomes, ceramic Buddha heads, gnomes wearing Star Trek outfits and a falling Star Wars AT-AT. BP

For those of you who know my family and me, you are well aware of the fact that our summers are jam packed with going to livestock shows and county fairs across the Midwest. We also enjoy having many visitors from across the country visit our farm to view our cattle for sale and one of the comments we often hear is how much people enjoy visiting the rolling hills of southwest Iowa. Sometimes those of us that live here forget how lucky we are to call southwest Iowa “Home”.

We have again enjoyed putting this issue of Creston Living together and thank the many advertisers, readers and story contacts for making this issue possible. I always enjoy hearing the very positive comments about the magazine and how much you enjoy reading it.
