[YOUR VEINS. YOUR STORY.] “What happened to you?” Darla Parker’s niece asked as they got ready to swim. Her niece pointed to the varicose veins on her legs. Darla was embarrassed. It was a light bulb moment.

She knew it was time to do something.

When Dr. Heather Osterbrink began working at Greater Regional Medical Center in August 2014, Darla knew she was a good fit. Darla also works in the Surgical Specialist clinic scheduling and registering patients.

outpatient surgery becomes the best option. “It was important to me that I had options,” Darla explained.

Once Dr. Osterbrink and Darla agreed surgery was the best choice, Darla prepared for the procedure.

On the day of surgery, Darla was scheduled to return to work several hours later the same afternoon. She made it to work on time and felt great!

She observed Dr. Osterbrink working with patients and received testimonials about Dr. Osterbrink’s care and skill.

When asked to describe her experience of the procedure, she said she arrived in the morning and was immediately prepared.

The procedure included injections of lidocaine into areas near the veins to be worked on.

Sealing the vein was the next part of the experience. She described it as a slightly uncomfortable pressure on her legs. “If I can handle it, most people can handle it.”

Surgery ended at 12:30 PM and by 2:30 PM Darla had returned to work. She needed to wear ace wrap bandages on her legs and she needed to move her legs every ten minutes, but she found this doable.

“Three days after surgery it hit me like a brick wall when it dawned on me that my legs did not feel heavy anymore.”

Darla said. In the following weeks, she noticed her legs feeling lighter and lighter.

Darla is now excited for summer and the fun ahead with her children.

Groumoutis pizza recipe blends history, heritage Tony Groumoutis may not have grown up eating pizza, but today it’s one of his claims to local fame.

Living in Greece as a child, the closest thing to it he ever tasted was the occasional pita bread with tomato sauce or the skillet-cooked dough treat his grandmother would make on baking days.

“Sometimes we put sugar on it, if we had any, to make it sweet,” he said. “Other times it would be olive oil or tomato paste, something to put some flavor to it.”

For the past 42 years, however, Groumoutis has been making up for his lack of pizza as a child. As co-owners of A&G Pizza, Steak House and Lounge, he and his son Dino churn out hundreds of Greek-inspired pies each week — some of the only non-chain pizzas in the Creston area.

How did an effervescent Greek become known for an Italian dish in America? Oddly enough, it started in Canada.

diverse. Some were even strange — like shrimp pizza, which didn’t last long due to lack of interest.

“You have to sell enough,” Tony said. “You can’t keep the shrimp frozen.”

Shrimp pizza may be off the menu now, but new topping combinations have abounded since then, such as the Sicilian, the Bavarian, the fettuccine alfredo and the cheeseburger.

Tony moved from Greece to Toronto in the late 1960s, where he first encountered the popularity of pizza. He then moved to Iowa in 1970 and joined his brother, George, as co-owner of a pizza and steak restaurant in Centerville. It was here that they took the pizza recipe from the previous owners — also Greeks — and modified it to their liking.

Three years later, the brothers decided to move to Creston and bought the building at 211 W. Adams St. They named the business A&G after their first names, Anthony and George.

Along with its other menu items, A&G first offered pizzas with basic toppings: pepperoni, sausage, beef, ham, Canadian bacon, green peppers and onions.

While the pizzas started simple, it didn’t take them long to get more

The bestseller, however, is an old standby: the supreme-style House pizza.

Some customers have even developed underground recipes, like the “Mostek Special,” a pie Bryan Mostek, co-owner of Farm & Home, helped perfect. It includes all the meats, fresh garlic, mushrooms, black olives and feta cheese. While it’s not on the official menu, over the years it’s developed a small following.

“It’s a great pizza,” Mostek said. “If you order it, you have to be hungry.”

Over the years, Tony and George have opened a handful of other restaurants in the Midwest. George now owns an A&G in Maryville, Mo. Tony has also passed down the A&G pizza recipe to Dino. It’s a formula he said isn’t written down anywhere.

Dino said what makes the Groumoutis’ pizza so special is a combination of the crust, sauce and cooking style. A&G uses a brick oven that has been around since the restaurant opened, which cooks pizzas differently than the conveyor ovens most restaurant chains use.

“That has a lot to do with the way our pizza tastes and the way our dough cooks,” Dino said. “You couldn’t take Casey’s dough and put it in our oven — it’d burn.”

So, some may wonder, is there a secret ingredient? If you ask Tony, it’s hard to be sure.

“I don’t have it and don’t tell you otherwise,” he laughed.

Although the Groumoutis family may not be divulging all the secrets, A&G has always been a family business. Opened by Tony and George Groumoutis in one thing is definite: Whatever goes into their pizza, it’s definitely a 1973, it is now co-owned by Tony, pictured middle, and his son, Dino, pictured right.

When the dust settles, you can see Dusti Carlisle climbing from her race car to prepare for the moment she goes back out on the track.

Carlisle, 20, is in her fourth season of racing her B-modified car at Adams County Speedway in Corning.

“I enjoyed watching it growing up, and I never thought I’d actually enjoy getting into it,” Carlisle said. “Now, I just really love the adrenaline rush it gives me.”

When she turned 16, Carlisle, daughter of Dave Carlisle and Lori Fletcher and sister of Dillon Carlisle, said her father asked if she wanted to drive a race car.

“I told him (her father) multiple times after I got out of the car, ‘I’m done. I don’t want to race. I hate this,’” Carlisle said. “And now, I’ve fallen in love with it, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”

Then, on July 12, 2014, Carlisle won her first feature.

“I did not think I was going to win,” Carlisle said. “I started pole (first position) because I won my heat race that night. …I was just waiting because Jon Plowman and Jerod Weston are, like, the two people you have to watch out for.”

During the race, Carlisle focused on driving the car around the worn dirt track, but still expected to see Plowman and Weston come up from behind. Eventually, the white flag dropped, signaling the final lap, and Carlisle was still in the lead.

“He finally kept asking if I wanted to, and I said, ‘I don’t think so.

I don’t think this is for me,’” Carlisle said. “It kept progressing every year.”

Eventually Carlisle agreed. Her father showed her the ropes of racing, and now, aside from any engine issues, Carlisle works on her own race car. Currently, she has a “Frozen”-themed wrap plastered to her race car, designed by Podium Ink of Mount Ayr. On April 23, 2011, Carlisle sat behind the wheel for her very first race at Adams County Speedway. The scheduled practice run was canceled because of rain, so her first time driving on the track was the night of the race.

“It was awful,” Carlisle said. “I did not like it at all because I didn’t know what I was supposed to do.”

For the first half of her first season, Carlisle, the only female driver then and now, disliked racing. She said she threw her helmet more than once after races, but her father pushed her to keep going. And, eventually, her

“I started to panic and freak out. I was, like, ‘Where is everybody at?’”

Carlisle said. “I was waiting on Plowman and Weston the whole entire time. Like, surely they would have come and passed me by now. Then, when the checkered flag dropped, I was screaming in my car.”

After winning, Carlisle could barely escape her car, so many people had crowded around it to congratulate her.

“It was a good feeling,” Carlisle said. “When I finally got out of the car, the whole crowd was standing up and cheering. It was a memory that I’ll never forget because I couldn’t believe that I actually did it.”

Carlisle has also driven her car at speedways in Greenwood, Neb., Harlan, Boone and Winston, Mo. Carlisle is going into her senior year at Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Mo., majoring in public accounting and private accounting. During the 2014-15 racing season at the speedway and while college classes were still in session, Carlisle drove to Creston on Fridays and raced on Saturdays before driving back to Missouri.

“I love being able to have that racing family time,” Carlisle said. “It’s what I look forward to every Friday and Saturday night, coming back home and working on the race cars and seeing everybody.” BP

what’s cookin’ in kyp’s kitchen It’s May, which means it’s time to celebrate National Burger Month!

Actually it doesn’t matter what month it is...it is always a good time to grill burgers.

A simple twist of the American burger transforms these burgers into an Italian classic!

Pair these hearty burgers with an Italian-style pasta salad. Smakelijk eten!

CHICKEN PARMESAN BURGERS 1 lb. ground chicken 2 cloves garlic, finely minced 2 Tbsp. chopped fresh oregano 2 Tbsp. chopped fresh basil 1/2 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. coarse ground black pepper 1/2 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes, I used 1/4 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes 1 1/2 cups Italian seasoned bread crumbs 2 Tbsp. olive oil, more as needed 2 cups good quality marinara sauce, more for dipping 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese 1 ripe tomato, thinly sliced 4 soft buns In a large bowl combine the chicken, garlic, oregano, basil, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes. Don’t overwork it; just mix until combined. Shape into 4 equal patties.

Pour the breadcrumbs into a shallow dish. One at a time,

coat all sides of each patty with the bread crumbs.

Preheat the oven to 400° and cover a baking sheet in foil.

Heat the oil over medium high heat in a large skillet. Add the patties and cook for about 4 minutes on the first side, checking to make sure they aren’t getting too dark. Turn the burgers and cook for another 4 minutes on the second side. Make a small cut in one burger to check for doneness.

Working on your prepared baking sheet, assemble all but the top bun of your burgers.

On the bottom bun add a slice of tomato and top it with a chicken patty. Spoon marinara over the chicken and cover it with mozzarella cheese. Repeat with the other 3 burgers.

Place the top buns cut-side down on the baking sheet and put all of it in the oven for 2-4 minutes, just until the cheese melts.

Add the top bun to the burgers and serve with extra marinara for dipping.

The original recipe calls for cooking burgers in a skillet with oil but I chose to grill them. Grill prepared patties over medium heat for 8-12 minutes until medium done. (It will depend on your grill as to how long they will cook). During the last couple of minutes of grilling spoon marinara over the burgers and cover them with mozzarella cheese. Place soft buns (buttered with garlic butter) soft side down on grill to brown them lightly. Assemble in this order - bottom bun, slice of tomato, chicken patty with topping and finish with top bun. Serve with extra marinara for dipping.

1 egg 1/4 cup meatless spaghetti sauce 1/3 cup fine dry bread crumbs 1/3 cup chopped onion 3 Tbsp. fresh basil or oregano or 1 tsp. dried basil or oregano 2 cloves garlic, minced or 1/4 tsp. garlic powder 1 lb. lean ground beef 1 lb. bulk Italian sausage 2 medium green, yellow, and/or red sweet peppers, cut into rings and halved 1 Tbsp. olive oil or cooking oil 1-6oz. package sliced Mozzarella cheese, halved crosswise 1 cup meatless spaghetti sauce 8 kaiser rolls, split and toasted (or buns) In a large mixing bowl combine egg and the 1/4 cup spaghetti sauce. Stir in bread crumbs, onion, basil or oregano, and garlic. Add beef and sausage.

Mix well. Shape meat mixture into eight 1/2 inch thick patties.

Place sweet pepper slices on a piece of foil and drizzle with oil. Bring up long sides of foil and leaving space for steam, seal tightly with a double fold. Fold short ends to seal and from a foil packet. Grill burgers and foil packet on an uncovered grill directly over medium coals for 10 to 12 minutes or till burgers are no longer pink and peppers are tender, turning burgers and foil packet once halfway through grill time.

Top burgers with pepper strips and a half slice of cheese; cover and grill about 15 seconds more until cheese is melted. Meanwhile, heat remaining spaghetti sauce, on the stove, grill or microwave. To serve, place burgers in buns. Spoon spaghetti sauce on burger, cheese and peppers.

Pine Valley and Crestmoor golf courses play host to all ages and skill levels during the spring, summer and fall

There are two nine-hole golf courses in Creston and they entertain beginners all the way to the most skillful golfers in southwest Iowa.

Crestmoor Golf Club features a semi-private course on West Townline Street in Creston. The club boasts 32 senior (55 and older) male players that represent the club each Monday traveling around southwest Iowa to play 18 holes against players from other clubs. Some of the cities they visit include Atlantic, Shenandoah, Red Oak, Greenfield and Corning.

Their year culminates in August with a Ryder Cup in Atlantic that hosts more than 100 players from across southwest Iowa. Crestmoor has fared pretty well at the Cup the past decade.

“We have darn good golfers out here. A Crestmoor team has won (the Cup) five out of the past six years,” said Keith Moore, longtime member at Crestmoor.

Pine Valley is also one of the hosts for the Creston Chamber of Commerce golf tournament slated July 10. The biggest tournament at the course each year, though, is the Coors Light Tournament the last Saturday in July.

“We normally have 32 to 36 two-player teams for that one,” Redding said.

Other than league nights and weekend tournaments, Redding said the course is pretty much open to the public from sunrise to dusk during the season.

Jack Willets of Creston has been playing at Pine Valley for more than 20 years. His favorite holes on the course are No. 4 and No. 6 (pictured below), which both require players to hit the ball over the course’s pond.

“It’s a nice view,” Willets said. “I bring my camera out from time to time and have some good photos of those holes. And, each fall the balloons always manage to go over Pine Valley. You will also see the crop dusters (airplanes) going in and out of the airport when you’re on the course.”

J.R. Lett agrees that hole No. 4 is one of the favorites on the course because of the challenge it presents.

“The green is right along the water,” Lett said, “and you are in trouble if you hit it short or long. I’ve lost a few balls in that pond.”

Lett said he spends a lot of time on the course with his 4-year-old son Bradie.

“The Reddings treat us like family,” Lett said. “They treat everyone like family and players there are accepting of all levels of play.”

Let’s get crafty.

Kretz said she wanted people to know even the beginners among us can be crafty and have fun.

“The main thing is, you don’t have to be crafty. You get crafty when you come and enjoy yourself and relax,” Kretz said. “Anyone can do the projects we do, and we try to keep adding different things to it.”

Kretz hosts parties for those wanting to paint craft items, like letter door hangers, wooden family blocks, birthday wall hangers and photo blocks.

“I added this last September because I felt During the summer, people can be found doing many activities, there was a need and one of those activities is painting. for this kind of Painting parties are becoming more and more popular for kids and activity in Creston,” Kretz said. “It’s fun, it’s not that expensive, so it’s a adults. There are also other painting parties available for adults, such as the queen of arts parties. Party-goers can bring wine or other drinks, as well as snacks if they wish.

“They bring their alcohol in. I provide snacks, but they can bring their own snacks, too,” Kretz said. “They bring in their coolers, but they’re very responsible.”

While Kretz focuses on craft items, Bailey Fry-Schnormeier spends her time teaching canvas painting and other outlets for the Social Arts Studio through Creston: Arts. “We have people come for date night, or a group of girls. We have painters who come alone and have a wonderful time,� Fry-Schnormeier said. “The night classes are 21 and over, and they can bring their own beverages and snacks. I think I advertised the first time as it gives them a little liquid courage. A lot of our artists have never painted before.�

The classes at Adams Street Espresso, 213 W. Adams Street, were originally scheduled twice a month, usually at 7 p.m. Once school was in session, however, the class number dropped to once a month.

The most common media used in the classes is paint, though silk screens were incorporated in the April class. “I’ve heard about them (painting parties) in other cities, and it sounds like it’s really popular and it’s going over really well,� FrySchnormeier said. “I just wanted to help bring the arts to everybody in Creston.�

Twelve Mile Lake’s electrofishing indicated largemouth bass continue to excel with most fish between 14 and 16-inches. Good bluegill angling is expected, with fish up to 10-inches available for anglers to catch.

“We did a renovation here in 2005 and the lake has come around quite well,” Jansen said. “We were able to improve the water quality, which allowed for more water vegetation. That gave bass a better habitat to hide in and anglers a target spot to fish.”

Wolf said the renovations at Green Valley Lake and Twelve Mile have made a significantly positive impact on the overall fishing experience. said. “Some people don’t realize the spots they can access from shore are some of the best fishing spots in the lake.”

The newest addition for local players is at Cedar Park. Located approximately four miles southeast of Creston, Cedar Park is a 12-acre park. The one-acre pond was recently renovated by Union County Conservation through a grant to improve fish habitation.

“We are starting to build a little disc golf haven here,” said Jim Street, who helps organize the disc golf league.

The nine-hole disc golf course highlights the recent renovations. Austin Smith and Joey Hoepker approached Union County Conservation Park Ranger at Cedar Park Mike Hilger about adding a course to the park in February 2014.

“It gives people an alternative way to see the natural beauty of the whole park,” Smith said.
