We have about 20,000 RAGBRAI visitors stopping by overnight on July 25 to visit our wonderful city. The town is getting ready for the event and will look at doing a great job of hosting all our friends from around the nation.

Are you slowly dying from lack of sleep?

Obstructive sleep apnea is a common disorder affecting more than 18 million people in the United States. In spite of this disease being so prevalent, it continues to be under recognized. “We have seen people come to the ER looking sick, who have died within hours from right heart failure- related originally to sleep apnea,” Dr. Matthew Epp, MD an Emergency Internal Medicine Physician at Greater Regional commented. Unfortunately, by the time Dr. Epp comes in contact with some of these patients in the emergency room, they may be in a terminal phase of their illness. Sleep apnea by itself is not terminal. When properly diagnosed it can be managed and controlled.

Greater Regional Medical Center has offered highly specialized sleep lab services since 2001. The Sleep Center team is specially trained in the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders. Dr. Annie Nawab is the medical director of the Sleep Medicine Center and Pulmonology department. Dr. Nawab is board certified in Sleep medicine, Pulmonology, Critical care and Internal medicine.

Sleep apnea symptoms include day time sleepiness, loud snoring, morning headaches, and waking with a dry mouth or throat. In younger patients, there usually is a drop in school performance and an inability to focus. In older patients, typical symptoms include frequent bathroom breaks, memory may not be quite as sharp, and sleeping in public places. “A huge misconception older people have is, they think they need more sleep because they are getting older. In fact, the need for sleep does not increase. If you snore loudly, awaken from sleep gasping for air, and experience excessive daytime sleepiness, you most likely have sleep apnea and I strongly urge you to talk to your primary care physician,” commented Dr Nawab.

Genetics and lifestyle play a role in the development of sleep apnea. If a parent has sleep apnea, it is more likely the children will have a higher risk of sleep apnea as well, because a child’s lifestyle and routine often mimics parent’s environments.

Other traits likely to increase the risk of sleep apnea include obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes and smoking. Men are generally more likely to have sleep apnea than women, as well as African-Americans and Hispanics compared to other ethnicities.

Dr. Epp explained, “Sleep apnea is like any other chronic diseaseit is manageable once diagnosed.” Once a patient is diagnosed, treatments can be started to avoid the development of chronic health issues.

There are many conditions affected by sleep apnea, but cardiovascular disease is by far the most prevalent. Dr Nawab explained, “Sleep apnea patients have a 30% higher risk of heart attacks and premature death. Untreated obstructive sleep apnea patients are 4 times more likely to develop atrial fibrillations and they are at 57% higher risk for recurrence of atrial fibrillation after undergoing ablation. Men with moderate to severe sleep apnea are 3 times more likely to have a stroke”.

Dr. David Lemon is a cardiologist who consults on patients at Greater Regional. He sees firsthand the effects sleep apnea has on cardiac patients. Dr. Lemon stated “Failure to respond to usual therapy, these patients can’t control their chronic illnesses. The percentage of people I see on a daily basis with sleep apnea would be about 25%,” commented Dr. Lemon. Since sleep apnea has many of the same symptoms as heart disease it is encouraged to first consult with your primary physician.

As chronic disease continues to play an increasingly common role in premature death and illness, the role of the Greater Regional Sleep Center has grown.

That’s one way Roger Lanning describes geocaching. But there’s more The weekend kicks off with the IGO hosting its board meeting on Friday, to it than just that.

Sept. 23. The geocaching event runs Saturday, Sept. 24, and more than 200 new caches will be released that day.

Geocaching is a game in which users create a username in an online database that gives users coordinates to caches.

Cachers then use Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites to find caches before logging those caches on the online database.

The major website is www.geocaching.com.

“You record that on the internet on the geocaching website to log that you found it (the cache) or if you didn’t find it, you log that so other users know it’s difficult to find or maybe that it’s gone missing over time,” Lanning said. “When you log it on the internet, that also keeps track of how many you’ve found as a user. It keeps track of a lot of different statistics for you, too.”

Lanning started geocaching in January 2010. At the time, there were only about half a dozen caches in the Creston area.

But that number has grown in recent years thanks to Lanning and other avid geocachers, like Dave Abildtrup, who have placed various caches in the area.

“I think there’s probably 20 in town,” Abildtrup said. “For a 10-mile radius around Creston, which includes rural area, there’s 43. They’re placed where they should be placed. There are always some unique ones out there — the way they place them and what they are when they place them.”

Creston will host a Hike-n-Seek event Sept. 23-25, which is put on by the Iowa Geocachers Organization (IGO).

The IGO selected Creston to host its 2016 Hike-n-Seek event. This year, the event will be held the weekend following Balloon Days.

Organizers are also working on a poker event, where poker cards are placed at caches and geocachers will try to build the best poker hand during the course of the day.

Headquarters for the event will be at the congregate mealsite in the restored Depot. That’s where geocachers will be able to download coordinates for all of the caches.

Sunday, Sept. 25, will include a pancake breakfast and a “cache in, trash out” event, where geocachers will go to a park and clean it up.

“It’s kind of a way for cachers to get together and meet each other,” Lanning said about the Hike-n-Seek event. “You see these (user)names on the website and don’t know who they are.”

For the first time, Kelly Franklin and the Southwestern Community College (SWCC) drama club will bring Shakespeare to the McKinley Park bandshell this summer.

“When I moved here, I thought, ‘Why don’t they do Shakespeare in the Park? They have the best location for it.’ And, I finally decided I was going to do Shakespeare in the Park,” said Franklin, SWCC English instructor and drama club director. “I want the community to be able to have something like this.”

“’Macbeth’ is a classic,” said Joseph Larson, SWCC music student and drama club member. “Plus, we’re going to do it in the shell outside – that’s super awesome – and involve the community.”Under Franklin’s direction, this presentation of “Macbeth” will be post-apocalyptic fiction. However, the Shakespearan language will stay the same.

Each is easy to prepare and makes a great tasting main course. Serve with your favorite side dish - grilled potato wedges, chips and salsa, or mashed potatoes and fresh green beans. Smakelijk teen!

BEER-MARINATED occasionally. Drain steaks, discarding marinade. Sprinkle both sides of steaks with the cracked black pepper. Grill steaks for 8-12 for rare and 12-15 for medium turning steaks halfway PEPPERED STEAK through grilling.

Worcestershire sauce 2 tsp. brown sugar 1/2 tsp. paprika 1/2 tsp. ground black pepper 3 beef T-bone or 6 top loin steaks, cut 1 inch thick 1 to 1 1/2 tsp. cracked black pepper

1 lb. ground beef 1 can refried beans 1 pkg. taco seasoning 3/4 cup water 10 8 inch torillas 1 cup taco sauce 1 8 oz. pkg. shredded cheddar cheese

For marinade, combine onion, beer, chili sauce, parsley, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, paprika, and the ground black pepper. Trim fat from steaks. Place steaks in a plastic bag set in a shallow dish. Pour marinade over steaks; seal bag.

Marinate in the refrigerator for at least 4 to 24 hours turning bag

Brown ground beef and drain. Add: refried beans, taco seasoning and water. Let simmer for 8-10 minutes. Lay out tortillas and fill evenly with meat mixture. Roll tightly (don’t roll ends) and place in 9x13 pan. Pour taco sauce over filled tortillas (mild or hot sauce). Sprinkle with shredded cheddar cheese. Bake at 350° for 10 minutes or until cheese is melted. Serve with chopped lettuce, diced tomatoes, sour cream and sliced black olives.

Fold a 30 inch long piece of foil in half lengthwise. Place in bottom of slow cooker with both ends hanging over the sides of cooker. Spray with vegetable oil. Combine beef, bread crumbs, 1/2 cup spaghetti sauce, egg, onion, and seasonings. Shape into loaf. Place on top of foil in slow cooker. Spread 2 Tbsp. spaghetti sauce over top or more if you like. Cover and cook on High for 2 1/2-3 hours or on Low for 5-6 hours. Lift cooked loaf out by foil and serve!

The new paved hiking and biking trail at Green Valley Lake is a great way to explore the natural beauty of a beloved local landmark.

Spring has sprung and the long, sunny days of summer are closing in on us.

For those who have been patiently waiting to soak up the scenery of local natural beauty, Green Valley State Park’s newly added walking trail and beautifully renovated campground may just set the perfect stage.

The trail, which stretches along 3.5 miles of Green Valley Lake’s shoreline, offers joggers, hikers and bikers pristine views of the lake and its surrounding landscape.

“The grade is very good as far as being easy to use,” said Park Ranger Alan Carr. “There aren’t a lot of hills on it once you get into the park. It’s an easy walk and an easy bike ride. It makes it available to more people. When everything greens up and the plants start growing again and the trees start popping up, it’ll just get better.”

The trail also enhances access to fishermen seeking to cast lines from shore, giving them access to areas that were limited by weather conditions before it was paved.

“We wanted everybody to have as much opportunity as they can,” Carr added.

The park campground has also seen major improvements in recent years and can be accessed directly by means of the new trail. The campground offers accomodations that include 100 campsites, 83 of which are electric, three rustic camper cabins, a children’s playground, numerous boat ramps and a newly constructed all-concrete shower building. The single-room cabins each have bunk beds equipped to sleep five people, heating and air conditioning, a small refrigerator and microwave, table and chairs for four, a deck and private boat dock.

Reservations for campsites and cabins can be made by calling 877-427-2757 or by visiting www.iowastateparks.reserveamerica.com and are secured with a credit card. Campers can reserve sites within the campground three months in advance and cabins a year in advance. Those wishing to make reservations may want to utilize this full timeframe as ranger Carr says, “Since the renovation and improvements that we’ve made, it’s pretty typical for our electric site, at least, to be almost all full about every weekend.”

VETERAN RIDERS

During RAGBRAI cyclists’ stop in Creston July 25,

military veterans who are cyclists or help with RAGBRAI will be honored.

The stop in Creston for the 44th Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI) on July 25 will mean about 15,000 cyclists flooding the town, live music, food and drinks.

But, it will also be a time to honor veterans.

“Some of the days of RAGBRAI, we try to single out a different group or a special occasion, so this year, we’re going to do something special,” said T.J. Juskiewicz, RAGBRAI executive director. “We have a lot of veterans who ride RAGBRAI and a lot of veterans who work with RAGBRAI – on our staff or as volunteers in town.”

So, the RAGBRAI staff has decided to honor veterans during the Creston stop.

“One of the things we’ve come up with is we’re going to give them a token of our appreciation in downtown Creston,” Juskiewicz said. “We’re going to have a special ball cap that’s a RAGBRAI veteran’s hat and give them out free to all the riding veterans.”

It’s been 19 years since Creston has hosted RAGBRAI. Creston was an overnight town in 1984 and 1997.

“We haven’t been to some of these towns in quite a while,” Juskiewicz said. “We’re looking forward to going back. And, it’s a nice, fun and challenging route.”

This year, RAGBRAI organizers say the route is the third-shortest course, 24th flattest and 15th easiest. Overnight stops are Glenwood, Shenandoah, Creston, Leon, Centerville, Ottumwa, Washington and Muscatine.

In Creston, Southwestern Community College will be the main campground for RAGBRAI cyclists. The other two campgrounds will be McKinley Park and Creston high school and middle school. In all, these three locations have more than 80 acres of camping space.

For entertainment, the main stage will be in uptown Creston and located in the city parking lot just west of the restored Depot. There will be three bands performing: local bands Oreo Meatwagon and Templeton Fade, along with Double Vision, which is a Foreigner tribute band from Kansas City, Missouri.

There will also be music at the bandshell in McKinley Park during the afternoon.

For veteran appreciation, Juskiewicz said there will also be a program on the main stage to thank veterans for their service.

“There are literally people who are serving overseas the week before. They come over and do RAGBRAI and then go back to places like Afghanistan or other places overseas,” Juskiewicz said. “We’re able to do events like RAGBRAI because of these brave men and women that have protected us ... so we just want to say thanks and have a special day in their honor.”

Creston Mayor Gary Lybarger has been attending Creston RAGBRAI meetings and will attend RAGBRAI July 25, though he will not be riding.

As a Vietnam veteran and member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) honor guard, Lybarger said he looks forward to seeing veterans honored for their service during the stop in Creston.

“There are lots of veterans out there that never got a real thanks for what they did, and I think they deserve it,” Lybarger said. “If it wasn’t for the veterans and people currently in the military, we may not be living in the freedom we live with right now.” KH

Quilts and Other Notions will participate in the Row by Row Experience, an international quilting extravaganza.

Brightly colored bolts of fabric line the shelves at Quilts and Other Notions in Creston. The colors are endless: there are various blues, purples and yellows, and different geometrical patterns or playful designs.

This is one of the many shops involved in the Row by Row Experience, an annual quilting event all over the North American continent.

“It’s a nationwide event, including Canada,” said Sarah Brown, owner of Quilts and Other Notions. “It’s to help promote local quilt shops, so quilt shops across the nation take part and people like quilters will plan road trips around it. It’s a summer-long event.”

EXPERIENCE

The Row by Row Experience will start its fifth-annual event in June, which is the second year Iowa shops have participated. To participate, quilters travel to local shops and get a free pattern for a 9-and-a-half-inch by 36-inch row. When quilters get about eight rows, they sew the patterns together, then the rows and turn the completed quilt in to a local shop that quilter has a row from. The first person to arrive with a finished product at each shop gets a prize.

“I went one day and picked up all the patterns. Then, I spent the next three days, day and night, putting them together just because I wanted to win,” Henry said. “It was exciting.

I’ve never really won anything before. It was fun.”

Henry also visited fabric shops in Adel, Ames, Ankeny and Des Moines. This year, however, Henry plans to have more fun with the project instead of rushing her sewing skills.

“I’ll not do it again,” Henry said of her three-day work vacation turned sewing adventure. “That was a little much.”

The 2016 theme for the Row by Row Experience is “Home Sweet Home,” with Quilts and Other Notions’ individual theme as “Up, Up and Away.” Brown hopes to use hot air balloons and the rolling country hills surrounding Creston in the shop’s row pattern.

“Last year, they came from everywhere. It was like every state (and) Canada. There were 2,800 shops involved,” said Joyce Franklin, former owner of Quilts and Other Notions.

Franklin said there were more than 1,000 visitors to the shop in summer 2015 for the event, and Brown is expecting about the same for 2016. The interesting thing about this event, Brown said, is that all the patterns and limited edition items cannot be purchased online; the quilters have to be physically at the store to purchase them.

Nationally recognized artist Jordan Weber of Des Moines will paint a mural in Creston in partnership with Creston: Arts and Creston High School students.

The artist whose piece inspired by protests in Ferguson, Missouri, was picked up by media outlets throughout the nation will come to Creston in July to paint a mural in partnership with Creston: Arts and Creston High School students.

The mural will be on the east wall of the building that formerly housed Huff Bakery, located at the intersection of West Adams and North Division streets. Additionally, CHS students will have their own art panels displayed in the windows on the west side of the building.

The student art is already up, and artist Jordan Weber of Des Moines will paint the mural in early July. All of this will be complete by the time RAGBRAI cyclists come through Creston July 25.

“The reason we decided on Jordan Weber is (we were) really impressed with the scale and quality of his work and how youthful it was,” said Blake Fry-Schnormeier with Creston: Arts. “For the mural, he’s going to be incorporating elements of the students’ (panels) plus elements of ideas they have. They’re going to collaboratively come up with the mural design.”

Weber uses imagery from popular culture to create works meant to shock viewers from their daily routine and increase their compassion toward the world around them. His works are often constructed from repurposed materials and spray paint.

Weber has received an artist fellowship from the Iowa Arts Council, and his art is included in collections across the globe. In Iowa, his work is frequently on display at the Moberg Gallery in Des Moines.

“What makes this project all the more special is we have an artist that is being recognized statewide and outside the state. He was just part of shows in New York and LA,” Blake said. “The work he did for the Iowa Arts Council in 2014 really propelled his career and gave him national recognition.”

“We want the mural to be youthful, contain a lot of movement, be very colorful and contain modern elements of graffiti and pop art,” Blake said. “It may be a focal point or it may not, but since RAGBRAI is coming through, we wanted something that’s going to appeal to the cyclists, so we are going to be incorporating a bicycle or parts of a bicycle.”

Weber hopes to complete the mural within five days.

Student art As of now, there will be 16 student-designed panels on display. Some were created with solely paint on plywood. Other panels contain digital prints that are collaged within their paintings to create mixed-media pieces.

“I started with my painting class introducing street art in general and public art and the impact it can have on communities,” Bailey said. “The students started researching street artists they were drawn to, and we were trying to come up with some sort of theme so (the panels) were somehow connected. We ended up going with the invisible red thread ... so, each of the students will have a piece of that red thread connecting their piece.”

“The kids are really excited about this project and very enthusiastic,” Blake said. “They have been working on their panels outside class time.” KH

With a gentle wind blowing, the only sounds to be heard, besides the rushing vehicles across the dam, are the whiz of a fishing reel and the plop as a jig falls into the sparkling water of Summit Lake. For local fishermen, this lake can be the summit of relaxation throughout the warmer months.

Mike Burton of Creston and his sons, Trey, 5, and Brady, 10, cast their lines into the lake, reel them in and try again.

“I like Summit because it’s close, quiet, not crowded and there’s good-sized bass in there,” Mike said.

Trey chooses to fish off the floating dock, but eventually gives up when he realizes the fish aren’t biting. Brady floats from the rocky jetty to a curved, green piece of land just north, where he crouches in the grass and lets the fishing line and jig work their magic.

“I’ve been fishing here six years, since Brady was 4 and I got him hooked on bass fishing,” Mike said. “It’s good bonding time, and I think it can teach them patience and understanding of nature. You see lots of different things while fishing.”

Mike, who has been fishing for 17 years, tries to fish at least once a week with his sons in spring, summer and autumn. They fish Green Valley and Summit lakes in Creston, Twelve Mile and Three Mile lakes in Afton, Lake Icaria in Corning and farm ponds across the area.

“I just like to spend time with my dad,” Brady said. “It’s just about the adventure.”

Summit Lake is located on the west edge of Creston and has a fishing jetty, boat access and hardsurface boat ramp. There are a variety of fish available there, as well, such as bluegill, channel catfish, large-mouth bass, walleye and white crappie. Hunting is also allowed on part of the property.

“The lake was restored in 2013,” said Chad Paup, wildlife biologist with Iowa Department of Natural Resources. “It took a couple years for that dam to get rebuilt, and when we did that, we restarted the fishery.”

The dam was restored alongside other cosmetic work starting in March 2011. According to Paup, the fishery was restarted alongside the dam restoration because common carp had taken over and lowered the water quality.

“We didn’t used to see hardly any water fowl show up on that thing, but now, ... boy the water fowl have really taken to it and enjoyed the cleaner water,” Paup said. “The muskrats have returned, and while that might not be a positive for homeowners right next to it (the lake), it shows a benefit of the water quality.”

While Three Mile Lake is to be restored in the near future, it’s been several years for Summit, and that time has created a prime fishing spot for locals and those from out of town. The boat ramp on the lake allows craft of any size to go out on the water.

“Anytime you have a restoration, two, three or four years after that, the fish really grow well because the vegetation in the lake when it was dry is starting to decompose,” Paup said. “It’s just a bonanza of feeding for those fish, and the panfish fishing is just going to be spectacular anytime now.” BP

I think this is a great motto to have in mind everyday when someone visits our community. Creston has many things to offer in terms of entertainment, special events and local businesses.
