Fall is always a busy time of year with school starting back up and lots of activities leading up to Christmas. The last half of the year always goes fast. You have Halloween in October, Thanksgiving in November and Christmas in December. So you always have something to look forward to each month.

Our Holiday to Holiday show is on Monday, November 7, out at the SWCC gym. If you would like to see many of the area merchants and get a bunch of new ideas for the fall season, come on out!

Hopefully most of the fall harvest will be in by the time of the Holiday to Holiday show.

It should be a big year for corn producers with the crop coming in as one of the biggest in history. All the rains this summer have the crop straining the capacity of all the local storage.

Could a Simple Test Change Your Life?

Nearly 60 million people in the United States suffer from allergies, and the numbers are rising.

Allergies are reactions of the immune system to substances that, in most people, cause no symptoms.

Allergies occur due to an immune response that reacts toward natural substances in the environment the same way it would react to something harmful. The reason the immune system reacts to a harmless substance is unknown.

Vicki Hartman suffered from constant nasal drip. She had previously consulted her doctor to help with relief. Vicki was prescribed a nasal spray, but as time progressed her nasal drip resurfaced.

“I heard about Dr. Matthew Bolinger. My niece had been seen by him, so I made an appointment,” said Vicki. During her appointment, Dr. Bolinger assessed her condition and prescribed a different nasal spray as a starting point to control her symptoms.

After a few weeks she had a return visit with Dr. Bolinger. “He said I could continue with the spray because it was working or I could get a full range allergy test,” commented Vicki. While she agreed the nasal spray was helping, she wondered for how long. “Once Dr. Bolinger gave me the option to get tested, I said yes.”

“When I was diagnosed with rhinitis by a previous doctor, I received an allergy test but it was not a complete one,” noted Vicki. The complete allergy testing process at Greater Regional took Vicki about an hour and a half to complete.

The skin tests are done through a prick or scratch test. In this test, a tiny drop of a possible allergen is pricked or scratched into the skin. Ten to fifty allergens can be tested. It takes 5-10 minutes for the allergens to be placed on the skin. After the allergen is placed on the skin, it then takes 15 minutes to determine if any small red bumps appear in the spot of the allergen. The raised red bumps indicate a reaction to the allergen.

“By knowing what you are specifically allergic to can open up avenues of control and avoidance without relying so heavily on medication,” says Dr. Matthew Bolinger, ENT. “I am glad I went through with it. I really had no other option for relief,” said Vicki. After her test results were evaluated. Vicki returned to the Clinic and is now given a shot once a week to relieve her allergy symptoms. “I have been getting my allergy shots for almost 2 weeks now. It is a very convenient service because I can stay right in town.”

“When patients go through with the testing process, it allows us to discuss the use of immunotherapy treatment, which can alter the way your immune system responds to the offending allergens. It also allows us to tailor therapy to the individual,” commented Dr. Bolinger.

It may take up to 12 months to notice lasting improvement in allergy symptoms when placed on maintenance immunotherapy treatment program. Patient response to immunotherapy is regularly re-evaluated. If treatment appears successful, maintenance treatments are generally continued for three to five years.

Holiday to Holiday

Discover how to turn leftover turkey or ham from the holidays into delectable new dishes and garner tips for updating that outdated kitchen during this year’s Creston News Advertiser– sponsored Holiday to Holiday Extravaganza.

On Monday, Nov. 7, the seventh-annual event will return to Creston with new recipes, decorating tips and prizes that are all tied into the holiday season.

“It’s an extravaganza featuring Thanksgiving, Christmas and the New Year,” said Dennis Kuyper, CNA advertising assistant and head chef for the event. “And, it’s not just for women.”

The extravaganza will be held in the Southwestern Community College gymnasium. Beginning at 4:30 p.m., attendees may stop by the more than 25 booths of local vendors, businesses and artisans to try food samples, buy products and enter drawings to win prizes. Everyone who attends the event is entered to win door prizes donated by vendors, and more than 50 prizes will be available. At 7 p.m., the main activities will begin.

The evening will kick off with emcee Craig Mittag announcing the winners of the CNA’s broth or cream soup, chili or stew recipe contest.

Then, those interested in improving their culinary skills may watch demonstrations by Kuyper. He will show attendees how to turn leftover turkey or ham into new dishes, as well as offer demonstrations on holiday desserts and appetizers.

“It’s an extravaganza featuring Thanksgiving, Christmas and the New Year.”

In addition, Kuyper will hand out samples of smoothies and dessert bars throughout the event.

“Our main goal each year is to do something different, though we will also have a lot of the same hits and highlights,” said Mittag, CNA advertising director.

Also offering recipes and demonstrations will be Misha Curtis with Lenox Hardwares’ Sweet Side.

And, Pampered Chef Representative Denise Roberg will provide tips for using Pampered Chef products.

Another main event will be American Homes Design Center kitchenupdating tips presented by Ronda Katzer, Tammy Stuart and Cinda Long.

“We’re going to show how you can update your kitchen on a budget – the cabinets, the hardware, tile paint, that type of thing – without having to tear everything out and totally redo everything,” said Katzer, American Homes showroom manager. “And possibly, we’ll be talking about the differences between granite and quartz countertops and things like that.”

“We don’t want to make it just a cooking show. We want it to be everything holiday-related from cooking to decorating,” Mittag said.

Customized Bolton Box Shop products could be purchased as holiday gifts for military veterans, friends and family.

Using a laser-engraver, Gordon Bolton can etch every intricate detail of an image or photo into walnut, cherry or birch wood to create personalized, sustainable pieces of memorabilia.

“The detail is unreal. That detail in there,” he said, pointing to an intricate, engraved image of a field of flowers, “there’s no way you could carve that.”

Dozens of pieces of art – some memory boxes engraved for veterans with phrases like “proudly served Vietnam” and a U.S. Army seal, others pet urns with images of those pets etched into the wood – cover a table in Bolton’s woodshop.

A typical lid, which is usually where the image is engraved on a box, takes about 30 minutes to be cut. Then, the rest of it is made by hand in the shop and varnished.

The owner of Bolton Custom Cabinets for the past 37 years, he just two years ago started Bolton Box Shop. Under that name, he creates customized memory boxes, human and pet urns and Yeti mugs.

“I love woodworking. I’ve done it all my life,” said Bolton, 60, of rural Creston.

“I’ve always done custom kitchens, and then I started doing this smaller stuff.

People came to me that I’d done kitchens for wanting an urn, and we just kind of went from there.

And, people always want little decorative boxes.”

Using a laser-engraver worth about $18,000, Bolton can take a personal photograph, a photo off the Internet or a computerized image and perfectly replicate the image.

“You can see the finished image when it’s all done,” he said. “You can see how the laser cut it and the design that goes into it. It’s neat to see it all work.”

The boxes are made to order, but Bolton also has several already made in the shop that can be purchased.

Bolton can use most types of high-quality wood for the boxes, and he chooses a dovetail joint because it’s better quality and will hold better. Each box is also felt-lined. The boxes either have hinges or a lid, depending on the purpose of the piece and what the customer wants.

“They’re not plywood or cheap wood. It’s a quality piece,” Bolton said.

“We can do walnut, cherry, birch – any of those engraves real nice.

They can choose whatever kind of wood, whatever size. Whatever they want, I’ll do it.”

“It’s on a computer program and they’re 3-D images, and you transfer them into the machine, and it’s a laser-cutter that cuts (the image) into it,” Bolton said. “It’s a laser beam that burns. So, it can take a photo, like a wedding photo or whatever, and engrave it right into the wood.

And then, the wooden boxes are all hand-built with dovetail joints.

They’re quality boxes that will last a lifetime.”

“One of the hardest things is to figure out the computer part of it,” said Bolton’s wife, Sheryl. “He’s a natural at the wood-crafting part of it, but this has been a challenge.”

Some customers have given Bolton a photo of their dog for a dog urn; others have given him a photo of people to replicate onto a memory box.

For the boxes, Bolton said each piece takes about a day of work by the time it is engraved, varnished and put together.

The dog urns have become popular among customers, especially a hunter who loses his or her hunting dog, Bolton said.

“People have bird dogs and think the world of them. When they can’t use them anymore and they have to be put down, people get them cremated just to set them on the shelf,” Bolton said. “I know in some towns, they can’t even bury a dog; they’ve got to have them cremated. So, I can custom-design these, put the dates on it, the name of the dog, whatever they want on it and however they want it.”

He sells most of the memory boxes for anywhere from $80 to $100. The human urns may cost as much as $500. They can be made for two people or just one person – whatever the customer requests. The dog urns could be $100 or less, depending on the size of the dog, and cat urns are about $30. And, engraved Yeti mugs are about $20.

“The (cost of the) box is so much and then the engraving, how much time it takes to engrave it, is on top of that,” Bolton said.

Bolton said the memory boxes, especially, would make great holiday gifts.

“Somebody that was in the service, I can see somebody getting one for somebody else as a gift – a memory box to put all their military stuff in.

The military logos, we’ve got every armed service there is,” he said.

“There’s just nothing out there quite like that. There’s some cheap, junky stuff but nothing quality. These are quality with solid wood.”

what’s cookin’ in kyp’s kitchen ALMONDS

Historians generally agree that almonds and dates, both mentioned in the Old Testament of the Bible, were among the earliest cultivated foods. The earliest varieties of almonds were found in China carried by traders down the ancient silk road to Greece, Turkey, and the Middle East. Almonds were introduced to California in the mid 1700s. The state’s 6,000 almond growers produce 100 percent of the commercial domestic supply and 80 percent of the world’s supply. Cookies, bars and roasted almonds are included in todays recipes. DUTCH LETTER BARS 1 cup butter, softened 1 can almond paste (8 oz) 2 eggs plus 1 egg yolk (reserve the egg white) 1 1/2 cup sugar 2 cups flour 2 tsp. almond extract 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract sliced almonds coarse sugar Preheat oven to 325°. Cream butter, almond paste, sugar and eggs until blended. Add almond and vanilla extracts, blend. Add flour and mix.

Spread in 9 x 13 inch pan. Brush with beaten egg white. Sprinkle with sliced almonds and coarse sugar. Bake for 30 minutes or until golden brown. Do not overbake.

HONEY CRYSTAL ALMONDS 2 cups whole natural almonds 1/4 cup honey 2 tablespoons butter 1 cup turbinado sugar Spread almonds in a shallow pan. Place in cold oven; turn oven to 350° and roast 12 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until well roasted. Over medium heat in medium saucepan, heat honey and butter to boiling.

Reduce heat to medium low, simmer 2 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Add almonds; simmer and stir 2 minutes. Using slotted spoon, transfer almonds to baking sheet lined with parchment paper or waxed paper; spread in single layer and cool slightly. Toss almonds with sugar to coat using a medium plastic food storage bag.

ALMOND AND HONEY COOKIE 1/2 cup butter 1/4 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup honey 1 egg 1 tsp. vanilla 1 1/2 cup flour 1 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. baking soda 1/2 cup almonds, chopped

ALMOND COOKIES 1 cup butter 3/4 cup sugar 1 tsp. pure almond extract 2 cups flour 1/2 tsp. baking powder 1/4 tsp. salt Glaze: 1/2 cup powdered sugar 1 tsp. pure almond extract 2 - 3 tsp. water

Preheat oven to 400°. Cream together the butter, sugar, honey and egg.

Add the vanilla, blend. Combine flour, baking powder and baking soda; add the almonds to the flour mixture and blend. Add flour mixture to butter mixture and mix well. Place the cookie mixture on a buttered cookie sheet by spoonfuls. Add a slivered almond to the top of each cookie before baking. Bake for 12-15 minutes.

In a bowl blend the butter, sugar, and almond extract. In a separate bowl mix the flour, baking powder, and salt. Add the flour mixture 2 tablespoons at a time to the butter mixture until completely combined.

The dough will be stiff.

Roll into small balls and flatten slightly. Cook for 7 minutes only (they will not look done) at 400° on a lightly greased pan or parchment lined pan. Cool cookies until they are just warm and place sliced almonds on top of each cookie.

For the glaze: Combine powdered sugar, almond extract, and water.

Drizzle a spoonful of glaze on top of the almonds and cookie.

A child’s excited glow warms the hearts of local couples The glow on the faces of children when they see Santa Claus approaching gleams brighter than any holiday decorations to those who play the jolly gift bearer and his wife each December.

Two local couples who have served as Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus at annual Christmas events in Creston say they get more out of the experience than the children.

“The best thing was the view we had when the kids saw us arrive in the fire truck,” said Penny Oetken. “The looks on their faces. The ones who truly believed, their eyes would just light up. That’s what made it special.”

Penny and husband Bill Oetken appeared as Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus at Creston Elks Lodge Christmas parties for 14 years starting in 1999.

“It was enjoyable,” Bill said.

“We had Butch Miller with us as Hermie the Elf. He wore the tights and glued on big pointy ears and all that. If any of the younger kids were scared, that’s where (Penny) came in. She’d talk to them and have them stand

by Santa for the parents to take pictures, if they were too scared to sit with Santa.”

Likewise for Tim and Bobbie Lyons of Creston.

Tim, a native of Dubuque, had started appearing as Santa 10 years ago after answering an ad for the Kennedy Mall there. He also appeared there as the Easter Bunny.

The couple filled a void at Cradle 2 Crayons Daycare in Creston three years ago. Lori Clayton, who operates the daycare, said they’ve been great in their roles as the jolly couple from the North Pole.

“They try to make the kids happy and they really care about the children,” Clayton said. “They like to see them happy. They didn’t charge us, but we like to get them something for helping with the kids like that.”

“It’s kind of funny,” Tim said. “When you get there you hear them all chattering. And the minute we come in, ringing the sleigh bells, they clam up real quick. The younger ones who think Santa is really there, they don’t know what to say. It’s what you see in their faces that makes it so enjoyable.”

One year a young girl told Tim she needed a favor because her mommy couldn’t afford a gift for her that year.

“I said, ‘Santa will see what he can do’,” Tim said. “She said, ‘Thank you, Santa!’ and gave me a big hug. It was sad in a way, but it made her feel better at that moment. It makes me feel good to make the kids happy.”

Both the Oetkens and Lyons have been involved in adopted families at holiday time in their roles. The Oetkens arrived at the home of the adopted family in the fire truck before heading to the Elks party. The Lyons shop for a family Clayton has selected as the adopted family.

“I always grew up thinking it’s better to give than receive,” Bobbie said. “You get goosebumps and the chills, feeling the good vibe when you make them happy.” LP

LAWN CARE changes with the Local lawn-care specialists provide tips for fall lawn care.

Days shorten with nightfall creeping earlier and earlier. Temperatures start to cool off as the air turns crisp.

Leaves morph from the vibrant green of summertime to auburn and rust as they float through the air, dropping to the ground.

Autumn is in the air.

But, just because fall has arrived doesn’t mean it’s time to stop caring for your lawn.

Lawn care during the fall is just as important, if not more important, than lawn care during the spring and summer months.

Dave Jennett, co-owner of Green Valley Pest Control and Lawn Care, said there are certain practices that, when completed in the fall, can improve your lawn.

Mainly, fertilizing your lawn in the fall is a better practice than in the spring.

“A lot of people will fertilize their lawn once and they do it during the spring,” Jennett said. “If you fertilize in the spring, that’s when the above-ground parts are growing rapidly, so you’re basically going to encourage more leaf growth and more mowing. If you fertilize in the fall, it goes to the below-ground parts, which are the roots, and that’s what makes for a thicker, healthier lawn that will stand the winter better. That’s one thing people overlook.”

Fertilizing is one of several lawn-care services Green Valley Pest Control and Lawn Care provides its customers. The company also sprays weeds, provides mowing services, aeration and lawn irrigation installation and service.

“You don’t want to fertilize too late in the season,” said Chad Woods, who also provides lawn-care services locally. “When you fertilize too late, it encourages root growth, so you’re not really doing your turf a favor.

There is no hard/fast date kind of thing. Mother Nature kind of tells you when you’re done for the season.”

Carey Lynam of Lynam Lawn Care LLC provides another option locally for lawn-care services.

“Fall is a better time to be spraying for weeds,” Lynam said. “Fall is a good time, with bare spots, to re-seed.”

The ideal time to spray for weeds comes after the first frost of the year hits.

“That’s a good time because a lot of the gardens and flowers are done, so there’s less of a chance of killing something you don’t want to kill,” Jennett said.

“Whatever the first frost doesn’t kill, the chemical will kill,” Lynam said. “Then, you’ll have a nice, clean yard in the spring.”

Jennett advises to mow the lawn at 3 inches during the summer and fall months, when it’s drier. During the spring, when it’s typically wetter, lawns can be mowed at 2 1/2, even 2 inches sometimes, as the grass grows well with lots of rain. But, as it dries off, it’s best to not set the mowing deck below 3 inches.

“The biggest common mistake people make in their yard is they mow too short,” Woods said. “If you mow it too short, it never allows it to grow thick. A thick, lush yard is your best defense for weeds. Some people scalp it and some people don’t mow it enough.”

Removing fallen leaves from your lawn is another critical component of fall lawn care.

Jennett warns against chopping leaves up and leaving them laying on the lawn.

“If you have a really heavy leaf cover, that can smother the grass and thin it,” he said. “So, we encourage people to actually suck their leaves up and take them to the compost site.”

Once a 3- to 4-inch-thick layer of leaves forms on the lawn, it is time to begin picking leaves up.

However, the longer leaves stay on the ground, the greater chance the leaves will be rained on. Once the leaves are wet, the process of picking them up becomes more difficult.

“Your yard needs a fall clean-up,” Woods said. “You could aerate and fertilize, make sure you rake up your leaves and get your landscape trimmed up.” SV

This year’s Festival of Trees in Creston will run December 1-3. All money raised will assist victims and survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence in Union County.

Well, you won’t find too many causes better than this one to support.

This year marks the 11th-annual Festival of Trees, a silent auction event held at American Homes Design Center in Creston that raises money to assist victims and survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence in Union County.

“It’s good for those affected to know they are supported by the community. That’s what this event does,” said Chelsea Jenkins, a specialist with Crisis Intervention and Advocacy Center, which organizes this event.

Here’s how the Festival of Trees works: Local citizens decorate artificial trees, wreaths and other holiday decor and then deliver their donated projects to American Homes Design Center before Dec. 1. Jenkins emphasizes decorators aren’t just limited to trees.

“They can use their imagination,” Jenkins said. “Wreaths have been popular in the three years I’ve been involved and so have the mason jars with candles in them. It just needs to be holiday decor. Many of the ideas come from Pinterest.”

Festival of Trees will run from Dec. 1 to 3 this year. During that time, you will have the chance to bid on the donated projects in the showroom at American Homes Design Center, 101 N. Walnut St. The highest volume of foot traffic for the event comes Dec. 1, the night of the Lighted Christmas Parade in Creston.

“There was somewhere around 25 (projects) last year for people to browse,” said Ronda Katzer with American Homes Design Center.

“And, we have some really creative people in town who put quite a bit of time and money into these projects. These are decor items that you will be able to take home and use immediately.”

The highest bidder for each project will pick up their item at American Homes Design Center on Dec. 4. Katzer said they will shrink-wrap trees and other items, if requested, so decorations don’t fall off and for ease of transportation.

Celebration When it comes to traditions, Brian Zachary and his family have many. The holiday season for them teems with family and friends, food and fun, as they celebrate the Christmas and Hanukkah holidays.

“We celebrate Hanukkah here. My brother’s family is in St. Louis so we do go there for Passover sometimes,” Brian said. “We’re a blended family, so we go and get a live Christmas tree at Harmony Christmas Tree Farms. It’s here, very local. We have a pickle for our Christmas tree. And, we also light the menorah.”

Hanukkah is a celebration of light, commemorated by lighting each candle of a ninepronged menorah over the course of eight days, with the center candle used as a helper. The holiday is dedicated to the Holy Temple, which was rededicated during the Maccabean Revolt in Jerusalem.

“We have a really beautiful menorah,” said Cecilia Zachary, Brian and his wife Jean Weisshaar’s daughter. “We usually have really colorful candles. I like it when all the wax melts and it’s really pretty.”

“Hanukkah is fun. We light the menorah,” said their son, Jacob Zachary. “On Christmas, we get to bring the box of stuff from the attic. We also buy a tree, a real tree, so we don’t have to spray pine scent all over.”

Brian, who is Jewish, cooks for his family and friends who attend the Judaist celebration. He prepares matzoh ball soup and latkes with homemade applesauce, which are traditional Jewish foods prepared with oil.

“Everybody comes over for a meal, like all of our local family. So, there’s usually 19 people and I’m usually cooking,” Brian said. “I like cooking for the family. That’s how I show my love, so it’s nice to have a bunch of people over.”

Christmas is the annual celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, which takes place Dec. 25. It’s traditional to set up a Christmas tree and decorate it and open presents from friends and family during the event.

“I also like getting up the morning on Christmas and watching the kids unwrap the presents. That’s classic. I grew up with that, too,” Brian said.

On Christmas, he prepares a meal of turkey and mashed potatoes, as well as other holiday staples.

“That’s usually a lunchtime thing. If there’s still farming, the farmers will go back out and keep farming,” Brian said. “But, if not, then we nap and stuff like that.”

That evening, Brian and his family will attend a family gathering in Greenfield, where they have desserts and drinks and play games.

On Christmas Eve, Brian, Jean and their children attend a Catholic mass, enjoying the prayer and music of the ceremony. This year, Hanukkah runs from Dec. 24 to Jan. 1, so they will celebrate two holidays around the same time. BP

As the weather turns from sunny and warm to windy and cool, the summer season is behind us. But, that leaves the door open for changing leaves, blustery days and, eventually, the sprinkling of snow.

With that in mind, Creston will be home to a variety of events during the holiday season.

The season begins with the Holiday to Holiday Extravaganza scheduled for Nov. 7. The next event is the annual ladies’ night scheduled Nov. 10 from 5 to 8 p.m. at True Value and Java J’s.

“It kind of gives people an opportunity to go out and get hot cider and other things,” said Ellen Gerharz, exectuive director of the Creston Chamber of Commerce. “It’s just a fun and relaxing event for people to get a little bit of early shopping done and decorating in their own home.”

After Thanksgiving, when snow becomes a real possibility in the Creston area and the holiday decorations go up, “No Place Like Creston for the Holidays” will be just around the corner.

The event is scheduled Dec. 1-4 and is kicked off with the lighted Christmas parade 7 p.m. Dec. 1 in uptown Creston.

“We just invite whoever wants to come to come,” Gerharz said. “I think it kind of snuck up on a lot of people, but in the next two months we’re going to be well into the holiday season. I will say this: one of the popular things, the SWCC basketball team, will come and carol in the mealsite.”

The college basketball players will be at the mealsite in the restored Creston Depot from 5:15 to 6 p.m. Dec. 1, alongside the Appalachia Service Project soup supper scheduled from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

Throughout the rest of the weekend, there will be carolling and the Festival of Trees at the American Home Design Center.

“What they hope is that a lot of civic and service clubs will donate a tree,” Gerharz said.

“Going on last year, they had, between trees and wreaths and centerpieces, they probably had at least 30 to 40. And then, because the American Home Designs building is so nice, to bring in those trees, it really makes it a holiday-like atmosphere.”

On Dec. 10, Santa Claus will be at the restored Creston Depot, and Creston Animal Rescue Effort volunteers will be hosting an arts and crafts fundraiser from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the depot.

St. Malachy students will have an all-school Christmas program 7:30 p.m. also at Creston High School. After each issue of Creston Living is mailed out, I am still amazed at all of the positive comments we receive from readers and advertisers...and for that I thank you very much! When we sit down to plan each issue the number of opportunities and events happening in our local area are very impressive. Our goal with each issue is to point out unique aspects about our local community that we as residents can appreciate! Always try to “Live Local...Buy Local...Enjoy Local.”

We plan to continue publishing Creston Living twice a year with a Spring/ Summer issue along with a Fall/Winter issue. We always welcome ideas from our readers for stories and features in the magazine. As you and your family prepare for the Fall and Winter months and all the festivities they bring, I hope you can use this issue of Creston Living to get a few ideas of how to enjoy them in the Creston community.

As we finish up this issue of Creston Living, we are also looking forward to our 7th Annual Holiday To Holiday Extravaganza that will be held at SWCC on Monday, November 7. This year’s event will once again be a fun-filled evening full of holiday recipes, decorating ideas and much more.
