Crest Area Theatre continues to provide arts, culture in Creston Jerry and Linda Huffman’s love story is a romance meant for under the bright lights of the stage, so it’s only fitting they met through Crest Area Theatre.

Jerry moved to Creston in 1990 and quickly became involved with Crest Area Theatre.

In those early years of his Creston residency, he attended a performance of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” where he saw Linda performing. He asked a coworker to introduce him to Linda, but the meeting never materialized.

Fast forward to the next winter and Linda attended a performance of “The Boys Next Door,” where she saw Jerry perform.

“He was wonderful,” Linda said. “It was funny and it was poignant. Afterward, I went backstage to shake their hands ... and he remembered me from the musical.”

Jerry told Linda he wanted her to try out for “The Music Man,” which he was going to be directing.

“We had auditions in May and we were married in December,” Linda said. “We’re still involved in community theatre.”

Just like the Huffmans’ love for each other and for community theatre has persisted, so has Crest Area Theatre.

Crest Area Theatre (CAT) began in 1973 as a 501(3)c nonprofit called Creston Community Theatre Inc. The group started because Southwestern Community College had a strong drama department and the director wanted to have a community theatre in the area.

The first productions started in 1974, and there are still a few members who were actively involved in the early stages of CAT who remain active today.

Those early productions were often performed on the small stage at the old Lincoln Elementary School. Now, performances are mostly held at the SWCC Performing Arts Center.

“We’ve tried to keep it going,” said Linda, currently serving as president of CAT’s board of directors. Jerry serves as vice president. “People have a lot of commitments now. We used to have a season and we had four shows a year.”

The number of productions has decreased in recent years with the increase in other activities available to residents.

But, Jerry said the hope is for CAT to once again hold a season, although it may be three shows in the season as opposed to four.

“There are more things to do now,” Jerry said. “All the multimedia we have and all the social media and all the games, there’s more to do than there used to be in the community. So fewer people have the time to be involved. It is a time consuming effort. When you’re doing a play, you’re in rehearsal for six to eight weeks.”

After starting with smaller productions, such as “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” and “Joesph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.”

Productions have grown in size and scope to include shows such as “Inherit the Wind,” “Oklahoma!” and “Oliver.”

Currently, CAT is preparing for its winter holiday show. This year’s holiday show will be “The Christmas Family Variety Show,” and features a pair of one-act plays, as well as madrigal singing and possibly some cowboy poetry.

Lynne Schlaht will direct a one-act play called “The Living Nativity,” which Linda described as a comedy “about a nativity scene with real people that goes very bad. It’s going to be fun.”

Julia Weisshaar-Mullin will direct the other one-act play, “Wenceslas,” which tells the tale of King Wenceslas.

CAT has also moved into the world of murder mystery dinner theaters in recent years. Jerry said other possible show ideas in the near future could be an improv show and a talent-type variety show.

“In the summer, we might do some variety show of singing, dancing and comedy,” he said. “The other thing we’ve done is murder mystery.

We get the audience involved, feed them a meal and have six to eight suspects of who did it. Then the audience gets to be in teams. They team up and ask the suspects questions.”

Jerry and Linda said they hope to secure more corporate sponsorships for future shows. For this past summer’s “Godspell” performance, they received sponsorships from First National Bank, Tyler Insurance and Powers Funeral Home.

They also hope to see an increase in members, whether it be actors, directors, set builders or working behind the scenes.

“Community theatre is so important,” Linda said. “We really believe in it.”

“Our mission statement is to provide opportunities in live theatre to members of the community,” Jerry said. “Opportunities in live theatre might be seeing it in the audience or working backstage, acting, playing music in the pit orchestra and singing. We’re trying to keep it alive here. It’s so much fun to come to a live production of live theatre if you haven’t done it before.” SV

Experienced Creston-area artists, hobbyists turn raw materials into fine art

As the seasons begin to turn, local artists are getting creative in a variety of mediums.

Woodworker Roger Francis of Creston makes wooden bowls, vases and other hand-crafted items using a technique called segmented wood-turning.

Some of his completed pieces include more than 100 pieces, or “segments” of wood. The segments are glued together before being worked and carved on a wood lathe into a finished product.

“It’s challenging,” said Francis. “And with segmented (turning), the possibilities are limitless. Because you see a design, you can copy it, or you can come up with your own design — there’s different colors of wood, kinds of wood — the possibilities are limitless.”

Francis has been practicing segmented wood-turning for more than seven years, though he has been woodworking for many more than that. He doesn’t use any patterns for his work.

“There’s a fair amount of trial and error in this,” said Francis. “We’re always learning. You learn by experience the more you do — the more tricks of the trade you learn.”

And how long do Francis’ pieces usually take him to complete?

“I don’t keep track of time at all,” said Francis. “But it is time consuming — you have to do it in stages.”

According to Francis, a big part of his hobby is interacting with fellow woodworkers.

“Since I’ve joined this woodturner’s club, I’ve learned several things just talking to other guys who’ve got a workshop and are turning. We have our meeting once a month (in Des Moines) and it’s usually pretty lively conversation. You got 30 or 40 guys in there, and you really have to speak up to be heard.”

Francis often gives his work away as gifts, and has been asked more than once if it was for sale.

“My first project I usually give to my wife,” said Francis.

“And then I’ll do duplicates for my two daughters, and my granddaughter. I’ve never tried to sell anything. There’s people that’ve asked me, but it’s a hobby. And if you start selling stuff, then it’s a job. People will want this, or that, and right now I can do it with leisure — when the weather’s good.”

Weaving Susan Walker of Creston both paints and turns reed into baskets in her free time.

“I started in 1993,” said Walker. “Some friends of mine knew of a lady who was giving lessons, and they kept telling me ‘You should take some of her classes.’ And, when I later found out she was going to move, I figured I should investigate, and I took two classes. And I’ve been kind of self-taught from there.”

Walker explained that an average-sized basket takes about five or six hours to make. The reed plant is soaked, split and bent into shape once the basket-making begins.

what’s cookin’ in kyp’s kitchen CRANBERRIES The cranberry, along with the blueberry and Concord grape, is one of North America’s three native fruits that are commercially grown. Cranberries were first used by Native Americans, who discovered the wild berry’s versatility as a food, fabric dye and healing agent. Today, cranberries are commercially grown throughout the northern part of the United States and are available in both fresh and processed forms. Enjoy these recipes that have been favorites in our family for many years. Smakelijk eten! aside. Beat the sugar and eggs for 3 minutes. Add the cooled melted butter and almond extract (I used about t 1/2 tsp); beat until combined.

Add the flour to the sugar/butter mixture and mix on low until combined.

Stir in the cranberries and chopped almonds. Pour the mixture into the prepared pan. Spread evenly with an offset spatula (if you have one).

Sprinkle with the reserved almonds. Bake for about 50 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out with crumbs, not wet. (Cover with foil during the last 5 minutes of baking to prevent over-browning, if necessary.) Cool in the pan on a cooling rack. Makes 12 bars.

CRANBERRY ALMOND BARS 3/4 cups unsalted butter 1/3 cups slivered almonds, divided 1 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 1/8 tsp. salt 1 1/2 cup sugar 2 whole eggs 1 tsp. almond extract 2 cups cranberries, fresh Melt the butter and set aside to cool. Reserve 2 tablespoons (I used about 4 Tbps.) of the almonds for the top of the batter and chop the remaining almonds (I used 1/3 cup chopped almonds). Set aside. Preheat oven to 350°. Butter an 8 x 8 inch pan. Whisk together the flour and salt; set

Place roast in lightly greased slow cooker. Combine cranberry sauce, sugar, cranberry or apple juice, mustard, and cloves. Pour over roast.

Cover. Cook on Low 6-8 hours, or until meat is tender. (It was done in 6 hours.) Remove roast and keep warm. Skim fat from juices. Measure 2 cups, adding water if necessary. Pour into saucepan. Bring to boil over medium heat. Combine the cornstarch and cold water to make a paste.

Stir into gravy. Cook and stir until thickened. Season with salt. Serve with sliced pork, mashed potatoes and a vegetable.

CRANBERRY-MAPLE CHICKEN

CRANBERRY CAKE WITH A BUTTER SAUCE

For sauce: in a small saucepan combine cranberry sauce, maple syrup, catsup, vinegar, brown sugar and onion powder. Bring to boiling; reduce heat. Simmer, uncovered, for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove saucepan from heat.

Sauce: 1 cup sugar, 1 Tbsp. flour, 1/2 cup butter, 1/2 cup milk or half and half, 1 Tbsp. vinegar, and 1 Tbsp. vanilla. Mix together flour and sugar in a saucepan. Add remaining ingredients except the vanilla. Bring to a boil, remove from heat, stir in vanilla and serve warm over cake.

Preheat grill. Place chicken, bone side down, on grill rack. Cover and grill for 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 hours or until tender and no longer pink, brushing occasionally with some of the sauce during the last 10 minutes of grilling.

To serve, cut each chicken half into 2 or 3 portions. Reheat and serve the remaining sauce with the chicken. Makes 4 to 6 servings.

Youth sports play a major role in nearly every community across the country.

Creston is no exception.

Baseball, softball and football dominate the late spring, summer and fall youth sports scene with kids from early elementary school all the way through middle school.

The youth football season is winding to a close as Creston once again had enough kids to field three teams in the Pride of Iowa Youth Football League.

The program was started by John Shiltz, who is now the Creston Commissioner. Shiltz moved the Creston teams from a league in Indianola over to the Pride of Iowa Youth Football League just a few seasons after he took the reigns.

Since taking over the program, Creston youth football has gone from one team of 36 kids, to three teams each with approximately 36 participants, about 110 kids in total.

The three teams are split randomly in an effort to keep them all on competitive skill levels.

Reshuffling happens occasionally, but Shiltz has said the goal is to keep the kids on the same teams as they grow older once they are selected.

“I made a lot of relationships that I’ve kept through,” said Pudenz.

“Even in the Pride of Iowa Youth Football senior game, I still have friends that I talk to every once in a while.”

Youth padded football has drawn criticism from scientists and parents alike surrounding continuous new information coming to light about head injuries, more specifically concussions.

But local coaches, parents and former players aren’t worried because they believe the coaches in the leagues are teaching proper tackling, limiting contact to the head.

“I have complete confidence in these coaches,” said Katy Wiley, mother of Conner Wiley, a sixth grader on Creston’s varsity red team. “I think they’re good at watching these boys, and if someone does smack their head, they are good at sitting them.”

Tackling correctly is an essential part of the game at all levels, but youth football has seen the most speculation due to the inexperience of its players.

But for Bolinger, once players start to grasp the concept of tackling and lose the timid nature that comes with inexperience, injury problems aren’t much of a concern.

“When they start seeing the progression and they start understanding what we are teaching, that usually saves more injuries,” said Bolinger.

As the youth padded football league winds down, the board for the youth baseball and softball leagues are gearing up for its newest addition, winter camps.

Creston residents bring classic cars back to life through restoration process.

The shop is packed nearly to the brim with various car bodies precisely positioned to maximize space, as if the person who arranged them in the shop was playing a game of Tetris. Car parts are strewn about the shop floor, some lying on the ground after being taken out of a car, others neatly stored away in boxes to be used later.

Inside, shop owner Jim Anthony flips a portable light hanging from a car frame off. But the space remains lit up, as Anthony glows while he talks about the cars he has worked diligently to restore to their former glory.

But, for Anthony, it’s not just about restoring cars to their former glory. It’s about taking it to the next level.

“I always tell people once I get a car from somebody, it’s going to have the best care it’s ever had,” Anthony said. “That’s just my deal.

“I think it’s cool to save something from scrapyards or from sitting in a barn rusting away. This one sat down in southern Missouri for 15 years in a pasture and I came across it.”

Just days earlier, Anthony purchased a 1954 Ford pickup that had sat motionless inside a barn for 40 years. When Anthony brought the pickup to his shop, it was the first time the faded blue truck with the red, pinstriped racks on the bed had seen daylight in 40 years.

Anthony has been restoring cars for 15 years, though those 15 years were interrupted momentarily while his children were in school. The first car he restored was a 1965 Malibu Super Sport, then stopped restoring cars until his children graduated.

When he picked the hobby back up, Anthony found the car he’d always wanted – a 1965 Chevelle two-door wagon. He bought the car and finished it before moving on to a 1962 Chevy Nova drag car, which he calls the coolest car he’ll ever own.

He also owns a Chevy II Nova wagon which he has left original. Currently, he’s working on a 1965 four-door Chevelle wagon.

Anthony has a pair of other projects lined up for when he has more time to complete them, including a Corvair wagon and a Ford Cabover pickup similar to the first tow truck his father owned. Anthony plans to restore the Cabover as a tribute truck to his father, and eventually use it as a hauler for his other restored vehicles when he travels to car shows.

Likewise, Chris Loudon, 33, has found a niche within the car show community.

Loudon got his start building vehicles when he built a 1999 Sportster motorcycle from the ground up. Now, he owns a 1994 Toyota featuring a yellow and black skull paint scheme that he did some work on after purchasing.

Loudon saw the ‘94 Toyota on the cover of Mini Truck magazine and always wanted it. After making some trades, he came to own the vehicle.

Recently, he purchased a black 1960 Ford F100 that he plans to completely restore.

“It’s cool to go to car shows and show it (the 1994 Toyota) off, but I want that pride of ‘I built it,’” Loudon said.

Loudon thought the 1960 Ford F100 looked “different and neat” when he saw it. It was running and driveable when he bought it, but needed improvements.

This winter, he plans to start work on the truck. He’s already started building the motor for it, which is a new endeavor for him.

“I’ve never built a motor in my life,” Loudon said. “I went on YouTube and bought LS books. It should be 400-450 horse when I’m done with it. I built it myself with a couple of buddies.”

The rebuild of the truck will be a slow process, as Loudon is working out of his own garage and using hand tools for the most part.

“This one is going to be a totally different truck in two to three years,” he said. “When I built my bike, ... I was like, ‘Why can’t I do a vehicle?’ It’ll be my first one. It might take two to three years, but it’s a goal I’ve always wanted to do.”

Loudon’s trucks both have air ride suspension systems installed, so when they sit in his shop or at car shows, they essentially lay directly on the ground.

He said some people look at his trucks differently because of the air ride suspension, but he loves it because it’s different.

Famous gasser Anthony’s pride and joy, and the car that he keeps coming back to is the ‘62 Nova drag car.

“It was owned by a famous drag racer from Des Moines named Vernon Moats,” Anthony said. “It just has a lot of history to it and ... it’s a one-of-a-kind car. It truly is.”

Anthony was going to build a gasser and, while at the Greenfield swap meet looking for a tunnel ram in 2015, ran into a gentleman who told him about someone in Ames who had one that was an old drag car from the ‘60s.

Anthony got the owner’s number from where he worked and went to look at the car. The owner was asking more money for it than Anthony could afford to spend, so he passed on it.

A year later, he was back at the swap meet and ran into the same gentleman who told him about the car in Ames. This time, the man said he was considering buying the drag car.

“I knew right then there couldn’t be two of them up there,” Anthony said. “So I called the guy back, bought the car and had him hold it until spring when I had more room.”

The drag car had been through seven different owners previously, and when Anthony bought the car, he had no idea who had owned it.

One day, a man found Anthony through Craigslist and Anthony started telling him the story of how he came to own the gasser.

“He said, ‘I think I might have built that car,’” Anthony said. “I told him a little more about it and he said, ‘I can almost guarantee you I built that car back in 1967.’ Then he told me he bought it from Vernon Moats. He drove over from Knoxville on a Sunday to see it and I wheeled it out of the garage. He took one look at it and said, ‘I built that car back in 1967.’”

The man had photos of when he restored the car in 1967. So, when Anthony and Mike Warren began restoring the1962 Chevy Nova, they built it almost exactly as it was in 1967.

Now, when Anthony takes the Nova, which features a dentist with “Dr. Dan” written on his white coat and the word “Novocaine” written across the passenger door, to car shows, he has a display that shows the vehicle when it was built in 1967 and how it looks now, with before and after photos from both builds.

“That hardly ever happens,” Anthony said. “It’s just a freak thing that fell into my lap. It’s got a one-piece tilt front end that I drove almost all the way to Canada to get because they don’t make them anymore that style.”

Anthony also discovered that Frosty Herrington hand-painted all the lettering on the car back in 1967, and after being put in touch with Herrington, had him hand-paint all the lettering on the car again.

“That’s definitely the coolest car I’ll ever own,” Anthony said.

Lifelong passion It’s the hunt for cars, and uncovering the history behind them, that gives Anthony such a rush.

He developed his love for cars as a child, having grown up in a salvage yard owned by his father.

“It’s never left me,” he said. “My wife says you can take the man out of the junkyard, but you can’t take the junkyard out of the man.”

Without the support of his wife of 43 years, Nancy, Anthony wouldn’t be able to pursue his passion of restoring cars.

He said it’s not uncommon to invest $15,000 to $25,000 into a single project.

But, he sees the projects as just that – an investment.

“To me, it’s better than putting your money in the bank,” Anthony said. “They never depreciate. To me, they’re worth everything. The stuff I buy is so cool, you don’t see very many of them and I hate to give them up. Like the drag car, I could never replace that car. I had one gentleman at the Lenox car show ask me what I want for it and I had no idea what to put on it because it’s a one-of-a-kind car.”

Loudon agrees with Anthony – without the support of his wife, Dawn, there’s no way he’d be able to continue traveling to car shows and working on cars.

It’s a pastime he’s become passionate about.

“It just gives me something to pass my time,” he said. “It’s something you have to really enjoy and know what to do. I never thought I could build a vehicle.”

Through his travels to car shows, Loudon has made numerous friends.

“The whole car community thing is cool. It’s a big family,” Loudon said. “I’m probably one of the youngest guys around here that goes to car shows. I hope a lot of young kids can get back into it, because you don’t see a lot of young kids wanting to get into automotives or into cars. It’s a lifestyle.”

Walker has woven a variety of different kinds of baskets, including bushel baskets, gathering baskets, totes, bread baskets, wool-drying baskets and something called a Nantucket basket — a kind of basket formed over a wooden mold that sailors used to make, which was often crafted on a piece of a ship’s mast itself. She estimates she’s woven more than 50 or 60 different styles of baskets.

“And the hardest technique I’ve tried before was using a twill weave,” said Walker. “And using different caning material — it was new and kind of hard to do, but I enjoyed it.”

Walker also paints in her free time. Her work was featured at the Creston restored Depot art gallery several years ago.

“I was an art major in college, so I’ve done plenty of painting,” said Walker. “Some of my favorite subject matter is chairs and doors. They kind of have some biblical meaning behind them.”

One such piece is called “Come Out of the Darkness.” It pictures two open doors along a single hallway. One door, with a cross emblazoned on front, leads to darkness and sits atop blood-red carpet, while the other leads to a shining white light.

“Jesus refers to himself as a door in scripture,” said Walker. “And so one of the doors represents Him, opening the door for us to come out of that darkness through His shed blood, and into His light — His eternal light, through Christ.”

Everything from mugs, plates, vases and even Christmas ornaments can serve as canvasses for Gile.

After, and during the process of painting, Gile fires her projects in a kiln to make permanent the paint. Her projects may require anywhere from 4 to 10 firings.

There are two different kinds of porcelain — that which has a shiny, glossy finish and then something called bisque porcelain. Bisque porcelain doesn’t have a glaze applied to it.

“Porcelain is just a type of clay that we like to use,” said Gile. “This started probably 3,000 years ago, in China. They were the first to do it. At that time, they developed porcelain and it was actually more valuable to people than gold.”

Gile uses a variety of different kinds of paints, other mediums and firing techniques to turn her porcelain pieces into artwork. She has been painting china and porcelain since 1997.

“I toyed with the idea of, when I went to college, majoring in art,” said Gile. “But I really hadn’t done much in high school, and I didn’t get much (support) from my art teacher in high school, so I majored in speech, drama and english and then acting in graduate school.

“And I didn’t actually pick (painting) up because I wanted to. I did it because my mom complained to me that we never did anything together — and I’m an only child — you know, hit me with a bucket of guilt!

“And so this lady advertised beginning porcelain painting lessons,” said Gile. “So I signed my mother and myself up. And when the time came, my mother promptly told me she wasn’t going. And it made me so mad that I would’ve crawled to get there. But about a year later, I was hooked.”

Gile now belongs to a local porcelain painting group called the Creston Area Porcelain Painters.

Among monthly meetings and other activities, the group regularly paints and donates mugs to the Greater Regional Medical Center cancer treatment center.

“So if somebody comes in,” said Gile, “And they have to have chemo, or radiation, or what-have-you, they can take a cup anytime they finish.

“It’s been popular,” said Gile. “We get nice thank-you notes. And I get something out of it too, because the more you paint, the better you get. The better you handle your brushes.” AF

The camps had such a big turnout last year that the clinics had to be split between younger and older age groups. Scott Driskell’s feeling was the kids weren’t getting enough small group instruction.

The goal for the winter camps this offseason is expected to run from mid-January through sometime in March or April with the Little League season just following the winter camp.

The camp itself will be hosted indoors at the Early Childhood Center gymnasium, including a batting cage, nets and portable mounds brought from Creston Community High School.

“They’ve been gracious enough to let us use (them),” said Driskell.

With enrollment numbers continuing to climb, Co-presidents Cory Latham and Driskell decided the winter clinics would add a new way to keep kids’ minds on the game throughout the offseason.

Creston’s youth baseball and softball leagues have seen steady increase in participants, nearing the 360 mark for last season.

The camps will be another area for coaches to enforce solid fundamental tools that will allow the kids to continue to advance.

“Fundamentals of fielding and throwing,” said Teri Keeler. “Those that want to pitch, we have offered pitching lessons in winter. Basic skills of softball and games situations.”

As much as little league instructors wish to focus on skills of the game, they know it’s about the youth involved having fun.

Of course, Driskell, Latham and Keeler all hope that everyone will stay involved and attempt to compete at the high school level.

“Our goal as a little league board is to create problems for our high school,” said Driskell. “And I say that tongue-in-cheek for (CCHS Softball Coach) Mike McCabe and (CCHS baseball) coach Steve Birchard in that our kids have such good experience in Little League that they all want to play baseball and softball.”

Both youth padded football and youth little league are heavily reliant upon parents. Multiple parents are needed to coach each team and the heads of each league couldn’t overstate their importance.

“It’s critical,” said Driskell about parent involvement. “You’re looking at 70 coaches or more. ... It’s one thing to get them signed up for Little League, but then to get them to two or three practices a week, plus games when they get started, that’s a big commitment for our families.”

“Every year we have to have coaches volunteer to coach,” said Latham. “We have a pretty good group of parents in Creston; they’re pretty involved.”

Funding, just like in anything, is a major component of both youth padded football and little league.

Padded football uses registration fees and any other fundraising efforts directed toward new equipment.

Little League takes a similar approach, but hopes the $40 registration fee and advertising is enough the keep the league on its feet.

“We go to local business for sponsorships, their names go on the back of the jersey for advertisements,” said Driskell.

“We try to stay away from fundraising because our local businesses get hit up so much we don’t feel that’s fair to our families and our businesses.”

Cowboy Mounted Shooting The smell of gunpowder quickly fills the senses during a mounted shooting event.

Riders and their horses sprint from one end of the area, through a quick puzzle of balloon alignments and back down with hopes that they are just faster than their opponents – sometimes needing just a hundredth of a second.

Firing their guns without hesitation is a must. Any pause with the trigger-finger or with miscommunication to their horse can result in precious seconds off their final time.

The concept of mounted shooting has been around for centuries. Competitive mounted shooting started in the early1990s before the Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association (CMSA) was eventually formed a few years later in 1994.

The idea was to combine the equestrian riding with cowboy action shooting creating a competitive, fast-paced show where riders competed for trophies and cash prizes alike.

Mounted shooting is a simple concept: ride your horse toward each of the 10 balloons, popping them as fast as you can with 10 black powder bullets fired out of a .45-caliber single-action revolver.

That is about as simple of a breakdown as one can give, before breaking down all the intricacies of the sport, each individual arena and, of course, each one of the 70-plus course designs.

No projectiles are fired out of the gun, rather burning embers of black powder that can pop a balloon up to 20 feet away.

Typically course setups follow a base design of five balloons in a random pattern and five balloons in a straight line.

Riders earn a five-second penalty for any balloon missed. The penalty essentially ends a rider’s attempt at a top time.

“I would say the hardest part of the event is not missing a balloon,” said Jamie Travis, a competitive mounted shooter; one of many in his family. “Usually, when you miss a balloon, you’re running trying to play catch-up, so you’re running faster and that usually leads to more missed balloons.”

The earliest a competition will release the design of the course is the day of the competition. Participants study course guide books in attempts to figure out the fastest way, in theory, to make it down and back. The buck doesn’t stop there, as competitors look for a leg up with books that tell them the best ways to get up and down the course.

The same course may present new challenges at every arena because different dimensions force shooters to adapt to the nuances of each stadium.

Each competition has groupings broken down by skill level, designed to keep beginners and experienced shooters jockeying for points amongst other riders of a similar experience level.

Shooters start in class 1 before working their way up to class 6, which is the highest level. In order to move up a class, riders must get four competition wins against a full class of shooters.

Shooters like Jamie and his dad Bruce travel all over the Midwest to compete throughout the summer. The Travis family will travel to northern Iowa, Nebraska, and host an event or two of their own before making it down to the World Championships in Amarillo, Texas. This year, the World Championships will be the week of Oct. 18-21.

The Travis family and every other shooter looking to compete at the World Championships must qualify for the event.

Creston Fire Chief Todd Jackson is also a competitive mounted shooter having done so for 13 years.

Jackson and the Travis family are all a part of Iowa Mounted Shooters Association, the biggest of three clubs in Iowa. Bruce is the president of the Iowa Association. All three help host shoots around southwest Iowa each year.

All three pointed out the camaraderie between shooters, describing it as one of their favorite parts about mounted shooting.

“We have a good group here. It’s a good group no matter where you go,” said Jackson. “I know one of the local guys broke down in Kansas and a mounted shooter friend of his helped him get going and things like that.

So, it’s a pretty unique organization.”

“I really like the fact that when we run, there is always help from the other shooters,” said Jamie. “They are always saying, ‘Hey, you need to think about running this course this way, don’t do this.’ We’ve gotten to be such good friends because everyone wants to help. Everyone wants to see everyone succeed.”

Bruce initially decided to try mounted shooting after seeing a clinic at the Iowa Horse Fair. Jamie, who has spent his whole life around horses, knew it would be a good fit.

“I like the fact that it takes good coordination as well as horsemanship to do well,” said Bruce.

“We’ve been in horses forever. Our family has been involved in horses for several generations and we use our horses a lot,” said Jamie.

Jackson took a slightly different approach, combining his love of old-west guns with his wife’s love of horses.

After Jackson’s cousin took him to an event, Jackson decided to test his hand.

The communication between rider and horse is crucial for short-term and long-term success in mounted shooting.

A slight mistake in communicating where the horse should go can quickly turn a run sour. Horses are trained to run courses but need direction from their riders.

In order to get a horse adapted to gunfire, riders must first break their horses in, so they aren’t spooked by the sub-sonic blast of pistol fire.

Breaking in a horse Not every horse is fit to stay calm under gunfire, especially one that isn’t trained or hasn’t be around the extreme noise.

To get a horse comfortable with gunfire, one must break it in. Breaking in a horse is a slow, time consuming process that requires patience and persistence. Jaime said that most horses are capable of being broken in, but some never adjust to the pop of gunfire.

“We’ve probably trained 50 horses to do it within the family. We’ve had two of those 50 that would not accept the gunfire,” said Jamie. “Some people use ear plugs to try to take that shock away. We don’t; we find that for the most part our horses hate something stuck in their ear worse than they do the shooting.

“We’ve had some that just go bananas when the gun goes off. One of the funny things we tell people is ‘How do you get your horse to shoot?’ Well you can shoot off any horse once,’” laughed Jamie.

Jackson recently had to retire the horse he had been using for competitions and took a different approach to finding a new horse to ride.

“I bought one from a well-known trainer for mounted shooting horses,” said Jackson. “So she was already broke to shooting.”

Jackson transitioned his last horse by putting him in a stable near the arena to get him used to the gunfire.

Once the horse is broke and won’t get spooked by gunfire, that’s the best time to get the communication down with the animal.

It’s apparent that the riders and horses spend hours training for events. The coordination of both is nothing short of an art form.

As the crops are harvested and the leaves turn to their fall colors, Creston Publishing too has seen many changes. We have had some very exciting additions to our product line in 2017 including the Adair County Free Press and the Fontanelle Observer. With the popularity of our magazines such as Creston Living, Osceola Living and AG Mag, we are exploring the opportunities of adding an Adair County Living magazine. Let us know your thoughts!

Another change is the format and location of our Holiday To Holiday Extravaganza. We have teamed up with the Creston Hy-Vee and this year’s event will be held on Saturday, October 28 in a large tent next to Hy-Vee store.

We will have more vendors and the recipe and decorating demonstrations will be held in the Hy-Vee dining area. This year there is no admission fee, and it will run from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. with kids events such as face painting, clowns and a bouncy house. The St. Malachy Vendor Fair and the Bright Eyes event are also the same day, so this will be a great day to spend in Creston.
