Fall

Time to break out the fashion scarves and ruffled boot socks: while the temperature falls, autumn fashion trends are on the rise.

This autumn, there are a variety of women’s styles to choose from at local clothing stores in Creston.

“Mainly what’s trending is colors and patterns,” said Jennifer Shirbroun, co-owner of Hazel Marie’s. “You’ll see a ton of plaid and flannel, and for colors, burgundy and olive are two hot colors in apparel this year.”

Hazel Marie’s offers classic pieces that play on the trends of the season, such as distressed boyfriend-style jeans or tops with bohemian-style fringe as part of the 70’s style that’s trending.

Kathy Eblen, manager of Schweser’s, also said prints for all ages are trending this autumn.

“The boot leggings, they’ve been in for a couple years. And the southwest look is a different thing,” Eblen said. “We have the ponchos and the long jackets in the southwest look.”

Shirbroun said the 70’s bohemian style is popular this year.

However, she tries “to keep things classic and modern ... that will appeal to a variety of people, but all those pieces do have a bit of trend to them.”

Hazel Marie’s, which has a demographic of women of all ages, is one of several clothing stores in Creston and offers prices generally between $25 and $50 per piece.

Maurices also offers pieces to a wide variety of women, specifically from size 0, extra short, to 24, extra long.

“The flare jeans are coming back. We have a tailored denim trouser pant that is really popular, and also the blinged-

out pockets are still popular,” said Amy Stults, first assistant manager.

Stults said peasant-style tops are trending, as well as large satchel-style handbags, Aztec print, ponchos, wraps and infinity scarves.

“We are full of handbags of all sizes and styles,” Eblen said of Schweser’s. “We have the ones the older ladies like, we have the ones the younger girls like. We just have a variety of styles.

And for scarves, we have tons. We have the infinity scarves, and the regular styles.”

Maurices carries a variety of boots, and offers clothing in prices ranging from $25 to $45. The store rolled out a new loyalty program Oct. 1, so when the customer spends $100, she can get $5 back.

Schweser’s carries trending clothes as well as holiday styles and collegiate apparel for customers at “unbelievably affordable” prices, said Eblen.

Darlene Riley, owner of The Wishing Well and co-owner of Hazel Marie’s, said The Wishing Well also carries a small amount of women’s trends with a focus on Missy’s styles.

“We do have some sweaters and accessories, but we’re not a fullfledged women’s store,” Riley said. “We have some little (fashion) neck scarves, we have the infinities. Kind of a wide array to hit a lot of different types and tastes.”

The Wishing Well, which focuses on children’s clothing, carries Missy’s cuts, such as mid-rise jeans, geared toward women between ages 30 and 70.

the night away Leslie’s Dance Emporium offers five-week couples dance sessions and a new monthly event for couples and their kids If you can walk, you can dance.

That’s Leslie Tyler’s philosophy in teaching couples how to dance, whether it’s two-step or waltz.

“We teach dancing as just patterns of walking,” said Tyler, owner of Leslie’s Dance Emporium. “We’re reaching out to people who usually just sit and watch.”

Though Tyler has taught couples dance classes since 1975, it wasn’t until September that the idea for a one-night Bring Your Own Beverage (BYOB) couples dance class came about. Now, she plans to hold at least one event per month, during which couples are welcome to bring their own drinks if they’d like and bring their children to be watched upstairs.

Couples can still take five-week sessions – in which they learn several types of partner dancing – or simply go out for a one-night session as more of a date night.

Five-week sessions Tyler has owned a studio in Creston for 37 years and has been at 218 N. Pine St., for 17 years. For the past 15 years, her husband Ned has helped run it.

In 1975, Tyler learned couples dances at the Chicken Inn. She began offering couples classes and now teaches them with Ned. He leads the men; she leads the women.

“We have gone through the different phases of country, disco, ballroom,” Tyler said. “We’re flexible enough that whatever the customer is interested in, that’s what we provide.”

At Leslie’s, couples dancing is offered as a five-week session for $60. The next one will begin in January. Those who take the session learn two-step, swing, waltz and Latin styles, such as tango or cha-cha.

Classes are an hour long one night per week for five weeks. There is a beginner class at 7 p.m. and an experienced class at 8 p.m.

“It’s a lot like a date night, and it gives (couples) something to talk about besides what bill they owe or where they need to run the next child,” Tyler said. “It gives them a connection and something to work on together.”

Sarah and Matt Dinham of Murray took a five-week session in October 2014.

“We partly did it just to do something together,” Sarah said. “It was a very fun, laid back atmosphere.”

Parents-kids night out The first BYOB night at Leslie’s was a special request from Gary and Barb Coenen of Creston. The Coenens scheduled a private event at Leslie’s prior to the Sept. 6 wedding of their daughter.

Some of the wedding party and members of both families attended the event Sept. 4 to learn different dances before the wedding. Some brought alcoholic drinks; others just brought water.

“It was very casual,” Barb said. “We all really enjoyed it. Leslie breaks it down to where it’s easy enough for beginners to do, but it’s still interesting for people who have danced before.”

Because the Coenens’ event went so well, the Tylers decided to begin holding an event at

least once a month – more frequently if it becomes a big hit. The first one was Oct. 17.

“It’s like a parents-kids night out,” Tyler said.

Couples are welcome to bring their own beverages to these events, which take place from 6 to 9 p.m. Couples who want to bring their kids can drop them off at Leslie’s at 6 p.m., go out for supper, then return at 7 p.m. for dance class. Kids are watched upstairs by staff hired by the Tylers. They can play on the mats, watch movies and play games.

“We are getting the social dance aspect going with people,” Tyler said. “Bring whatever you want to drink. We’ll teach for an hour, then just play music for another hour. It creates a really fun atmosphere.”

We b s t e r. . . a l s o known as a blondie brownie or bar...is a rich, sweet dessert bar made from flour, brown sugar, butter, eggs, baking powder, and vanilla. They may also contain walnuts or pecans. These recipes contain mashed bananas, pecans and espresso beans.

BANANA BLONDIES 1/2 cup butter, melted and if desired browned 1 cup light brown sugar 1 egg 1 1/2 tsp. vanilla 1/4 tsp. salt 1 cup flour 1/2 cup mashed banana (1 medium banana) Brown Sugar Frosting 1/4 cup butter 1/2 cup light brown sugar 2 Tbsp. milk 1 cup powdered sugar Preheat oven to 350 . Line an 8x8 baking dish with foil and spray with cooking spray. Set aside.

In bowl of stand mixer combine melted (or browned) butter and sugar. Mix until combined.

Add in egg and vanilla and continue mixing until incorporated. Stir in salt, flour and banana until batter is smooth and even. Spread in prepared pan. Bake for 25-30 minutes until center is set. Transfer pan to wire rack to cool. Frost the blondies when they are mostly cooled.

Brown Sugar Frosting - In a medium saucepan melt butter. Add brown sugar and milk and stir until mixture comes to just a boil. Remove from heat, allow to cool for 5 minutes. Stir in powdered sugar with a whisk. Spread on top of blondies and allow frosting to set and blondies to cool completely before cutting into squares.

WHOLE GRAIN BLONDIES WITH PECANS AND ESPRESSO BEANS 8 Tbsp. unsalted butter 1 cup packed light brown sugar 1 1/2 cups white whole-wheat flour or all- purpose flour 1 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. salt 2 large eggs, lightly beaten 2 Tbsp. vanilla extract 3/4 cup chopped hazelnuts

3/4 cup chopped espresso beans Preheat oven to 350. Line a 9-by-13-inch baking pan with parchment paper or foil, allowing it to slightly overhang opposite edges. Coat with cooking spray. Melt butter in a large saucepan over medium heat. Cook, swirling often, until fragrant and starting to brown, 4 to 5 minutes.

Remove from the heat. Whisk in brown sugar; let cool for 15 minutes. Meanwhile, whisk flour, baking powder and salt in a medium bowl. Whisk eggs and vanilla into the cooled butter mixture until well combined. Add the flour mixture in two additions, gently folding until just combined.

Reserve 2 tablespoons each hazelnuts and chopped espresso beans; fold the remaining hazelnuts and chopped espresso beans into the batter. Evenly spread the batter into the prepared pan. Sprinkle the reserved hazelnuts and chopped espresso beans. Bake the blondies until light brown around the edges, 18 to 22 minutes. They will appear slightly underbaked in the center; but will firm up as they cool. Let cool completely in the pan on a wire rack, about 2 hours. To cut, grab the overhanging parchment or foil and transfer the whole batch to a cutting board, then cut into 24 bars. I drizzled the blondies with melted dark chocolate once they were cooled.

“I’m taking Dad to the emergency room in Creston.”

Those were the words Margaret Venteicher heard one winter afternoon.

Linus Venteicher is a very active man. He continues the tradition of running a family farm south of Corning. It was a typical Thursday afternoon and Linus was at his son Patrick’s house to help with running calves when suddenly his arm got caught and he found himself in intense pain. Margaret, Linus’s wife, received a call from Patrick informing her that he planned to drive Linus to the Emergency Department at Greater Regional Medical Center. Upon arrival, the ER team evaluated his arm, wrapped it securely and treated his pain. They also arranged an early morning appointment the next day with Dr. Ralston in the Greater Regional Orthopaedics Department.

When Margaret and Linus arrived for the appointment with Dr. Ralston they were unsure what to expect. They were relieved when they met Dr. Ralston. He spoke in understandable terms and gave them options.

“We could choose to have surgery or to try another type of treatment,” Margaret said. “The choice was up to us.” Linus chose the alternative to surgery and was able to have a procedure performed in the clinic at the time of the appointment. The procedure was very quick. He described having nearly 75% of his pain relieved immediately upon completion of the in office procedure. “But that wasn’t the best part,” Margaret laughed. “The best part was when Dr. Ralston asked me if I was ok. He was so kind to think not just of the patient, but of me too.

It became a joke between me and Linus.”

The Venteicher’s left the clinic with Linus wearing a soft cast on his arm with instructions to return for follow up appointments. “When we walked out that day, Linus said he would give Dr. Ralston an A+ rating.

You have to understand this is not a man who is fond of doctors.”

Returning for follow up visits they report it was pleasing to get to know the staff and they were very glad they could receive orthopaedic care close to home. Linus stated, “All the staff was wonderful to work with. I would recommend Dr. Ralston to anyone. Creston can be very grateful for having him on staff.”

Linus’s arm healed and he resumed farming activities in time to plant and has continued to be active ever since. Margaret said, “It was just one of those things.

But it happened, and I think because he had such great care he got better quickly.

He’s ready to go combine beans this afternoon!”

“It’s just an extremely easy way to put money back for Christmas,” said Janel Schaefer, a receptionist at First National Bank in Creston who has been using its Christmas account program for at least 20 years. “You get your funds early enough; you can just kind of plan accordingly.

You know you’re going to get your check in October.”

Schaefer said she uses her FNB Christmas account to save not only for Christmas shopping but also her first-of-the-year bills. She said the automatic payment option makes it an easy way to save.

“It’s kind of like a second savings account in a way,” she said. “You just don’t really miss (the money).”

Four of Creston’s six banks and credit unions offer Christmas accounts.

users can enter the program year-round at most banks.

In FNB’s Christmas account, users make either automatic payments or use a “coupon book” to pay at their own speed throughout the year. Users pay at least $1 per week for 49 weeks, then the bank makes the 50th payment.

Trisha Riley, head customer service representative at Iowa State Savings Bank, said ISSB’s Christmas account users faithfully use the program year after year.

ISSB’s program begins November 1, with enrollment in the program open through March 31. Users set up automatic transfers from another account or payroll through the third week in October, at which time the amount is transferred back to the user. The account maximum is $10,000.

Instead of the bank providing the final payment, these accounts gather interest, which Riley said is higher than a normal savings account.

But despite the boon of a higher interest, Riley said the feedback she hears most is how easy it is to save.

“It’s a way for people to set aside money each week without really realizing that they’re setting it away,” she said.

the mood A well-decorated house not only creates a welcoming feel for visitors, but really sets the mood for the holiday season.

That said, these Crestonians say there are no specific rules in home decorating.

Deb Veitz of Creston mostly decorates her house on Seneca Street with pumpkins and scarecrows during the fall. In doing so, she can take care of two holidays. After Halloween, she tweaks her outside display so it can be enjoyed through Thanksgiving.

Her husband Gary lends his help occasionally.

“He’s my gaudy-meter,” Veitz said. “He tells me when I’ve went too far with my decorating.”

Veitz said she has five totes of decorations and adds pieces every year when going on “girls trips” to craft shows in southwest Iowa with her mother-in-law, daughter-in-law and granddaughter.

Kathy Ralston of Creston said there’s only one rule in decorating: It should always be fun, never stressful. For those who don’t currently decorate, Ralston recommends starting simple by purchasing a wreath for the front door.

“That will set the stage, and then you can add a piece or two each year,” Ralston said.

Ralston said The Old Market, Kelly’s Flowers and Java J’s are great places to shop for decorations locally, but she reminds decorators the pieces don’t have to be purchased. Ralston likes to bring nature inside for her decorating. One year, her children picked pine cones from the yard and crafted them into a Christmas decoration.

Connie Rhine of Creston does decorate in the fall, but said Christmas is her big love.

This Christmas, big green wreaths with red bows will adorn her Cottonwood home and candles will illuminate the windows. Meanwhile, the inside of her home will be decorated with Christmas antiques. Rhine said she’s eclectic in her decorating.

Four Crestonians give tips for decorating the interior and exterior of your home for the holiday season “My thing is, if you like it, figure out how to use it in your decorating,” Rhine said. “I’m not one to think everything needs to coordinate. I decorate because I enjoy it, and each thing I have is a memory of someone, something or some place.”

One piece that can always be found in her decorating is a string of bells her mother gave her.

“Mom’s decorating was always simple. Me, not so much,” Rhine said. “Those bells she gave me are probably 65 years old. If I saw those bells in a store today, I’d never buy them. But, they mean something to me and they go up every year.”

Most years the bells hang from the neck of an ironing board Santa she made that stands by her garage door welcoming visitors.

Megan Travis of rural Creston said she went “crazier than usual” with her fall decorating this year knowing her daughter Maddie, a senior at Creston High School, wanted to host a homecoming gathering at their farmhouse.

Travis said her decorating starts in the fall and really ramps up the closer it gets to Christmas. One of Travis’ tips is, if you want hay bales in your fall display, place them away from house because outside critters like to nest in those areas. She also noted decorators should not carve pumpkins too early.

“Just know you will only get about a week out of them before they go bad,” Travis said.

As a grandmother of four, Barb Bennett’s specialties range from chicken and noodles to cinnamon rolls to the Rocky Mountain oysters she and her husband, Mick, make together.

But whenever she goes to weddings, get-togethers or community dinners, there’s one dish people just won’t let her come without: her deviled eggs.

Bennett has been known to boil as many as seven dozen eggs — which total 168 once they’re halved and deviled — to take to an event. Her plastic egg carriers, which hold 16 apiece, make a high stack in her storage closet.

Larry Owens, who has had Bennett’s deviled eggs “many, many, many times” over the years at Elks Lodge get-togethers, said they are some of the best he’s ever tasted.

“They’re really good,” he said. “I don’t know if she uses some kind of sweet vinegar in it, or pickle juice.”

Mick Bennett said at some events, Barb’s eggs haven’t even made it to the buffet.

“Some people don’t even know they show up — the cooks eat them,” he said. “They don’t last very long, I’ll tell you that.”

Despite the popularity of her eggs, Bennett said her process is anything but an exact science. She said she can’t remember when she first found it, and she said no written recipe exists.

And she only uses six ingredients.

Bennett said brown eggs have a richer flavor. And their smaller size, she said, is perfect.

“Once you make your filling, they fit really good,” she said. “You’ve only got two bites of an egg instead of getting mushy all over.”

To prepare the eggs, Bennett boils them for three minutes and then leaves them in the warm water for ten minutes. She then cools them using ice cubes. The eggs should end up solid in the middle, but not to the point they have a dark-gray layer around the yolk.

Bennett said she usually makes potato salad whenever she makes deviled eggs. That way, any eggs she accidentally disfigures during the peeling or slicing process can go into the potato salad.

So can any leftover filling.

The ingredients to Bennett’s recipe are few: light Miracle Whip, mustard, sugar and lots of pepper. She said she always uses light Miracle Whip because normal mayonnaise is too heavy.

When she mixes the filling, Bennett doesn’t measure. She dumps, stirs, tastes, dumps some more, and repeats until the consistency and flavor is what she wants. The filling should end up creamy and sweet, but not too messy.

Once she’s put the filling inside the eggs, she sprinkles paprika over the top.

“You just dump the stuff in,” she said. “They never taste the same way twice.”

Bennett said while she’s had several comments that her egg recipe is the best, people don’t often ask for her secrets.

The first secret to Bennett’s recipe: the eggs. Bennett uses only small, brown, farm-fresh eggs. She has purchased eggs from both The Pier, where the eggs come from owner Jerry Abell’s chickens, and from Shear Styling, where the eggs come from

“Nobody’s ever asked for the recipe,” she said. “They’ve always said, ‘Bring the eggs. Bring the eggs.’”

Boil eggs for 3 minutes. Then let sit in warm water for 10 minutes. Cool with ice cubes.

Halve eggs from top to bottom, emptying yolk into bowl. Set egg whites aside.

Mix light Miracle Whip, mustard, sugar and pepper into the yolk. Adjust measurements to taste. Filling should be sweet, smooth and creamy.

Spoon filling into egg whites. Sprinkle with paprika.

Water class at the YMCA improves daily functioning and builds muscle strength, flexibility

On a very early Wednesday morning – before the sun came up – Raquel Linch and her class were already in the pool, ready to begin their workout.

Some tell Linch 6 a.m. is too early to exercise. Others disagree and have attended the early bird aqua class at Southern Prairie YMCA for a decade or longer.

“I like the early hour,” said Dennis Nelson, who has taken the class for more than 12 years. “At my age, I need exercise, and in the water, I can do more than my 75-year-old body can do (on land).”

Linch has been teaching early bird aqua, which is free for YMCA members, for 12 years.

“I consider my class my workout partners, and they’re the reason I get out of bed every Monday, Wednesday, Friday,” said Linch, YMCA welcome center supervisor. “We push each other, and I enjoy seeing the benefits that can come from water exercise.”

On Mondays, the class is typically in the deep end with swim noodles doing different exercises. Wednesdays are often devoted to circuits, which may include the use of water bells. On Fridays, they do flutter kicking or play games like water polo. Linch tries to vary the exercise routines to ensure movement in the three main planes of the body: coronal, sagittal and transverse.

Benefits of the class The main purpose of early bird aqua is to improve everyday functioning and flexibility.

“Maybe it’s not like ‘The Biggest Loser’ where you lose 100 pounds, but it’s about those everyday living skills – like walking farther or moving better.”

Though Bernadette Norton didn’t join early bird aqua with the intent of losing weight, she has lost weight and toned her body.

Norton joined as a means of physical therapy. She has a rare deformity on her spine, has undergone two major spinal surgeries and has had both knees replaced. Since she started attending early bird aqua three years ago, she said she feels 110 percent better.

“If I hadn’t started the class and Raquel hadn’t reduced the workouts for me in the beginning, I wouldn’t have been able to

walk or turn my neck,” Norton said. “Raquel is really good at listening and understanding the problems you have.”

Others who take early bird aqua do so to soothe achy joints and muscles. Dennis Nelson has attended for more than 12 years and said it helps his arthritis.

“The doctor told me it would be helpful for my neuropathy, and the benefits have been huge,” said Brenda Strauss.

Water vs. land exercise Water exercise is great for anyone, but Linch said it is especially helpful for people with achy joints or muscles.

“The water supports 90 percent of your body, so you don’t have that impact on your joints, like land classes do,” Linch said.

“You’re able to do that same cardio workout and get your heart pumping without the aches and pains. The water also helps circulation in your body.”

Dr. Chuck Hoyt said he often recommends water exercise to patients, especially those with arthritic or musculoskeletal conditions or who have undergone certain surgeries, such as knee replacement.

“Basically, it’s mobility without weight bearing, so it’s helping the joints stay limber and building muscle strength without the impact,” Hoyt said. “I support it. The hospital has a therapy water tank that we use a lot, but after they are progressed past that, they go to water exercise at the Y.” Judy Hoakison has had knee replacement surgery and prefers water over land workouts. She has taken early bird aqua for more than 10 years.

A QU A “Anybody who has had knee replacement needs to do a water class,” Hoakison said. “It should be a requirement for physical therapy.”

Group exercise Some prefer working out alone, but Linch said exercising as a group is especially effective because you can hold each other accountable.

“I think you’re more inclined to keep going if you have workout partners rather than just doing something on your own,” she said. “Plus it’s fun. We’re like a family.” KH

The thumps of bowling balls hitting the lanes, then the clatter of pins falling on each other: the sounds of a night of bowling reverberate through Pine Valley Golf and Bowl.

Pine Valley, located at 1407 Highway 34, is home to a slew of men who have reached a perfect 300-pin game on the synthetic wood lanes.

“I’ve only done that once,” said Fred Franklin. “It was exciting.

I was just surprised, I guess.”

Franklin, 65, shares the honor of a perfect bowling game with Dan Fulton, 59, and Ron Pendegraft, 61, all of Creston, as well as others. Franklin bowled his game in 2014 at Plaza Lanes in Des Moines, and he and the others have a sparkling silver ring to prove it.

Franklin, bowling since 1982, is part of a league at Pine Valley. He meets with his league members Tuesday and Thursday nights.

Fulton has reached a perfect 300 game twice, as well as a 700 series, which is a total of scores from three games.

“It was pretty unbelievable. I was shocked,” Fulton said of his first 300. “The second time, I was a little more prepared for it. I knew where I was, and what I had to do, and just tried to keep my emotions under control enough to throw the ball the same as I had the previous nine times, and get the last three.”

Fulton shares the honor of multiple 300 scores since 2007 with Brian Newcomb of Creston and Eric McClure of Afton, who both bowl at Pine Valley as well, and he shares the 700 series honor with seven other men.

Pendegraft is also honored with a perfect 300 game, which he received this year.

“I’ve been bowling a long time. ... I had gotten to the point where I had almost given up on it,” Pendegraft said. “And then, it happens. You don’t really plan on it. Things like that just happen. Then after, you think, ‘Wow, that wasn’t that tough.

Why hadn’t I done that before?’”

Pendegraft has been bowling since he was five years old, and is

now part of a league at Pine Valley, as well as the Creston High School bowling coach.

“Favorite memory ... I guess now it would be watching the kids learn and improve,” Pendegraft said. “We’ve had a pretty successful run of state tournament appearances, to watch the kids go up there and do well.”

Fulton recommends new bowlers who are dedicated to improving their game get their own equipment to maintain consistency.

“Get your own ball and shoes. If you want to work on a consistent game, you gotta have your own equipment,” Fulton said. “You’ll never get a good feel for the ball you’re gonna throw otherwise.”

The synthetic lanes at Pine Valley also play a part in a bowler’s game, according to Pendegraft and Fulton.

“It’s more consistent,” Fulton said. “I don’t mind bowling on regular wooden lanes, but synthetic will help your consistency because it does hold the oil longer, and you don’t have to keep adjusting all the time.”

Pendegraft hopes more people get involved in bowling because “you don’t have to be a typical athlete to be a good bowler.”

“You just have to have the willingness to put the time in and learn,” Pendegraft said. “I would like to see more kids getting involved in bowling. It’s a fun sport.”

Pine Valley is home to synthetic wooden bowling lanes, bar and party room. There are six days of leagues each week consisting of women’s, mixed, scratch, Eagle’s and men’s. Open bowling started Oct. 16, and hours are 8-11 p.m.

“My family got me a Barbie house one year. It was a two-story that had three bedrooms and a kitchen. I learned to sew by making bedding, curtains and rugs for my Barbie house. Even after I was too old to play with my Barbies, I still decorated the interior of the house. Or, my Easy Bake Oven. I learned how to bake with my grandma and used to make a variety of baked items for my grandpa and mom that I gave them when they got home from work.

Those were totally tied.”

“It makes me think of all the wonderful things my husband and children have bought me over the years, but my heart goes back to second grade. My family’s small apartment in a suburb outside of Dallas burned down a couple of days before Christmas ... We lost it all. We were devastated. That night, friends came and gathered us all up, including the fish that miraculously survived, and took us to their home. The next day we had a new house rented and my sister and I had our own rooms! People brought food and bag after bag of toys and books and clothes. The Red Cross wrote us a check and we got to go on a shopping spree of sorts for everything else. But, I will never forget the white cardboard box with a black-and-white picture of a radio on it that a man I had never met handed me at the front door of our new home.

closing thoughts Fall and winter Creston The fall and winter issue of Creston Living not only signals the end of another year, but also the start of the holiday season! This time of the year is the favorite of many people; it brings cooler weather, harvest, changing colors and family gatherings.

Our hope was this issue of Creston Living would not only entertain you, but also give you holiday decorating and recipe ideas along with learning more about the people and events in our community. As always, we welcome any thoughts or ideas about future issues of Creston Living from our readers.

The Holiday to Holiday Extravaganza has also become an annual highlight of the fall and winter holiday season. This year’s event will be held on Monday, October 26 at SWCC. Tickets can be purchased in advance or at the door. The Holiday to Holiday Extravaganza will once again be filled with recipe, decorating, fashion and gift giving ideas during the show and the tradeshow. This year’s show will also include tips on how to include your children in your holiday preparations.
