MANAGER OF THE YEAR Russia urges US to fix ties as it cuts US diplomatic staff MOSCOW (AP) — Russia urged the United States Monday to show “political will” to mend ties even as it ordered sweeping cuts of U.S. embassy personnel unseen since Cold War times. President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said it will take time for the U.S. to recover from what he called “political schizophrenia,” but added that Russia remains interested in constructive cooperation with the U.S. “We are interested in a

steady development of our ties and are sorry to note that we are still far from that,” he said. Peskov’s statement followed Sunday’s televised comments by Putin, who said the U.S. would have to cut 755 of its embassy and consulate staff in Russia, a massive reduction he described as a response to new U.S. sanctions. When Taco John’s of Iowa told Tammy Smith they were nominating her for Taco John’s International’s manager of the year award, she was honored they had thought of her. But, with Taco John’s International operating nearly 400 restaurants in 24 states, Smith never imagined she’d actually win the award. So when she heard her name called at the biannual

National Managers’ Conference July 10 in Minnesota, Smith was shocked. “It was nice they even thought of me,” Smith said. “We went to Minnesota, a big conference up there. That’s where they do it at. When they announced it, I was pretty dumbfounded. It’s been nice.” Taco John’s of Iowa owns 24 Taco John’s restaurants in central Iowa and selected two managers to nominate for the award – one of which was Smith. Smith, 55, was one of three Taco John’s managers to win the manager of the year award during the July conference. “For me, I’m proud for Taco John’s of Iowa that we won,” Smith said. “Immediately when I won, I went back to my room and I let

people know that we won. It isn’t just me. It’s everybody in this store that makes something like that happen. You have to be doing everything right. There’s no way I could come in and do it myself.”
