Beginners and experts alike will be pushed to increase their levels of fitness and strength through the Southern Prairie YMCA boot camp challenge.

“We do it to get together and have fun but work hard – work on building cardiovascular strength and endurance and muscular strength and endurance at the same time,” said Dana Dodge, the

YMCA personal trainer who teaches the boot camp. “We really emphasize camaraderie, a group exercise experience and building friendships.”

The class, which is held most summers, will be 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays from July 5 to July 28 at the soccer field across from Creston Middle School. If there is rain or bad weather, the location will be switched to the YMCA. There will likely be no class July 25 due to RAGBRAI. “It’s a really good opportunity, especially for members because it’s free for them this year and $60 for non-members,” said Emi O’Neall, Y M C A sports and healthy living coordinator.

Stocks, pound fall again due to UK vote uncertainty U.S. stocks fell sharply in early trading Monday following another slide in European markets as investors grappled with the fallout of Britain’s vote to leave the European Union.

The British pound, which last week plunged to its lowest level since 1985, continued to fall as traders expected the British economy would take a hit.

The Dow Jones industrial average lost 234 points, or 1.4 percent, to 17,165 as of 10:05 a.m. Eastern Time.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index slid 29 points, or 1.5

percent, to 2,007. The Nasdaq composite fell 76 points, or 1.6 percent, to 4,631.

The latest decline followed the market’s plunge on Friday, when the Dow and S&P 500 clocked their biggest losses since August, and the Nasdaq notched its worst day since August 2011. Despite the losses, the market is still well above the lows it reached in February, when the S&P 500 closed as low as 1,829.

Kay was born June 18, 1938, on a farm in rural Creston. In 1963, she moved to Valparaiso, Indiana, with her husband Rich Manatrey and three chil-

dren, Monty, Kristin and Mark. In 1972, she entered the work force for the first time in her life. Kay and colleagues went on to establish Regional Appraisal Services in 1983. Kay continued her work as a real estate appraiser into the 1990s.

In 1992, she married Dick Paxton. Dick and Kay spent many years traveling between Big Sky, Montana and Clearwater, Florida.

Merle E. Schaefer was born May 16, 1927, in Richland Township in Adair County, the son of Ferdinand Edwin and Sarah Ann (Stone) Schaefer. Merle attended school in Rich-

land and graduated from Richland High School in 1945. In December of 1945, he enlisted in the United States Army where he served for two years. On May 20, 1948, he was united in marriage to Ilah Sackett. To this union three daughters were born, Elaine, Janet and Mary Kay. They farmed northeast of Greenfield on the Sackett family farm until they moved into Greenfield in 1979.  Merle later married Jean Queck and they lived in Creston until moving to Greenfield in 2009. He loved woodworking, flowers, hunting and fishing, tinkering with small engines and riding his motorcycle. After retiring from farming he was a hail ad-

Lois M. (Falconer) Hardisty, daughter of Ida A. (Reichardt) Falconer and Paul T. Falconer, was born on May 24, 1927, in rural Massena. She was educated in Corning schools and graduated with the class of 1944.

On Oct. 14, 1945, Lois married Russell Edward Hardisty in Kent. Together they owned and operated Scranton Auto Parts from 1962 to 1965. In 1965, they

moved to Afton and owned and operated the Afton Auto Parts until 1990. Lois also worked at First Federal Savings and Loan in Creston at various times from 1944 to 1984 for a total of 25 years.

Lois was a member of Afton United Methodist Church.

Lois is survived by her sons, Randy (Shelley) Hardisty of Afton and Terry (Kim) Hardisty of Lorimor; daughter Ruth (Lynn) White of Afton; sister Alice Bowers of Creston; grandsons, Luke (Casey) White, Ryan (Erin) Hardisty, Drew (Suzy) Hardisty, Clayton White (Rachelle Allen) and Nathan (Karen) Hardisty;

granddaughters, Taylor (Alex) Pettit and Katelin Hardisty; great-grandchildren, Halle White, Addison White, Trent Hardisty and Hannah Hardisty; sisters-in-law, Anna Ruth Hardisty of Corning, Wilma Peterson of Corning, Wanda (Wayne) Victor of Prescott and Donna Adams of Omaha; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

The Shanghai Composite Index gained 1.2 percent, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng shed 0.2 percent. Seoul’s Kospi rose 0.1 percent.

Bond prices rose. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 1.48 percent from 1.56 late Friday.

In currency markets, the euro weakened to $1.1006 from $1.1121 in Friday’s trading, while the yen fell to 101.64 from 102.24. The British pound slid to $1.3218 from $1.3638, despite the British Treasury’s reassurances that the economy was strong enough to withstand the uncertainty.

In energy futures trading, benchmark U.S. crude was down $1.02, or 2.1 percent, at $46.62 a barrel in New York.

Brent crude, used to price international oils, was down 81 cents, or 1.7 percent, at $47.60 in London.

According to a Creston Police report, a traffic stop was conducted on a vehicle driven by Case Friday in Creston. Case had an active warrant in Union County and was taken into custody. Case had a baggie in his shoe containing a crystalline substance which was tested with a NARTEC methamphetamine test ampule and came back positive.

CEDAR RAPIDS — Another two-game invitational Saturday featured two losses for Creston Panthers softball in Cedar Rapids.

Creston fell 7-0 to Davenport West and 8-3 to Dubuque Hempstead.

“You never want to lose, but you kind of know going in when you’re playing good people like that your margin of error becomes less,” Creston coach Mike McCabe said.

Game one

Just three hits were all the Panthers managed in an opening 7-0 defeat at the hands of Davenport West.

Creston had its best chance to get on the board in the first inning when Josie Sickels doubled to the gap in right-center and a Shelby Palser bunt hit resulted in runners being on second and third with no outs. Unfortunately for the Panthers, Taylor Briley, Alli Thomsen and Lexie Little followed in order with strikeouts.

“Probably the biggest lesson that came out of that game was that right there,” McCabe said. “That you have got to take advantage of chances like that against really good people.”

West starter Lexi Monty went four innings in the circle and struck out seven Panther batters.

“The Monty girl was excellent. She struck out six of the first eight batters she faced against us,” McCabe said.

Thomsen was the lone other player to get a hit in the game for Creston.

Cali Foglesong took the loss in three and one third innings of work, as she allowed 10 hits, seven runs, six earned and walked two. Briley came on in relief of Foglesong with an out in the fourth, did not give up a run and struck out one over the next inning and a third of work.

Game two

Creston put up a stronger effort against Dubuque Hempstead in its second game of the day.

After Briley gave up a run in the second and two in the third, the Pan-

thers rallied in their turns at the plate in the third.

Palser had an RBI-single and Thomsen knocked a two-RBI single that scored Palser Thomsen and Briley.

That was it for the Creston scoring however, as Hempstead picked up four runs with the help of six singles to break the game open.

Saige Rice was the lone Panther to get two hits on Saturday, and she did so with a 2-for-2 performance with a double in the latter game.

Briley took the loss, as she allowed 16 hits, eight runs, struck out two and walked no one.

“They (Briley and Foglesong) weren’t doing anything in particular to struggle, just good-hitting ball clubs (West and Hempstead),” McCabe said. “Really all it was there.

Found ourselves maybe getting into some bad counts against good hit-

ters and that’s not going to add up to good results.”

Creston, now 18-10, travels to Red Oak for a Tuesday showdown.

“It’s just a matter of showing up and playing the way we’re capable. Red Oak is certainly much-improved,” McCabe said.

Heading into day two of the 49th annual Crestmoor Best Ball Tournament, Chad Dryden and T.J. Redding had a little ground to make up.

They entered the second 18 two shots behind day one leaders Ryan McKim and Chuck Kuntz, with McKim and Kuntz having carded a 65 on day one.

Redding and Dryden took advantage of a near perfect afternoon featuring warm temperatures and mild wind to earn a come-from-behind win.

Raiderettes can’t quite pull out home win

MT. AYR —Mount Ayr kept a powerful Interstate 35 squad within its grasp for five innings of Friday’s Pride of Iowa Conference softball contest.

The Raiderettes couldn’t quite find the big hit against Roadrunners ace Carlyn Stanley as Interstate 35 went on to pull out a 6-0 win.

Mount Ayr had three hits in the first three innings, including a pair of singles in the first.

“I’m pretty happy with it,” said Mount Ayr coach Brett Ruggles. “She’s a pretty good pitcher, but we hit her hard. We put the ball in play.

If we can do that, we can create some errors.”

Stanley though showcased how effective she can be in the later innings, not allowing a hit after the fourth inning. She struck out 10 and walked none.

“We just couldn’t string our hits together,” Ruggles said.

The Roadrunners struck early, scoring two in the first.

Slye Richardson and Shai Major each drove in a run with a base hit.

Raiderettes pitcher Sam Schaefer settled in after the first, not allowing a run in the three remaining innings she worked.

“Sam Schafer doesn’t have dominant speed, but she moves the ball so well that they can’t square you up every single time,” Ruggles said. “She did a nice job.

We kept their hitters off balance.”

While the deficit wasn’t that large, against a pitcher like Stanley it seemed much larger.

“I was telling the girls that it feels like we’re down by four or five,” Ruggles saidk.

“We were only down two.”

Interstate 35 struck for three in the sixth. Major drove in a run iwth a single.

Keann Williamsen drove in a pair with a single.

The Roadrunners added a run in the seventh.

Nodaway Valley takes two, Bulldogs fall twice

GREENFIELD — Orient-Macksburg and Nodaway Valley played in the latter’s annual Nodaway Valley Softball Classic on Sunday and played a total of five games.

Van Meter worked its way through the field to win the tournament in dominant fashion and defeated Logan-Magnolia 10-0 to win the championship, while the Bulldogs and Wolverines both played a slate of games.

The Bulldogs fell at the hands of Van Meter 13-0 and Adair-Casey 16-3.

“I did tell my team, some of these teams out here that are playing right now have been playing together since they were eighth, graders and ninth graders and we’re just at the beginning stage of that,” Orient-Macksburg coach Mike Cooley said.

Nodaway Valley won its opener 16-3 over Adair-Casey and then lost 19-8 in four innings to Van Meter.

“Our kids played pretty well, we had a good day,” Nodaway Valley coach Ray Stewart said.

Orient-Macksburg The Bulldogs ran into a buzzsaw in an opening 13-0 loss to eventual tournament champs Van Meter.

The second game proved to be a better showing for Orient-Macksburg.

The Bulldogs first three batters reached base. Cameo Walker hit a two-RBI single up the middle to score Cortney Gross and Behle Ott to even the game in the bottom of the first. A third run from Kaela Eslinger came when she got caught in a run down and Adair-Casey catcher Emma Ferguson overthrew third base.

The Bombers scored a run in the third before a thunder delay kicked in.

Orient-Macksburg sur-

rendered another run in the fourth, and the Bulldogs had collected just one out.

The Bombers’ Cami Howell launched a screamer at Bulldogs second baseman Haylee Gardner, who caught the ball and threw on to first to double off the runner for an inning-ending double play.

After striking out three times in the bottom of the fourth, Orient-Macksburg lost the tight game and gave up seven runs in the fifth and five in the sixth.

“The girls are tired. We played seven games in five days. They’re young and they’re not used to that yet,” Cooley said. “All in all, we played well for about four or five innings (against Adair-Casey) and then we ran out of gas.”

Gross, Eslinger, Sammi Long, Hayli Shinn and Ashlyn Kralik all had a hit for the Bulldogs.

Eslinger took the loss for the Bulldogs in the circle and pitched six innings. She struck out four in the loss.

Even when the young Bulldogs looked frazzled at points in the fifth and sixth, Cooley attempted to compose his team.

“It’s really hard I think for this group to keep going when the going gets tough,” Cooley said. They don’t understand that we need to let go of the last play. That’s what the great players do.”

Orient-Macksburg will play CAM at home on Tuesday, which will act as a preview for its tournament opener against CAM once more on July 5. The Bulldogs will play Mount Ayr at the Mount Ayr Softball Classic on Wednesday, as well as Lenox and Murray as part of the same event on Saturday, July 2.

Nodaway Valley Game one The Wolverines made quick work of Adair-Casey in their first game of the day.

Paige McElfish gave up three runs and three hits in seven innings of work in the circle. She struck out 11 Bombers in the win. She also went 1-for-4 with a homer, a walk and three runs scored.

Keeley Shantz led the way for the Wolverines as she scored four runs, with all of them coming in each of the game’s last four innings. She went 3-for-5.

Jessica Nelson hit 2-for5 with a double and a run scored. Addie Lamb went 2-for-4 with three runs scored.

Nodaway Valley pushed across six runs in the game’s final frame and all of its runs came after the third inning.

Game two Van Meter jumped all over Wolverine pitching, but especially so in the first.

The Bullldogs, pushed across nine runs against the host squad in the first.

After holding Van Meter scoreless in the second, Nodaway Valley bashed its way to eight in the third. A McElfish double aided by a persistent win scored two for the Wolverines and a Brianna Welsch two-run home run was one of the highlights of the day for the hosts.

Leading 9-8 going into the third, the Bulldogs tacked on five more runs before McElfish came in to replace freshman pitcher Kate Jensen. She picked up three straight outs.

The Wolverines mustered no runs in the fourth and five more Bulldogs runs led to the game ending in the fourth with a final score of 19-8.

“I was happy with the way our kids played against Van Meter,” Stewart said.

Game three Bizarre circumstances ended Nodaway Valley’s third game of the day, but it did earn a 5-0, three-inning win over Tri-Center.

Nodaway Valley scored two runs in the second inning thanks to a Jessica Nelson run on a passed ball and a Sami Harris RBI-single.

“That little squirt can really hit the ball sometimes,” Stewart said. “She has really stepped up and hit the ball for us.”

A Welsch sacrifice fly scored McKynli Newbury right before things got weird.

Sami Harris came up to the plate with two runners on.

She hit a ball off her foot and the ball landed fair and play continued before the umps convened to call it a foul ball. Tri-Center coach Lynn Christiansen argued vehemently before being sent back to the dugout.

After Harris singled (with an outfield error) to score two runs, Christiansen came out of the dugout to speak with the home plate umpire and was ejected from the game. The coach lost his cool and took off after field umpire John Parsons, but he had already been disqualified from the game.

Christiansen, without another coach on site, pulled his team from the game to end it in three innings. It was a bizarre and disappointing end of the day for the Trojans.

The Wolverines meanwhile, won their second game of the day. The team has had its fair share of ups and downs, but has a slate of home games awaiting it for the end of the regular season, and can build momentum as tournament play nears.

“I kept thinking we have a pretty good ball club, but then a couple times things have happened when I think, well, maybe we aren’t such a good ball club,” Stewart said.

“I’m just kind of up in the air right now about how I feel about the tournament (state tournament).”

recently signed a proclamation encouraging all Iowans to join in the historic Iowa 99-county Bible-reading marathon to take place simultaneously in front of all 100 courthouses, beginning 8 a.m. Thursday and ending 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

The entire state of Iowa will be united to read the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. Furthermore, Branstad is encouraging all individuals and families in Iowa to read through the Bible on a daily basis each year until the Lord comes.

Community volunteers are needed to help read through the Bible at Union County Courthouse over the course of these four days in 15-minute increments. A canopy tent, podium and Bible will be on site for the readers, along with a team captain who will provide any needed assistance.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – June is National Safety Month and in the Midwest, we all should be looking ahead with an eye toward possible tornados, storms, floods and unfortunately other possible unknowns that could create a nightmare in just a few minutes. So do you have a plan? The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has created a phone application to help you and your family survive in the event of an emergency.

The FEMA app contains preparedness information for different types of disasters, an interactive checklist for emergency kits, a section to plan emergency meeting locations, information on how to stay safe and recover after a disaster and general ways the public can get involved before and after a disaster.

The agency was also looking at ways to use social media to have conversations with communities impacted by disasters. A major new feature not only lets you receive information but allows users to submit disaster-related images to be publicly posted on the FEMA website.

The ability to upload pictures and receive data in almost-real time will be useful not only to the public, but also to first responders.

“The public is a resource and often times the initial and first reports we get are people putting up information, from tweets, from Flickr,” said Beth Freeman, FEMA Region VII administrator.
