Parade of Homes celebration scheduled

The saying goes: “Life’s a parade.” And, Creston will be hosting a parade with a focus on an important part of life: the home.

Southwest Iowa Homebuilders Alliance is hosting the organization’s annual Parade of Homes Saturday. The event will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with seven homes on the

parade route.

“The Parade of Homes is the one big thing that we do per year here at the Southwest Iowa Homebuilders Alliance,” said Paul Lorenz, treasurer of Southwest Iowa Homebuilders Alliance. “It’s where the homebuilders get to show off recent homes built, and people can get ideas either for new home construction down the road or, perhaps, improvements.”

Admission is free.

Homes Businesses or public entities, such as Southwestern Community College or Winterstien Construction, that are members of the alliance can show a home the employees or students built during the parade. Other members can set up booths within the homes with more information about the alliance, as well as information about the business.

Nolte, Cornman & Johnson released an audit report on Prescott Community School District.

The district’s revenues totaled $1,164,481 for the year ended June 30, 2013, a 4.17 percent decrease from the prior year. Revenues included $627,946 in local tax, charges for service of $57,201, operating grants, contributions and restricted interest of $164,009, unrestricted state grants of $302,972, unrestricted interest of $2,445 and other general revenues of $9,908.

Expenses for district operations totaled $1,270,880, a 34.96 percent decrease from the prior year.

Expenses included $518,339 for regular instruction, $245,259 for special instruction and $130,499 for other instruction.

A copy of the audit report is available for review in the district secretary’s office, office of the auditor of state, and on the auditor of state’s website at http:// auditor.iowa.gov/reports/ index.html.

Final Veishea meeting will be in closed session The task force plans to present a final report to ISU President Steven Leath by June 30 ■

AMES (MCT) — The Veishea task force will assemble for the final time tonight at a meeting that will be held behind closed doors following a brief progress report and comment period that is open to the public.

By June 30, the task force plans to present a final report to Iowa State University President Steven Leath on its recommendations for the future of Veishea.

Already, it has voted to recommend discontinuing the celebration in its current form but still holding a university-wide event under a different name.

Creston High School Hall of Fame was established. Principal Todd Wolverton proposed the idea to Creston School Board and it was approved. The purpose of the hall of fame is to honor and recognize those

Route Each home is numbered from one to seven, but there is no set starting point for the parade.

“It’s on your own, and you can start from any point,” Lorenz said.

Each home will have a radio unit to promote the event. The route will be in the Creston News Advertiser’s Parade of Homes insert today.

Homes are chosen by members of the alliance.

“We have monthly meetings, and the meeting leading up to the parade, that’s when we make it official which homes are in the show,” Lorenz said. “We don’t have any certain restrictions aside from the fact that you need to be a member.”

Giveaway Southwest Iowa Homebuilders Alliance will host a drawing during the parade for $500 in Builder Bucks.

Builder Bucks can be spent at any business that is an alliance member.

“Be sure to sign up for Builder Bucks. You can do

one slip at each home, so the more homes you visit, you can increase your chances of winning,” Lorenz said.

Lorenz also said the alliance offers a $500 scholarship to SWCC’s building trades program.

“We’re kind of proud of that. We’ve done that every year for over 20 years. I know the college is proud of that,” Lorenz said.

Southwest Iowa Homebuilders Alliance is also responsible for various other community projects, such as a gazebo at Greater Regional Medical Center.

by S.A. Brewster.

After being in partnership with Ed C. Russell, owner and editor of The Democrat, Brewster leased an old two-story building, and, in May 1879, opened a job printing business that would eventually become the Creston News Advertiser.

Pop music star Michael Jackson died June 25 of a heart attack at age 50.

During his career, he produced more than five dozen Top 40 hits. Jackson’s influence was wide-ranging, setting standards in music, dance, video and fashion.

It will then incorporate those recommendations into its final deliberations as it discusses draft language for the report to Leath.

“Task force meetings are not required to be open under the law, and draft documents are exempt from public records law,” said ISU spokeswoman Annette Hacker, a non-voting member of the task force.

The task force’s chairman, ISU Senior Vice President for Student Affairs Tom Hill, said the decision to meet in closed session was made so its members could feel more comfortable presenting any final

ideas that might not be fully formulated and could be misconstrued by the public.

“I really would like to have an opportunity for members of the task force to really get in there and put everything out on the line, and not have to walk away thinking that there’s something they should have or could have said but didn’t for a variety of reasons,” Hill said.

Hacker said she guessed the initial part of the meeting that is open to the public would last roughly 20 minutes.

The meeting will be at 6 p.m. in the Memorial Union’s Pioneer Room.

The task force was convened by Leath after a late night Campustown disturbance April 8 that left an ISU student seriously injured when he was hit by a felled light post.

At a press conference he convened the following afternoon, Leath said he was assembling the task force to make a recommendation on whether future events would “either be a total reconstitution and refocus on what Veishea used to be, or (if) it won’t be” at all.

Despite missing a tentative deadline to have a draft of the final report completed last week, the task force remains on track to submit a final report to Leath by the end of the month, according to Hill.

Hill said tonight’s plan is for task force members to walk away from the meeting with the understanding that a final draft is “substantially complete with only minor adjustments needed to be made,” such as editing.

“I think we’re in a good position right now, and I have every reason to believe that (tonight’s) meeting will be fruitful,” he said.

University of Iowa officials announced an $87 million upgrade for Kinnick Stadium featuring luxury seats, suites and a new press box. A plaza was also added outside of the stadium to be the main entry gate.

Afton celebrated its 150th anniversary with a parade, entertainment and a variety of activities throughout the two-day event. Between 2,500 and 2,800 guests were in attendance. “Greeting and meeting” seemed to be the main attraction.

OPINION The year’s almost half over

It seems like it was just yesterday I was freezing my toes off and now it is about ready to turn into July. The cold, cold winter turned into a nice wet spring.

Now we get all the mosquitos and humidity that go with the wet and hot of summer. That’s the good thing about Iowa, you get a change of seasons whether you like it or not.

Fourth of July We’re about a week away from the Fourth of July. Creston will have its usual full day or two of activities, complete with parade and a nice fireworks show to end the evening. We will have a complete rundown of all the festivities in the CNA next week.

The festivities start off with the 5K run/walk and half marathon on July 3. It is the first year for the event and looks like it should be a

fun event if you like to run or walk.

Your Fourth of July barbecue will cost a bit more this year if you are planning on beef or pork on your holiday menu. Both meats have hit all time highs this past week. Lucky the interest rates are low...you might have to take out a small loan to buy a package of steaks!

Party in the Park The Creston Party in the Park last Saturday was a big success. It was a good turnout and a nice evening was had by all. I always work in the back taking care of all the

musicians “wants.” This year was the easiest year ever.

Of the dozen musicians, only a couple of them even drank. I served more water and ice tea than anything. The gang really enjoyed the pulled pork. I could barely keep up with all the sandwich making. They loved Crestonians Chris Lane’s pork and Aaron Chapman’s BBQ sauce.

I even gave the 7 Bridges band the leftover BBQ sauce to take back to Nashville with them.

Water everywhere I made a trip east to Dubuque last week for a meeting. Boy did I hit some big storms. The thunder, lightning and rain went full speed all night long as I stayed there. I went down by the Mississippi River and it was out of its banks and the current looked to be going about 50 mph.

I think the rains from the past four weeks got Iowa out of its drought stage. Now let’s just hope the rain gods don’t give up on the rest of the summer and give us a little rain now and then to keep the crops moving in the right direction.

Football tickets I read where the “Big House” in Michigan may not be a sell out this year due to a number of changes — price of the student ticket being a big one. The student body at Michigan is looking to drop from 20,000 per game down to 13,000 per game.

The stadium has been sold out since 1971.

Nebraska is in the same boat with the athletic department advertising for season ticket buyers for first time in more than 50 years.

The high cost of tickets and the advent of large high definition television has made it much easier to stay at home on game days. Plus with the television networks dictating when the games will be televised, it has been harder for the fans to plan for games.

There are a lot of games that the time is not announced until the Sunday before the Saturday game.

Nebraska even has an 8 p.m. game this year that won’t get done until about midnight or after. What’s up with that! College football better like the TV money, because it is going to put a lot of empty seats in stadiums over the next few years.

The FAA announced Tuesday it will not allow Amazon to send airborne drones to deliver packages of less than five pounds to your front door. The drones would fly to your door, drop off your package, then fly off. It was all part of an orchestrated attempt to drive your dog crazy.

The struggles of Hillary Clinton We haven’t learned much new about Hillary Clinton on her book tour except that she mistakes herself for a version of Norma Rae. First, during an interview in her well-appointed Washington, D.C., home with ABC News anchor Diane Sawyer, she said she and Bill left the White House “dead broke,” although they always made better potential subjects for “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous” than “Let Us Now Praise Famous Men.” Next, in an interview with The Guardian, she seemed to suggest that she and Bill aren’t among the “truly well off,” and said that no one could possibly resent their wealth since they earned it “through dint of hard work.”

And so they did — the hard work of building political careers for themselves, and then, when the time came, profiting massively off them. As Hillary put it in her walkback of the “dead broke” remark, she and Bill had different “phases” in their lives. One phase involved climbing into the White House and incurring stupendous legal bills in fending off various scandals. The other has involved getting showered with money.

Most people can’t understand the nature of the hard work with which the Clintons are constantly building their fortune.

They don’t know what it’s like to write a calculatedly tedious book for an almost $14 million advance.

They don’t know what it’s like to get up every morning and take a private jet to an event where ador-

ing fans line up for a book-signing (only one copy per person, and no posed photographs, please).

They don’t know what it’s like to run from speech to speech, collecting as much as $200,000 per gig.

They don’t know what it’s like to be married to a man who earns $700,000 for one speech in Nigeria.

They don’t know what it’s like to have a daughter who gets paid $600,000 by NBC News for a not particularly taxing job.

They don’t know what it’s like to be so connected that even your hangers-on can get rich.

This is the life of labor the Clintons have chosen, and if it is arduous, it has its rewards. Between 2000 and 2008, the couple made roughly $110 million in income.

They own two homes, one valued at $5 million in Washington, and another valued at $1.8 million in New York state. Last summer, they rented an $11 million mansion in the Hamptons. Such is their wealth that they are using complicated tax maneuvers to limit their exposure to the estate tax.

No one will necessarily hold this bonanza against Hillary, unless she minimizes it in a tone-deaf attempt to make herself out as an average working gal, as she has during the past couple of weeks. The coun-

try has a long history of successful wealthy Democratic politicians (FDR, JFK), but a more recent example of an unsuccessful wealthy Democratic politician (John Kerry), who suffered from the perception that he was an out-of-touch elitist.

Hillary’s expressed cluelessness about how truly well off she is, and why, risks putting her in the Kerry category. As Daniel Drezner of The Washington Post points out, her attitude surely reflects class divisions within the top 1 percent. If you hang out with celebrities and billionaires long enough, you will feel positively middle class even as you pull down millions of dollars per year.

Her cash windfall also will make the Democratic war on inequality at least a little more awkward, although she’s no different than other Democratic scourges of inequality who almost always sop up as much money as possible as soon as they’re out of government. For liberals, to paraphrase an old Ronald Reagan quip, fair reward for hard work and talent is when you get rich; a crisis in income inequality is when someone else does.

But Hillary would know nothing about these gradations within the upper stratosphere of wealth.

She’s working too hard just to make ends meet.

Honey, what a mess!

Dear Heloise: The container that holds HONEY LEAKED all over my kitchen-cabinet shelf. The shelf is plastic, and I can’t take it out of the cabinet. How can I clean this mess? — Julie P. in Oregon Start by taking everything off the shelf and any lower shelves. Next, boil some water and pour it over every place on the shelf that has sticky patches of honey. Cover the water and honey with paper towels. Continue to add more boiling water until the towels are completely soaked. Finally, cover the entire area with plastic wrap.

After about 10 or 15 minutes of letting the water and paper towels sit (until the honey is softened), you should be able to remove the paper towels, plastic wrap and honey all at once. No-hitter SAN FRANCISCO — Tim Lincecum’s days of dominance may be in the past. That doesn’t mean he can’t dial up flashes of the Freak he once was -especially against the San Diego Padres.

Lincecum pitched his second no-hitter against the Padres in less than a year, allowing only one runner Wednesday and leading the San Francisco Giants to a 4-0 win.

Local rodeo competitors qualify for nationals Creston High School senior John Gravlin and sophomore Emily Gravlin have earned positions on the Iowa National High School rodeo team July 13-19 in Rock Springs, Wyo. John Gravlin will compete in bareback competition at the 66th annual National High School Finals rodeo (NHSFR) event that will feature more than 1,500 contestants from 42 states, five Canadian provinces and Australia.

Emily Gravlin will compete in barrel racing.

These qualifications are based on performances at the Iowa high school rodeo finals June 6 in Waterloo.

At that event, Riley Weehler of Maloy became the 2014 Iowa champion in calf roping and second

in team roping with partner Payden Dawson of Maryville, Mo. Other state champions include B r e t t Moffett of Osceola in bareback riding, Logan Wood of P r e s c o t t Wood in boys cutting and Tegan Smith of Winterset in saddle bronc.

At the national finals, contestants will be competing for more than $350,000 in college scholarships and the chance to be named an NHSFR national champion.

To earn this title, contestants must finish in the top 20 — based on their combined times/scores in the

first two rounds — to advance to Saturday evening’s final round. National champions will be determined on their three-round combined times/scores.

Again this year, the Saturday championship performance will be televised nationally as a part of the Cinch Highschool Rodeo Tour telecast series on RFD-TV. Live broadcasts of each NHSFR performance will also air online at NHSRATV.com. Performance times are 7 p.m. on July 13, and 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. each day thereafter.

Vandy wins OMAHA, Neb. — The talk at the College World Series was about how few home runs were hit at TD Ameritrade Park.

Well, one was hit Wednesday night -- and the folks in Nashville undoubtedly will be talking about it for a long time.

John Norwood’s tiebreaking homer in the top of the eighth inning carried Vanderbilt to a 3-2 win over Virginia in the third and deciding game of the CWS finals, giving the Commodores their first national championship.

Norwood turned on Nick Howard’s 97 mph fastball and sent it into the left-field bullpen for only the 25th home run hit in the four years the CWS has been played in the cavernous TD Ameritrade Park.

It was Norwood’s third homer of the year, his first since April 19 and Vanderbilt’s first since May 16. It also was only the third home run in 16 CWS games this year and the 22nd in 72 games by the Commodores (51-21).

Mavs trade DALLAS — The Mavericks and the New York Knicks have consummated a six-player trade that sends center Tyson Chandler back to Dallas.

The Mavericks, who immediately made reacquiring Chandler one of their priorities after their firstround playoff exit against San Antonio, completed a trade with the Knicks that was clinched by agreeing to take back the contract of New York’s out-of-favor guard Raymond Felton as well.

The trade cost Dallas two starters -- point guard Jose Calderon and center Samuel Dalembert — along with prized young point guard Shane Larkin.

National junior high rodeo underway in Des Moines DES MOINES — More than 1,100 junior high students are competing this week in the National Junior High Finals Rodeo Championships.

The events include barrel racing, goat tying, team roping and junior bull riding.

More than 20 Iowans are competing with up to 50,000 spectators expected at the Richard O. Jacobson Exhibition Center and the Pioneer Livestock Pavilion at the Iowa State Fairgrounds.

This is the first time the event has been held in Des Moines. It continues with

competition at 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. daily through Saturday.

National champions will be crowned at the 7 p.m. Saturday show. Admission is $15 for adults, $10 for children 5 to 12, and free for 4 and under.

Also, the Western Trade Show will continue 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Saturday at the Bruce L. Rastetter 4-H Exhibits Building and the John Deere Agriculture Building. Cost is free.

Outdoor news REAP Benefits REAP funding safeguards Iowa’s future through conservation education. Floyd County’s Fossil and Prairie Preserve Center and the Lost Island Nature Center in Palo Alto County demonstrate the success of statewide REAP-empowered education efforts. Quality of life for all Iowans is bolstered by recreational opportunities that double as resource conserving activities — allowing future generations to enjoy the same outside wonders.

A steady stream of school busses shuttle fieldtrippers to the Devonian fossil beds of Northeast Iowa’s Rockford Fossil and Prairie Reserve Center that hold a variety of 365-million-year-old fossils. Kids bring egg cartons outfitted with gluedon classification-enabling charts that aid in organization of the many treasures they will surely collect.

The field day begins in the prairie-remnant surrounded $200,000 REAPfunded Fossil Center that opened in 2001, where exhibits help educate students on all parts of the park including fossil, geology, and oceanic history, Iowa’s prairie history, backyard nature, and Winnebago River history as it is the northern border of the 402-acre natural prairie and fossil preserve.

Then the energy-frothed youth get to go as wild as their particular chaperones will allow while exploring a landscape of loose rock hills and cliffs that create the perfect, safe environment for kids to challenge themselves while collecting brachiopods, gastropods, coro-

noids (still alive in today’s oceans), colony corals, horned corals and clams.

The Rockford quarry was originally dug by the Rockford Brick and Tile Company, who discarded fossils due to their disruptive properties of the kiln hardening process. They were after the blue clay beneath the limestone fossil layer, which, because of its insulator properties, was the impetus for talks of turning the quarry into a landfill. A grass roots letter-petitioning process and REAP funding helped actualize what is now enjoyed by more than 5000 annually as a park, where fossils can still be found embedded in the walls of many cuts and washes throughout the quarry.

“As the Naturalist, environmental education is my number one goal — to get people connected with the outdoor environment so they’ll want to go out and enjoy it. It’s really important in my mind, especially now when we’re plugged in so much with technology; just to be able to go out and take a hike is very important,” said Floyd County naturalist Heidi Reams.

She said the fossil park is a great place for grandparents to share with their grandkids, who can wear off quite a little energy exploring and learning.

“I had my 80+ year-old Grandma out here once and she was able to find one —if you can get down to the ground and iden-

tify shapes you are set; you don’t even need tools, they’re just there for the taking,” Reams said.

Restored prairie and trails that connect all the way into Rockford also provide great recreational fun.

“To me, the memory of the these kids’ experience is the most important part,” said Reams, who hopes that those memories will lead to new experiences for future generations.

In northwest Iowa, a REAP grant of $197,897 funded construction of the Lost Island Nature Center in 1992. Located in the Prairie Pothole Region adjacent to 7,000 acres of public land, in the 75-acre Lost Island-Huston Park in Palo Alto County, public programs and demand increases led to a 2005 classroom addition to the Center — paid for by an additional $136,970 REAP grant.

Located on Lost Island Lake and open to the public free of charge, the Lost Island Nature Center’s primary goal is education for all ages, especially students, and features exhibits that include a wetland diorama, raptor and watershed displays, an archaeology display, indoor beehive, an aquarium with native fish, library and a classroom.

In addition to the K-6 distributed Cattails newsletter, a wide array of free public programs is offered throughout the year. Summer Explorers Day Camp and Junior Nationalists serve as special youth programs.

“Palo Alto Co. Naturalist Miriam Patton constantly shares her enthusiasm for nature, providing programs and outdoor ac-

tivities for school children, scouts, 4-H civic groups and the general public,” said County Conservation Board director Mary Barrick.

“REAP played a huge role in the success of Palo Alto County Conservation Board education programs. We are proud that the Lost Island Nature Center was the first building funded by REAP. Field trips, bus tours, canoeing, cross country skiing, fishing derby, prairie hikes and annual events such as the Wings and Wetlands Event, Birdhouse Building Workshop, Halloween Hike, Saturday In The Park all evolve around the Nature Center,” Barrick said. “The Nature Center provides a place for people to come and experience nature first hand and has become the focal point for environmental education in Palo Alto County.

“We believe that the conservation of our natural resources tomorrow depends upon the education of our citizens today.”

In its 25 years, REAP has benefited every county in Iowa by supporting 14,535 projects. REAP has funded these projects with $264 million in state investments, leveraging two to three times the amount in private, local and federal dollars. Somewhere today, cats and dogs are playing together.

Carl Edwards had to fight off a last-lap nip by veteran Jeff Gordon to win at Sonoma Raceway on Sunday. Gordon was so impressed with Edwards’ driving ability that he went to Victory Lane to shake the hand of the winning driver.

And then Edwards let it be known that when he was a little kid watching television at home in Missouri, he was enthralled by Gordon’s skills on the Sonoma road course.

“I’m a fan of this sport, and I grew up watching Jeff Gordon go through those esses (turns) and watching how he drove his car, so to be able to hold him off like that means a lot,” Edwards said.

Oops.

That little bit of innocent nostalgia from Edwards made everybody realize Gordon, now in his 22nd year of service to Hendrick Motorsports in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, is hurtling toward his 43rd birthday in August.

The 20-year-old kid, who gave Dale Earnhardt fits as a rookie in 1993, is now old enough to be the father of a 20-year-old child.

Gordon, who leads the Cup Series points chart, has plenty of stock-car driving ability. He took the age questions in stride, like an old pro.

“Yeah, I’m starting to hear that a lot more where somebody was born when I won my first championship or was watching me as a kid,” Gordon said.

“But I love racing here. I love being competitive and leading the points and having a shot at winning races at 22 years into my Cup career. It doesn’t matter; we’re having fun.”

Gordon doesn’t have much else to prove. He is third all-time in Cup victories behind Hall of Fame drivers Richard Petty and David Pearson, and has won four Cup championships.

Gordon said he’s rejuvenated this season because of the equipment he gets every week.

Gordon said he’s clicking with his team “and that’s making it a lot of fun for me.”

WITH BLINDERS ON Carl Edwards was asked about his plans for the 2015 season after winning Sonoma. He had nothing to say about it. “I think you guys worry about that more than we do,” Edwards said of the rumors he plans to leave Roush Fenway after 2014. “We come out here and race every week, and the mission is to win the championship, so for me it’s really simple. I just have to give the best I can every week and that’s it.”

INDY WRECK Tony Stewart destroyed a stock car at Indianapolis last week during a Goodyear tire test. Goodyear said: “On Day 2 of the test, the three-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion had a right-front tire lose air 17 laps into a 20lap run.” Stewart said: “We blew a tire. It destroyed the car, so it was a good hit.”

Stewart added: “That’s why you go to the test. I’m sure they’ll learn something from it and go on.”

Officially, nothing. But it’s looking more and more like those late-spring rumors will hold: Edwards will drive a fourth entry for Joe Gibbs Racing next year. For better or worse, there are always all sorts of contractual issues that prevent — or at least discourage — the main players from giving more than a wink and a nod regarding their future plans. Actually, the nod has probably been deemed a breach of contract. We’ll have to go with the wink, and the wink indicates Gibbs.

How crazy is all this?

By auto racing’s historical standards, it’s actually pretty civilized.

Back in your dad’s day, drivers and owners whipsawed back and forth.

There were no contracts back then, so today’s “Jack the Bear” might be tomorrow’s unemployed hot-shoe looking for a wheel. Who knows, maybe that was better. But if you like some semblance of order and stability, today’s way is probably better.

Is Carl playing mind games with Mr. Gordon?

Let’s assume he didn’t mean to do it, but if you’re Jeff Gordon, pushing 43, and pushing it with a cranky back, the last thing you need is a guy pushing 35 to act like you’re Grandpa Jones. But there was Carl, glowing after winning Sunday and saying what a thrill it was to beat a guy (um, Jeff Gordon) whom he watched as acovering kid. Ouch.

The Bulls are back on the clock for Thursday night’s NBA draft. With the 16th and 19th picks, the Bulls’ needs remain the same — a wing shooter, a backup big man, a backup point or combo guard adept at lessening Rose’s ball-handling responsibilities.

The Bulls also own the 49th pick in the second round.

The Bulls obviously can’t drive the action from their current position, which as of late Wednesday hadn’t changed despite consistent attempts to package their picks for one lottery pick.

But by the time Adam Silver finishes his first set of first-round handshakes as NBA commissioner, the two surprises would be if the Bulls added two rookies for next season’s roster and didn’t address shooting.

This draft is stocked with shooters, and Forman and coach Tom Thibodeau have mentioned addressing that need enough to qualify for NRA membership.

The Bulls have scouted, interviewed and conducted private workouts with all the top shooters, including Doug McDermott, Nik Stauskas, Rodney Hood and James Young.

“From a philosophical standpoint, we’re always going to draft who we feel is the best player available,” Forman said at the NBA scouting combine. “If it’s close between two guys and we think one can fill a need for us, we may put a

little weight into that.”

The Bulls have had trade talks with the Magic regarding veteran swingman Arron Afflalo, and league sources indicated they have inquired about Jameer Nelson as well.

Carlos Boozer’s expiring $16.8 million salary has been available and a trade could be a more palatable option than using the amnesty provision on him.

Nelson’s partially guaranteed $8 million deal can be waived before July 15 for $2 million.

ESPN.com reported the Heat at No. 26 could target the Bulls to try to move up and draft point guard Shabazz Napier from national champion Connecticut. The report suggested the Heat would use as an enticement Norris Cole, whom the Bulls coincidentally picked in 2011 and traded to Minnesota in the Nikola Mirotic deal.

But the Bulls could just draft Napier outright rather than making this deal if they’re sold on the undersized but competitive guard.

Whatever happens Thursday, that’s the first step of what promises to be a busy summer. The Bulls are confident they will get an audience with Carmelo Anthony in free agency, with a backup plan of Mirotic and assorted pieces.

“We want to continue to add to our roster and have a fuller roster,” Forman said at the combine.

Adair County GOP nominating convention to nominate county attorney candidate GREENFIELD — The Republican Party of Adair County special nominating convention scheduled for the evening of June 30 will now also nominate a candidate for Adair County attorney. The convention had previously been called to nominate a candidate for Adair County sheriff.

The convention will be held in the meeting room at Greenfield City Hall, and begin at 6:30 p.m., with credentialing begin-

ning at 6 p.m. The only candidate currently seeking the county attorney nomination is Clint Hight of Greenfield. The county sheriff nomination is being sought by Deputy Jeff Vandewater.

“I’m very pleased to have a full ballot of candidates going into the summer campaign season,” said Adair County GOP Chairman Ryan Frederick. “The rule of law is a foundational principle of our re-

public; and one which the Republican Party steadfastly – and it seems exclusively – defends. The citizens of Adair County deserve to be represented in court by someone who shares a commitment to that principle, a claim the Democratic Party cannot make.

Entries sought for Fourth of July parade, talent contest The 10,000 Crestonians, in conjunction with the annual Fourth of July celebration, is sponsoring a parade in uptown Creston at 10 a.m. and a talent contest 6:30 p.m. July 4 at the McKinley Park band shell.

Parade The theme of this year’s parade is “Salute to Freedom.”

There are two divisions, youths (15 years and younger) and adults (16 years and older). Categories in the youths division will be themed entries, novelty wagons and buggies, bicycles, pets and miscellaneous and saddle horses. Adult categories will be themed en-

tries, novelty, antique vehicles, saddle horses, horse or pony hitches and saddle clubs.

This year, bicycles will be given away to the best decorated bicycle entries, because of the generosity of donors. Past winners are not eligible to win bicycles, but are encouraged to participate in the parade for other prizes to be given away.

Creston Bucks will be awarded in all categories except antique vehicles. Ribbons will be presented to all of the antique vehicles.

All entries must be at the assembly area at Creston Livestock Auction by 9:15 a.m.
