Holiday ‘hiccup’ pushes Taco John’s opening to Monday

The holiday season tends to be an especially difficult time for those who have lost family members or friends.

In recognition of this, the students in the East Union Art Club in Afton are making angel ornaments for others to dedicate to lost loved ones.

The ornaments will be hung on a community Christmas tree during the club’s first-ever Tree Remembrance event 4 p.m.

Saturday, Dec. 19 in the basement of First National Bank, 100 E. Railroad St., in Afton.

the holidays and celebrate what it would have been if they were with us now,” Kistler said Savannah Kistler, vice president of East Union Art Club and a senior at East Union Community School.

During the ceremony, the lights on the tree will be turned on to symbolize how

those being remembered are still shining brightly in the hearts of those who lost them. There will be a moment of silence for reflection, and then a time of fellowship with hot chocolate and baked goods. Those who dedicated an angel will then be given their ornament to take home.

“It will be a time to remember loved ones and to share experiences with others who have had similar experiences,” said Sherresse Buzard, K-12 art

teacher at East Union and adviser of the art club.

T h e students Buzard are making the ornaments during the club’s after-school meetings Tuesdays and Thursdays. Each handmade ornament dedication is $5 and is made with ribbon, a jingle bell and Styrofoam and a note attached with the loved one’s name on it.

“We get to measure the ribbon, and we can make them however we want to,” said Jaden Froit, a sixth-grader in the club. “We get to be creative.”

So far, six people have signed up, and a total of 12 angel dedications have been purchased. There is no limit on the number of dedications you may buy. Money raised will help the art club take an educational trip to TREE | 2A

The reopening of the Creston Taco John’s drive-thru has been pushed back three days due to a holiday “hiccup,” store ownership said Tuesday afternoon.

“We had a hiccup with the holiday and with the inspector and scheduling,” said Carrie Styles, who works with Taco John’s of Iowa, the store’s owning company.

The restaurant’s drive-thru will now open 11 a.m.

Deaths Richard Rhine Denison

Richard Eugene Rhine, 73, of Denison passed away on Nov. 16, 2 0 1 5 , after a long battle with Rhine cancer in Mesa, Arizona.

Richard was born on April 16, 1942, on a farm northeast of Prescott, to Harvey and Ruth Rhine.

One of three children, Richard has an older sister, Jan, and a younger brother, David. In 1959, he married his wife of 56 years, Judy Pfundheller of Kent, and together they raised four children.

Richard spent much of his youth working on his father’s farm and being active in 4-H. Richard and Judy briefly settled in Corning, while he worked for Smith Concrete Products. Ultimately, the family moved to Denison, where Richard spent 33 years working for UPS before retiring in 1998.

They attended the United Methodist Church of Denison where Richard was active as a trustee and helped with many projects over the years. One of Richard’s favorite accomplishments was helping to coordinate and build “Kids’ Kastle” in Denison. Richard also was a member of the Denison Optimists and Crawford County Garden Club for many years.

Upon retiring, Richard and Judy traveled to Germany, Switzerland, Austria,

Never one to be still, Richard enjoyed woodworking, hiking, biking, playing cards, dancing and gardening. He was especially proud of his cactus garden in Mesa and was known for playing jokes on his friends. His craftsmanship was also utilized in the many home projects that he assisted with for his children and grandchildren.

Visitation was held 4 to 7 p.m. Nov. 22 at Huebner Funeral Home, 1437 Broadway, in Denison.

Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m. Nov. 23 at First United Methodist Church in Denison with burial in Crawford Heights Memory Garden.

Richard is preceded in death by his daughter Traci and his parents, Harvey and Ruth. He is survived by his wife Judy; daughter Kelly and husband Nino; son Todd and wife Lisa; daughter Staci and husband Joe; grandchildren, Allison, Zachary, Paige, Colin and Ethan; sister Jan and husband Ralph; and brother David and wife Tammy.

The family would also like to acknowledge the care provided to Richard by his oncologist, Dr. Jue Wang, and everyone who provided him with comfort throughout his illness.

For that, we will be forever grateful.

Suspect in Iowa mall shooting told officer he snapped Alexander Kozak, 22, has pleaded not guilty to a charge of murder at the Coral Ridge Mall shooting June 12.

IOWA CITY (AP) — A court document says a man accused of killing a woman at a Coralville mall told officers he “snapped” after getting a text from the woman that said she was breaking off their relationship.

Twenty-two-year-old Al-

exander Kozak has pleaded not guilty to a murder charge in the fatal shooting of 20-year-old Andrea Farrington at Coral Ridge Mall on June 12. His trial is set to begin April 12.

He worked as a mall security guard but quit his job earlier in the day. She worked at a children’s museum kiosk at the mall.

An officer says in a warrant application made public Tuesday that Kozak said after his arrest “that he snapped and went back to his residence in North Liberty” to get his gun.

Franklin Kinkade Creston

Franklin Kinkade, 93, of Creston died Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2015, at Creston Specialty Care in Kinkade Creston.

Celebration of life services will be 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 27, at Powers Funeral Home, junction of highways 34 and 25, in Creston. Burial will be at Maple Hill Cemetery in Cromwell with military rites given by the Theodore J. Martens, Creston VFW Post No. 1797. The family will greet friends at a luncheon following the burial on Friday at Cromwell Church. Memorials are to be established. Online condolences may be left at www.powersfh.com.

Franklin Carrell Kinkade, son of Elmer Eden Kinkade and Evelyn Harrison, was born May 12, 1922, in Cromwell. He graduated from Cromwell High School in 1940. He entered the U.S. Army Air Force in April of 1944 until his honorable discharge in November of 1945.

In March of 1944, Franklin married Marjorie Choate. They later divorced.

On Jan. 1, 1981, Franklin married Yvonne “Vonnie” (Campbell) Schlapia in Cromwell. He owned and operated his own business of underground

construction and land improvement. Franklin lived in Union County most of his life where he owned Kinkade Industries and later Kinkade Sales for many years.

Franklin was a member of Rotary, Creston Chorus, Toastmasters, Republican Central Committee, American Legion and was former president of the Land Improvement Contractors of America. He was also a member of 10,000 Crestonians, McKinley Lake Ski Club and held several positions with Cromwell Church including Sunday school superintendent.

Franklin is survived by his wife Vonnie of Creston; daughters, Connie Kinkade and Carla Kinkade, both of Creston; sons, Keith (Judy) Kinkade of Chestnutridge, Missouri; Kerry (Helen) Kinkade of Overland Park, Kansas; stepchildren, Mark (Ruthie) Schlapia of Diagonal; Lora (Bruce) Rezmer of Peoria, Arizona; Janis (Jim) Schuberth of Blue Springs, Missouri; Joan Woods of Independence, Missouri; sister Ernestine Knott of Fairborne, Ohio; sister-in-law Juanita Finestead of Des Moines; five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, one great-great grandson, eight step-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren.

Franklin was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Carolyn Frazier, Cliffta Francis, Ariel Fischel, Harry Kinkade, Lloyd Kinkade and Clyde Kinkade.

Adair County 4-H’er 1 of 18 representing Iowa at National 4-H Congress GREENFIELD — Adair County 4-H’er Heath Downing, son of Steve and Karen Downing of Creston, is one of 18 Iowa 4 - H ’ e r s Downing selected to represent Iowa as delegates at the 2015 National 4-H Congress Nov. 27 Dec. 1 in Atlanta, Georgia.

The theme for this 94th year of National 4-H Congress is “Excite, Spark, Ignite.”

A nine-year member of 4-H, Downing has been involved in the beef, leadership, citizenship, food and nutrition and communications project areas.

He has served as president, vice president, treasurer, social committee and recreation chairman of his 4-H club. Downing is an active member of the Adair County 4-H youth council and has attended the Iowa 4-H Youth Conference.

“4-H has given me multiple chances to make many

friends and has helped me hone my leadership and citizenship skills to be a better person,” Downing said.

National 4-H Congress recognizes the delegates’ outstanding leadership and community work and is an opportunity for leaders in 4-H to meet and learn from each other. Congress will include keynote speakers, tours of Atlanta, service work around the city, workshops and an international banquet and formal gala.

“This is one of the highest recognition opportunities for senior 4-H’ers in Iowa,” said Cayla Taylor, campus 4-H youth program coordinator with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. “These youth were selected because they have demonstrated exceptional skills in leadership, citizenship and overall achievement.”

WASHINGTON — United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Utilities Service Administrator Brandon McBride today announced that nearly 6 million Americans who live and work in rural areas now have access to new or improved highspeed internet service, thanks to USDA funding provided in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. “I am proud to announce today that all of the active projects USDA has financed through the Recovery Act are now providing broadband service in rural areas nationwide,” McBride said.

“In 2009, the Obama Administration pushed for, and Congress provided USDA with, an unprecedented level of funding and five years to connect rural areas to highspeed networks. Bringing broadband to these areas is having a tremendous impact on rural communities. This access means more jobs, better education and a higher quality of life. The economic viability of rural America, like all of America, depends on access to broadband.”

Two hundred fifty-four Recovery Act broadband

These projects have brought high-speed Internet access to 260,000 rural households, 17,500 businesses and 1,900 community facilities. The service providers estimate that completed projects could provide access for more than 5.8 million rural consumers.

While Congress instructed USDA to improve rural broadband access as part of a sweeping set of infrastructure investments funded through the Recovery Act, USDA is financing additional expansions to rural broadband service through other annual funding.

“We’ve accomplished a great deal as a result of the Recovery Act funding,” McBride said. “But we still have more to do.

Too many rural Americans are still living on the wrong side of the digital divide. USDA is committed to bridging that divide by getting more rural Americans online at work, at school and at home.”

According to the Federal Communications Commission, only 47 percent of people who live and work in rural areas have access to high-speed internet, compared to 90 percent of those who live and work in urban and metropolitan areas.

Count your blessings on ‘Turkey Day’ Thursday gives all of us a chance to say “thank you for all our blessings.” I know the world seems to be spinning pretty fast for all of us any more. But, Thanksgiving is always a good time for us take a little time out and spend it with our families if possible.

I know I take a lot of things for granted day-to-day. But, I’m lucky I have a good family, a lot of good friends and great community to live in. So, take a little time out to say “thanks” for the good people and things that are going on in your life. Life is too short to complain all the time!

Hunters It looks like the hunting season is in full swing. The pheasant hunt-

ers seem to be having better luck this year at knocking down a few birds than in the last five years or so. Also, I’ve been hearing some good reports that there are a fair amount of quail around. The duck and goose hunters seemed to be having a little better luck with the snow we received last week.

The deer hunters will be out in full force come Dec. 5 when the shotgun season starts. Most of the bow hunters have already taken their deer to the locker by now.

NU vs. Iowa Friday is the big game between Nebraska and Iowa. Even with Iowa at 11-0 and Nebraska at 5-6, the point spread is only one and a-half points in Iowa’s favor. So, it should be a good game. Nebraska has already beaten one unde-

feated team in Michigan State and looks to become bowl eligible with a win over Iowa. Iowa is looking to run the table and bring home that first national championship. Being a Husker ... I’m taking Nebraska even in a down year!

Black Friday It looks like Black Friday has moved onto Thursday with many of the big sales starting Thursday evening. I guess it gives people something to do after sitting around eating turkey and watching football all day. Oh yes, don’t forget about watching the parades earlier in the day. I can’t believe that just about everyone doesn’t have a flat-screen TV or a cell phone by now, but there sure are a lot of them on sale.

The Dairy Queen closes today and will not reopen until almost all the snow is gone around the first of March. So stock up now on your favorite ice cream fix or put a couple of quarts of soft serve in your freezer so you can make those hot fudge sundaes when you need a pick-me-up this winter!

Prime Minister David Cameron announced he’ll ask Parliament for authorization for Britain to join the war on ISIS. If it passes, Great Britain would join the U.S., France and Russia in the war on ISIS. The alliance would allow ISIS to tie Nazi Germany’s all-time record for strength of schedule.

Donald Trump suggested Monday that U.S. interrogators water-board ISIS captives. However Democrats said interrogations must reflect American values.

Those values have included conquest, enslavement, and atomic bombing, so you’d think ISIS will be happy to go with the dunk tank option.

November is National Hospice Month From Taj Casagrande

Please join me this National Hospice Month and all year-long to encourage those facing life-limiting illnesses to consider utilizing the benefits hospice care provides.

Talking about death is not a comfortable situation for many people.

But it is an inevitable component that comes with living. There are trained professionals who are able to assist patients and families through this difficult stage, but not many people are familiar with the concept of hospice. I’d like to list five things to help people understand what hospice is, and more importantly, what it isn’t.

Hospice is not a place. Hospice is a specialized practice of care for someone who is near death.

Hospice care can be provided anywhere – in a nursing home or hospital, but most often, treatment is

given in a person’s home.

Hospice does not replace medical care. The main difference between standard medical care and hospice care is instead of treating to cure, hospice treats to care. In hospice, medication and therapies are only prescribed to manage pain for relieve symptoms.

Hospice is available to people of any age or condition. Patients with any kind of terminal illness can receive hospice care. A main criterion is that a patient’s doctor must determine that life expectancy is six-months or less.

Most hospice costs are covered

by Medicare, Medicaid or private insurers. Hospice providers can arrange for in-home amenities like a bed, oxygen and other needed equipment. Hospice providers can help teach at-home caregivers how to operate equipment or administer certain medications. And if an in-home caregiver is not capable

the hospice team can find a private nurse. Medicare, Medicaid and the Veteran’s Administration may cover all hospice costs for those eligible. Those with private insurance should consult their insurance carrier.

Hospice care does not hurry death. Hospice empowers people to choose how to spend their final days and die with dignity and peace of mind. The purpose of hospice is to relieve suffering and to make the end of life more meaningful. Hospice staff can help patient and family come to terms with death.

Winter feeding and grazing session to be held in Oskaloosa OSKALOOSA — The final session in a three-part series for young and beginning graziers in southern Iowa is set for Dec. 14. Iowa State University (ISU) Extension beef program specialist Pat Wall said this event will focus on winter feeding and grazing.

“We’ll start at 5:30 p.m. at the Mahaska County Extension Office in Oskaloosa with a meal sponsored by the Mahaska County Cattlemen,” Wall said. “You don’t need to have participated in either of the two sessions

held earlier this year to attend, but please preregister for an accurate meal count.”

Wall and ISU Extension beef program specialist Joe Sellers will lead discussions on various subjects following the meal, with the primary topic of winter grazing in Iowa including stockpiled forage and cornstalk residue.

Fall and winter feeding, including extended grazing of cover crops and supplementation, also are on the agenda.

Metallic Spritz Cookies Makes: 10 dozen cookies 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 1/2 cups (3 sticks) butter, softened 1 cup granulated sugar 1 egg 2 tablespoons milk 1 teaspoon Wilton Pure Vanilla Extract 1/2 teaspoon Wilton Imitation Almond Extract Silver Color Mist Food Color Spray Gold Color Mist Food Color Spray Buttercream icing Wilton Silver Sugar Pearls Wilton Gold Sugar Pearls Heat oven to 350 F. In medium bowl, combine flour and baking powder.

In large bowl, beat butter and sugar with electric mixer until light and fluffy. Add egg, milk and extracts; mix well. Gradually add flour to butter mixture, mixing to make smooth dough.

Do not chill.

Place dough into cookie press using an 8-petal flower disk and press cookies onto ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 10-12 minutes or until lightly browned around edges. Cool cookies on pan on cooling grid 2 minutes. Remove from pan; cool completely on grid. You will need two cookies per treat.

Use silver or gold Color Mist food color spray to spray cookies. Let dry, about 3-5 minutes. Turn cookies over and spray underside. Let dry, about 3-5 minutes.

Prepare buttercream icing or use pre-made buttercream icing. Use tip 12, cut disposable decorating bag and icing to pipe elongated beads on bottom of one cookie, following cookie shape. Sandwich two cookies together.

Makes: 24 spoons Wilton Sugar Cookie Candy Melts Candy (12-ounce bag) Wilton Christmas Candy Spoon Mold Wilton 12-inch Disposable Decorating Bags Break 12 candy wafers in half and place in cavities of mold.

Place mold in microwave and microwave at half power or defrost setting for 1 minute. Gently jiggle and lightly tap mold to smooth melted candy. Continue to microwave and tap at 30-second intervals until smooth and completely melted.

Alternate melting method: Melt candy in disposable decorating bag according to candy package directions. Snip a small tip off end of bag and gently squeeze bag to fill cavities with melted candy.

Chill filled mold until candy spoons have hardened, about 10-15 minutes. Place mold on flat surface and gently push on bottom of cavities to release candy.

Gouda stuffed meatball subs Meatballs 1 Tbsp. olive oil 1/2 medium onion, chopped 2 garlic cloves, minced 1/2 lb. ground beef (80% lean, 20% fat) 1/2 lb. ground pork

1/2 cup fresh white breadcrumbs 2 Tbsp. parsley, chopped 2 Tbsp. warm water 4 oz. gouda, cut into 1/2-3/4 inch cubes 2 Tbsp. olive oil

Heat olive oil in medium saute pan over medium-high heat. Add onions and saute until softened, about 5 minutes. Add garlic and cook 30 more seconds. Remove from heat and cool.

Mix together ground beef and ground pork and water with onion mixture. Season with salt and pepper. Use your hands to form a 1 1/2 inch meatball. Make an indentation in the center and place 1 block of cheese. Cover the cheese with the meat. Repeat with the remaining meat, making about 12-15 meatballs.

Heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in a deep skillet over medium heat. Add the meatballs, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. You may have to cook the meatballs in batches. Brown the meatballs on all sides, turning as they cook. Remove from pan and set aside. Discard the oil.

Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in the same pan. Add the chopped onions and saute until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and cook an additional minute. Pour in the red wine and increase heat to high. Reduce the wine until almost completely evaporated. Add the canned tomatoes, and season with salt and pepper. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and let simmer 20 minutes.

Add the meatballs and cook 20 minutes or until completely cooked through. Place 3-4 meatballs per sub (4 hoagie rolls) and spoon extra sauce on top. Serves four. turkey meatballs with Parsley and lemon 4 cups store-bought marinara sauce or a batch of the above marinara sauce 1 lb. ground turkey 1 egg 1/2 cup grated Romano cheese 1/2 cup minced parsley, divided 1/3 cup dry breadcrumbs 11/2 Tbsp. grated lemon peel 2/3 cup thinly sliced scallion 1/2 tsp. salt In a large deep skillet or shallow saucepan bring the marinara sauce to a simmer over medium heat. In a bowl combine turkey, Romano cheese, breadcrumbs, scallion, egg, half the parsley, 1 1/2 teaspoons of the lemon peel and the salt. With dampened hands form the mixture into 20 golf-size balls. Add meatballs to marinara sauce and simmer, covered, 12 to 15 minutes, or until cooked through. In a bowl combine the remaining parsley and the lemon peel. Sprinkle over meatballs. Hicks wins Stephen Tsai Award Michelle Hicks was awarded the 2015 Stephen Tsai Award for Excellence in Education by the Autism Society of Iowa (ASI) at their annual fall conference Nov. 13.

Hicks has worked as a speech-language pathologist at Green Hills AEA since 1988 and also serves on the agency’s autism resource team. Through her work at the AEA, Hicks has helped numerous children, families and educators. She has also worked to organize and facilitate awareness and fundraising for events such as ASI’s annual 5K run/walk in Creston and the annual ASI golf benefit.

The Tsai Award is presented each year to an outstanding individual in Iowa who has contributed to the field of autism spectrum disorders and who has had an impact on individuals with autism spectrum disorders.

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — A Russian military pilot whose plane was shot down by Turkey and crashed in Syria arrived on Wednesday at an air base in Latakia province after being rescued by a Syrian army commando unit, Syrian and Russian officials said.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu told Russian news agencies that the man was rescued in a 12-hour operation which ended in the early hours on Wednesday and is now “safe and sound” at Russia’s air base in the government-controlled area in Syria.

Turkey shot down the Russian warplane on Tuesday, saying it ignored repeated warnings after crossing into its airspace from Syria. One of the two pilots was killed and captured by Syrian rebels who said they were searching for the other. The incident inflamed tensions between Turkey and Russia, and Russian President Vladimir Putin warned of “significant consequences.”

A statement from the Syrian armed forces on Wednesday said a special unit carried out overnight a “qualitative” operation with the Russian forces and rescued one of the two pilots.

Russian President Vladimir Putin also confirmed a second pilot has been rescued.

In a statement carried by Syria’s official news agency SANA, the army said the Syrian and Russian forces penetrated into the areas where “terrorists” are entrenched at a depth

Three Panthers on Class 3A all-state teams 3A rushing leader Shiltz on first team

Class 3A’s leading rusher, a dominant lineman who helped open holes for him and the program’s all-time leader in tackles are allstaters today for the Creston/Orient-Macksburg football team.

A panel of Iowa sports writers, assisted by representatives from the Iowa Football Coaches Association, selected the Iowa Newspaper Association’s all-state football teams last weekend. Those teams were announced today.

Chase Shiltz, the Panthers’ iron man ball carrier this season, moved from the all-state second team as a sophomore to the first-team backfield this year.

Offensive right tackle Trevor Downing, just a sophomore, was named to the Class 3A second team, along with senior linebacker Seth Maitlen, who ended his career as a two-time allstater.

Shiltz finished with 2,542 yards and 35 touchdowns for the 6-5 Panthers, which led Class 3A. He is already the program’s career rushing leader with 3,792 yards in two seasons. Shiltz surpassed 1,000 yards in just his final three games, including 308 yards against backto-back champion Pella, despite suffering a broken

“He’s a tough kid,” said Creston/O-M head coach Brian Morrison. “Last year he played the Heelan (semifinal) game with a torn meniscus, and nobody knew he was in a lot of pain. He’s just a really competitive kid.

We’re really glad he’s just a junior and we’ll have him back.”

Strong finish

Shiltz became a workhorse in the second half of the season, carrying 30 to 45 times a game as he relinShiltz quished some of his former defensive duties with the return of safety Brody Frain from injury.

The Panther line play was instrumental in a frequently used wildcat formation, called “Tank,” in which Shiltz took a direct snap for a carry with an offensive lineman replacing the quarterback for additional blocking in the trenches.

At 5-11 and 186 pounds, there are bigger backs in the district, and faster players on opposing teams, but no team was effective in shutting him down.

“He’s a special kid,” Morrison said. “Typically you see running backs with spe-

Coy Roussell of West Delaware, second to Shiltz in rushing yards in Class 3A, was named the offensive utility player on the first unit. The first-team quarterback is Pella’s Noah Clayberg. Harlan kicker Ethan Knudson was also named to the first-team offense.

Downing also played a lot on the defensive line for the Panthers before an injury led Morrison and offensive coordinator Ryan McKim to have him focus primarily on the offensive side.

Maitlen, meanwhile, was a mainstay on the Panther defense for three years as inside linebacker. He set a school record for tackles as a junior for the state semifinal team, and followed that by leading the team again in 2015 with 28 solo stops and 73 assisted tackles. He had seven tackles for loss and was frequently used as a receiver out of the backfield

Mount Ayr’s Class A semifinalist team was rewarded by having six players named to the Iowa Newspaper Association’s all-state football teams announced today.

Nodaway Valley’s Brennen Weiland also earned all-state honors in Class A. The INA all-state teams are selected by a panel of sports writers, with assistance from the Iowa Football Coaches Association.

Mount Ayr placed two players on each of the three teams in Class A, led by first-teamers Kyle Dolecheck and Jacob Taylor. Logan Stark and Nick Wurster were each named to the second team and Lincoln Lutrick and Jed McCreary earned third-team honors.

“I think certainly the success we had plays into those selections,” Mount Ayr cocoach Delwyn Showalter said.

“Obviously people are aware of Mount Ayr. It’s not just our success this year, but the last two years. That always helps get some of those postseason

Dolecheck was named to the first team as a wide receiver after putting together a spectacular semifinal game Dolecheck against Akron-Westfield.

The 6-1, 175-pound senior finished the season with 46 catches for 721 yards and 10 touchdowns, while also racking up 751 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns on 99 carries.

“He could have been allstate at a number of different spots,” Showalter said. “He could have been an all-state defensive back. He could have been a running back had we featured him there.

He made his name on the big stage as a receiver, especially in that last game.”

“He is virtually unguardable,” Mount Ayr co-coach Derek Lambert said. “He’s a young man we really like our players to model after, because he very easily could have been a go-to wide receiv-

er every play. He could have been a 1,500-yard tailback, as well. He fits into our system really well, being able to run and catch the ball.”

“He’s got speed. He can jump. He’s got great hands on him. He has the ability to start and stop on a dime and changes directions,” Showalter added. “He has the whole package.”

Taylor joins Dolecheck on the first team as a defensive back.

The 6-1, 170-pound senior played defensive back for the Raiders all four years and finished this year with 26 Taylor solo tackles and 22 assisted tackles to go with two interceptions.

But it was his play at quarterback this fall that garnered him all-state attention.

Two leaders of Lenox’s 10-1 season and a force in the middle of East Union’s offense and defense are 8-Man all-staters today as selected by the Iowa Newspaper Association.

The panel of sports writers assisted by Iowa football coaches named Spencer Brown of Lenox to the first-team defense and teammate Carson Cline to the second-team defensive secondary.

East Union’s Mike Ward, who also played middle linebacker, was one of three running backs on the third-team offense.

All three honored area players are seniors.

Brown was often a dominant player on the field for Lenox, which sailed unbeaten through the season until East Mills avenged an earlier defeat in the second round of the playoffs.

Despite the fact that most opposing offenses ran away from him, the 6-8, 240-pound end finished with 67 tackles, including 17 quarterback sacks. As a junior he had 12 sacks. On Brown offense, he had 24 pass receptions this season for 388 yards and seven touchdowns.

“Spencer really had to work to come back from two knee surgeries,” Lenox coach Allen Dukes said.

“He underwent those in early January and May, so he was in eight months of rehab.”

Yet, there were times Brown seemed unstoppable.

“There were games where he could just take over,” Dukes said. “Like his first game against East Union. He dominated that game on the defensive side. And there were other games where he stepped

up and played well on offense. He was unanimous first-team all-district on defense and second team on offense.”

Brown has visited Iowa and Iowa State as a preferred walk-on candidate and has also generated interest from Northwest Missouri State. However, the talented all-around athlete is also a college prospect as a power forward in basketball and pitcher in baseball.

“Sometimes I think whatever season it is, that’s Spencer’s favorite,” Dukes said, chuckling. “It’s really hard to tell what he might end up doing. But he will have opportunities, I will assure you of that.”

Cline, meanwhile, was the leader of the Lenox team as the quarterback and defensive back with Cline six interceptions, including four returned for touchdowns. He also returned a fumble for a score.

On offense, Cline completed 77 of 162 passes for 1,552 yards for 26 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also ran 125 times for 694 yards and 12 TDs. As a junior Cline passed

for 1,093 yards and 18 scores, including 36 completions for 586 yards and 10 touchdowns to Brown.

The all-state quarterbacks were Ben Specht of state champion Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn (3,428 total yards and 66 touchdowns rushing and passing), Noah Dodd of Janesville (2,187 passing yards) and Derek Ehrhardt of Central Elkader (1,709 passing yards and 30 TDs).

But, the committee decided Cline was an all-state football player and placed him on the second team at defensive back.

“Carson was the leader of our team on and off the field,” Dukes said. “He was basically the heart and soul of our team. It was just like having a coach out there.

He would put people in the right position. He really exceeded what we thought we might get out of him.”

Eagle standout

East Union’s Ward was a two-way standout, but especially had an impact carrying the ball for the Eagles with his hard-running style.

The 6-0, 210-pound senior rushed for 1,709 yards and 30 touchdowns. On defense he had 58 tackles.

Taylor finished the year 74of-150 passing for 1,142 yards and 13 touchdowns compared to seven interceptions. He also picked up 743 yards and 18 touchdowns on the ground on 112 carries.

“Jacob is so much fun. He’s a guy that kind of brings a tear to your eye,” Lambert said.

“At the beginning of the season, we said, ‘Jacob, I’m handing you this football and I really want you to take over like you take over in basketball games.’ Boy, did he do that for us this year, running and throwing the ball.”

Showalter said Taylor’s leadership this season was irreplaceable.

“He had to work to become our leader,” Showalter said. “That’s a tough situation for a kid from another

school to come in and be the quarterback. He handled that extremely well. There was no question he was our leader.”

Stark, the Class A District 8 Defensive Player of the Year earned second-team honors on the defensive line.

The 5-9, 205-pound senior switched positions on both sides of the ball this season, from linebacker, where he Stark had been a starter, to defensive tackle and from running back to center.

Rick Johnson, United Development Group, LLC, has purchased land and is constructing a building that will house the new Dollar Tree retail store in Creston. He is asking for the City to give him $30,000 over a total of five years. He explained that many cities have used the option of using TIF funds, as well as other options.

One issue with granting a commercial tax abatement is that the Dollar Tree would be the one to apply and receive the abatement, not the developers. After much discussion, it was the consensus of the Council to move forward with creating a development agreement to pay the developer $30,000 over a five-year period.

Public notice REGULAR MEETING OF THE CRESTON CITY COUNCIL NOVEMBER 17, 2015 The Creston City Council met in regular session at 6:00 o'clock p.m. on the above date in the Council Chambers of the City Hall Complex with Mayor Woods presiding.

Roll call being taken with the following Council members present: Loudon, Lybarger, Koets, Wilson, Carroll, Madison and White.

Mayor Woods requested Item #9 be deleted - "Resolution to approve hiring Richard Eagan for the Street Department Operator I position, contingent upon passing required physical."
