Creston man sentenced to 9+ years in prison COUNCIL BLUFFS — Peter James Wiley, 33, of Creston was sentenced Wednesday to 110 months in prison for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

His sentencing also includes three years of supervision following release.

On Dec. 10, 2013, Wiley was identified as a person of interest in a shooting in Page County — according to a United States Department of Justice press release.

Wiley was captured by Creston Police officers and police dog Minko in Dec. 10, 2013, after a 45-minute manhunt in Union County.

There, he shot at a woman’s vehicle in Casey’s General Store in Corning.

On Dec. 11, 2013, Adams County Sheriff released the description of a vehicle involved in a possible shooting. Creston Police Sgt. Eric Shawler identified a vehicle matching the description in Creston around 5:15 a.m. that day after the vehicle failed to stop at a stop

A pursuit occurred which culminated with Wiley setting his vehicle on fire on 160th Street in Union County.

What do you do when your boyfriend dumps you and breaks your heart? Follow him to Harvard Law School.

In the award-winning romantic comedy, which is based on the MGM film, Legally Blonde the Musical, Elle Woods (Brenna Baker) follows her ex-boyfriend Warner (Jake Hitz) to Harvard Law School with the hopes of winning him back.

At Harvard, Elle feels overwhelmed and unprepared as Jake finds new love with Vivian (Maddie Travis), who is a serious law student. Determined to get Jake back, Elle works toward her law degree, as well, to prove to Jake that she is good enough.

Baker said her character Elle is heartbroken and a bit distracted at first. But, with the help of her friends and classmates, she becomes empowered and learns what real beauty is all about.

The musical features 15 songs and choreographed

“My favorite scene is ...

‘What You Want,’” Baker said. “It’s the whole choir, which, I really like.”

Baker said she loves the scene because it’s chaotic as Elle is trying to get into Harvard.

“It’s a longer song. Elle starts at the house, gets approval from her dad and makes her way to the admissions of Harvard,” Baker said.

Creston and Prescott community school boards passed a motion to draft a petition to continue with the consolidation of the two school districts during a special joint meeting Wednesday at Prescott Community School.

The petition is part of the state of Iowa code to hold a hearing for Green Hills Area Education Agency to allow the school districts to continue with consolidation. There will need to be at least 490 signatures on the petition.

Creston and Prescott school boards will vote on the final petition draft separately at their regularly scheduled meetings Nov. 17 and 19, respectively.

Stabbing occurs today at Axe Murder House VILLISCA —Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office conducted an investigation of a reported stabbing 12:45 a.m. today in Villisca at the “Axe Murder House,” 508 E. Second St. According to a Montgomery County Sheriff’s report, Robert Steven Laursen Jr. of Rhinelander, Wis., suffered a self-inflicted injury while visiting the location for a recreational paranormal investigation.

Deaths Carrie B. Williams Corning

Carrie Williams, 96, of Corning died Nov. 3, 2014, after a short illness.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Williams Saturday, Nov. 8, at the Corning United Methodist Church. The Rev. Andrew Bardole will officiate. Inurnment will be at a later date at Walnut Grove Cemetery in Corning. Open visitation will be 4-8 p.m. today with family receiving friends from 4-6 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials may be directed to the Rose Ann Auxiliary, Corning United Methodist Church or the Corning Public Library.

Pearson Family Funeral Service of Corning is in charge of arrangements.

Carrie Bernice (Melick) Williams, daughter of Helen (Stahl) and Henry Melick, was born on May 5, 1918 in West Liberty. After graduating high school from West Liberty, she attended and graduated from Eureka College in Illinois. Carrie went on to attend Drake University.

After graduating from Drake in 1939, with a bachelors of science degree in English, she taught English and social studies at Williamson Elementary School in Iowa.

After a brief teaching career, she married Donald Earl Williams on Oct. 25, 1941 at the Christian Church in West Liberty. Soon af-

ter their marriage, Don was called into the service with the Army where he served his country during WWII. They welcomed their first daughter, Carol Ann, on Jan. 21, 1943 in Iowa City.

Their second daughter, Helen Cameron, was born on July 13, 1945 in Fairfield.

After four years of service to his country during WWII, the family was reunited and moved to Clarinda.

There they owned and operated a gas station. In 1951, the family acquired Gambles Hardware Store in Corning and moved to their family home on Grove Avenue where they lived for 63 years.

Carrie was a homemaker and mother, and she was often seen helping Don at the hardware store. As a member of the United Methodist Church in Corning, she was active in many church circles and also a volunteer with the Rose Ann’s Hospital Auxiliary.

Carrie is survived by her husband of 73 years, Donald Williams; two siblings, Marion Louise (Melick) Motis and H. Filmore Melick; her two children, Carol Ann (Robert) Cline, and Helen Knight; seven grandchildren, Cindy (Kendall) Roberts, Wendy (Gary) Young, Chris (Karen) Cline, Patrick Knight, Sean Knight (Angie), Kerry Knight, Anne (Tyson) Greenwalt; and 12 great-grandchildren: Nick Young, Kellen Roberts, Ghie Dutch, Spencer Dutch, Darby Young, Taylor Young, Tristan Greenwalt, Julia Knight, Emily Knight, Mason Greenwalt, Jessica Knight and Erica Knight.

Carrie was preceded in death by her parents Henry and Helen Melick, sister Marg Ruth (Melick) Martin and son-in-law Philip B. Knight.

District Board of Directors will have four Creston members and one Prescott member, until the next election.

The vote to consolidate the school districts was moved to April 7, 2015, to allow board members more time to prepare for the next stages in the process, including the petition, hearing and listening to objections.

Since the vote will be held in 2015, the consolidation cannot happen until the school year beginning in the next calendar year.

This means the districts will remain separate, and have separate boards of directors, for the 2015-16 school year.

“It’s a numbers game.

You’re going to five (board members),” said Creston and Prescott Schools Superintendent Steve McDermott. “If this would pass, then we’d go to five, and that would mean five folks would not be on anymore.”

Upon capture, Wiley was transported to Greater Regional Medical Center and treated for burns he sustained after fleeing his vehicle.

Wiley pled guilty to the weapons charge on June 5.

The investigation was conducted by the Shenandoah Police Department, Creston Police Department, Page County Sheriff’s Office, Adams County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Wiley’s case was prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa.

four Creston members and one from Prescott. The following election will have five at-large board positions available.

“Have five board members, at-large, throughout one district,” said Prescott School Board Member Doug Birt. “I don’t know why you would split off Prescott. When you’re becoming one district, you make it one district.”

The petition requires 400 signatures from eligible Creston voters, and 90 from eligible Prescott voters to continue in the consolidation process.

Taxes

Other information discussed during the joint meeting included the assumption of debt. Currently, Prescott Community School District has no debt, but Creston Community School District does.

Board members decided to keep the districts’ current debts separate, and any debt accrued as a possibly consolidated district will not be mixed with the former debts.

Consolidation will increase Prescott’s tax levy

incrementally over the next four years, while Creston’s tax levy will decrease incrementally over the same amount of time.

“At this point, we have recommended that the existing debt of Creston stays with Creston, and the existing debt of Prescott stays with Prescott,” McDermott said. “Now, that would raise, after that four-year ratcheting, that would raise the Prescott levy $2.40, according to projections.”

If the current debts are combined between the two districts, Prescott’s tax levy is projected to increase by $4.50 per $1,000 of valuation.

Timeline

Prescott School Board members have considered consolidation for a long time. The board members spoke with board members from Corning and Orient previously, but talks fell through.

“No one was interested in our staff, certainly,” said Prescott Board Member Marnie Cline.

Talks with Creston board members succeeded, beginning in 2013, because a plan was in place, and Creston Community School District is large enough to fulfill state consolidation requirements for number of students after the final count.

Informational meetings have been set up before each regularly scheduled Creston and Prescott school board meeting to discuss where the board members are in the process and the opinions of citizens.

Available options if the consolidation fails to pass include keeping the school open another year and voluntary dissolution, similar to what Clearfield Community School District is currently going through.

If a voluntary dissolution fails to pass as well, however, Iowa Department of Education employees can step in and force a dissolution.

Catholic Daughters

Court Joan of Arc #428 of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas met at 6 p.m.

Oct. 14 at Holy Spirit hall. A Rosary was prayed, instead of having Mass. A meal of soups and dessert was served by the committee of Betty Baker, Jane Collins and Ann Marie Kinsella.

Regent Retta Ripperger read an article on the history of the Rosary.

Guest speaker was Ken Bresnan from Catholic Charities. He spoke on their work with immigrants and refugees.

The business meeting opened with prayer. Minutes of the last meeting and the treasurer’s report were read and approved. Ripperger gave a report on the workshop she attended in Jefferson. They received information on living wills and heard several pro-life speakers.

ee met at First National Bank to update signatures on accounts and check the contents of the safe deposit box. Discussion was held on what to do with money received from the CD. Pat Wagner made the motion to table the discussion until there is more information.

Ripperger reported on attending Guest Day at the Platte Center Church. She also attended the CD of A workshop. They were given amendments to the by-laws.

It was recommended that each court have a “Tools of the Trade” book.

The Bunn bake sale will be Nov. 21. Baker will confirm the time and buildings before the next meeting.

This court is one of the hosts of the state convention to be held May 14-17 in Des Moines. The theme is “To Jesus through Mary.” They are asking for eight people from each court to help.

Members are also expected to donate 10 door prizes.

Baker has agreed to be card chairman.

The state has stressed that each court have a financial review with the district deputy present. The recording secretary, financial secretary and treasurer should also be present and bring their books. This was to be done

by Nov. 1. Members are also supposed to have an annual budget. Baker, Jean Miller and Jane Collins agreed to be on the audit committee.

There are three new members: Susan Kosman, Janet Brown and Katie Brennan.

Next month’s program will

be by the “Old Market.” She will present Christmas gift ideas.

The meeting closed with the CD of A membership prayer. Miller made the motion to adjourn. Baker seconded. Meeting adjourned.

Crest Area for Life

Crest Area for Life met 7 p.m. Oct. 28 at the Holy Spirit hall for its annual meeting. President Betty Baker opened up the meeting with the right to life prayer.

Twenty members were in attendance.

Terry Madison gave the secretary’s report from September and the annual report. They were both approved.

Pat Pokorny gave the treasurer’s reports for the month and the annual meeting.

They were both approved.

Velma Riegel sent out 17 baby congratulatory cards for the month and 133 for the year.

Under old business, Meg Crawford was thanked for writing up the newsletter.

Under new business, the LC clinic in Stuart will be having training for volunteers in November in Creston.

The nominating committee of Baker and Velma Riegel presented the following slate of officers for 2015: President Meg Crawford, Vice President Jeremy Rounds, Secretary Terry Madison and Treasurer June Huewe.

Phyllis Allen made a motion, seconded by Rich Madison, to accept the slate of officers. It was approved.

Reunion CHS Class of 1949 The CHS class of 1949 held its 65th reunion at Crestmoor Golf Club Sept.

A memorial service was given on Sept. 26. At the conclusion of the service, nine helium balloons were released into the air in honor of nine classmates who have died during the past five years.

On Sept. 27, a class picture was taken of the 18 class members after which a buffet dinner was served to

the entire group. All spent time getting reacquainted and reminiscing about their school days.

The weekly Kiwanis meeting was held 12:05 p.m. Tuesday at The Windrow with 27 members and one guest.

The program was Lori Harvey and Kristen Ambrose with Creston Nursing and Rehab. They discussed the new addition on their nursing home on Cottonwood, and the expansion of therapy services and additional private rooms they will now be able to offer to their short- and long-term clients.

The selling period for the fresh Christmas wreath fundraiser is now closed, and the fresh wreaths will be delivered the week of Thanksgiving.

Is vision loss inevitable with age? The answer may surprise you (BPT) - Eighty-three percent of U.S. adults believe their eyesight will worsen as they age, no matter what preventive steps they take, according to a recent DSM Nutritional Products survey. While genetics and lifestyle factors do play a role for some serious eye conditions that cause vision loss such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), years of proper nutrition may protect vision in the long term.

More than 2 million Americans age 50 and older suffer from AMD, and it is especially prevalent among Caucasian women. “You don’t want to reach your 40s and realize that you’re beginning to have vision problems,” says Dr. Kimberly Reed, optometrist and Ocular Nutrition Society board member. “Following a few simple recommendations can help support your vision - and your family’s vision now and in the future.”

two powerful antioxidants that research shows are beneficial in maintaining macular health. Intake of 12 mg per day of lutein and zeaxanthin offers the best protection, but only 10 percent of Americans are getting enough of these essential nutrients, according to the American Optometric Association. For weekly meal planning this year, choose colorful fruits and vegetables that provide these important antioxidants, like spinach, kale, and other dark leafy greens, as well as corn, peas, broccoli, and orange and red peppers.

2. Omega-3 fatty acids for eye health A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed that people with higher intakes of omega-3 fatty acids may experience a lower incidence of dry eye syndrome (DES). For patients who suffer regularly from dry eyes, omega-3 intake can significantly improve symptoms and increase quality tear production. Adults should get at least 1,500 mg per day of DHA and EPA either by consuming fatty fish, such as salmon, mackerel, and sardines, or taking

high-quality fish oil and algae supplements. Be sure to check with your physician if you are taking medications that affect blood clotting before increasing your intake of omega-3s to this level. For women who are pregnant or nursing, DHA is an essential nutrient to support infant visual development.

3. Remember your vitamins and minerals An array of vitamins and

minerals also play an important role in maintaining eye health. For instance, A and B vitamins perform many complex and critical functions throughout the body, including the eyes.

And, according to a study published in Ophthalmology, vitamins C and E, which function as antioxidants, are also essential to eye health and have been shown to impact the progression of certain forms of AMD. Finally,

zinc helps deliver vitamin A from the liver to the retina in order to produce melanin, a protective pigment in the eyes. Get your fill of at least five servings of colorful fruits and vegetables, as well as nuts and legumes, per day to obtain these essential vitamins and minerals.

PROSTATE CANCER SCREENING AND A FALSE SENSE OF INSECURITY Just as the Ebola epidemic has triggered a false sense of insecurity in North Americans (no reason to panic; we have clean water, electricity, good hospitals, doctors and medications that can effectively combat its spread), it seems that suggesting guys and docs skip the regular PSA (prostate-specific antigen) test for prostate cancer has made both medical professionals and patients unnecessarily nervous.

Turns out that a having a larger-than-average prostate, a urinary tract or prostate infection or a recent medical procedure can elevate PSA levels (normal PSA level are 4.0 ng/ml) leading to an unacceptable number of false positives.

Those false positives often lead to unnecessary treatment, erectile dysfunction, incontinence and a ton of mental anguish.

Yet a recent survey found that an estimated 17 million men age 50 or older, without a history of prostate cancer or other prostate problems, still are being screened every year using the unreliable test, even though the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force recommended in 2011 that it be dropped. The American Urological Association guidelines suggest: —No PSA screening for men under age 40.

—No PSA screening for 40- to 54-year-olds with average risk for prostate cancer.

—Shared decision-making with doctor for men 5569.

—No routine PSA screening for men over 70.

Your best protection: A diagnosis of prostate cancer should be based on family history and a doctor’s physical exam, including a digital rectal exam. A better screening test is needed and may be on the way. Currently, a certain diagnosis can be made only via biopsy.

First-place tie CINCINNATI (AP) — The Cleveland Browns took full advantage of Andy Dalton’s miserable night Thursday, dominating the Cincinnati Bengals 24-3 in an AFC North showdown that was shockingly one-sided from the outset.

Cleveland (6-3) improved its best start since 1994 and moved into a first-place tie with Pittsburgh in the NFL’s toughest division.

The Browns also ended one of their most enduring streaks of futility. They won a division game on the road for the first time since 2008, ending a streak of 17 consecutive losses.

And they did it with a showing that suggested they’re finally for real.

Not the Bengals (53-1), who once again came apart in the national spotlight. Cincinnati is 18-41 in prime-time games.

The Browns roughed up Dalton, who was 10 of 33 for 86 yards with three interceptions and two sacks.

It was the second rout in a week against an overmatched college JV squad, but Southwestern men’s coach Todd Lorensen still found signs of progress in his first Spartan team here Thursday night.

Coming off a 120-73 romp over Graceland JV on Monday, the Spartans handcuffed the Grand View JV, 96-49. The Spartans were on fire offensively, sinking nine 3-pointers in the contest.

There were several crowd-pleasing fast breaks and dunks entertaining the enthusiastic student crowd — including 23 points poured in by sophomore g u a r d Jaylon Smith of Memphis, Tenn. — but there were other aspects of the Smith win that pleased the new Spartan coach.

“We took much better care of the basketball, playing under control better,” Lorensen said. “We looked more like ourselves. And defensively, we were a lot more solid within our system. Basically, that’s being in the gaps in the help (position) before you need to be in the help.”

Tigers win WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — Artavis Scott took a touch pass from Cole Stoudt 68 yards for the go-ahead touchdown with 10:53 left, and No. 19 Clemson pulled away to beat Wake Forest 34-20 on Thursday night.

Stoudt finished 27 of 42 for 282 yards with three touchdowns — two to Scott, one to Wayne Gallman — and Gallman added a late rushing score to help the Tigers (7-2, 6-1 Atlantic Coast Conference, No. 21 CFP) win their sixth straight.

Three Eagles on all-district first team East Union placed three players on the first team and five total players on EightMan District 7’s all-district teams, announced this week.

Eagle seniors Brandon Hulsey and Cole Campbell, along with junior Mike Ward, were named to the all-district first team. They are joined by Murray senior Ben Rockhold.

Campbell finished the year 57of-117 passing for 969 yards with 14 touchdowns and six interceptions. Campbell He also ranked

What a ride it’s been

In Larry Peterson’s column Thursday, he wrote about enjoying the ride as a sports writer.

Going back to this past spring season, it’s been a wild ride for the ages for teams in the Creston News Advertiser and Osceola Sentinel-Tribune coverage areas.

There was Jay Wolfe’s state championship in the 800 meters and Mount Ayr’s dominance at the Co-ed State Track Meet, where the Raiders claimed the school’s first ever boys state track team title.

In the summer, there was the upstart Mount Ayr softball team that went on an improbably run all the way to the regional finals.

And who can forget Clarke’s state softball championship, won on a walkoff home run by senior Carley Robins.

Fast forward to the current fall season, where area cross country runners excelled on the course.

Nodaway Valley’s “Black Plague” put together one of the most dominant seasons by a team I’ve ever seen, eventually placing fourth at the state meet last weekend. I know coach Darrell Bur-

meister and his Wolverines were disappointed in the fourth-place finish, but what they accomplished this season was remarkable.

Creston’s “Red Thunder” duo of Cooper McDermott and Jay Wolfe made their mark, too. McDermott joined me as a back-toback Hawkeye 10 Conference individual champion. Their 13th and 16th place finishes at state are the highest placings by a pair of Creston runners since Paul Hoff finished fourth and Mike Linch finished 10th in 1988.

Maria Mostek became the first Creston girl to qualify as an individual for the state meet all four years.

On the volleyball court, the Creston Panthers had their best season in decades, posting 20 wins.

College players shed pounds to hone body of work

AMES (AP) — Iowa State’s Georges Niang was already one of the nation’s top players.

Imagine what Niang can do now that he’s in shape.

His broken foot in last season’s NCAA tournament provided the impetus to fix perhaps the only thing keeping him from becoming an All-American: his fitness.

Niang averaged 16.7 points and 4.5 rebounds last season despite being in less than ideal shape. So Niang set about reshaping his body, and he’ll head into the season 25 pounds lighter.

“He’s the same old Georges. He just a little bit more explosive. He’s got a little bit more stamina,” Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg said.

Niang isn’t the only notable college basketball player slimmer than ever in 201415.

North Carolina’s Kennedy Meeks has shed about 50 pounds since arriving on campus as a freshman.

N.C State’s forward Beejay Anya is roughly 60 pounds lighter in his second season.

Tennessee forward Dominic Woodson has dropped nearly 25 pounds in the offseason in an effort to adjust to new coach Donnie Tyndall’s up-tempo system.

Virginia swingman Justin Anderson has lost close to 15 pounds as he looks for an expanded role this season.

Perhaps the most noticeably different player when college basketball begins next week will be Niang.

Niang, a 6-foot-7 forward, made himself a star with an array of spin moves and crafty bank shots. He’s also an excellent passer — a major plus in coach Fred Hoiberg’s space-oriented attack — and has a knack for hitting more 3s than most power forwards would even shoot.

Niang’s talents have made him invaluable to the 14thranked Cyclones, especially in late-game situations. But

Niang noticed he’d get tired as the game went on, and that led to mental mistakes and turnovers in rucial moments.

Niang said Wednesday he’s already noticed a major difference in preseason practice.

“By this time last year I felt like was a little worn o u t , ” N i a n g said.

“I feel rejuvenated and I feel a lot healthier. I took a step in the Niang right direction by helping myself out.”

The 6-9 Meeks showed up in Chapel Hill just more than a year ago at 320 pounds. He dropped to 290 by the start of last season, averaging 7.6 points and 6.1 rebounds.

Meeks is now about 270 pounds. He could very well be one of this season’s breakout stars for the sixthranked Tar Heels.

“He’s more explosive. I want him to be more aggressive thinking. That doesn’t mean foul people. Get the ball and go stronger to the basket. You’re not carrying 285 to 295 now,” North Carolina coach Roy Williams said. “I think he’s got to realize he’s worked his tail off off the court to do something that to me is a lot more difficult than changing as a basketball player.”

Anya, who is 6-9, struggled with his weight all season and yet still ranked ninth in the ACC in blocked shots in 2013-14. He’s now listed at 295 pounds and, like Meeks, could emerge as one of the ACC’s most improved players.

Anya played just under 12 minutes a game last season, a number the Wolfpack would like to see go up.

“Now that I’m in better shape, I’m more capable of going up and down the court,” Anya said. “I can go in there for 10-15 minutes stretches without them having to take me out.”

Sometimes, players get so inspired by their revamped figures that they help their teammates do the same.

UMass center Tyler Bergantino went from 280 pounds to 230 while in high school. He bulked up to 250 once he got to Amherst, but as a junior he’s trying to stay at 235 without sacrificing muscle mass.

Bergantino is trying to impart the nutritional wisdom he’s learned to freshman Rashaan Holloway, who at 6-10 has already gone from 320 to 280 pounds as he awaits clearance from the NCAA. “I already know how to do it, so I think it’s more of a practice with me. I have that practice discipline for making the right decision.

I think that’s stuff Rashaan has to learn — not by failing, but by succeeding.

Once he makes the right decisions and once he sees the results, he will continue to (make the right decisions),” Bergantino said.

Iowa State lost its top two players in Melvin Ejim, the Big 12 Player of the Year, and star guard DeAndre Kane.

The Cyclones will lean more than ever on Niang, whose reshaped body should help him meet that challenge.

“He continues to go out and do the things that make him special, and that’s making plays for his teammates and taking what the defense gives him,” Hoiberg said.

“It’s a very exciting time,” said Brad Elliott, Mount Ayr head boys track coach and an assistant coach for the football team. “I’ve never ex- Elliott perienced anything like it.”

Co-head football coach Delwyn Showalter called tonight’s quarterfinal game against Earlham the biggest football game ever played at Raider Stadium.

“When you have that wakeup call, it really ignites the fire,” Elliott said. “That wasn’t just track kids, that

was football and basketball and baseball kids on that track team. It’s been awesome to see that carry over into other activities. The experience you have knowing you can stand up to the best athletes in your league, that translates into other sports.”

Elliott said he’s looking forward to seeing hard work pay off when the Raiders step onto the football field tonight against Earlham.

“That can sometimes be a cliche statement,” he said. “But I think the reason they’re called cliches is they’re true. I saw these kids work very hard and achieve something very special for our community last spring.

For me, being a former Mount Ayr athlete and a current coach, it’s great to

be around such an outstanding group of players and coaches.”

The amazing thing, Elliott said, is that the Raiders have reloaded on the football field this year after losing a strong senior class last year.

That class included 2014 South Central Iowa Male Athlete of the Year Jacob Sobotka, who ranks second in 11-player state history in total yards (rushing plus passing) for a career with 7,542 Sobotka yards. Joel Lanning of Ankeny holds the record with 8,652 yards. (Murray’s

“But new people have filled those shoes and that’s something that is extremely rare — to be able to reload, so to speak. It’s been a fun ride so far. I hope it continues to go for a couple of more weeks.”

Herdsmanship Award goes to Highland Highlights club Highland Highlights 4-H Club was the winner of the Herdsmanship Award at the 2014 Union County Fair.

The club celebrated their title at their October meeting with a free pizza party for the 4-H’ers and Clover kids.

The club members were also awarded purple herdsmanship ribbons and a traveling plaque which is on display at the county extension office.

Herdsmanship focuses on teamwork, showing pride in exhibits, learning to pick up and take care of area, proper care and treatment of the animal (feed, water, animal

and pens clean and animal health).

Eleven 4-H clubs and two FFA chapters in Union County were judged two times each day during five days of the county fair.

The judging was done by volunteers in the community; they walked through each of the barns and scored the clubs based on a score sheet.

The Highland Highlights won with a final, average score of 17.63/20.00 for the week. The Lincoln United 4-H Club came in a close second with a final, average score of 17.62/20.00.

Ernst gets call from President Obama DES MOINES (AP) — Iowa’s new Senator-elect Joni Ernst got a congratulatory phone call from President Barack Obama this week.

A White House official said Thursday that Ernst was among the election winners Obama called Wednesday. The Republican from Red Oak beat Democrat Bruce Braley for the Senate seat long held

LOGAN (AP) — An Iowa teenager testified that when he killed his 5-year-old foster brother, he was in a fantasy world and thought he was killing a goblin.

Cody Metzker-Madsen told a western Iowa courtroom that he visits a world only he can reach whenever he plays with someone. He said he didn’t realize until afterward that what he thought was a goblin was actually his foster brother, Dominic Elkins.

“I loved the little guy, I would never hurt him,” Metzker-Madsen said during his testimony that lasted more than 40 minutes Wednesday.

Los Angeles Zoo has first hippo birth in 26 years LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Zoo has received a real treat for Halloween — the birth of its first hippopotamus in 26 years. It was a bit of trick, too, because the mother was on birth control.

The zoo says the baby was born Friday. It was somewhat of a surprise, but staff-

ers had noticed the mother hippo gained weight, which made them suspect she was pregnant.

Vets haven’t determined the sex of the new hippo.

But they say the baby appears to be doing well and is bonding with mom. Media will get to see the newborn Tuesday in its public debut.
