Borgmann appointed to city library board By KYLE WILSON
CNA managing editor kwilson@crestonnews.com
Creston Library Board has a new member. Josh Borgmann was appointed by Creston City Council Tuesday evening to fill the vacancy on the city’s library board. The seat became open in September when Calvin Huffman — who had served on the board since 2009 — officially resigned. Borgmann said he applied for the position because he wants to help make sure “our library is keeping up with the demands of the 21st century.”
“Libraries can’t just be places to store books,” Borgmann said. “I’d like to see the library have more programming that can appeal to a wider base of people.” The library board is currently discussing how and where to expand library services in Creston. The current library on Howard Street has about 8,000 square feet. The library board would like to expand or acquire a building that has 14,000 square feet. “They are trying to figure out what direction to take and I wanted to be part of that,” Borgmann said. Borgmann, 39, is currently an English instructor at Southwest-
ern Community College in Creston. He’s in his 10th year with the college. Borgmann has served on several committees at the college Borgmann over the past decade. Those include faculty union, strategic planning and curriculum committees. Borgmann was one of two applicants vying for the open seat. His first library board meeting will be Nov. 3. Borgmann will serve the remainder of Huffman’s term,
which expires July 1, 2017. In other city council news: • Creston City Council voted 6-1 Tuesday to deny a request from Jesse and Amber Giza of Creston to rezone their plot of land at 908 W. Townline St. from C-2 light commercial to C-1 commercial. The only no vote came from Marsha Wilson, ward 4 councilwoman, who urged the council to keep an open mind for upgrading the zoning for Giza’s plot of land in the future. “I know the Gizas have had some bites on possible businesses,” Wilson said. “All I ask is the council keep an open mind for
the future if and when they get a plan in place with a business out there.” • Todd Jackson, fire chief with Creston Fire Department, reminded the council it’s Fire Prevention Week and an open house pancake dinner is slated 5 to 7 p.m. tonight. Jackson added the fire department will be hosting a 5K run/walk and 1-mile firefighter hike Oct. 18. To register for that, contact the Creston Fire Station at 641-7825610. The event raises money so Creston firefighters can participate in the American Lung Association’s Fight for Air Climb scheduled in spring 2015.

with Duncan while he was contagious. Another 38 people also may have come into contact with him. The four people living in the northeast Dallas apartment where Duncan stayed have been isolated in a private residence. Everyone who potentially had contact with Duncan will be monitored for 21 days, the normal incubation period for the disease. Duncan passed an airport health screening in Liberia, where doctors took his temperature and found no other signs of Ebola symptoms. But a few days after he
arrived, he began to have a fever, headache and abdominal pain. He went to the emergency room of Texas Health Presbyterian in Dallas on Sept. 24, but was sent home. By Sept. 27, his condition had worsened. An ambulance that day took him back to the hospital, where he stayed in isolation. The hospital has changed its explanation several times about when Duncan arrived and what he said about his travel history. It has acknowledged that Duncan told them on his first visit that he came from West Africa.
