he 38th will go down as one of the best Balloon Days weekends in Creston history.

Weather cooperated Saturday and Sunday morning, allowing pilots to lift off for all three competitive flights. Saturday evening had near perfect flying conditions and was a beautiful sight for spectators.

Many parked along South Cherry Street or gravel roads nearby as 33 colorful balloons dotted the sky, flying west overhead into the airport at sunset.

“It’s weekends like this when you see the crowds and see the balloons that I realize why I keep doing this,” said Roger Lanning, who has been chairman of the Southwest Iowa Balloon Days

Jon Shelton of West Des Moines was the winning pilot at the 38th annual Balloon Days event with a total score of 5,133. Holly Pfeifer of Indianola and Scott Armstrong of Urbandale were second and third, respectively. Tyler Thompson of West Des Moines was named rookie of the year.

At the pilot’s breakfast Sunday,

Shelton thanked fellow pilot Jim Fromm, who once helped him learn the ropes.

“I always wanted to do this (win the competition) when Jim was here,” Shelton said. “I remember when I went and bought a balloon and had no idea what I was doing.

I called Jim out of nowhere, and he taught me to fly and was a great mentor. Jim, thank you very much.”

Lanning said Saturday evening’s night glow at Creston Municipal Airport was one of the top two in his time as chairman. Lanning About 20 of the 33 registered balloonists participated on the airport runway.

“2013 was really good, too, but this year ranks right up there,” Lanning said.

The date for next year’s event has already been set. It will be Sept. 16-18. Jim Gebhart of Indianola is expected to return as balloonmeister.

Other events The annual Balloon Days parade featured a marching band competition with six bands from across southwest Iowa participating. This competition was hosted

by Creston High School marching band (therefore, they were not part of the judging).

Deaths Susan Bohn Des Moines

Susan Bohn, 68, of Des Moines d i e d Thursday, Sept.

17, 2015, at Taylor House Hospice in Des Bohn Moines.

Open visitation with the family receiving friends will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St., in Des Moines. A private committal service at Graceland Cemetery will be Wednesday, Sept. 23. Pearson Family Funeral Service, 809 W. Montgomery St., in Creston is in charge of the arrangements. Susan Ann Bohn, daughter of Curtis Glendale and Grace Margaret (Vaughn) Sample, was born July 15, 1947, in Des Moines. Sue attended school in Des Moines and graduated from

East High School in 1965.

Sue worked for Des Moines General Hospital as a medical billing clerk and filing insurance claims. When Des Moines General closed, she was employed by Mercy Medical Center.

On May 14, 1982, Sue married William “Bill” Bohn in Des Moines. Sue continued working until retiring in July 2013. Sue and Bill lived in Creston from 2006 to 2014, and Sue has lived in Pleasant Hill the past 12 months.

Sue is survived by her children, Laurie (Darren) May of Beecher, Illinois, John R. (Jennifer) Blanchard, Jr. of Altoona, Sandy (Dan) Miller of Walcott, Cindy (Mark) Oliverius of Tipton, Steve (Holly) Bohn of Corning and Scott (Vickie) Bohn of Creston; 20 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brother Dan (Virginia) Sample of Mesquite, Nevada.; sisters, Nancy (Virgil) Virden of Des Moines and Janet (Steve) Marker of Evansville, Indiana. and her cat Sassy.

Sue was preceded in death by her husband William D. Bohn on Jan. 23, 2014, and her parents, Curt Sample and Grace Sample.

year.

Meanwhile, Southern Prairie YMCA’s 5K run/ walk held Saturday morning had nearly 100 participants. Cooper McDermott of Creston was the top male finisher in a time of 18:58.

Samantha Anderson was the top female finisher in a time of 21:17. (See full results and photos on page 5A)

Many accidents to children on the farm occur when a child is doing something that is beyond his or her mental, physical or emotional ability. New CPR machine purchased for GRMC paramedics

That’s how a person does CPR, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, when another person can’t breathe. Paramedics at Greater Regional Medical Center now have a LUCAS CPR machine to do that for them while they care for any patients in other ways.

“A LUCAS CPR machine is a device that does the compressions for the responders,” said Ryan Burwell, EMS manager at Greater Regional Medical Center. “This one is made by

Physio Control. It does the compressions, and it does them consistently, so you get the proper blood flow to the heart and the lungs.”

Burwell, who has been in emergency medical services for 17 years, spent time in Clarinda and Shenandoah before joining the team at Greater Regional.

He has been at the hospital for 15 years.

LUCAS

The machine has two parts: the board that goes behind the patient, and the top half where the piston and buttons are. The two connect, and must be separated manually.

“It has this nice piston design,

so you can set your depth per person,” Burwell said. “With this, you can set it either to your 30 to 2 compressions, or continuous compressions.”

Currently, compressions should be done 30 times to a patient, then two breaths should be given for an adult in any form of cardiac arrest, like a heart attack. Children and infants should have 15 compressions before breaths are given. Compressions should be approximately one and a-half to two inches in depth.

MCINTIRE, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa farmer who was running unopposed for his local school board failed to earn any votes — not even his own — but he’ll probably still get the job.

Randy Richardson, 42, didn’t find time to vote for himself between his full-time maintenance job at a bean processing plant in Riceville and his chores on his farm near McIntire, The Des Moines Register reported.

Richardson was recruited to run by school staff, and though he said he’s “run paper thin the way it is,” he agreed because he has two kids in the district.

Neighbor Jessie Miller said there wasn’t any key issue to drive her to vote in the school board race.

“I would’ve voted for him!” she said. “He’s an awesome guy.”

Julie Ackley is the acting officer in charge until a new postmaster is named. Ackley said it can take between 30 and 90 days for a new postmaster to be named.

Wednesday night will be a night of wild animals, magic tricks and feats of derring-do under the big top as the Carson & Barnes Circus returns to Creston for two shows.

The self-proclaimed “world’s biggest big-top show” will perform at 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. at Creston Elementary/Middle School, 805 Academic Ave. The circus last visited Creston in August 2013.

KSIB Radio will be sponsoring the event. Chad Rieck, KSIB general manager, said the show has experienced great local reception in the past, which is why it’s back so soon.

“They like to go where people want to go see them, and we’ve always had a strong history in this area of people wanting to go,” he said. “Peo- Rieck ple like it, especially the fact that they still bring the live animals.

Some of the live circuses have gone away from that.”

Rieck said the show’s timing, right before Fourth of July weekend, should be good for many families.

“We don’t have the carnival anymore, so this will be kind of a nice deal to have for the kids pre-Fourth of July,” he said.

The shows will last about two hours each. A pre-show midway will allow circusgoers to see and touch exotic animals and, for a small charge, take an elephant or pony ride. Rieck said the public is invited to watch the unloading and setting up of the tent, which he said normally begins around 8:30 or 9 a.m. the morning of the show. KSIB will provide updates throughout the day to let listeners know what is going on.

Roots of the Carson & Barnes Circus go back to 1937, when Obert Miller, current Carson & Barnes co-owner Barbara Byrd’s grandfather, began a dog and pony show in Kansas.

Today, the Carson & Barnes circus travels eight and one-

half months out of the year to more than 200 locations around the United States.

Byrd said that from motorcycles to pirates to the beloved performing elephants, there’s an act in this year’s show for everyone.

“We have a fantastic show that really appeals to all generations,” she said. “It’s a real unique opportunity to just come out and have a good, old-fashioned fun time at the circus.”

Packers win GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Aaron Rodgers threw for two touchdowns and the Green Bay Packers outlasted the Seattle Seahawks for a 2717 win Sunday night in a bruising, physical rematch of last season’s NFC title game.

Rodgers orchestrated a 10-play, 80-yard scoring drive, capped by a 5-yard scoring pass to Richard Rodgers. A 2-point conversion made it 24-17 with 9:28 left.

Jayrone Elliott made a lunging, one-handed interception of a short pass from Russell Wilson with 6:50 left, one of the rare mistakes in the second half for Seattle’s dual-threat quarterback.

The Packers (2-0) cashed in with one of Mason Crosby’s four field goals on the night for a 10-point lead with 2 minutes remaining.

Creston/O-M started its game-winning drive from its own 28-yard line with 6:06 remaining after Whipple connected with Nick Schroeder for a 5-yard touchdown and then ran for the 2-point conversion to put the Rams up 32-29.

Area football Pleasantville 53, Nodaway Valley 0 GREENFIELD — Friday’s homecoming game for Nodaway Valley turned into a blowout victory for Pleasantville, as the Trojans rolled up 29 first-quarter points on their way to a 53-0 win over the host Wolverines.

Senior quarterback Zeb Adreon accounted for 211 total yards and four touchdowns in the win for Pleasantville, which improved to 4-0 for the season and 2-0 in Class A District 8.

Nodaway Valley managed just 144 total yards of offense as a team, falling to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in District 8 play.

“We struggled early with mistakes and could not match the speed of a very good Pleasantville team,” Nodaway Valley head coach Steve Shantz said. “Brennen Weiland gained 122 yards rushing. He ran the ball hard all night.”

Weiland was the highlight for the Wolverines in

teh loss, averaging 6.1 yards per carry on 20 attempts.

Defensively, senior Ryan Weiland Jensen led the way for Nodaway Valley with eight tackles. Wes Davis, Thomas Britten and Dylan Cornelison each finished with five tackles.

Pleasantville averaged 7.2 yards per carry running the ball, finishing with 292 rushing yards.

“We will make some personnel changes,” Shantz said. “We put our players in places they were not able to be successful and will look to put them in positions to have that success. We did play hard for the full 48 minutes and we will build on that and learn from our mistakes.”

RED OAK — A tiebreaker knocked Creston out of semifinal contention at the balanced Red Oak Invitational volleyball tournament Saturday.

Tri-Center, ranked No. 7 in Class 2A, along with Clarinda and Creston each went 2-1 in the black pool in preliminary play Saturday. The scoring margin tiebreaker declared Tri-Center as the pool winner and a semifinal matchup with orange pool runner-up Red Oak, while Clarinda earned the second spot in the semifinal against orange pool winner Treynor.

Red Oak beat Tri-Center and then fell in the finals to Treynor, which capped an unbeaten day with a threeset victory over the Tigers.

“We started out a little slow against Tri-Center and didn’t play real well against a pretty good team,” said Creston coach Polly Luther.

“Against Clarinda, we lost the first game and then came back to win the next two and played pretty well. Sydney Dunphy came alive and made a huge difference.

“Our kids played hard, they fought hard the entire game for four quarters,” Morrison said. “Super proud of that. It’s a good football team and to finish that way and get a win, I’m proud of that.”

Lenox 60, Sidney 18 LENOX — A 32-point third quarter blew open Lenox’s 60-18 homecoming victory over Sidney Friday in the Tigers’ first home game of 2015.

and 2-0 in Eight-Man District 8, held a 14-6 lead after one quarter and stretched it to 28-12 at halftime.

In the third period, Jared Hensley scored three touchdowns on a 40-yard pass play and two runs, Sam Donaldson added another r u s h i n g Hensley TD and the Tiger defense scored a safety.

That made it 60-12 and the fourth quarter moved quickly under the mercy rule running clock.

For the night, Hensley scored four rushing touchdowns on 80 yards along with the TD catch from Carson Cline. Donaldson ran for 64 yards and two scores.

Cline ran for a team-high 84 yards and a touchdown while also completing 5-of10 passes for 73 yards.

Defensively, Leevi Marshall had three solo tackles, eight total tackles and a sack. Josh Mitchell and Hensley each made seven stops. Donaldson and Spencer Brown had quarterback sacks.

“We controlled the line on both sides of hte ball,” said Lenox coach Allen Dukes. “We took advantage of big defensive turnovers and a short field. Our defense took them out of their game. Offensively we were pretty balanced. The O-line opened holes to spring our backs. We still have to cut down on our penalties.”

Glidden-Ralston 43, East Union 8 AFTON — East Union gave Eight-Man fourthranked Glidden-Ralston its toughest test of the season here Friday, but the Eagles still fell in the District 7 contest, 43-8.

“I think we gave them a pretty good run for their money in the first quarter and a half,” East Union cocoach James Hardy said.

“The score doesn’t indicate how close it was on the field in terms of physicality. That’s their lowest total this year, scoring wise. That’s the first time they’ve gone four quarters.”

East Union trailed just 7-0 after one quarter of play and squandered a chance to

tie the game at 7-7, turning the ball over on downs at the Glidden-Ralston 10-yard line with an incomplete pass.

Glidden-Ralston led 28-0 at halftime, before putting the game away in the second half by building a 43-0 lead.

East Union finally scored at the end of the game with a Mike Ward touchdown run. Ward finished the game with 81 yards and one touchdown on 20 carries.

Defensively, he recorded 12 tack- Seales les. Kyle Seales led the team with 14 stops.

“Our defense shined through on Friday night. It’s the offense that still sputters at times,” Hardy said. “People are beginning to pick up what we’re doing. We’re going to have to make some adjustments offensively to those sorts of things. We’ll continue to work on what we’re doing and go from there.”
