DIAGONAL — As summer nears its end, the community of Diagonal is celebrating the way they do best at their annual Labor

Day celebration. The Diagonal Lions Labor Day Celebration is slated to start with a fun run 8 a.m. Sunday followed by an outdoor church service 9 a.m. at the north gym, 403 W. 2nd St., in Diagonal. Festivities will continue throughout the threeday weekend. Gina Knox of Diagonal said the celebration is a fun way to end the summer season. “It’s a community event that we’ve had for several years,” Knox said. “It’s a good, family

gathering with activities for everybody.”

Activities

Most of the activities at Diagonal’s Labor Day celebration are free and all are family friendly. The most popular event are the tractor pulls 1 p.m Sunday and the “mammoth” parade, themed “Made in America,” 10 a.m. Monday. “It’s always been a tradition since I was a kid,” Knox said. Of the annual celebration, what Knox said she enjoys most are the

remarks about each float made by the commentators and the loudness of the tractor pulls. Brad Bentley, 2013 president of the Diagonal Lions Club, said the Sunday night tractor pull, which draws hundreds of spectators to Diagonal’s main street, is one of the largest crowds he has experienced. “The Sunday night tractor pull is when you see the real big stuff,” Bentley said. “That’s when you see your modified tractors and pickups. Your bigger equipment that

is running a lot more horse power. Four hundred to 500 horse power easily.” Bentley said Sunday night’s tractor pull attracts participants from as far as Des Moines and Winterset. A local tractor pull is scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday. Other activities throughout the weekend include 3 on 3 basketball, car and motorcycle shows, micro miniature tractor pull, burnout Please see LABOR DAY, Page 12

Independent Soggy field day still candidate provides research insight likes his odds for U.S. Senate By JAKE WADDINGHAM

GREENFIELD — The recent rains did not allow visitors to tour the NeelyKinyon Research Farm during the field day Tuesday, but presenters were still able to give a wide variety of detailed research findings. Farm Superintendent Bernie Havlovic said the site had received about nine inches of rain for the month of August, not including the rain totals from Wednesday and today. “We have had enough rain to get us through this growing season,” Havlovic said. “Any rain from here on out might be more significant for next year.” Havlovic said he is hopeful September will be dry so the corn and soybean crop can mature faster. He estimated the harvest could be delayed five to seven days because of the soggy and cool August conditions. Presenters from Iowa State University were still able to give detailed presentations of the research results on the 160acre farm from the past 17 years using handouts and describing the 2014 growing season.

Rick Stewart, independent candidate for U.S. Senate, is visiting all 99 counties in Iowa before November to explain why he’s a better option than his competitors Rep. Joni Ernst and Dem. Bruce Braley. The 63-year-old Stewart stopped in Red Oak and Creston Wednesday. “I’d give myself 5 to 10 percent chance of winning,” Stewart said. “I like those odds. I like my chances because it’s an open seat, Iowa is a pink state, we have two fairly weak candidates — I mean neither is a superstar — and right now they are split in the polls. I’m just the guy in the middle who can make 80 Stewart percent of Iowans happy.” Stewart — a Cedar Rapids native — described himself as a common-sense moderate. His policy ideas are eliminating federal unfunded liabilities, stopping the drug war and eliminating farm subsidies. Also — regarding illegal immigration — Stewart said the problem could be solved by selling permits for immigrants to live and work in the United States for $50,000. Stewart is a graduate of Coe College in Cedar Rapids

Iowa State University’s Gerald De La Fuente shows a corn stalk while describing corn breeding research. He said their research works to find beneficial traits without getting the “trash” genetics.
