Paint the town: Paint Creston program applications available By BAILEY POOLMAN
CNA staff reporter bpoolman@crestonnews.com
Now that the sun is shining and flowers are blooming, it’s time for spring cleaning. One way to spruce up your home is to paint the siding. Paint Creston is a program that allows homeowners to update the exterior of their homes by applying for the program and slathering on the paint themselves. “It’s grant money that the chamber re-
ceives to improve Creston and the community,” said Ellen Gerharz, Creston Chamber of Commerce director. “For five years we’ve thought it was important to buy paint for occupied homes in Creston rather than letting them fall into further disrepair.” Gerharz Those interested in the program can apply online at www.crestoniowachamber.com, or pick up an application
at the chamber, located at 208 W. Taylor St. Applications must be turned in by 5 p.m. May 8, and can be mailed directly to the chamber office at P.O. Box 471, Creston, IA 50801. With the grant money, paint and supplies will be purchased for the homeowner to use. However, if the house is not painted by Oct. 9, the homeowner is required to reimburse the chamber for the grant money used. “Because of the number of homes that needed some tender loving care, ... we felt we could impact more people by doing the
Paint Creston program,” Gerharz said. “I do know, over the five years that we’ve done it, several of the homeowners who have taken the time and painted their homes, their neighbors have been very appreciative.” A concern people have, though, is whether the paint will increase the assessed value of their home. According to Union County Assessor Theresa Pudenz, that is not true. “It’s not necessarily going to add value Please see PAINT THE TOWN, Page 2A

You can only park in uptown Creston for two hours during the hours of 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. That’s been the city ordinance for more than 10 years, but in case you forget city officials will soon be installing two-hour parking signs as a reminder. This issue of uptown parking came forward earlier this month when Janelle Kretz, owner of The Old Market in uptown Creston, told the council her customers were having difficulty finding a parking spot near her business. “On one occasion some elderly customers of mine had to park by Harry Walters business and walk,” Kretz said. “Eventually, it comes down to — if ■ Those they can’t park close parking longer enough — they just aren’t going to stop and than two hours that hurts uptown busi- in uptown ness.” Creston during The problem: Kretz said she’s noticed some the hours of renters who live in up- 9 a.m. and 6 town leave their cars p.m. Monday parked in the uptown area for seven or eight through hours at a time during Saturday will daytime business hours. be ticketed. Patrons will be ticketed by law enforcement if they park longer than two hours. “We will see how this works,” Wilson said, “and hopefully everyone realizes you can only park two hours instead of four days in some cases.” The signs will be ordered and installed within a month. Tickets for parking longer than two hours are $25. Mike Taylor, city administrator, mentioned there is a city-owned parking lot on the corner of Elm and West Adams streets (directly south of The Lobby) that is available to uptown apartment dwellers. Taylor said that parking lot doesn’t have any parking regulations and vehicles will not be ticketed there. “Please share that information,” Taylor said. Please see CITY COUNCIL, Page 2A
