The 2016 annual Jam the Gym event will feature a new dance coach and new routines, including a mother-daughter dance.

Jam the Gym, the main event of TWIRP BIRP week at Creston High School (CHS), kicks off at 6 p.m. Friday in the school gymnasium.

“One of the new things is the Salt and Pepper sponsor, Kalian Smith,” said Peg Eblen, CHS teacher. “She teaches dance at Leslie’s (Dance Emporium), and this is her first year.”

Eblen said while it will mostly be Peppers dances, there will also be a co-ed dance, seniors’ dance, two routines by the Little Peppers and Little Salts and a few dances by the Southwestern Community College Dazzlers.

After the dance routines, the TWIRP BIRP king will be crowned, and then the TWIRP BIRP dance will be held from 9 to 11 p.m. in the CHS Eblen commons.

Tickets for Jam the Gym are $5 and may be purchased in advance in the CHS main office or at the door. Proceeds go toward the Salt and Pepper dance teams.

“The Peppers have had a long tradition of going to state competitions and doing well, and for a number of years, they’ve had camps for younger kids, so I think that has increased involvement in Jam the Gym,” Eblen said. “The Peppers’ performances are high-energy and classy, so it’s pretty entertaining.”

In her first year as coach for the Salts and Peppers dance teams, Smith said she is most looking forward to “seeing the dancers performing on the floor with giant smiles.”

Iowa sheriff resigns amid allegations DES MOINES (AP) — A longtime sheriff in southern Iowa has resigned amid allegations that he fostered a hostile work environment by sexually harassing his employees and others with whom he came in contact.

Decatur County Sheriff Bert Muir, 66, resigned Friday, the Des Moines Register reported.

The complete RAGBRAI route from Shenandoah to Creston on July 25 was released this morning.

The route encompasses 75.2 miles and 3,994 feet of climb. Creston is the highest elevation on the route. This is the longest ride of the week with the most climb, not including the optional Karras Loop Day.

Muir denied the claims and said he looks forward to a retirement so he can have more time to ride his motorcycle. He said the county board’s move to have him removed from office was politically motivated, but that fighting it in court would only tarnish his reputation and the sheriff’s office.

Former first lady Reagan dies at 94 LOS ANGELES (AP) — Nancy Reagan, the helpmate, backstage adviser and fierce protector of Ronald Reagan in his journey from actor to president — and finally during his 10-year battle with Alzheimer’s disease — has died. She was 94.

The former first lady died Sunday at her home in the Bel-Air section of Los Angeles of congestive heart failure, assistant Allison Borio told The Associated Press.

Her best-known project as first lady was the “Just Say No” campaign to help kids and teens stay off drugs.

When she swept into the White House in 1981, the former Hollywood actress partial to designer gowns and pricey china was widely dismissed as a pre-feminist throwback, concerned only with fashion, decorating and entertaining. By the time she moved out eight years later, Mrs. Reagan was fending off accusations that she was a behind-thescenes “dragon lady” wielding unchecked power over the Reagan administration — and doing it based on astrology to boot.

All along she maintained that her only mission was to back her “Ronnie” and

strengthen his presidency.

Mrs. Reagan carried that charge through the rest of her days. She served as a full-time caretaker as Alzheimer’s melted away her husband’s memory. After his death in June 2004 she dedicated herself to tending his legacy, especially at his presidential library in California, where he had served as governor.

She also championed Alzheimer’s patients, raising millions of dollars for research and breaking with fellow conservative Republicans to advocate for stem cell studies. Her dignity and perseverance in these postWhite House roles helped smooth over the public’s fickle perceptions of the former first lady.

In a statement Sunday, U.S. President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama spoke of the Reagan’s journey with Alzheimer’s disease.

“Later, in her long goodbye with President Reagan, she became a voice on behalf of millions of families going through the depleting, aching reality of Alzheimer’s, and took on a new role, as advocate, on behalf of treatments that hold the potential and the promise to improve and save lives,” the Obama’s said.

Des Moines attorney Thomas Miller filed a fourpage petition Friday in Decatur County District Court asking a judge to remove Muir from office for what was described as a pattern of sexual harassment.

Individual affidavits containing full details were sealed by a judge, but the petition accuses Muir of assaulting multiple employees through hair-pulling, unwanted hugging, pinching, squeezing and fondling.

The sheriff once “pulled a female employee’s face toward his crotch,” the petition said.

The petition similarly accuses Muir of harassing courthouse workers, witnesses and crime victims.

It also says Muir married a co-worker after being elected sheriff and illegally promoted her and increased her salary. Muir countered that the county attorney’s office advised him that pro-

moting his wife would not pose a legal problem.

“It’s apparent to me that it’s a matter that’s been brewing for some time,” Miller said. “It’s my strong impression that the problem was worsening and the matter was coming to a head in recent months or weeks.”

A judge scheduled a March 21 hearing for Muir and his accusers to present their cases, but Muir’s resignation brought a likely end to the case, Miller said. Muir is not facing any civil lawsuits or criminal charges.

The judge’s order bars the former sheriff from having any contact with anybody who filed an affidavit in the case.

Muir said he believes the petition was prompted by false complaints from four to six people with a political agenda against him, but he declined to name those people.

City of Lorimor employees reported someone entered the Lorimor Fire Department and took its red 2004 Ford F350 brush fire truck sometime between Feb. 26 and Friday at 411 Minnesota Ave. in Lorimor.

Loss estimate is $15,000.

According to Afton Police Department, the truck has Lorimor Fire Department decals on the side and a water tank and hose reel in the back.

No license plate information is available at this time.

(AP) Peyton Manning surveyed the landscape of his brilliant career and called one last audible.

He’s retiring a champion.

A month after Denver’s triumph in Super Bowl 50, Manning informed John Elway he is following his lead and riding off into that orange sunset just like the Broncos’ boss did 17 years ago after winning his second Super Bowl.

Just shy of 40, Manning will forgo $19 million and a 19th season in the NFL, where he served as both a throwback and a transformer during a glittering career bookmarked by an unprecedented five MVP awards and dozens of passing records.

“Peyton was a player that guys wanted to play with,” Elway said. “That made us better as a team and I’m thrilled that we were able to win a championship in his final year.”

The Broncos scheduled a news conference for 11 a.m. Monday.

Lenox senior Spencer Brown and Nodaway Valley senior Jackson Lamb were among seven unanimous selections to the Pride of Iowa’s all-conference boys basketball teams released last week.

Joining Brown and Jackson on the first team was Lenox junior sharpshooter Kaleb Anderson and Mount Ayr senior Rhett Murphy.

Other unanimous selections included Bedford’s Colt Scott, Wayne’s Trent Moore, Interstate 35 senior Jaylan White and Central Decatur seniors Peyton Pedersen and Nick Durrell.

Brown ranked fifth in the Pride of Iowa Conference, averaging 22.5 points per game for the conf e r e n c e Brown champion Tigers. He also led the state with 431 total rebounds for a 19.6 per-game average, while ranking third statewide with 116 blocked shots.

Anderson ranks sixth in the state all classes with 81 made 3-pointers on the sea-

son, shooting 43.8 percent from behind the arc. The Lenox junior averaged 12.8 points per game, w h i l e dishing 20 assists and collecting Anderson 32 steals on the season.

Lamb ranks second in the state all classes, averaging 26.5 points per game and leads the state in overall s c o r i n g Lamb with 663 points.

The Nodaway Valley senior shot 48.0 percent from the floor and 37.0 percent from behind the 3-point arc on 80 made treys.

In addition, Lamb ranked fourth in the Pride of Iowa Conference, averaging 9.2 rebounds per game. He also ranked third in assists with 132 and third in steals with 74.

Murphy led a balanced Mount Ayr team in scoring at 12.3 points per game, shooting 56.8 percent from the floor. He was second on the team with 7.2 rebounds

per game and had 16 assists and 10 steals for the year.

As a whole, the Pride Murphy of Iowa Conference featured seven players who averaged 20.5 points per game or better, with all seven earning firstteam honors.

Nodaway Valley seniors Nate Venteicher and Sam Marnin, Lenox junior Dawson Tullberg, East Union junior Gabe Nixon and Southwest Venteicher Valley sophomore Chance Cobb were unanimous selections to the Pride of Iowa Conference second team.

Tullberg ranks second in the state all classes with 207 assists, while ave r a g i n g Tullberg 8.5 points and 4.8 rebounds per game.

Stunning loss LOS ANGELES (AP) Even a team that dominates the way the Golden State Warriors have this season is bound to stumble every now and then.

They tossed out a clunker against the Los Angeles Lakers, losing 112-95 on Sunday while shooting a season-worst 13 percent from 3-point range.

Sports briefs Dutch fall ST. PAUL, Minn. — The postseason run came to an end for the Central College men’s basketball team Friday night, as the Dutch fell on the road 78-66 against St. Thomas (Minn.) in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Central (19-10) was able to give the No. 7 Tommies (25-3) all they wanted and more for much of the game, including going into halftime squared at 30-30. Sporting a senior-laden roster, St. Thomas used its size to take over in the second half, outrebounding the Dutch 43-28.

Junior Colby Taylor of Creston had his 12th double-double for the Dutch with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Junior guard Pete Walker of Taylor Red Oak finished with 16 points, playing just 23 minutes because of foul trouble.

With no seniors on this year’s team, Central coach Craig Douma said the lockerroom had a unique vibe as the entire roster will return next season.

“I’ve never had it as a coach where you’re not losing anybody,” he said. “Even though we lost, we’re all pretty excited about next year. We’re going to be that team that’s pretty tough to reckon with.

Elite team DES MOINES — Creston/O-M junior Chase Shiltz was named to the Des Moines Register’s All-Iowa Elite Wrestling Team Sunday at 170 pounds.

The two-time state champ, who was a state runner-up as a freshman, will be honored at the All-Iowa banquet June 18 at the Iowa E v e n t s Shiltz Center.

Shiltz was 45-1 with 31 pins and bonus points in 43 of his 46 matches.

His only loss was in Kansas City to a nationally-ranked wrestler from Missouri in his second appearance of the season coming off a broken hand suffered during the football playoffs.

Panther teammate Wyatt Thompson, senior 138-pounder who dropped an overtime decision in the state finals, was

one of seven wrestlers receiving honorable mention in the all-class recognition.

The Register’s 160-pounder on the Elite Team is Interstate 35 champion Sal Arzani (511).

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Wes Washpun was given the chance to send Northern Iowa to the NCAA Tournament. He had to wait a second before he knew he had done it.

Washpun hit a jumper from the top of the key that bounced high off the back of the rim and fell in at the Washpun buzzer to give the Panthers a 56-54 victory over Evansville on Sunday in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament championship game.

Northern Iowa coach Ben Jacobson had a timeout but didn’t call it. Instead letting Washpun decide the game He stood alone, dribbling the ball until he started for the basket, made a crossover move, clearing just enough space for the straight-on jumper.

“That’s what he allowed me to take so that’s what I had to take,” Washpun said of the defense. “Not a better feeling in the world.”

The Panthers led by as many as 17 points before giving up the lead in the final minutes.

“We gave up the momentum and then we had to find a way to win,” Jacobson said.

“A lot of times, that Jacobson doesn’t happen.

Usually, you don’t beat them.”

Washpun, named the tournament MVP, made two big shots in the final minute, also scoring from the key to put Northern Iowa up by two with 50 seconds to go.

They dispatched Evansville (25-9) for the third time this season — by a total of seven points.

Famous Northern Iowa alum Kurt Warner gave the team motivational support via texts.

“He just kept telling us to live in the moment,” said Jeremy Morgan, who added 14 points and four blocks.

Balentine had 20 points and Jaylon Brown added 18 for Evansville, which hasn’t made it to the NCAA Tournament since 1999. The conference tourney winner gets an automatic bid and Wichita State could get an at-large bid.

Northern Iowa has won the tournament four of the last eight years, and enters the NCAA Tournament having won 12 of 13 games.

“Coach Jacobson told us it’s harder to do what we did this year, when you go through a little bit of a rut and pick yourself back up,” Washpun said of the Panthers who started 2-6 in conference play.

The Panthers twice led by 17 points, late in the first half and in the opening minute after the break when Morgan’s 3-pointer made it 35-18.

Brown and Balentine had big second halves for Evansville, scoring 16 and 15 points. Evansville twice led by a point in the closing minutes.

“We just played a lot harder, we had better rhythm and I just thought we played faster,” coach Marty Simmons said.

Latham, left, and Maya Struhar of Creston performed over the weekend with the All-Iowa Honor Dance Team at the Girls State Basketball Tournament in Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

Struhar and Madison Hance of Creston were selected to be among 50 dancers performing a pregame patriotic salute routine before the Class 1A championship game Friday and 3A title game Saturday night. Hance, however, had a conflict with the CHS all-school play and could not perform. Latham was among 224 dancers from 100 Iowa high school performing a medley of songs with the theme of “Work” at halftime of the Class 3A game Saturday. Also on the honor dance team were Danica Clayton and Allyson Phillippi of Nodaway Valley and Haylea England of Mount Ayr.
