Were they bees or wasps? According to Andre Copeland, insect expert and interpretive program manager at the Brookfield Zoo, the stings could have come from either bees or wasps. The tell-tale sign, Copeland said, was whether stingers were found in the victims. “They could have been honey bees or yellow jackets,” Copeland said. If stingers were found, Copeland said the culprit was the honey bee, if not, they were likely yellow jackets, which he said were often confused. Honey bees can only sting once, and then they die. Yellow jackets, on the other hand, can sting multiple times and are more aggressive.

10 times in all, he said. “It was chaos,” Swiatnicki said. “I’ve been stung before, but not chased by a swarm like that.” Swiatnicki said he was concerned about getting his daughter inside and then getting out of the area and could not tell if other students or parents were stung. Hollywood Principal Kurt Preble said about 10 people were stung at the school that morning, which included students, parents and staff. Preble himself was stung twice in the head. “I couldn’t tell how many [bees], but a lot,” Preble said. Preble said office staff treated those stung and the school’s

nurse followed up later. Preble said no allergic reactions were reported and parents who were not with their children at the time of the incident were contacted by the school. A hive was located in a bush along the sidewalk near the school and removed by school maintenance staff by 9 a.m., Preble said. Staff closed the school entrance and a portion of the sidewalk near the hive and pesticide was sprayed. Preble said staff will continue to check the area. “We have a great staff and the whole thing was really well managed,” Preble said.

BROOKFIELD – A swarm of bees attacked a group of students, parents and staff as they were lined up around 8 a.m. Aug. 27 waiting to enter Hollywood Elementary School on their first day back. Parent Steven Swiatnicki said he was dropping off his 6-year-old daughter for her first day of first grade that morning when they were attacked by bees. “I was kneeling down ... and all of sudden I felt something on my ear,” Swiatnicki said. “People started running and there were bees everywhere. According to Swiatnicki, students were lined up along an exterior wall of the school’s gym waiting to go into the school when the swarm struck. He said he believed the bees came from tall grass or plants that were located near the building. Swiatnicki said he grabbed his daughter and protected her as he ran into the school. He then ran back outside to his car. In all, he was stung eight times, he said, on his back, arms and head. The girl’s mother also was stung on the ear, legs and stomach, about

Copeland said there are as many as 130,000 species of insects in the bee, wasp and ant family. Both bees and wasps will swarm if they feel their hive is under attack. They are set off by hairy animals, dark colors and exhaled carbon dioxide. “That because it’s often bears,” Copeland said. If they were bees, Copeland said it’s important to keep in mind that they are often docile animals and are incredibly important to our world and much of what we eat. “Three out of every four bites of food we eat are dependent on bees for pollination,” Copeland said.

Western Springs woman wins new roof in Brookfield contest “We’ve been here for almost 30 years and the community around us has supported us. So in these economic hard times, we wanted to support them because we know there are a lot of families in need.”

By KRISTIN PEDICINI kpedicini@shawmedia.com WESTERN SPRINGS – A Western Springs resident was recently named the winner of Licitra Roofing’s No Roof Left Behind contest. Bonnie Krozel, who was originally nominated by the Treasure Chest Foundation, received the most votes among the final four contestants in the competition. She said a call came in from Jonathan Licitra, owner of Brookfield-based Licitra Roofing, letting her know she’d won. “I never thought I’d go this far,” Krozel said. “I broke out in sweats, I thought I was going to have a heart attack. I just couldn’t believe it.” Krozel is a very deserving winner, according to Licitra. “I was happy to see she won … she’s just a great lady and very giving to others,” Licitra said. “It’s exactly what the program is all about; helping someone [who] deserved it.” Krozel said she wouldn’t have gotten this far if not for

Jonathan Licitra Licitra Roofing owner the foundation and Maggie Stepuszek, who helped Krozel become involved with the foundation. “It’s is a blessing,” Krozel said. “I’m truly thankful to all my friends, family and everyone who voted for me.” Moving forward, Krozel is set to receive her new roof at the end of September. Licitra said the two-day construction will begin Sept. 29, with a celebration planned for the final day of work, Sept. 30. Little Joe’s Beef, of Countryside, has donated lunch for crew and guests at the celebration, according to Licitra. After launching its No Roof

Left Behind program in January, Licitra Roofing narrowed down the contestants to just four finalists in July before asking the public to make the final decision. The Brookfield roofing company sponsored the local No Roof Left Behind program to give back to the community, according to Licitra. “We’ve been here for almost 30 years and the community around us has supported us. So in these economic hard times, we wanted to support them because we know there are a lot of families in need,” Licitra said. Through the contest, Lic-

itra offered one family in the area a free roof ranging from $10,000 to $15,000. The No Roof Left Behind contest, which began with 30 contestants, included runner-up families Jack and Cyndi Teel, of Brookfield; The Frisbie family of Countryside; and Westchester residents Scott and Sharon Galloway. Licitra said that, while he wished all four finalists could have received new roofs, the company could only afford to give one new roof this year. “We could help one family this year and that’s great,”

Licitra said. “But maybe in the future we could do two.” Although Licitra couldn’t provide new roofs for the runner ups, he’s hoping local businesses will reach out and lend a hand. “These other three families are really in need,” Licitra said. “People just need the awareness and they’ll step up. “If we do it again, the runners up can nominate themselves or get nominated again,” Licitra said. “But for now we’re looking for local sponsors to step up and help out.”

BROOKFIELD – The village of Brookfield announced Aug. 26 Village Manager Riccardo Ginex submitted his resignation to take on the same role at the village of Oak Brook. Ginex’s resignation will be effective Oct. 4. Ginex was hired by the village of Brookfield in 2005 and has 28 years of local government experience, according to a news release from the village. As village manager, Ginex was credited with assisting in the implementation of two tax increment financing areas in the village, several street projects, park grants, staffing reductions and improved collective bargaining relationships with unionized employees, stated the release. “I am leaving a wonderful community that has been very good to me,” Ginex said in a statement. “Oak Brook presents new challenges and I look forward to working with their village board and their staff. I truly enjoyed my time here in Brookfield.”

Village President Kit Ketchmark thanked Ginex for his service to the village in the release. “On behalf of the village board Riccardo and staff, I would Ginex like to wish Rick Ginex continued success in his new role as the village manager of Oak Brook,” Ketchmark said in a statement. “[Ginex] helped Brookfield and its Village Board steer through some challenging times over the past nine years, a period during which he became one of the longest tenured village managers in the area, as well as one of the most respected amongst his peers.” The village has not yet released specific information about who will take Ginex’s place or when a search will begin for his replacement. The village of Oak Brook will vote to approve a contract with Ginex at their Sept. 9 board meeting. He will officially start Oct. 9.

BROOKFIELD – Brookfield police officers were called to a stopped Metra train on the inbound track at the village’s Prairie Avenue station at 4:47 p.m. Aug. 26, according to a police report. Metra personnel contacted Brookfield police and said conductors needed help removing a man from the train. An officer was flagged down by a conductor at the station and police boarded the train. An officer was directed to a

train car at the end of the train and was told the man had allegedly battered a female rider on the train and a train conductor. When police arrived, they found the man being held down by several conductors on the train. Brookfield police officers told the man he would be let up but needed to followed their directions and walk off the train. Police said the man, later identified as John D. Carey, 49, of Evanston appeared highly intoxicated and uttered several profanities directed toward a conductor as

he was exiting the train. He then attempted to push the conductor and was placed in handcuffs and removed by police. Police held Carey on the train platform to await the arrival of Burlington Northern Santa Fe police. While being held on the platform, Carey allegedly tried to get up and swore at officers before kicking one of them in the stomach and threatening them. BNSF police said they would take Carey to the McCook Police Department for processing and were told the

Brookfield police officer who was struck would also sign a complaint for battery. The officer declined medical attention. The investigation and arrest were then turned over to BNSF police. Carey was charged with two counts of battery to a law enforcement officer for kicking the Brookfield police officer and later striking a BNSF police officer, according to a spokesman for BNSF police. He was additionally charged with one count of battery for striking the train conductor.

Local real estate numbers for July show little change from last summer By MATTHEW HENDRICKSON mhendrickson@shawmedia.com New data provided by the Mainstreet Organization of Realtors shows little change from a summer trend that shows mixed results for home sales in Riverside, North Riverside, Brookfield and Lyons. In a comparison of homes sold in July 2014 and in July 2013, Riverside was dead even with a total of 12 homes sold in both years in July. While the number of homes sold did not change, the median sales price was down 34 percent in July this year over July 2013. The median price

of a home selling in Riverside was $315,000 in July and was $477,500 in July 2013. Across the area, some towns saw increased sales but also drops in median price. Lyons, for example, saw the number of homes sold increase slightly from seven sold in July 2013 to nine sold in July. Like Riverside, the median sales price decreased by 14.5 percent, dropping to $113,000 in July compared to $189,000 in July 2013. However, in data provided comparing June sales this year to June 2013 sales, the opposite was true. Data on North Riverside painted the opposite picture,

with the number of homes sold down nearly 50 percent but the median sales price of the homes that did sell increasing by 12.2 percent. A total of nine homes were sold in North Riverside in July, compared to 16 sold in July 2013. Brookfield presented the most stable July numbers. One additional home – with 25 sold in July – was sold during the same month last year. The mixed bag of real estate figures, which showed both increases and decreases in all markets, continued a summer trend of little overall change in the area as a whole.

The plants at Shawn Odneal’s hydroponic gardening shop, Root 66, 8863 Burlington Ave. in Brookfield, are literally climbing up the walls. But that’s just the point. Odneal’s 3-year-old business sells kits and supplies for hydroponic – plants grown without soil – and aquaponic – plants grown without soil in a water loop provided from a fish pond – gardening operations to the casual hobbyist and the serious indoor gardener alike. The walls are packed with bottles of liquid organic nutrients, kits for kids looking to grow cacti or flowers and everything you’ll need for an indoor, floor-to-ceiling vegetable garden designed to feed a family of four. “With indoor gardening … you don’t want dirt – it’s heavy and can bring bugs,” Odneal said. “So that’s why hydroponic is ideal. You leave the dirt outside.” As part of Odneal’s business, he will come to your house and install and service your indoor hydroponic garden, which he believes will one day be as normal of an “appli-

Zak said Plymouth Place tried to grow plants up a wall that could be used as a meditative and communal area for

When rich Northerns move to Florida or Arizona, they’re not just looking for better weather; they’re seeking lower taxes. The federal government has eased off on estate taxes, exempting the first $5.34 million of assets. With portability, we may hold onto $10.68 million per couple. But many states are not so generous. In New Jersey, for instance, the state exemption is just $675,000 per person, and the tax rate can go to 16 percent. As residents move, more governors are looking to trim the tax. Wilson was arrested a week later and charged with first degree murder in her death, as well as armed robbery, residential burglary and other charges. Wilson was found with several items stolen from the home in his possession, according to prosecutors. Police also said they used O’Laughlin’s phone, which he allegedly stole, and Wilson’s own cellphone to track his location. Police said they recovered DNA evidence from a knit cap they said was used to break a window in the home to gain entry. Wilson was on parole for a 2003 robbery at the time he was charged with her death. He was released after he served more than half of his 11-year sentence.

It’s vital for libraries to appreciate patrons I do not make it a habit of arguing with directors of libraries as they are my colleagues and friends. Before I found my way to Lyons, however, I was speaking with a group of library directors at a conference and we were discussing the most important things in libraries. A number of different opinions were stated. In parCOMMUNITY ticular, one of the directors VOICE boisterously sounded off that Dan we should always remember that books always have been, Powers continue to be and will always be, the most important things in libraries. The small crowd of directors vehemently and unanimously agreed. It is rare for me to fly off the handle in a rage and I try to maintain an even keel personality, but that attitude did not sit well with me. I love books and all that they can do for everyone in our world but books in a library certainly take a back seat to something else – something that is even more special and important. Well, I did not lose my cool, but I did feel obligated to take a stand in conflict to that belief. I maintained then, and I continue to uphold, that the most important things in libraries are the employees and the patrons. Without the services of the employees, libraries could not function and visitors would fail to come through the doors every day (in order to read those books). Without patrons, libraries would become useless, and there would be no point in maintaining libraries and their books. Libraries are important, though, because of the services they offer. Books certainly play a major role in the importance of library services, but today libraries are also about research, study, electronics, programs and getting together. Employees are familiar and helpful with the huge scope of the new array of services, and patrons are warmly welcomed to take an active part using the myriad of services libraries suddenly have to offer. Because of everything that I just described, the Lyons Public Library collectively believes that we should show our sincere gratitude in a very special and unique manner. From 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, the Lyons Public Library is hosting a Patron The library has been throwing these fall parties for a number of years, but we have consciously decided to place a greater emphasis on recognizing the best patrons this side of Jupiter. Your journey starts here!

Departing Riverside Village Manager Peter Scalera was hired for a new position at the village of Bloomingdale.

A thumbs up to departing Riverside Village Manager Peter Scalera. He was great to work with during his years as village manager in Riverside and we wish him good luck on his new position in Bloomingdale. Scalera was respected by trustees and staff in Riverside, who bid him a fond farewell while also looking forward and appointing Finance Director Jessica Frances to take over his position Sept. 15. A thumbs up to Riverside’s newly appointed interim village manager and current finance director, Jessica Frances. With the village since 2012, the Riverside Board of Trustees said her appointment will likely become permanent at some point in the future. We hope Frances will be available and responsive to the public and we look forward to continuing to work with her in her new role.

La Grange apartments should be condos

Village Board, do not allow those apartments to go up in La Grange Road and Ogden Avenue. At the very least, make them condos, not rentals. These people move, there’s Section 8, there are transients, their kids are always behind in school. And then a teacher tries to contact a parent and their mailbox is full. Who knows how they’re going to enforce how many people are going to be living in each of those units. They’re all going to bring their friends from the inner city. And yes, they want to better their education for their children, but La Grange doesn’t have the resources and the school district does not have enough for the special services [needed] to service these children. So please, please, at the very least, make these condos or scrap the whole idea.

This year, Odneal was given six more wall panels to use, and the garden is now flourishing. “Hydroponics work great, even outdoors,” Odneal said. The reason is because a

By BRADY CREMEENS Illinois News Network

By MATTHEW HENDRICKSON mhendrickson@shawmedia.com CHICAGO – In what was big news for ridesharing companies and their customers, Gov. Quinn vetoed a bill Monday that would have heavily regulated the industry. The bill would have im-

posed statewide safety, pricing, taxing and other regulations on commercial ridesharing. It also would have limited the ability for local governments to create their own regulatory policies on this relatively new industry. Ridesharing – popularized by companies like Uber and Lyft – allows vehicle owners to turn their car into a taxi service, picking up riders and

dropping them off at locations for a fee. The drivers are notified of a person needing a ride largely through the companies’ smartphone applications. Drivers may work part-time or full-time, and since they are not a taxi company, the are not currently subject to taxi industry regulations. The governor disagreed that the new legislation – nicknamed the “Uber Bill” after prominent ridesharing and taxi alternative company Uber – would be beneficial to the Illinois public. Gov. Quinn said it wasn’t for Springfield to determine rideshare regulations for the

whole state. “The principle of home rule is an important one,” Quinn said in a statement. “I am vetoing this legislation because it would have mandated a onesize-fits-all approach to a service that is best regulated at the local level.” Traditionally, transportation services are regulated at the local level, the governor’s office said, and this bill “would have limited the ability of home rule units of government to adopt alternative approaches that best fit local needs.” State Rep. Mike Zalewski, D-Riverside, disagreed.

“I’m disappointed that the two bills I worked on this spring to put consumer safety first and provide a fair marketplace for the ridesharing services were vetoed,” Zalewski said in a statement. “I disagree with the contention that this should be decided only locally, as these services stretch across city and county lines and the bills would provide important baseline protections that local governments could build upon. Both the main bill and trailer bill received overwhelming support in the House and Senate

In his letter to the Illinois General Assembly explaining his decision to veto, Quinn stated a firm belief that Article VII of the Illinois Constitution provides a “transformational approach to reallocating the balance of power towards local government and away from the State” and is “perhaps the most significant innovation” of the state’s Constitution. The governor’s office cited steps Chicago is already taking to implement safety regulations amongst ridesharing companies and users, and expressed a need to keep from interfering in the local process. The governor’s stance and veto finds itself at odds with his own Democrat Party and the Republicans alike, as the bill saw major majority approval in both the House and Senate and was sponsored by members from both sides of the political aisle.

Old Vilnius Café imports taste of Lithuania DARIEN – Although I knew nothing about Lithuanian food, my companion was thrilled when I asked him to join me for dinner at Old Vilnius Café, named after the country’s capital. Inside the door sits a gift shop full of Lithuanian wares, many celebrating the 1992 bronze-medal Lithuanian Olympic basketball team. Mugs, T-shirts and amber jewelry line the shelves. The shop opens up into a small deli offering traditional candy, Lithuanian magazines and a variety of goodies to take home. Beyond the gift shop, the intimate dining room is a mix of cozy and elegant, with black padded leather chairs and dark wood furnishings lit softly by wall sconces. Old Vilnius Café serves Lithuanian and Eastern European cuisine, with dishes made in-house from scratch. During our visit, the waiter apologized when my companion ordered zeppelins, because the traditional dish of grated potato dumplings stuffed with minced meat had sold out, but he gladly offered a fried version as a substitute for the boiled. After reading through the menu, I decided to start with an appetizer of fried Lithuanian bread served with a warm cheese and garlic sauce. The strips of crispy bread were piled into a large bowl and smothered in gooey cheese. It was delicious, but very rich. I was glad to have someone helping me dig in before our main courses arrived. My companion sipped on warm red beet soup, borszcz, which I sampled and really enjoyed. A cold variation of the soup also is an option. Although our waiter tried to warn us, we ordered much more food than we could finish, but the place was a meat and potato lover’s paradise that proved hard to resist. Because it was my first time eating Lithuanian food, I

They came with a side of sour cream and bacon tidbits, as did many items on the menu. The savory dish was a delicious balance of starchy potatoes, salty bacon and cool sour cream. My eager dining companion, much more educated about the cuisine thanks to fond childhood memories of many of the dishes, ordered a combination plate to taste

a bit of everything. His plate arrived loaded with fried zeppelin, potato sausage, kugelis, Lithuanian sausage and sauerkraut. Of course, bacon and sour cream added their decadent flourish. My favorite was the kugelis, a baked potato cross between cake and pudding. It reminded me of twice-baked potatoes, but the best I’d ever had. In addition to a wide range of European chicken, beef and

pork entrees, the menu offers several all-American options such as chicken wings, Caesar salad and a bacon cheddar Angus burger. We ended up boxing half of our dinner to take home, but if I hadn’t been so stuffed, I would have loved to try a slice of raspberry cheesecake or chocolate lava cake. Cocktails, Lithuanian beer and wine also are featured. Old Vilnius Café combines

ethnic cuisine with a welcoming atmosphere and plenty of options for Lithuanian food fans and those less familiar with the hearty dishes.

Defense dominant in RB victory By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com RIVERSIDE – Stuck in an hour-plus lightning delay after enduring a 59-yard drive by Morton to start the game, Riverside Brookfield had to regroup. The Bulldogs took advantage of the delay, making adjustments defensively that resulted in a 22-0 victory in the season opener Friday. Playing without starting quarterback Anthony Stanciu,

the Mustangs went with a runheavy offense, which seemed to catch RB off guard on the first drive. The Mustangs marched for 59 yards on that drive, but the lightning delay hit with 4:00 left in the first quarter. “The first drive they had some big plays on us and [with the delay] we got to go over our schemes and go over how to stop that,” RB linebacker Jordan Petronella said. “It benefited us in the long run.” RB finally broke the score-

less start with a 36-yard field goal from senior Nick Fucinato with 5:29 left in the second quarter. Fucinato, in his first season playing football, added a 37-yard field goal in the third quarter to double the lead. He made it 3-for-3 with a 26-yarder on the first play of the fourth quarter. “I had more nerves on the kickoff, but when the field goal came I knew I was confident,” Fucinato said. Brian Kulaga ran in touchdowns of one and two yards to

add to the lead in the fourth quarter. The defense held on for RB’s first shutout since 2011. “The thing about this team is they never get too low and they never get too high,” RB coach Brendan Curtin said. “They have a professional demeanor about them. They knew they had a job to do and they did it well for the most part.” The Bulldogs’ season opener last year at St. Francis was postponed twice before being

played on Sunday. Despite other postponements in the western suburbs, RB and Morton were able to get the game in on Friday. When the teams returned from the delay, RB’s defense stood out. Petronella explained the unit’s nickname is “the dark side” and they lived up to the menacing moniker. “We always try to play within the rules, but hit hard,” Petronella said. “That intensity kept throughout the game.”

Nolan Dean delivers in Nazareth debut By DAN SANTAROMITA

dsantaromita@shawmedia.com

Game breakdown

LA GRANGE PARK – After receiving plenty of preseason hype, Nazareth lived up to it in the season opener. The Roadrunners trounced Bloomington on Saturday, winning 42-7 after jumping ahead to a 30-0 lead after the first quarter. Playing linebacker and running back, senior transfer Nolan Dean had a standout Nazareth debut with two rushing touchdowns and a safety. Dean started the scoring by earning a safety for the Roadrunners’ defense on Bloomington’s first possession. He scored both of his touchdowns in the first quarter. Dean, a transfer from Neuqua Valley, easily adjusted to the Roadrunners’ offense thanks to the team’s big and talented offensive line. “You see the holes open up and you try to juke out defenders, but it’s just our linemen,” Dean said. “It’s just big holes. We have a great line.” Like last year, Nazareth still used several different running backs on the day. Sophomore Ivory Kelly-Martin was not one of them due to an injury, but the Roadrunners didn’t miss the talented young running back on Saturday. Dean’s standout debut was not a surprise to coach Tim

Nazarth’s Nolan Dean (left) follows his blocker in Saturday’s home game against Bloomington. Dean had two rushing touchdowns in his Nazareth debut. Racki, who has seen Dean perform in practice throughout the summer and early fall practices. “I see that every day so I get spoiled by it,” Racki said. “I was impressed, but not surprised. He’s an explosive runner. He was out early in camp with an injury so he still needs to get his wind back. That’s why it was good that we have that depth where we can play him on one side of the ball and pick our spots with him on defense.” Dean is a college level talent, but has yet to receive any

offers. He still lives in Naperville and believes the offers will come if he keeps working hard. “I like the small environment with the school,” Dean said of Nazareth. “I have interest. I talk to a lot of coaches every day so I just want to get my grades high and keep on playing. I think we have a good team so it should come.” Nazareth led 42-0 at halftime and had a number of players make big plays. Kevin Jackson had a first quarter interception to set up one of

Dean’s scores. The Roadrunners led 16-0 with 8:37 left in the first quarter. Dean couldn’t speak highly enough of the offensive line. Four returning starters – Jack Shutack, Mike Owens, Patrick Kilcommons and John Kilcommons – worked hard in the offseason to become one of the best units in the area. “When we lost in the second round of the playoffs last year to Sycamore, as we were going into the locker room, Mike Owens came up to me and said ‘I want the weight room open

Western Conference baseball enjoys banner summer SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA BROOKFIELD – The Western Conference youth baseball league based in Brookfield enjoyed its most successful summer in its 53-year history as three teams competed for titles in the postseason. The 15U team went undefeated in the Northern Illinois state tournament, defeating Downers Grove (5-4), La Grange (12-4) and Lansing (43) to reach the championship game. Michael Gruber drove in the game-winning run to cap a comeback from a 3-0 deficit against Lansing. Western Conference won 5-2 against Homewood in the Championship. Winning

Leading RB against some new foes will be senior libero Natalia Gheewala. Gheewala was a standout last season and will be the leader for the Bulldogs’ defense. “She’s a phenomenal passer and defender and she’s improved this season,” RB coach Dan Bonarigo said. Other returners include junior setter Olivia Gyssler, junior middle Nicole LaBelle and senior Paola Lehman, who Bonarigo expects to be the team’s top outside hitter. Senior hitter Lana Herrmann and junior defensive specialist Selene Anaya also are key returners. Three sophomores, setter Maria Gonzales and middles Dana Rettke and Gia Cinkay, are up on the roster. Rettke is 6-foot-7 and started on the varsity basketball team last winter. “I think we’re starting in a good place this year competitively speaking,” Bonarigo said. “Of course we still want to look for competing for a conference title, which is not unrealistic, but it’s tough. I think our division champ is probably going to look at having a few losses.”
