Witnesses recall interaction with accused on day of killing A string of events and eye-witness accounts led to authorities charging John Wilson Jr. with first-degree murder in the killing of Lyons Township freshman Kelli O’Laughlin in her Indian Head Park home, according to authorities. All of the following events took place between Oct. 27, 2011, and Dec. 21, 2011: OCT. 27 ■ Shortly after 3 p.m.: Witness has a short conversation with man later identified as John Wilson Jr. as she is gathering Osage oranges along a frontage road a short distance from the murder scene in the 6300 block of Keokuk Road. Her son and a neighbor arrived and were talking to the witness when Wilson walked by once more on the frontage road, then down Keokuk toward the O’Laughlin home.

Mohammed testified Wilson bought a can of Ice House beer and paid for it with a dollar bill, some loose change and a gold, one-dollar Sacajawea coin, such as those that were stolen from the O’Laughlin home. Mohammed said he handed a phone book to Wilson, who then made a call on a cellphone. Wilson left the store for about 20 minutes and returned about 7:02 p.m., talking on the cellphone. Mohammed said he explained to Wilson where he was. Wilson left once more and returned about 7:33 p.m. He then purchased another can of beer, went outside where he was met by a police officer who started questioning him on an unrelated matter. Mohammed told the jury he did not call the police. Just then, Wilson’s cab arrived and he left.

■ Shortly after 4 p.m.: Another witness is driving east on Plainfield Road when she sees a man later identified as Wilson climbing over a guardrail after trudging through an embankment that skirted a frontage road leading to the victim’s home. ■ About 5 p.m.: Brenda O’Laughlin comes home from work and finds her 14-yearold daughter, Kelli, lying face down in a pool of blood on the kitchen floor, where she had been dragged from the family room, when she walked into their Indian Head Park home. O’Laughlin called 911 and reported she thought her daughter committed suicide. Investigators converge on the crime scene. ■ About 7 p.m.: Wilson is taped on a security camera in the 7-Eleven store at 8700 Archer Ave., Willow Springs, buying
beer and arranging for a cab to take him back to his Chicago home. ■ Oct. 28: Brenda O’Laughlin begins receiving lurid text messages from her daughter’s cellphone, which was believed to be stolen from the home. The U.S. Secret Service determined through cellphone-tracking technology the murdered girl’s cellphone and Wilson’s phone were moving together throughout Chicago. ■ Nov. 2: John Wilson is arrested as he walks near a CTA Red Line Station in Chicago’s Southwest Side. ■ Nov. 3: Wilson is charged with first-degree murder after witnesses positively identified him in a lineup at the La Grange Police Department as the man seen near the park adjacent to the O’Laughlin home. ■ Dec. 21: Wilson pleads not guilty to all charges.

All three pointed out Wilson as the man they saw shortly before the time investigators believe the girl was killed. Carroll has intimated that investigators were fixated on Wilson from the start, being a black man accused of a crime in what he described as a white, affluent community. Wilson, a career criminal who spent nearly half of his life behind bars, was on parole at the time of the girl’s murder. He was arrested Nov. 2, 2011, and later charged with first-degree murder. and gray pants. The suspect had his hood pulled tightly so only his eyes were exposed and kept his hands inside his hoodie pockets during the altercation. No weapon was displayed. The department also is investigating a report in which a woman was beaten and robbed at 10:33 p.m. Aug. 23 in the 100 block of East Quincy Street, the release stated. The offender, described as a white man with an accent, told the victim to “shut up” as he stole cash, three silver chains and other personal items, according to the release. Since the victim was approached from behind, she was unable to provide any other description. She was later transported to MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn for injuries not believed to be life-threatening. RIVERSIDE – The Riverside Police Department is investigating two reported street robberies: one in the 3000 block of South Harlem Avenue and another in the 100 block of East Quincy Street. Police received a report of a male suspect who attempted to rob a person at 1:13 a.m. Sept. 4 in the 3000 block of Harlem Avenue, according to a department news release. The victim said as he exited his garage after parking his vehicle, the suspect stood directly in front of him and said, “Give me everything you got, or I’ll hurt you,” the release stated. The victim told the suspect twice he had nothing on him. The suspect then fled on foot, running north in the alley and left onto Lindberg Road, according to the release. Police were unable to locate the suspect, who was described as a 6-foot-tall white man wearing a blue hoodie

STICKNEY – A Chicago man was charged with child pornography and indecent solicitation after attempting to solicit a 12-yearold Stickney girl for sex, Stickney Police Department Deputy Chief Richard Jaczak said. Police charge Chicago man with soliciting area girl, 12

CICERO – The Cicero Police Department arrested the man accused of being the “No Boundaries Bandit� bank robber earlier this month. Rodrigo Medellin, 32, was charged with several counts of armed robbery, including felony aggravated assault to a police officer, felony aggravated fleeing and eluding police, felony aggravated unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, parole violation warrant and multiple traffic violations. Medellin is allegedly connected with about a dozen bank robberies ranging from May 16
through Aug. 31 in the Chicago area and suburbs. At least seven of the robberies were in the suburbs and five were in Chicago, according to a news release from the town of Cicero. Medellin is suspected in two robberies in the area, one at 4:50 p.m. June 6 at PNC Bank, 6650 W. Cermak Road, Berwyn, and another at 4:33 p.m. June 19 at Charter One, 4001 S. Harlem Ave., Stickney. At the time of arrest, which occurred after a vehicle chase and short foot chase, Medellin allegedly was found in possession of a firearm: a loaded Tec9 fully automatic weapon with a 30-round magazine.

Uber’s rise shows the waste in cab regulation SPRINGFIELD – A while back I took a cab to Chicago’s Navy Pier and attempted to pay for my ride with a credit card. My effort was greeted with a torrent of obscenities. The driver didn’t want to take my card despite a placard of regulations in the cab that said he must do so. When I pointed out the stack of credit card carbons on his dashboard, he hollered even louder. In the last year or so, an VIEWS alternative to cabs has come Scott on the scene. It’s called Uber. Reeder Folks can use an app on their cellphone to get a ride. No cash changes hands. It’s all done online. The drivers for Uber and its competitor, Lyft, have been screened by those companies and are driving their own cars. The pair get high marks for customer service. But the competition had the owners of some big-time Chicago cab companies hopping mad. The firms operate what economists call an oligopoly – that’s when a handful of big businesses control the market. In June, the median price for a Chicago taxi medallion was $339,625. There aren’t too many cab drivers who can fork over that kind of dough. So these big taxi outfits buy the medallions and rent them out to drivers for a portion of the day. The medallions are issued by Chicago City Hall. So, the bureaucrats like it because it keeps money pouring into city coffers. The cab companies like the system because they can continue to control the market. And the politicians like it because they get campaign contributions from the cab companies. And even though the industry is regulated, service can be – as my experience shows – pretty lousy. But now there is a game changer in the mix – Uber. So what did the taxi company fat cats do when they found out they might have to really compete? They started hiring Springfield lobbyists left and right. And they tried to force onerous regulations on Uber and Lyft. The measure passed with the help of a coalition of Chicago Democrats and downstate Republicans. To his credit, Gov. Pat Quinn vetoed the measure this past week. He cited the “home rule” powers of cities such as Chicago as a reason. But, governor, it is local government that created the cost prohibitive taxicab medallion system in the first place. This is service best regulated not at the state or local level. The best regulators are the consumers themselves. If they don’t like the service, they won’t use it.

Fix parking situation at Jewel-Osco La Grange Park Police are not custodians Now that the Jewel-Osco in La Grange Park is getting more business, they need to do a better job with the parking situation. It’s configured in such a way that the closest spots are at least 25 or 30 feet away from the entrance. And the whole parking lot, which accommodates about 30 spaces, is totally empty or used for idling school buses. The employees should be parking there. Let’s be customer friendly, too.
I was going through Brookfield on Labor Day morning, and I noticed Brookfield police officers picking up old garage sale signs. Why can’t the police take the signs with the addresses on them, bring them to the residents’ houses and give them a $25 citation for not picking up their garbage? Police should not be responsible for only picking up garbage.

Almost three years have passed since John Wilson was arrested for the murder of Kelli O’Laughlin. Why? The police had their reports finished the day he was charged. The defense gets all their copies within a month or two, then they investigate. Frivolous motions, month after month. Why does any judge allow this? I guess his right to a speedy trial is only good when the prosecution needs time, and he wants his case dismissed. What a joke.

Brookfield announces Kiwanis Park’s reopening
BROOKFIELD – Later this month, the village of Brookfield will host the grand reopening of Kiwanis Park. From noon to 5 p.m. Sept. 20, residents are invited to celebrate at the park, 8820 Brookfield Ave. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be at 12:30 p.m. The afternoon will include live music, animals from the Brookfield Zoo and demonstrations and open play on new basketball and volleyball courts and the disc golf course. LEE BRIGGS CANFIELD Lee Briggs Canfield, a long time resident of Arlington Heights, died peacefully at the age of 89 on September 2, at his home in La Grange. He was born in Toledo, Ohio, to Lee Canfield and Grace Betts Canfield, and was the youngest of three boys. Mr. Canfield proudly served in World War II, in the European theater. After returning to the states from the war he studied chemical engineering at The Ohio State University. In 1956, after a brief time with Sunbeam Corporation, he followed in the footsteps of his father and found his true calling in a long and storied career as a life insurance agent for Northwestern Mutual. His love for people and their stories helped him earn many significant company and industry honors, including twice being in Northwestern Mutual's “Top Twenty” in annual production. He enjoyed mentoring younger agents, including his son Dennis. Lee was a sailor who named his
first boat “Go Bananas” because whenever he was on a boat, he would “go bananas!” He enjoyed bicycling in France into his early eighties, and skiing, cigars, good red wine, opera, and firecrackers. He once famously set off a powerful M80 under the lid of a Weber grill, sending it sky high, terrifying some of his back-yard party guests and delighting others. He was quite a crooner, and enjoyed singing “Danny Boy” to anyone who would listen. People always did. A lifelong conservative, Lee and his beloved wife of 42 years, Eloise, who died in 1995, were active in the Goldwater Presidential campaign, many local and congressional elections, and the Reagan Presidential campaigns of 1976, '80 and '84. Lee was also actively involved in youth mentoring programs, and charities including Opportunity International. Even as his health declined, Lee always had a smile on his face and a word of encouragement for everyone. He regularly expressed gratitude to his amazing God for everything from a baby's laugh, to a sunny day or a rainy day, to a particular flower that caught his attention, to any piece of beautiful music. When it came to his five children and twelve grandchildren, Lee thought everything they did was the most amazing thing ever done. He liked to say, “every one of you is a winner!” In turn, his kids thank God for their amazing dad, his incredible optimism, and how he graciously embraced every moment of life to the fullest. Lee loved to laugh and make others laugh, and he lit up every room he entered. He would often say, “It doesn't cost any extra to have a good time!” He is survived by his brother, Daniel Canfield of Toledo, Ohio; his children, Beverly (David) Hayes, Dwight (Gretchen) Canfield, David Canfield, Dennis (Anne) Canfield, and Betsy (Tom Meade) Hart - all in the Chicago area- and those twelve amazing grandchildren. A service in celebration of Lee's life, and of thankfulness to God for that life, will be held on Saturday, September 13, at noon at the Western Springs Baptist Church, 4475 Wolf Road, Western Springs. A reception will follow. Good things come on small plates at Emilio’s HILLSIDE – Whether it’s a romantic date for two or a meal with friends and family, it’s all about sharing when it comes to dining on tapas, the “small plates” that originated in Spain and went on to deliciously infiltrate other cuisines. It’s a pure pleasure to go back to one of the region’s original purveyors: Emilio’s Tapas in Hillside. We dropped by late on a Saturday afternoon before the restaurant filled, and opted for a table on the flower-ringed patio, where retractable awnings are available to counter any unwanted sun or rain. Lightly falling water from a lion’s-head fountain helped set the mood, with soft Spanish music providing a subliminal dance beat. The indoor seating, which includes a bar, is an attractively escapist setting of rustic walls adorned with intricate tile patterns and murals of Spanish scenes. While we perused a menu traditionally divided between offerings of cold (fria) and hot (caliente) tapas, and varieties of the famous specialty paella – a saffron-infused rice typically featuring seafood – our helpful server brought a complimentary plate of a Spanish ham spread on crusty bread garnished with baby lettuces. She filled us in on the day’s specials and made welcome recommendations as we pro-

It was apparent from the nearby conversations between servers and guests that a lot of happy regulars were on hand. We couldn’t resist ordering our go-to tapa: bacon-wrapped dates in a red pepper butter sauce. The dish was exceptional, featuring dates that were unusually plump, sweet and velvety. Add the applewood smoked bacon and the delicate red pepper sauce counterpoint, and it’s a standout. We used the bread basket offerings to sop up every last drop. Another tradition my companion couldn’t resist is the garlic potato salad, not for the faint of heart when it comes to the generous chopped cloves. With a short tower of clean plates at the ready, we tried something new to us: grilled black Angus with sauteed
oyster and shiitake mushrooms, Spanish potatoes and cilantro cava sauce. The beef was tender, flavorful and cooked medium rare exactly to order. It paired well with a Spanish version of home fries and the zesty sauce made with cava, Spain’s answer to Champagne. We capped the meal with a delectable cold tapa of roasted eggplant, pear tomato and green onion, accented with piquant goat cheese and grilled shrimp with a balsamic vinaigrette. The mild eggplant dominated the dish, and provided a fresh veggie spread for toast points. Service throughout our meal was wonderful, with water glasses kept full and plates whisked away in anticipation of the next arrival. To keep in mind for a future visit, flamenco performances are featured peri-
odically, and the restaurant offers a gluten-free menu. We hadn’t left enough room to try any of the desserts, which range from Callebaut bittersweet chocolate terrine with raspberry sauce to Flan de Caramelo to a cheese plate with local honeycomb, Spanish quince, figs and Spanish Marcona almonds. However, we did indulge in a superb cappuccino, rich in creamy flavor and froth, that was prepared, our server told us, from organic, free trade beans. It was a perfect ending to a relaxed, savory meal.

It’s official: Emery’s 1st draft was poor If the Bears present is shaky, the future very well could be scary Did the Chicago Bears run into a better team in their opening day disappointment versus the Buffalo Bills at Soldier Field, or was it just another step in the “process” that GM Phil Emery and coach Marc Trestman reference so often? I suspect it was the latter, which isn’t necessarily good news, but minimally tells us we’re just going to have to hang on for a few more weeks before we really know what we’ve got in these Chicago Bears. If in fact the Bears just aren’t as good as the Buffalo Bills, then Emery and Trestman have a big problem on their hands. The Bills aren’t a bad team, but at best they are one of a number of average or mediocre teams in the NFL that are going nowhere fast. That then could mean that the Monsters of the Midway are just a bad football team. Like I said, I’m not ready to write off this year’s Bears, and I really don’t think you should either. But even if these guys

The future of any NFL team is based on how it drafts and scouts college talent. The reason these Bears are so old is a number of years of bad drafting by Jerry Angelo and Lovie Smith. Now I’m sure you’re all thinking no news flash there, but it is time to start wondering if Emery and Trestman have that trend turned. It is now time to officially declare Emery’s first draft as the Bears general manager as disappointing to poor. Yes, Alshon Jeffery is a great addition to this team and possibly even a building

Unfortunately, that’s it. Shea McClellin continues to receive chances and to disappoint. He and Isaiah Frey on the practice squad are all that remain from that group. Even if McClellin becomes a serviceable starter, that’s just not enough from an entire draft class. The Bears have Kyle Long, Jon Bostic, Khaseem Greene, Jordan Mills, Cornelius Washington, Marquess Wilson and Demontre Hurst to show for Emery’s sophomore class. It is at least 16 weeks too early to grade this group
or form any final conclusions about the long-term prospects of any of these prospects other than to say Kyle Long looks like another potential building block for the future. But is it fair to ask what your expectations are for any or all of Long’s classmates? A few more serviceable to better-than-average NFL players? If that is in fact how it turns out, once again Emery and company just have to do better. There are 10 drafted rookies or undrafted rookie free agents on this year’s final 53, the same number as the Bears kept last year. That is a nice number, but the question we need to ask is, is that because the talent is so exciting, or the talent they had to beat out to make the team was uninspiring? What we can say for sure is if this year’s crop of Bears rookies don’t prove to be better than the first two groups Emery compiled, the franchise is in some serious jeopardy.

What is interesting is Emery has proven to have a very good eye for veteran talent. And he seems to work veteran free agency very well. But by itself, that is a one-way ticket to average. Counting on veteran free agents to contend will almost always lead to salary cap issues, a lack of depth up and down your roster and perhaps some number of very good players but a certain lack of star power. There is enough talent on this 2014 Bears roster for this team to be a playoff contender, even after the embarrassing loss to Buffalo. But that’s only if this group can stay healthy and get itself focused on stopping the run. But if this 2014 rookie class doesn’t turn out to be the best the Bears have had since 2003, the last good draft this club had, and the next couple of drafts aren’t better than that, Bears fans had best start preparing for a very long dry spell before their club is ready to contend again.

RIVERSIDE – The story of Riverside Brookfield kicker Nick Fucinato sounds like something straight out of a movie. The current Bulldogs kicker never played football prior to this season. In the season opener against Morton, he nailed all three field goal attempts, from 36, 37 and 26 yards, and converted his only extra point attempt. RB coach Brendan Curtin discovered Fucinato during the summer. “I was walking across the field one day in July,” Curtin said. “He was kicking with his buddies. I saw him boot a 40-yarder and I stopped. I didn’t even know his name at the time. I had seen him around before. We talked and I invited him out here. He was driving the ball. He wasn’t just barely getting them over. He was smoking it. That was a big free agent pick up for us, no doubt about it.” Fucinato joined the team in summer camp, but the kicking part has come natural to him. He played soccer until he broke his ankle in seventh grade and stopped playing the sport.
On Aug. 28, he got to show off his big leg in front of a packed home crowd at Riverside Brookfield. Before he could score RB’s first nine points of the season via field goals, he had to boot the opening kickoff. “I had more nerves on the kickoff, but when the field goal came I knew I was confident,” Fucinato said. Fucinato, a senior who was on RB’s varsity basketball and baseball teams last year, now has the opportunity to be a threesport athlete. His early play at kicker has given Curtin plenty of confidence in his ability. He showed that confidence right away in the first game of the year by sending him out to attempt a 36-yard field goal, which Fucinato split right down the middle with plenty of room to spare. Fucinato said he knows he can make kicks bigger than that. “I think 50 is the longest I can do,” he said. “So far I haven’t tried longer.” As for the Bulldogs as a whole, RB lost to Nazareth 49-6 on Saturday to fall to 1-1. RB’s only score came on a kickoff return by Matt Chapp.

Fenwick falls to Bishop Lynch on late score SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA Fenwick lost the battle of the Friars on Saturday at Concordia University in a 35-32 loss against Bishop Lynch (Tex.). Last year in Dallas, Fenwick got the victory, but Bishop Lynch evened the series. The Oak Park school took the lead late at 32-27, but Bishop Lynch retook the lead with less than two minutes remaining and held on for the win. Fenwick trailed 20-7 at halftime but quickly bounced back to tie the game at 20-20 in the third quarter. Quarterback Jack Beneventi hit Pat Donahue for a 9-yard touchdown to give Fenwick the late lead before Bishop Lynch running back Rawleigh Williams III broke through for the game-winning score on a 54-yard run. Fenwick (1-1) returns to Concordia at 2 p.m. this Saturday against De La Salle in the Chicago Catholic League Green opener.
Downers Grove South 28, Proviso West 27 (OT)
It is only Week 2 of the high school football season, but Downers Grove South’s game Friday night against Proviso West packed enough drama for a whole season. In a back-and-forth affair, the Panthers grabbed a 21-14 lead with 52 seconds left in the game before the Mustangs tied it up on a touchdown pass with two ticks left on the clock. The game went to overtime, where the Mustangs won 28-27 in a West Suburban Conference crossover game. With the loss, West dropped to 1-1 heading into Friday’s West Suburban Silver opener at Oak Park River Forest, which is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.

The Chargers picked up their first win of the season by going up 41-0 at halftime and cruising in the second half. St. Joseph improved to 1-1 in Saturday’s victory at Elmhurst College. The Chargers are expected to improve to 2-1 after receiving a forfeit win against St. Francis de Sales, which has forfeited its first two games, in a scheduled Chicago Catholic League Red game.
Roadrunners cruise into conference play By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com LA GRANGE PARK – So far it’s been smooth sailing for Nazareth football, but things should get tougher now that the Roadrunners are entering East Suburban Catholic Conference play. The Roadrunners beat Riverside Brookfield 49-6 on Saturday to improve to 2-0 on the season. It was the second straight game in which Nazareth scored more than 40 points while allowing just one score. “It’s hard to complain,” Nazareth coach Tim Racki said. “Everything that we’ve asked them to do, they’ve done, in practice more importantly. They’ve been practicing really hard. “As a coach, when you have this kind of talent and they’re also good kids off the field, it makes it special.” Nazareth now heads into conference play starting Saturday against St. Patrick at Hansen Stadium. The Shamrocks are 2-0 and, like the Roadrunners, have won both games against Taft and Lane. The Roadrunners last played St. Patrick in 2011, a 35-32 Nazareth win. “Beginning on Saturday, the ESCC is always so physical every week, regardless of who you are playing,” Racki said. “Coach [Dan] Galante always has a physical team. It’s going to be a very physical game. Their quarterback [Zach Fuller] is real good and they got two wide receivers who are 6-5, so that’s something we’re going to have to address. They have two real hard running backs that run between the tackles with their line, which traditionally is always physical. They’re real balanced, so we’re going to have our hands full.” Fuller connected with Patrick Devlin for four touchdowns Saturday against Lane Tech. Limiting that combination will be a priority for the Nazareth defense. The Shamrocks have combined for 93 points in the first two games. Nazareth’s defense only allowed a late score against Bloomington in Week 1. Against Riverside Brookfield, the Bulldogs got on the board with a kickoff return for a touchdown.
