the trees were trash. The cold weather early in the season didn’t help, and the result was that all of the luna moths perished.

Currently, Bowlas is raising the royal walnut moths at his apartment in Riverside, because they need a more warm, humid environment that the air conditioned library can provide, and Polyphemus moths, of which only one group remains, on a tree outside the library.

The moths living in a tree outside the library currently are in their caterpillar stage, and they’re big – really big.

Each is about four-inches-long and about an inch thick. Soon, they will be creating their cocoon and then will emerge as moths.

The reason Bowlas likes the dim lights of Riverside is for the benefit of his brood: Moths, like many insects, are drawn to bright light.

“They navigate by moonlight,” he explained. “When they see a bright light [such as a streetlight] they get lost and confused and won’t lay their eggs.”

When the moths have emerged, they have their own special something about them, he said. While not quite as vibrant as the beloved butterfly, their muted colors of grey and blue and brown are beautiful in their own way.

As more people settle in the area and the lights get brighter, the moth population is on the decline, he said. He hopes to instill a similar love (though maybe not as intense as his own) in Riverside’s residents and to hopefully help the population return. Because the moths he is raising are from Missouri, the breeding of them with local moths will be good for the population’s diversity, he said.

“I hope to build an awareness of what was and what could be,” Bowlas said of his project. “I want to show how [humans] are changing things and what we’ll lose.

“I’d like to bring some back to the community.”

RIVERSIDE – Brent Bowlas has been into bugs since he was 5 years old. He’s not sure why; he was just drawn to them.

In addition to stamp, coin and rock collections, Bowlas collected bugs – all types.

“I was crazy for bugs,” Bowlas recalled of his childhood. “I just had boxes of bugs.”

Bowlas grew up outside of Edwardsville, near St. Louis.

Although it wasn’t exactly the country, he had room to roam and explore. It’s part of the reason he likes living in Riverside now, he said.

Riverside is darker than other area communities, he said. The town’s iconic gas lights are dimmer than most street lamps, which suits his current project just fine.

Bowlas, assistant programming director at the Riverside Public Library, 1 Burling Road, has been raising moths at his home and around the library as part of a project to inform the public about the fluttering critters and enrich the natural environment around the village.

But, why moths?

“I wish I could answer that,” Bowlas laughed outside the library on Friday. “I like them better than butterflies.”

A few months back, Bowlas purchased moth eggs from a Missouri supplier and had them delivered. Bowlas was initially hoping to raise three species of moth: Luna, known for their expansive wingspan and light green color; royal walnut moths, which emerge from the ground much like cicadas; and Polyphemus moths,

Along the same lines as her fellow finalists, Bonnie Krozel, of Western Springs, said she wishes whoever wins the very best.

“It was a great honor to be picked and nominated by The Treasure Chest,” Krozel said.

Krozel, who said she’s the luckiest person because of her family, friends and faith, also thanked Licitra Roofing for offering such a contest.

The best part of this contest is it’s a simple thing being offered to deserving families, according to the fourth finalist Sharon Galloway.

She said winning this roof would take a major weight off her and her husband’s shoulders.

RIVERSIDE – The Riverside Board of Trustees gave Police Chief Tom Weitzel the green light to purchase a new police cruiser after one of the department’s vehicles was totaled in a rear-end crash on First Avenue north of 31st Street.

The officer was completing a traffic stop just after midnight June 3 when he had to run into the Forest Preserve to avoid being hit by his own squad car as another driver slammed into the back at an estimated 60 mph, according to police reports.

The officer’s 2011 Chevy Tahoe was totalled in the crash and much of the equipment inside the vehicle was also damaged, Chief Weitzel told the board at their Thursday meeting.

According to Weitzel, the insurance company for the driver who crashed into the squad car will cover the cost of replacing the car, as well as replacing broken equipment in the vehicle and its installation. The driver’s insurance also will cover the cost of re-striping the vehicle.

The board unanimously approved the chief’s request to replace the vehicle.

Riverside: Army Corps will make repairs at Swan Pond

By MATTHEW HENDRICKSON mhendrickson@shawmedia.com RIVERSIDE – At the Riverside Board of Trustee’s Thursday meeting, Village Manager Peter Scalera provided the board and public with a short update to the village’s discussions with the Army Corps of Engineers over whose responsibility it was to make repairs to a culvert at Swan Pond.

The area of Swan Pond has been littered with debris since a winter ice sheet on the Des Plaines River picked up and moved the earth around a bed of plantings that was built to divert flood waters to a culvert and back to the Des Plaines River. Water now pools in front of the culvert instead of flowing out and the area has regularly flooded.

On June 16, representatives of the Army Corps took a tour of Swan Pond to survey the damage.

On Thursday night, Scalera told trustees the Army Corps had agreed to pay for and to perform work to fix the problem and alleviate flooding.

The village still is in discussions with the Army Corps on several other issues relating to Swan Pond, Scalera said, but said the village still is waiting to see.

Due to the flooding, debris has covered the pipe that moves water back out to the river. Scalera said the village’s Public Works Department will begin to clean the area again, now that the Army Corps have made the decision to perform the needed work.

LYONS – On July 16, the village of Lyons unanimously approved the appointment of Sergeant Matthew Buckley to the position of deputy chief with a 5-0 vote.

Buckley, who lives in Riverside with his wife and three children, was hired by the department in 1998 and promoted to sergeant in 2011.

He is a member of the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System Emergency Services Team and attended class No. 354 of the Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command, according to a village news release. Buckley also holds numerous police certifications.

“I see him taking a leadership role,” Village Manager and interim Police Chief Tom Sheehan said. “I see him as a teacher and as a mentor.”

Sheehan said the village’s administration was proud of the decision to appoint Buckley, but that it wasn’t an easy one.

“It’s nice to be in a department where you have three commanders in leadership roles to be able to choose from.

“We’ve got a number of

highly qualified people on our staff, but he rose to the top. I think he’ll do a great job,” Sheehan said.

Because of the layoffs of seven officers in the police department following the breakdown of negotiations with the Fraternal Order of Police over a new contract in April, the deputy chief and commanders also will continue to perform patrol functions in the village, Sheehan said.

With an additional two officers currently headed for retirement, Sheehan said. He hopes to re-hire one of the laidoff officers back to the department within the next 60 days.

“Were evaluating that now,” Sheehan said. “We’re double checking the budget.”

According to Sheehan, the appointment of Buckley is part of a reorganization of the police department that will include a command staff comprised of a chief of police, a deputy chief and two commanders. Previously, the department had a chief of police and three commanders on the command staff.

Sheehan was made interim police chief after former Police Chief Harley Schinker suddenly announced his retirement in April.

Police received a report of a stolen gun at 4:15 p.m. July 12.

Police were told an employee had stolen loaded guns from a business in the 4300 block of South First Avenue and was refusing to return them. The caller told police the employee was outside and it was unclear if that person had the guns on them.

Police talked with the employee who said he would return them and did not have them on him.

First Avenue bike path becoming a reality There has been talk about constructing a path along First Avenue from Riverside-Brookfield High School to 26th Street in North Riverside to provide a safe route for students to walk and bike to school since 1968. However, it has been just that; talk.

For whatever reason, previous local officials and bureaucrats could never agree on how to get the project off the ground, and so it fell by the wayside. Year after year, students continue to walk through the forest preserves on a footpath trail that they have created themselves, and bike along busy First Avenue.

Over the past several months, I have been meeting COMMUNITY regularly with presidents VOICE Hugh Hermanek of North Jeff Riverside, Ben Sells of Tobolski Riverside, Kit Ketchmark of Brookfield. Officials from the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Cook County Forest Preserve, Friends of the Forest Preserve and Riverside-Brookfield High School. For the first time everyone truly is on the same page and ready and willing to work together.

I am happy to report Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle recently committed to providing a $100,000 matching contribution to the funds that Riverside, North Riverside and Riverside Brookfield High School have already committed. With these funds, the plan is to complete the first leg of the path – from the west side of First Avenue from Ridgewood Road to 31st Street – by the end of the year. The second phase of the project would be to continue this trail from 31st Street heading north along Golf View Road to 26th Street. I asked state Sen. Martin Sandoval, D-Cicero, to attend our monthly meeting to see if he could assist us. Sen. Sandoval has committed to helping us find the $600,000 in Springfield to complete this project. We are grateful for his help, and the additional support from the state could be a game changer. It is our goal to begin this phase of construction next year.

The final phase is to connect the Salt Creek Trail. After the 31st Street bridge was rebuilt over Salt Creek, it included a sidewalk but apparently no one followed up to create a path to connect it to the trail, leaving many to dub it the “Bridge to Nowhere.”

Connecting these trails would be a huge benefit to our residents and bicycle enthusiasts. In the span of months we now have project specifications, cost estimates and most importantly, funding commitments. At a time when so little seems to be getting done by our federal government it is refreshing to see local governments and agencies working tirelessly on a long stalled project that will help our residents and students tremendously.

Family and friends of Roy Overholt, a more than 50-year volunteer with Brookfield’s baseball programs, gathered at Kiwanis Park on Friday for the installation of a plaque dedicating the field to Overholt for his years of service. Roy’s wife, Audrey, holds Roy’s 6-week-old great grandson, Roy Olsowka, in a tender moment as they view the plaque.

Roy Overholt volunteered his time with Brookfield’s baseball league for more than 50 years. During that time, he had a great influence on many young player’s lives. The memorial plaque installed at Kiwanis Park July 11 is a deserved and fitting tribute to Overholt, who died in December.

A thumbs up to Brookfield’s Audrey Gallier, who recently won the national chemistry competition, You Be the Chemist Challenge Championship, in June in Philadelphia. Audrey, a homeschooled sixth-grader, was able to answer many tough questions to come out on top – and leads us to believe we probably need a chemistry refresher ourselves. Great job!

Here’s why pension systems are broken

I recently read where District 58 has approved for teachers a raise this year a shade over 2 percent.

Certainly, that’s in line with where our economy is at and most businesses. At the same time, they approved three principals a 6 percent-plus raise over the next three years. These three individuals, as it was reported, are retiring in three years. So, what does the nearly 20 percent raise mean?

The school board is fattening their

congress outlawed that? I guess those administrators voting for this are banking on the same happening to them when they leave.

Why do the principals get nearly 20 percent over three years when the teachers will be lucky to get 7 percent? I guess this is a perfect example why the pension systems in Illinois are broken.

Use ‘undocumented’ money for homeless The huge increase of [undocumented immigrants] swarming across our border and the administration’s rush to settle them all over our county is presented to us as a coincidence involving children that need our tender-hearted attention.

This is just the latest well-planned attempt to change the U.S.A.’s demographics. The new wrinkle this time is quote: It’s for the children.

The advanced planning to create this crisis is obvious and shameful. The result will be permanent residency followed by amnesty followed by social welfare programs that would make Sweden jealous … how about directing even a fraction of the money and effort being spent on immigrant children to end our own homelessness?

Pit bull attacks poodle

A dog attack was reported to police at 10:34 p.m. July 15 in the 4000 block of South Amelia Avenue. According to witnesses, a neighbors pit bull ran across the street and attacked and bit a toy poodle being walked down the street.

The poodle was taken to Berwyn VCA Animal Hospital for treatment, but it was unknown if the dog survived. The pit bull was found to be current on its rabbis vaccination and was turned over to its owner. The pit bull’s owner was issued a local ordinance citation. While at the animal hospital, an officer was pushed by a male juvenile from Berwyn, he was charged with battery.

Chama Gaucha carves out delicious niche DOWNERS GROVE – Never having eaten at a Brazilian steakhouse, I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect when I walked into Chama Gaucha, but the entire evening was impressive from beginning to end.

The hostess seated us at a menu-less table in the spacious dining room, and explained we were welcome to enjoy whatever we wanted from the circular salad bar.

Set in the center of the room, its array of offerings was a visual work of art. The design of the Downers Grove restaurant is richly accented with stone and wood, and the room boasts an eye-catching wine cellar.

We each received a small square card – red on one side and green on the other. This worked like a traffic signal, directing the many servers who carry carving knives and skewers of cuts of meats they skillfully slice to order. The men were dressed in elegant incarnations of the South American gaucho – their version of our cowboy. The restaurant’s tables are well spaced so the gauchos can roam freely.

After piling our plates with salad and veggies, my companion and I returned to our table, where a server pulled out my chair as I sat down.

Our tabletop quickly was filled with traditional Brazilian sides, including a warm basket of cheese bread, a plate of garlic mashed potatoes, warm fried bananas and fried polenta.

After making some room on our plates, we flipped our cards to the green side, and the gaucho-attired servers began to stop at our table. One after another, they offered us a slice or two of their carnivorous temptations.

Lamb, pork, chicken and beef. We ate until we couldn’t fit another bite. When we found a favorite, the gauchos offered us extra helpings, and when we spotted a stack of savory sausages across the

Back in the Pampas, gauchos can be found tending large herds of cattle in parts of Brazil and several neighboring countries. At the end of their long day, the gauchos gather around the churrasco or fire pit to eat and share stories. That dining experience inspired the South American steakhouse concept. The local

restaurant takes the name Chama from the Portuguese word for flame.

I doubt real gauchos ate like I did at Chama Gaucha, though. The entire evening, with its five-star service, surpassed any of my typical dining experiences. When my date dropped his napkin, someone handed him one over his shoulder almost instantly.

Chama Gaucha also has an extensive wine menu divided by region, and the restaurant staff was eager to share recommendations.

I would suggest guests save a little room for dessert, because by the time I’d finished clearing the last helping from my plate, I simply couldn’t indulge further.

Because of its all-you-caneat service, Chama Gaucha may be a bit pricier than your average meal out, but it’s an out-of-the-ordinary dining experience, whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or simply treating yourself.

RIVERSIDE – A new wave of varsity players took the field this summer for Riverside Brookfield baseball and the future appears bright.

The incoming junior class went 25-3, including 17-0 in the Metro Suburban Conference, on the sophomore team in the spring and got their first taste of varsity level baseball this summer. The Bulldogs, led by assistant varsity coach Mark Ruge, played 40 games this summer with doubleheaders Monday through Thursday to allow for travel tournaments on weekends.

in a league featuring other strong area programs like Oak Park-River Forest, Fenwick and Leyden. Ruge, along with varsity head coach Dallas Till and Ruge’s son, Joe, teamed up to provide coaching during the summer.

“We have a fine line to cross,” Mark Ruge said. “Coach Till, Joe and myself need to evaluate talent while being competitive, which is a real

challenge, as we challenge players to step out of their comfort zone [while still] attempting to maintain a high level of play.”

Joe Ruge is fresh off of graduating from St. Francis in Joliet, where he was a standout player for four years. The RB grad now is giving back by contributing to the coaching staff.

He is expected to help out with the varsity team when possible during the spring.

“He brings such a different perspective on the game,” Mark Ruge said. “It’s always nice to have an extra pair of eyes. We try to have him in the varsity dugout as much as possible. Sometimes he talks to Dallas more than me about baseball.”

As for RB’s current play-

RB baseball coaches, players manage busy summer schedules ers, senior Connor Berek impressed as a two-way player in the summer. Berek emerged as the team’s No. 2 starter in the spring and is in line to take over as staff ace next year.

Berek is working on adding a change-up to his arsenal.

“We have to be very careful with our pitching staff as this is a ton of innings to cover,” he said. “You’re not going to get a sore arm from me though.”

Fitzgerald played up with the sophomore team as a freshman in the spring.

With all the games and no home field, RB played all summer games on the road, so the summer easily could have become pretty crowded for some of the players. Ruge still encouraged the players to play travel ball whenever possible to push themselves. RB also was flexible with football players like Brian Kulaga and Adolfo Linares who have other summer commitments.

Summer season shows LT baseball team has room to improve

By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com WESTERN SPRINGS – After Lyons Township lost its first-round state summer baseball playoff game, coach George Ushela couldn’t remember the last time that happened.

Ushela puts more emphasis on the summer than most coaches and the Lions have paid that back with plenty of success. Last year, the Lions made it to the summer state final and the year before they won the title.

That’s what made the 4-0 loss to Montini on July 15 so shocking. LT entered as the top seed in the 16-team Fenwick regional and had lost just four times in the summer.

LEGAL NOTICE / PUBLIC NOTICE ORDINANCE NO. 2014-2 AN ORDINANCE ADOPTING PREVAILING WAGE RATES TO BE PAID TO LABORERS, MECHANICS AND OTHER WORKERS PERFORMING CONSTRUCTION OF PUBLIC WORKS IN THE BROADVIEW PARK DISTRICT COOK COUNTY, ILLINOIS WHEREAS, the State of Illinois has enacted the Prevailing Wage Act, approved June 26, 1941, as amended, being 820 ILCS 130/0.01 through 130/12 (the "Act"); and WHEREAS, the Act requires that during the month of June of each calendar year the Board of Commissioners of the Broadview Park District ("Park District") investigate and ascertain the prevailing rate of wages, as defined in said Act, in the "locality" of the Park District for laborers, mechanics and other workers performing construction of public works for the Park District.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE PRESIDENT AND BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS OF THE BROADVIEW PARK DISTRICT, COOK COUNTY, ILLINOIS, as follows: Section 1: To the extent and as required by the Act, the general prevailing rate of wages in this locality for laborers, mechanics and other workers engaged in the construction of public works coming under the jurisdiction of the Park District is hereby ascertained to be the same as the prevailing rate of wages for construction work in Cook County as determined by the Department of Labor of the State of Illinois (the "Department") as of June 1, 2014, a copy of that determination being attached hereto and incorporated herein by reference. As required by said Act, any and all revisions of the prevailing rate of wages by the Department shall supersede the Department's June determination and apply to any and all public works construction undertaken by the Park District. The definition of any terms appearing in this Ordinance which are also used in the Act shall be the same as in the Act. Section 2: Nothing herein contained is intended to apply nor shall be construed to apply said prevailing rate of wages as herein ascertained to any work or employment performed on behalf of this Park District except public works construction to the extent required by the Act. Section 3: If any section, paragraph, clause or provision of this Ordinance shall be held invalid, the invalidity thereof shall not affect any of the other provisions of this Ordinance.

Section 4: All Ordinances in conflict herewith are hereby repealed to the extent of such conflict.

Section 5: The Secretary shall publicly post or keep available for inspection by any interested party in the main office of this Park District this determination of prevailing rate of wages. A copy of this determination or of the current revised determination of prevailing rate of wages then in effect shall be attached to all contract specifications.

Section 6: By July 15th, the Secretary shall file a certified copy of this Ordinance with the Secretary of State of Illinois in Springfield and with the Illinois Department of Labor.

Section 7: Within thirty (30) days after filing a certified copy of this Ordinance with the Secretary of State, the Secretary shall cause to be published in a newspaper of general circulation within the area a notice that this determination is effective and constitutes the determination of this public body.

Section 8: The Secretary shall mail a copy of this Ordinance to any employer, and to any association of employers and to any person or association of employees who have filed their names and addresses, requesting copies of any determination stating the particular rates and the particular class of workers whose wages will be affected by such rates.
