Students are RB have gone on to open and lead the Best Buddies program at their colleges and universities. In fact, RB is known and respected as a program that turns out some of the best and more dedicated students, Mortenson said.

The program attracts all types of students. Zeke Linares, a junior, admitted he got involved because he heard it would look good to colleges. He started as an event buddy but soon wanted to do more with the club.

“I really enjoy it and [Joe] does too,” Linares said about his relationship with his buddy, Joe Wright. “We have a great time hanging out. We’ll go to Loca Moca or something.”

March is Best Buddies month, and the club plans to expand its efforts to the wider community outside of the school as well. The club has also decided on a fundraiser,

the Oak Park Animal Care League, where students will also volunteer.

The Shred the R-word campaign was started by the Best Buddies program to remind fellow students to think about how their language can affect others. Students said they don’t usually hear the word directed at a person with a disability, but in a more casual way, as a way to say something is bad.

“People don’t think about it,” Curtin said. “But it still hurts someone who hears it.

Most people understand that and if you say something, they’ll agree.”

While Best Buddies is all about friendship, it doesn’t hurt to try and make people more friendly, too.

Dan said his buddy, John, is like family at this point. He’ll come home and John will be baking with Curtin’s mom in the kitchen before the two hang out.

RB social worker Mari Mortenson, the program’s sponsor, said it’s precisely how casual the friendships are that make them so worthwhile and impactful on both student’s lives.

“It’s one thing for students just to be nice, but it’s another to have them develop real friendships, and that’s what this is about,” Mortenson said.

Most students get involved at the program’s events. Students are invited to join the group out bowling or to a sports game in Chicago. Stu-

RIVERSIDE – At lunch at Riverside Brookfield High School on March 12, Student after student lined up to sign their name, take a strip of paper and feed it through a shredder.

The action was symbolic and a pledge: On each strip of paper put through the shredder, the word “retarded” was printed in bold, block type.

“We’re trying to end the use of the word retarded,” senior Amy Zyck said. “If I hear someone in the hall say it, I ask them not to. People usually understand and accept it.”

Zyck, like the other students wearing blue T-shirts and manning the lunchroom table, is a part of the Best Buddies program. Best Buddies, an international nonprofit with a local chapter at RB, pairs students for one-to-one friendships with a student with an intellectual disability.

Zyck started with the program her sophomore year at RB and was soon paired up with her buddy, fellow senior Jennifer Bartlett.

“It’s fun,” Bartlett said of her friendship with Amy. “We go out to eat, we hang out.”

The program sets requirements that students hang out with their buddies outside of school and club events at least once a week, which all the students in the program said isn’t a hard goal to keep.

“It’s interesting how the friendship evolves,” senior Dan Curtin said. “It starts as a new friendship, it can be awkward, but then you’re just friends.

You have arguments, you hang out – it’s really no different.”

“It would cost the village tens of thousands of dollars to put up no parking signs on every street in Brookfield,” said Ginex.

Ginex added the village still has the option to put up no parking signs in specific locations in Brookfield.

Trustee Michael Garvey said having a 5 feet restriction from every driveway ultimately

eliminates street parking.

Garvey said a resident recently sent him a video of the resident not being able to get out of his own driveway. But, Garvey added these driveway situations can easily be resolved if neighbors act courteously.

Not all trustees were on board with the new ordinance.

Trustee Ryan Evans said he sees this amendment as a safe-

ty concern.

“This poses as a threat to congested areas like schools and churches,” Evans said.

“We could see many accidents.”

Board members will further discuss details about amending the ordinance at their next meeting March 24, where it will either be approved or rejected.

Trustees approve plans, prepare for First Avenue construction

By NICK SAMUEL msleditorial@shawmedia.com BROOKFIELD – Brookfield trustees unanimously approved preliminary plans to construct an apartment building at their March 10 meeting and discussed replacing equipment and First Avenue repairs.

Michael Gatto, vice president for RMG Realty Group, first introduced plans to build-

ing a new apartment building in Brookfield Feb. 24. Gatto said it will go back before the board in May for a final approval.

The apartment building will be nine stories high and will contain high end multi family apartments. Gatto said the apartment complex, located at 8934 Fairview Ave., will be marketed toward young and employed professionals.

The village also discussed replacing one of its chippers,

which is used by the village Public Works Department to grind up trees and branches in the village.

Riccardo Ginex, village manager, said both of the village’s chippers are 20 years old and need to be replaced. According to Ginex, it will cost the village about $47,000 to replace just one chipper.

“They break down, they need to be replaced,” said Ginex.

The village manager said the other chipper would be replaced in the next 10 years.

He added funding for the replacement will come from the village’s capital project fund.

The Chipper Replacement Proposal will come back before the board at the March 24 meeting for approval.

Ginex also discussed renovations along First Avenue, which he said will cause major traffic issues in the village.

Construction will begin in August, but residents will see construction signs on First Avenue and 31st Street this week.

“First Avenue will be renovated with left turn lanes,” said Ginex. “Streets will be closed down to one lane on the north, south, east and west sides.”

The village manager said the board will meet on March 19 to discuss the logistics of the construction plan.

RIVERSIDE – The Riverside Brookfield High School Board of Education announced March 12 that Kristin Smetana will serve as interim principal for the 2014-15 school year.

Smetana, currently assistant principal for curriculum, instruction and assessment at RB, will use next year at the school as a trial run before possibly getting the nod and dropping the interim title.

“I think it’s in the best interest of the district to provide [Smetana] an opportunity to work with the staff, students, and parents to see if she can be the principal for Riverside Brookfield High School the future,” Superintendent Kevin Skinkis said in a news release.

School officials began a search for an interim principal next year after announcing Principal Pam Bylsma was leaving for a position with Hinsdale School District 86.

Bylsma was named assistant

superintendent for District 86 by the district’s board Feb. 13.

Bylsma’s new contract will begin July 1, after finishing the year at RB. Skinkis cited Smetana’s experience as a teacher, department chair and assistant principal as a “strong foundation” for her to assume the role of principal next year.

“Her role in planning and organizing the joint institute day in collaboration with three feeder districts was excellent,” Skinkis said in the release.

Skinkis said the board will revisit the principal vacancy and Smetana’s performance as interim principal after the school’s first semester in January 2015.

Board President Matt Sinde said the board was confident of Skinkis’ recommendation of Smetana for the position and said interactions between Smetana and the board have been positive.

“The board is excited to see how [Smetana] will handle her new responsibilities,” Sinde said in the release.

Just Irish Enough event raises more than $80K

By KRISTIN PEDICINI kpedicini@shawmedia.com MCCOOK – Almost 200 “shavees” embraced the beauty of going bald at the 2014 Just Irish Enough benefit for St. Baldrick’s on Friday.

The head shaving event, hosted at the MAX in McCook, had 12 barbers in attendance to help the shavees shed their locks. Participants at the benefit could also donate pony tails for the foundation.

One La Grange Park resident eagerly awaiting to donate her hair, was 11-year-old Sophia Schultz. Schultz, who’s been a shavee for the past three years, raised the most money as an individual girl for

the second year in a row.

After raising more than $2,500, Schultz said she shaves for in honor of her best friend Dominic and her grandma.

“I didn’t go for the trophy,” Schultz said. “I did it because it’s for a good cause.”

Including Schultz’s contribution, the Just Irish Enough evening raised $81,813 for St. Baldrick’s this year, according to organizers.

Brian Twomey of La Grange Park raised more than $2,700, bringing in the highest amount for the boys and Eric Fouliard of La Grange Park raised more than $2,800, winning the lead for all participants. Both had their heads shaved as well.

Isaac According to police, officers Sanchez arrived on the scene of a collision between two cars about 8 p.m. March 11. Both vehicles had heavy damage, police said.

Police said Sanchez told police he was driving his 1999 Plymouth in the southbound lanes of First Avenue and when he reached 31st Street, he noticed a van making a leftturn from First Avenue onto 31st Street, tried to stop, but collided with the vehicle.

The second driver, a 38-year-old Elgin resident told police she saw Sanchez driv-

ing at a high rate of speed just before hitting her. Her vehicle had three young passengers, ages 13, 6 and 1. All were transported to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood for minor injuries and were released that night.

Once in police custody, officers said they discovered Sanchez had a revoked driver’s license, which was revoked in 2001. According to police, Sanchez has a record of traffic violations going back to 1994, including driving without a license, driving under the influence, driving with a revoked license and hit-and-run.

Sanchez posted $5,000 bond and was released, police said.

Police said the Elgin resident came back into the police station following her release from the hospital and filed a battery report again Sanchez.

According to police, the woman said Sanchez grabbed her by the arm after the accident, shook her and told her not to call the police.

Police said the battery complaint is still under investigation.

Recognizing those whom support us the most at the library I have read numerous articles and attended a myriad of seminars that convey how important it is to maintain a solid and qualified support staff, no matter what business you may be running. That manner of thinking is especially true with public libraries.

Finding the right mix for a support staff is most often a COMMUNITY struggle, but when people are VOICE in place and life is running Dan along smoothly, it is easy to lose sight of the imporPowers tance of every single valued member.

It makes me think of when you disturb an anthill, and you see all of the ants scrambling to rebuild their wonderful colony. At the Lyons Public Library, we have recently had a couple of employees find it necessary to move on. Our proverbial anthill was disturbed, and we had to scramble in order to fill in the holes.

Everyone from my assistant to the department heads to circulation staff to pages and custodial members all work in tandem in order to make the library run smoothly and (seemingly) effortlessly.

From those who order the books and videos to those who make sure our computers run smoothly to the ones who we rely on to open up in the morning and close down at night, along with those who deliver materials and clean overnight; there is no one whose job is anything but completely imperative.

We must also not forget the significance of Board of Trustee members.

Board members establish policies and long-term goals for the library oversee the budget process and general operations of the library promote and advocate for the library strive for adequate funding levels for library operations and maintain a clear picture of the library’s financial situation.

All of these people are important pages in the book. If some of the pages become loose and fall out of the book, the binding becomes damaged, and the book is incomplete. In order to maintain continuity within the library, it is imperative to maintain a firm support staff. Ultimately, we do all of this to serve our patrons.

I would like to commend the Public Works Department of Western Springs. They have done an excellent job of clearing our streets and repairing broken water mains during this never ending winter. On March 12, I awoke to yet another snowstorm and a huge broken tree limb hanging over our driveway, completely blocking it. Reluctantly I called the village to report it, as if they haven’t already had enough to do. Within a couple of hours a crew came out and took care of the situation. It is very unfortunate the library thought this was an appropriate place for such a display. I understand the significance of his negative impact on our Midwest history. Did the library directors really think it was proper to locate Capone’s display in the children’s section of the library? Perhaps there in lies the problem ... they simply did not think?

If convicted, mail fraud and money laundering charges carry a maximum of 20 years in prison, tax evasion comes with up to five years and filing false returns carries a penalty of up to three years.

Swanson is set to be arraigned April 2 in federal court in Urbana. The government is seeking more than $189,000 from Swanson, along with $7,573, representing a personal money judgment.

SPRINGFIELD – Former Countryside police chief Timothy J. Swanson was indicted on fraud and money-laundering charges March 12.

The charges stemmed from a nonprofit helicopter fundraising program run by Swanson.

Swanson, 55, received a seven-count indictment charging him with money laundering, mail fraud, tax evasion and filing false tax returns for his Illinois Regional Air Support Service, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office for the Central District of Illinois.

The Bourbonnais resident began the program in 2005 after claiming it would utilize U.S. Department of Defense helicopters to support law en-

forcement, according to the indictment.

Swanson allegedly solicited more than $350,000 in donations for the program between 2005 and 2012 from police departments, corporations and individuals, stated in the indictment.

According to the indictment, Swanson made more than $186,000 in personal purchases with the IRASS credit card, used donations to pay off credit cards, lied to get donations and under-reported the money to the IRS. After Swanson allegedly submitted fraudulent invoices to the Illinois Law Enforcement Alarm System for addition grant money in 2006, more than $73,000 was added into the helicopter service’s bank account.

COUNTRYSIDE – Four months after November’s earthquake, blasting activities will resume at the Hanson Material Service Federal Quarry in McCook on Monday.

The blasts – which were voluntarily put on hold after and small earthquake rocked the region Nov. 4 moments after a quarry explosion – can be felt by residents throughout Countryside according to Gail Paul, the city administrator.

“They do have a right to resume blasting,” Paul said.

“The quarry is really dedi-

cated to monitoring the situations.”

While Paul said she expects some residents will be upset about the blasts, she does not expect a second earthquake event similar to the November incident. “[The quarry] is trying to figure out what could be causing this and how to avoid it from happening again,” Paul said.

Blasts happen daily, according to Paul, who said the city usually feels the aftermath around lunch time.

U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski, D-Western Springs, said he plans to continue to keep a

close eye on the quarry and its development. Lipinski was outspoken about the need for federal review of what led to the earthquake and if it was triggered by quarry blasting following Nov. 4 earthquake.

“The safety of the residents of the district is my top priority,” Lipinski said. “I have met or obtained briefings from federal and state regulators, as well as Hanson, throughout the investigation. I am hopeful that this was an isolated incident and precautions are in place to avoid any future damage to the community, but I will not let up on this.”

Resident backs 1920s library display To the Editor: I am sorry [Brookfield resident Giorigo DiPaolo] is so upset about the Brookfield Library Board, but I stand with the library. Part of the board’s function is to preserve the history of the 1920s. Even though he was a gangster, Al Capone was part of our history, and you cannot take that away from him. That would be like saying I am upset because I was born in 1968 when Bobby Kennedy was murdered because someone did not want him to be the next president. I also feel it was partly because he fought against a similar man of that era, Jimmy Hoffa. Another person who was assassinated that year was Martin Luther King Jr. because he wanted equal rights for all African Americans. That was all part of history, and you cannot take what is part of history away. You are an intelligent person with the ability to see our point of view.

ERNEST T. HALVERSON Ernest T. Halverson, age 97, resident of North Riverside for 62 years, passed away March 10, 2014, surrounded by his family.

He served in the US Army during WWII for 39 months.

He was stationed overseas in Europe and received 6 Bronze Star Medals and a Good Conduct Medal.

He retired from ARA Services in Chicago as a salesman.

He was a life member of VFW Post 6869 since 1945 and was Commander from 1990-1991. He served as the VFW National Deputy Chief of Staff from 1993-1994 and the VFW color guard captain. He was a proud member and past Commander of Disabled American Veterans Chapter 22 & Chapter 47.

He was a District Executive Committee member for the DAV. He was a member of the loyal order of Moose for over 50 years. He belonged to the Sons of Norway, Amvets, Combined Veterans' Association of Chicago and served on the village's Zoning Board of Appeals. He was active with the Brookfield Zoo, North Riverside Golden Agers, the Recreation Board and Riverside Fishing Club. He was a Boy Scout of America Scout Master and the North Riverside block captain who began the neighborhood watch program. He was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church where he served as a treasurer and Deacon. He was the first recipient in North Riverside of the Cook County Sheriff's Senior Medal of Honor Award.

Fred W. Anderson, 93, formerly of LaGrange Park and Acacia, passed away on March 11, 2014, in a care facility in Boise, ID. He was a WW II veteran, having served as a bombardier in the 15th Airborn Division of the Army Air Force stationed in Foggia, Italy.

Following the war he worked over 37 years in sales for Swift and Company in Chicago, IL, retiring in 1983.

He is survived by daughter, Barbara Anderson Quist (Hugh), of Boise, ID, grandchildren, Tom Quist of West Des Moines, IA, and Karen Quist Harvey (Aaron) of McCall, ID, and great-grandsons Logan Quist N. MARGARET CARLSON and Walker and Cooper Harvey.

Kick up your appetite at Al’s Char-House LA GRANGE – They say everything’s bigger in Texas, and if that’s the case, then Al’s Char-House not only embodies the stereotype, but celebrates it with platters built for a state-size appetite and portions larger than my forearm.

Even on a freezing winter’s night, downtown La Grange is its same old self with bustling foot traffic, valet services working nonstop and restaurants keeping up with the demand.

Through a set of double doors next to Casa Margarita and down a stairwell, there exists a place in La Grange that could only be described as John Wayne’s subconscious fantasy.

Texas and cowboy memorabilia line every wall from the full-service bar area with fire pit to the multiple levels of a packed and hungry house.

Walking past the terrific Western-themed decor, including cowboy statues, saddles, badges and photographs, it was hard not to notice the king-size platters being brought to tables. I could hear guests saying to each other with a smile how they’ll have leftovers until [insert days in advance here].

As a result, I refrained from ordering an appetizer, but seeing the onion blossom specialty arrive at several tables close by tempted me in ways you could only imagine.

Instead, I resisted and opted for the main course.

The menu’s array of different strips of steak and ribs looked mouthwatering, but being a connoisseur of cheeseburgers, I had to go with the Charburger Plus, described by Al’s as its “super burger,” topped with lettuce, tomato, pickles and onion.

Again, I have to be honest.

Right before going to Al’s, I went to see the new “Hunger Games” movie at the La Grange Theatre, so now eyeing a burger that took up most of my plate made me feel a little guilty. That was before I took the first bite.

The Charburger Plus lives up to its “super burger” billing, and can be on. customized with a variety of toppings.

If there ever were a time I “Is it good?” my mom asked.

But I couldn’t stop to answer her; I was too busy leaving shame at the door as the juices from the burger dripped down to my fingers and then back into my mouth.

My mom could tell what the answer would’ve been as she got started on her Chicken Marsala, two boneless chicken breasts sauteed in wine and

mushrooms. Despite not being able to finish the massive portions, we both enjoyed the leftovers for lunch the next day.

Our server was more than friendly, along with the rest of the staff, who twice during our visit got together to sing a happy birthday to guests.

I managed to request a brownie sundae for dessert, after loosening my belt and

chose wisely to indulge, it was now, as a brownie materialized covered in whipped cream, chocolate syrup and ice cream. My mom couldn’t eat another bite, but, as I said, shame already had been left at the door, so the spoon and my hand became one until the plate was empty.

With its selection of steaks, chicken dinners, kabobs and burgers, Al’s Char-House is a haven for carnivores, but

offers an occasional non-meat dish as an option.

For myself though, and much of the packed house in attendance, meat was the weapon of choice, and I would be happy to rearm at the La Grange steakhouse again.

Outlook: The Lyons had a successful season in every way last year except for the playoffs. After winning the West Suburban Silver and earning a top sectional seed the Lions went out in a regional final.

Enough of that team returned to expect big things again. Senior setter Marko Kostich is headed to play at Harvard after scoring a 36 on his ACT. Returning starters Michael Dean and Rob Watkins also give the team plenty of experience.

Fellow seniors middle hitter Noah Carroll, setter Jack Bobrowski, outside hitter Kevin Bartman and defensive specialists Michael Gay and Andrew Cook are also varsity returners.

Juniors Marshall McElvogue and Jake Suva move up to varsity full time after seeing minimal action with the team last year.

“Having achieved the conference championship and numerous top finishes at tournaments last year, we will push to achieve similar [showings] in 2014,” coach Joann Pyritz said.

Pyritz mentioned York, Glenbard West and Downers Grove North as the top competition in the way of an LT repeat in the Silver.

Outlook: The Bulldogs expect to be a competitive team once again after winning 25 matches last year.

Setter Danny Nava is back as a starter along with Mike Chaney, who started the majority of last season as an outside hitter.

Including Nava and Chaney, the Bulldogs are expected to have key contributions from a number of

seniors. Coach Dan Bonarigo praised 6-foot-3 senior middle hitter Vince Garcia. Fellow senior Pablo Garcia, no relation to Vince, will contribute at both middle and outside positions. Another senior, Nick Green, the younger brother of former standout setter Rich Green, will be the Bulldogs’ defensive leader.

Ben Brondos, a senior who missed last season with an injury, is expected to play a big role as a setter and outside hitter.

Juniors Bobby Peugh, David Wackrow and Zach Paisker could also see plenty of action.

The Bulldogs are still without a conference since the Metro Suburban Conference only fields three boys volley-

Outlook: The Friars lost a three-set match in a regional final last year and return all-conference setter Joey McAuley.

Fenwick won the Chicago Catholic League White for the third year in a row last season. McAuley will need some new weapons to set to after hitter George Cokinis, the CCL White player of the year, graduated.

The Friars open at Mount Carmel on April 7 and have other non-conference matches against Riverside Brookfield and York also on the schedule.

CICERO – After a game at the Proviso West Holiday Tournament this year, a Division I assistant coach went up to Weisner Perez to introduce himself and show interest as a recruiter.

“We’d like to have you come to our campus,” the coach said.

“How are your grades?”

“They’re good, I’m top five in my class,” Weisner said subtly like it was no big deal.

The coach lit up.

“Oh yeah, we’d really like to have you visit our campus,” he said excitedly.

That’s what makes Perez so special. The Morton junior forward has the skill set to earn an athletic scholarship from a Division I program and the grades to earn academic scholarships if he never stepped foot on a basketball court.

Perez’s combination of athletic talent, practiced skill, work ethic and intelligence made him one of the best players in the area and should make him one of the best players in the state next year. For his impressive season with Morton, Perez is the Suburban Life boys basketball all-area team MVP. Initially, Morton coach Tony Martinucci knew that Perez would be good when he was in junior high, but still had trouble finding Perez a good AAU program to play with. He convinced Illinois Wolves coach Mike Mullins to take him in.

Meet the all-area team Here are Suburban Life Media’s 2014 boys basketball selections The boys basketball postseason is nearing its end with state finals

for classes 3A and 4A taking place this weekend. That means it’s

time to take a look at the 2013-14 boys basketball all-area team.

School: St. Joseph Year: Junior Impact: Ash and backcourt mate Glynn Watson took over the team this season as juniors and the Chargers were able to win 23 games and a third straight regional title. The 6-foot-1 guard, who was second-team all-tournament at Proviso West, has college offers from multiple Big Ten schools.

School: Nazareth Year: Senior Impact: The Roadrunner guard was the team’s lone all-conference selection in the tough East Suburban Catholic Conference.

Brooks transferred from St. Joseph and immediately made an impact. Nazareth had a young team this year and his ability to make a play was crucial.

School: Morton Year: Senior Impact: Carter really turned it on late in the season, hearing “M-V-P” chants from the Morton student section during the team’s two sectional games in which he scored 35 and 27 points. He was a four-year varsity player and three-year starter at point guard with killer quickness and big-time shooting range.

School: Fenwick Year: Senior Impact: The Friar big man averaged about 12 points and eight rebounds per game and helped Fenwick win 22 games and a regional title for the second year in a row. At 6-foot-8, he was a big part of the team’s success against a tough schedule.

School: Riverside Brookfield Year: Senior Impact: The baseball star showed he has some game on the court as well. Kincanon took over as a key guard and was one of just two seniors on the team this season. He earned Metro Suburban all-conference honors while helping the Bulldogs win conference for the 13th year in a row.

School: Lyons Township Year: Junior Impact: It’s no secret why Niego is drawing interest from Division I schools. The junior guard led the Lions in scoring at 15.6 points per game while dishing out 3.8 assists per contest. Niego has a good all-around game with the ability to score with his shot or off the drive and can create shots for his teammates.

School: Morton Year: Junior Impact: The all-area MVP was already a standout last year, but in his second year starting on varsity Perez added to his game. He went from a strictly interior player to a well-rounded forward with a good jump shot and developing ballhandling skills. He also refined his inside game becoming an elite rebounder and a tough shot blocker.

School: St. Joseph Year: Sophomore Impact: It didn’t take long for the 6-foot-10 Rakocevic to make an impact on varsity basketball. The sophomore forward already has offers from the likes of Wisconsin and Illinois and has plenty more to give St. Joseph in two more years of high school.

School: Fenwick Year: Sophomore Impact: When Northwestern-bound Scott Lindsey was out for much of the season because of injury, Smith emerged as the Friars’ top scoring guard.

The 5-foot-9 guard’s explosive scoring ability helped the team not only survive without Lindsey but prove to be one of the better teams in the state.

School: Riverside Brookfield Year: Senior Impact: The 6-foot-8 forward did not have the typical skills of a big man.

Leave him open for three and he will burn you. Try to take away his shot and he can dribble or pass to create for a teammate. The lanky VandeMerkt continued the success of the family name at RB as the team’s leading scorer and an all-conference selection.

School: St. Joseph Year: Junior Impact: Watson, like teammate Jordan Ash, is a coveted Division I recruit.

The 5-foot-11 guard is capable of taking over a game at any moment. Watson was a second-team all-tournament pick at Proviso West and helped the Chargers share the Catholic League North title.

Scaman hits more prefect scores

Riverside native and Oklahoma sophomore Haley Scaman scored her third perfect 10 of the season on Friday. What’s even more impressive about the perfect scores is that they have come in two different events. The most recent 10 came on vault in a victory for the No. 2 Sooners against No. 16 Arkansas. Scaman is the first Sooner in program history to earn three perfect 10s as well as the first to do so on multiple events. Earlier this season Scaman, who was the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year as a freshman, scored perfect 10s two different times on floor exercise.

The website HubArkush. com is now ChicagoFootball. com. The new site will provide in-depth news and analysis of the Bears, along with extensive information about the NFC North division and coverage of all 32 NFL teams.

The site also will provide analysis of local high school and college programs as the 2014 season approaches.

In addition to Arkush, Chicago Football contributors include Shaw Media’s Kevin Fishbain and Tom Musick, and the Daily Herald’s premier Bears expert Bob LeGere

and fantasy football analyst John Dietz. Veteran designer and editor Bob Peters – who previously worked with Arkush at Pro Football Weekly – also joined the Chicago Football team. Arkush indicated that he is in the process of hiring additional staff.

Chicago Football will be headquartered at the Daily Herald offices in Arlington Heights.

Arkush noted the time is right for this venture.

“The NFL’s popularity is at an all-time high, and many fans have an affiliation

with at least one college and high school program while many follow more than one,” Arkush said. “Chicago Football will be unique in its look at the sport from a geographical perspective, and our singular focus will allow us to go more in-depth than other media.”

Chicago Football’s NFL Draft Preview edition will be available on newsstands April 7. The magazine can be purchased at area newsstands or included as part of an annual subscription, available at ChicagoFootball.com.

There will be NAYS tournaments at Elmhurst College from April 25 to 27 and at Romeoville High School from May 2 to 4.

Shaw Media and Daily Herald Media Group recently announced the launch of Chicago Football, a print and digital sports media franchise covering high school, college and professional football. Veteran football analyst and Chicago-area sports personality Hub Arkush will spearhead the initiative.

The first edition of Chicago Football magazine hits newsstands in early April and will focus on the Chicago Bears’

preparation for the 2014 NFL Draft. The first edition will include exclusive interviews with head coach Marc Trestman and general manager Phil Emery. It also will break down the professional prospects of Chicago-area players, including Chris Watt (Glen Ellyn) and others.

In print, Chicago Football will be a glossy magazine published weekly during the football season and monthly in the offseason. The publishers also plan to produce several annual football guides to be distributed nationally.
