Get your chess sets ready

St. Mary School Golden Bishops Chess Club in Riverside will host its second-annual all-area chess tournament for grades K-8 on March 16 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at St. Mary School, 97 Herrick Road. The tournament will award trophies or medals to the top 10 scorers in two divisions, grades K-3 and 4-8. The best school team in each division also will receive a trophy. Chess sets will be provided, and each child will play five rounds. The cost is $40 per student and includes a pizza lunch. A paid concession stand will be available for adults. Registration information is available by calling 847-5599033 or via email to anna@chessscholars.com. “Chess has gained tremendous popularity in the last several years and is a great alternative to video games and television,” said the school’s chess club coach, Colette Fairchild-Saganich. “St. Mary is looking forward to hosting another great tournament this year. Bryks, who has taught at the school for more than 30 years, recently won a Grammy Award through her work with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra on the soundtrack to the movie, “Lincoln.”

She was awarded two official certificates documenting her as a Grammy winner. “The kids at school were very excited,” Bryks said. And it’s with no less enthusiasm and passion that Bryks

speaks about her work at St. Francis Xavier. “I didn’t have music in school when I grew up, which I regretted,” Bryks said. “It’s one of the reasons I became a teacher.” It’s a career she said she loves. She approaches the subject with a hands-on mentality. “You do music — you don’t read about it,” Bryks said. That’s why she encourages her students to do a public performance, including in church choirs, starting in kindergarten. “It’s rewarding,” Bryks said. “To see how enthusiastic they are. It’s an exciting thing and it’s something they will always keep with them.” She admits there are challenges, especially in keeping the music relevant to the middle school crowd while still upholding standards. That’s why, when teaching musical concepts, she in-

corporates both classical and modern music, including Dave Matthews Band, to show students that the concepts remain the same. “But it’s not always easy,” Bryks said. And although there are difficulties, the rewards far outnumber them, which is why Bryks has continued to bring music to her students for more than 30 years. “When I first taught children of students, I thought it was crazy,” Bryks said. “Now there are teachers at this school who are former students of mine.” While she loves both professions, singing and teaching, with equal fervor, Bryks admits juggling both is a challenge. “There are not enough hours in the day,” Bryks said. “I breathe in September and when I exhale, it’s December and Christmas.”

In May, Diane Bryks was asked if she, along with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, could do a recording for a motion picture. She wasn’t told what movie and she was forced to sign non-disclosure form after non-disclosure form. “I made myself available for it,” Bryks said. “Even the contract didn’t say what movie it was.” So the St. Francis Xavier School music teacher and Berwyn resident went during the day to Orchestra Hall Recording Studio in Chicago and performed pieces written by famous film conductor John Williams with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Months later, she, along with other members of the CSO, were brought into a private screening of the film before its release last November. It was there she heard her performance in the Oscar-nominated Steven Spielberg film, “Lincoln.” “I was very honored to be part of that,” Bryks said. “At the end, the entire audience was silent listening to the music during the credits. It was a different experience.” The score for the film was nominated for an Oscar, although it lost to Mychael Danna’s score for “Life of Pi.” Still, for Bryks, the experience was a good one in a career full of them. Bryks, who started teaching at St. Francis Xavier School in La Grange in 1976, is an accomplished professional member of the Chicago Symphony Chorus and two-time Grammy winner. In 2010, the Chicago Symphony Chorus won Grammys for Best Classical Album and Best Choral Performance for “Guiseppe Verdi: Messa da Requiem” with Riccardo Multi as conductor, Christopher Alder as producer and Duain Wofe as chorus director. “We knew we were in the

Local students win American Legion Essay Contest SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA LA GRANGE — Eight middle and high school students received awards on Feb. 20 in the annual American Legion Essay Contest sponsored by the Robert E. Coulter, Jr., Post and Auxiliary in La Grange. Students competed in two categories according to their grade level. Thomas McGing, an eighth-grader from St. Cletus School, won first place in the middle school category for grades 7 to 8. Lyons Township High School junior Karenna Lange won first place in the high school competition.

Caroline Wuerl, an eighth-grader at St. Cletus School, took second place; Leanna Keen, an eighth-grader from St. Louise de Marillac School, won third place; and Austin Iturralde, an eighth-grader from St. John’s Lutheran School, won fourth place in the middle school category. Three LT juniors — Jakub Dziza, Alex Torres and Megan Rada — won second, third and fourth place, respectively, in the high school competition. Students were challenged to write an essay on the topic, “What does the First Amendment mean to me?” as part of a

statewide contest sponsored by the American Legion organization in Illinois. La Grange first-place winners McGing and Lange will now compete with winners from across suburban Cook County. Competition will continue up the American Legion’s regional organization until the best essays in the state are chosen in June. Students whose essays win at the state level can take home up to $1,200 in scholarship awards. The Robert E. Coulter, Jr., Post and Auxiliary is located at 900 South La Grange Road in La Grange.

8NEWS BRIEFS Police urge caution after string of burglaries

BROOKFIELD — Brookfield police had three burglary calls within 24 hours last week and are urging residents to be on their toes for anything suspicious in their neighborhood. The burglaries occurred in the 4500 block of Oak Avenue, 4400 block of Deyo Avenue and the 4600 block of Maple Avenue. Stolen items include firearms, TVs, computers, video game systems, purses and jewelry. Police also said suspects are most likely knocking on

doors to determine if anyone is home. Entry is often gained through doors and windows away from street view. Exercise caution with solicitors or anyone appearing at the home. Most burglaries are occurring between 7 a.m. and 8:30 p.m., police said. Any suspicious activity should be reported by calling 911.

When Paul Heatherington was a 22-year-old living in Berwyn, he made a decision that would change the rest of his life. He bought a pizza place in a town he knew little about: Romeoville. “I looked at it and said, ‘Let’s do it. Let’s take the chance,’” the Westchester native said. “I had $1,000 in my bank account. My partner told me I was going to sign my life away and I did.” And although it put him in “mega debt at a quarter of a million dollars” at the ripe age of 22, it was, he said, one of

Was I scared to death? Yes. I remember selling my Jeep because I needed the cash for rent. Thank god I have a restaurant, at least I had a place to eat. I remember I was 21 when I went to the Village of Romeoville to get a liquor license. When people turn 21, they get a drink. Me, I got a liquor license.

Why did you decide upon the name Ats-A-Nice Pizza?

Back in the old days, you looked in the phone book for a business and you always wanted to be first in the book. You wanted to catch the customers. I always tell people I couldn’t spell.

How do you look back on what you’ve done in 25 years of business?

I’m proud of what I accomplished. In 25 years of business, I’ve never had a down year. Business, like the town, has consistently grown. And I still love coming in every day. I’m still stressed out of my mind. I can’t believe I haven’t had an ulcer. But you deal with it. You take it. You can’t let it kill you.

At age 65, you are eligible to sign up for Medicare part B, covering outpatient service. Say you plan to work past 65 and plan to stay on the company health plan; sign up anyway. It’s true that you can continue with your employer’s group plan, but insurers for small firms consider Medicare the primary payer. Indeed, if they pay claims before they know the covered individual is over 65, they may try to recoup benefits they’ve already paid. Once you leave the job, though, you must sign up with Medicare within eight months – the “special enrollment period”, even if you’re still covered by the company plan. Miss that deadline, and you can’t sign up until the following January 1 to March 31, and coverage won’t start until July. And there may be considerable late penalties, too.

COUNTRYSIDE — Several young gymnasts from Flying High Gym in Countryside had a chance to compete in the Sand Dollar meet against gymnasts from various states at the ESPN Sports Complex in Orlando the weekend of Jan. 26 to 27. Alison Jacobs, a level-four gymnast who lives in Western Springs, brought home fourth place medals in both the bars and floor events, finishing fifth all-around in the Junior A division. Her teammate, Emma Moody, a Western Springs resident, earned a second-place medal on the vault and finished sixth-place allaround with a score of 36.150. Level-five girls competing in the Junior B category captured several ribbons. Melissa Rucinski, a La Grange resident, earned the first-place award on the vault, following it up with a

tie for fourth-place on the balance beam to finish sixth allaround with a score of 36.525. Teammate Lauren Pocica, from Hickory Hills, ranked third for her uneven parallel bars routine, and Gina Leonard of Indian Head Park not only tied for second place on the vault, but also tied for fourth on the balance beam with Rucinski. Westchester resident Cate Bonanno competed in the level-five Junior A division earning fourth-place ribbons for both the bars and beam, and a first-place for vault, finishing fourth-place allaround with a score of 34.975. Sonia Slusarczyk, a Berwyn resident, actually skipped a level this year, going from level five to level seven. Two cases of identity theft reported

On Feb. 20, a Brookfield couple told police someone had opened a BP credit card and wracked up $1,603 in charges. That same day, another resident reported receiving a note from the state of Arizona seeking $2,000 in back taxes. The 34-year-old man told police he had never lived nor worked in that state.

Jewelry, game system reported stolen

Residents in the 4500 block of Raymond Avenue reported someone had broken into their home sometime between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. Feb. 21. They reported jewelry and a video game system were missing. Reports did not indicate a value of the missing items.

RIVERSIDE Traffic stop results in drug charges

A 20-year-old Stickney man was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of marijuana with intent to distribute following a traffic stop at 4 p.m. Feb. 16 in the 3300 block of Harlem Avenue in Riverside. Jacob K. Cherry also was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia. Cherry, originally pulled over for not wearing a seat belt, admitted to the officer that he was in possession of marijuana and the investigation discovered 13 small individually packaged bags that contained a substance that field-tested positive for marijuana. Drug paraphernalia was located during a search, along with scales, baggies and other items in relation to the possible distribution of drugs. Field testing at the scene could not positively identify additional suspected drug substances found. Additional felony charges may be pursued depending on the results from a state crime lab.

Houses struck by paintball shooter Police are investigating five incidents of vandalism with a paintball gun that occurred overnight between Feb. 23 and 24. The Riverside residences were struck with multiple yellow and white paintball marks.

Village gas lamp damaged in crash

A resident received a traffic citation for improper backing and a citation for damage to village property after striking a village-owned gas lamp in the 100 block of Lawton Road with her car at 7:16 p.m. Feb. 19. Gas service to the lamp was shut off until repairs could be made.

Hit and run investigated

Police investigated a report of a hit and run near 35th Street and Harlem Avenue about 2:28 p.m. Feb. 19. Officers cited Alex Tavera of Chicago with improper lane use and driving without proof of insurance following the investigation that may have stemmed from an earlier alleged altercation between Tavera and the driver of the other vehicle.

Domestic battery charged

Jill Hennessy, unknown age, of the 200 block of Southcote Road was charged with domestic battery about 11:30 p.m. Feb. 19 after allegedly striking her husband in the back multiple times.

DUI charged

• Conrad Huerta, 19, of Cicero was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after police allegedly witnessed him run a traffic light at Ogden Avenue and 39th Street about 2:47 a.m. Feb. 23. • Sergio Toscano, 39, of Merrionett Park was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and leaving the scene of an accident near Harlem Avenue and Quincy Street at 1:02 a.m. Feb. 24.

Citizens’ Council to host candidates forum March 13

Brookfield Zoo held International Polar Bear Day on Feb. 27. The goal of the event was to raise awareness among visitors of the problems faced by polar bears as a result of climate change.

Brookfield Zoo offered people the opportunity last week to contemplate the fate of polar bears and how they can make a difference. The zoo held International Polar Bear Day on Feb. 27. Visitors were encouraged to think about how climate change is adversely impacting polar bears. This was a good way to help focus people’s attention on a serious problem and what they can do to help. Beginning March 14, the North Riverside Police Department will offer its Citizens Police Academy from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursdays until May 16. The program will consist of 10 two-hour training sessions. The goal is to educate residents and business owners about the structure and activities of their police department. Registration deadline is March 6. To the Editor: In La Grange, the April 9 election for offices in our village government will present voters with important decisions. Because all 12 offices on the ballot are for four-year terms, voters will be selecting candidates who will help set the leadership and direction of La Grange until 2017 and perhaps beyond. On the ballot, voters will find the names of 18 candidates, the most names in more than 30 years, according to local records. Most people may not find a new study by Pew Research Center exciting reading. But as a library director, I was thrilled to find that the La Grange Park Library is on the cutting edge of what people say they want and need from their libraries. Pew reported in January that 80 percent of Americans said that being able to borrow books was “very important” to them. We weren’t surprised that it also found that a growing number of people want wider availability of technology-based services such as online research (37 percent), app-based services (35 percent) and the opportunity to try digital devices (35 percent). More than half (53 percent) want a broader selection of e-books. There were three numbers I found especially interesting. While 91 percent of Americans say that libraries are very important to their communities, only 22 percent know about all the services that their libraries offer and 31 percent said they didn’t know much at all. We are working to change that. The La Grange Park Library is applying technology in a variety of ways. We offer everything from computer classes to free Wi-Fi to more

8NEWS BRIEFS Riverside police announce DUI arrests for 2012

RIVERSIDE — The Riverside Police Department announced 124 arrests on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs were made in 2012, an increase of 10.7 percent over 2011. Most of those DUI arrests occurred after 11 p.m. According to the National Traffic Safety Association, one in five Americans have driven within two hours of drinking alcohol in the past year. Four out of five Americans have identified drunken driving as a major threat to their own and their family’s safety, the NTSA reports.

Switchback to play at Riverside library

RIVERSIDE – The Riverside Public Library will host a special concert featuring the band Switchback, who will perform a concert at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 7, at the Riverside Public Library, 1 Burling Road. The concert will feature an eclectic mix of country, blues, swing and Irish music, plus a selection of songs from Switchback’s award-winning catalog of more than 300 original tunes that express their blend of Celtic and American Midwest experiences.

Riverside police to increase enforcement

RIVERSIDE — Soon the Riverside Police Department’s Intensified Traffic Enforcement unit will be back in action targeting areas of concern where traffic enforcement is greatly needed. A targeted area is saturated with up to seven officers enforcing the traffic laws. This program has been in place and has been successful

since its 2010 inception. It is run by Sgt. William Gutschick and supervised by Sgt. Leo Kotor. Targeted areas are schools and any other areas where violations are flagrant and ongoing. Since the unit began, there have been 273 citations issued (speeding, crosswalk violations, school zone speeding, using a cellphone within school zone and more). There have been six arrests and six vehicles towed.

Madrigals to pair with Plymouth Place singers

LA GRANGE PARK — The Lyons Township High School Sophomore Madrigal group will pair with the Plymouth Place choir at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Plymouth Place, 315 N. La Grange Road, La Grange Park. Each chorus will sing three or four songs, with LT performing “Viva la Musica, O occhi manza mia,” an Italian Madrigal, and “In These Delightful Pleasant Groves,” an English madrigal, while the Plymouth Place choir will sing several Irish folksongs. Then, the LT singers will join the residents’ chorus on the Irish folksong “Mairi’s Wedding.”

WESTERN SPRINGS — The Lyons Township High School Car Care Club recently competed in the state Hot Rodders Of Tomorrow engine rebuild competition and qualified for the national competition. RIVERSIDE — For the last two seasons, Riverside Brookfield boys basketball has been led by Damonta Henry and Miki Ljuboja. The two seniors were the first two names on the scouting report and the top priority for the opposition. Thursday’s loss to Conant in the regional semifinal marked the end of that era for RB. Henry, who has been on varsity for three years, and Ljuboja, who started in both of his two varsity seasons, saw their high school careers Miki come to a close in the 67-61 loss. It was the second time the Ljuboja Bulldogs lost to Conant this year. The Cougars also beat RB in the semifinals of the Jack Tosh Holiday Classic. Henry and Ljuboja Game box were two of nine se67 niors for RB this sea- Conant son. They’ve done things the right way and I thank them for their efforts. “We won over 20 games, we won the conference title and we ran into a very tough team in the first round.” In Thursday’s game, neither team held a lead of more than four until Conant used a 9-0 run to take a 38-29 lead in the third quarter. The lead got up to 10 before an 11-0 RB run early in the fourth quarter gave the Bulldogs (21-7) a 48-46 lead. The Cougars responded with another run, scoring 10 straight points to go up 61-51. RB fought back and Henry had a three-point try in the final minute to tie the score, but the shot missed and the Cougars made enough free throws to hold onto the lead. “I thought we played hard, left it all on the floor,” said RB coach Tom McCloskey. “I thought we played well, but we just didn’t have enough to get over the hump.”

Coach Bill Lanspeary plans to move his all-state returner from the back line to a role in central midfield. “She’s clearly one of our best players,” Lanspeary said. “We think she can really control the midfield and add something to the attack.” Lanspeary thinks there is enough cover in defense to allow for Kowalski to play in the midfield. The Lions don’t have any senior defenders, but plenty of players with varsity experience. Juniors Catherine King and C.C. Holbert along with sophomore Liza Gabrek are returners. Junior Sarah Drew and freshman Izzy Scott also expect to get playing time as varsity newcomers. Up top, Abbie Pasquinelli and Emily Lange figure to key the attack. Lange had a big scoring freshman season, but couldn’t match that last year. In the midfield, Lanspeary is looking for a breakout season from junior Erin Fitzgerald to go with Kowalski. In net, the Lions will have to replace Maggie Orlowski, an all-state selection last year. Lanspeary has three candidates for the spot but, without outdoor practice time, hasn’t been able to narrow it down yet. LT will take part in the Naperville Invite and the Pepsi Showdown to highlight a difficult schedule. Lanspeary is hoping to make a run in both, but after the Lions won the West Suburban
