1. Park re-imagined What happened: With the
cut of a ribbon, Brookfield’s Kiwanis Park, 8820 Brookfield Ave., reopened Sept. 20 following an an extensive renovation that took place over the past year. Village officials and guests cut a ribbon to inaugurate the new band shell at a re-opening celebration that featured bands, canoeing, food and a host of activities. The village received $260,300 through an Open Space Land Acquisition and Development grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and contributed another $300,000 for the project. The grants allowed for improvements to storm water drainage, walkways, volleyball courts, basketball courts, a horseshoe pit and a Frisbee golf course, as well as the construction of a new band shell. A bioswale makes use of permeable pavers to collect storm water runoff. Additional funding was provided by state Rep. Michael Zalewski, D-Riverside,

across from Village Hall before to the May 7 board meeting. Supporters of the village’s decision and those opposed once again crammed into the village’s meeting room to trade barbs at one another and voice their opinion on the issue. Opponents, which included residents from Brookfield concerned about how the Lyons police layoffs would affect their police force, largely accused the village, and President Christopher Getty specifically, with putting residents in danger. The village defended the layoffs as a cost-cutting measure. Trustee Patricia Krueger warned trustees that the village could face a dangerous situation if more officers weren’t added to shifts. Quote of note: “You can’t have police officers working 18 hours a day. It’s an accident waiting to happen,” Patricia Krueger said. Number of officers removed from the police force of 23 officers.

Continued from page 3 to close Robinson School in Lyons Nov. 6, not flu. A large number of absences led to the decision to close the school at 4431 Gage Avenue and school officials posted a note on the school website stating the flu was the cause. However, Cook County Department of Public Health spokeswoman Amy Poore said the influenza virus was not the cause of the large number of reported sick students at the school. “It’s commonly called the stomach flu – but there’s no such thing as stomach flu,” Poore said. The likely culprit was a norovirus, which can cause fever, a range of gastrointestinal problems and is highly contagious. Poore said the norovirus is easily spread, especially in environments like schools where kids are in close contact with one another. District 103 Superintendent Mary Jo Vladika said the Department of Public Health suggested school officials to close the school for a deep cleaning. Nazareth Academy in La

9. Farewell, Judy What happened: News of the
death Illinois comptroller and Riverside resident Judy Baar Topinka came as a shock to many of those in her Riverside community who remembered her as a larger-than-life person-
ality who never forgot where she came from. Riverside Village President Ben Stills said “The passing of Judy Baar Topinka leaves an unfillable void. She exemplified all that is good in public service.” Age of Judy Baar Topinka when she died following a stroke Dec. 10.

Grossdale Station at 8820 1/2 Brookfield Avenue celebrated
its 125th anniversary Oct. 26 with the help of the Brookfield Historical Society. In 1889, developer Samuel Eberly Gross constructed a railroad station on the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy rail line. He would shortly thereafter construct two more stations, and used those three stops as selling points for his lots and houses in the Brookfield area. Today, only one of these stations remains, which is now used to house the Brookfield Historical Society.

11. Last call What happened: Oct. 13 was
last call for early morning drinkers in Brookfield after the Village Board voted unanimously to eliminate 4 a.m. licenses effective Jan. 21, 2015. The controversial licenses came under fire by police officials, who made a case to the board that the late night license is a magnet for nuisance complaints and trouble. Owners of those bars that still have a Class 1 license to stay open until 4 a.m Fridays and Saturdays said losing the added hours would have a devastating impact on business. Quote of note: “Brixie’s is celebrating its 80th year. Being a late night bar is the reason we have been able to stay in business,” said Brixie’s owner Christopher DiBraccio. The number of bars with 4 a.m. licenses at the time of the decision – Brixie’s Salon, Traxx Side Bar and Grill and Cordial Inn.

Members & Non Members Welcome
in a one bedroom house made of plaster and stone. I had come down the chimney with presents to give, and to see just who in this little house lived. As I looked all about, a strange sight I did see, No tinsel, no presents, not even a tree. No stockings by mantle, just boots filled with sand, On the wall hung pictures of far distant lands. With medals and badges, awards of all kinds, A sobering thought came through my mind For this house was different, it was dark and dreary, The home of a Soldier, I could now see clearly. The Soldier lay sleeping, silent, alone, Curled up on the floor in this one bedroom home. The face was so gentle, the room in such disorder, Not how I picture a United States Soldier Was this the Hero of whom I’d just read? Curled up on a pancho, the floor for a bed? I realized the families that I saw this night, owed their lives to these Soldiers who were willing to fight. Soon round the world, the children would play, and grownups would celebrate a bright Christmas Day. They all enjoyed freedom each month of the year, because of the Soldiers, like the one lying here. I couldn’t help wondering how many lay alone, on a cold Christmas Eve in a land far from home. The very thought brought a tear to my eye, I dropped to one knee and started to cry. The Soldier awakened and I heard a rough voice, “Santa don’t cry, for this life is my choice.” “I fight for freedom. I don’t ask for more,” “My life is my God, my Country, my Corps.” The Soldier rolled over and drifted to sleep, I couldn’t control it, I continued to weep. I kept watch for hours, so silent and still, as we both shivered from the cold night’s chill. I didn’t want to leave, on that cold, dark night, this Guardian Of Honor, so willing to fight. Then the Soldier rolled over, with a voice soft and pure, whispered, “Carry on Santa.....It’s Christmas Day....., All is secure.” One look at my watch, and I knew he was right, Merry Christmas my friend....and to all a Good Night.
God Bless the U.S. Military... each and every one of them!

Riverside police out in force during holidays SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA RIVERSIDE – The Riverside Police Department will be out in force through Jan. 4 as part of the Illinois Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over crackdown on drunken drivers. The statewide crackdown will include high-visibility alcohol and belt enforcement throughout Riverside. Police will be aggressively looking
for drunken drivers during the crackdown and will arrest anyone caught driving drunk. In addition, front and back seat belt law violators will be ticketed. Riverside police are giving fair warning to all partygoers, Chief Tom Weitzel said, and reminded motorists drunken driving charges can result in jail time, the loss of a driver’s license, higher insurance
rates, attorney fees, court costs and the possibility of losing employment. The crackdown is funded by federal traffic safety funds through the Illinois Department of Transportation. Driver’s are encouraged to use public transportation, cabs or to designate a sober driver when drinking during the holiday season to get around.

Looking back at 2014 at the McCook library As I reflect back on my first year as library director at the McCook Public Library, I am delighted at the progress made this past year and the vision the Board of Trustees, staff and I have for the future of this organization. Although I have been a library director at two libraries in Illinois and Iowa with larger staffs and budgets, I have COMMUNITY found extreme satisfaction in VOICE being a hands-on director and Elisa F. getting to personally know each of our library patrons. It Topper amazes me this small community of 228 people managed to create a library more than 40 years ago and recently funded an addition in 2011. The library is a hidden gem of an aesthetically pleasing building and a staff providing exceptional customer service. The comments we get from first time visitors is “Wow, what a nice library!” This past year, we installed Wi-Fi access, a Facebook presence and in the next month, we will launch a new website. Are you tired of being on a wait list for the current bestsellers for months at your local library? Are you looking for that eclectic jazz compact disc or current copy of the Breaking Bad series? We have it for you. We welcome you to come to our library to check out our copies. With your current library card (in good standing) from neighboring libraries, you are able to take these items home and return them to your local library. For residents in Countryside and Indian Head Park or other communities that do not have a public library, nonresident cards are available for purchase based on your tax bill or renter’s fee. Some will even reimburse a portion of the library card fee. For employees that work for area businesses, we welcome you to visit during a lunch hour or after work to pick up that current best-seller or check out a current magazine or DVD. We launched a new program, Coffee and Conversation, from 11 a.m. to noon the third Tuesday of the month where people drop in for lively conversation and delicious pastries as they meet a variety of people from neighboring suburbs. Our next meeting is scheduled Jan. 20. Look for our upcoming open house and date for our annual book/magazine sale. We also have comfortable areas for reading and study rooms available for you. Stop by with your children or grandkids to see our adorable children’s room and book collection and our weekly story hour from 4 to 5 p.m. Fridays. The staff and I look forward to seeing you very soon.

Thumbs up to Brookfield police officers and friends of the police department who took part in the annual Shop With a Cop event. The children who got a chance to take part in this event no doubt will have lasting memories of their day going gift shopping with a police officer. Sharing the stories that impact the people who live and work in Riverside and Brookfield is our passion, and it’s an honor to be part of the community. As we prepare to gather with family and friends, we wish everyone a happy holidays and new year, and we look forward to experiencing the stories of 2015 with you.

SOUND OFF
Media needs to stop sensationalizing
I certainly agree with last week’s article “Officer was doing his job.” The media needs to stop building this up and antagonizing people. They are somewhat responsible for all the protests. The officer was doing his job.

Do not sign referendum for Downers Grove
I encourage you to not sign any referendum for a new police station and fire station on Ogden Avenue. For 30 years the residents of Burlington Highlands and Orchard Brook have had to put our lives on the line to try to enter onto Ogden Avenue or to exit into the Highlands from Og-

den Avenue. With the increased toll fees, there has been a huge increase in traffic on Ogden and a big increase of semi trucks using Ogden now to avoid toll fees. We have been trying to get a control signal between Saratoga and Belmont for 30 years to no avail. Anyone who thinks there is no problem needs only to witness the hazard between 4 p.m. 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. every day with the amount of traffic. Regardless what the cost is to put the new station on Ogden Avenue in order to get a controlled signal, it will be worth every dollar to insure the safety of our residents in our area. I encourage the council to proceed with the project.

I’d like to remind readers of the Sound Off column that, as the guidelines clearly state the comments “should not be taken as fact.” Several recent comments about the Glen Ellyn Park District, which all appear to be from the same person, are misleading at best and, in some cases, simply not true. For the record, a routine exit poll survey is being conducted, based on support from a majority of the board, and will cost about 10 cents per resident; it is not a “pool survey.” The proposed turf at Newton Park represents the best price negotiated by a purchasing cooperative commonly used by public agencies, and is far from “the most expensive turf option.” It has yet to be decided which features will be included. I would encourage all readers to contact the Park District, or visit their website, for accurate information.

I’m going to start my own protest right here, and it’s against people in the western suburbs making ignorant comments about the rights of other people. Can you imagine what kind of riots there would if people could not pass judgment on people from other ethnic and social economic backgrounds? It would make Ferguson look like Disneyland.

COUNTRYSIDE – There wasn’t a person in attendance at a memorial conducted Dec. 17 for the late Illinois Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka who didn’t remark on her feisty personality, humor and commitment to the people of Illinois when asked their impression of the longtime public servant. Topinka, who requested that no wake or funeral be held, did allow for her family, friends and colleagues to remember her with a memorial service a week after she died of a stroke. Perhaps her request not to have a funeral was to avoid holding a somber affair in her name. Topinka, a longtime Riverside resident, was well known for – as many remarked at the memorial – being someone who would have wanted the room upbeat. To that end, the memorial would have been a success in her eyes. Attendees fondly recalled her spirited personality and her unique touch as a politician in Illinois. Cook County Commis sioner Jeff Tobolski said he thought of Topinka as a mentor and highly respected her ability to work across the aisle – or with anyone for that matter – to get the job done. “[Topinka] always saw things through to the end,” Tobolski recalled. “What a great loss for the state of Illinois.” As Gov.-elect Bruce Rauner also would recall during his remarks, Tobolski said just days following her death, he received a tin of holiday cookies from Topinka. Tobolski said gifts like that were not uncommon, and he fondly recalled receiving her signature newspaper clippings with notes when she felt a good job was done by the recipient. Likewise, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle said she admired Topinka for her straightforward manner and ability to speak her mind. “I gave her high marks for honesty,” Preckwinkle said. The memorial began with a

Joseph Birkett, judge for the second district of Illinois Appellate Court and Topinka’s running mate during her 2006 bid for the governor’s mansion, led as master of ceremonies. He recalled picking Topinka up at 6 a.m. the first morning of the 2006 campaign. With her trademark large coffee in hand, she got into the car with Birkett only to have the bottom of it fall out on her lap. “It’s a good thing I wore dark pants; let’s go,” he recalled her saying. Gov. Pat Quinn remembered Topinka in his remarks as a politician who went the extra mile and then some. “She volunteered for very difficult and challenging assignments throughout her life,” Quinn said. “She was always known for telling the truth – a truth teller … she spoke from her heart and told the truth.” Considered a political outsider, especially early in her career, she served as a politician to the beat of her own drum and knew how to get people to work together – even when it might put her opposite her party and open her to criticism. She was a Republican that was pro-gay marriage, pro-union and pro-choice.

Brookfield resident to open piano bar By KRISTIN PEDICINI kpedicini@shawmedia.com LA GRANGE – A restaurant doubling as a piano bar and pub is making its way to the La Grange area next month. Adele’s Front Room, 13 S. La Grange Road, is projected to open Jan. 30, owner Brian Carrol said, explaining the restaurant gets both its name and opening date from his grandmother. Adele was his grand mother’s name, and the opening date was her birthday. The restaurant is even themed after one of her sayings, “Hum a few bars, and we’ll play it by ear,” he said. “We came from a big family, and that’s how we grew up,” Carrol said. “[She] was always around the piano singing and showing everyone a good time,

even if they weren’t family.” The idea for Adele’s Front Room is small-plated food to share with craft cocktails, a variety of beers, nice wine and piano music, he said. As for the food menu, Carrol said a specific genre has yet to be decided, but he plans to pay special attention to the way the restaurant serves and cooks the food and the way each dish tastes. “We’re letting our service speak for ourselves,” Carrol said. “We want everyone that walks through the door to enjoy themselves.” Although Carrol has already secured the restaurant’s business and liquor license, he’s still waiting on architectural drawings. “I really want to get this open, but I want to get it open the right way and that requires a lot of time,” he said.
Opening Adele’s Front Room will bring about eight jobs to the area, Carrol said, who also owns Mollie’s Public House in Riverside. The public house also is named after one of Carrol’s grandmothers, and it was opened on that grandma’s birthday as well. Opening a new business in La Grange came as an idea after Carrol and his wife spent a Sunday afternoon in the downtown area. “We were walking around and it was jam packed, and it seems like every other weekend something is going on,” he said. “[La Grange] has got that nice, family feel but on a bigger scale as far as restaurants go,” Carrol said. “We figured we made it here in Riverside, let’s see if we can make it in La Grange.”

ment speaking to former Gov. Rod Blagojevich, Topinka was known for her wry smile and humor. Delivered in her signature brash way, she could deliver a right hook of a joke. It was fitting at the memorial that the political elite in attendance, which included the likes of Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk, would not be spared a ribbing in the remarks of Miller and Conn. Conn especially brought many to tears during his remarks, though not of sadness, but of laughter. Riffing on Quinn’s comment, Conn called Topinka a
“truth screamer” and said she was a politician who could be counted on to tell it straight. Keeping the memorial filled with laughter and happy memories was longtime friend and chief of staff Nancy Kimme, who spoke of her admiration – and frustration – with Topinka’s straight talk. She added Topinka’s personality always filled the room. “Judy always liked to play to a full house,” Kimme said of the number of people in attendance. “So she would have been delighted today.” Others joked she would have wanted them to hold a fundraiser at the event.

Nine-year-old Lauren Sandusky of Riverside packs 125 shoeboxes with gifts that will be delivered to less-fortunate children around the world for the Christmas season. This is the fourth year the Riverside girl has undertaken the project.
By JOE SINOPOLI jsinopoli@shawmedia.com RIVERSIDE – Lauren Sandusky is 9 years old, and like any 9-year-old child, Christmas is taking up much of her mental energy these days. But Lauren isn’t thinking about the gifts she will find under her own tree Christmas morning – she’s making sure children of lesser means have something to unwrap for the holiday. Lauren, a student at Blythe Park School in Riverside, and her mother, Linda, started shopping at the first of the year for gifts that she has packed in shoeboxes donated by local shoe stores, which then were collected by the Samaritan’s Purse relief organization for Operation Christmas Child.

Besides buying the gifts, friends, neighbors, relatives and strangers also contribute to the stockpile of gift items. Under the program, the gift boxes then are shipped to lessfortunate children all over the world. Since 1993, 113 million boxes have been sent out by
the organization, according to the Sandusky family. This is the fourth year Lauren has participated in Operation Christmas Child. She has her own recipe for making up a box. Items include a stuffed animal, toothbrushes and toothpaste, T-shirts,
soap and washcloths, coloring books and crayons, and hard candy. “We usually put a little personal note from Lauren and her picture,” Linda Sandusky said. The Sandusky’s loaded the 125 boxes packed by Lauren
into the car and dropped them off to the Christian Life Center in Berwyn in December where they then were picked up by North Carolina-based Operation Christmas Child, which determines where across the globe the boxes eventually will be delivered. A bar code is attached so donors can track to which country the boxes are sent. The expense of the boxes is not limited to just the contents for the Sandusky family. Donors such as them are asked to donate $7 for each of the boxes to cover shipping costs. For the experience Lauren gets by the gesture, it’s worth it, Linda Sandusky said. “I think its teaching her to give back to the community,” she said.”Lauren’s a generous person by nature. But it’s made her realize that not everyone lives as affluently as we do.” For Lauren, it’s simple. “We do it because it’s fun and it makes us feel good,” she said.

Game breakdown
LA GRANGE – Jalen Clanton’s huge 3-pointer happened so fast the sophomore didn’t even have a chance to get nervous. Clanton received a nice pass from Daniko Jackson on a drive-and-kick and swished the 3 to give Riverside-Brookfield a three-point lead with 33 seconds left. That proved to be the game winner Saturday night at Lyons Township. The Bulldogs (9-0) remained undefeated with a 66-64 win against their neighbors. LT (82) lost for the first time since the season opener against Stevenson. “Daniko told me to go to the corner when he drives, he gave me a great pass and I knocked it down,” said Clanton, who also admitted this was R-B’s biggest win of the season so far. “It was just catch and shoot. It was a natural reaction. Catch it, put it up, shoot it as best as I can and pray it goes in.” Clanton scored 14 points and was one of three Bulldogs to score in double figures. Sam Johnson (18 points, 10 rebounds) and Mark Smith (16 points, 12 rebounds) both had double-doubles. Smith had 10 points in the first quarter and the Bulldogs led 19-11 after the quarter.

The Lions were just 10 for 22 from the free-throw line while the Bull-
“They’re good and we’re good and it came down to the buzzer,” LT coach Tom Sloan said. “They got a lot of easy baskets, lobs over the top, drives. The last basket they got, they got in the paint and the kickout was a great pass, but we got beat off the dribble to initiate that. “Hopefully we get the chance to play them again ... at York.” Both teams will play at York’s Jack Tosh Holiday Classic, which starts Friday.
