Police noticed a strong odor of alcohol on Ocampo’s breath. He admitted drinking and said he was on his way home from celebrating at a New Year’s Eve party in Chicago. The officer conducted field sobriety tests as well as a blood alcohol test, all of which Ocampo failed. Ocampo blew a .13 on the blood alcohol test, the release stated. Once in custody, Ocampo told the officer he believed he was traveling between 80 and 90 mph when stopped by police because he wanted to see how fast he could get his car to travel in the shortest distance possible. Police said Ocampo was extremely belligerent during booking and wanted to fight with police during his entire process at the police department. He also said he had stolen the car but the car was actually owned by a relative whom did not want to pursue charges even though the vehi-

cle had been taken without the owner’s consent. Ocampo was charged with speeding, driving under the influence, a second count of DUI for the blood-alcohol concentration, disobeying a traffic control light, no vehicle insurance and reckless driving. Both the speeding charge and the reckless driving charge are Class A misdemeanors due to the amount of excess speed over the posted speed limit. Riverside Police Chief Thomas Weitzel said in Thursday’s release Ocampo’s arrest is one of seven DUI arrests Riverside police had made so far during the New Year’s holiday as part of the federally and state-funded DUI enforcement initiative. Weitzel added If Ocampo had not been stopped, he probably would have crashed his vehicle and either killed himself or killed and harmed others who were traveling home from their jobs or other holiday parties.
As of Jan. 1, 2011, Illinois drivers with a heavy foot on the pedal face much stiffer penalties for excessive speeding. The new Illinois law targets drivers who speed more than 31 mph over the limit. According to Weitzel, what used to be a virtual slap on the wrist plus possible fines is now a potential jail sentence. Under the new law, a driver who speeds between 31 and 39 mph over the limit can be charged with a Class B Misdemeanor, punishable by up to 6 months in jail and a $1,500 fine. A driver who speeds 40 mph or more over the limit can face a Class A Misdemeanor, punishable by up to one year in jail and a $2,500 fine, the release said. Before the new law took effect, speeding more than 31 miles per hour was considered a moving violation, punishable by court supervision, possible driver safety classes and a fine.
Riverside man dies from fall at party in Chicago SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA RIVERSIDE – The 21-yearold woman who hosted a drinking party at her Chicago apartment from which an underage Riverside man died after falling three stories to his death has been charged in connection with the Dec. 23 incident, according to Chicago police. Raquel Rodriguez, of the 3500 block of North Wilton Avenue, was cited with 12 violations of the city of Chicago’s social hosting code, police said.
Danny McGovern, 20, of the 200 block of Gatesby Road, Riverside, died of multiple injuries after falling from a window, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Police found cans of beer, open liquor bottles and empty cups strewn throughout Rodriguez’s apartment as well as 12 under age drinkers who admitted to consuming alcohol, Chicago police said. Rodriguez, who was allegedly the supervising adult at the party, is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing Jan. 25.

Animal protection
Black bears, cougars and gray wolves are now protected species in Illinois. Although still rare, the wild animals in recent years have been spotted around the state, including a black bear seen last summer in a field between Marengo and Belvidere, near Interstate 90. The new designation allows conservation officials to better protect the animals, as they make appearances in Illinois.

MADE IN THE U.S.A.
On Monday, Cook County began a pilot program for a policy to allow audio and video records to be made in some county criminal courtrooms, according to a news release from the Illinois Supreme Court. The pilot program is already being implemented in 45 other counties in the state. The decision was announced Dec. 16, 2014, by Illinois Supreme Court Chief Justice Rita B. Garman and Cook County Circuit Court Chief Justice Timothy C. Evans. Effective Monday, recordings were allowed at the George N. Leighton Criminal Court Building at 26th Street and California Avenue in Chicago when in line with the Illinois Supreme Court Policy on Extended Media Coverage and a new Circuit Court rule promoted by Evans. With the announcement, Cook County became the 15th and largest circuit court to be approved for the program by the policy, which was first announced in January 2012. Under the policy, a request for cameras at a hearing or trial must be initiated by the news media through a media coordinator selected by the media. Still, the trial judge will be given absolute discretion on whether to allow camera coverage of a proceeding. The media will not be allowed to appeal the decision. The policy will not extend to coverage of the testimony of the victim in cases of sexual abuse or where sexual abuse is an essential element of the

After lawmakers raised the speed limit to 70 mph on downstate interstates in 2014, they decided to do the same in 2015 for Chicago-area interstates under the Illinois Tollway Authority’s control. However, it could be a while before 70 mph speed limit signs start popping up along Interstate 88, 294 or 355. The tollway authority still needs to conduct traffic studies to determine if a speed limit increase is warranted. Then it would require approval from the tollway’s board of directors, the Illinois Department of Transportation and the Joint Commission on Administrative Rules before taking effect. Another bill now prohibits police from taking a person’s driver’s license as bond after pulling them over for minor traffic violations such as speeding.

Drivers on tollways in the western suburbs could reach their destination a little faster in 2015. And, for the first time, if a boater along the Cal-Sag Channel or Fox River operates under the influence, the boat can be impounded. Likewise, if underage kids are caught drinking inside cars, motor homes, campers and private planes, their parents now can be charged with a crime. As Illinois residents begin a new year, they face 220 new laws that took effect Jan. 1, approved by lawmakers and Gov. Pat Quinn. The highlights cover various issues, from transportation to wild animals.

Tips to stay healthy during this flu season Each year, up to 20 percent of the U.S. population gets hit with some form of the flu. That means one in five people – or more than 63 million people nationwide – are in danger of missing work or school and being out of commission for days at a time. The flu affects everyone. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, almost 60 percent of COMMUNITY flu-related hospitalizations in VOICE the 2013-2014 flu season were Dr. William adults between ages 18 and Moran 64. Last winter was particularly harsh in more ways than just the weather – hospitalization rates for people between 50 and 64 years old were higher than those seen during the 2009 outbreak and any year since. There is plenty you can do to avoid the flu. Here are a few quick and easy tips to keep yourself and your family healthy this season: Consider a flu shot: A flu vaccine reduces the risk of developing significant symptoms by as much as 60 percent. The viruses change a little from year to year, which can affect how well the shot works in any given season. One flu shot per year does the trick for almost everyone, and it is a safe and effective way to prevent the flu and reduce the risk of associated complications. The earlier you get a shot, the better. It takes two weeks for the flu shot to start working, so consider a vaccine early in the season. Take care of yourself: Mom always said to feed a cold and starve a fever, right? Not so. Studies show no matter the ailment, it’s always important to stay full and hydrated to ensure a quick, complete recovery. Other ways to avoid getting yourself or others sick are thorough and frequent hand washing, covering your mouth when coughing, avoiding contaminated surfaces and getting plenty of sleep. Know the symptoms: Flu symptoms include a fever, cough, congestion, chills, fatigue, body aches, sore throat and headache. Cold symptoms, while similar, are fewer in number, milder and last only a few days. The flu typically lasts seven to 10 days for children and five to seven days for adults. Some symptoms, such as fatigue, may last several weeks. If you suffer from labored breathing or dehydration as a result of the flu, you should go to the hospital. Know if you are at risk: While the flu can strike anyone, some people are at a higher risk. This includes the elderly, children younger than 2 and individuals with medical conditions such as asthma, heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes and kidney and liver disease. Individuals with compromised immune systems also are at especially high risk.

If you thought the comparatively mild weather this winter through Christmas and New Year’s meant we were going to get off lightly this year, then you were sadly mistaken. It’s still not quite as bad as the polar vortex conditions we saw last winter, but this week’s snow and single-digit temperatures are a reminder that in this part of the world, a harsh winter is inevitable. Maybe next week will be nicer? It’s not usually news when an animal dies, but it’s a little bit different when it’s a newborn dolphin calf at the Brookfield Zoo. The 7-day-old calf died Dec. 19, 2014, despite zoo staff’s efforts to treat it after it began showing signs of distress. The zoo is the jewel of the community, so that means we all lost something with the calf’s death. The silver lining is that two calves born in 2013, Merlin and Magic, are thriving as part of the zoo’s exhibit. David Good, managing editor dgood@shawmedia.com 630-427-6270

Property taxes down, water and rubbish rates up It is great that Elmhurst is lowering our property taxes a little this year, but they are raising our water and rubbish rates. Talk about giving with one hand and taking away with the other!
Downers Grove should consider village complex
There has been a lot of talk about spending $52 million dollars on a new village complex to include the village hall, police department and fleet maintenance. If residents do not feel it is appropriate to spend this amount of money, why doesn’t Downers Grove consider using an existing building that would only need interior work? Using an existing building should cut down dramatically on the final cost. There is an unoccupied
Dominick’s store on 63rd Street, which should have ample space to meet the needs of Downers Grove. There is also ample parking. If that amount of parking is not needed, then perhaps a fleet building could be built in the parking lot area. Downers Grove could sell the existing village hall and use the proceeds toward the new facility. Sometimes thinking outside the box is the best option.
Elmhurst Alderman Gukenkauf will be missed
I will miss Ms. Diane Gukenkauf as our Elmhurst alderwoman. Diane always questioned expenses and some strange actions by past mayors and officials. She ‌ is a smart person and leader! We will miss her thoughtful advice and counsel in the future.
Students shouldn’t provide election input
I [wanted to Sound Off] regarding the Hadley project regarding low election turnouts. I was just thinking the students, who are still children, should stick to reading, writing and arithmetic, and leave that other kind of thing to the adults.

Although private four-year colleges are noting their very minimal tuition hikes this year, they have a history of disregarding the inflation rate in many years by large percents. Yet, students are burdened with loans that will last a lifetime, and at the same time, find it hard to find decent-paying jobs. Why not “get even by spending the first two years at a high quality community college like the College of DuPage? Then, transfer as a junior, which becomes quite easy for most four-year colleges. You’ll end up with as good an education, less student loans and probably save at least $50,000 to $200,000 in the process.

This is in regards to New Year’s [Eve and Day] celebrations. I would like to address all these people who feel the need to bring their neighbors into their celebrations by letting off fireworks at midnight. It’s very disturbing. It’s very unnecessary. And if you want to celebrate, celebrate on your own. But don’t involve all your neighbors.

“We’ve had a great run, and sometimes losing it gives you a sense to keep working and keep going at it.” Tom McCloskey Riverside Brookfield coach points and had three rebounds. Johnson is the only senior starter on the Bulldogs and has been the team’s most consistent player this season. He was among the tournament leaders in points per game (15), rebounds per game (10.2) and 3-point percentage (55.6). “I think I’m just more aggressive and more comfortable in the flow of the game,” Johnson said. McCloskey has noticed the improvement of Johnson, who started last year, but has taken his game to another level. “He was very good, but nothing like this,” McCloskey said. “He’s just a beast. He goes and gets the ball. He can shoot, he hustles, he rebounds, he’s a great leader and he’s having a great senior year.” The Bulldogs played St. Edward in a Metro Suburban West game Tuesday to kick Erica Benson - ebenson@shawmedia.com off 2015 action. ELMHURST – Riverside Brookfield received a bit of a wake-up call in the final of York’s Jack Tosh Holiday Tournament. The Bulldogs entered the tournament championship game against Lake Forest with an undefeated record but lost 69-42 to the also undefeated Scouts, who defended their title from last year. Lake Forest senior forward Evan Boudreaux, a Dartmouth recruit, was named tournament MVP after putting up 29 points and 14 rebounds. Boudreaux set tournament records for total points (145) and rebounds (69) in five games. RB came back from an early 8-1 deficit to take a 13-10 lead on a Henry Trelenberg 3-pointer. Noah Karras made 3s on three straight possessions to give the Scouts a 19-13 lead, and they led the rest of the game. “I think Lake Forest is a really good team,” coach Tom McCloskey said. “I think their size and strength gave us a whole lot of trouble. It was hard to get shots off. They contested everything really well. “We’ve had a great run, and sometimes losing it gives you a sense to keep working and keep going at it. We just got to work at it and have good things happen down the road.” Karras scored 23 points on 5-for-7 shooting from 3-point range. The Scouts took a 34-22 lead into halftime, and RB was unable to get within single digits in the second half. “It’s a learning experience, that’s a very good team,” said junior guard Daniko Jackson, who led the Bulldogs with 12 points. “It will help us in the future.” Jackson was joined on the all-tournament team by Sam Johnson. Johnson was in foul trouble throughout the final and fouled out with 4:53 left. Johnson, who is averaging a double-double, scored five

LEGAL NOTICE / PUBLIC NOTICE Public Hearing Notice Notice is given that the Zoning Board of Appeals of the Village of Western Springs, Cook County, Illinois, will hold a public hearing at the hour of 7:00 p.m., or as soon thereafter as the matter may be heard, on January 29, 2015, in the Board Room at the Village Hall, 740 Hillgrove Avenue, Western Springs, Illinois, relative to a request for a variation from the corner side yard setback regulations found at Section 10-6-3(2) (Minimum Yard Requirements; Corner Side Yard) of the Western Springs Development Control Ordinance, for the following described property: Legal Description: Lot 12 in Block 9 in Caldwell's Subdivision of C.C. Lay's Addition to Western Springs, a Subdivision of the East Part of the Northwest Quarter of Section 6, Township 38 North, Range 12 East of the Third Principal Meridian, in Cook County, Illinois. Common Address: 4087 Rose Avenue, Western Springs, Illinois. P.I.N.: 18-06-122-012 Zoning District: R-2 Single Family Zoning District Petitioners: Scott and Melissa Yanzy ("Property Owners" or collectively the "Petitioner") The purpose of the variation is to allow for a reduced corner side yard setback for the south side of the residence adjacent to the Maple Street right-of-way. The current zoning regulations require a corner side yard setback of fifteen (15') feet along the south side of the property. The Petitioners are requesting permission to build a new residence on the property that will encroach into the corner side yard setback area a maximum of four and one-half feet (4'6"). The front portion of the new residence does not require a variation from the corner side yard setback requirement, but approximately one-half of the length of the new home (22') does require a variation from the required setback. Petitioner's application and supporting documents have been on file with the Village Clerk since November 24, 2014. The supporting documents are available for examination through the Office of the Village Clerk (or Community Development Department) in the Village Hall, 740 Hillgrove Avenue, Western Springs, Illinois 60558. This Notice is given pursuant to state law and the applicable provisions of the Village of Western Springs Municipal Code and its Development Control Ordinance. All persons wishing to be heard may appear and be heard at the public hearing or may submit written comments with respect to any issues regarding the requested zoning relief. This Notice is given pursuant to 65 ILCS 5/11-13-1 et seq. and the Open Meetings Act. The public hearing may be continued by the Board of Zoning Appeals without further notice other than a motion to be entered upon the minutes of the hearing, fixing the time and place of any subsequent public hearings, if necessary, or except as otherwise required by the Illinois Open Meetings Act. If you have any physical or mental conditions that would be considered a disability under the American's with Disabilities Act, the Village will make and take all reasonable measures to assist you in participating in the public hearing process. If you need translators or other assistance to make the process meaningful for you, please also notify us. It is our goal to provide these reasonable accommodations to those with disabilities so that they may meaningfully participate in the public hearing process. Persons requiring auxiliary aids and services should contact Mr. Martin Scott at the Village Hall, 740 Hillgrove Avenue, Western Springs, Illinois 60558 or call Mr. Scott at 708-246-1800 five (5) days prior to the above hearing date to inform us of your anticipated attendance.
